Also for those who are wondering, I'm not allowing real life/vine/tiktok submissions. Why? because I feel like they would have an unfair advantage due to people more likely to vote for the "funny ha ha" joke submissions. Also I wanted this tournament to just be about fictional characters.

Thaumcraft thoughts again but this time I'm thinking gameplay rather than lore. Comparing 4 and 6.

To start off, 6 is obviously unfinished. This alone means in a comparison w/ no addons 4 wins without a doubt.

Still, even without addons there are interesting points to make here based on what we saw in thaumcraft 6 and what we might have seen if azanor didn't fall down a well or whatever.

Fundamentals: The first tab of the 'nomicon is far more straightforward, and much less likely to give a new player an aneurysm as soon as they open the book. The only part of this I dislike is how long it takes to get to golemancy. The research system is explained on this tab, but we'll save that for last.

Auromancy: Auromancy in 6 is far more fleshed out than in 4. Plus, I personally prefer the casting gauntlet to wands. It feels much more thaumcraft, and less fairy tale magic. You're using your gauntlet to force the world to your desires. It's badass. And the modular focus system allows you to accomplish so much more. The excavate focus in 4 is a joke. It's slow, the range isn't great and it doesn't do enchants. It makes you feel sad and wet and pathetic. In 6, you make a plan silk touch excavate lvl 2 focus and you tear out 5x5 blocks of raw stone. You feel like a thaumic god, shaping the world to your desire. Is it balanced? Absolutely not. Having auromancy draw from the chunk-based vis system is hilariously broken. Vis cost doesnt matter because you move 8 blocks over and all your magic is back. But so much in thaumcraft is underpowered for the required time and effort compared to other mods, that it's nice to feel powerful for once. Ofc its limited by the small amount of effects in base tc6, but we're going to discount that for fairness.

Golemancy: The tc6 (and possibly 5? idk I never played that version) version of this mechanic is much more useful and interesting. Making golems is a pain in the ass now but theres so much more depth with the customization system. And not having to make a new golem for each task in your process makes life much easier. Though it must be said with how cheap golems were in 4 you could get a golem-based farm up and running much faster. It suffers in some areas, combat golems being pretty much useless except as bodyguards, in which case they try their best ig.

Artifice: The new arcane bore is slightly less expensive and clunky, but it's still ass. Splitting artifice and infusion was an excellent decision. The vis generator is a great addition, though it feels simultaneously underpowered and overpowered - it's basically free, but the generation is so bad you need a few to get the same power as an IE windmill and you'll burn through the aura eventually.

Infusion: Again, splitting this into it's own category is common sense. There are a few interesting new things in this tab: the verdant charms, especially the feeding one, are excellent QOL. The stabilizers and upgrades are good too, but I dislike having to purposefully destabilize an infusion to unlock the research, especially as its essential for what little endgame there is in base. I think the eldritch and void stone altars are new in this version, but they're unobtainable in base.

Alchemy: Tubes work better now. It's a fun time. The transducers are better tho, and can easily trivialize essentia organisation. Hedge alchemy I think is also new, and it adds some nice utility. Aversio is a nicer name than telum and no one liked Arbor anyway.

It's somehow simpler and infinitely more tedious than the tc4 mechanic. At least that was a minigame, albeit a tedious, frustrating game that required multiple thaumonomicon dives (or, yk, an online tool). It also doesn't make sense. Nothing I'm doing here relates to what I'm trying to learn. In 4, the research pattern often had fun nods to what you were actually doing, like having Venenum in a research about poison, or linking all the primals for a late game research. Celestial observations suck. I sleep at night I'm not gonna grab my scribing tools and paper to scribble a drawing of the moon. MC Eternal lets you buy curiosities, which just makes everything so much nicer.

Moving on.

In terms of things I would have liked to not be left behind in 4, firstly I'd like my goddamn outer lands please. Also centivis, but without nodes it really wouldn't make sense. Tbh the whole chunk based aura system is a bit meh, it breaks a lot though it is convenient.

I was going to discuss addons in this post but this is already really long and I'm tired so I'll save that for another day.

Scar joked that when you stole an emerald block from Impulse's nether portal path, the 'emerald fairy' would show up and replace it. Impulse is just wondering how he figured it out.

