Making a Mess Part 3

Sanji x Zoro
Sanji’s vow to stave off drinking comes to a swift end when he finds himself in the red light district being handed free drinks. Yet another night of drinking with Zoro leads to them repeating their first night together.
If you haven’t already, please read part 1 and 2 before continuing, otherwise it won’t make much sense.
NSFW below the cut.
“Sanji, you’re gonna’ come ashore with us right?” Nami asked him as he collected the empty glasses he had served the girls’ drinks in.
”How could I turn down an invitation from such a beautiful lady, my sweet Nami,” He smiled.
”Even if you’re still taking a break from drinking it’ll still be fun to have you!” Franky added from where he was playing volleyball with Usopp, Chopper and Luffy on the deck of the Sunny.
”I was thinking of stopping at the night market, I’ve heard it’s got some rare ingredients I’d like to try to get my hands on.”
“Get me more sake, Curly,” Zoro called as he climbed down from the crow’s nest.
”Get it yourself Moss-For-Brains!” Sanji bit back, his demeanor immediately changing at the swordsman’s words.
“At least I’ve got brains, all you think about are tits and-“ Zoro expertly dodged Sanji’s first kick before grabbing his second one. He held it tightly, finally meeting the cook’s rage filled gaze, smirking for a second before lifting the leg he held as high as Sanji’s muscles would allow it. Clearly not expecting Zoro’s attempt at a counter, a gasp slipping past his lips as Zoro winked before letting his leg go with a slight shove to push him off balance, giving him time to walk away before Sanji could get another kick in.
Frustration built in Sanji but he opted to let Zoro be, choosing to silently collect the last few cups from his crewmates and hoping no one noticed the wink…or how flushed his cheeks were after.
They avoided each other like two positively charged magnets until they all went ashore. Avoiding each other wasn’t new, it had been a daily occurrence but after that night, things had changed. Sanji found Zoro sitting in his kitchen, sometimes even napping in the booth while he prepped in between meals. They hadn’t talked about that night, but it was apparent they both remembered it, the wink made that very clear.
Once everyone got to town, people began walking in pairs. As Sanji walked in the direction he was told the night market was, he felt someone close at his heels, turning to see Zoro. He shouldn’t have been surprised but he was, even more so when the man spoke “Want help?” They kept walking, now side by side as they maneuvered the growing crowds of this town’s tavern scene.
“N-No I’m alright, don’t let me get in the way of your drinking.” Sanji waved him off but Zoro’s pace never faltered.
“I’ll drink after, figured you’d need someone to carry your bags since you’re so dainty.” Sanji felt his brow twitch in annoyance but before he could come up with a retort they noticed the crowd thin. Zoro looked around, pulling Sanji to the side while he pulled a small notebook from his back pocket to look at the directions he had hastily wrote when someone a few islands over had told him about it.
“Says it should be around here,” Sanji looks up from the pages and scans the surrounding area. “I guess we’ll keep looking.” Sanji grabs Zoro’s forearm, knowing that if he let go now, Zoro would surely get lost. The swordsman didn’t fight this, not agreeing that he would get lost, but the feeling of Sanji’s hand wrapped around his exposed arm had his blood pumping more than he’d want to admit.
They kept walking, turning down an ally when Sanji thought he smelled meat being cooked. As the sun finally dipped under the horizon they turned a few corners and found themselves on the edge of town. The streets were lined with dim lanterns that cast a flickering red glow as they walked under them. Sanji still had his nose in his notebook, as though the directions would appear only for a second and he’d miss it if he looked away. A smile spread across Zoro’s lips slowly as he looked around at the bars and the people who were along the paths, taking special interest in anyone who would make eye contact with them. Zoro hastily wrapped his arm around Sanji’s waist, forcibly pulling him to the side of the path and coming to a stop. “Okay, not that I’m complaining, but this definitely isn’t the kind of night market you’re looking for.” Sanji looked around, it took a bit for it to sink in, but when it did his face flushed. “Come on Curly, we walked all the way here, might as well take in the sights.” Zoro smirked, grabbing the cook’s tie and pulling him towards the nearest bar. Sanji managed to wrench his tie from the other man’s hand, stopping just outside the threshold. There were a few scantily clad women walking along the building, trying to make eyes at Zoro who paid them no mind.
“I’m not sure I wa-“ Zoro grabbed the tie again.
”Stop doing that!” Sanji groaned, trying to pry the larger hands off the fabric while being led into the crowded bar. Zoro stopped and pulled enough Berries from his pocket to pay the cover for the both of them before tugging on the tie again. “I’m not a dog!” Sanji had to yell over the music, finally ripping the tie out of Zoro’s grasp and tucking it back into his buttoned blazer. They quickly found a pair of stools at the bar, Zoro immediately ordered two shots as Sanji was looking around the bar, but he didn’t know what or who for. He just wanted to look busy even though he could feel Zoro’s eyes burning holes into his back. Sanji’s gaze fell on a small stage that he could just barely see over the crowd that had gathered there, it wasn’t until he watched a woman wearing a dress that left very very little to the imagination that he realized the type of club this was. He watched as she dragged herself along the single golden pole before spinning around it as she ran her free hand up and down her body.
“Oi, Curly,” Zoro said close enough to his ear that he felt his lips brush along his lobe for a fraction of a second. He turned to look at the man who handed him a shot.
“So much for not drinking for awhile,” Sanji attempted to yell over the music that had suddenly gotten even louder. The drink burned the entire way down his throat as he tried to recall the last time he had done a shot…if ever. He hadn’t even been holding the empty shot glass for 10 seconds before Zoro replaced it with another full one before tossing back his own. “What’re you, made of money?” Sanji had to yell over the music but Zoro couldn’t hear. Just as Sanji was about to repeat himself, louder this time, Zoro pulled Sanji’s stool as close to his own as he could before leaning so close he could feel his breath on his neck. That, paired with the alcohol rushing through his system, was a problematic combo.
“They’re free,” Zoro yelled, voice gravelly. Sanji could just furrow his brow in response. Zoro nodded over his shoulder towards a guy sitting at the end of the bar, he had been staring since the two sat down. “Don’t put too much thought into it, just take it and say thanks.” Zoro put another glass in Sanji’s hand before holding his up towards the stranger even going as far as to shoot him a wink before tossing it back. Sanji mimicked him, minus the wink.
Sanji could feel the alcohol warm his thighs, his cheeks felt hot as he watched the woman spin around the pole. Zoro said something but Sanji didn’t catch it so he leaned into him, feeling his body sway into the other man’s who slung an arm around his shoulders and brought his lips right against his ear. “You wanna go somewhere quieter?” He nodded, forcing himself up, Zoro’s arm slipping down to his waist.
“Where would that be?” Zoro tugged him, leading him away from the bar and up some stairs. “How do you know where we’re going?” They got to another floor and the swordsman started peaking into rooms, ignoring the closed doors. The music thumped downstairs while moans could barely be heard from the closed doors.
“These places are all the same,” He muttered, finding an empty room and tugging Sanji inside, closing the door behind them. Both men flopped on the curved couch, Sanji’s eyes glued to the silver pole in the middle.
“You come to these places a lot?” Zoro picked up an abandoned glass of clear liquid, sniffed it before drinking it.
“Gotta’ blow off some steam sometimes, y’know,” Sanji nodded. “No you don’t.”
“The hell do you mean I don’t?”
