(i got into it like around 2015 and i typically go for 3rd gen to earlier when it comes to music, also i don’t interact with any fandoms on social media anymore since i’ve gotten older (and i don’t rlly keep up with the idols themselves) beyond what edits i see or what gets so popular i have to see it on my fyp)

red velvet (my girlies)

loona (haseul could’ve been the baekhyun of loona if they used her properly beyond 1 line)

exo (masterclass in discography and actually being a capital i idol but also mess and mismanagement, arguably a big part of some of their issues is the tension between sk and china, etc.)

vixx (still a fair bit underrated imo when you consider how long they’ve been active, their vocal ability, being known for their concepts, like ughhhhh leo is one of the only idols who i will be like ‘that’s my husband and we have 6 kids <3’ about)

monsta x (very solid discography, talented, rappers that genuinely have something which there a lot of rappers in kpop groups just bc they’re trying to get appeal, still mildly irritated over the wonho thing bc the way companies deal with stuff like that when the idol is innocent is just so annoying. queen is one of the best bsides in kpop history.)

unfortunately jay park is cute and i do like mommae, dean’s like one album he did (i didn’t listen to the other one if that even was a full second album), i used to fw hyuna but she’s pissed me the fuck off

fave time out jail ig: bts (just really grew out of being into them ig since boy with luv came out, some of their tiktok fanbase proudly bullying people and how i feel about the quality of their music now (missing house of cards type quality) + the western validation debate + being on tumblr when people made jungkook’s whole personality at 19 yrs old being goo goo ga ga over banana milk and having a noona kink)), nct (the t*eil thing, but imo if people like that want to hide then they will so i think at least some of the members didn’t know, i don’t keep up with that so i’m not sure if any other info has since come out. i believe he did it with how things are rn and as a csa survivor i just feel a bit gross with being overly supportive of them)

and then there is the can of worms that is the group named after colors (another case where imo they were better earlier on, playing with fire >>>>)

i don’t really have any 4th gen faves, i love ateez and i like some stray title tracks (as in random not stray kids lmao) & bsides from groups here and there

i have mixed feelings about 4-5th gen (imo music is not the focus so much as international reach and social media presence), riize (wonbin is so fine though like sm employs pretty boy idols and refuses to manage them properly) and new jeans (i really wished i liked their music because literally everyone else does), ive’s title tracks are pretty solid (i don’t know anything about their bsides), le sserafim is ehhhhhhhh (i think i literally only like anti fragile + they do need to improve technically for me), enhyphen (i will say is the closet to being a fave for me because i eat up their obsessive songs that are apparently about their webtoon???????? and that one jyp cover (i assume bc he was there) bangs, also again they’re fine 😖)

for the life of me i can’t fully commit to aespa but their concept is cool (and the lore should stick to them and not be attached to every sm group imo)

talking about the songs i like & listen to regularly/industry opinions is a different discussion (that i dipped into too much here) i fear so i’ll shut up!!! i could probably get back into it if a company debuted a group and was like ‘안녕하세요! we are D.I.L.F!’ and the members are all at least in their mid 40’s and they groan when they try to bow

So I’m uh…very late to the party with these bc I was really trying to sit out whatever bug is going on for me but I saw this the day it came out and was like WHAT????

I did NOT expect the previews to be released so early,but tbh I’m not complaining I was wondering when they were coming out :0c anyways,these were my initial impressions hearing the one in this video and the SIF 2 previews ⬇️⬇️

Ayumu - “Walking Dream” : Not gonna lie,this is not the song I expected to hear from this detective outfit but it’s really good - I like the bells and light waltz-y feel of the instrumentals,it’s not my FAVORITE Ayumu solo but it’s still nice plus it’s just the preview so idk I might change my mind when the full comes out

Kasumi - “Senobi Shittate” : You know what? This is a totally different sound for Kasumin,but I like it quite a bit - Not really my style personally,but the instrumental is really pretty and it shows a more mature Kasumi which is nice (and yes,I’m semi counting this as her black swan era too because of the instrumentals alone)

Shizuku - “Koakuma LOVE ♡” : My immediate thoughts are…HUH???? Like,I had a feeling that her solo may be cutesier due to her outfit choices but like…not like this and I love it so much,it may be one of my favorites so far :0c (but then again,imo Shizuku’s solos are always at least decent so it’s not that big of a surprise ig dndjdj - also everyone saying she swapped song styles with Kasumi is RIGHT omg)

