Who is your favourite driver?

Gewis Hamussel. I love Lewis and George equally and I’ve stood by this for 3 years and I won’t stop now. If I’m forced to pick one for a form I’ll pick Lewis because I loved him first and longer, but otherwise I refuse to choose.

Do you have other favourite drivers?

I will die for Mercedes Reserve/Junior Frederik Vesti. He’s just such a great little dude, cheerful, calm, confident, I LIKE this small (tall) man. Doesn’t hurt he’s a fantastic driver.

Doriane Pin is also a new favourite. Go go pocket rocket!

I also have a confessed love for Jack Doohan, he’s very gender. I suffer a fondness for Yuki, Zhou and sometimes Esteban and Oscar. I also am quite fond of the McLaren and Penske FE drivers (a deep hate for mclaren makes this very conflicting. I am aware.)

Who is your least favourite driver?

Oooof, now it’s easier to list drivers I like than drivers I hate cause it’s a long list, but the crown really has to go to Max Verstappen, with a supporting role for Fernando Alonso. Most drivers I don’t like fall into one of two characters - shitty on track, and shitty off track. For example, I don’t really have a good reason to beef with Roman Stanek as far as I know, but he fucked my f2 drivers enough on track he is now my mortal enemy. On the other side, Lando Norris is a perfectly serviceable driver. But he’s also a cunt. So fuck him. Most driver fall into both on some level, or confirmation bias reinforces it, but Max and Fernando embody both and I could probably give a TED talk about why they damage the sport for the future. Also they’re *deeply* racist. So fuck them.

Do you root for drivers of do you root for teams as well?

Drivers. I’ll root for the team in the case that constructors points will mean good things for my drivers, but I hate the idea of being a corporate fan. Businesses aren’t your friends. I’ll often use merc as a catch all, because both its drivers are my favourites, so it’s easier to speak about the team as a whole. But if both boys left and they dropped Fred and Dori, I’d drop merc like a hot rock.

If you like teams, who do you root for?

I WILL admit a fondness for certain Mercedes engineers like Bono, Shov, James, etc. The love and passion shown in the debriefs and BTS videos- but I don’t really count that as supporting the team so much as the players? It’s complicated, I just think Toto Wolff and Merc upper management fucking suck. Call that what you will. I like James Vowles and the roll he’s been taking at Williams is impressive, but I can’t really say I support Williams when I’m neutral on the drivers. I’ll generally warn against supporting bosses because it’ll always bite you… but I’m a hypocrite and James come back to Merc pls.

How long have you been into F1?

This will be my fifth season watching now. My first race was Austria 2020

What got you into F1?

My dad has been a life long f1 fan, from the 70’s to now, so I grew up with it always being around, but it wasn’t until I was back home from uni during the pandemic that I sat down to watch with him, because he was finally willing to explain it to me. I also came across f1 memes on Reddit and it got me hooked. I didn’t join F1blr until 22 though, when I discovered rpf content organically.

I’ve been a hamilton fan from day one, he’s a sort of home town hero, and I remember being in the room and my dad’s cheering when he won the first championship. Runs in the family

Do you enjoy fanfic/RPF?

Be fuckin wild if I didn’t, considering I write it lmao.

How do you view new fans?

I say this as the strongest compliment I can— I have no fuckin idea how you guys survive being here given the shit show of the last couple years- but I’m always excited to welcome new people to the Gewis side of things.

I also end up frequently as the guy going “how can you support x given their shitty history ” only to learn someone is like a couple months in and understandably has no idea about that yet, leading to an accidental crash course on the current grids fuck ups. I’m very sorry to those people, it will happen again.

Are your friends and family into f1 as well?

Here and there, my dad is probably the most passionate of them and its my favourite when we can watch together but my mom will ask what’s going on, and my larger family are fans but in the very… het sense of it. We would struggle to watch together. As for friends, my poor long suffering partner let me drag her into it (go follow @thatsmemate ), and most of my friends are from f1blr, so of course they are.

Some of my old ex stevetony friends I still keep touch with don’t watch, but ask me every now and then what’s been going on in the f1 world, because they are deeply sweet.

Are you open to talking to other fans/making friends?

Always. Always, always, always. I am generally a nervous guy in new places and conversations, but once settled I’ll chat your ear off.

I do often need other people to reach out to me first, I can’t often tell when someone wants to speak, so I wait for them to speak first, and when chatting I get forgetful and can struggle to remember to reply when busy. Some people find that a turn off, and that’s fair enough.

What I’m saying is if I don’t reach out first or reply slow. Don’t assume I hate you, I just struggle to juggle all my tasks these days. Disability is a bitch.

Yep Bryce Lawrence! Everyone’s favourite guy /j 😂, the only guy to meet Seb’s level in bloodthirsty-ness lol. I can’t reveal their story just yet! I want to get Sebastian’s death post ready before I move on the the different Arcs. But this takes place post Love arrow incident, they meet at a cafe while Tav and Seb were on a stake-out.

Lyria belongs to @whatrambles . Glad you noticed that cuz it’s true! Seb had an attachment to her, but it was not love, it was merely to taunt his sibling Lisel (OC of @theevanparker ) who was hopelessly in love with Lyria. So Seb made sure that Lyria was always happy around him to make his sibling jealous. Like I’ve said before, Seb needs entertainment, and seeing Lisel so love-sick was just enough for him. So that explains the attachment, she was just a source of entertainment for him, but genuinely she was pretty fun to be around. And when he escaped CHB he immediately dumped her and told Lisel to take care of her.

Only about 127 Romans and only 1 Greek in total. I mean those guys aren’t that easy to handle and there are like 300 total demigods in CJ. They were quite frequent before the love arrow, so that’s why Reyna thought that way, After love arrow, the murders were decreasing cuz Sebastian was on haitus lmao. Most of the murders took place outside the Camp, during quests or Seb literally going over to their homes. And often he’d order them kill one another if he managed to trap someone with his “charm”…makes things easier.

i will just talk about some of my favourite gods maybe, and maybe the limbo system? i dont want to spoil the myths in case i ever get around to writing them but!!

so they all have titles!! lets start with quackity, the lord of fortune. he's had the title for so long and it's been translated so many times that no one is quite sure if it's meant to be fortune as in luck or fortune as in riches (though some might argue those are the same thing). quackity's job is to decide who deserves fortune and give it away to those who do, while taking it away from those who dont. yes its very inspired by him owning a casino and las nevadas in general and luck yeah yeah. anyways he decides who is worthy of fortune by shapeshifting (bc he can do that :D) and testing people without them knowing he's a god (like juno in roman mythology, testing heroes). and of course, being quackity, he gets into . a shit ton of mischief with his shapeshifting abilities lmao.

