Reverse 1999 and the Nature of Tragedy: Analysis on how the tragic structure is used and potentially why (spoilers for Chapters 2,3 and 6 mainly)

Reverse 1999 loves tragic characters, we don't go any patch without suffering. Here Im going to explore how the tragic structure in literature is presented in the game through at least three main story chapters.

Tender is the Night (although I have covered aspects already in previous Chapter Two analysis)

What is Tragedy?

Tragedy is often described as a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character (thank you Oxford Languages)

Yes this is common knowledge but the core to a tragic narrative is the inescapability on the tragic ending - the way I usually describe tragdies is like a cake no matter how you slice it, it is either too sweet or stale and never a perfect bite.

Tragedy in Tender is the Night

This will be short as I have analysis on the chapter in previous posts so here will be specific bits. Schneider here can be considered the tragic character as she ultimately gets taken by the storm, while I don't consider her to have a traditional tragic flaw the status as a human pretending to be a arcanist does doom her character. She is denied by the Foundation/ the Chicago Branch so attempts to find safety in the Manus by lying that she was adopted into the Greco family, however likely Manus had captured Mariam and after being tortured by them reveals Schneider's identity.

Throughout Chapter Two there is a moments of false hope that she might be saved, somehow surviving multiple bullets (I mean really she was shot so many times arcane healing must do wonders) . It is only the very end to we realise Schneider was never going to survive (gameplay does trick us as well since we can play as her in the boss fight of Ch.1 and for some reason still in the final tutorial stage which I only found out at lvl 40 when I wanted clear drops lol).

Tragedy in Chapter Three

A large part in tragedy is the helplessness the audience feels at being aware of all events yet unable to prevent events from happening. We get the perspective of Constantine setting up the conditions for the Breakaway attempt to occur on the day of the Storm, even making us watch chess board style how Vertin and her friends are lured into a trap. Tragic characters do not need to experience a literal death, as Vertin could be considered the tragic heroine here, her hubris being the hope and desire for the outside world that led her to attempt to leave SPDM. Ofc she doesn't die but her actions result in the reversal of her friends and cementing her role as the Timekeeper.

The point of no return could be seen in the children choosing to escape on an earlier date, unable to see the scheming and manipulation of Constantine to create loopholes the children view as opportunities to escape rather than a trap.

Tragedy in Chapter Six

This is a big one as operas and plays tend to be tragedies themselves. Isokania is a tragic relationship as both Isolde and Kakania regardless if they lived each other were doomed from the start: being an unethical doctor and patient relationship, Kakania not being a licensed doctor therefore completely misjudging her patient's wellbeing, Isolde's own mental instability, dangers of her arcane powers, the history of her family ... the list goes on. Even if they ended up together they would not truly be happy.

Isolde is a tragic character, other than being a reference to Tosca, she is doomed by the nature of the arcane power and the nature of her family. A family own for misfortune as a result of their arcane skills (her sister dying at age 3 to a seance) + the social pressures of being an upper class woman in the 1910s.

Book six having a reference to 'A Streetcar named Desire?'

So we already know Book Six reference multiple tragic operas such as Tosca but I want to suggest the final chapter in this patch potential makes reference to a 1940s tragic play called "A Streetcar Named Desire".

(This is a stretch since Tennesse Williams published the play in the 1940s not the 1910s)

So. In this scene Kakania attempts to interrogate Isolde on the nature of The Salvation, to confront the fact that she was the co-creator to the painting, the fire was caused by Theophil who hoped to end both his and his sister's suffering but was shot by Isolde instead.

It is notable that Isolde repeatedly asks for the lights in the room to be turned down, refusing to look at the truth in the painting. While we could just view this standalone I think we could make a guess or suggestion that this scene is meant to reference another tragedy.

(Maybe there is an older tragic play that employs a similar scene but Ive only studied this one, someone can tell me in comments)

A Streetcar Named Desire sees a fading Southern Belle Blanche Dubois move into New Orleans with her sister Stella and her husband Stanley effectively as a last resort, her past is filled with "leaky roofs" and instability with sleeping with men to survive, alongside the destruction of the Old South leads to her to seek refuge with her only surviving family.

