One of my favorite character traits that Junpei has is how as much as he's protective and caring to his favorite people and impulsively jumps into danger to help others if he has an opportunity to without wanting anything in return and highly values the promises he makes he just seems to also always be more curious than he is sensible or empathetic, he gets so caught up on the horrors he sees but he has such a hard time looking away, he's right to analyze and be intrigued by the ninth man's remains but he stands around staring at it until he pukes, in the showers you can interact with the wall behind which lies "Snake's" corpse and he will pick up more details about it each time you click on it until he has to mentally rip himself away because it's not that he can't keep looking at it it's that he better look away and focus on getting out, and the way he talks to Clover about the body with every minutiae she wouldn't want to hear is like his brain connects faster to his mouth than it can connect to his sense of morality sometimes which I guess turned out to be a good thing in this one case or just good common sense in general like there's other minor things he blurts out at times, he's stated to not have tact be his strongest suit, he's insensitive on accident trying to fumble through interactions even if he's entirely confident on what he's saying he's soo sharp when he has a goal in mind but he's soo dense if he's trying to just exist my man is so traumatized and his brain always seems to default to taking the most of any given situation in as possible to desensitize himself instead of any other response and sometimes it pushes his mind to be so single mindedly entranced on not ending up that way too that he'll describe a mangled body in excruciating detail to a grieving relative even if that's his friend and even if he feels guilty about it immediately as soon as he catches up with what just left his mouth instead of staying in his thoughts
#I did it I made a post about Junpei without talking about the Kurashikis!!#I am... still doing that here in the tags because that's how this train of thought started but... akdhsk#like I just started thinking how even in the everything is fine and junepei still has the capacity to be a healthy couple AU in my head#he would still have moments™ like this#how he would make invasive little questions about uncomfortable things to reminisce about#not realize he's overstepping right away not deal in the best way with Akane's meltdowns if she's doing bad enough to have them#kind of like in door 3 as in still being touchy and stuff but nothing bad on purpose#nothing like pushing her around like I still can't believe he canonically does in zero tiem dilemma#but yeah basically that's it that's the post I like Junpei a lot despite not being as present in my every waking thought as other character#and I love this about him love that he isn't just completely heroic that he has to struggle a bit#he's a protagonist that feels so generic for the first few minutes but he's anything but the more you play#I love how No One in ze is a good flawless person the way stories usually portray#they have quirks and hang ups that they are capable of doubling down on or turning for the worse under circumstances that push them to#again not. really including zerotiemdillema on that one but you get what I mean#zero escape#zero escape spoilers#999 spoilers#junpei 999#junpei tenmyouji#every character in this series who ultimately wants to do good has to struggle so much with the horrors around them and in themselves for i#and then there still aren't right simple answers and they still try for the slim possibility that things can be okay this time and I love i#escape room convention but it's a time loop

To: @handsometimr
From: @juricha-art
Hello, @handsometimr ! 'Tis I, Juricha, your Zecret Santa this year and I bring to you some gifts and Christmas cheer!
Prompt 1: Anything Akane/Junpei, bonus if they adopted a baby Quark post ZTD and uncle Aoi shows up.
This one was the hardest to draw because I wanted it to as cute and cozy as possible, but couldn't for the life of me think of a proper way to do so. Christmas Eve. The tree and decorations are all put up, Junpei is finishing up the preparations, and Akane is trying to put the kids — their twins, Rei and Nova, and adopted little Quark —  to sleep. But they are all too excited, because they know that Santa is coming tonight. So the only thing to do is to snuggle together in a big armchair and tell them some magical stories. After they fall asleep, Junpei finds this idyllic scene and decides to not disturb them, covers them up with a blanket and kisses them all goodnight, his heart sewling with love and joy. And who is that at the door?..
Prompt 2: The first Christmas Sigma/Diana spent together in Rhizome-9. My heart will shatter even more if Sigma's first Christmas without Diana is touched upon. But for Christmas cheer there's always Sigma/Diana's first Christmas together post ZTD, with Phi! I picked the more cheerful version this time, so I hope it's okay! I did my best to touch upon the opther timelines a bit, though!
Phi visits Sigma and Diana on Christmas and finds out that they are now engaged! They spend a nice evening together. But if one looks closely, one can see the sinister reflections of many a horrible end — and sometimes with some happiness found — they might have met sometime, somewhere. Thank goodness they could find a happy ending to their story! Prompt 3: Anything with Maria, any depiction is cool w me! We need more of Carlos' sister. I drew a festive portrait of Maria, because we never see her in-game. I kinda got inspired by Maria Robotnik, with all the terminal illness and somebody trying to save the poor girls and screaming "Maria!" stuff.
And I now kind of headcanon her to be a fellow Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 enjoyer, watchnig Carlos play for her. After she was cured, she went to Kurashikis' wedding together with her brother and made friends with Akane and the others. She got so inspired that she roped Carlos into studying Japanese. Akane and Junpei are proud of her. I think the pearls and the purple-pink colors suit her.
All three artworks were done with a new technique I picked up recently — buying alcohol ink and splattering it across the page, hoping it would not go somewhere I do not want it to go. Then coloring the pictrues with the alcohol markers proper, then adding a bit of ink, acrylic markers and pencil (I really like the Cretacolor pencil that I used for outilining Maria, I think it goes well with the lighter colors and not as overbearing as the darker liners) and editing them a bit after scanning. This year was a rather busy one for me, and I didn't draw much (plus was sick through most of December), so I feel like I'm out of shape. I do hope that you — and everyone else — like the end results! Also, I cannot believe that I've been participating in ZEcret Santa for five consecutive years!, since 2019! Thank you for having me on board for so many years!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to @handsometimr , the ZEcret Santa crew and the entire Zero Escape fandom! May the next year be healthy and productive for everyone! Love and cheers, Juricha.