“You never blow off steam.” Zoro leaned back against the couch before stretching his arms above his head, his shirt pulling up enough to show off his treasure trail.
“You don’t know what I do.” Sanji began digging through his pockets until he pulled out a cigarette from one and his lighter from the other, taking no time at all to light it and inhale deeply. Exhaling directly in Zoro’s face.
“I know that you popped a boner the moment I held you against that wall.” Zoro beamed with a cocky grin. If it hadn’t been for the alcohol coursing through his veins he would have been beyond flustered, but instead he felt a competitive burst.
“I had drank a lot.” Zoro reached both arms back, resting them on the top of the couch back, his knees spread wide as he smirked at the other man.
“Yeah, like it wouldn’t happen again.” He said sarcastically, Sanji opted to stay quiet knowing that Zoro was probably right. Sanji inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with smoke, holding it for a few seconds before pushing it out his nostrils. When a few more seconds went by Sanji finally met Zoro’s eyes,
“Why’re we here?” Sanji asked, resisting the urge to crunch the cigarette between his front teeth in frustration. The urge only growing when he watched Zoro shrug.
“You’re the one that dragged me across this town, I’m just trying to make the most of it.” Sanji’s eyes scanned over the other man, taking in the way his white shirt was stretched across his large chest, the fabric struggling to hold when his chest was at the apex of an inhale.
Zoro could barely handle the way Sanji’s eyes slid over his body, lingering on his thighs before slowly making their way back up to his chest. He watched as Sanji unconsciously ran the tip of his tongue over his lower lip leaving a shine over them. It was becoming too much for the Swordsman who pushed himself up, the alcohol tingling in his loins as he used his foot to nudge the blonde’s knees apart enough to be able to stand between them.
Sanji would be lying to himself if he tried to say he didn’t love the way the other man towered over him. If he had a few more drinks in him, he’s fairly certain he would have leaned over and mouthed at his covered semi but thankfully for his ego he maintained his relaxed posture, puffing a cloud of smoke up at Zoro who remained unmoving. “What’re you waiting for? Or did you forget what you were doing?”
“Big talk from someone who can’t admit that they want me.” Sanji rolled his eyes, leaning forward and around Zoro to tap the ash from his cigarette in the ashtray before leaning back again, a smirk playing across his lips.
“Like you said, it’s just blowing off steam.” He knew it was probably more than that, he knew that it was something to do with who he was dealing with that made him keep putting himself in positions to repeat their first night together. But he would rather never cook again than admit that to anyone.
Something in Zoro changed but Sanji was too dumb to notice. Zoro reached out and grabbed the cigarette, pulling it from his lips and snuffing it out on the table before handing Sanji one of the shots that had been on the table when they got here. “Smoke tastes terrible.” Sanji begrudgingly did what was silently instructed to him before putting the shot back on the table. Zoro still didn’t move.
“Jesus Marimo, are you waiting for an invitation?!” Sanji was getting frustrated, his dick was half hard in anticipation and Zoro was fully aware of that, that was part of the reason he wasn’t going to give in so quick.
“I want you to say it.” He bent his leg just slightly so it could ghost over the bulge.
“Say what,” Sanji knew exactly what Zoro wanted, he wasn’t a complex person and even less of a complex lover. But Sanji wasn’t nearly drunk enough to be so free with his words, especially when it involved him admitting how much he craved the swordsman he swore to kill one day.
“Say you want me.” Sanji huffed out a laugh.
“I don’t need to say shit, I could go downstairs and find 5 people that do what you did ten times better.”
“That may be true but at least I won’t infect you with something that would give our poor doctor a heart attack.” Zoro reached behind him for the other glass of unknown alcohol and knocked it back. “Just say it and I’ll give you what we both want,” he reached his hand forward to grab Sanji’s tie, tugging him forward a bit.
When Sanji stayed silent Zoro shrugged as he stepped away from Sanji, letting the tie slip from between his thick fingers before walking around the table in the center of the room towards the door. “Have fun jerking off in a private room, I’m gonna go find a good fuck.” And just like that, Sanji was alone with his half hard dick and alcohol clouded brain.
He couldn’t force himself to get up yet, practically praying his dick would go down enough that it wasn’t noticeable so he could get out of the bar and back to the ship without risking unwanted attention. He carded his fingers through his hair, silently cursing himself for not being able to just swallow his pride and say something.
After a few minutes Sanji had finally deflated enough to start heading back to the ship, only half concerned about whether Zoro would find his way back or not.
But before he could even make it to the exit he saw Zoro with the guy who had been buying them shots earlier. The man was still sitting on the bar stool and Zoro was standing between his knees, arms thrown around his neck, eye staring at the stairs where Sanji now stood. He could tell Zoro saw him by the corners of his lips turning up in a smirk as he kissed the man.
“Fuck.” Sanji grumbled, balling his fists as he cleared the distance between them in a few long strides, he grabbed the front of Zoro’s shirt and yanked him away from the stranger. Zoro smiled the biggest Sanji had ever seen, knowing he had gotten exactly what he wanted. Sanji pulled him back up the stairs, but only made it to the landing before he slammed Zoro into the wall like the swordsman had done all those nights ago.
“Say it.” Zoro said, hands already on Sanji’s chest and snaking around to the back pockets of his pants.
“You’re a lot of work”
“Not what I meant.” Sanji used his height to his advantage and lowered his head so he could smell the gin on Zoro’s breath. Zoro’s hands on Sanji’s ass pulled him close, so their crotches were pressed together, neither of them surprised by the other’s hard on. “It’s fine,” Zoro nipped at what little of Sanji’s neck was exposed under his one undone button. “I’m sick of waiting, I’ll have you begging in a few minutes,” Zoro pushed him back with one hand before using the other to grab the front of his shirt and pulling him back to the room they had been in moments earlier. Zoro slammed the door shut and all but threw Sanji into the couch. He landed sprawled out, barely having a second to get his bearings before Zoro straddled his lap.
“Sounds like a challenge,” Sanji smirked, his bangs pushed out of the way of his eye so he could see Zoro in his full glory.
“Not a challenge, a promise.” Zoro leaned down and started to mouth at his neck, one hand gripping the back of the couch to hold himself up while the other worked on unbuttoning Sanji’s shirt. One of the lower buttons got stuck and instead of pulling back from Sanji’s neck, Zoro tore the fabric apart.
“What the fuck!” Sanji went to push him off but before he could, Zoro’s hands were all over his chest. They slide painfully slow up his chest, they were wide enough to almost wrap around Sanji’s sides. Zoro was sitting watching the cook’s expression as his thumbs brushed experimentally over each of his nipples, watching the way Sanji’s lips parted before he caught his lower lip between his teeth just in time to stifle a moan that was about to slip out. He kept his left hand where it was, lazily teasing the cook’s nipple while the other hand slid up to his neck as he admired the hickies from their first encounter that were just barely there. “If you think this will get me begging, you’re sorely mistaken.” Sanji managed to say without his voice wavering as much as he expected. Zoro huffed a cocky laugh.
“If you think this is me trying then you’re sorely mistaken. I’m just thinking.”
“Oh god, don’t strain yourself Marimo,” Sanji smirked half a second before Zoro’s grip in his neck tightened, his thumb biting into the chef’s windpipe just enough for him to feel it.