then!! tubbo is the most developed (very characteristic for something ive done LMAO). hes the guide of the lost, meaning people pray to him for guidance! hes the god/protector of those in tricky, two-sided situations and high stakes. also, though most people forget it, he's the god of necessary lies and unneccesary truths. what else OH!!! he fuckin hates his title. he tries to get people to call him cursed things (THE CENSORSHIP SOUND?? CAN I MAKE A BEEP REFERENCE???) anyways his duty is to answer prayers from people praying to him, and also help judge the souls of the dead to decide their limbos! however, he's only called in to help with the really morally grey cases (and there is a story behind why, however i won't get into it unless i get another ask LMAO). he and tommy trade duties for fun sometimes and sometimes tubbo forces ranboo to do his because he's a little shit like that </3 OH ALSO HE CAN SENSE LIES!! (and by extension truths LOL)

wilbur is the herald of change but if i explained his whole story it would take literally forever because its complicated as hell </3

same with ranboo except he doesnt even have a proper title hes ranboo the mysterious because no one knows shit about him... he wasnt even in the original myths and hes relatively new to the pantheon (he started out as a mortal and theres a whole myth about how he became a god) and i had an idea for what he does but i dont remember DAMNIT. but he got to choose what he'd be the god of unlike everyone else. however the mortals never gave him a cool title L sorry ranboo ily but. it just didnt work </3 now you can be mysterious though :D

oh also george sleeps through literally everything except the wilbur story and is BRIEFLY awoken for ranboos. his power is to thanos snap people

My spirit guides

In this part I will explain a little my family history, because my guides are my grandfather and my great grandmother (my grandma's mother).

Let's start from my grandpa. He died when I was nine years old and when he was alive, I was his light. We couldn't really do much together because he was stuck on his bed and he was hating that, but he gave me all his support and love anyways. He used to tell me a lot of Greek and Roman myths because he loved them so much, he explained to me some basic science facts and how to use a boat. I used to crawl on his bed with a lot of collectible boats to play with him. He had a bag full of those and he was always saying:"when I won't be there anymore, they are yours, so you will have something that will always remind you of me".

My uncle stole those boats for his son, who doesn't even like them. I'm still mad. Anyway when he died, I wasn't actually able to say hi to him because obviously my parents didn't take me to the hospital when he was about to leave, so I started my own way to cope with his death. In elementary school I used to sit alone, with one chair free on my right side for him and one free on my left side for Loki.

After some time I started to feel his presence back but I thought it was just me making up everything. I was feeling his hand on my cheeks, I was smelling tobacco and his favourite whiskey and this actually made me suffer a lot, because I thought it was all my head.

At a certain point tho I got tired and wanted to understand if I was imagining everything so, going against everything Hades has ever told me, I tried to evoke him or whatever I tried to do, I still don't know lmao. Anyway thank gods the ritual didn't work but he was already here so I managed to have a quick conversation using my pendulum and a candle. After that and after Hades yelling at me basically I went to my bf's mum to know how bad I messed up but hey, nothing happened and it turned out it was really my grandpa. Now we do a meditation together at least once every week and gods I'm so grateful that I can spend more time with him.

My great grandma now. I never got to meet her, she died when my mum was little and my grandma never really talked about her, she doesn't have pictures of her hanging on the walls or anything like that. I hust knew that she had a mum which was a fricking strong woman, but I didn't even know her name. One day I started to see this woman around my house, but just like little flashes of her walking, and after those flashes the candles used to go crazy (not the dieties candle, normal tea candles because I love the smell). It was pretty sus.

One day I went to my grandma and I was like "nana I'm old enough, just tell me something about your family". She took out a family photobook and boom, the woman I was seeing around my house, her mother.

I decided to meditate with her to understand something more: she was chosen by Hekate and Hades when she was young and she was a medium, but couldn't never practice openly (we're around the year 1910 so yeah, the Catholic Church in Italy was still way too controlling). Hekate told her everything she had to know so even if she wasn't able to read, she knew a lot of things. She tried to teach to her daughters, who were more at home, too but she understood soon that it was too dangerous for them (even tho all of them have some witchy vibes) , so she asked Hades and Hekate to watch over our family's women. They have been with her basically all her life, then with my grandma and my mum, now with me. That's why I call them "guardians", because for some reasons they decided to watch over us.

Again, I had to have a double check because I don't really trust myself about family things.

How I honor them

For now I don't interact much with them cause I'm really busy and not completely ready yet, especially with my grandpa considering how much emotional I still get. What I do to honor them is being loyal to my family, trying my best to help all the members when I can, digging into my roots and learning where my family is from. I try to be the woman I should be (when I actually feel like a woman, I'm genderfluid so yeah. Usually by this I mean "when I feel connected to my feminine part") and to be strong when I want to leave everything, because this is what they did and this is what got them where they were.

Then I have an altar for them with all the other spirits, where they have water and some offerings: personal belongings, something that they liked when they were alive and so forth.

What they want from me

As I said I'm not doing any type of ancestors work or spirit work and I never even started, but I talked with them about what we should do together. For now, they are guides, this means that when I need, I just have to call for them and asking for their advice and try to figure out what I need to do together: I did that for dieties reaching out to me, for personal problems and even relationship advices (both with gods and humans). They are always more than happy to help me and to give advices; sometimes they also get angry because I talk with the Gods and what I need is an human perspective on the topic.

the line is from what we deserve!! it's a soulmate au where your timer counts down to the moment that you meet your soulmate!! bakugou's timer ends at USJ when he and kirishima attack kurogiri at the same time (impulsive kings <33) but kirishima's timer doesn't end until kamino because that's when he accepts himself as bakugous soulmate!! unfortunately, when bakugous timer has reached 0, he turned to see that kirishima's was still ticking and therefore believes that kirishima isn't his soulmate.

this line just,, idk. it's really sad. bakugou is such an action-driven character? if something doesn't go his way he Makes it go his way. he's got this insanely volatile quirk and he's got impeccable control of it!! but his love for kirishima isn't something that he can change and he's not going to ruin kirishima's chance of finding his own soulmate because he loves him and wants him to be happy. i really wanted to focus on how resigned he is? and how unusual that is for a character like him.

CONCEPTUALIZATION

How do you conceptualize your ideas? (See specific moments like they're a movie, writing specific lines in your head, don't know until you put the words on paper, etc.) i tend to get inspiration from movies, books, poems, or other fics!!! sometimes one line just makes me go oh,, i want to write something like that,,, and then it helps me create an idea that makes me feel the same way?? i did this with control fraek!!!! i wanted a scenario where bakugou was cold and calculating and i was like hm. to do that he’d have to be focusing on something important. and from there i was able to flesh out the rest of the idea.

