18th century/Rococo/1700s fashion explained by a fashion history lover.
Let's start with 1700-1709. The century had just started, so the styles still looked quite Baroque. The womens fashion was a bit simple. The hair was not quite as big as what we think of when we think of the 18th century, the hair was long and sometimes powdered, the skirts were not that wide, they were quite narrow, but they were starting to get wider, the sleeves were wide and frilly at the cuff, the neckline was a bit triangular, and the bodice had a low waistline and would not push the breasts up, unlike later in the century.
The men's fashion, unlike women's fashion, was extravagant in every way. Most men wore wigs, because extremely big, long and curly hair was very fashionable at the time, most men would powder their hair or wig white, the coats were long, and the sleeves were quite big, and frilly at the cuff, the collars were long, the pants werent tight yet, and around this time you can see that men wore longer heels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next one is gonna be 1740s. During this time the fashion was starting to become more rococo, the women's hair had become flat, but powdered, braided and heavily decorated, bonnets as we know them today began to appear, the skirts were very wide and almost square in shape, the sleeves were short but puffy, usually only frilly at the cuff, and the bodices which were now highly decorated, still had a low waistline, but this time they pushed the breasts up, and the neckline was a bit square.
The men's fashion was still very extravagant, but this time, it was at the same level as the women's fashion. The hairstyles became shorter, curly bobs with a pigtail at the back were now the look, and almost every man powdered their hair, the coats were still long, the sleeves sleeves were still quite big and had frilly sleeve cuffs, but the collars began to get smaller and tighter, the waiscoats were long, peaking through the overcoats, and the pants were even tighter than before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the 1790s, there were a lot of styles. During this time, big hair was in fashion, but also small hair, so some women wore their hair puffy and powdered, while other women wore their natural hair, the waistline had gotten higher, the neckline was now triangular again with some frill, the sleeves were usually very tight, sometimes with a little bit of frill, and the skirts were quite narrow.
The men's fashion was even more versatile than the women's. Some men wore powdered wigs, while other men wore their natural hair, the coats were tight, the waistline of the coat was higher, but there was still a long tailcoat at the back, sometimes the waistcoat would peak out of the overcoat, the collars were usually big and frilly, the sleeves were tight, sometimes with a bit of frill at the cuffs, the pants were even tighter than before, and the heels were unfortunately replaced by boots and flat shoes with small buckles.

Steve Goes Punk Post Season 1
(I've been seeing all the art for this AU and I had to join in)
-After losing his friends and his position at school, Steve's left without any identity and it sends him into a bit of a spiral.
-Nancy barely comes over and without his parents home, Steve finds himself trying to, well, find himself.
-He's well aware of his nickname, Steve "The Hair" Harrington and decides to let everyone know he's not that by shaving the sides of his hair, leaving a short curly mohawk
-Steve's parents picked out every part of his life. Who his friends were, what sport he played, what he wore and now he's angry. Quitting basketball and burning almost all of his khakis and polos.
-He ends up buying a lot more jeans and band shirts. Picking up a leather jacket to complete his look, Steve comes back his senior year looking and acting very differently.
-Steve and Nancy breakup earlier and he retreats into music for comfort. Mostly The Smiths and David Bowie.
- It's only now that he finally starts to take notice of Eddie "The Freak" Munson, the older teen complimenting Steve on the Scorpions patch he haphazardly sewed on the sleeve of his jacket.
- They don't exactly hang out but they're more than acquaintances, Steve deciding to ask the kids he's started hanging around about the Dungeons and Dragons game they play to understand what Eddie's talking about half the time.
-Eddie's the one who takes him to the Claire's in the nearby strip mall to get his left ear pierced, giving him his hand to squeeze when the needle goes in.
"And you're sure the left ear's not the gay ear right?"
"Yes I'm sure. Why are you so hung up about this?"
"I just want to make sure!"
- It's as they're leaving that Steve notices Eddie's right ear is pierced.