She almost finds salvation here, finding love in an ordinary man named Mitch. However this is a tragedy. Late into the play Stanley, Stella's husband confronts Blanche on her lies about her past, putting a light to her deception in order to reinforce is own authority over the house. Eventually succeeding in sending Blanche to a mental hostpital (Im summarising a play, I may miss other details and this is long)

And what about Isolde? Like Blanche she is forced to confront the truth she had tried to repress in her memory, remember in a previous seesion with Kakania the detail that she shot Theophil with intent (again who allowed her a gun and who taught her? I guess she can channel the spirit of a sharpshooter?) is omitted, similar to how Blanche in the play distorts the truth with lie, the "what SHOULD be true" could be viewed as Isolde making the world her stage, everything as a performance that never ends.

The idea of having to confront the truth of events being forced into the light is similar to Blanche's reoccurring motif of bring adverse to strong light, revealing all her flaws. However the person forcing them to see the truth is different, where Kakania acts out of a determination to right her wrongs and find the Storm Immunity Ritual to save everyone, Stanley (similar to Mr Karl) acts out of self preservation and malice.

Here's the big one: why does Reverse 1999 employ so much tragedy?

Tragedies are usually employed as a message to the audience, a commentary on the state of the world about people/ individual facing the impossible force of society, its expections and its demand for conformity.

There can be many answers, we still have more chapters to explore the narratives of this game but so far it seems Reverse 1999 wants to tell a story about overcoming adversity, to not be defined by others or your past, to "beat onboard boats against the current" (see what I did there?) even if the odds are surmountable. It is a struggle for both the truth and the future even if the odds are against you.

(We could analyse each 'focus character' of each patch because I think they generally follow this theme but that's alot, the game is still updating and i have uni soon so)

I think they have a really wholesome relationship /p and /r and i think its really sweet for an to be such a big proponent of touya getting new experiences and especially watching their relationship grow as the game progresses and seeing the two of them develop an understandingof eachother!!! Anhane is so.....anhane....*wipes tear* I finished writing a 15k words long anhane fic last night so my passion for these two is very strong. I think Anhane is a ship that is prone to misconception especially in the way some people characterize An—how some people just see her as Kohane obsessed and water down her character just to that (the way i see it is that Kohane is a BUFFER to everything that makes An who she is!!! Again. Another rant for another time) While Anhane's dynamic isn't the first of its kind, it really goes deep!! The mutual importance to eachother is so precious to me.... Kohane who was given the chance to grow into her best self and An who gets to gets to share her love of music and Vivid Street. With An's crippling abandonment issues ESPECIALLY regarding kohane, anhane is a ship that is SO fun to play around with wherein it gives you the best fluff and angst....anhane so good

Akikoha is one of those ships where I will randomly get hit by the most severe brainrot of my life for a few days and then be fine but have to live under constant threat of gettjng killed by akikoha cuteness... akikoha is just so cute man!!! Disecting them down to a deeper level, I really love how they complement eachother in their world views and how they approach things!! They both admire eachother so much!!! With Akito and Kohane, they seem really different from wachother but all they want to do is prove themselves!!! I also love to see akito hyping kohane up!!! Good stuff!!!

Whether you like them romantically or not can we just talk about how banger their dynamic is???? Their constant bickering makes them so fun!! An and Akito have known eachother since middle school and probably met some time after RAD WEEKEND when Akito would sing on the street and catch wind of An. I think this plays in to not only their deep friendship but also their rivalry!! The two of them indirectly helped eachother through their loneliness 🥺🥺 An found comfort in Akitos voice simply being there!! Then we obviously have akitos deep understanding of an (although generally he's just very perceptive of the people around him!! Don't forget!!!) We see in sis bfby and kiuan where akito is able to see RIGHT THROUGH an and call her out on her shit! That familiarity means so much to the both of them and I think their dynamic is SO sweet what the hell man!!! Guys akian is so peak EVERY VBS PAIRING IS SO PEAK

