Tesco Petrol Bomb (2011) Banksy - The Great Communicator in Trieste, Italy   Tesco Petrol Bomb shows a lit petrol bomb in a brown Tesco bottle. The bottle has the well-known blue and white Tesco value label. The neck of the bottle is stuffed with a burning cloth. The label reads "Petrol Bomb." It's a show of support for those who were arrested during the 2011 Bristol riots. People were protesting the new Tesco Express that opened in the Stokes Croft area. The protests became violent and people were arrested. Banksy produced several prints for sale and donated the profits to those who need to pay for legal assistance. People were able to buy the posters exclusively at Bristol's Anarchist Bookfair days after the riots broke out. Tesco Petrol Bomb is also a symbol of the supermarket expansion. Supermarkets are detrimental to free markets as local shops are getting wiped out. No Ball Games (Green), 2008 Banksy - The Great Communicator in Trieste, Italy   No Ball Games first appeared a an artwork on canvas in 2006 at Barely Legal, Banksy‘s seminal exhibit in Los Angeles. However, in this first version, kids are playing with a TV displaying the image of a ball… Three years later, Banksy reproduced the piece as a spray-painted mural in Tottenham in North London, on a shop wall at the junction between Tottenham High Road and Philip Lane. No Ball Games portrays two children playing outside with what appear to be a sign that reads, “NO BALL GAMES” as if it were a ball itself. The image, portrayed in Banksy’s iconic stencil-style, is obviously rich with irony. The artist is making a social comment on how even basic children’s activities seem to be now controlled and regulated, thus maybe even encouraging children (and adults) to break rules. The irony of No Ball Games critiques the rules that Banksy believes restrict society on a daily basis. Banksy mocks overprotective governments, or “nanny states,” interfering with personal choice, implying that even innocent, everyday children’s activities like playing ball outside are controlled by the state. Obviously, the children should be taken more widely as symbols for people in general, constantly under surveillance and regulation by a higher authority against the artist warns us.  In 2013, the mural in Tottenham was removed from the wall and divided into three parts and sold to benefit disadvantaged children. Banksy released an edition of screen-prints on paper in two colorways in 2009: Green and Grey, each in an edition of 250 signed prints. Cinderella’s treacherously grim castle in Dismayland, 2015 Banksy - The Great Communicator in Trieste, Italy Dismaland was a temporary art project organised by street artist Banksy in the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. Prepared in secret, the pop-up exhibition at the Tropicana, a disused lido, was "a sinister twist on Disneyland" that opened during the weekend of 21 August 2015 and closed on 27 September 2015, 36 days later. Banksy described it as a "family theme park unsuitable for children". The aesthetic of the "bemusement park" was potentially inspired by the "Dismayland" series of paintings created by American artist Jeff Gillette, who also participated in the exhibition. Banksy created ten new works and funded the construction of the exhibition himself. The show featured 58 artists of the 60 Banksy originally invited to participate. 4,000 tickets were available for purchase per day, priced at £3 each. It received 150,000 visitors in the five-week period it was open. Every bit as good as that sounds.’ Barcode, also known as Barcode Leopard, shows a majestic leopard in the foreground who just escaped from his cage, resembling a barcode on wheels. At first sight, this print is a clear criticism on the way humans use animals for their own entertainment, having created zoos or sea-parks. The barcode serves as a symbol of consumerism and capitalism. Banksy Vinyl Covers Banksy - The Great Communicator in Trieste, Italy Many painters, graffiti and street artists have collaborated throughout their careers with other artists on their projects, but most common are ones with musicians, whether creating music videos or album covers. Some of the art world’s biggest stars have done some amazing works with musicians – most recently, Jeff Koons did an album cover for Lady Gaga’s “ARTPOP”, but he was not the one who started it. Back in 1955, the comedian, actor, and musician Jackie Gleason took the painting of his good friend, artist Salvador Dali and used it as a cover for his “Lonesome Echo” album. The Son of a Migrant From Syria (2015) Banksy - The Great Communicator in Trieste, Italy Location: The Jungle, Calais, France The Son of a Migrant from Syria appeared on December 2015 in the “Jungle”, a nickname for the encampment near Calais, France, where migrants lived as they attempted to enter the United Kingdom. The artwork portrays Steve Jobs, the late co-founder and former CEO of Apple, as a traveling migrant. The Refugees crisis is one theme dear to Banksy, addressed through several powerful murals realized in Calais, notably in a refugee camp also known as the “Jungle”, where around 7,000 migrants and refugees had to set their temporary home, the majority originally from Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea.