would love love love to hear any thoughts u want to share on the weed smoking grandpas au i absolutely LOVE everything vlr and especially everything here
hi. life is busy so it took me a hot second to answer this but anon i love you so much. I shall explain quark and his weed-smoking grandpas to you to the best of my abilties
so basic premise
so this is an "au" (in that its not DIRECTLY contradicted by canon. but also is) from the minds of me and my bestie remy @argentsunshine (read his ze fanfic) where long story short quark is raised by aoi light and junpei who have been hanging out since the radical-6 pandemic happened
short story long this somewhat connects to 'apocalypse au' which is again, just canon, where at the beginning of the apocalypse junpei finds light (who is looking for clover) and on their way to try and find clover they find aoi frozen in one of those freeze pods
because akane saw the future and knew that aoi would get rad6 and die early on in the pandemic so in akane fashion she put him to sleep and didnt tell him anything
so now these three guys are just kind of hanging together trying to find akane and maybe clover failing to find clover experiencing complex emotions about akane kurashiki. about 35 years later give or take . they find a baby
more random shit under the cut.
aoi is very vehement that young children should believe in santa claus light thinks its pointless and stupid junpei is stuck in the middle of this. "okay santa"s are thrown around in such arguments often. quark isnt really sure what to think
aoi and junpei are taking on more concrete parenting roles while light mostly sits in the background dispensing fun facts and the energy of a wine aunt crossed with an actual grandfather
light field known transgender was partly at fault for the name 'quark' aoi hates this
the major influence light had on quarks upbringing is that one day he looked at aoi "stopped regularly attending school at age eight" kurashiki and junpei "not a great student who then also dropped out" tenmyouji and said someone has to teach this child. and started trying to teach him stuff that's so far above a child's level
from our google doc light aoi and junpei quote " spent a while searching slash forming an increasingly confusing polycule (aoi and light are together light and junpei are not romantically involved and not not romantically involved but a secret third thing junpei and aoi are. good question)"
junpei and light got married for tax reasons but aoi and light who you'd more expect to be married aren't so quark is very confused about what marriage as an institution entails
every time the topic of why him and aoi arent married comes up light gives a whole spiel on why marriage as an institution is heteronormative and outdated and then someone points out hes still married to junpei and light says what of it
anyways theres more to this but its split between an actual google doc and random screenshots of discord dms so that's all for now. if enough people like this post maybe i can bully remy into writing more actual stuff for this au

Virtue's Last Record: The Border
(Ok quick context: In order to get myself out of a writing rut, I decided to finish up these little pieces I started writing a while ago that are kind of my VLR and ZTD versions of the pieces I wrote for 999 week. Since they're short I thought I'd post them directly to Tumblr in addition to AO3, like I did in September)
To Akane, the inside of the armor is its own bizarre world. Title from the Wandersong OST CWs: None AO3
Akane is no stranger to that threshold between death and the living world. She spent nine years a phoenix, perpetually burning until she rose fighting from the flames. These past forty-five years, she’s been a zombie, casually sharing a universe with her own beheaded corpse in its desert grave. She has not known what it is to be fully alive since childhood, and as the third Nonary Game approached, she settled comfortably onto that delicate tightrope once more.
What she doesn’t expect is what it feels like to occupy the edge of her identity.
She has always been Akane Kurashiki, to those who mattered, at least. To those few, to Aoi, Carlos, Sigma, Akane Kurashiki was special and powerful. A half-living miracle. Kyle Klim is all of those things, as well, even if he never wanted to admit it, and even if he does look pitiful as Luna carries his sleeping, unarmored body to the garden. Akane has heard his woes, listened sympathetically as he screamed at her about being nothing more than a cheap replacement for his father. He is wrong to feel that way.
But even with his existing insecurities, Kyle will be spared from confronting new ones today; the amnesia will make sure of that, clouding his mind even before it is decided who should be wearing the armor.
For Akane, the duality strikes the moment she pulls on the first boot. Kyle’s leg is already inside. Not taking up physical room, no; it doesn’t feel like trying to squeeze her own dainty foot in besides his hulking one. But she feels the idea of his leg, the heaviness of his footfalls, the way he tends to shuffle his soles gloomily along the ground as he walks.
The same happens with each new piece of armor she dons. Kyle’s stomach growls as she locks on the chestplate, reminding her of how little he has let himself eat these past few months. His fists clench under the gauntlets, angry at nothing in particular. And the helmet swims with confusion as he fails to remember who he truly is.
He is scared, in a way Akane hasn’t been since she was twelve.
It would be silly let herself be affected by these phantom feelings. She still has vivid memories of Phi and Sigma incapacitating Dio and rescuing her, and until those start to fade, then Akane is alive and the one inhabiting the suit, while Kyle sleeps peacefully and safely. She will be monitoring the Nonary Game from the inside, directing it towards its intended conclusion. No one has anything to fear.
Of course, that stabbing pain in her chest still exists. Until Sigma and Phi choose to explore the crew quarters, Akane is dead. Flashes of her own demise are nothing new to her, but she has never experienced a version of the world where she is fully nonexistent. Kyle is forcing that to happen.
The participants in the Nonary Game are rightfully afraid here, as the benevolent force that would have guided them is dead. They are abandoned, and they feel this way accordingly. This is how her games make her victims feel. It isn’t good. She recognizes the fear in Clover even as she sleeps, curled up fetally on the AB Room floor; she is so attuned to being used that she can already tell something is wrong.
Of course, even if this were enough to make Akane question her behavior, it’s far too late to turn back now. When the time comes, she scoops Clover into her arms and leaps from the hatch, into the throng of participants, all of whom it is necessary to make suffer.
They all react with shock and suspicion to her robotic appearance. The hurt and embarrassment that washes over her in response is mostly her own, as she always strides to make her appearance as pleasing as she can. Kyle doesn’t seem to care so much, at least not the part of him that she can feel. This breaks Akane’s heart more than anything else, that he’s so used to looking monstrous. Still assuming she’ll survive this game, she makes a vow to do something very nice for Kyle afterwards. Perhaps she’ll get him a gift. As she desperately pretends to be him, she tries to take advantage of her closeness to his self to divine what he would like the best.