In Part 2 of Masters of the Air, Crosby said he could make overthinking into a an Olympic sport and after reading his book I can confidently say that it’s 100% valid.
Here’s his recount of what happened during and after the mission to Trondheim, Norway in his book A Wing and a Prayer:
What did they do to a navigator who had screwed up as badly as I had? I never knew where I was. I had forgotten completely that I was to radio back a position report in code every fifteen minutes. I didn't give the groups enough warning before the I.P. If the Germans hadn't sent up the smoke screen we might have gone on to the Arctic Circle.
I had done everything wrong. I messed up the rendezvous. I should have given P.R.'s to radio and a strike message, which he was supposed to send in code back to HQ. None of that. I had left the briefed course. Because I didn't think I could navigate in Norway I took us to Scotland. Instead of being at altitude most of the time I brought us home on the deck.
What did they do for stuff like that? Court-martial? Ground me? That didn't sound so bad. Send me back to the States? Disgrace. As we headed home, I figured no headings. I computed no ETA's. I made no entries in my logbook. All I did was sit there, ooze sweat, stink, and feel sorry for myself. I grimly realized I was not airsick. I didn't use even one paper bag.
After we landed, I decided I could not endure the debriefing. I got out of the nose, dropped onto the ground. My frozen ankles hurt as I hit. Without speaking to the ground crew I walked off the concrete and into the woods. It was about a quarter mile to my quarters, but I made it, slinking along to avoid anyone talking to me. When an enlisted man offered me a ride in his jeep, I waved him off.
At the 418th site, no one was around. I went into our Nissen. Empty. I dropped onto my bed. The sweat. The smell of fear and shame. I could not bring myself to take off my fleece-lined flying clothes. I had forgotten to take the radio headset from around my neck. I remembered leaving my parachute in the plane. I should have turned it over to the rigger. What else?
Trouble.
I heard a jeep drive up, stop. A knock at the door.
The court-martial was beginning.

The Tudors ran so Wulf Hall could shuffle awkwardly around reiterating the same tired old Tudor stereotypes while claiming to be something new.
#It's so funny but as a historian I will genuinely defend 'The Tudors' to the death even with all its problems#Because it did was so few other Tudor shows/movies/media have ever done#And that is: it focused on things BEYOND just Henry and his wives.#Yes Henry was the focal point which makes SENSE but that's just it:#HENRY was the focal point. Most other Tudor media pieces have one of the wives (usually Catherine/Anne) as the focus and doesn't delve muc#Into the history or what was happening in England beyond the King's Great Matter.#The Tudors went ALL out. Yes they didn't get everything right but the fact that they tried and spotlighted so many other#Historical characters and events? The Pilgrimage of Grace? Actually LOOKING at the religious issues even if they weren't always accurate?#(Like with Aske for example. BUT AT LEAST THEY INCLUDED ROBERT ASKE like good lord it's like other Tudor media forgets everything else)#Focusing on Cromwell but also the Seymour brothers? The politics behind Henry? Even Brandon as annoying as his storylines could get.#Even smaller characters like Tallis and Gardiner and other Reformation and Counter-Reformation figures.#The fact that they featured the Reformation and Counter-Reformation AT ALL let alone tried to dive into the complexities of England's#religious crises. The burning of Anne Askew even? People having to navigate England's increasingly unstable religious situations?#The series hit its peak after the CoA/Anne stuff was over imho. Yes Cranmer and Norfolk annoyingly vanished despite being major figures in#the R/CR and they combined Mary and Margaret but god the Tudors did SO MUCH that NO OTHER PIECE OF TUDORS MEDIA has EVER DONE.#It looked BEYOND Henry BEYOND his wives and tried to paint a comprehensive pictur of a deeply troubling and divisive time in English histor#And it did so without demonising one side and it was just so good for so many reasons that I forgive its errors because damn did they TRY.#Tried in a way no one else ever has (no Wulf Hall did not I'm sorry)#(Wulf Hall was just the same old stereotypes rehashed and branded as something 'original' because it was from Cromwell's POV but again.#Same old stereotypes. Nothing actually original about anything else.)#The Tudors is so underrated for what it tried to do and what it achieved and I am reaching the tag limit but UGH god. Amazing.#Not even getting into how wonderful they were with Mary Tudor/Mary I herself and showing figures around her#Because that would be another tag essay considering the subject of my thesis.#Flawed but wonderful.#text#chey.txt

