There's a LOT of social interactions between human beings whose purpose really boils down to being like that thing dogs do where they go "omg YOU'RE a dog??? I'M a dog!!!!!" And that's not a bad thing. Highly ritualized "meaningless" displays of human connection like friendly greetings and talking about things like weather actually do serve a purpose which is like idk ritualized displays birds do. YOU'RE a human? Omg I'M a human!!!! Wow!!!

And they don't have to be your favorite flavor of interaction. You can even think they're silly. But they DO serve a purpose or else they wouldn't be a thing.

I know the gang cares about Arthur and they knew his sickness was serious and it's part of the narrative and whatnot, but really would it have killed them to just offer the occasional "is there anything you need Arthur?" or "anything we can do to help?" or even "how are you feeling today?" - I'm sure Arthur would rather be pestered slightly than have his rapid illness get straight up ignored yknow?

one of my fave things about teaching is that I’m NOT a counselor and I don’t have to get into the weeds with a student but also I’m part of their life every day and i see when they’re struggling and I can ask how them how they’re doing and make sure that they know I see them on a steady, daily basis and it will be healing for both of us

the whole "cats choose their owners" thing is really funny to me because ivy very much did NOT choose me. she was a slightly dim-witted and very rambunctious feral kitten, and that combination led to her getting herself stuck inside an old chipmunk nest halfway down the steep bank of the creek by my parents' house. from there she proceeded to scream her head off until both my mom and i came out to see what on earth was making all that racket, then we excavated her out of that hole like a sad little potato. she was grateful for the rescue, but definitely NOT grateful for the ensuing flea baths and conversion to indoor cat life at my apartment, which she reminds me of regularly. ivy i'm sorry for saving you from an early death due to predation/disease/cars, but can you stop biting me every day of my life please

Some studies show that people are working less when they're working from home. These studies usually take this form: We interviewed X number of people, and found that their average workday at the office lasted 8 hours, but now that they're working from home, they only work for about 5 hours. They spend less time working; ergo, they are working less.

This is missing a crucial bit of the story, however. Other studies, that take their questions one step further, find an additional tidbit of information: they analyze these employees' productivity and find that despite the fact that they are working less every day, they are getting the same amount of work done. These are salaried employees we're talking about. Who the hell cares how long they took to do something, so long as they get it done?

Brits are always insisting that we Americans are *way* too friendly, but that our friendliness is superficial. And while greeting each other with a smile and a “Good morning” is a customary respect or address, it’s certainly not a platitude. It’s functions similarly to how a handshake does in a business interaction or how a platonic kiss on the cheek does when two fiends meet. It’s not as formal as a handshake or familiar as a kiss. But it’s genuine. Believe me. Plenty of Americans ignore each other on the street. If an American doesn’t want to make contact, they will avoid your eye and put more distance between you (and it will 100% be obvious they’re avoiding you- like- you will know).