5. Toukoha ☕️🐹

EVERYTIME SOMEONE CALLS TOUKOHA BORING AN ANGEL LOSES ITS WINGS 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 NO ONE GETS THEM 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 NO ONE DESERVES TOUKOHA 😭😭😭😭 anyways toukoha get shoved aside alot as the quiet ones of vbs when. Guys. Thes mfs are YAPPERS. Touya and Kohane's autism sync up like Bluetooth. If you want to be enlightened on toukoha I EMPLORE you to go read take the best shot....do it for them.... I wish they had more in game content there's not even alot of them in card stories which is sad because that's usually where u can find the most content for vbs pairings outside of ahn/akty 💔💔💔 I think their dynamic in vbs main story is really interesting....... if you think toukoha is lame YOU are lame 🫵🫵🫵

Guys I LOVE akitoya very much they are SOULMATES but I put them down here because I think about them the least (i am biased towards women. Off topic but shoutout to girltouya) and don't trust myself to write an analysis of them 😭😭😭 but I really do love them they are very cute

I know people (at least from my experience in vbs communities) get really defensive over ships so remember that I ADORE all of these ships and brainrot all of them

Hi sorry for asking im just genuinely curious, what are all the changes you'd make to the sun/ moon anime? Stuff like lusamine, guzma, etc. I love seeing you pop up in the guzma tag to rant abt how they butchered my guy, and im curious of all the stuff you'd personally change abt the anime bc it. It has problems. Sorry again for asking i just love disecting my fav media and discussing its flaws and how to better them!!!!

The biggest change would be letting Lusamine be a villain which in turn would let just about every character that got shafted actually get to have their stories.

Not shying away from her abuse which caused both Gladion and Lillie to runaway from home taking pokemon that were tortured by Lusamine with them. (Hell, you could even hint at some of the issues in Alolan society with overlooking/not talking about or helping with abuse)

Getting rid of the pokemon school angle since, the trial captains literally have only approximately an 8 year window that they can be trial captains if the age cut-off is twenty and folks are expected to start their island challenge at 11. Those kids don't have the time to be dicking around at school, especially not the older ones like Kiawe and Mallow. Like, being a trial captain is a huge fucking honor in their society and they'd likely prioritize it over other stuff. Also, I don't care for nerfing characters for no good reason.

Storywise, I think using a combination of the story from the Sun/Moon game with some of the stuff from the Manga version of the story that managed to use stuff from Ultra without downplaying Lusamine's shit could make for the best adaption of the story with a few tweaks. -> Instead of the pokemon school plot, why not have Ash try his hand at being a research assistant? It'd be something new to do with him, give him a reason to be around and work with the professors, give him extra reason to explore Alola, and interact with Aether Foundation, and come in conflict with Team Skull. -> I can also see him trying his hand at the Island Challenge b/c of course, he's the protag. Hell, he can even make friends with the trial captains along the way.

-> Let Lillie be the deuteraganist proper! Let her be an actual trainer to Nebby! I hate some much that the games want us to have her pokemon just cause its the fucking box legendary, that's her pokemon and by all rights it would make more sense for her to catch it b/c that would be safer for Nebby in the long run. -> Not putting Hau on a damn bus for 97 episodes! He's the game *rival*, he's a major fucking character. Let this boy be present from jump and be both Lillie and Ash's rival. Explore his feelings about being stuck in Hala's shadow, the MC's shadow, and his sympathies with Team Skull.

-> ( A complaint I have with the games is I don't think Team Skull should be as rude or distant to Gladion as they are. Like, why would they make fun of him for being homeless if they're squatting in a rundown building? If Team Skull are supposed to be a group of homies and found family against the world, why wouldn't they adopt Gladion's prickly ass and tease him for being an edgelord? Also, just while Guzma acknowledges and respects Gladion for also escaping from and abusive household and wanting to get as strong as he can, I want more to be done with that than just paying lip service. Let them bond. ) -> Ah, yes, where was I? Gladion as a member of Team Skull. Not just hired help/an enforcer like in the games but an actual member. Let him bond with them damnit. And also keep him in a rival role to Ash while being a bad guy. Hell, its been a long time since I've watched the older pokemon seasons but it'd be fun to have a bad guy who keeps a long-running win streak over Ash. Let him keep his anime win streak and be a 'bad' guy.