Karin - “My Shadow” : If you look up “Karin Asaka” and put “having a bad song” next to it,you will find NOTHING because FINALLY!!!! KARIN GOT HER JAZZ SOLO!!!!! …ok it’s not exactly jazz more like electro swing but you know what? I will take it,this song is SO good - this one might be up there when it comes to my favorites too bc wow,I hope they keep doing this sort of song in LL

Ai - “Request for U” : Ok,so I was right about Ai getting a more mellow song than usual and honestly?? It works really well for her,it’s still somewhat upbeat and very Ai-y but like Kasumi’s,it shows a different side to her that I like a lot :] it’s rlly cute

Kanata - “Cooking with Love” : WOWOWOW my mind is blown with this one…this might be my favorite out of the album so far and my favorite Kanata solo like it sounds like a magical girl anime ending and I am so about it,we knew with that jirai kei outfit that she was gonna cook and cook she DID,this girl made a whole sweets buffet and I will eat every bite

Setsuna - “Cherry Bomb” : So the words on her merch WERE the title of her song,and boy is this song good too like…these songs were worth the wait - Hayamaru’s voice is fantastic,it’s distinctly different but still very Setsuna sounding,I love the sort of harder rock sound in this song :0c I’m one of the few that’s very 50/50 on Setsuna’s solos but this one is really good,they really cranked up the shounen anime opening vibes for her and I like it a lot

Emma - “Koisuru Sunflower” : This album continues to be full of surprises,I was expecting a slower song due to the outfit but am pleasantly surprised with this mid-tempo calypso-y song - Emma’s songs always have this sort of warm comfy sound,I feel like I’m relaxing on the beach with a fun drink listening to it idk what it is

Rina - “Watashi wa Magnet” : …huh this song is a lot slower than I expected it to be with the outfit,but I think it’s funny that Rina has gotten two love songs consistently although this one is more upbeat and bubbly compared to the more bittersweet somber sound of First Love Again,but it’s not really my style like it’s not terrible it’s just not a song I think I’ll listen to often ykwim

Shioriko - “Koufukuron” : Ok…this is absolutely not how I expected this to sound,like her outfit names were things like “Undead Celebrity” and “Royal Skeleton” - I fully expected this song to be kind of spooky sounding but no…ily Shio but this preview does NOT do the song justice,it just seems so flat in comparison to her other songs I’m kinda disappointed :/

Mia - “Lemonade” : The song is very cute,it gives me very 2009 Hannah Montana but like a good b-side - There’s other Mia solos I like more,but this one is alright and also some of the lyrics are a little…silly but it’s easier to brush past this time (looking at you Toy Doll)

Lanzhu - “5201314 / I Love You for A Lifetime” : And the most unique song title in Love Live goes to…Zhong Lanzhu! But seriously,Lanzhu really does not miss,this song is so good :0c I like that she speaks a little more Mandarin in this song,and even the general vibe of the song reflects that too. It still has her sound,but has elements to it that are new - She truly never makes a bad song

can u explain hozier's "eat ur young" to me?

i can try!! (This ended up way longer than i meant it to lmao so i’m adding a cut. My thoughts are also very jumbled bc there’s just so many layers of meaning it was hard to touch on it all in a way that makes sense… i also am sure i dont have a full understanding of all the nuance of it and all the historical context and stuff)

i cant find the tiktok to save my life but someone talked about how it seems to be inspired by this piece of satirical writing that came from ireland during the famine called “a modest proposal”:

it’s a very political song for sure!! the lines “pull up the ladder when the flood comes” and “throw enough rope until the legs have swung” seems to be about selfishly not saving people during times of need (taking away the ladder that would let them escape the flood, throwing rope not until they’re saved but until they’re left hanging) and the lines “skinning the children for a war-drum, putting food on the table selling bombs and guns, it’s quicker and easier to eat your young” are pretty self explanatory examples of the criticism towards the wealthy/the government that i think he’s going for. and kind of calling bullshit on their exploitative, harmful “solutions” to the problems that exist in society, solutions that only benefit them, like in the line “honey i’m making sure the table’s made // we can celebrate the good that we’ve done”— sitting down to literally eat the youth but viewing it as a celebration dinner