i think our flag means death is going to end in a historically accurate way, but in its own version of historical accuracy -- i.e., ed and stede faking their deaths in order to retire. here are the reasons why.
retirement has been foreshadowed consistently from ed's first full episode on the show (1x04). 1x09 hinges on the idea of retirement (the failed plan to run away). the idea of ed (and stede by association, in 2x07) leaving piracy behind has been heavily embedded throughout season 2. inevitably this seems like it would be where the show is ultimately headed in the season 3 i really hope we get
building off that last point... the idea of faking one's death as a way of escape has also been present throughout the show, particularly in season 1. specifically, ed's plan in 1x04 is to fake his death and assume stede's identity, in order to retire. for sort-of different reasons, stede fakes his death in 1x09, and although that doesn't seem to be something he's trying to keep consistent this season, the faking of his death was still an important plot point. it doesn't seem out of the question that they'd revisit this plot point again as a way for two infamous pirates to leave things behind
while ofmd is mostly not historically accurate at all, it does keep a lot of things true to history (real people like mary bonnet, spanish jackie, calico jack, anne bonny and mary read, etc.; specific things being true such as blackbeard marooning stede bonnet's crew, izzy hands getting shot in the leg, stede bonnet making people walk the plank, etc. etc....). with all this attention spent on these nods to history, it seems to me that they'd keep it consistent with the historical exits of blackbeard and stede bonnet.
i grew up in north carolina, where the historical blackbeard died, and the stories i grew up hearing sounds soooo much like a fuckery to me, if put in the context of ofmd. shit like "it took multiple attempts to kill him, rasputin style" "when his headless body was thrown overboard, it swam around the ship multiple times" (x) screams either of an elaborate fuckery, or of stories of said fuckery being exaggerated through multiple retellings. if this happens, i really hope the writers do something with these batshit crazy legends, that could legitimately be fun
this premise, depending on how it would be approached, has some seriously angst potential. (i am specifically talking about this post. that is what i want)
i love the fact that the show doesn't insist on being grimdark 100% historically accurate -- in fact, i don't think ofmd could exist in its current form if it tried to do this. but the references to/portrayals of real history are fun. and it almost feels like the show is trying adhere to history a certain amount on purpose, based on things i've read in interviews. and so i just think it would be fun if the show indulged in the angst of that tragic ending, blanketed in the knowledge that everything is ultimately going to turn out fine and happy in the end

I wouldn't really call myself a Hamilton fan, more of a history (amrev) enthusiast, if anything. However, I will admit that I was very big/involved in the fandom years ago during its peak but even back then, the biggest thing that bothered then and still bothers me to this day was the historical inaccuracies in the musical (as well as fans of the musical taking it as fact, then spreading misinformation rather than doing actual research on a subject), as well as the fact that so many people seemed to miss the point of the entire musical. I'm a huge history nerd, that's why I had originally gotten into the musical to begin with. As a theater kid, I can say that from a musical standpoint, it’s good, there’s no denying that (musically, anyway). But from a more historical standpoint? Ehhh. A lot could have been done/could have been handled differently. Though with the musical being based off of Ron Chernow’s biography on Hamilton (which is not the most credible source due to how biased Chernow is), it’s not that much of a surprise. Something that irks me about Hamilton fans is that they take everything that comes out of that man’s mouth as fact when a lot of the time he’s unable to back up a lot of his random “facts”. It’s frustrating because it’s the same people who believe that the musical is historically accurate (because they refuse to do their own research) when that couldn’t be any further from the truth. No offense, but a huge chunk of Hamilton fans are genuinely ignorant and uneducated. One of my biggest problems with this musical is how it, as well as its fandom, treats Aaron Burr. I’ll be making a separate post about Burr specifically because there really is a lot to say about him in general.

sometimes you start to wonder what the historical record for the guys you made up looks like in the fictional world where they existed. and then you make some fake documents about it.

I hate that so many people just assume that if you don't hail G*rwig as the second coming of Christ you're antifeminist or at the very least a spoilsport who hates for fun and dislikes anything.
(A similar thought happens with one tsw*ft I also find)
Literally I knew nothing about her before she burst into my consciousness with Hot Takes like "you know what Little Women needed? to be more DISJOINTED and #RELATABLE" and "cottagecore style is a more Authentic vision of the 1860s than actual 1860s clothing."
I would like to go back to that blissful state of unawareness, but here she comes again with "BARBIE WAS THE FIRST-EVER FASHION DOLL. A SPECIFIC CORPORATION THAT NOW HAS MORE MONEY THAN GOD INVENTED DOLLS SHAPED LIKE ADULTS. DO NOT QUESTION THIS."