Words are not in my brain about this headcanon, but what is in my brain is a glittery green magical girl transformation where Impulse shifts into the Emerald Fairy whenever he touches an emerald block. The block gets consumed by the magic and turns into his wings and the energy to fly with them, and he can size blocks up or down to work with them still in his tiny state. If he goes too long without touching emerald, he transforms back. Better hope that doesn't happen over lava if he's working in the Nether!

okay so this first point is, like, barely a liner note for the fic proper. but did you know i have spent the past several weeks engrossed in the mcyt-trio polls. i have written two fics for it and made a web weave and i'm already planning a third fic for the finale next round as a thank you to the mods. shit's crazy. i rushed the editing timeline on every martyr in this jungle because i wanted to publish it before the time on this poll runs out. vote eclipse federation if you haven't already, with the disclaimer that it's got like 16 hours left as of me writing this, and keep an eye out for a bench trio fic coming soon to a blog and/or ao3 near you

anyway! fic time!

the most-used word in this fic that is not a name (the top three words are of course Vitalasy, Zam, and Subz) is again. this is on purpose. during editing i deleted an instance of "again" due to awkward phrasing and i had to double-check before doing so that it was still winning in Word Frequency or else i would've added it back in somewhere else. they have had this conversation before. maybe not in its details, but in its shape. they are having this conversation again, again, again.

vitalasy has so many issues around zam being afraid of him, even though (a) vitalasy hasn't actually done anything to anyone other than himself*, (b) zam is the one who killed vitalasy. some things i was drawing on for character inspiration here: the song hold no guns by death cab for cutie, the poem ON BEING RAISED ON FAIRY TALES IN WHICH YOU ARE THE MONSTER by a.m.h. *sorry for the planetlord erasure

zam...isn't actually as afraid of vitalasy as vitalasy thinks he is. zam is, like, a normal amount afraid of all social interaction, due to who he is as a person. he is an incredibly scared and jumpy guy, because he has an anxiety disorder, but he isn't actually particularly scared of vitalasy qua vitalasy anymore. vitalasy just...has issues from when he was.

relatedly: if this were from zam's pov, every time there is the slightest pause in the dialogue you'd get his internal monologue, which is approximately "oh God oh fuck this is going so terribly what do i say why am i so bad at talking to Vitalasy what do i do" the entire time. he's trying! and the tension on his end is much less "aaaa Vitalasy who I am scared of is here" and much more "WHY DO I KEEP SAYING THE WRONG THING. WHY AM I SO BAD AT THIS. OH NO HE'S EVEN SADDER NOW?????"

it did need to be vitalasy pov, though. as soon as i got the idea i knew it had to be vitalasy pov. i knew it had to be vitalasy pov because the previous one was zam pov and they're mirrors. here they are, at the grave, (again!) but now it's vitalasy standing vigil, and zam awkwardly showing up to put flowers on it.

the way it is still, constantly, about subz. vitalasy gets mad at zam for this, because zam cares so much more about subz than him, but he's just as bad--every two seconds he's thinking about subz's death, subz's note. the grave is the space between them. the grave is the only thing bringing them together. this is a bit of a continuation of the last fic. it is about zam and vitalasy but it is also about the ghost of subz.

the moon-representing-subz has Less of a presence in this one vs the last one, except for at the very end. the moon is rising. subz will be back soon. (well...it rises once zam leaves. this, too, is a metaphor.)

also related to the ghost of subz: i considered bringing up the fact that zam's been [hallucinating? haunted?] seeing subz everywhere. it didn't quite work but it's a fun little detail that is, btw, canon. canon in a "one-off line that was a little bit a joke" way but nonetheless canon enough to make me crazy about it.

the note about zam fidgeting a lot to the point of half-dancing around mapicc and spoke is about his lunar client emotes . and how he does them Even More Than Usual (which is already a lot) when he is around ppl who are also being silly w lunar client emotes <3

the thing where... they know each other. they know each other so well. they are, both of them, trying. this does not fix anything, it just makes it hurt worse.