now hozier’s ALSO said the whole album is heavily based off of dante’s inferno, and he said that this song is the one about gluttony, so that’s another layer to it! lines like “i wanna wrap my teeth around the world” and “i want to race you to the table” and of course these lines and the gluttony theme still work with the political statements because the gluttony and selfishness of the rich/gov’t is what drives them to carry out these awful “solutions”

also also a lot of the lines have double meanings that can sound very sexual and make it seem like an erotic/sensual song (specifically about cunnilingus it seems??) and there’s some debate about whether he intended it to truly have a double meaning or whether its supposed to be a bait and switch where it sounds like a sexy song but rlly its political and meaningful ((like how cherry wine is a bait and switch in that it sounds like a love song but is actually about domestic abuse— it’s not meant to be interpreted as both really). For this song i tend to lean towards the former, hozier really likes to blend together sexual meanings and political meanings and i think it’s fine to appreciate it for how sexy it can sound as long as the political aspect is also acknowledged 😁

Hello! Thoughts on all the ELO albums you’ve heard?

ooooooohhhhhhhhh this will be fun. i’m probably going to be relatively succinct so as not to ramble but nonetheless:

no answer: it’s not for everyone but it’s still appealing. sometimes songs from this one get played on the deep tracks channel on sirius xm and they freak my mom out. also roy is cool so there’s that

elo ii: i loooooooove this album. again it’s not for everyone but it is definitely for me >:^) it’s nice to listen to on a rainy spring day. noticeably different and primitive-sounding compared to the later ones, but still so good

on the third day: one of my favorites for sure!!! i feel like you can definitely see the shift towards the zesty ELO sound on this one, but it’s still a tiny bit proggy. also the usa album cover is simply beautiful so that helps

eldorado: my life is dedicated to this album tbh. it’s literally perfect and contains actual magic. i listen to it most in the fall (while walking around and looking at the trees if possible lmao) but it’s welcome any time. i also think it has some of the best lyrics of all ELO albums

face the music: more fall vibes but in a different sort of way. i’m not sure why i don’t include this one on my favorites list more often bc it definitely deserves to be there?? i also rlly like the deluxe edition or whatever that has the longer version of evil woman. delicious

a new world record: exquisite; seemingly universally-liked, and it deserves to be. i feel like tightrope is also one of the best opening tracks bc it’s just so exciting to listen to and i love the beginning :’)

out of the blue: the other album my life is dedicated to along with eldorado. it was the first full ELO album i listened to, and hearing it for the first time is one of my favorite memories because i was home alone for the night, had recently purchased a whole entire box of records and planned to listen to a bunch of them that night, buuuuut i liked out of the blue so much that every time it ended i just kept starting it over and that was all i listened to all day. so. i like it

discovery: not on my favorites list BUT i like it! it’s zesty and fun

xanadu: does this count? i feel that it’s somewhat underrated although i have never listened to the non-ELO side skdlsflslfzdj

time: 10000/10 i love it. another entry on my favorites list. definitely a change of pace from the ones that came before it, but i love the whole vibe both in terms of sound and theme. i also think the album cover is really pretty lmao

secret messages: i like this album and the overall sound of it BUT to be blunt, other people act soooooooo obnoxious about it sometimes and it’s often hard to overcome that kind of association skdkdjskfk

balance of power: very good and very underrated, but very underwhelming album cover. that’s not a major priority or anything, but nonetheless

zoom: most of my thoughts about this album are actually more relevant to my thoughts on that whole entire era which is something i could probably write a very long essay about, BUT i won’t. in general tho i like it!

alone in the universe: i have such good memories of the time when this was released and it met my high expectations :^)

from out of nowhere: kind of the same as my thoughts re: AITU, but i actually think it’s probably my favorite of the two!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OKAY OKAY I LIKE THIS ONE AND HOPE NO ONE HATES ME FOR MY ORDER BUT

1. revenge (obviously i mean look at me i am drenched in black and red at all times and gerards hair was just so nice) specific parts include flour face gerard and that photoshoot with the blood covering his hand in a building with brick walls and arches it looked like a church basement and the vampire one for kerrang where its a girls back and theyre covered in blood and hes biting her neck hehe, reasoning for it being my favorite is it has only one song i skip (ghost of you) and every other has a lot more that i usually do and just how theatric and dramatic but also edgy everything was, tbp is more theatric BUT theres more Hope vibes and this is that but with despair and blood and guns and coffins and that just appeals to me fundamentally way more especially when im in my bag. it probably has my most favorite songs too, like to the end cemetery drive jetset life and HANG EM HIGH OR MOTHERFUCKING DIE. maybe my favorite mcr song but im not thinking too hard when i say that