Which comes first: the pairing or the plot? with krbk its always always the pairing,, i'll be sitting there like wow <33 i love them <33 what if one of them had amnesia <33 (which, yes, wip!!) otherwise it's usually the plot!! and i slot in characters that i feel make sense

Have you ever used a prompt? yeah!! used a prompt for wlw week 2020 and it was fun as hell

Do you write around the story around a specific scene you want to get to or do you start from a plot idea definitely the first!!!! i almost always write like,,, a super messy scene thats 90% dialogue, keep it in my head, and then write the entire fic around that one moment

Do you find that you include a projection of some part of yourself in the way you write a character? a lot of the time when i write love confessions or love in general i'll have one of the characters think or say that the other person makes their head quiet? and it's because that's what i feel whenever i'm in love?? a quiet mind. i project on characters yeah but i think most of the projection actually goes to the way that i write love

Do you research some of the things you write deeply, partially and kind of wing the rest, or play entirely by ear (in this case, go with whatever base knowledge of the subject you have)? most of the time if i do research it'll be about the setting (ex. the izakaya in to have and to hold) or if i'm having the characters interact with an object that they like. need to know how to use (me, in control fraek: google. hey google. does someone die if they get shot in the foot??? no???? awesome thank u <3)

Have you ever had an idea for a story and forgot about it? lmaoo yeah all the time i'll find like 500-2k words of concepts in my gdocs like i do. not remember this at all

How do you come up with titles? in rare occasions (literally. all my multichaps for some reason) the title comes after writing like .5 words of the first chapter im like YES this is it!!!!! sometimes i write the whole thing and pick out one line that fits (what i did with come home to me) a lot of the time i just. steal from songs or poems that i like

What's your favorite emotion to cause on your readers? i like making people happy!!!! love when people comment saying they're cheered up

Do you set word goals or scene goals (scenes you want to include)? yes!! like i said i'll write loose notes for scenes that i want to add later!! it gives me something to write towards :D

What do you consider when writing your scenes? what goes into making the atmosphere and mood you want? to set a scene i do two things? the first is like,, the five senses bc that always sets the scene really well and makes it feel Real. i'll visualize stuff in my head like its a movie and write out what i would want to tell the set designer?? if the lights are low, if the space is busy, if it's supposed to exude comfort or not.

for putting forward the character's mood one thing i've found that makes a difference is sentence length!! long sentences are good for making a character seem flustered and nervous or not really in control of their emotions? good for love confessions. short sentences are good for when the character is focused on something or short on time. good for fights!!

What's something you never considered to include in your writing that you can't leave out now? def buff hagakure,,,, once i thought of it i was like. if i don't include this at least once in every single fic how could i look at myself in the mirror!!!!!! how could i face anyone!!!!

How do you start a story? establishing a fact about the character or describing the setting! option a is one single thread of gold, option b is between lion and men

How do you end a story? either by tying it back to the beginning or doing like a funny kind of closing??? option a is sugar cookies, option b is a godless society

How do you get out of writer's block? change something!! move something!! i go from typing to handwriting, moving from my bedroom to my living room, switching wips to work on something else!! i do sprints as well?? give myself like fifteen minutes to write something and sometimes 200 words opens up the way for another 2k. sometimes i'll just delete like 500 words and start fresh

Do you edit? or do you toss your writing out there? i edit!!! i'll go over it myself then send it to one or two betas (bee my beloved <33)

How do you edit? do you use spellcheck, grammar checkers, etc? bee is my grammar checker bc he is So Good with grammar. i use grammarly as well for spellcheck stuff mostly?? sometimes my edit process is just like "am i tired of looking at this!! yes <3" and then i post it

Do you usually like what you write? yeah!!! i post stuff that makes me happy and that i'm fine with rereading!!! i write stuff for self-indulgence reasons first and foremost and i think my writing reflects that sjhnksj

Can you tell us anything about your current WIP? sure!! i'm currently working on when it rains which is a fic where bakugou gets hit by a crying quirk!! i'm gonna be using it to explore So Much of all might's character and his relationships with bakugou and aizawa (and i think some people from his past!!)

Can you give us a sneak peek on your current WIP? “You did something. What the hell did you do?” Kirishima sounds pissed off. It would amuse Katsuki if he wasn’t fighting just to stay standing.

“Nothing he didn’t ask for,” Shinsou replies.

“K’ri… shima,” Katsuki croaks out. “‘S fine. Not him.”

His chest collapses back into the familiar dry heaving after that but Kirishima shuts up. He doesn’t apologize to Shinsou.

Kirishima’s a good friend, stubborn and loyal. He stands by Katsuki’s side like an attack dog, blocking him from the view of anyone ogling at his tears.

The last line you've written Ochako knows more than she'd realized. She knows enough to keep her guard up.

What's your favorite thing about writing? touched on this before but it's mainly just being able to write the things that i want to see and actually enjoy them!!! actually reread them!!!! i thought "wouldn't it be cool if bkg and kirishima owned a restaurant together" and then i wrote it and i like it enough to reread it!!!! being able to create content for myself makes me. so happy

How do you keep yourself inspired? this is gonna sound narcissistic maybe but honestly i'm just really excited about my ideas and where i'm gonna take them and the idea of "i'm gonna get to That scene" keeps me going through the entire thing. also my friends!!!! i'll talk to them about fics and their reactions keep me hyped up enough to finish!!!!

One way you've improved your writing since you began? characterization!! i think i've gotten better at writing characters that are all Different and bring different things to the table!!! i used to project a lot more and it would compromise the characterization because the character was like 70% me and 30% them? not to say that projection is bad but if you do it too much it just,, doesn't read like the character and from a reader's standpoint the narrative can become less compelling

One aspect of writing you're still working on? writing action!!! i. literally hate writing it but i write for a fandom about superheroes so. Unfortunately i gotta learn.

A piece of writing advice you've learned while writing saw this on another tumblr post but they said sometimes if you're struggling with a scene, the problem is five lines back. i've found that to be true!!!! sometimes u gotta delete a chunk and start a little ways back!! i did this with too busy being yours because i was stuck for Weeks and i deleted like 25% of what i had but it helped me actually finish it :D

Something you wish you knew when you first started writing? ,,,,honestly i kind of wish i could know some of the stuff that i used to when i first started writing?? technically i'm better now but creatively i was must better when i wasn't stressing about whether anyone would like what i was writing. so i guess i wish i knew that i should keep that confidence? i kinda wish that i wasn't as insecure about other people's writing styles because i never used to be!!

Something you've learned in life that you apply in writing there's no point in feeling inferior?? writing one genre isn't better than the other. being in one fandom isn't better than being in another. the kind of language you use or the length of your paragraphs- none of that stuff like. matters. what matters is that you're having fun and happy with what you're creating!!!! enjoy other peoples writing but don't let it make you feel worse about yours :D

could u elaborate what was so bad about the barbarians? i saw the show and thought it was ok but i don't have enough knowledge to know what are the ideological implications of it? sorry, just really curious and wanna learn more

*takes a deep breath* oh boy, where to even begin? Thanks for your question as I might finally get this off my chest! Okay, fair’s fair, anyone who likes the show should look away now because I’m not going to mince words. And I want to reiterate that there were things about the show that I liked, mostly on a superficial aesthetical level. Generally you could tell from the get-go though that the writers are hacks who know nothing about history or good storytelling for that matter. I could’ve dealt with a show that was historically inaccurate if only the character drama had been written well. I might also have enjoyed the show more if the character drama had been mediocre but if there had been a sense of historical authenticity (not accuracy, mind; but still something tangibly more substantial than the patina they tried to throw onto their frankly embarrassingly lowbrow attempt by having parts of the dialogue translated into Latin by an expert and by hiring a good crew for the costume and props design - of the Romans at least... putting lipstick on a pig and all that, although pigs are great and the writing here is not).