-> Let Guzma have his role as the decoy big bad! Don't nerf him, don't slander him. Have folks mention him and have him show up at several points and have those eps be fucking heavy for one reason or another. He is a problem of a trainer and knows strategy and covers his team's weaknesses. -> While I hate everything the anime did slandering my guy making him the 'Undefeated' b/c he's a chicken that only targets weaklings, I wanna see Guzma being called the 'Undefeated' for serious, like folks thinking he's a chicken b/c of his ace and not taking every challenge sent his way but no he's actually good like that. I wanna see him beat Ash multiple times, yes Ash needs to beat him at some point to kickstart Guzma's character development but I wanna see him struggle to get that victory. -> You have no idea how much I want to see Guzma interrupt anyone who tries to use a Z move in a battle with him out of pure spite instead of just standing around doing fuck all while folks chant and do the poses. It would make so much more sense if he had his golisopod just sucker punch a pokemon in the middle of the z move stuff. It would be a good way to show that he's ruthless and very intent on bucking tradition. -> After I realized that like Guzma got possessed by a nihiligo in the of games and the manga and we were denied a perfectly good opportunity for a monster!Guzma rampage and opportunity to show how much Team Skull cares about each other that a 'I know yer in there come back to us Boss' and a 'help us save our Boss' could have added, I feel a bit miffed. Like I even commissioned fic to have just that and its good and everyone should read it and share with their friends. -> I do like that Team Skull didn't disband at the end of the anime. Them breaking up is one of the things I don't like about the games. Like, the can reform and stay together. (I also commissioned fic for Team Skull reforming while staying together and its good and everyone should read it and share with their friends)

-> Plumeria would have more things to do if Team Skull in general had more things to do and were taken a lil more seriously than they are in the anime. I do like the idea of her scouting and scoping and infiltrating in disguise. Also, I think she should make it farther in the pokemon league conference than she did b/c she's also a good trainer, and smart, and ruthless too. -> I think if she did make it further in the pokemon league conference and had to fight Guzma then that would be a great opportunity to show that the two characters are actually really good friends and know each other well. Certainly, I'd have Guzma win that fight, I'd also have that fight be the only one where he actually shows good sportsmanship towards his opponent. B/c he likes and respects Plumeria.

When it was on Netflix a few years ago I do remember watching some of the Pokemon Sun/Moon eps. And I remember how strange it felt that the ultra beast stuff had like a goofy Power Rangers type bend with folks suiting up as like a task force to deal with the things and just... idk maybe we should play the aggressive and fearful pokemon from another dimension more seriously. Darker at least. Cause like... ultra beasts kill people, they're a lot more dangerous than pokemon, they can do a good number on the environment more so than the invasives that are native to the dimension that the series takes place in.

I beat Pikmin 1 in 9 Days

Okay, so first off, that's not /that/ big a deal. It's not a tie for the world record or anything, however it is, as far as I know, the quickest the game can be beat without exploiting any major glitches.

I purposely went out of my way to do this run without researching the optimal path because figuring out everything myself was fun. Pikmin is one of my favorite games of all time and I usually replay it once a year

So, now I'm gonna go over that, what my process was, and do so in a way you'll understand even if you haven't played Pikmin.

So first, let's disect what those days actually mean. The time limit for the game is 30 Days, in which you have to collect 30 ship parts. Days themselves are 13 minutes and 30 seconds long in Pikmin 1.

There are 5 areas in the game, so naturally you'd think, "Well, can't you just do it in 5 days then? Finish each area a day?"

And that's a blatant 'No' (at least without glicthes)

Day 1 must always be spent in the Impact Site for the tutorial. Here you will get 1 Part and 25 Red Pikmin regardless of how good you actually do. There's another part here, but both yellows and blues are required to get it.

Meaning that 2 Days must already be used to get 1 part each. When you mix this with the final area, it means 3 days of this run have to be spent wasting an entire day on a single part. Meaning the other 6 is where we have to get the remaining 27 Ship Parts.

Day 2 is also very limited in what you can do. You have to break down a wall and build up reds while doing so which already takes more of the day than you'd like.

Now in a normal run, this wouldn't be a big deal. I'd build up reds, get Yellow Pikmin, build them up and get at least two parts.

However that's a colossal waste of time in this run.

The Forest of Hope (where you go in Day 2) has 8 ship parts. So you'd think. Okay, build up yellows and reds first day there and then the remaining 5 parts or whatever wouldn't be hard to round up in a second day. That sounds like you're making good time, right?

