Anyway it's been three years since the book came out and if you dont like the way its written that's no problem but it's always bothered me that people wrote off the book because of the "romance" and the fact that it's from Snow's perspective and "oh no he's hot" but if you read past the fucking tropes maybe you'd understand that we're not meant to like him. He's a despicable human being in a despicable society and he's written as such and I hope the movie does that justice.

my instinct says venomous purely because that opens up the fun possibility of magical side effects whenever yakumo bites someone (i want his venom to have a mild numbing property so he can bite me and i can finally get a decent night's sleep)

Snakes

I'm not a reptile person. I've never owned one, and I'm not especially interested in them, but I do respect them as beautiful and unique animals. And as a rat owner, I've shared a lot of community spaces with herps over the years, because a great deal of rat people get there by way of snakes -- sometimes feeder breeders become rat fanciers, after all.

Anyway, one time I was chatting on a forum with a snake owner and they said something that has really stuck with me. We were talking about the similarities and differences of our various pet interests, and I asked them about their snake hobby.

And they said: "I think there's real value in learning how to take care of something that will never love you back."

And I thought that was really profound.

I've shared this wisdom multiple times and gotten lackluster or skeptical responses to it. It makes people uncomfortable. And, frankly, I think a lot of people think of love only in terms of romantic relationships or friendships and they can only see this as toxic advice.

But I think it bears sitting with and considering, because there absolutely are times when you have to care deeply and selflessly for something.

Raising kids, for example. You have to love them and do the best for them even when they're ungrateful little shits.

Care-taking for someone who's disabled, for example. You have to take care of them even when they're not a model patient. Depending on their level of illness or disability, they may not even be able to acknowledge your efforts. (For example, an elderly person with Alzheimer's who doesn't recognize you anymore)

Taking care of the environment. Conservation efforts. Trees and wildlife and fish and the ocean do not and will not ever give a shit about you, but you have to do right by them.

I'm not saying that kids and disabled folks etc. aren't capable of love, obviously. Hell, I won't even go so far as to say snakes can't feel affection. That's not my wheelhouse.

What I'm saying is that, if you are only capable of being thoughtful, caring, or responsible when it feels good -- when you get the instant gratification of a heartwarming reaction -- you're missing out on a bigger opportunity to make a big difference in the world.

This whole human experiment only works if people are willing to step up sometimes and give a shit about something outside of themselves. And the sooner you're able to find value and meaning in that action, the richer your life will be.