sort of related to that and sort of related to zam's Fear (in general, of vitalasy) and sort of its own thing, zam is.. mm. zam's got certain expectations of people. and it's easy to assume they're about his [past issues in relationships] or even about [the person he is presently talking to] but they're...not, really. they're not zero about those things but they're not only about those things either. they are in large part about what zam, personally, thinks he deserves (punishment, death, bad things, etc). (occasionally when zam feels better about himself it's about how zam is a Victimhero Martyr and everyone else is a sort of prop in that, which vitalasy also has a huge complex about, but that's less relevant in this fic specifically than the...thinking he deserves for vitalasy to hurt him & on some level he wants vitalasy to hurt him as a weird self-harm-by-proxy thing & therefore vitalasy is probably going to hurt him)

the song the title comes from is Estate Sale Sign by the Mountain Goats. it's one of my #1 eclipse federation songs, tbh it's also one of my #1 s4 zam songs in general--i also am fond of it for team awesome. the title, though--that's all eclipse fed. they are all martyring themselves. they have all either banned themselves off or seriously considered it. they remember loving each other and now they still love each other but they are giving away that love. mm. [i remember when we loved each other day and night//and high above the water/the eagle spots the fish/every martyr in this jungle/is gonna get his wish]....man. also thinking about ["This is a song about, um, you may find it necessary to get rid of all your stuff, at some point."] and vitalasy burning all his stuff before his suicide. that's less relevant to the fic, though.

the series title is really funny to me. credit to angel qfitmc on tumblr for making this joke on hyperbeam chat and me cracking up every time i remember it. the thing is. while vitalasy and zam are being so fucking angsty and miserable about subz's suicide. subz IS playing dark souls. also elden ring. jump king. etc. bro killed himself in minecraft to become a variety streamer and i think that's beautiful. he's just chilling. this was of course epitomized when zam tried to bring him back but he was too busy playing dark souls and so he just Didn't. point is you don't have to stand at his grave and weep he is LITERALLY doing a pokemon nuzlocke run right now on twitch dot tv. unfortunately this is not stopping these two. from standing at his grave. and weeping

"Are you alright?" Kol'son sighed when he found his mate in their bedroom. The boy was sitting on the edge of the bed with his tunic draped over one knee. He was bent over his belly, his arms wrapped around it, fingers and palms gently massaging. There was a furrow between his brow that the Viking was having trouble deciphering, it was either pain or worry and he didn't like either. They'd fucked twice that morning which was getting more rare the older their son grew but with the sudden appearance of the not-so-stranger all that built up pleasure and relaxation seemed to evaporate. The chieftain stepped closer, crouching when he reached his wife so he could check in on the brood. He frequently worried when he thought Dom might be in pain, Inga had warned him it was possible for multiple babes to try and come early. "I got Tavis to the village bath and gave him something to wear. He wanted to clean up before seeing her." He explained, he didn't want his lover to worry any more than he already was.

Dom seemed to almost startle when his husband touched him gently- he hadn't meant to get lost in thought but so often his brain jumped around and kept him anxious anyway. He was so scared for the meeting that was fast approaching. He knew it would change everything, he just hoped it was for the better. Poor Tavis… He must be so full of trauma after being held captive so long, but he was apprehensive how Inga would handle it too. She has grieved, she had left their son with the fae's family to keep him safe because she'd been young and unwed and her father made her. At least that's what he assumed, they didn't talk about it often. He hadn't even known she was sent to Harald's for her pregnancy. He was still confused at just how old the bastard was when he died, the man had obviously aged well to have been a friend to Kol's grandfather before his death. How had they gone from that close to the man hating his best friend's son over a woman? It was despicable.

He'd waddled himself to the bedroom while Kol had shown Tavis around, he was too overwhelmed with fear for his family. Gods, poor Modig. He'd been close with Tavin from what Dom understood, the fairy prince had missed his brother so much he took Mod as his own without telling the boy who he was or that he was even fae. Dom shook himself, gently massaging where their babes were resting low. He should be focusing on them after realizing there were at least three. He should be cuddling his mate and family but no, he was a leader now and needed to care for his extended family first.

"Jus' worried." He hummed back, sighing deep when his husband gently lifted his stomach. He didn't take as much of the baby weight as he normally did, they weren't in the right position, but it still helped.