Well, you need to have 5 Ship parts to unlock the Third Area (The Forest Naval)

And you need the Blue Pikmin found in The Forest Naval to get all the ship parts in the Forest of Hope.

So, during this first day where you're already rushed due to building up 2 types of Pikmin for the first time. You need to collect at least 4 parts, or else this easy 2 Day Area will have to a 3 Day Area with alot of time wasted on two of those days.

I won't go into too much detail because routing what parts to grab, while very fun, probably won't be the most entertaining.

What's important is I was able to get the 4 parts in a single day there. Meaning 2 days in, I could already go to the Forest Naval.

Day 3 the hope is to get Blues as quick as possible. I usually like to lure the Breadbug near the Blue Onion because that's the easiest time to kill it for the ship part and then it won't get in the way.

Now the Naval has 9 Ships parts in it. Meaning you probably wanna do one day that's building blues and getting parts near the base, making sure you take care of walls and bridges to the best of your ability. Which is exactly the approach I took. And fortunately this area took the least practice for me to do.

I got a good first trip run pretty fast, which just left.

Day 4 has 5 Parts remaining, which is alot. Especially since two of these were busses while others were kinda long puzzles needed to do. But, I believe it just took me two real attempts before I was able to just do so. Meaning on Day 4, we've completely our first of the 5 areas.

Day 5 and Day 6 you can either go back and finish the Impact Site or finish up the Forest of Hope. The Impact Site is nice because it's just a single part, and as a result you can build up all your Pikmin types, meaning from this point onward you don't need to worry about enemy corpses and growing Pikmin. You'll have enough to finish the run.

And the Forest of Hope's 4 parts are easy to finish up as well now that we have Blue's.

Day 7 is where this gets TOUGH. The Distant Spring is by far the most difficult area in the game. It's really the only bit in this game where I tend to lose Pikmin to any meaningful degree during casual playthroughs. Wollyhops are annoying to deal with, Spotty Bulbears are BRUTAL and there's a ton of them over the map. Swooping Snitchbugs and Burrowing Shearwigs really make it hard to leave Pikmin unattened unless you're confident. And it has 10 Parts for you to get. Going into this I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do it in 2 days and I shot for 3.

At first, I was only able to get 3 parts in a day, and even that took alot of work, mostly working on the ones in the open water area near base. However after realizing how I was almost able to get the remaining 7 on the second trip, I decided to try again, just shooting for 4 parts and one of the puzzles done so all I had to do was carry it back the next day.

And, I got 5 Parts in a day! The 3 in the water behind base and then two of the closer ones. This and I had managed to destory every wall on the map which would make my next day way easier

Day 8 went smooth as a result of Day 7 going so well. There were some parts where Wollywogs have to be gotten through, but both of those are an ease. Then the far side of the map with the puzzle where you have to use Candy pop buds to make Blues Yellows and then Blue's again. Which is unfortunately time consuming above all else and ruined a few of my runs when I was trying to do 7 in a day.

But that's manageable, just leaving a boss fight you have to do with some reds. That for me isn't a problem.

However the only big Pikmin loss this playthrough did occur as the red Pikmin carrying the treasure back woke up a Spotty Bulbear and they all died.

But even with that hickup, the day was finished with time left to flower some reds to make the final day even easier.

Day 9 is anticlimactic. This is just an area (The Final Trial) with the final Boss in it and a single ship part. There's an easy puzzle I optimized my ability to do quick for no reason, then it's a matter of using Bomb Rocks to Stun the boss, followed by attacking with Reds. The day finishes with basically half the time left, it's not a challenge whatsoever, more of a victory lap.

And that's that!!!

Pikmin 1 is one of my favorite games of all time and I've played it so much since I was a kid (this was done on the Switch version, thus why only 3 playthroughs have been recorded. Launch Playthrough, mine earlier this year and then when I decied to do this)

And it felt really nice to optimize myself and go through, and not look at any speedruns or take advantage of any glicthes.