2. bullets, its just so suburban i feel like I'm back in Jersey its October and im walking past cul de sacs and the sunset is bright fucking orange its fantastic its art in every sense and its full of sorrow bc its the closest album chronologically to 9/11 and gerard had the least sureness in the future but he was so confident and it just bleeds into everything so hard, my favorite moments in life are majorly moments similar to what i described. wearing a hoodie and jeans and converse and observing the way the streetlights color the concrete and asphalt, especially if theres been rain. chinese food from family restaurants and rolling rock beer and sitting at neighborhood playgrounds on the swingset rocking back and forth with the carbonation buzzing in your brain. favorite moments include the pic of frank and gerard smoking on pool chairs and that pic of them in some grandmas house with wooden walls and a china and tchotchke cabinet and lace curtains and im pretty sure mikeys sitting on the leg of a couch.it was my desktop bg for a year or two.

3. black parade; i really appreciate the death topic and i will admit i struggle to get on the Hope wavelength throughout esp in famous last words ykno the keep on living part but there are some of my favorite fucking demos like emily and all the angels and im Pretty surE desert song but smack my ass and call me a moron if its wrong. i will say visually other than the marching band outfits its the least interesting era, the white hair was just kinda there to me and no one else had anything outstandingly russling my jimmies. frank did have some cute hair curls on his bangs tho sometimes. i do rlly like the whole haunted vibe tho bc of the paramounts effect on them tho, when i notice it in songs and lyrics it is pretty effective in makin my spine straighten with the hollow eyed, sleepless and frankly a little scared nervous energy. house of wolves has been in my rotation the past month or so bc it reminds me of trevor gta a lot. wttbp i skip every time just about. i save that song for when people are trying to be emo allies and queue it on the aux or when it comes on the radio or in public. blood is AMAZING and reminds me a lot of the song air from the hair soundtrack, and i wonder if gerard was trying to specifically mimic that songs vibe because if u ask me thats very gerard. i think overall the concept and the lore of the album's fruition appeal to me more than anything else, i also love mother war and some of the other various character designs.

4. current era; im saying this because foundations of decay is literally that promising of a single and the shows' outfits are so wonderful and the energy and love and happiness is just so fucking palpable that i already know this is where the new album is gonna sit for me. its gonna be so fucking good. we all know this so well. favorites include nurse gerard the mikey fuckin way shirts and that slicked back hair gerard mmf yum

5. danger days; im SORRRY i just. the songs only appeal to me on a surface level aside from destroya and i always just get rlly bad feelings when i see pics of gerard bc i know he said he was starving himself and it makes me :/ more than anything else seeing him. i feel Bad saying he looked hot. this is also the only album with songs i actively dislike within. i will say that when i say i like destroya. i fucking Love destroya. its so good its so fucking good its everything to me. OH and im gonna include the killjoys comic in this and say that even though i love it so fucking much its not enough to put it above current era. its not that i dislike danger days. its that every other era is so strong compared in my mind that since something has to be last it will be this. favorite moments include the videos of them behind the scenes for na na na laughing and having fun the photoshoot with the backdrop where they're all underneath it and gerard looks like a fucking otherworldly being level insane like hes made of porcelain and the mv shots of them in the trans am at night especially going in the tunnel speeding ass out of town. i will add that i discovered mcr thru sing bc it was on a rhythm game i owned at 11 and i still remember the two days before mcr broke up when i finally remembered to give them a listen and openly cried watching them all die in the killjoy vids so theres a nostalgic rawness that part of me wants to leave preserved like an artifact at a museum.

anyway novel over those are my full thoughts on the mcr eras

THOUGHTS ON THE NEW MUSIC BTW. PLEASE.