"About how much of a dumbass I am? Yeah I get it." Kol teased, still slightly embarrassed about how long it took him to catch up to the situation. He knew it was because he'd still been floating high on post nut mating hormones and he didn't like anyone around his pack but still. He just hoped he'd figured it all out finally.

"Nah. Already knew you was a Viking. Didn't marry ya for ya brains daidí, ya know 'ow to make me 'appy and tha's enough." Dom was joking… mostly, and they both knew it. They teased each other like brothers as well as building each other up like lovers are supposed to. Kol'son smiled back, taking it as the hidden compliment it was and he pressed enough kisses to the swollen belly in front of him to cover however many babes they might have.

"I mean… I have to imagine if I got one of my parents back… I'd be happy." He whispered, swallowing a lump in his throat. It was something he'd been thinking about of course. How could he not? Mod had grown up without any parents but he was now getting both back. Kol had grown up with both for such a short amount of time and then lost both, neither way felt fair. Though it was Dom he felt the worst for. He was never given any good time with parents of any sort and yet he was being the most caring queen for his people. Dom proved to him that sometimes it was nature over nurture. He hadn't been shown love and still he was the sweetest person he'd ever met.

Dom sniffled, he'd been crying softly since meeting the poor fae but hearing his husband be so open hurt his heart. "I know Kols. Maybe Tavis got room enough for a big family?" He tried to help the god feel better. Inga was just as much their mother as Mod's, maybe even more so at times and he hoped the newcomer could love his mate too. After everyone got to know each other of course. They just had to make it through the next few hours.

"You never really answered, you feeling alright? Physically?" Of course he felt anxious after basically attacking his heavily pregnant mate in the middle of the woods in his wolf form. He'd be a bastard if he wasn't concerned.

"Shush. Made for you." Dom soothed without answering again. He was certainly sore but he didn't see the need in admitting it. He was aching between his legs, his knees were probably bruised, and the bite on the back of his neck was throbbing in time with his pulse but he loved every bit, especially the warmth of his mate's spend still dripping between his thighs. It reassured him while everything else felt too overwhelming.

"Yeah yeah." Kol'son huffed but every time Dom said that he couldn't help but blush and to hide it he picked up his wife's tunic to help him dress. The boy giggled, happy to feel his daidí flustered but he let him help, honestly he needed it.

The boys split up after holding each other for a bit, Dom heading off to find Inga and Kol to find Tavis. They decided if Mod was with the woman they'd tell him at the same time but if he wasn't around they'd let their aunt have the moment alone. He found her in the great hall, cleaning away and he took a deep breath before sitting in his mate's throne and calling her over. He knew he couldn't hide his nerves and she would know something was up so he had to just… do it. "Inga? Sit wiv me?"

The blonde smiled when she heard his voice but the moment her blue gaze found her queen her stomach sank. She could feel the worry coming off him in waves and she knew that wasn't good for anyone. They knew how much she liked her structure and despised just sitting around when there was something to be taken care of which just proved whatever was going on was serious. "Oh gods. The babies?" She didn't mean to ask but of course that's where her fear went automatically. She'd been there every step of the way while her boys had their hearts broken from loss time and time again. It couldn't happen again. It just couldn't.

"No! Gods no. It's a good fing I fink." He sighed, taking her hand and pulling her to sit next to him. He kept a tight hold to try and ground her as she settled and he tried to explain. Fuck how do you explain something like that? Surprise- your baby daddy is actually alive but he's been tortured so long he's a little… broken?

"What the fuck do you mean Dom?" Another voice joined them and even sitting the siren felt his knees go weak. His whole body flashed frozen before his skin broke out in a sick sweat and his stomach rolled with nausea. He didn't think… he hadn't meant.. shit.

Mod stepped into view, Tom next to him with Ciarán on his hip. His kin was obviously confused and so was Inga but Mod was staring at him with the widest eyes. They looked wild as if he were a moment away from madness. "Mod- I- I um-"

"Fuck. Breathe? Breathe for me?" The halfling might feel near to broken at the news he shouldn't have gotten from his friend's mind but he cared enough not to make the boy panic. Ignoring that his cousin would be pissed and he wouldn't get sex with Tom for at least a week, he genuinely loved the selkie.

