it's been three months and I still haven't processed the Bentley playing Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy at Crowley (when I'm not with you, think of you always) as he drove (I miss you) back (just take me back to yours, that will be fine) to Aziraphale (love you) with a really sincere apology in mind (say the word, your wish is my command). barely a few seconds of normal driving in central London, squeezed in a plot point of "oh shit, extreme sanctions" and their meetup. easy to overlook. unless? it's literally top 5 of Their Queen Love Songs. in any context other than the sheer panic Crowley was experiencing I would take this scene to my grave as peak romanticism, because we know Bentley is an extension of Crowley's mind, and it feels like it tries to comfort him in that moment? (everything's all right, just hold on tight) Recognizing the crushing, overwhelming, all-encompassing love that Crowley is feeling, and boiling it down to simply being suave and charming, casual, like he so often pretends to be (I learned my passion in the good old-fashioned school of loverboys).

it's just the stuff of fanfics, but given to you in the typical Neil Gaiman fashion of subverting expectations, while also allowing for, well, gently playing on your heartstrings. I love it, I love that we got that, bless

#queen band #i. think i may have a new favorite album #man. i don't adore every single song #man on the prowl and machines back to humans are kinda eh #but even then they're still decent! pretty listenable!#to me this is just objectively peak queen #if not purely in overall quality then in just. the queenness of the album's vibe.#it does not get more queen than this #to be clear i don't mean it sounds refined or regal or queenly or whatever #i mean it sounds LIKE QUEEN #it's possibly one of their most quintessentially queen-sounding albums #and i love it. they really came into their own on this one #as much as i prefer freddie mercury's seventies looks/aesthetics/hair to his eighties style #i think his- and the band's- work only really picks up into the eighties. and the works is the perfect example!#oh to be sure they had their share of bangers in the seventies and earlier eighties.#bohemian rhapsody. don't stop me now. good old fashioned loverboy. etc #and even the lesser known ones like the prophet's song #and long away and death on two legs which i adore #but they really found their style in the works! imo it's the culmination of queen💙

#robison points out in a footnote that the biographies of her out there add very little to the historiography around her #(and of the biographies he cites only one gives her a lengthy treatment - the rest are from compilation biographies of english queens)#(this was also in 2018 so he's not referring to katherine j. lewis's chapter on her which came out this year)#honestly i find this to be very true - that she's always discussed with the same kind of narrative #(i read 3/4 of the biographies he cites and a couple he doesn't and when i was writing the post on catherine as a political agent #i went back and reread them and it was amazing how they all followed the same kind of narrative beats #the wooing scene from shakespeare! did she love henry v? widowhood and attempted romance with edmund beaufort! mrs tudor time! death)#(i'm also reminded of a comment kavita mudan finn made about how tudor-era writings tended to depict catherine's marriage to owen tudor #in a way that subsumes her agency in making the marriage into a wider narrative about the destined rise of the tudors)#and while there's less emphasis on destiny as a mystical force we're still eliding catherine's agency from the story #or pushing it into the realm of the domestic - at least one novel focuses on how her tudor marriage makes catherine abandon the political #world and the trappings of court to focus on her children husband and house - something akin to a housewife #(while still being - of course - the fairest and most fashionable and smartest and hottest woman in the realm)#- and i think it even depicts her gardening. she even celebrates the lives of peasants as the ideal because they're 'free')#(which. what.)#catherine de valois #shakespeare #historiography #historical fiction #historian: william b. robison

the like... dianamania i’m seeing on the internet today sure is something. i mean yeah it’s 100% true that the royal family and the tabloids mistreated her, but she was the daughter of a viscount, she had the title “lady” before she even met charles... it’s just crazy that our primary avatar for revenge against the head of one of the most wretched and evil empires in history is someone else from the queen’s milieu, as opposed to like... people colonised & subjugated in her name.