“God, it’s like you want me to leave you again.” Zoro adjusted himself on Sanji’s lap, making sure he was still painfully hard, earning a whimper from the man under him was just a bonus. Zoro leaned over Sanji, his lips a few millimeters away from the other’s and slowly began grinding against him. Zoro was quickly getting irritated the longer Sanji managed to keep his mouth shut. He could tell that he was enjoying this, he even felt his cock twitch every so often. Zoro dragged his lips along the chef’s cheek, along his jaw and down to his neck, hoping he would get some sort of reaction.
He began sucking the skin roughly, surly turning it red and purple. He could feel Sanji’s jaw clench and as Zoro shifted his weight and moved his leg from beside Sanji’s to between them, pushing his knee as high as it could go he heard the whisper of a moan. He kept going, doubling down with some moans of his own which worked wonderfully.
Sanji was moaning and whimpering like a whore, even when Zoro pulled away to look at him he kept whining, tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. “Please,” Zoro grinned.
“Please what, Curly?” He asked while grinding more against him, groaning a bit while doing it.
“You know what.” He pleaded.
“I really don’t, remember I’ve got moss for brains.” He could hear Sanji whine a bit and just as he opened his mouth to speak, Zoro slipped his hand into his pants as if it were something he had done a thousand times. His hand was immediately covered in precum, he wrapped his calloused hand around Sanji’s burning hot cock and began to stroke him. Sanji all but cried at the contact before Zoro felt two sweaty hands grab his forearm, bringing his attention up to the other man’s face. His eyes were glassy, lips red from him biting them and he shook his head slightly. “You don’t want me to?” Sanji shook his head again but then swallowed hard and in a very raw voice said,
“I want nothing more than you to, but I’m gonna’ cum if you don’t stop,” his voice was shaky and cracked as he spoke. His grip loosened as Zoro pulled his hand from his slacks and sat up. There was a heavy silence as both men were trying to figure out what to do next, neither wanting to look at the other.
After a few minutes, just before Zoro was about to get up, Sanji sat up. He slowly pulled his legs from between Zoro’s thighs, unbuckling his pants and feeling relieved at the lessened pressure. He looked over, seeing the last of the abandoned shot glasses left by someone before them. He reached over, knocked one back before turning his attention back to Zoro who had become very invested in the cracks and dents on the wall behind Sanji.
It wasn’t until he felt Sanji’s hand on his chest, applying just enough pressure to tell Zoro that he wanted him to lay back. “I…I didn’t like the thought of you making me…and never offering anything in return.” His face was burning up but it was impossible to tell if it was from the alcohol or the sentence that left his bitten lips.
“You don’t have to…” Sanji was on top of him now, looking down at him. Zoro so rarely saw both of Sanji’s eyes that when he did he couldn’t look away.
“I want to, I know you’re dumb but you can’t be that dumb, right Marimo.” For some reason that name, that name that had always pissed Zoro off didn’t this time. The way he said it was different, the gentle touch of his hand in Zoro’s hair and the way his lips felt pressed against the Swordsman’s. It was sloppy, sure, it tasted of nicotine and gin but Zoro didn’t think he had ever been kissed like this.
At first, Zoro grabbed his waist, pushing his dress shirt up enough to feel skin. But as Sanji continued the kiss, the swordsman found himself wrapping his arms around the smaller man and pulling him flush against him. His hands went from his waist to his ass, loving the way the muscle fit into his palms. Zoro barely registered Sanji’s hands pulling at the bottom of his T-shirt, signaling that he wanted it off. Zoro reluctantly let go of his ass so he could sit up, straddling his hips like Zoro had done only a bit ago to him. Sanji pulled his shirt off of him then struggled off the tattered remains of his own. While he was doing that, Zoro unzipped his cargo pants but didn’t take them fully off. Sanji reached into the open pants and only a bit clumsily groped Zoro’s aching bulge. Even though it was clear Sanji was unsure of himself a heavy groan fell from Zoro’s lips as his head fell back against the crusty cushion.
Feeling emblazoned, Sanji awkwardly tries to wrap his hand around Zoro’s cock through his underwear. He fiddled, hoping for it to feel right in his hand but without much overthinking he yanked the underwear down and under his balls so it would stay. His hand wrapped slowly around Zoro’s shaft, stroking it with unsure hands, trying to get used to the feeling. Zoro on the other hand, was trying to control himself. He wanted nothing more than to tell Sanji how to do it, tell him to tighten his fist, cup his balls and for the love of god go faster. But he resisted, knowing that Sanji was still getting used to this and was going at his own pace.
Sanji was quickly getting more accustomed to the feeling, deciding he wanted more than this, he crawled up from between Zoro’s thick sun kissed thighs. He moved up along his sculpted form, leaving a trail of wet kisses that turned into him dragging his tongue along the man’s salty skin. Without so much as a first, second or third thought, he latched onto the swordsman’s nipple, flicking it with his tongue and feeling Zoro’s cock twitch in his grasp. He looked up through his lashes at Zoro, pleased to see his head was thrown back and a heavy sigh left his parted lips.
While Sanji was distracted by teasing Zoro, his hand had slowed to barely stroking his aching cock and Zoro was boardering on feral the longer it went without any motion. Sanji detached his lips from Zoro’s nipple and nibbled his way up to Zoro’s chin, loving the way he could feel his laboured breath against his face. “Jesus, Curly,” Zoro all but grunted, causing Sanji to pull back and look at him with a slightly concerned expression. “You’re fuckin’ killing me.” Zoro reached down both of his hands, leaning forward a bit to reach, he covered Sanji’s hand with his own and started guiding him to a pace that was less frustrating. “Need you to go faster.” Sanji sat back on his haunches, giving the other man’s cock his full attention now. Loving the way the girthy cock looked wrapped in three hands. Zoro watched Sanji who’s breathing was quick and his cheeks flushed, when he noticed Sanji nod, he let go and leaned back. A long groan left his lips as Sanji maintained the exact speed and pressure Zoro had set, he couldn’t help but blindly reach out for contact of any kind. He managed to find Sanji’s face, pulling his attention up to his face he sighed out a “Fuck, just like that.” Sanji moved his head so he could catch Zoro’s thumb between his teeth before closing his lips around it and sucking, his eyes fluttering closed. “Such a good boy,” In any other situation, Zoro would never have said something like that so early in their sexual relationship, but when he saw Sanji’s clothed cock noticeably jump he made a mental note to call him that more often.
As Sanji kept jerking Zoro’s cock with one hand, he reached into his briefs pushing them down so he could finally give his dick the attention it so desperately craved. Zoro quickly notices, grabs the waist of Sanji’s now open slacks and tugs him a bit. “Come ‘ere,” He says, wanting Sanji to straddle him.
Once Sanji resumes his position on Zoro, Zoro bats away Sanji’s hand that was still on his cock and replaces it with his, encircling both of their dicks and holding them tightly against one another. With one hand occupied, he uses his free hand to grab Sanji by the throat again, pulling him down until their lips are smashed together.
Zoro’s pace is fast and rough, and the kiss mirrors that. It’s all teeth, tongue, and moans which normally Sanji would be against but he is reveling in it. “P-Please don’t st-stop,” Sanji whines into Zoro’s mouth, biting the swordsman's bottom lip instead of his own.
“Told ya’ I could make you beg.” Zoro grunted, the corners of his mouth upturned in a cocky grin.
“Fuck you,” Sanji says, his tone was meant to be harsh but it came out as a whine.
