The other day while on #MarcoPolo with @jlwalke2 the discussion question was "What book do you wish you'd written?" I immediately thought Steinbeck's #OfMiceAndMen Then, my mind said of course, all Steinbeck, all Irving, and all Austen. Then I slowed down and truly considered the impact certain books had on me. This is debut novel of Carson McCullers when she was only 23 years old. The heart is a lonely hunter is an incredibly wonderful, touching and moving story. The story follows a deaf man, John Singer, in a Georgia mill town in the 1930s. Singer is lonely after his one good friend, Spiros, is taken away to a mental hospital after displaying obscene and inappropriate behaviour. Singer left on his own gradually becomes a confidante to four different individuals in town - tomboy Mick Kelly, who loves music and hopes to someday escape the town; diner owner Biff, who is in an unhappy marriage with Alice; Dr. Copeland, a black man who wishes he could inspire more people to improve themselves; and Jake, a political protester who struggles with alcoholism. The lives of these individuals are intertwined and Singer acts as a medium for them to share their joys and sorrows. This is engrossing read and I shed a few tears at the emotions this book brought out in me. El otro día contaba de ese momento tan extraordinario que fue para mí encontrar a un vendedor de mamey, probar la fruta, experimentar esa pequeña muerte con el trocito de mamey en la lengua, escuchar a la chica verbalizar lo que yo sentía en ese momento (¡Dios mío, qué bueno es!, dijo)… yo compartía esa alegría, pero no la tristeza posterior que sentí después. Fue breve pero lacerante. La consciencia de la soledad. De saber que aquello que estaba experimentando, para mí tan grandioso, era difícil de transmitir, porque para otros el mamey era solo una fruta mientras para mí era poesía pura. La tristeza de la incomunicación. Una incomunicación que no tiene que ver con las palabras. 

“El corazón es un cazador solitario” es también un libro que está lleno de incomunicación. Más se comunica un sordomudo (el protagonista), a través de su silencio comprensivo, que el resto de sus personajes parlanchines. En esta novela está esa otra escena en la que he estado pensando. Tan solo esto: dos hombres que están terriblemente solos en este mundo, comparten una naranja, así, en silencio.

Y ese gesto tan simple que es tomar una naranja, pelarla, ofrecerla al otro, es algo tan rompedor. Porque ese simple gesto puede acabar con toda la soledad del universo. En un momento así yo también querría compartir una naranja (nunca un café). O un mamey, pongamos el caso. Porque eso mismo sentí yo aquella tarde en que lo descubrí: un enorme deseo de pelarlo, ofrecerlo a alguien y romper cualquier cosa que pudiera separarme de esa otra persona. La soledad o cualquier vaina de esas.