Their consciousnesses split too soon. And unfortunately, Akane is so far removed from herself that all she can think is that Kyle deserves a nice new bracelet.

I have the weirdest urge to write a long and deeply analytical post that no one besides myself will care about, but the thing is I don’t have anything for it to be about.
Usually I would write something about Bones on my Bones blog, but I don’t really have any Bones ideas right now.
My brother is rewatching iZombie and I’ve been sitting in for an episode here and there - I have more Opinions about iZombie than I have about any other show but none of them are very coherent.
I’ve been very into the Zero Escape series lately, but I haven’t finished watching the third game yet (yes, watching, I’m consuming these games via Let’s Plays, I am a fake fan) and I feel like I should have the full, very confusing context before I go posting about it all willy-nilly. Maybe I will get back to you once I’m done agonizing over Akane Kurashiki’s Myers-Briggs type.
Or maybe I could just psychoanalyze myself and make that a post. That would be fun and not at all horrible.

Fanfic ask game: A for Cat's Cradle, F, P, W and Z?
Yay thanks for the ask! :D For some reason I can’t make cuts so #long post #text heavy and I hope people’s filters pick those out
A: How did you come up with the title to Cat’s Cradle?
Firstly, there are two very good works with that title that I know of: Vonnegut’s novel and pengychan’s fic (which has a really good and probably my fave portrayal of Kubota). I wasn’t necessarily thinking of them when I wrote this fic, but there’s something about the game (it’s called ayatori in Japanese) that I guess resonates with us?
In my fic, Junpei likened Kubota’s emotions to the Gordian knot. The title of the chapters is part of the extended metaphor (as in ‘The knot unravels’ and ‘The tangled web’ for chapters 2 and 3). There’s a lot of strings there and I just went with that when I had to choose a title for the whole thing.
There’s also how when you try to make shapes while playing ayatori and have it all fail, you can get your hand ‘caught’  by the strings. Which is kind of like what happened to Junpei.
Lmao I don’t like talking about/explaining my fics because I feel people would be all ‘I didn’t see that at all and now my interpretation is ruined’ or ‘you’re so pretentious lol’ but here we are! :’D
F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
Oh wow this got really long? So I’m gonna put this under a cut! Well looks like cuts don’t work for me now. Wtf is happening.
This if from New Year’s Eve Bell, a fic I wrote for 365: A Soukoku Zine.
-
‘A promise is a promise.’ Dazai cheated, as Chuuya said. He doesn’t like taking chances, not when it matters, and has rigged the machine in the arcade before making a bet with Chuuya. ‘You said you'll be my dog.’
‘Never said that.’ Chuuya snorts, but even in the dim moonlight Dazai can see his face has turned pink. ‘You don't even like dogs.’
‘Fair.’ Dazai looks away from Chuuya, fixing his eyes on the temple bell as if it will start ringing if he stares hard enough. ‘Will you come with me?’
Chuuya breathes in sharply; any other time Dazai would have turned to look at him. But now Dazai finds he can't and has to satisfy himself with imagining the expression on Chuuya's face, surprise mingled with suspicion as he narrows his eyes at Dazai.
‘I'm not your dog.’
Dazai forces a soft laugh. ‘I know. That's why I'm asking.’
‘You'd really go so far just to fuck with the Mafia?’
In Mori's dreams Dazai will come back and become the Mafia's Boss. That’s not going to happen and the Mafia already has a perfectly capable second-in-command who can step into Mori's shoes once the old man pops his clogs.
It would be a shame if that second-in-command absconds with Dazai.
‘That's an added bonus, yes,’ says Dazai.
‘Oh?’ says Chuuya. ‘What's in it for me, then?’
‘Front row seat to my death bed.’ Dazai shrugs. ‘You'd want to make sure, wouldn't you? If I've really died. You can't just trust rumours.’
Dazai finally turns to look at Chuuya. For a moment they look at each other, until Chuuya breaks eye contact and laughs.
-
There are so many good Dazai/Chuuya fics in that zine and I’m probably the one person who went with a more gen interpretation (I didn’t tag the fic as Dazai/Chuuya so much as Dazai & Chuuya because I didn’t think it was shippy enough), but I love that convo because it allows the two of them just enough space to admit they are willing to keep each other company in their old age without admitting to their real feelings. I think it fits them.
When my roommate was all ‘that sounds like them’ I was very happy.
P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an “architect” or a “gardener”? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)
It depends on what people mean when they say planning. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like sitting down to write until I know how I start and how I end--something which surprised one of my writing professors because he’s the gardener type and doesn’t necessarily know where the story is going. But me, I like knowing point A and point B. Writing is usually just me trying to get there. That’s what I did for Kissing Santa: I knew what I needed and how it would end, I just had to reach that point. I didn’t plan on how to get there, though.
For fics like Dry-cleaning services, I had bullet points of themes I wanted to address and that’s probably one of the most ‘planned’ fics I’ve ever written. It’s still not planned, though.
My collab with @greaseonmymouth  Hope & Legacy, was also planned. Which makes sense because there were two of us writing the thing and we needed to know where to go and if it could be done within our time limit.
W: Do you like more general prompts, or more specific ones?
Either works for me! The thing is, no matter how specific the prompt I still might not follow the thing so :”D I’m very bad with interpreting prompts tbh.
Z: Major character death–do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?
I might not write major character death unless I have to. You know how when people ask if you really need to write the word ‘fuck’ in your work? That’s me with major character death. (I don’t care if the whole story is peppered with fucks.) It has to have a purpose other than to shock or wring out some easy tears from the reader. L’s death in Death Note is one of the inevitable deaths that I think is handled well. Kaworu’s death(s) in NGE is also good. The deaths in Harry Potter are not that great (especially I think compared to how the deaths were handled in say, Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain series).