“Would love it if you did” Zoro growls out, his pace on their cocks increasing until Sanji finally snaps, his cock spilling on Zoro’s stomach. He goes as limp as he can without getting his stomach covered in their cum, Zoro lets go of his neck and very subtly moves over so Sanji can collapse onto Zoro’s side to avoid the puddle. Zoro loosens his hand enough that Sanji’s cock is freed from the feverish pace he is going at to try to reach his own peak. It isn’t until he feels Sanji’s hand replace his own, mimicking his pace bringing him closer to his edge. Zoro can feel Sanji’s warm breath on his neck, and paired with the attention his cock is getting he doesn’t last much longer, cumming with a groan from far back in his throat.
They both laid there for a bit, enjoying their afterglow together. Zoro fidgets enough that he can wrap his arm around Sanji, pulling him even closer than they already were, given how narrow the couch is. Neither of them commented on this intimate gesture, both chalking it up to the post cum fog.
Zoro gropes the sticky floor blindly until he manages to find his forgotten t-shirt, using it to wipe up the cooling mess on his abs. Sanji took this as a signal to squirm out of the cramped spot he had between the back of the couch and the larger man, sitting up and watching Zoro, taking him in for a few seconds. Loving the way he could see his tan chest, minty treasure trail that was now slightly crusty with dried cum.He could even see some prominent veins leading down to his cock. “You always leave your cock out after sex?” Zoro joked, lifting his ass up enough that he could pull his pants back into place before stuffing his deflating cock back in.
“Do you always use your clothes to sop up your cum?” Sanji countered as he sorted himself out, watching as Zoro stuffed his soiled shirt in his back pocket so it dangled as he walked.
They both made their way out of the bar, Zoro pulling Sanji through the crowd towards the exit. The moment they were out in the cool sea air, Sanji fished around his pocket for a cigarette, lighting it before having to quickly grab Zoro as he started off in the opposite direction of the boat. They walked silently back to the ship, neither of them bringing up the fact that their hands had been intertwined since they had left the bar.
The silence was broken by Sanji just as Zoro was about to start climbing the ladder onto the Sunny, “They’re gonna know.” His gaze following the trail of hickies he had left all over Zoro’s chest and neck, some even going down to his hips and below the waist of his pants. Zoro managed to catch the slight shake in Sanji’s voice, squeezing his hand ever so slightly before letting it go and shrugging.
“We’ll just tell ‘em we found a set of twins or some shit. No one will ask you, and if someone asks me, I’ll make up something.” He started climbing the ladder, looking back at the blonde man who’s fingers were seconds away from getting burnt by the ash gathering at the end of his cigarette. “It’ll be fine, Curly” He winked and climbed the rest of the way up once he felt the other man begin to climb behind him.

One Piece Modern AU
This all came about, because @gildedmuse requested cheering up from being sick, and I took up the challenge! It started simply enough and then we just kept going, making it into what it is. In the process, we accidentally wrote/talked over @bakuraryxu, who had another awesome idea (it is GOOD, and shouldn’t be ignored.)
(Link of original post, and the attached notes:
https://gildedmuse.tumblr.com/post/620789608899330048/im-just-super-sick-so-i-am-opening-this-up-to-any )
The offered distraction that started this: “Modern Au–Zoro is that one cop that cant give his Lieutenant or Captain his location but somehow is always RIGHT THERE when needed. He also has the “bad habit” of kicking the asses of his “less upstanding” coworkers. IA both love and hate him: he weeds out the bad cops, but Dear Lord, the PAPERWORK that generates! “
And the AU we shaped from it:
ZORO: Cop. Terrible w/ directions but Johnny-on-the-Spot when shit’s going down. Has “bad habits” like kicking the asses of “less upstanding” coworkers, taking naps in the morgue, carrying around touring high school students (CHOPPER), not realizing he’s being flirted with, etc. Has a love/hate relationship w/ Internal Affairs over generated paperwork (the hate) and ousted bad cops (the love). Occasionally gets snared into ROBIN and LAW’s conversations. (Oda’s own notes say he’d be a cop, threw in PreStraw Hat (Pirate Hunter) Zoro in for good measure)
MIHAWK: Precinct Captain. Has a sixth sense (an incoming migraine) regarding ZORO and his shenanigans.
PERONA: Captain’s secretary. Loves to gossip with ROBIN and NAMI in the break room. Often has to locate ZORO and give him directions over the phone, when he gets lost...even in the building. Swears she’ll Lojack ZORO one of these days...it is unknown if she HAS.
LAW: Medical Examiner. A bit creepy, a bit hot. Tends to (whether intentionally or not) join forces with ROBIN to creep out the rest of the precinct. Is “at war” over a certain High School Student, with Crime Scene. Hits on ZORO over a cadaver, usually gets no response until MUCH later.
ROBIN: Head of Crime Scene. Often gets into conversations w/ LAW, and NAMI and PERONA. Specializes in Historical Forensics, Questionable Documents.
BEPO: Assistant Medical Examiner. Frets over LAW, ZORO and A Certain High School Student napping, paperwork needing to get done, etc. Covers napping guests w/ blankets and leaves pillows close, worries if it’s enough.
USSOP and FRANKY: Crime Scene Techs. USSOP occasionally joins ROBIN’s conversations w/ LAW, offering to search Crime Scene’s Databases for their hypothetical scenarios. At “war” w/ LAW over CHOPPER.
NAMI: Crime Scene Tech, former VICE/Undercover. Specializes in Fraud (art, financials, etc) and Questionable Documents. Usually attached to the higher end investigations as she’s able to blend in, find what she needs, and rip the rug out from under the crooks. ROBIN and PERONA are frequent gossip partners.
ACE: Cop. LUFFY’s older brother, SABO’s brother. Gets told to snap the pic of a bug and send it to LUFFY for ID and information. His phone will be buzzing for the next 4 hours, minimum.
LUFFY: Student. the Go To source for bugs and bug facts. Will send texts of information about bugs to ACE’s phone, after one question...SABO gets the Just Learned This, Ain’t It Neat?! spams. Neither have the heart to tell him to stop. ZORO lets him wear his hat and badge, as long as he remains beside him.
CHOPPER: High School Student. Will spout random, horrific postmortem facts, and frequently takes tours of the morgue and crime lab. Adored by LAW and Crime Scene. Naps w/ ZORO in the morgue during tours. Gets homemade bento lunches from ROBIN. Plans on joining the precinct when he graduates, focusing on Toxicology/DNA.
BROOK: Detective. Eccentric, good guy, C O N N E C T E D. Not shady, just a great guy--can legit get you anything: concert tickets, theater tickets, rare CDs, records, etc. Will whip out a violin and play it, at odd moments.
JIMBEI: Academy Instructor. Specializes in close combat and hand-to-hand. Hates the numbers of chokehold deaths, mourns and angered by this. Insists his students WILL be better, WILL do better--or they’re NOT going to like what happens when he finds out differently--and he WILL find out.
PENGUIN and SHACHI: Emergency Medical Techs.
SABO: Crime Journalist. Brother to LUFFY and ACE. Gets the Just Learned This, Ain’t It Neat?! spamming about bugs from LUFFY.

-LAW threatening ZORO/CHOPPER if their chosen napping spot puts them underfoot, thus hindering his work, with locking them in a drawer.
-There may or may not be a ZORO-sized space between two cabinets, thus out of the way and not underfoot. No one had ever gotten the nerve to ask.
-LAW has attempted (multiple times) to seduce ZORO over a body, but ZORO just wants the info.
-A week later has bystanders watching ZORO thump his head against the steering wheel of his patrol car, when he realizes.