I can't speak too confidently, but I think 9 days is the lowest possible amount without taking advantage of any major glitches. Since Days 3/5 areas need to be completed in 5 days. Just leaving The Forest Naval and Distant Springs where you could theoretically do them in one day. But given the size of each area that sounds near impossible (I'm sure I've already been proven wrong by a TAS)

Point is, I feel good, and it felt nice to do this with one of my favorite games

Hmm thinking about how when Xehanort brings Ventus to Eraqus, Terra and Aqua are questioning him and Ven starts screamin cause he can't remember anything from when he was training with Xehanort or before. Knowing what we know about Ventus' past after UX it's such a different scene from when I played it years ago. It's so cool how whenevrr new lore is dropped it changes the experience of the older games. It's so fun! There's always new stuff to disect no matter how many times i replay these games (:

Terra is such a good character maaann.. He wants to believe there is good in every person. He isn't stupid and he isn't easily mislead. Xehanort wasn't lying when he told Terra about Ventus and Vanitas, so Terra had no reason to suspect him. He's relieved when Xehanort tells him this story. He really doesn't want to suspect that there can be darkness in people. People are taking advantage of his KINDNESS! He believed in Xehanort right up until he stabbed Eraqus in the back. He believed in Eraqus too right up until he attacked his little bro. What Xehanort tells Terra isn't a lie. He's not stupid!!

He's also FUNNY!? Dude is cracking jokes all the time but he's so monotone that people might not catch it if they don't know him that well. I'm sure Aqua thinks all his jokes are hilarious. Ven probably doesn't get most of them. Man

Maybe this is borderline headcanon but I get the feeling Terra is worried about coming off as scary/intimidating (and i relate to that so hard) i think he's very softspoken so he doesn't scare people who only see his size and demeanor. Now this is big self projecting but perhaps he had anger issues as a child, and that's why decided to train under Eraqus..? Yeah this is my HC now.

I am not straight, and i am not gay. So here is my understanding as someone who thinks about gender and sexuality theory a lot but doesn't have first-hand knowledge of this.

The truth of the matter is simple. Everyones experience is their own. There are people who are attracted to people mostly on looks. And dont really care whats in your pants. There are people who dont have interest in dick or in vag. And thats okay too. Its not transphobic to not want to suck girl dick. And there are people who it is solely personality that matters.

Labels to me. Are something we give ourselves to simplify our attraction. We can disect it. And explain it. But to me all labels are just a baseline statement.

I know a lesbian who is dating a man. She considers herself a lesbian because 99% she is attracted to only women. Because 99% of the time only women fit the type of stuff she's looking for in a partner.

I do believe there are people out there who are 100% straight or gay. But i believe it is because what they are attracted to is so narrow they have only found it in people that fit those terms

If you were only attracted to people who have very specific boob shapes, for instance. That would narrow it down a lot. And likely exclude most trans and nb's.

If you were only attracted to people who you have a common video game interest with, for example. That would narrow your field (depending on game) significantly towards one gender.

People who "dont really have a type" on the other hand are far more often bi or pan.

While each person could just say what they find attractive. It's much easier to say "I'm gay," then saying. "I've never found anyone of this gender attractive, but that could change. idk"

replayed mega man 5 and it is really odd how this game has the best second half of the nes games, all things considered. the first half is really lame with pretty easy robot master stages and bosses besides crystal man's stage, and then you get like actually fun set of stages in the second half. the bosses throughout the entire game are incredibly easy though especially compared to what came immediately before and after it but 5 has such a good set of stages in that second half that it makes up for fairly boring bosses somewhat. it is a good game to recommend to newcomers all things considered as besides crystal man's stupid crystal drop section that sucks ass the game is rather easy and really really generous on giving out etanks + was the introduction of the mtank that fully restores health and all weapon energy (hilariously slowly but still). if the weapon selection wasn't the worst in the entire series, it would be a bit better overall though. not a single weapon feels worth using that isn't beat, and during my entire playthrough I used buster besides the boss rush. the charge shot feels too powerful in this game, a real overcompensation of how 4's was too weak, with it not being until 6 where they finally figure out the perfect middle ground which becomes that standard for the rest of the series, with that fun exception of 8+ &b's goofy gimmick buster upgrades. 5 is so interesting to disect. a lot of good ideas here, really interesting difficulty curve, unique and fun version of rush coil that I wish was a toggle or upgrade into ala 8 and 11's shop upgrades that feels stronger than normal rush coil overall for a lot of reasons, a fun selection of theming, and just that really strong second half. 5 is better than i remember it being, even if that first half is still pretty weak.
