Today is the day! I may have gone a little overboard with my art for this year's @theterrorbigbang, but @edward-little wrote such a fantastic 1920's Agatha Christie-styled murder mystery that I could not help myself.

VAINGLORY

His chest ached, and he lifted one hand to rub at the mark through his greatcoat as he rounded the corner, only for that same hand to instinctively reach out and close around a clothed bicep as he ran headlong into Thomas Jopson, who blinked startled, achingly blue eyes at Edward as the two of them nearly toppled headlong into the bulkhead.

His soulmark stared back at him from the mirror, the mix of bluebells, asphodels, azaleas, and cornflowers—unique to him and his soulmate, as all soulmarks were, swirled together in a delicate collage of blues, pinks, and whites.

“It is a good idea, sir, even if it will deplete the supplies,” Edward murmured, and watched as Fitzjames preened under the unexpected praise, a sunflower finally seeing light and direction for the first time in months. He wondered if that was the mark Fitzjames hid beneath his clothes

But there it was, a flash of red against the desolate ground, and Edward stood, dumbstruck, before he slowly began to step forward, fingers curled into fists at his side. It was impossible, but perhaps it was a leftover from the strange people who lived here, who had given John that meat all those impossible months ago. Perhaps—

Faith.  Humility.  Temperance.  Hope in love.  Hope, faith, those creatures that saw him to the end and that he had shunned at first as impossible—and the devotion that would have seen Edward follow Tam to the grave father than leave him behind.  Now—now.  Now they had time.  They would return to England, and Edward would get his affairs in other.  There would be an inquest, he knew, but all of that he could deal with.  So long as Tam was with him, he could meet anything that would come.

My first loyalty is to you now, Edward thought, adjusting them so they could lay down properly and sleep.  His wretched heart had led him true.  Keep here your watch, and never part.

With all the faith in his heart, he knew they never would.

Did you know that "Alternate Universe - Formula One" is a canonical tag on AO3? To the tune of about 400 works? About a quarter of them are AUs of the recent F1 grid, but apparently an awful lot of fandoms have at least one person who wakes up one day and decides to put their blorbos into race cars.

For this year's @theterrorbigbang, I decided that I was going to be that guy for The Terror.

I have had the great good fortune to once again have @awhbeans as my collaborator, and she has done an absolutely amazing job—I don't know how she manages to pull these images out of my head and make them a reality in her illustrations, but she absolutely did and it's beautiful. Here's a tiny teaser. For the whole amazing thing(s), you gotta go look.

Anyway, it was fun to merge my two chief hyperfixations: a TV show about the destructive hubris of empire and compassion and brotherhood in the face of certain death on one hand; on the other, handsome men driving very fast cars. I've spent a lot of the last few months reading loads of F1 nonfiction, plus watching a lot of old race footage (because of course the only way I was going to write a modern AU was to pick a setting that requires at least as much research as canonical historical fiction) and hopefully it's all paid off.

Day 3 of @inukag-week 2023: Safe

Clutching at the red fabric and taking a big inhale, Kagome felt the tight tangle of anxiety come undone. She was fine now. Everything was going to be okay.

Inuyasha was here.

She didn’t know when it first began, because it happened so quickly and so naturally. She hadn’t thought about it the first time she jumped to the shelter of his arms—couldn’t remember when it became her instinct. Perhaps it began even on the first day they ever met.

When Kagome found herself in Sengoku that fateful day, lost beyond worlds, she’d run to Goshinboku to find her home, and there he’d been (her real home, though she’d never have guessed it back then). Sure enough, he saved her from the Mistress Centipede. Despite their rocky start, time and time again he’d prove his capabilities. Learning to depend on Inuyasha’s strength came fast by necessity. If she were in trouble, she believed that Inuyasha could and ultimately would deal with it—if only to ensure his Jewel Shard detector could fulfill her duties (at first).

Then they became friends, and she knew in her heart the way that he’d call for her, “Kagome!” had to mean he cared beyond her usefulness. Not because he had to save her, but because he wanted her to live.

She trusted him to defend her, to protect her, to find her—time and space and rules of the universe be damned.

She believed in Inuyasha. She put her whole heart into her faith in him.

And now, in her newest moment of terror, he was here.

“Kagome, would you quit being a baby already?” her husband admonished.

She was too horrified to be offended, and instead shouted, “No!” before smushing herself further into his arms. Okay, so maybe she was being melodramatic, but she couldn’t help it.

Inuyasha sighed over her antics. It was her weak spot after all.

Maggots. In their home.

Kagome hated bugs. She turned into such a sissy over them despite having faced far worse in her life.

With her body essentially glued onto him, Inuyasha warned, “I have to get closer to them to get rid of them, you know.”

She squealed, “No! Just use Tessaiga! You took out a wall in our house’s kitchen over a cockroach. Remember? I’m sorry I got mad before, just do the same thing now!”

He winced at the memory. It’d been years ago, but he still recalled the way she had screeched so loud that he had overreacted at the time. It’d been a lot of damage after all. He’d like to think he had a little more sense than he did back then.

“I’m not rebuilding our home because of some bugs.” Gross as the rotten heap of fruit was. The smell bothered him most, but even Inuyasha had to admit that the wriggling creatures were disturbing.

“Please, please, please just get rid of them,” she sobbed pathetically, this time burying her face into his chest and practically clawing up his torso to get off the ground. He doubted there were any near them, though she acted as if there was a huge infestation threatening to crawl up her legs any second.

Blowing his bangs up, Inuyasha relented to his wife and unsheathed his sword, which automatically transformed to its full size. Thankfully their home could accommodate it, but the contrast of the weapon compared to the compact pile of mush was comical.

Now, how to deal with this?