-ZORO waits for the next dead body to drop, so he doesn’t seem desperate--and no, naps w/ CHOPPER is not a time for flirting.
-ZORO naps in the morgue for two reasons: it’s pretty damn quiet, and it annoys LAW.
-As far as the AU is currently concerned, most of the characters in OP are either in another city or across town--that may change.

Hopeless Heroes AU
Hero Pack
Sanji/Stealth Black/King
Stealth Black has been out if commission fro the past two years (presumed dead by the public) as he was training with a former hero known as Crimson Leg.
He returns under the name "Prince", wearing a prototype of his new suit as Usopp isn't yet done calibrating the finished version to fit his needs.
People start to talk about how similar Stealth Black and this new hero are, causing Sanji to panic and claim that the members of Germa 66 are obviously older as they are taller (they wear heeled shoes to make people believe that they're taller).
Prior to Stealth Black's early retirement, he and Hunter had a fight regarding who deserves to be saved as the previous had been raised to think like perfect Germa soldier while the latter holds all life equally valuable.
Sanji must return to his previous role as Stealth Black momentarily as Germa 66 is threatening to reveal the secret identities of the heroes.
He accidentally reveals that Prince and Stealth Black are the same person to Hunter in the process.
Due to his new suit having a crown at its chest, the public starts to refer to him as King instead of Prince much to his embarrassment.
His entering code is 0302, which just so happens to be his birthday, March 2nd.
As Vinsmoke's questionable treatment on its servants and family members is revealed, Sanji is placed onto a safehouse known as Sunny, Hunter is tasked with guarding him.
Zoro/Hunter
Upon his friend Kuya dying from falling down the stairs, Zoro realised just how fragile humans are and thus he swore to become a hero who'd be able to help everyone.
His mentor is hero known as Hawkeye, who found him practicing sword fighting on his backyard. To this day the sword hero has no idea how Zoro got past his security system nor where his parents are, thus becoming his guardian.
He transferred into a university in France, which just so happens to be the same one Sanji attends to, accidentally becoming Mr Popular due to his exotic background, athletic nature and street smarts.
As he meets Prince, he can't help but to think of Stealth Black and wish him to return. He even talks about how he misses the guy to Prince, who's literally trying to keep the fact that he's Stealth Black a secret.
He's angry at himself for not being able to accompany Stealth Black on his mission because of his cover nearly being blown. He has to make up a good diversion while another hero makes an appearance as Hunter at the same time (it's Bartolomeo, who has learned most of his signature moves).
When Sanji is moved into the safe house, Hunter accompanies him the whole time, learning that not all Vinsmokes are entitled bastards.
Hunter's ability is to cut anything and nothing if he so desires, he also can create several wind styled attacks with them along with something that is called an Asura. The latter is still an incomplete technique.
Perona has accidentally called Hunter her older brother in presence of Nami, which led to both him and her quickly make up a lie about him being Zoro's older half brother of whose existence the greenette has no idea of existing.
Zoro keeps a journal about these lies to ensure that he doesn't accidentally contradict himself.
Ace/Fire Fist
Son of a former (now deceased) heroes, Roger and Rogue, the previous having been a powerful fire ability carrying hero.
He became active as a young teen upon loosing his cool.
He was used as a test subject of project REVIVE which was supposed to be used to research the abilities of the heroes who'd died in hopes of producing one day a new generation of heroes with matching abilities along with a series of pills that were supposed to be used to suppress hard to control abilities, help with mastering them and to switch into another one if the holder' s body wasn't capable of withstanding the original one.
This project was over seen by Steel Fist Garp, who was mortified to learn about the science ward of the time (provided by the United Countries and the Royal family of Vinsmokes) using children as test subjects. He broke all of the test subjects out, providing them with happy families. The test subjects who survived were Ace, Sabo and Chopper.
Sabo/Chief
The wide assumption is that he is Ace's twin brother who just so happens to take after Rouge.
He found out about his ability to control fire during a mission where both Ace and Luffy were hurt very badly.
As Sabo was used in the project REVIVE, his hair changed colour from its previous golden yellow into the same strawberry blonde as Rogue's had been.
Although he was released from the facility by Garp, he wasn't done with being a test subject as his power hungry family continued tests in secret until Dragon (a hero during that time) broke him out at the request of Doctor Kureha.
Luffy/Rubber Man
Originally a water-air powered individual, but as he ate one of the prototype pillers, his DNA was warped turning him into a rubber man.
Though Garp was offered the ability to turn him back into what he'd originally been, the retired hero claimed that it was a good thing to have his ability change as now he couldn't be connected to Dragon nor his wife.
Luffy's mother was a former villain with water based ability. Dragon broke off of the hero union in favour of becoming a vigilante.
Shanks/Red
One of the rare heroes without super powers.
Lost his arm while trying to keep Luffy safe while visiting one of the factories that produced the hero suits and gadgets; he quite literally stick his arm between two gears to keep the kid from getting hurt and had to have it amputated as a result.
To the public, he's an intriguing mystery.
Those who don't work with him, see him as laid back and carefree guy, but when you see him step on the field, you'll immediately know that shit just got real.
He's one of Roger's former pupils.
Red works behind the scene, pulling the strings and covering for the younger heroes.
His family is so well hidden that even if you'd know who he really was, you could only trace him back to the heroes. The closest you'd get to a family would be Luffy, but do you really want to risk having Steel Fist, Dragon, Portgas Twins AND the Surgeon of Death attack you on sight?
As the head of the intelligence, nothing gets past him, if something feels amiss, he'll have it checked.
While his identity isn't a secret, somehow people still fail to believe that he's one of the strongest current generation heroes.
Mihawk/Hawkeye
One of the strongest heroes current generation has to offer, the guardian and mentor of Hunter.
Sword hero, whose abilities have been honed to the level where no matter what he yields, he can cut with it.
He has once used an actual banana in place of a blade during an emergency with rather fruitful results.
Prefers to work solo, but has made an exception for his ward.
Came to adopt both Zoro and Perona upon finding them from his backyard with no explanation for how they got there and who are their parents.
Celebrates the duo's birthdays on the days he found them.
Seems to live only with protein shakes, smoothies and fruities due to being literally too busy with being the only hero with common sense around here.
This has led to an ongoing joke about him being a fruit bat styled vampire.
His habit of sleeping in a coffin (it came with the house and he sure as hell won't be spending anymore time with people than the bare minimum) isn't helping with the vampire image.
He used to work in a team with Buggy and Shanks, there was even slight rivalry between them where they kept score on saved civilians and beaten villains. This came to an end upon Shanks' loss of an arm.
Buggy/Clown
Came from a poor family which led him to retorting to crime as a means of survival.
Was taken in by Roger, who helped him to break out of the villain circle and inspired him to become a hero.
His former ability was so destructive that he asked to be given the still work in progress medicine, but it made him sick and mentally unstable for a long time.
He used to be in the same hero team as Hawkeye and Red before starting to work solo and eventually taking an apprentice himself.
He grew up in a circus where his parental figures were thieving clowns (literal clowns), as a sign of respect and to not forget this past, he incorporated certain elements from that into his hero suit.
He's seen as the grumpy uncle by the young heroes.
His literal vibe is: *high beeper goes off signalling that there's a fight nearby* Buggy: *loud tired groan*
Jinbe
Water powered hero, who's also partially a shark.
Specialises in ocean missions.
He's in charge of public relations thanks to his calm personality and rationality.