In fic it depends on how the writer handles the subject. I’m not opposed to it, but like I said before, it needs to mean something for me.
A permanently dead Kurashiki Akane will probably make me not read the fic.

Don’tfirst headcanon that pops into my head: this isn’t necessarily mine but one of my favorite headcanons still is that his bracelet number in the first nonary game was 4, because of his whole “i hate the number 4 speech” in the second class cabinfavorite line from this character: probably his whole “i was her santa claus” speech in the safe ending. alternatively, “it’s some kind of snowman secret meeting!”one way in which I relate to this character: i, too, would commit crimes for akane kurashikithing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: ANY OF YOU CHUMPS SPEAK JAPANESE?cinnamon roll or problematic fave: oh i love him dearly but problematic fave
Phi
sexuality headcanon: ace lesbian probablyotp: don’t reeeaaally have any phi ships but i’ve seen a few posts about phi/maria, which is super cute and also rarepair hell, so i’m inbrotp: d-team!! "As you all know, I am very normal about Akane Kurashiki lol" is like a really fun joke to make we all say it here and there but y'know what I don't think ANYONE in-universe OR out has ever been normal about one Akane Kurashiki not even herself

Relationship Starter Call
So I’m the world’s worst plotter, but since I am giving this muse a fresh new start, I wanted to make a little list of ideas that I am interested in exploring for Akane. This will serve as the official announcement that Akane is being wiped of any and all memories outside of canon- however there are some interesting things I’d like to try and explore with this idea!
I’ve never done a mass thread call like this before, so please forgive the hasty organization! But by liking this post you are expressing interest in possibly threading in the future. I just want to gauge overall interest and hopefully open up some possibilities with this muse of mine. Without further delay, here are some relationships/plot ideas I would like to play around with:
co-scientists: Akane is a scientist at heart and there are many things about the interest that would catch their interest- the hole, the mist, the moon. If anyone wanted to explore the mysteries of the island a bit more, they’d certainly not mind exploring with another intellectual!
roommates: If you are one of Akane’s roommates (either in or around their apartment) they would love to meet ya! They are a really overly neat person and can be very particular about where they live.
fellow espers/psychics: This could mean pseudoscientists as well (astrology, ghost mediums, fortune tellers). Akane is very passionate about their powers, and would love to discuss or examine abilities with someone.
friendship/false-friends: Akane’s a rather manipulative person if the need arises. If they find an interest in someone and a need to using something they can provide, they aren’t above manipulating another into getting what they want. I can’t come up with any reasons atm they might, but hey akane’s faker than a $20 gucci bag. Any friendship could end up being sacrificed. They don’t warm up to people on a personal level and focus on the other person rather than themselves so... uh good luck and know the risk?
skeptic-sided debate buddies: You think the moon is real? You think the earth is round? You believe The Dress is gold and white? Akane’ll argue. They’d love to discuss conspiracies and outlandish ideas, typically on the extreme side of things. I’d love to establish a good debate partner, and prepare for some wild midnight thoughts from Akane Kurashiki.
enemies/cultists: Akane’s got a fixation on cult groups and their secret societies. Due to having lived through the disasters of the apocalypse due to cultists, they are sorta cult-crazy. They would love to look into cult groups and infiltrate later down the line. Any sort of “end humanity to cleanse it” ideology would draw them in. Other sorts of villains vary in interest for Akane just let me know.
friends from another universe: If your muse was someone close from their past group, then there is a chance that they can begin to connect memories through the morphogenetic field upon meeting. They can’t do much at a time (only short 5 minute memories 3x a day) but thats enough to open a discussion on re-meeting!
And of course I am always up to trying new things! If you feel like you have an idea or even if you just want our characters to interact, feel free to message me privately and we can talk- I promise I don’t bite. It’s easier for me to work with messenger apps than using tumblr’s ask system, so I will leave my ooc contact for twitter here and discord is available upon request. If you have any questions or concerns about my muse’s nature please contact me- I’ll talk things out with you :)
Thank you!

to: skylar @agentdate from: @kayzero Hi! Sorry if I twisted your prompts into something unrecognizable!
(prompts: post ztd sigma struggling to fit in + anything with d team being family)
In a base built into a crater on the moon, Akane Kurashiki heard Sigma Klim take a shuddering breath and knew that the Shift was successful. He was laid in bed in the hospital room behind the divider, and she could hear the rustling of sheets as he reacquainted himself with his circumstances.
She was also close enough to hear a muffled thud, the back of his fist hitting the mattress, most likely, and a barely audible growl. A failure, then. Pitiable, but there were other realities where he could have succeeded.
Akane waited exactly a minute, as was customary between them, before crossing the room and peering past the divider. Sigma was still visibly upset — interesting, considering how composed he was normally. Perhaps because the most recent failure was so final, there was no need to hide a negative reaction.
He looked up to see Akane, and tried to fix his features. A prominent scowl still remained, however.
“I’ll assume, since I’m here, that the Game was successful. If you don’t mind, I’d like to wait to debrief.”
“Of course,” Akane replied. And then, just to make sure, she said, “I would like to hear just a bit about your end of things.”
The scowl grew into a snarl for a split-second before Sigma closed his eyes to compose himself.
“I suppose there are two things I can impart before a full debrief. First, as far as we can tell, Radical-6 was never released.”
Oh? The project was successful? Then why was Sigma so…
“Secondly, the younger me missed the mark. By a full year.”
…Ah. A year with his young love, and then cruelly torn away.
Akane supposed she would be irate as well.
Sigma woke up in the past completely whole with a pair of babies in his arms. This was surprising on a few levels. The first was that he wasn’t missing any of his body parts — he knew his arms and eye had been replaced, and he assumed it was after whatever had happened in the Mars habitation experiment, but that appeared to not be the case.
Secondly, the wriggling infants that were exploring his face, frozen in fear like it was. Nobody told him to expect babies! He knew that they were reactive to people’s emotions so he was trying not to panic but it was getting harder because they were starting to notice his mild hysteria—
“Oh dear, did they wake you up?”