"You weren't supposed to- but of course you- oh gods-" Dom didn't mean to start crying again but he couldn't help it and he tried to breathe deep and explain. When he found he couldn't make himself speak he squeezed Inga's hand tighter and sent his thoughts clearly and slowly to Modig.

Mod stepped closer, pushing his wild hair behind his ears as he crouched in front of his mother and friend to help Dom explain something he never thought would happen. He set one palm on the queen's knee and one on Inga's, he wanted to help calm them both even though he felt himself going just a little more mad. "It seems in the forest they came across a fae. Someone who had been held captive by- by Harald and tortured for power for- fuck. For decades. They brought him here when they realized who he was but mom?"

Inga startled, she was getting so worried about her boys but Mod had never called her that. She was never one to cry but at that moment she felt tears well her eyes. She knew whatever her son was about to say was going to hurt and her heart had never choked her up so badly before. Even when she was told her lover was dead, she'd never been so scared. "What?" She sniffled, she didn't know who she was squeezing tighter. She tried to contain her emotions- she didn't want any of her boys worrying but especially not the baby who was thankfully playing with Tom.

"Tavis is alive." Dom and Mod seemed to whisper it in tandem and even so quiet it felt like she could hear it in her soul. Whatever she thought she was about to be told it wasn't that. Tavis was gone. He'd been gone. He didn't even get to know he was a father. They must have seen Tavin but… why would Tavin lie?

"Harald had him?" A sob broke free of her lips. She'd been sent to the chieftain to live out her pregnancy. She'd gotten worried though when Harald spoke of keeping her babe and raising it as his own. The day she delivered and realized it was boy she knew he wasn't safe among the clans. His marks were already showing and he'd never pass as fully human and she knew deep down the man didn't plan to treat him as a babe should be. She'd crawled into the forest with her baby at her breast, thankful that the clan men had been away pillaging. She called to her love but it was Tavin who appeared and he swore to her he would care for the child as his own. She'd gone back to her room and passed off her heartbreak as though she had lost the child. Harald had sent her home and no one had ever spoken of it again. At such a young age she'd made what she thought was the best decision, and her son had still found his way back.

Tavin had kept his word, the fairy leader had raised Mod with so much love but he hadn't let the halfling know he was fae as well. He didn't think it was safe. Modig had grown up thinking he was rescued by the fae but he never quite felt like he belonged. He always liked to wander in the forest and one day he met a boy a bit younger than him who just felt… like home. They'd played that day and many after until one day he followed Kol home and he split his time after that. He just never thought as a young orphan he'd find both his parents.

"He kept me. I- I went to find you… Inga you were- were you with child?" The small group startled yet again when a new voice joined them and the more familiar sound of Kol'son cursing quickly followed.

"Sorry! Shit. I should have knocked." He mumbled an apology but no one could really focus as the fae prince saw his lost love and grown child.

Tavis stumbled forward and thankfully Kol stayed close until they reached the huddled family. Inga didn't even try to stand, she was trembling too hard to attempt and she feared the man seeing her. He'd fallen in love with a young woman, it had been so long and she'd aged, unlike him. Though she could see what time and pain had etched in her mate's skin. "Inga? Are you… I'm sorry to surprise you. If you're not happy to see me-"

The woman scoffed and shook her head and Mod helped her stand. She gave Dom one last good squeeze before she let go of her safety net and stepped closer. "Don't be an idiot. I… I worried your memory would be far kinder than time has been." She admitted softly, trying to tame her wispy hair that escaped her tight bun.

"Nonsense. You're more beautiful than I remembered. Trust me better than that. I'm honestly having trouble believing this is real." They weren't touching yet but they were close. He could smell her again and it made him tremble.

A soft whimper escaped her and she felt even more desperate to be held by him. It almost broke her to see him and her body and heart felt alive in a way it hadn't in so long. "Fuck. Good." Her eyes widened at his curse. "Sorry I- I had worried you had fallen in love with someone else perhaps. Not that I wanted you alone but-" She laughed, how had she forgotten where their son got his gift of mind reading and speaking to the universe? "Our s-son?" The fae almost tripped over himself and she caught him. The moment their skin touched the world came alive in a way she hadn't even realized it hadn't been.