Feels responsible for the fact that he didn't recognise Arlong's villainous tendencies fast enough.
The martial arts instructor for the new heroes who usually haven't yet found their own style or have no idea how to protect themselves.
Jinbe is literally his hero name, not a single person knows what his actual name is.
Coby
A new hero, whose mentor is Steel Fist Garp.
He's highly durable and happens to have similar affiliates as Garp, hence he was the perfect protégé for him.
He's supposed to become the fourth member of the ASL and balance their often dangerous antics. He's already proceeded to befriend the youngest member of the team, Luffy, while Sabo and Ace are still uncertain of what to make of him.
Currently, he has no hero name of his own as he is following the tradition of allowing the public name him. However, if Shanks' prediction is accurate, he'll end up with a name similar to both Garp and Ace.
Germa 66
Six member group which prides itself in high level technology and super powers.
Is made up from the Royal family of Vinsmokes.
Judge, the leader, is a hyper intelligent man with naturally high durability and strength.
Reiju was genetically altered to be capable of manipulating toxins.
Ichiji was altered to be able to control fire.
Niji's genetic manipulation led to his ability to cut electricity.
Sanji is the only one without any alterations thanks to his mother's ability to destroy unnatural elements, though it was only for one child. He's naturally durable and has high intelligence, which sadly isn't seen as a super power by his father.
Yonji's strength was amplified to ridiculous levels.
All of the Vinsmokes are naturally blonde, but their raidsuits create a coating that protects their heads, which happens to make them appear to have different hair colours.
Sora, former hero before passing away, was a support styled hero, who could nullify toxic combinations and technology.
To protect the team from being affected too much by the "lower level heroes", they have been banned from being paired with heroes who do not "match their level". Sanji, who was seen as the unnecessary part of the team was the only one who was allowed to meddle with other heroes and even then he had to write extra reports about his team mates and the mission.
Germa 66 is known to be very picky about those who are saved, preferring to keep only "important people" such as politicians safe.
Their methods are often questionable and the rest of the heroes judge both their views and the said methods.

Long Time Friend — Zoro x Reader
Summary: Zoro can’t believe he’s about to lose his long time friend shortly after finding you once again. So he jumps off a cliff to save you, as the memories of your history together hit him. He clings to every chance he has to save you.
Story set shortly after Franky joins the crew.
A/N: so, I guess this marks the end of my slumpy writer’s block, which is great XD I guess I just needed a couple of day of not doing anything. I didn’t go to work today and haven't left my house since saturday night. I can’t remember when was the last time I spent a sunday all day long in my pjs not doing shit for the entire day. I still have some Fluffvember requests pending XD I’ll deliver them all soon.
Word Count: 2K words
Warnings: Cursing. A little bit of angst.
Tumblr media
Time seemed to turn slow. A hundred times slower, the world almost felt like it had stopped spinning right there. The deafening screams of the crew surrounding you, as their captain’s eyes widened in realization and fear.
Motionless and tired, Strawhat Luffy became aware of how the edge of the cliff was starting to fall. His opponent flat on the ground, just like him, with the slight difference that Luffy was still conscious. However, as much as the sudden urge to flee hit him, he did not move. He couldn’t. Using his powers stretching them to his limits always left him unable to move for a few minutes. However, he did not have a few minutes right now, otherwise, he was going to drown in the sea.
Being the closest to Strawhat, you sprinted, running faster than ever. Sure, Luffy wasn’t your captain, you had nothing to do with the Strawhat crew, except for Zoro, your long time friend. And you knew, how much Luffy meant to him. How much Luffy meant to the whole crew. And how much Zoro cared about the crew. Your first instinct was to rescue Luffy for Zoro’s sake.
Reaching him. Luffy shouted your name, as you quickly grabbed his vest, and with the adrenaline rushing through your body, effortlessly you lifted him and threw him to the stable ground. For a brief second, you'd forgotten about the deep bleeding cut on your leg as you propelled Luffy into the air, feeling the gravity pull you down, along with the falling edge of the cliff.
Upon his realization,Luffy yelled your name once more, louder than ever, as he realized you were going to fall to the ocean instead. Risking your life for him. It all played in a painful slow motion in your eyes. Luffy’s eyes widening, his desperate voice, the ground underneath your feet disintegrating, and the roaring of the ocean getting louder and louder. Looking at the sky, you noticed the shade of blue, gently turning orange, thinking how the ocean had a completely different tone of blue. A blue that was about to swallow you mercilessly.
You fell into the ocean.
Zoro, who had not been there to witness your sacrifice, arrived to the scene, where everyone was now running towards the fragile edge of the ground. Careful not to fall. The splash of the ocean dissipating into the waves, leaving no trace that something even fell.
“[Name]!” Luffy cried.
“Luffy!” Zoro said running towards his captain, as Luffy’s eyes teared up. “What happened?”
“[Name]!” Luffy sobbed “She saved me” Zoro’s eyes quickly scanned his surroundings, however, you weren’t anywhere to be seen. However, before he could ask, Luffy continued. “She fell into the sea”
His heart stopped at once upon hearing his captain’s voice. His blood suddenly turning ice cold, his feet began moving on their own, rushing him to the edge along with everyone else. He was going to save you before you drowned.
“Back off!” He shouted as his crew mates looked back at him.
“What is he…” Sanji began.
Ussop, terrified of the look in Zoro’s eyes, along with his raging speed, he got away, giving Zoro an entrance. A small place where to jump from.
And he did. It wasn’t the first time he was jumping off land to save a devil fruit user. And it was not going to be the last one.
The memories quickly went through his mind, motivating him, fueling his desire to save you. From the moment you met at the dojo, and the many years you spent training together. To the time you became bounty hunter partners before Zoro lost his way. He was far too happy to have found you again by chance after leaving Water 7. It felt as if it was some sort of dream. You two coming across each other for the first time after almost a year of straying from each other.
Not just that. You two hung out, drank together and caught up on your adventures and how the both of you ended on the Grand Line. You two fought together for the sake of the local town’s people, fighting, back to back, just like the old times. And it felt so good.
Falling into the ocean, Zoro’s eyes scanned the darkness, looking for any sign of you. Swimming deeper and deeper, he kept recalling the good memories. Zoro remembered the warmth your eyes held, and the vibrant smile that lighted your face. The tight hug you gave him when you found him in that island felt so refreshing, for a brief second, he felt like he had returned home.
He held onto those memories as he finally spotted your drowning shape sinking lower and lower. Grabbing your wrist, he pulled you up, closer to him, wrapping his arm around your waist as he began to swim upwards.
Finally reaching the surface, he breathed in deeply, catching his breath.
“[Name]!” He shouted, breathing in once more. “Fucking stay with me, [Name]” He said looking around, looking for the shore.
Once he felt the sand on his feet, he grabbed on tightly to your passed out body and carried you to the shore. A few feet away from the sea, he gently put you back to the ground, kneeling next to you and his fingers pressing on your neck, looking for a pulse. And noticing how you were not breathing, it suddenly became impossible to do as well.
Feeling the soft beating against his finger, he quickly let go of your neck and opened your mouth gently, breathing in deeply, and giving you mouth to mouth. He pressed your chest a few times between breaths. His mind clouded with the worst outcome, feeling as if he was the one drowning now.
He then noticed the bleeding on your leg, and in a quick attempt to stop it so he could continue giving you CPR, he tied his bandana around your leg.
“C’mon, I just found you again, you can’t just leave me yet” He whispered before breathing out into your mouth once more.