OK SO THIS TOOK ME A WHILE TO ANSWER BUT. I wanted to listen to the full album more than once to give my proper thoughts. Honestly at first I wasn't rlly that impressed by youth's beginning but as I watched the mv while continuing to listen to it I started liking it more. And listening to it once again has made me realize that it's a fucking bop actually. It DOES seem a little short but thematically it makes sense

Oh my fucking god bad liar has a similar vibe to kihyun's cover of bad and it slaps so hard. The part at the beginning makes me lose my mind. The vibe the instrumental gives me is this detective noir drama (hyungkicore). I think the chorus surprised me bc the buildup to it seemed like it was gonna go somewhere else, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The song itself showcased kihyun's voice so well. He served so hard (OF FUCKING COURSE HYUNGWON COMPOSED THE SONG. SCREAMING CRYING AND SHAKING)

Stardust was rlly fun. Another certified bop. It has a high school nostalgia vibe

Brb screaming at the moon after listening to where is this love. This is almost like the dreaming all over again (almost. If there will ever be another monsta x song like the dreaming I think I would ascend on the spot. I'm gonna go listen to the dreaming now). And OF COURSE hyungwon composed this too. He has the range...

I liked cause of you a fair amount. It had a fun instrumental, it just didn't necessarily stand out to me when compared to some of the other songs (the 1 sec piano bit in the middle was so good tho)

Anyway I can't believe we got FIVE whole songs for this album, and kihyun ate all of them up. And I can't believe hyungwon composed 2/5 of them....everyone say thank u to kihyun and hyungwon

"Del Oro" - Floating Points

This new single from Floating Points is a sleek tech house jam. I'm admittedly a bit unfamiliar with his work on the whole, besides his excellent collaboration with Pharoah Sanders from a few years ago. Hearing this definitely makes me want to dive further into his more electronic stuff. The little switch-ups throughout this song are just super exciting to me. Very, very well made. Hopefully this leads into a full album announcement soon.

"Treat Each Other Right" | "Life" - Jamie xx

Jamie xx and The XX have sort of flew under my radar for a long time, but this month I finally listened to XX's debut and I was absolutely floored by the production. One of the best sounding albums I've heard in a long time, incredibly influential too. That great production is also present on these two new tracks from Jamie xx's new album In Waves. I absolutely adore the sampling on "Treat Each Other Right," it's just so infectious. "Life" with Robyn is also pretty good. It's a more straight-forward jam, but very enjoyable. Need to go back and listen to his other albums in anticipation for this new one.

"Petco" - Cassandra Jenkins

Cassandra Jenkins is 3-for-3 on these new singles for her upcoming album next month. This one is a bit noisier than the other two, but it's also gorgeous. Jenkins has an ethereal presence on this track and the noisy guitars juxtapose that nicely. I also adore the melodies she writes, she's a very good songwriter. I'm very excited for this album, I have a feeling it will be her strongest work to date.

"Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi" - Friko

This is definitely a cover of Radiohead's "Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi" from up-and-coming Chicago band Friko. I definitely heard this and experienced it. I kid a little bit, this is a decent cover, albeit a bit unnecessary. I'm probably just being a party pooper though, there's nothing wrong with it. I do love the added strings in this version, but I probably won't come back to this much.

"New Way Out" - Poppy

I have a complicated relationship with Poppy's music. She hasn't made anything I've outright hated, but few of her songs have left a lasting impression on me. "New Way Out" is kinda the same story. It's fine, enjoyable enough, but nothing I'm super invested in. I do think the chorus is very good, it feels epic. Maybe one day Poppy's music will click for me, but that day is not today.

"Sublime Eternal Love" - Chrystabell & David Lynch

At the end of last month, legendary filmmaker David Lynch teased something new was coming on "June Five," well "June Five" came and we got this new single from Chrystabell and David himself. Lynch is no stranger to collaborating with singers, see his iconic collab with Julee Cruise, so this is pretty exciting. He has worked with Chrystabell in the past and she was even a prominent character in Twin Peaks: The Return, so there's history here. The song is chilling, it values atmosphere above all, but it captivates you. You just get lost in it and when you don't even realize it, the song is over. I'm a big David Lynch fan so I'm very excited for this. Chrystabell also confirmed on Twitter that the late Angelo Badalamenti performed on this album which is just so awesome.

"HOT ONE" | "BLACK FLAG FREESTYLE" - Denzel Curry

Denzel Curry has a new album on the way, the sequel to his King of the Mischievous South mixtape he released when he was 17, and it sounds like he's getting back in touch with his roots. "HOT ONE" is a southern hip hop banger, pure and simple. It features good performances from TiaCorine, A$AP Ferg, and Curry himself. The beat sounds so classic, I love it. "BLACK FLAG FREESTYLE" is a bit weaker, but it's a freestyle - it's not gonna be as tight and focused. Still, Curry shines here. He sounds reinvigorated on these songs. Really looking forward to this project, if this single is any indication I think it'll be a very fun listen.