Since you asked about the ideological implications specifically, I’ll start with that and work my way towards other criticisms (this is going to be LONG):

19th century nationalism: The story of Arminius and his merry band of brothers who defy the big bad Roman empire is a narrative that became especially popular in Germany in the 18th and 19th century, both with liberal patriotic movements that were advocating for the unification of the “German cultural nation” in a modern nation state (spurred by the Wars of Liberation against Napoléon Bonaparte and French occupation) and later with the völkisch movements where that nationalism segued into the pseudo-scientific racial ‘theories’ of a ‘superior German race’ which in turn was part of the ideological foundation of the genocides and atrocities committed by Germany in the 20th century (not only in WWII, see also the colonial genocide of the Herero in 1904). We cannot disentangle this predominantly racist reception history that re-invented Arminius (”Hermann der Cherusker” - “Hermann the Cheruscan” - or, indeed “Hermann the German” ha!) as the founding myth of a German people from the way this story has been depicted in media, entertainment and culture and, as evidenced by Barbarians, continues to be to this day.

Barbarians pays lip service to the fact that actually there was no German people at the time by having the tribes meet at the Ting in the first episode and have someone outright state it. These kinds of tidbits literally voiced by characters give off a strong whiff of the authors googling something, reading something on Wikipedia, and then putting it in there. I’m sorry (actually not sorry) to come down harsh on this but given what we’re talking about here, that’s just not good enough. It’s an embarrassing level of “writing”. The authors clearly have NO idea what they’re talking about or what they’re dealing with because despite their lip services, they actively reproduce the harmful narratives that were spun around this actual historical event and these actual historical figures in the 19th century. No effort was made to depict anything complex or realistic here. Case in point: Even though there’s a pretense that the tribes aren’t part of the same people, they don’t look much different from each other, they all speak the same kind of modern high German that sounds like they’re at a costume party in the year of our lord 2020 (and in the case of Folkwin, drugged out of their mind; he sounds like a guy who’d throw beer cans at passersby). They come across as basically just being separated by the few acres between their villages. And then when the big bad evil Roman empire wants to squash their resistance (Asterix did it better change my mind challenge), freedom fighter Arminius rallies them together with a heroic speech and they charge at the Romans RAAHWWHR! ... no, just no.

There would have been SO MANY ways to reframe and retell this story in a fresh, new, and exciting way that would have made for amazing character drama. The premise is so good. If we were to look at the basics of what is known, there are so many personal AND political complexities in there that just beg to be coloured in with a little imagination. I just... I don’t even know where to begin to fix the choices that the show did go with since most of them don’t make any sense, don’t contribute anything to the narrative and are just. there. Have y’all noticed that there is ZERO dramatic tension in any of the scenes? Like, what? How?? Culture clash, divided loyalties, identity issues, the way that a militaristic upbringing might warp the mind, feelings of home and belonging and displacement, the return of the lost son, the betrayal of a high-ranking officer, just, there are so many themes that the show could have focused on but it botches all of them, nothing of it feels real, earned, or logical. Characters behave in idiotic ways for the sake of the plot (I wanted to like Thusnelda, I really did, I’m always here for female characters but she was so painfully obviously written by 3 dudes who thought that feminism = praying to the good sisters of the forest and slashing your face aöldksfaökdjf plus the actress could not sell any of it, she sounded ridic).

I’m exhausted just thinking about the many ways in which the writing on the show sucked. Impaired character used as a symbol~ for other characters instead of being a character on his own? Check. Weird mystical shit? Check. Earthbound tribal people who are one with nature? Check. Death on the cross to get that Christian imagery in there? Check. Lack of female characters except feisty!badass!Thusnelda, scheming!conniving!pulling-the-strings!wife, weird!mystical!seer? Check. Varus doing a Herod by demanding first-borns to up the Christian persecuted ante? Check. (All he was missing was the mustache to twirl. Was he even a character? He looked vaguely concerned and sceptical. That was his character.)

Look, the actor Arminius was great but even he couldn’t make sense of any of it. The character work was so shoddy, it was shocking. One minute he’s still all-in with the Romans, ordering lashes for “German” mercenaries without being very conflicted about it, reminiscing with fellow Roman soldiers about the good old times in some fireside bonding, asking his foster father to go home to Rome, and then when bad!dad is like “lol no” (surely they would have had that convo before??? surely Arminius would have known how far his career could go???), Arminius turns around and goes “let’s kill 3 Roman legions!! I’M MAD!!” ... lmao dude, just...

Another favourite of mine: The romance between Thusnelda and Folkwin is supposed to be illicit and against her social status. Does anyone even notice? Does anybody even care? Why did the writers come up with Folkwin in the first place? (His name Folkwin Wolfspeer is a hoot and an embarassment in itself. I wonder whether they used some kind of Germanic name generator. They certainly did use a generic speech generator for the battle speech Arminius gives in the last episode lol)

Back to the topic of a lack of tension. Of course there can’t be any tension if the characters suck. But it’s also because of the design of the scenes and plot points. The cliffhangers are so telegraphed and artificially constructed, it’s almost hilarious. My “favourite” has got to be the one of the first episode: The “hi dad” one. Not only does Arminius go to the village with other Romans in tow who then disappear because nothing in this show makes sense but this kind of revelation also goes against everything we know about good storytelling. There’s a famous quote by Hitchcock and I’ll quote it in full because I think it absolutely applies here (and it is valid for character tension as much as it is for suspense):

There is a distinct difference between "suspense" and "surprise," and yet many pictures continually confuse the two. I'll explain what I mean.

We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let's suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!"

In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story.

I hope you can see what I mean here. Barbarians continuously springs surprises on its audience but it has absolutely no tension/suspense in any of its scenes. The only time where the show even comes close to having any kind of genuinely dramatic moment is the conversation between Arminius and Varus where Arminius tries to hide his hurt and disappointment, and all the emotion in that scene is completely due to the actor since the dialogue is fairly idiotic for what is supposed to be the turning moment. Let’s go back to the basics and imagine what the show could have done differently, even allowing for the way in which the writers wanted to tell it (which, as I mentioned, is not appropriately sensitized to the misappropriation of the material in the past - but even if we go with THAT kind of freedom fighter / lost child narrative, it ought to be done well). And here now follows my actual essay of grievances:

The premise of the story, in as much as we know from history, is amazing: An officer of the Roman army, delivered to the Romans by his tribe as a child, returns to the "country" of his birth as part of the invading Roman army which oppresses the natives of the lands. He switches sides, unites different tribes and leads them to a decisive victory against the Roman army in a battle in a forest that lasted for several days and was cleverly planned by the "Germans" who end up outsmarting the Romans who are victims of ambush and the terrain, being split up and stumbling through the forest exhausted and without finding a way back to the other troops (love that the show as we have it managed to squeeze in the cliché "two armies standing on opposing sides decide to just start running towards each other, epic clash, chaos" (which is militarily so fucking stupid and nobody ever did that)).

Anyway, that premise is amazing. You could do so much with it. And if you wanted to make a miniseries about it, the biggest question would surely be: Why did Arminius switch sides? That’s the key plot point. And themes of otherness, oppression, exploitation, identity, and so on, would be a good fit. The first problem with the miniseries is that it has nothing to say about any of that. Arminius doesn’t even feel like the main character (aside from his actor being a cut above the rest). We don’t get to see much of his POV. We don’t get many meaningful conversations between him and Varus (actually just one after which he has a total character transplant). Instead, we get to spend lots of time with characters that don’t add anything in particular to the central plot nor to any of the central themes. Literally, why? 6 episodes is already pretty fucking short to make Arminius’ turn believable, so you’d better spend most of them on him. This is not material for an ensemble show (nevermind that the other characters suck and are not well-acted and written to behave stupidly... that’s just ON TOP of the fundamental issue of this show lacking a POV).