After pressing your chest a few more times, you coughed loudly, water splashing out of your mouth. At once, Zoro helped you roll on your side so you wouldn’t swallow the water as you kept violently coughing.
A particular burn on your throat and nose, as your sight was terribly blurry, your eyes soar as well. You tried to catch your breath but kept coughing, a little bit less with each second until you were finally able to take a deep, yet painful, breath.
You sat on the sand, Zoro holding on to you, helping you sit up. He had his arm around your shoulders and his face close to yours. You looked up and met his dark eyes, looking at you with an endearment you very rarely saw in him.
“Zoro…” You whispered, feeling your head light and your body as if you had been beaten up.
Before Zoro could rest his forehead against yours, without a previous waning, you passed out. Your head fell against his chest as Zoro felt his heart race again with fear.
“[Name]?” He said shaking you gently. “[Name]?!” He said once more however there was no answer “Dammit” He cursed carrying you “I have to take you to Chopper, right now”
With you in his arms he started running, getting deeper and deeper into the jungle with a vague idea of where he was and where the town was. He did not know where he was going, and he was completely and utterly lost, however, he was lucky enough to find the town at once. Looking around for someone who could help him, up to this point he was more desperate for any doctor instead of Chopper specifically.
In the other hand, as soon as the Strawhats saw how Zorro had recklessly jumped into the ocean, all of them rushed down the hill, and towards the closest shore. Frank carried Luffy over, as all of them ran, hoping to find the both of you safe and sound on the shore by the time they made it. However, the hill was quite tall, making them worry about how much time they were taking it go down and reach the town a the base of the hill and closer to the shore.
Once in town, they could hear Zoro’s cry for a doctor. And following his voice, they found him with you, lying unconscious on his arms.
“[Name]!” Chopper yelled.
“Chopper!” Zoro answered.
“Let’s take her to the Sunny! Now” The little reindeer ran, leading the way as the crew followed close behind.
It took hours before you regained consciousness. Your eyes flickered open, taking a while to adjust to the faint light and to your surroundings. From a small window you could see how the sky was now dark when the last time you looked at it, it was starting to turn orange. Trying to sit up, you became aware of the bed you were in, the clean white covers and the couple of IVs you had. One coming from the veins in your hands and the other from your inner elbow.
“[Name]” You heard the small reindeer say as he approached your bed. “You’re awake! How are you feeling?”
You continued looking around, noticing the small details of the infirmary and ou quickly assumed you were in the Strawhats ship. There was a small couch by the door, and there was Zoro dozing off. However, that didn’t last, since he opened his eyes open upon hearing your voice answering the doctor.
“I’m...fine” You said unsure. “What happened?” You asked noticing how the IV on your inner elbow was connected to a blood bag and you were actually receiving a transfusion.
“You lost a lot of blood from the cut on your leg. You needed a transfusion…”
“Whose blood…”
“Mine” Zoro said before you could finish your question.
“Realy? I didn’t know we shared blood group” You answered smiling shyly as he got up from the couch and walked towards the bed.
“Me neither” Stopping next to your bed, he ran his hand gently through your hair “Chopper ran some tests and turned out I was a perfect candidate for a donation”
“Thank you” You whispered reaching his other hand and squeezing it lightly, something Chopper noticed and grinned widely.
“No need to thank me” He said squeezing your hand gently, as he looked into your eyes, glad to see them once more full of life as ever “How are you feeling?”
“Better, thank you” You answered and Chopper continued to see how the two of you interacted with each other “Also thank you for saving me”
“I’m leaving real quick, if you need something let me know” Feeling like he was suddenly crowding the room, he grabbed his small blue backpack and decided to hide in the kitchen for a few minutes and eat some candy.
“Yeah,it was nothing. Fighting back then felt…” Zoro began, his voice softer than before.
“Nostalgic?” You added, smiling gently, feeling your cheeks turn a delicate shade of pink.
“Yeah, I little bit” Zoro agreed chuckling.
The two of you exchanged stares for a few silent seconds. Something of unknown origin, urged Zoro to lean closer. And as he did, you quickly wrapped your arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer in another warm hug.
“I missed you, Zoro” You whispered as Zoro hugged you back, tightly, gently squeezing you against him.
“Me too” He purred.
“I thought I wasn’t going to see you again…” From the way your voice broke at the end, Zoro could tell you were close to crying any second now.
“It’s alright now. I’m here with you” He comforted you as a few silent tears escaped your eyes and ran down your cheeks.
Zoro broke the hug, still remaining close to you. The two of you once more looked into each other’s eyes, gazing into each other’s soul briefly before feeling the exact same impulse to kiss. Zoro first pressed his forehead next to yours before leaning closer to kiss you.
His lips, warmed yours instantly in a gentle full kiss. Feeling the intention radiating through his lips almost as clear as words. You kissed him back, corresponding to the newfound attraction distance had apparently created between you two. Cupping his face in your hands, and Zoro’s arms still around you kept the two of you, cuddled into the gentle kiss.

Samurai references in One Piece
Even when this is "short" this took me a long time to made but I finally finished it. I know that maybe I do not have ALL the references, but I'll mention the ones I've been seeing since I'm watching One Piece again. Also you'll read a lot about Zoro because he seems to be the character in which Eiichiro Oda likes to represent these warriors. I couldn't avoid pointing them out, especially since we're actually in Wano, to show you all a little of the influence they have in One Piece (at least in this arc.. or just in Zoro...). Of course there'll be manga spoilers.
1. The breath of all things.
Tumblr media
While Zoro and Daz Bones were fighting in Arabasta, Zoro sees that he is at a disadvantage against his rival because this one is the user of the Devil fruit of steel, and that is a material that he wasn't capable of cutting. After a few attempts, he remembers a particular moment from his childhood about one of the lessons that his teacher and Kuina's father, Koshiro, teach him after a young Zoro asks if it is possible to cut steel. Koshiro gives him a demonstration when he tries to cut a piece of paper with his sword, but fails. After receiving a confused look from his student, he says what is in the pic beneath.
This teaching is inspired by one of the legends of Masamune Ozaki. In this story, Masamune (Who was not a samurai but a blacksmith who still was closely related to them) is challenged by his disciple Muramasa Shinji to see who of the 2 is the best blacksmith in Japan. Masamune accepted the challenge and after days of dedication and effort he created Yawarakai Te (Soft Hands / 柔らかい手). Muramasa also worked tirelessly and, finally, shaped Juuchi Yosamu (10,000 cold nights / 十千夜寒).
To test the value of each of them, Masamune and Muramasa were summoned on the riverbank one day at dawn. Once there, Muramasa submerged the first the tip of his sword in the water, against the current. Juuchi Yosamu, the Muramasa blade, cut everything that came close to its edge: it split the leaves that floated in the river and cut in half the fish that swam nearby. It even cut the morning air and the same sunlight. Masamune recognized with a deep reverence the great work of his disciple Muramasa. Indeed: there could not exist in all of Japan a sharper blade than that blade and only a Grand Master could make a sword like Juuchi Yosamu. But now his turn had come. He closed his eyes for a few moments and unsheathed Yawarakai Te. The brightness of the soft forging of his blade was reflected on the water while the old blacksmith dipped the tip of his sword into the river. And, then ...