"Russian Roulette" - Porter Robinson

Porter Robinson is one of those artists I just haven't gotten around to listening to for the longest time. This month I finally listened to his last album, Nurture, and was pretty impressed by it. This new single is very different from the stuff on that record, leaning much more heavily into indie pop. I like it! There's some very personal lyrics here and some silly ones, like the ones referencing Pitchfork's notorious review for that one Jet album. I'm looking forward to this new album! Glad to finally be on the Porter Robinson train.

"Please Please Please" - Sabrina Carpenter

I guess I can see why people are captivated by it, but I'm just bored. I'm so tired and jaded with the state of pop music right now which definitely isn't helping. I just want something exciting. Something cool and interesting ... PLEASE.

"Genesis." - RAYE

RAYE released a 7-minute cut, that is also split into three different parts, which details with her struggles with being in your 20s and constantly feeling like you're missing out on things you should be experiencing. Worrying about your place in the world and the world itself for that matter. I'm in the same boat, so the sentiment hits home for me. The song itself is good too, but I do wish it pushed things a bit further. I think the song would be more striking with some punchier production, but it's still a really solid song.

SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE are returning with a new album in a few months and this lead single is very promising. I adore how this song sounds. That kind of classic psychedelia with some songwriting that has some bite to it. It's almost eery at points. Really digging this, can't wait to listen to the new album.

"don't rely on other men" - JPEGMAFIA

JPEGMAFIA, perhaps the biggest name in experimental hip hop right now and also one of the most annoying people on the internet, has returned with a new collab with Freaky. It's fine, it's what you would expect from Peggy at this point. The beat is weird, he has confrontational bars, etc. etc. you get the picture. A lot of this song is a response to people's justified criticism of his recent collaborations with Ye on the Vultures album. I'm still a fan of his music, but he reeks of insecurity about the criticism he's been facing regarding this. Like I don't know man, maybe you built your image on calling out racists, neo-nazi metal bands like Burzum, and waiting for "Morrissey to fucking die, " only for you to turn around and post a pic of you and Kanye - who need I remind everyone was doing a PR tour about how much he loves Hitler and is CURRENTLY being sued by his former assistant for sexual harrassment - while he was wearing a Burzum shirt. Like this criticism isn't unfounded and deep down he knows that. He's kinda going through an insufferable phase right now, but hopefully he pulls through. Hopefully with more interesting songs than this one too.

"Phoneglow" | "Eyes Go Blank" - Burial & Kode9

Burial and Kode9 have released a joint single and it's pretty good! Both cuts are nothing too special, but they're nice listens. "Eyes Go Blank" might honestly be the standout for me here despite not being familiar with Kode9's work. It goes insane at some points. It's also nice to see Burial being so active as of late.

"Favourite" - Fontaines D.C.

Fontaines D.C. have released another incredible single leading up to their new album in a few months. If the whole album is as strong as the last two singles, we're in for something truly special. The band dive into softer, more jangle pop sounds here to really great effect. This song just chugs along effortlessly, it's sort of captivating. Just a damn fine song. This is without a doubt one of my most anticipated releases of the year, super excited to hear Romance in full.

"Road to Mandalay" - Laurie Anderson

Experimental icon Laurie Anderson has announced a new album alongside this new single. Amelia is a concept album about .. Amelia Earhart which is a concept that I only think Anderson could pull off effectively. This song is weird and short, it feels mostly like a teaser, but it has that off-putting charm Anderson is known for. We'll see how this turns out!

"#19 (Stone in Focus)" - Aphex Twin

Richard D. James has come out of hiding to announce an expanded edition of his 1994 album Selected Ambient Works Volume II. Alongside that, "#19" was released on streaming services - which I learned soon after from bigger Aphex Twinheads than I, that this is a massive deal. Apparently the song has been dubbed by fans as "Stone in Focus" and it was a vinyl exclusive track for the longest time, bar from a video of the song on YouTube with a monkey meditating in the background. Yeah, this song is amazing. One of his most striking and serene ambient pieces. The lazy, but always timely, synths are just like heaven on the ears.

