this book (Theories of Modern Bible Translation by Edward Greenstein) is really fascinating and the commentary from this chapter on the famously influential and awesome Buber-Rosenzweig translation is just absolutely delighting from a translation perspective. the b-r translation was a huge influence i know on the english translation of the torah by Everett Fox, which is my favorite i’ve ever read. but however EVEN THIS—

THE ABSOLUTE FUCKING COWARDICE??????????????? WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO SAY MOSES CANNOT COMMAND G-D EVEN IN THE CONNOTATIONS OF TRANSLATION?????? if moses can announce to the people in hebrew using the exact same word moses uses to announce to g-d in hebrew, who are YOU to decide that a command-connotation german word can be deployed on g-d’s side to but the symmetry of the hebrew on moses’s side must be destroyed in german? what are you DOING translating with a consistent method for if you’re too much of a little bitch to lean into openings afforded BY translation????? who are you to decide which ones to make a fucking exception for??????????

and, and, and, where does ‘CLEARLY i have to stop my method and make an Exception because CLEARLY it cannot be allowed to imply x’ cross the line from cowardice to literally denying the reader, and the characters of moses and g-d, the ability to hear, speak, be seen, and be heard?????

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.

The world exists in such a baffling state of simultaneous sex-aversion and sex-hegemony. Every social platform on the internet is trying to banish sex workers to the shadow realm but I can't post a tweet without at least two bots replying P U S S Y I N B I O. People are self-censoring sex to seggs and $3× but every other ad you see is still filled with half-naked women. Rightwingers want queer people arrested for so much as existing in the same postal code as a child and are also drumming up a moral panic about how teenage boys aren't getting laid enough. I feel like I'm losing my mind.

Studying linguistics is actually so wonderful because when you explain youth slang to older professors, instead of complaining about how "your generation can't speak right/ you're butchering the language" they light up and go “really? That’s so wonderful! What an innovative construction! Isn't language wonderful?"

so it’s true that in judaism g-d doesn’t have the sort of appearance you could make a ‘faceclaim’ for. however g-d does get associated with various physical or visual things (mostly fire and smoke, the appearance of the ark of the covenant, etc, throughout the torah) and has partial attributes and descriptions across various songs and passages and visions.

so basically what you COULD come up with for g-d is a gijinka.