—and then he was saved. By a kind-looking redhead wearing a long skirt.
Now, he knew he was wrong, but he had to ask to make sure.
“Luna…?”
She looked shocked for a moment, then snorted and dropped her face into a hand, shaking with laughter. When she came back up, wiping a tear from her eye, she was muttering, “Of course. You would know yourself best, wouldn’t you?”
“I’m sorry?”
“Nothing, just a bet I lost with your other self.” She came over and took the babies from Sigma one after the other before introducing herself.
“My name is Diana. It will be a pleasure getting to know you, Sigma.”
He was taken aback. Not just by her kindness, but also…
“You sound so sure of that.”
She just smiled, just a little sad, and said,
“I am sure of it.”
Apparently, Sigma shared an apartment with Diana and her twins. And apparently, that apartment belonged to a compound owned by Crash Keys. Diana recommended that Sigma go and talk to Akane.
To better center himself, she said.
To figure out what he’s supposed to do now that there’s no apocalypse, he heard.
And wasn’t that a nice surprise, to find that the purpose of a nigh on torturous experiment was well and moot, to find out that Radical-6 had not only never escaped, but there had been no evidence to suggest that it had ever existed in the DCOM facility in the first place!
Yes, Sigma is happy that the world isn’t being destroyed. But now he’s just…
Lost. Without purpose.
He could go back to college? He’d only been missing for a few months, it wouldn’t be hard to get back to… normalcy.
What even was normal, anymore? Were the last two days just a dream?
Did he dream up Phi?
(He wanted to ask Diana about Phi, if she knew her, if she was part of DCOM, but something in the back of his head screamed that it would be a terrible idea, so he listened.)
Anyways. Akane.
She was supposed to be somewhere downstairs in the underground portion of the compound. Constantly working, Diana said, which matches Sigma’s perception of her in the future. Someone who was willing to let themselves be killed for a greater good doesn’t seem like someone with a good work-life balance — not that he’d say as much to her face.
Thankfully, for whatever reason, the compound was empty, so Sigma was able to just peek into rooms until he found one with a young woman hunched over a laptop typing furiously and a young man lounging in a chair behind her. It’s him that noticed Sigma first, standing awkwardly in the doorway trying to find a way to ask if this was the right room, and it’s him that snorted and shook his head.
“Hey, what do you know, it actually happened.” His comment makes the woman, hopefully Akane, look up from the laptop, take a single glance at Sigma, and sigh despondently before immediately turning back to her work.
“Uh, what happened?” Sigma’s forced to ask, still stuck in an awkward limbo.
“You Shifted back,” probably-Akane mumbles behind her screen. “We weren’t expecting it. It was mentioned offhand as a possibility, but not ever considered reality. Until now, I guess.”
“Wait, but me Shifting back was always the plan…”
“Well for starters, you’re a year off,” the guy takes over. “You were supposed to land in apocalypse-torn 2029, and instead you’re here, in hunky-dory 2030.”
“Aoi,” Akane says with a bit of reproach, then leans back away from her laptop to continue. “We were also discussing the possibility of this being too far of a branch timeline for you to be able to travel to, but obviously that theory was wrong.”
That part confused Sigma. If not having an outbreak of Radical-6 was enough to shift the timeline so far that he couldn’t return, then what was the point of Shifting back in the first place? That was the whole point! To prevent the outbreak! Which meant that if older Sigma did his job, this Sigma wouldn’t have a purpose at all. That was enough to try and deny the reality staring him in the face.
He tried to laugh it off. “I know that Shifting back and forth would create divergent timelines, but isn’t that the point? To make a future that isn’t ravaged by Radical-6? How could this branch be so far off that I wouldn’t even be able to land here, y’know?”
“That’s fair…” Akane agrees, putting her head in her hands in a way that really highlighted the bags under her eyes. “I guess he thought that between becoming a father and facing down a new apocalyptic threat, there might be enough interference to throw you off? I’m not really an expert on timeline theory…”
…Okay, one of those things was more important than the other, but Sigma really wanted to ask about the less important one. He refrained, though. “A new threat?”
“Yeah — we actually got the information from Zero, or Brother, as you’d know him. Some cultist or another trying to restart the world.”
“A cultist who was bent on ruining the world is telling us that a different cultist wants to ruin the world, is that what I’m hearing?”
“Yes, it does sound ridiculous when you put it like that, but the evidence is compelling.” Akane turned the laptop around, and you took a glance at graphs and data that didn’t have the  attention span to look into at that moment. “Someone else is tapping deep into the Morphogenetic Field and taking advantage of people in a way that worries me. And according to the information we were given, he has the ability to twist other people’s minds using the Field.”
Okay, so it was real as far as Akane knew, and it sounded serious. “How can I help?”
“Uh, well—”
“From where I’m sitting,” the man, Akane called him Aoi, cut in, “you’re missing about forty-five years of credentials.”
“Aoi!”
“No, he’s right,” Sigma interrupted Akane. “The other me has decades more experience than I do, that’s an unavoidable fact. But he’s gone now — and I’m here. I can’t imagine he would just sit back while all this was happening, what was he working on?”
Akane growls and rubs the bridge of her nose between her knuckle and thumb, but answers regardless. “His idea was to use machinery to get close to the cultist. An android of some kind. He was working on a robot that could pass for human that could serve as an infiltrator.”
“Oh, that’s a genius idea! It gets around the issue of corruption through the Morphogenetic Field entirely by not using a human brain!” Sigma ignores the fact that he has zero knowledge of programming or machine learning, and barely any experience putting a robot together in the first place. “Do you have any of his work that I can look over and get a base?”
“We can have a laptop ready for you tomorrow,” Aoi declares, to Akane’s sigh. “In the meantime, why don’t you get acclimated to the area and the compound? Settle in a little.”
“Yeah, let me… Let me go do that.” Acclimate to… what, fatherhood? Oh, Jesus… “See you tomorrow.”