@wicked1will0sparkles I know you suggested Grimhilde could be the Jessica to Poppy's Roger in an AU (and I'm definitely writing something for that!), but imagine if it was Shiny who got to be the Jessica of the relationship (I say that like she isn't already XD)
I'm thinking that maybe the weasels are looking into some case that the girls are somehow related to. Maybe Shiny is the one being convicted of murder after having to 'deal' with a particularly nasty patron from the club, and Poppy is trying to prove her innocence. And they get separated, just like Roger and Jessica did, while they're both trying to figure everything out, too; Shiny taking matters into her own hands, and Poppy teaming up with the people she thinks can help.
Also, just- in general, I can definitely see Popshine in Roger's and Jessica's scenes. Shiny explaining that Poppy makes her laugh. Poppy defending Shiny and finally losing her patience before getting hit by bricks. Poppy writing Shiny a love letter!!! I had to try re-writing some of the scenes with them XD
Warnings for some cursing. And murder mention.
~
Poppy watched from the side of the van as the weasels entered the building, worry written across her face as her fingers dug into her palms despite all the guns and knives the Toon Patrol carried with them. She definitely didn't want to be anywhere near whatever was going to happen to the guy they were after, the one who was supposedly behind Shiny's framing, but being out here on her own acting as a 'look out' didn't sit right, either.
What if Shiny was in there? How could she stay out here while the man who hurt the woman she loved was in there? She couldn't just stand here doing nothing!
'Deep breathes, Poppy.' The rabbit kept reminding herself, taking in the shaky breaths that didn't at all help her anxiety and brimming anger right now, 'They need a look out. You have to help them now... We're just one step closer to proving Shiny isn't a killer. Just focus on that...'
Inhale... Exhale... Inhale... Exhale... Stay calm. Stay rational. beep the horn twice if you see or hear anything. That was all she had to do. She couldn't flake now-
WHACK!
Everything went black for the horror toon, and her unconscious body would have fallen onto the concrete ground. If it weren't for the one responsible for her concussion catching her in her arms.
"I'm sorry, baby!" Shiny whispered, feeling her heart ache for her honey bunny as she carried her body to the red convertible parked around the corner, just out of sight from anybody who might peak outside the windows- which was a good thing, considering the commotion Shiny could hear from the building. She didn't need a stray bullet to hit Poppy, "I promise I'll make it up to you when this is all over."
After securing Poppy in the trunk of her car, the soft look in the performer's eyes turned merciless before she set her sights on the complex where that bastard was. It was high time to clean up this mess.
~
"Come on!"
It wasn't everyday that Smartass took orders from anyone, or let his patrol do the same. But it seemed like tonight was an exception as they all followed her out of the alley, no questions asked.
They all turned a corner, but came to a sudden stop. Shiny's eyes somehow grew wider and flashed a lime green when she saw the state of her wrecked car. Or rather, the fact that her trunk was open and empty, "Poppy? Fuck, where'd she go!?"
"Poppy?" The pink suited weasel repeated, looking at Shiny incredulously as she looked around her car in a panic, as if the rabbit in question was somehow hiding in the rubble, "That dame ran on us back at-"
"No, she didn't!" Shiny whirled around with an even meaner look on her face than before, causing Stupid to step back nervously while Psycho decided to take a sniff around the wreck. She was this close to popping that shrimp a new one, "I was keeping her in the trunk to keep her safe!"
...
"Keep her safe??"
Shiny narrowed her eyes at the smoker before huffing and looking away. She didn't have time to argue about her lack of options. Not with Poppy and the real murderer on the streets, "We ain't getting anywhere in my car. Where's your guys'?"
"Oh! It's gone!"
"WHAT!?" Whipping their heads towards the direction that Stupid was pointing, everyone could see that their van was not only stolen, but the street looked like an utter mess. More so than usual. Like someone was driving like a maniac. Or an idiot. Psycho cackled, finding this situation utterly hilarious for reasons mostly unknown, while Wheezy pulled out a few new smokes with a shaky hand. Greasy groaned and muttered some spanish curses to himself, and the proud smile on Stupid's face melted when he saw his boss' ear twitch, "... SON OF A!-"
"Calm down, Smartass. It looks like it was just Poppy." Shiny, slightly calmer now with her theory, sighed as she glanced to Psycho. To which the loon nodded as he recovered from his laughing fit; either that nose of his was somehow able to conclude this, or he just agreed with her theory. Either way, Shiny was willing to take it, "Pops isn't the best driver. She must be at her wits end if she's stealing."
"THAT'S SUPPOSED 'TA MAKE ME FEEL BETTER HOW!?"
"Mierda. You could say she's a better lover than a driver." Greasy, of course, couldn't stop himself from stepping beside the dancer and making such a comment. Though the lack of a perverse grin on his mug and the more sarcastic tone in his voice showed he was getting just as frustrated as his team was. And was the only reason Shiny only rolled her eyes at him as opposed to sending him a death glare.