"Modig." She explained and beckoned at the same time. She could tell things were happening around them, both Kol and Dom were crowding her son to soothe him. Tom was holding back but she knew that's who would comfort him the most later.

"Hi." The halfling wiggled his fingers in a nervous wave and Inga chuckled. She couldn't help it.

"Hello." Tavis waved back. Gods they were so much alike that she almost snapped and laughed full on but she held it back. Barely.

"Who wiv Mush-Mush?" A tiny voice called out before Ciarán wiggled out of Tom's hold and tugged on Tavis's tunic. The nymph smiled down at him and crouched to his level, offering his hand to shake.

"I'm Tavis, old prince of the forest clan- and you are… his?" He asked, pointing to Tom who shook his head.

"Gods no. This is Ciarán, the little chief. He's Dom and Kol's eldest. We- I don't have children." Mod explained as he knelt down too. He felt bad correcting himself so quickly, he honestly wanted to be more open about how he felt for Tom but he knew the selkie was nervous. At least with the baby around they had something to focus on that wasn't so painful and he felt both himself and his father opening up.

"Well… actually…" Tom mumbled nervously and the room went so quiet. Dom was the first to understand but he certainly had questions for his best friend. Slowly 'oh' was whispered by every person until it was left to Modig and Kol and to the siren's surprise his mate got there first.

"Holy shit brother!" The chieftain almost squeaked but either Mod wasn't understanding or he was too overwhelmed. They understood though, it had been a big day already for everyone.

Bravado, Heroism, and When a Character Changes Tone.

The idea of a character having multiple voices or “masks of personality” for different situations is something I love to play around with. You can find some form of it in almost every character I create, usually as a response to responsibilities thrown upon them against their will.

The easiest example is Kitsune, who is the reason I did this rant at all. I know you, Star mod, don’t really know Kitsune, but it still felt fun to talk about. Also Lily mod will probably read this and actually know what all this means lol

When we first met Kitsune, she was a character named Tea Anon. Tea Anon was an excitable, knowledgeable character who acted mature to the point where most people assumed she was an adult. She’s 16, but has had the responsibility of being a magical girl placed on her since about the age of 12. Due to this, Kitsune tends to act the part of an old 1950’s action hero, or a more quippy version of a classic magical girl. She shows up, cheats her way through an uno game, saves everyone from a witch, says some cool lines, and gets home in time for dinner. She’s a guardian-heroine who lines up more with someone like Indiana Jones or Mami Tomoe than a fairy tale hero. She’s cunning and quick-witted and always out-gambits her way to victory. She’s…well, a fox at her finest. That is reflected in her card’s name: “THE PERFECT HEROINE”. She always, always gets the happy ending.

Iiiiin actuality, Kitsune is a mess who is constantly using her “out-gambit” abilities to outrun her problems and grief. She’s lost everything: Her siblings, her boyfriend, and her old teammates. All either brutally or under mysterious circumstances. She couldn’t save any of them, and her near-infinite confidence in her own abilities is pretty much entirely feigned.

This is shown somewhat in how she speaks: Tea anon/Kitsune constantly references tropes, makes self-aware jokes, and generally plays with the boundaries she’s put into. She has a somewhat advanced vocabulary and speaks to adults like they’re her equal. Most magical girls tend to do this, actually, because of their warped view of age/experience. Your age/respectability is more determined by your years of witch fighting and power level than your true age. That’s why someone like Yachiyo treats Mami, a 16 year old, as older/the same age as her, even though Yachiyo’s a legal adult. Kitsune does the same, treating herself as the same age as Hammer or Origami, although she treats Origami/Octavia as older once she knows she’s her sister.

This all is why it’s impactful when, after she’s forced to admit that she can’t save everyone, after she’s confronted with her own near-death, after she’s properly had the time to process the fact that she’s been through heck and back, her voice and tone completely changes. Her voice becomes scared and shaky, all of her confidence drained from it. Her vocabulary reverts to a child much younger than her, about the same age as the 12 year old that first made the contract and watched the snowball effect start. Because she was forced to grow up too fast, and not at all. Her mask falls apart at the seams, and hasn’t really gotten itself back together since.

But that’s only one example! YOU THOUGHT I WAS DONE?!