There are two symbols on the door that Sigma’s been staring at for the past four and a half minutes.
Two Greek letters, Delta and Phi.
It could be a remembrance sort of thing. Delta means change, right? ‘We must change so what happened to Phi won’t happen again.’ That’s what Sigma’s afraid of. It’s possible that there could have been a Delta in DCOM that died with Phi. Diana and the other Sigma would have wanted to remember both of them so they carved their Greek symbols into their door.
There really aren’t a lot of reasons to carve something into your door, Sigma thinks.
Diana or other Sigma could just really like Greek lettering, that’s always a possibility.
Five minutes, now. Sigma is officially stalling on going inside.
He knows it’s the right door, he took note of the carvings as he was leaving earlier in the day so the sameness of the compound isn’t what’s preventing him from entering. Nor is it the prospect of the tiny children actually being his tiny children — not totally, at least. He’s a few months late to the process, but he’s sure he can learn how to be a father. Feeding and changing babies is kind of like maintenance of hardware and maintenance is integral to engineering. Babies don’t scare Sigma.
Diana, on the other hand.
It’s not that she scares him, per se. It’s the implication, the relationship she must have had with the other Sigma to cause the tiny children to exist in the first place. The expectations she must have for him, now that he’s here, back in his body, after she had a harrowing and bonding experience with the older him.
…But she seemed so earnest earlier, wanting to get to know him, rather than looking at him like he was an invader in the body of someone she loved. Maybe he’s afraid of himself, rather than her expectations. He’s afraid of not being good enough.
Six minutes now. Stop stalling, Sigma.
The doorknob turned — he was surprised that he was surprised, maybe he believed in the bottom of his heart that he is an intruder after all — and the door swung inward, letting Sigma in to close it quietly behind him. He could hear Diana shushing a whimpering twin in the room just past the entryway 1-as he entered.
“I know Delta, I know, but you have to settle down, you don’t want to wake up Phi, do you?”
Oh, well that explains it.
Sigma moves from the door into the apartment proper. Diana is sitting on the couch, facing away from him, but the baby, apparently Delta, sees him immediately and exclaims, waving their pudgy little hand excitedly. This, of course, makes Diana turn her head around to look at you.
“Oh, Sigma,” she says, standing up. Sigma’s arms seem to move on their own, grasping the baby and cradling them in such a way that they’re up by his face, eagerly grabbing onto his ear. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
“It’s a habit I picked up,” he explained, sitting down with her and readjusting Delta. “I had a roommate with a nasty noise sensitivity — closing the door too loudly would hurt him, apparently.”
“Oh, wow.”
“I imagine that forty-five years in isolation would make the other me kinda blind to stuff like that, you seemed kinda shocked that I even could be quiet.”
Diana raises a hand to cover her mouth, but Sigma can see the corners of her lips turning upward.
“Yes, he was a bit of an elephant coming and going, but the twins enjoyed it, loved seeing him come in. He quieted down when it was time to put them to rest, though, he wasn’t completely without discretion.”
“Oh, I didn’t mean to—”
“I know, I know. It’s a bit funny how different the two of you are.”
Forty-five years will do that to a person, he doesn’t say. Instead, he asks about the door.
“Which one of you carved the, uh, the symbols, in the door? They’re the names of the twins?”
“Oh? You saw those?”
“It’s how I can tell the doors apart up here.”
“They are a bit samey, aren’t they? Yes, well, he took the twins to the park that’s nearby to give me a little bit of a break, but I got a bit stir-crazy, and like you said, the doors all look the same up here, so I took a penknife and decorated a little.”
At some point during the conversation, Delta’s little hand fell from Sigma’s ear to his shoulder and, looking down at them, he noted that the baby had fallen asleep. He gestured to them with his chin and Diana gently took hold and stood up, walking to the bedroom, presumably where the crib was.
Sigma followed, body on autopilot. He wanted to ask why Diana didn’t tell him that he was the father of the twins, but he couldn’t formulate the question without sounding accusatory, and the last thing he wanted to do was verbally assault such a kind woman. So when Diana came out of the room and closed the door, Sigma asked the other question on his mind.
“How did they get their names?”
Diana stopped walking, halfway to the kitchen, and seemed to shudder in place. Sigma wanted to move and help her, but she shook her head as if to clear it.
“Delta came second, we wanted his name to match Phi’s, and Sigma wanted to name him after me, so we ended up using the Greek letter D. For Phi…”
She stops again. Sigma takes a step closer, hesitant, and ignores the blaring in his head to ask the question.
“Did something happen to Phi?”
There was a pause, during which Sigma took another faltering half-step before Diana choked out an answer.
“We don’t know — I don’t know. We woke up during the game and she was just — gone. Phi was gone, Akane had escaped, and we were trapped in that facility for-for-”
Her choking picked up and turned into a cry. Sigma’s body moved on its own, gathering her into his arms and stroking her back.
“I gave up on Akane coming back for us,” she sobbed into his chest. “We ran out of food three days before she showed up, I didn’t have anything to feed them with! He was trying, God knows he was trying, but he’s just so pragmatic and everything he was saying was so morbid and-and-”
There were no more questions that night. Only Sigma holding Diana as she released sorrow at least months old.
The park was nice, Sigma supposed. He went the next day to get away from the compound, from Akane and his potential worthlessness, from Diana and the hole he couldn’t quite fill. He wanted to get away from existential crises brought about by circumstances out of his control, from different apocalyptic situations than he was mentally prepared to face.
He wanted to get out from the other Sigma’s shadow. He couldn’t quite manage.
But at least the park was nice.
It was a small, grassy thing, with stone benches surrounding a slide and a swing set. The swings had a small little baby seat, so Sigma could see why it would be a good place to bring the twins.
He didn’t, of course — it would defeat the purpose.
“I’m sorry, but do you mind if I sit here?”
Sigma was snapped out of his thoughts by a face that made his left wrist itch. He shouldn’t be so suspicious — Akane said Brother was dealt with, and any guy could have blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim face.