Like, you can turn this into a big Hollywood action movie about the battle or you make it a character drama where the battle is also told from a character perspective (i.e. focusing on the mounting fear and desperation of the soldiers as the battle drags on for days etc but more importantly focusing on why the battle takes place and why it’s important to both the Romans and the “Germans”). As it is, in the show, we don’t get any idea why the Romans are even there in the first place and pestering the people by demanding some tributes. And we don’t get any idea why the Germanic tribes are so opposed to this or why others of them might not be. We don’t get any of the broader political implications, we just get some eagle-stealing pranks (defiance!! cool, just agitate them in a completely stupid and arbitrary way, why don’t you) and a few people executed because the “Germans” were being stupid. That’s not the scale that’s needed here. And I don’t mean that we needed to see mass executions. In fact, I would have preferred if there had been no such hackneyed and emotionally manipulative device.

Arminius is basically absent for all the early encounters of the Romans with the “Germans”. So while we suspect that the mistreatment of the “Germans” at the hands of the Romans would be a strong motivational factor for him, we don’t actually see him witness any of few hints in that direction that we get, so it doesn’t actually matter for his character arc. I have so many issues with how his arc is written. In the first episodes, we don’t get any sense that he’s not a happy Roman. When a “Barbarian” mercenary ridicules Rome, he has him whipped and we don’t get much of a sense that he’s very conflicted about it. Even just moments before he ends up destroying his effigies of Roman gods, we see him trying to get Varus to send him back to Rome. Earlier in the same episode, he prays to those Roman gods. I’m sorry but wtf? How the turntables... If you want to make it believable that he would turn on Rome, why not start with him already being frustrated with the way that things in Rome work? With the way the army is run? And why not give him a careerist streak and make him frustrated that he can’t advance much further because of his lowly birth and background? And instead of Varus being an asshole to him about it (he’s supposed to be his foster father, surely Arminius would already know how Varus thinks about his people and surely he’d already know how far he can climb up the ranks), have Varus be sympathetic but basically like “sorry, there’s nothing I can do.”

Arminius betraying Rome shouldn’t be about Varus saying something mean~, if anything a personal connection of his with Varus should just make the betrayal harder and be something that he does despite the fact that there are Romans he cares about. If you start out the show with him already having significant doubts about his place in the Roman army and identity issues, you just need to add something to it that will finally breaks the camel’s back. Have him become increasingly agitated by the way the "Germans” are treated by the Romans. Start the show with him making to leave Rome, someone asking him whether he’s excited to return to his place of birth and him joking about it but obviously being conflicted and then overwhelmed when he actually gets there because it totally destroys his sense of self which he has built for himself (and for which we would have needed to see the contrast, even if just for one scene, of how he is treated in Rome – perhaps snobbed by others, not treated equally in some sort of social setting, could be something subtle – to show us and him that as much as he wishes, he is not and will never be accepted as a Roman).

And then when he gets to the provinces, we need to see that from his perspective. What’s his reaction to arriving there? To seeing the familiar landscapes? (Or maybe he was taken as a younger child and doesn’t actually have that many memories of it but feels a sense of belonging anyway.) There are so many scenes in this show that seem to hint at these things but they are completely random and unfocused and interspersed with the stupid village people shenanigans. Varus talks about burning down villages in retribution. Well, why don’t we see any of that? (Nevermind that it’s comic book villain level of evil, but I’m working with a fix here and not a total rewrite as would be better.) Surely it can’t be too expensive to burn down a few huts in the night. And having Arminius ride along / witness it but not say anything even though we can see these things having an effect on him. As mentioned: The worst offense is the scene when he rides to the village (with other Romans in tow!) and announces “hi dad!” just to have that cliffhanger. Wtf?

Characters doling out information that the viewer doesn’t have is the absolute worst way of telling a story and maintaining tension. It should be the other way around. How about instead you have him be part of a Roman delegation that rides into the village and demands [random, whatever, the fucking eagle if you must keep that shit] and when the Reik (whom the audience already knows to be Arminius’ father) doesn’t want to give it (because he’s not actually a weak fucking clown as almost everyone in the actual show is aside from feisty Thusnelda who’s a fierce~ fucking clown rmfe), the Romans begin beating the dad or whipping him or whatever, completely humiliating him and his people, and we see Arminius on his horse watching the show with growing unrest until the realization really hits him that this is his father (cue flashback to a very young Arminius being dragged away) and the tension keeps ratcheting until he shouts in German “that’s enough” before correcting himself to give the same command in Latin (maybe he still thinks in German, would be an interesting idea) and the Romans look at him with suspicion, like wtf was that, and the "Germans” are like, why tf does this Roman officer speak German, and it’s super awkward and shit and maybe Varus is also there and he looks at Arminius like, oh shit I need to protect my boy he’s actually all up in his feels about these wildlings let’s go back to the camp and have a talk, and so the Romans end up leaving and the “Germans” are like “wait, was that... could it have been.. remember lil Ari who you gave up... but it couldn’t be...” and meanwhile the beaten dad doesn’t want to hear any of that because he actually has never dared hope he would see his son again and also he kind of doesn’t want to see him again because he would be too ashamed to meet his eyes.

And then later we see Arminius pacing up and down in his tent because this won’t let him go, even after he had a talk with Varus, and after some agonizing he steals away in the night to go confront his father (if you want to keep that German mercenary noticing shit, have him notice that). And then we see the father in his hut and everything is quiet and we are waiting for Arminius to show up because we know he’s on his way. But we don’t know whether he wants to talk to his father or just kill him in revenge for the trauma he’s caused him. You’d show the dad and if it were a good actor, you could see so much in his unrest, maybe despite not wanting to think that that guy could be his son, he kind of knows in his heart that it must be and he’s unsettled and whatnot and then we hear someone outside the door and the door opens and there stands Arminius in a cloak and there’s none of that ridiculous music that wants to scream “epic” but falls way short. Have it be quiet. Have Arminius enter and pull back the hood and they just look at each other. And the dad looks like he wants to hug him but he doesn’t move. And Arminius looks like he wants to murder him but he actually moves to sit down, all the while they keep an eye on each other because who knows, they might actually end up murdering each other. That’s the kind of confrontation you need with a reunion like this jfc. And then they talk and it’s an important scene and I’m not going to write it all out but I hope y’all know what I mean.

I feel like you’d have to rewrite this whole show to actually give the character drama the weight that it needs and deserves because what’s happening in the show is dramatic af but you wouldn’t know because it’s so unbelievably stupidly written. I CANNOT believe that when Arminius is back in the village, he’s standing around with Thusnelda and Folkwin in a field as if they’re catching up at a high school reunion. “So, how’s it been?” “My name is now Arminius lol” “You’re kidding lol” ... uhm hello ??? Is this show a meme or...???