Not used to making such minuscule movements, Inuyasha did his best to scoop the mushy peaches onto the end of his sword. It wasn’t the worst idea. After all, he wasn’t keen on getting closer to the rancid smell. Unfortunately the resulting squelching sound made his wife let out a string of, “Ew, ew, ew!” before letting out a short scream.

His ear twitched. “You’re okay.”

She shook her head, gripping at him.

It didn’t seem like she was going to let go of him any time soon, and while he was used to carrying her around, the tight space and task made it cumbersome. But maybe he enjoyed, just a little, how close she was. He could do without her having a meltdown though.

“Okay, let’s go.” He held her to him with one arm, doing his best to navigate their way out the door along with the sword. Once out the door he carefully flung the offending pile of nastiness as far away as he could.

“Are they gone?” Kagome asked. She didn’t dare to pull away just yet.

He gave Tessaiga a good thwack to rid it of any remaining peach liquid. Then he sheathed it. “Most of ‘em. I’ll go back inside to take a look. You oughta get off me unless you wanna deal with them.”

A muffled sigh came from his chest. Kagome peeled herself off him sheepishly.

“Okay…” she replied as she stepped away.

“You wait out here.”

She nodded, and he disappeared behind the screen door only to emerge two minutes later. He chucked something once more as far away as possible, wiped his hands on his pants, and turned to her.

Kagome shoved herself back in his arms, this time hugging him with relief. “You got them all?”

“Uh-huh.”

“You checked near the sleeping mats?”

“Mhmm. You’re safe now.” His affirmations were tinged with affectionate mockery.

She didn’t care. “Thank you,” she mumbled as she clung to him. “You’re my hero.” Quickly (because they were outside) she kissed his lips to show her gratitude.

He stroked her back comfortingly. “Damn right.”

Frenchie falls hard and fast. It takes Izzy a little while longer to catch up. This is the slow courtship of Izzy Hands, using flowers.

This fic was written for OFMD Aro/Ace Week 2024.

[Personal notes: OMG-It's so *GOOD*. This has a bit of S2, but mostly takes place post S2, if that tempts you, READ IT. This got me back into the hobby Frenchie does in the fic and AHHH]

you steal my breath away: By ChangeTheCircumstances [Rated: Mature. Complete]

Something is clearly off about Izzy, but when Frenchie sees him petting a cat, it finally clicks. Izzy is a fucking witch! In order to protect the crew, Frenchie makes the next obvious step in logic: he has to kill him.

[Personal notes: I feel this one is just 'if you like Frenchie/Izzy, you've READ THIS- but it's so earnest! SOLID fic the 'realizations' on both ends are really amazing and well written, reread it if you have]

Of Roach, the scientist - although, that those ghoulish practices he carries out should be called science is a subject on which some might disagree - I feel like I should speak with extreme terror. In laying down those events which transpired during that winter in the turning over of our century, it seems as though on paper they create an impression of little more than a tawdry tale, a freak show in writing for the morbidly curious. It’s no question that I spent a great deal of that time afraid for my life, and for my soul. And yet, I tell you - I have never felt quite so alive as I did during the days I have spent living in the graveyard.

I wonder what this might say about me. What a pair we make.

[ANOTHER bongbingbong Roach/Izzy fic!!! I love the way bongbingbong writes Roach/Izzy. It's not finished, but I am SO excited to see how it goes! In this one, even though it's unfinished, I feel it GETS the pre-Bonnet life Izzy lived on the Queen Anne. If you like probably autistic Izzy, READ THIS! That, and Roach and Izzy's relationship is SO GOOD. I won't spoil it, but the mutual trust is really strong!]

Izzy Hands, a 90s heartthrob turned casting director with an impressively average back catalogue, never foresaw his career trajectory bringing him back to television. He certainly never would've guessed that his big return would be on Strictly Come Dancing. At least it breaks the monotony, even if he's paired with the insufferable twat, the Gentleman of the Ballroom.

It's the kind of fast-paced environment that Izzy was sure he'd long-since grown out of, and he's sure he's not going to make it past the first few weeks. Still, the more he finds himself enjoying it, the more he hopes he'll stay, and he finds himself more in love with life than he's been in years.

Still, the talk of the curse puts Izzy on edge. Bonnet is strangely captivating and seems more interested in Izzy than Edward has in years. Izzy may not believe in them, but that's the thing about curses: once they take hold...

[OMG. OMFG?!?!? Do you know how much I love 'Dancing with the Stars' AU? NO? Well. For every fandom I enter, my first tags I search are 'time loop' 'time travel' and 'dancing'. This fic is EVERYTHING I love about the trope. I have been following this fic from Day 1 and OMG. I love it. Can't recommend it enough]

Summary:

Maggie Sawyer jumped from her chair with a clatter. Before Alex could call her lightsaber to her hand, Maggie's lips were on hers. Every muscle in Alex's body went slack all at once as Maggie pushed her into the wall with two hands fisted into her cloak.

"Mmph!" she grunted, unable to speak past Maggie's insistent lips.

"Play along, or we're both dead," Maggie hissed in her ear.

Alex didn't know why she accepted the premise presented to her. She did.

At least, she did until Maggie put both hands flat against Alex's shoulders and shoved her back into the wall. Alex's head connected with a heavy thunk that clacked her teeth together and reverberated in her skull. Her lips buzzed with the suddenly missing contact.

The woman, who'd been all over her a moment ago, now stared at her with near hatred.

"Stay out of the things that don't concern you, Jedi," Maggie Sawyer spat.

What? "But you—" But she…. "What?"

We hope so! Though we have not convened to discuss things yet. Life has been very busy for all of us, which is why the closing/feedback survey for the 2023 event hasn't gone out yet.