However, Sigma’s eyes did rove over all of the empty benches around the park, then return to the man with a raised eyebrow.
“Sorry, it’s just, I could really use the company right now, is all. If that’s okay! If it’s not, feel free to—“
“No, it’s fine. Have a seat, I guess.”
They sat in silence for a while, but either because Sigma felt awkward brooding with an audience or because his curiosity overwhelmed him, he simply had to ask.
“Sorry, but why?” The man turned his head with a confused look in his eyes, so Sigma elaborated. “Why didn’t you want to be alone, I mean. I’m sorry if that’s—“
“No, no, you had your day disturbed, the least I can do is tell you why.” He sat back on the bench and looked up at the sky, searching for the right words to say. “I was a caretaker for someone for a number of years, and they died recently.”
“Oh, I’m sorry for your loss.”
“Thank you for your kindness, but, well, it wasn’t as if it was unexpected. The man was well over a hundred. Still, he was a constant. Something expected, right? And now he’s gone. I’m just — having a bit of trouble finding where to go from here. Should I become a caretaker for someone else? Would that be disrespectful? Being alone leaves me with all sorts of questions.”
“I understand that feeling,” Sigma admitted, more to himself than his conversation partner. “Being lost, not knowing the next step. I don’t know if the opinion of a stranger means much, but if you’re a good caretaker, and it certainly sounds like you are, it wouldn’t be disrespectful to find someone new to take care of.”
“See, I would have never gotten that wisdom had I chose to sit alone today. Thank you for that. I know Delta would hate it if I was mourning him for too long.”
“Delta, huh?” That was the name of one of the twins, right? Sigma’s… son. “That’s a good name.”
“It is. A symbol for change and adaptability.” The man stood and turned to leave. “I hope whatever situation you’re stuck in changes for the better.”
“Thank you…”
He walked off, leaving Sigma sitting on the bench for a moment before deciding to leave as well.
Diana mentioned that she was going out with the twins and gave Sigma a key for the door, so he was unsurprised to see that the apartment was empty.
But there was a laptop on the coffee table, with a note taped to the top.
‘This is the laptop that Sigma was using to work. No password to get in, not sure why. There are also some notebooks and stuff down in his workstation if you need them. —Akane’
No password? Well, if it was supposed to be a work laptop with the intention of saving the world from an apocalypse then it makes a bit of sense to keep it open…
It almost rings true, but Sigma doesn’t think that’s all there is to it.
Oh well, at least this way he doesn’t have to solve some kind of puzzle to get working. Sigma opened the laptop to a file directory.
In the directory were all sorts of blueprint files and coding files and other things that made Sigma’s eyes swim. But there was also a text file titled ‘Checklist,’ which Sigma could easily relate to — he started every project with a task list, and it seemed that didn’t change as he got older. So he opened the list.
ai code—c housing blueprint—c model blueprint—ipr ABT—c mat list—c housing—ipr model—nst
He even used the same code for the list — complete, in progress, and not started. And it seems like everything that needed forty-five years of experience was already done! Sigma wouldn’t have been able to code an artificial intelligence or develop biological tissue, but he could finish a blueprint for a robot and then put it together!
Was that the natural progression of work, or did the other Sigma prepare in case the Shift did happen? Either way, this Sigma was grateful as hell!
The door opened, and he turned his head to see Diana walking in with the twins in a carrier.
“Oh, hello Sigma.”
“Diana! I…”
He could have said any number of things then.
He’s able and willing to help Akane. He’ll try to be a stellar father for Delta and Phi. He knows he isn’t the other Sigma and he can never truly fill those shoes but he’s going to try his best.
But in the end, he could only say,
“I’m looking forward to getting to know you.”

(On anon because sideblog) I just think chalking up them both as orphans and therefore on the same situation a bit of a jump? Eric and Chris had a direct abuser that ended up being the death of one of them while Aoi and Akane were pretty much abandoned and were easy targets for outside violence because of that, I also think that it's a pretty stark contrast how Aoi must resent the system greatly for many reasons while Eric still wants to be or even just appear the most well adjusted regular guy possible, even without Akane's psychic powers how could he not be after something like the nonary game gets covered up. I think a narrative about the cycle of abuse is different than one about the cycle of violence essentially even if morally they're probably? pretty close there is still a difference there especially in the way it is presented to us, I'm sorry but Aoi and Akane at least don't put bombs on anyone that's innocent while Eric grenade launches a child
Definitely a fair point. I know I probably didn't express myself as well as I could have in that post - I didn't mean to say their situations are the same, merely that there are some parallels to observe between them. I also wanted to include a little bit of a counterpoint section acknowledging the inherent differences between their situations, but the post was long enough as it was. But basically, yeah, Eric was always going to be messed up no matter what happened to him, because his parents just weren't good to him; even before his mother died, she was teaching him how to bottle in his emotions. The Kurashikis, meanwhile aren't indicated to have been anything but good, normal parents (though, I mean, their mother must have had issues of her own, if she took her own life the way she did - but it's not really addressed how that impacted them). I'm still sure Eric and Chris being espers could have helped them in some way, but do I think they'd ever be capable of what Aoi and Akane do? Not really.
A direct comparison can't be made, but generally what I was getting at is that, whether you watch your sibling be killed by a parent or by a greedy businessman, under normal circumstances, do you think either of those is going to have a positive impact on the trajectory of your life? And yet Aoi was able to make something of himself. Obviously, Aoi and Akane being kidnapped was contingent on them having powers, but imagine if their powers were just a little weaker - if Akane wasn't the most powerful esper in the world and Aoi's abilities all but vanished when she died. He would have that same hatred of the system, but what would he be able to do about it? Anything he tries to say would get him laughed off as a conspiracy theorist. Where would he find the currency, monetary or social, to make any impact? He might feel powerless and frustrated too and lash out in smaller ways like Eric does.