Actually as a last thought, I would have kept Arminius’ mother alive and killed his dad. His dad is irredeemable. He gave him away. But if we assume that he never had a substitute mother, then meeting his mother again (who was against giving him away) would make for much more interesting scenes and would also have a much stronger impact on Arminius. I’ll stop now but I just wanted to note how much I hate the writing on this show and everything it chooses to be. Thanks.

* They adopted a cat and called it Schrödinger . He’s a Maine coon cat (they think, he was found in a box). He’s an old cat, about 10.

* They also have a little Russian blue (again they’re not sure, he was found near an airfield)cat called Yuri (after Yuri Gagarin) but they only got him a year before the show started. He’s only a year and a half old.

* Alya comes to Marinettes apartment one time and is complaining about getting a low score on her science test. Mendeliev is marking papers while banging her head on the table saying “they’re so f**king stupid” and Alya starts screaming.

* Marinette learns how to bake through Gina, so she still makes things for class gatherings.

* When she was first taken in Marinette ate a lot of pizza. Like a lot. She can’t stand it now.

* The morning routine consists of: coffee, breakfast (cereal, they go through so much), get dressed and leg it because Mendeliev forgot she had a meeting.

* Marinette finds out about Mendeliev and Bustier by walking into the apartment to see both of them chatting (flirting) in the couch. School was bare awkward.

* The above has also happened to Alya, Nino and Adrien, but Nino saw them kissing so he’s scarred.

* Mendeliev smoked. Marinette poured water on her when she did. Mendeliev no longer smokes (she has an juul instead)

* “Ms I haven’t done my homework, what should I do?”

* Marinette purposefully tells Mendeliev about trends in the hope that she’ll pull some weird crap in class. So far, she’s heard three screams from Mendeliev saying “oh wig?” to people not finishing work.

* An incredibly distraught Mendeliev asking Damocles for help to learn how to raise a kid (I feel like she’d be 27 when she got Marinette, so she would have been teaching for 6 years). Damocles doesn’t know Marinette is Mendelievs kid, but knows she has one.

* Jagged Stone being involved with Marinette in more of an uncle/godfather way after finding out about her being adopted. Offers to look after her during holidays and after school when there’s parent evening. Not over the top, but he has definitely been called into school (during school hours)when Gina couldn’t make it.

* The bro relationship Adrien and Mari have. They act like siblings because they can relate about parents being gone and the trouble with that. They get put into groups for science classes with another random person (they good at science minus biology) and the bickering would be real.

* Nino and Adrien are also like bros, but they’re like best friend bros.

* Alya and Marinette have a healthier and more positive relationship, with Marinette being blunt about relationships. Marinette helps Alya with physics and chemistry homework in return for biology homework. The dynamic duo have lots of fun together, and neither end up third wheeling because the group ends up getting pretty close.

* Alya still falls for Lilas lies at the start , but Marinette talks her into publishing the video in a sort of speculation/public opinions based column. This would save the reputations the ladyblog when all comes to show.

* When Lila comes into the class, she lies about knowing ladybug first and Maris like oh dope. Then she says about the miraculous and Maris like “ookay bit weird” but nothing comes out of the volpina episode that damages Marinette (Adrien voices concern about her not taking being rejected well, but Marinettes like “you should be able to reject who you want bro”). Mari mainly doesn’t like her because of the lies and her ignoring Adriens attempts to get away from physical contact.

* Then comes the bull crap about the bakery girl being her best friend and Maris like “lmao what no mate” and Lila puts on crocodile tears. People react with hostility, but Alya runs her mouth and says that Mari is the bakery girl. She later gets thanked for this, but admits she wasn’t thinking straight.

* Some people are hostile to Marinette after that, with Lilas tinnitus. At break time Marinette admits she didn’t manage to get any work done. This is where Marinettes head injury rears it’s head, because she has difficulty with focusing in class because of it (I do my research this is a real thing I think). She asks why Lila didn’t move to the front row replacing Nino or Adrien (or even Chloe and Sabrina). There’s a bit of owopsie and Adrien moves himself to the back (leaving Lila with marinette, much to Lilas dismay)

* Lila tried to claim that Marinette wanted to keep her away from Adrien, to which she’s like “yeah, you don’t respect his boundaries despite his clear dislike for you touching him”. There’s a whole woe is me part, but then Alya and Nino step in like “tf dudette, thought you weren’t interested”. Then Lila cries to her mum and...

* They are “revealed” when Lilas mum demands to see Marinettes mother (to talk about how horrible she is and why she shouldn’t “bully” her kid) and despite the school offering multiple times to call Gina she refuses saying “I’m lilas mum, I should talk to Marinettes mum” and Mendeliev just sort of says “oh yeah let me get her” and she spins around and is like“hi you wanted to see me?”

* There’s a big oh feck.jpg moment in the class, but it explains a lot about Mari (why she despised Lila for using her parents death for fame, why she was so big about Adrien being able to choose if people touch him or not. Ms Mendeliev raised her that way)

* People are surprised that she doesn’t get favouritism from Mendeliev, but they both explain that they hate that (miss bustier is making notes)

*Sabine and Tom were once Ladybug and Chat Noir (for like a week) and Gina sees ladybug and chat acting like bros and is just like :,) cod they act like Sabine and Tom but less romantic and more familial.

* Marinette and Kagami just... end up together. Only Nino knows why. It does involve a can of squirt cream, a kitchen knife, three packs of blu tac and a whoopee cushion.

* The group happily integrating other people (Aurore, Mirelle and Marc) because the power of a found family is just THAT strong.

* Weredad doesn’t happen (obviously. Unless I wanted to douse this with ridiculous amounts of angst in which I would have Toms ladybug ghost being akumatised because he missed so much in his babies life)

* Marinette isn’t obsessed with Adrien, so she just has obscure sci-fi references on her walls like from “The cone heads”

* Mendeliev used to have a mild heart attack whenever she saw Marinette trip or fall down the stairs, but now it’s like “oh ya....there she goes”.

* One of the office women (receptionist?) taught Mendeliev little tips and tricks about raising the gal. Ended up being one of those people you call auntie but really isn’t related to you. (Her name’s Linda and she knows everyone’s name)

* Marinette found some heelies in a charity shop when she was about 6, and just sort of clings to Mendelievs jacket when she walks because that woman is fecking tall.Whenever she outgrows them, someone from her extended family gets her a pair. This carried on for years. Almost gave Chloe an aneurism when she first saw them do it on a school trip.

* The group all does it now. Sometimes Alix tags along, but grips onto Kim instead.

* Someone (Rose) asks Marinette whether she has an adoptive Dad and she’s like “no but I might get another Mum if she ever learns how to flirt” and Ms Mendeliev is embarrassed but Bustier is deciding if she’d want a daughter

* Post “reveal” Lila runs to the media and now the class has a daily game of finding out who are Marinettes illegitimate parents that week

* Marinette has a lot of extended family past her own, but doesn’t get to see them often cos Mendelievs family all live in Eastern Europe.

* Buffinette is real. But not from fighting or weights. It’s from dragging Mendelievs’ student’s books up four flights of stairs to get to the apartment.

*Theres no balcony scenes because having a balcony increases rent and Paris is already expensive.