"The girl, so confusing version with lorde" - Charli XCX

🥇 BEST SONG OF THE MONTH

◇ released: June 21, 2024 ◇ genres: electropop, electro house, dance pop

Unprecedented feat in the history of these month in reviews where an artist wins both the coveted "BEST ALBUM OF THE MONTH" AND the prestigious "BEST SONG OF THE MONTH" all in the same month, but Charli XCX has done it. Her incredible album BRAT dropped this month with a song entitled "Girl, so confusing" which detailed Charli's contentious relationship with another woman in the industry. Many speculated on who it could be, but we got our answer with this remix. It was Lorde. The two then hopped on the remix and worked things out, Lorde giving a great performance here that was extremely sobering and quite devastating. It was just such a cool, sweet moment to see these two handle their issues in this public way that also elevates the song itself. In both versions of the song, Charli sings "And when we put this to bed / The internet will go crazy" and that they did. With rumors of a full BRAT remix album on the way at some point, I'm just so excited. This whole album rollout has been one of the best "events" in music this year.

"feelslikeimfallinginlove" - Coldplay

Coldplay's last album was their worst, plain and simple. A horrible, awkward mish-mash of styles with only a singular highlight that feels like an anomaly. So, did they correct course on this new single, the lead to their new album? I guess? It's a sweet, cutesy ballad that doesn't have much weight to it at all. I don't hate it, but I can't say I love it either. Just has me shrugging my shoulders. I guess we'll see how the rest of this album plays out, I'm not very optimistic at all.

"Pour Me a Drink" - Post Malone & Blake Shelton

◇ released: June 21, 2024 ◇ featured on F-1 Trillion (not yet released) ◇ genres: country pop, contemporary country

Post Malone seems like a pretty charming guy, but it's hard not to look at this shift into country music cynically. We all saw those videos of pre-fame Posty singing Bob Dylan songs with his acoustic guitar, yet he still made a fortune occupying the hip hop space before transitioning into more alt-pop and pop rock sounds, now landing firmly in country. It seems like this is what he always wanted to do and that sucks, too many white rappers seem to view hip hop as a stepping stone to fame beyond it - look no further than MGK. Sooner or later, Jack Harlow will probably be making country music too. The bad news for Post is that he manages to stick out like a sore thumb in any genre he ventures into. He has no home and not in the cool way, it just feels awkward. This new song with Blake Shelton is further proof of that, it's simply fine. It feels both like a pastiche and a genuine attempt to make a good country song and it just ends up in the middle doing neither.

"Reason Why" - SOPHIE

It's hard to understate the impact SOPHIE's passing had on the pop music ecosystem. We lost one of the most bold visionaries of our era far before she had reached her peak. To be honest, I still get emotional thinking about it - it's just incredibly tragic. SOPHIE's family, among other collaborators, recently announced a posthumous album of material she had given permission to be released. "Reason Why" is the first taste of that record, a song that's been beloved for years among her fans in the form of a leak and other live performances officially released for the first time. It's very good, definitely SOPHIE in pop mode as opposed to boundary-pushing experimentalist, but it's still so unique. Kim Petras gives a rare highlight performance here as does BC Kingdom. Really digging this track and I can't wait to hear the rest of the record. One of the few posthumous releases that doesn't feel predatory, this feels like it was made with love.

"Common Loon" - Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu have announced a new album coming this September alongside this new single "Common Loon" and this might be my favorite song they've released this decade. It's a lot poppier than their last album especially, but whenever Xiu Xiu go pop they maintain that weirdness that makes them special. There's a brutality to it all regardless and that's the case here as well. The loud, abrasive guitar riff leading into the bludgeoning synths - ah, I needed this. Xiu Xiu have been one of the most consistent bands over the last few years especially, stretching back to Angel Dust, and it looks as if this next album could be another heater.

"Getting No Sleep" - Tinashe

I'm embarrassingly late to the Tinashe hype, but I'm here now!!! Following her big viral moment with "Nasty," she comes out swinging yet again with another very enjoyable R&B cut with a future garage edge. She has the most nonchalant hooks, but they just grab you. I feel like she's on the verge of a real big breakthrough, hopefully Quantum Baby is what catapults her to the next level.

"Nomad" - Clairo

I wish I could get into these new Clairo singles more. Unfortunately "Nomad" also doesn't stick with me all that much as did her last single. They're fine, pleasant on the ears, but they just don't leave a lasting impression on me. These songs are just far too weightless for their own good. That chorus is cool though. I'm hoping maybe I'll eat crow when I listen to the full record in a few weeks, but this isn't shaping up to be all that exciting.