It's all what-ifs, I know. But as far as what-ifs go, I think it's pretty interesting and enlightening. Thank you for the ask, I enjoy discussing these things.
(Also I promise promise promise none of this or the last post were intended as hate towards anyone, yes I can get bitter about my faves not being as popular as others but I adore literally every Zero Escape character it's why I love it so much)

Okay, how would you describe Akane's relationship with Aoi? We don't get to see them interact with their true personalities. Also, how would you compare that relationship to her relationship with Junpei? And maybe even Carlos if you want to throw him in there.
HOPE YOU DON’T MIND ME THROWING IN SIGMA TOO i can’t just hit THREE of akane’s boys i need the whole squad. and i’m gonna try to keep this short because fuck, i could ramble SO hard about this topic
akane with aoi
SO. they care INTENSELY about one another. they’d kill and die for each other. depdendence, codependence, whatever, it doesn’t matter, you get my drift-- they’re closer than close, their morphic resonance means they share thoughts and feelings even without realizing it, they’re so perceptive of each other and feel like each other’s other half
they look out for each other! all the time! as a kid aoi strives to hide their poverty from her because he wants her to think Everything’s Okay and wants nothing but happiness for her, he doesn’t want to expose her to this shitty cruel world. but even before the fng she’s a perceptive kid, she knows things, but she doesn’t want him to worry either...
relatedly, akane never makes it an expectation for aoi to help her with the nonary game-- she knows he probably would jump at the chance to save her life, but she doesn’t want to retraumatize him or put this burden on him. meanwhile, for aoi? it’s never been an option to refuse. he wouldn’t be aoi if he let her die like that. all of their lives have been squarely focused around the other-- they’re equals and opposites, other halves, their personalities are so different but their origins are the same and the only constant in their lives is each other. they’d tell anything to each other. they trust each other completely and fully. they’re an efficient team and work so well together and support one another through the toughest shit imaginable... i love them so much...
akane with junpei
as for these two... they grew up as weird kids, social rejects. not in some extreme sense of the word, but akane’s a little girl into the occult and creepy shit and obscure facts and junpei’s someone who’s ready to go with the flow on that kind of thing but doesn’t have a lot of friends himself-- they work well together. junpei thrives around kind people, and akane is kind and he likes her and she likes him. it’s a simple friendship but it’s why it’s a strong one
to akane, junpei represents home and safety, in a way. it’s not like romantic love is her end goal, but it’s always impossible for her to be with him unless she’s achieved her goals first; as such, he does symbolize that success and peace. whenever she has to pursue other paths in order to save the world she’s also avoiding him; she can’t have him in vlr because it’s not safe yet, but in ztd, she’s able to be with him because everything is going to be taken care of finally
junpei’s akane deal is also complicated... much like the kurashikis, junpei and akane share a resonant bond-- it probably contributed to how close they got as kids, and how devastating it was to junpei to have that connection severed after 999 even though he never knew what he was missing. junpei’s idealistic and post-999 thought that everything would be okay if he could just find her-- that they could settle down, talk it out, everything would be fine. he sees it as a love story rather than reality. so when it’s not that easy, when he realizes she may have been using him, when he realizes she doesn’t want to be found, it hits him more than it should. but he’s already in so deep, and he still wants to find her and wants an explanation and to PROVE something to her but he doesn’t know what, so he continues but he’s bitter!
and... well, i don’t entirely agree with how they got together in ztd. these kids need to slow the fuck down. but i think that their companionship would be a positive thing if they would talk things out first
akane with sigma
MMM GOOD DYNAMIC HERE. the two zeros!
so! akane got sigma into this whole mess. she initiated it, got him on this ridiculous fucked up ride without him ever asking for it. akane’s been through this herself-- though at a lesser scale-- and is now expecting sigma to live up to these huge expectations after dropping them on him with barely any warning. and sigma’s not the type to refuse this duty-- he almost immediately accepts his fate of saving the world and embraces it, but in some ways he doesn’t know what he’s getting into. but akane does
akane and sigma both know what it’s like to give up their morals, their lives, their futures for a greater cause-- they know what it’s like to lose people you love for it, to see death, to cause death by your own actions. it’s this small quiet understanding of what they’re going through is something no one else in the world will understand. sigma never blames akane for getting him caught in this but i can see them indulging in each other; they’re both isolated and deprived of companionship and even being friends with each other for a short while feels necessary
that’s in the vlr timeline, of course. in the ztd timeline... it’s not vlr akane. she knows of the future, but that’s it... it’s the experience of living thorugh it with sigma that caused them to be close in the vlr timeline, so post-ztd, while i still like to imagine they have a connection, it may not have the same depth caused by necessity
akane with carlos
okay this is kind of a hard one but (rubs hands together)
it’s really nice in the context of C team as a whole because they balance each other out nicely. carlos and akane both know what it’s like to lose parents at a young age, and they both have their sibling issues-- carlos does play a bit more of an aoi role, but because akane took a more active role in reclaiming her future, carlos mirrors her as well. they’ve just... had tough childhoods, they both suppress their emotions to some extent
and hey-- FIRE. FIRE!!! it’s such cool symbolism! akane died by fire, carlos is a firefighter-- carlos’ family died in a fire, he dedicated his life to fighting fires. akane herself died in a fire, so she dedicated her life to saving herself. they’ve both witnessed horrible destruction and done their best to counteract it
hm.... more practically, akane’s a bit more experienced in life than carlos despite being younger by like, 6 years. carlos has accepted a simple role in life-- all he wants to do is save people and make enough money to keep his sister afloat from her medical things. akane, in contrast, is strikingly complex (pardon the ‘complex motives’). their goals in life are very different, but together imo they could balance each other out-- carlos learns that he can aspire to do more with his life (through akane paying for maria’s medical bills and also helping to revive maria) and akane learns that she can... settle down. calm down. just live for herself if she’d like to. that’s all she needs
... ugh i really like akane and her boys. akane loves her boys. all of them. i love them