"Better than you could possibly be, I assure you."
Apparently though, Greasy wasn't upset enough not to let out an offended huff and look down at the lady weasel incredulously, "I'll admit, senora, she's a cute one. But what could make you say such a thing?!" Was that rabbit not as innocent as she looked?? Oh, he was gonna have to get her secrets when this was all over... It could be part of her payment to all of them for doing this damn job.
For the first time that evening, Shiny's lips quirked up in a small but loving smile before she sighed and crossed her arms. Not at all bothered by Greasy's disbelief as she looked at him straight in the eye, "She makes me smile. That's what."
~
"Tie 'em up! We'll handle 'em later."
Despite Shiny's resistance and Poppy's attempt at a rescue- bursting into the building with the tommy gun she had found in the weasels' van, before getting yet another smack to the head- the two women were forced back to back and bound together. It was that God forsaken proof toon rope too, so neither of them could try to pull any toony tricks up their sleeves to get out of this bind.
Shiny snarled and even tried snapping her teeth at some of the goons, especially at the ones who seemed to enjoy subduing them a bit too much. That didn't stop them, of course, and Poppy's pleading of them to back off of the weasel was only met with mockery. But it wasn't taken any further than that, fortunately. And the two were left alone when the brutes walked away.
Poppy tried to control her fearful trembling. She knew that Shiny was terrified as well, even if she tried to hide it; she had to put on a brave face now while their fate was looking grim. Despite her efforts, though, the only thing that managed to calm her enough was when Shiny's fingers intertwined with her own, "It'll be ok, baby. We still have each other."
Poppy looked over her shoulder to face Shiny as best as she could, her brown eyes filled with dread and heart sinking for her lover. How could Shiny still remain calm and comfort her during this time? Why did any of this have to happen? Why... Why wasn't she able to save the woman she loved? "Shiny... I... I'm so sor-"
"Shh. Don't focus on that." Shiny insisted softly, regarding Poppy with the warmth and care she had just for the rabbit. Though she knew that Poppy must be able to see her own fear as well, and squeezed the rabbits paw lightly for both of their comfort, "... I'll be honest with you, Poppy. I'm not sure how we'll get out of this one. So we can't waste time with unnecessary apologies."
Her ears pinned back at the reminder, but she didn't try to finish her sentence. Shiny was right. She didn't want to spend their possible final minutes in self-pity. Right now, she just needed to take a deep breath, and she had to focus on Shiny now, "I'm sor- I mean... I-I love you. Shiny. You're truly the most amazing woman I've ever met. I mean it." There was no possible way to tell Shiny the depth of her love for her. Not in the small time frame they had at least. But this was a good start, at least.
However, instead of returning the 'I love you', Shiny just raised a single brow down at her, "Hm. That's funny."
"What's funny?"
"You just told me you've never looked in the mirror before, though I swear I've seen you do it every morning."
God. Even after everything, even despite the grim reaper knocking on their door, Shiny still had the time to make her heart sing and illicit laughter from her. Of course, it didn't make her completely forget their situation, but it was enough to get Poppy to look up into her eyes adoringly and let the rest of the world fade away, "How are you so charming and lovely all the time?"
"'Cause I've got the right gal, darling." Shiny's heart felt like it was melting, witnessing the pure joy and love Poppy had for her right now. It always did. But right now, it felt even more impactful than the first time Cupids arrow struck her. Thank God weasels were drawn with long necks; she still had to crane her head back, but it was worth it to be able to plant a kiss on Poppy's temple and hear her happy squeak, "You ready to find out what's on the other side for toons?"
Shiny already knew what Poppys answer was gonna be. Even with the serene look on her honey bunny's face, "No."
At that, Shiny let out a small, dry chuckle. She found no humor, nor was she trying to be sarcastic. It was just all she could do at this point while Poppy held tightly onto her paw. It was all either of them could do now, "Me neither."
~
This is all I've got. I wanted to write more scenes, but I couldn't figure out how to write them! (I STILL don't know what the major plot happening behind the scenes in this AU is or why Shiny was framed. How could I write the scenes that involved all the exposition or Doom?? 😅) but these were still fun to write! ^^

"Grandpa told me a lot about you! And he was right!"
The Chinese empire looked at the young western repubblic and, by watching his amber eyes, he didn't need to ask WHO was his grandfather.
The older man thought he wouldn't be able to see that pretty color anymore.
"About what, kid?"
"You are handsome"
China did his best to not laugh and rolled his eyes.
That philanderer never would have stopped hitting on him