* Marinette has heterochromia (an eye for each parent) because I’ve been playing overwatch and I like Moira’s design. She’s definitely more obviously half Chinese, and her hair is more a warm black (incorporating Toms hair a bit). What, this is my Au I’ll design Marinette how I want to.

* Although realistically Marinette should have green eyes after Tom because that’s how google says alleles work but idk. God maybe powerful but I’m a tired Brit who’s results day is far too close.

Why? Idk. I'm just so intrigued by this side. I really want to see more of him, and I'm excited to see an interaction with him and Remus.

-Least favourite Side? Either Roman or Remus.

Don't get me wrong; I actually don't dislike any of the sides! The "twins" are just at the bottom of my list because, I guess, I'm just not too interested in them? Idk.

-Opinion on Logan? I relate to Logan, actually, and I think that's why he's my second favorite. I see myself as being a little more mature than my friends, because I am, and they'll tell you that. But I despise being thought less of. Enough of it, and... I'll snap. I'll regret it, but listen to and respect me, thanks. I'm glad Logan is there to explain how stupid the others can be- even if he, himself, is a little stupid sometimes. Yay for Logic!

-Opinion on Roman? pff. I'm not even sure how to put this into words. He's just- great- I guess? His obvious love for Disney and general singing makes him so fun. We love our prince :3. I want to see more of him interacting with Remus- because, you know, he... Wasn't in most of the last episode...

-Opinion on Patton? Dad jokes. So loving and funny. I think he's who a lot of people like to relate to, because of everything that happened in the Nostalgia video. I'll just say, though,,, Pat has been so... I don't know. He's STILL so obsessed with forcing on Thomas that he's a 'good person.' Nobody is perfect, everybody has these dark thoughts or general sides to themself.

-Opinion on Virgil? He's made a lot of progress since Accepting Anxiety. He's so much more invested and open to the others, and he's really grown. Number three! Here's the big 'but' though, because Virgil is being a stubborn brat/kinda hypocritical recently. He's so dead-set that the Dark Sides are the absolute bad guys. Which, what the heck? Who was the exact same way, Mr. "I was one of them"? Virgil knows firsthand that just because someone is made one way doesn't mean that they are that way. Look, I get it if he's been emotionally scarred by the Darkies in the past, but I kinda think he just never cared to think that just maybe the others' number one goals aren't to destroy Thomas. Oh also i want to see Deceit impersonate him because that honestly just sounds really funny.

-Opinion on Deceit? "...I don't want Thomas to be disadvantaged in a world where you can die, by not following the laws made in the name of a lie." I, myself, lie kinda a lot? No, that's not a good thing, but it helps to get myself out of trouble. Anyway. He has this bigger plan that we don't know about, I think, and it's really interesting. He's so compelling, and I just can't wait to see more of him. And, maybe, just maybe, see him and Virgil come to some sort of agreement,,,,,? A stretch, I know.

-Opinion on Remus? Garbage rat man, get him out of here. I'm kidding. Remus is so openly honest with everything, and that's a little scary to be honest? I don't really struggle with intrusive thoughts, but I have had the occasional 'it would be so easy to shoot up a certain part of the school' and I jUST REALIZED HOW AWFUL THAT SOUNDS OH MY GOD. Eh, no one's judging me. I hope. Remus in general is a very fun character, and I can't wait to see where the team takes him.

-Speculations on Deceit’s name? I don't know. I don't really think about that stuff lol. I just call him Dee/DJ/Damien. Oh, but I do think Remus might know Deceit's name. Probably not. If he does know, though, I bet he's accidentally gonna let it slip :). Think about it; Remus never actually refers to Deceit by name. He says, like once, 'a certain snake.' That's all.

-Favorite romantic ship? I ship it all. I guess Prinxiety, Loceit though,,,

The Dark Sides were actually pretty upset when Virgil left. They weren't really accepted by the Lights or Thomas, so they just had each other. Virgil, however, strived to be out of the shadows, as the others grew to accept it. They were sad that he left them and thought that being a Dark Side was shameful, and the others were awful people. So now they mess with him and tease him and are just in general rude to him. They called him a brother; but he decided it wasn't enough, not entirely realizing what he was doing. Now he can't go back, even if he wanted to.

I don't feel bad for ending on angst.

Make-up, Piercings, and Tattoos!!! These are things me and @cosmic-chu came up with together!! All will be put under a read more because it is RIDICULOUSLY long. It ended up being roughly 10~12 pages if google doc depending on spacing

Virgil being really into make up, but being super self conscious and having trouble bringing himself to do anything more then the black under his eyes because he's terrified of being judged. He can only bring himself to indulge that much because it hides his severe bags and keeps everyone from getting concerned over his lack of sleep.

Roman being a super supportive big bro and he's actually the first one to figure it out!! It was by accident again but he was rlly enthusiastic about it when he found out!! 

"Ahsjdkf Virgil u do make up too??? Why didn't you tell me sooner, oh my goodness I have to go get all my stuff be right back"

He comes back rlly fast with an armful of makeup supplies and just sets them down, he has a rlly proud smile like look at all my stuff these are quality items I'm telling u

Virgil is frozen in fear and apprehension when Roman first figures it out, but it melts into a timid hope when Roman seems excited and brings out all of his make up. He just shakily starts going through it all, silent but obviously reeling. It's clear he's waiting for the other shoe to drop but can't help but want to see what Roman has since a lot of it he's only seen in beauty guru videos that he binges like a guilty pleasure in he free time. And just lighting up with joy when it becomes clear Roman is going to be nothing but supportive, even though Virgil tries to hide how low key ecstatic he is.

Roman just takes Virgil under his wing. Roman is fucking fantastic with Show make up, over the top looks and exaggerating looks, while Virgil proves to be a master of the more subtle looks?

Roman kinda notices it but pretends he doesn't and just goes on to show Virgil all the cool makeup he has and here you can have this concealer it's too light for me anyways, and here you go here's a blending sponge!! I didn't use it yet so it's still clean, oh and do you want this black lipstick?? I still have another in my room I use red more though so you can have it! 

he shows Virgil all the techniques he knows and the easiest way to apply symmetrical winged eyeliner, and he shows him how to contour and which colours and undertones suit Virgil the best ((and wow he's so good at subtle looks this is so unfair I literally just started teaching you))

Virgil just breaks down crying at some point because he just wasn't expecting this overwhelming support and he's confused on why he's being so supportive because he's still remembering all those years of solitude, convinced they actually still hate him on some level or they pity him

Roman being confused. Like?? Wait I thought we were having a fun time?? Was the makeup I used actually not good and it got in your eye?? Did I say something wrong?? Is the look rlly that bad? I thought it looked fine but?? D: what's wrong???

And when he learns why Virgil broke down, he feels his own heart break and he's just "oh no, oh Virgil no we don't hate you - we could never - oh Virgil come here"

Virge has to calm down before he can explain to Roman and by this point he's feeling humiliated and is mumbling, hoping Ro doesn't catch on to what he's saying, but obviously he does and he just curls up in Ro's arms

Roman can't say he 100% understands what Virgil is feeling but he understands the feeling of humiliation, so he just hugs Virgil as much as he can while it still being comfortable, and he kinda has to adjust the position cause it's an awkward one where he can't hug him properly, and he's just muttering back compliments and reassuring him, and he can't do it as well as Logan can with all his facts but he still tries ((it doesn't help that they fought - sometimes still do - a lot))

Virgil eventually calms down and they hesitantly go back to make up. Virgil shows a heavy preference to purples, black, greys and (surprisingly? Considering how bright the color usually is) pink. Sometimes blues

Roman actually really likes the colour combination! He gives Virgil a smokey eye look ((which is personally one of his favourite ones to do)) and it's not too heavy, and the look is mostly natural since he decided to go super extra another time 

Unsurprisingly, Roman likes using reds and golds, but he doesn't deny that the colours Virgil chose looks absolutely amazing on him. He's more than excited to show Patton and Logan the makeup :0

Virgil just looks so gosh darn content and happy. Like, he just genuinely looks the happiest he has in a while with his purple and grey smokey eye and dark purple/black lip stick and pale foundation and his contour

Pfft Patton is just "oh my goodness!! Virgil!! Wow are those winged eyeliners cause you look like you could touch the sky!!"

And Logan?? "stunning. I like how you made the lipstick go from purple to black, it's a nice touch. And that eyeliner is amazing, perfectly symmetrical, you learn fast"

Virgil is just blushing super hard, though it's hard to tell because of his foundation and such. 

Can you imagine Virge getting summoned by Thomas after that video is over (lets say people other then Thomas can see the sides when they pop up) because Roman and the other's were gushing over Virge's new look, cause you can bet your ass that Virge is gonna do his make up daily cause it's a confidence boost for him, and Ben wanted to compare Virge's make up to the anxiety inspired make up they put on Thomas

hc that this was why the Makeup Collab happened lmao 👌 and yes!! Just the others constantly gushing over Virgil's makeup- and pfft yes! Both of the makeup looks look amazing but Virgil does like his own more?? Idk maybe he likes it equally! :0

that's the best way (compliments)  to fluster the boi- same for Logan :0 he'll say thank u but you /know/ he's secretly dying on the inside, you can see it on the colour of his cheeks

Roman's favourite colour is red because it's the colour they turn when he compliments and fluster them enough ;0

I think he and Talyn could bond over makeup looks!! First time appearing in front of them, he's super shy and nervous and oh god what would they think?? I mean they're Thomas' friends they should be nice right?? But what if they hate it, what if they hate him, what if Superwoman still hates him?? What do the others think????

He begins to panic but luckily Thomas is there so he's able to help calm him, with the help of Roman actually!! When Virgil is finally able to get back, the others help reassure him and congratulate him for not panicking because one step in front of the other and this is progress!

He pops up with his hood Up, and he doesn't look up to let them see his make up when he first appears, so they don't know why he's freaking out, so they're just congratulating him on handling his anxiety and it's only after that is handled does he feel comfortable enough to pull down his hood and let them see his make up

Everyone sees Roman as both Thomas's creativity and femininity, and they're right, but no one realised that Virgil was ALSO Thomas's feminine side in addition to Anxiety/Caution

Also??? Virgil has lashes fOR DAYS! His lashes are already long on their own, and then he applies mascara and whoa. He could give great butterfly kisses

And this time Roman didn't even help him put any makeup on so he's like double proud of him!! Triple even!! Hecc yes Logan look Virgil is amazing he managed to control his anxiety and also look at this makeup look he did?? He doesn't understand how Virgil ever thought they wouldn't like it but again this is /Virgil/, and Roman's never really had an easy time understanding him other than what's portrayed, so he doesn't dwell on it

Patton totally asks him for butterfly kisses!! It flusters Virgil a hecc ton but he does it anyways cause it's just Dad being silly right?? And Patton fake swoons and asks Roman to catch him and Logan just rolls his eyes

Virgil musters up the courage one day and gives all the sides, Thomas, and Thomas's friends butterfly kisses to show how much he appreciates them

Virgil doesn't know how to handle his big brother and dad

You can count on Patton and Roman to be super dramatic about it like wow, did the day Virgil got a little bit of confidence was the day they decided to be dramatic?? Roman actually fell onto the ground "oh you evil wizard, you have cursed me!" then he dramatically falls to the ground, his hand on his head. Logan stares at him blankly and Patton plays along like "Oh no roman!! What can I do??"

"avenge me dear padre! reclaim my honour and take down the wizard!"

"oh of course! I shall avenge you!" he kind of hunts down Virgil, like a game, and wants to have a tickle fight. Logan plays along just for the sake of it, being the "merchant who had information"

Virgil is so done, he's gonna cry because of how hard he's trying to hold in his laughter. He's just shaking his head before screeching like a pterodactyl when Patton suddenly starts tickling him.

All those who would tickle Virgil, be warned, he's a thrasher and a kicker

He manages to avoid it for a surprising amount of the day, he's fast, nimble, and flexible even in heels because he's definitely rocking heels with the make up

It's all rlly fun and fluffy, and not even Logan can keep back a smile at this!! Roman plays dead, but he's still watching them run around and he's laughing too

Patton learned to be good at avoiding it and where to block, of course he still gets hit sometimes but it doesn't rlly hurt him actually! 

Once Patton had "avenged Roman" he comes back to life and assists Patton in his quest. Logan is actually on Virgil's side and give them the wrong info, but he pretends to be neutral for the sake of the game

Patton is a voodoo master when it comes to nail polish. How does he do half the designs he does??? No one knows.

Virgil returns the favor the best he can. He paints Patton's nails a sky blue with a cat or dog on each nail, but it's a different breed each time. It's a little crudely done, messy, but half way decent because he's somewhat artistically inclined

Patton doesn't even care if he would just put a dot or something, he absolutely loves it anyways and he flaunts it around like look what my son did he's so talented!! Roman look at this dog!!! It's on my nails I love it!! :D

I once wrote a long, anonymous letter to the headteacher or my school wrt the treatment and education of lgbt people. Besides that? I havent dont much. I’d go to a protest if there was one nearby that I supported.

England: Are you controlling?That’s hard to answer? Because when things happen my initial instinct is to control them. But I’m a lot more chilled out than I used to be, and continuing to try to improve on it. So the amount of things I actively try to control are very slim. The issues lies more with my hatred of vague plans tbh 😂

Estonia: Do you think people often misunderstand you?I don’t open up to that many people, not really. Most the therapists I’ve seen have never got me at all. In terms of friends, some do get it, though it depends upon what specifically I’m trying to explain/show etc.

Finland: What do you prefer; kindness, sternness or apathy?Kindness, for sure. It’s nice to know other people might look out for you when you’re not necesarily in a place to look out for yourself. Sternness is just,, hard to communicate with and apathy can put me on edge.

Poland: Hardest thing you’ve been through?The thing that comes to mind was the longest and most stressful night of my life. I’d just broken up from school for summer that day and we had an estate agent coming to value the house the next day so we could move out of the Flood Zone. That evening it rained and rained and I ran around the village asking council people to help us but no one came so we stayed up till 2am pouring water from around the house into wheelie bins to try and stop it coming in. Then I had a breakdown in the bath and just remember feeling so trapped. I never want to go through that again.