Nothing happened because the fish that came close to Masamune's sword swam peacefully around him, without getting hurt. The leaves that floated down the river collided with it, turned on themselves and followed their course where the current led without splitting or cutting. Sunlight shone on the sword and the wind whistled softly as it struck its edge. Muramasa began to laugh at his master's sword. "You are no longer able to make a sword that really cuts. Now the best blacksmith in Japan is me" he said. Masamune did not answer. He drew his sword from the water and, still smiling, dried it first and then put it in its holster.
An old monk who had seen everything from the other shore said: "There is a sword that is very well made, that is very beautiful and sharp, but is eager to cut and does not discriminate against who or whom. But the other sword is undoubtedly more beautiful and more perfect because its edge is still finer and does not need to cut what is innocent and does not deserve to be cut. There is a sword that takes away life and another sword that gives it. "
Note: Of course this is only a legend since Masamune Ozaki and Muramasa Shinji are many years apart (almost 100 I suppose), so I understand they did not even know each other, but you get the point.
2. The Kitetsu.
Tumblr media
The kitetsu are a "trio" of Yōtō ( cursed swords / 妖刀) that are said to bring misfortunes to their owners until they find death in horrible ways. They are demonic swords whose thirst for blood is insatiable and whose edge and ease to cut things are incredible, almost incomparable.
Now, this is related to one of the aforementioned blacksmiths, specifically with his clan, the Muramasa. Muramasa Shinji was a person of unstable and violent character, it was said that his swords leaves, shorter, more curved and more affiliated than those of Masamune, instilled in the warriors that carried them an uncontrollable desire to kill.
But the swords of Muramasa fell into disgrace when Tokugawa Ieyasu arrived at the shogunate, at the beginning of the 17th century, due to the many misfortunes that these swords caused to his family: the Kaishaku (end of the seppuku ritual in which the assistant beheads the suicidal with a katana) of Ieyasu's son, Nobuyasu, was made with a Muramasa; in his childhood, Ieyasu was wounded with a Tantō Muramasa; Ieyasu's grandfather was killed with a Muramasa katana; Ieyasu's father was attacked with a wakizashi Muramasa. Therefore, the shogun banned the use of Muramasa clan weapons in Japan. Even the Bugyō (commissioner / 奉行) Nagasaki, who was a collector of Muramasa weapons despite the ban, was executed under direct orders from the Shōgun (army commander/ 将軍) Tokugawa Ieyasu for considering this as an obvious conspiracy against his clan.
For all this, they said, Muramasa's katanas brought their owners misfortunes and unnecessary deaths, while those of Masamune were only unsheathed when the situation inevitably required it.
3. Taken from movies.
Maybe some of you already know it, but I do not lose anything mentioning it. Issho (or Fujitora) is based on Zatōichi (座頭市), the protagonist of a television series and a large number of films about a blind, but very skilled swordsman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Literally is the same thing without scars, they even have the same sword... However, the designs are not the only thing that Oda has been inspired to add to his work. There are a number of thoughts/quotes that he has also taken from different movies like this one, that he says is one of his favorites, called Shichinin no samurai (The Seven Samurais/ 七人の侍).
I won't make much spoilers. In one scene of the film, while the protagonists are looking for another samurai to join them, they hear that one has arrived at the town. To test if he's worth of joining them, one of them hides to the side of the door to ambush him, saying: "If he is a true swordsman he will be able to dodge it, a samurai never lets alcohol take control on himself". Does it remind you of something?
Tumblr media
4. Roronoa Zoro's "true" inspiration.
Even though we all know Zoro is based on François l'Olonnais, who was the cruelest pirate of the Caribbean Sea; I can say that he is also a little based on Date Masamune.
Tumblr media
Excellent military tactician, was popularly identified because of the lack of one of his eyes, commonly being called "dokuganryū" (Dragon of a single eye/ 独眼 竜). The exact cause for which he lost his entire eye is not known, but it is said that as a child he lost it because of smallpox and to save himself he took it off. After this, his mother told him he could never become a warrior, explaining to Masamune's father that having just one eye already put him in an abyssal disadvantage on the battlefield. Because of that, he swore he would never let anything else get over him, not even something like an illness. At the young age of 17 or 18 years old, he took his father's place as the leader of Date's clan; later becoming one of the most powerful Daimyō (大名) of the old Japan.
This fiery samurai was also known because of his cruelty and cold personality. Not caring who he was talking to, he'd always be a prepotent and shameless man who gained the respect, but mostly fear, of those who were around him.
5. Pirate hunter's journey.
As we all know, in the begining of the serie when Luffy asked Zoro why he sailed, the swordsman told him he was looking for someone (Dracule Mihawk) but then got lost. Sailing to the sea to find recognition and become the greatest swordsman, as he promised to Kuina, sounds like certain practice called Musha shugyō (warrior training/ 武 者 修行) that's based on traveling or pilgrimage to which the ancient samurai were ascribed. A practitioner of this concept has to roam around Japan practicing and honoring his abilities without the protection of his family or his school, all alone and exposing himself to the dangers necessary to prove his worth. The possible activities of the adventurer could include training with other schools, fighting a duel, working as a bodyguard/mercenary, and looking for a Daimyō to serve.
Soooo he found a "Daimyō" to live and to die for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note: I'm not saying Zoro is a samurai, in fact and sadly, he isn't. I repeat, I'm just pointing things that I can relate to them.
6. Kaidan.
Kaidan (怪談) is a Japanese word consisting of two kanji: 怪 (kai) meaning “strange, mysterious, rare, or bewitching apparition" and 談 (dan) meaning “talk” or “recited narrative.”In its broadest sense, kaidan refers to any ghost story or horror story, but it has an old-fashioned ring to it that carries the connotation of Edo period Japanese folktales. Kaidan entered the vernacular during the Edo period, when a game called Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai (A Gathering of One Hundred Supernatural Tales / 百物語怪談会 ) became popular. This game led to a demand for ghost stories and folktales to be gathered from all parts of Japan and China.
Originally based on didactic Buddhist tales, Kaidan often involve elements of karma, and especially ghostly vengeance for misdeeds. Onryō (Japanese vengeful ghosts / 怨霊) are far more powerful after death than they were in life, and are often people who were particularly powerless in life, such as women and servants. You all know who were servants? There's certain transtalion or meaning to samurai that says "those who serve in close attendance to the nobility"; Not only that, since Kaidan appeared in Edo period these warriors are the co-protagonists of many of those stories. If we look up at some of those stories we can conclude something; at least two of them are the "inspiration" to certain samurais in Wano and they are Kin'emon and O-kiku. We need to be clear on something, they are considered ghosts by the people of Wano that seek to avenge Oden's death so thinking that Oda made this on purpose is pretty logic, right?
Tumblr media
Lets start with Kin'emon. He's, at least a bit, inspired in Botan Dōrō (The Peony Lantern / 牡丹燈籠) This tale tells that on the first night of Obon, a beautiful woman and a young girl holding a peony lantern stroll by the house of the widowed samurai Ogiwara Shinnojo. Ogiwara is instantly smitten with the woman, named Otsuyu and vows an eternal relationship. From that night onward, the woman and the girl visit at dusk, always leaving before dawn. An elderly neighbor, suspicious of the girl, peeks into his home and finds Ogiwara in bed with a skeleton. Consulting a Buddhist priest, Ogiwara finds that he is in danger unless he can resist the woman, and he places a protection charm on his house. The woman is then unable to enter his house, but calls him from outside. Finally, unable to resist, Ogiwara goes out to greet her, and is led back to her house, a grave in a temple. In the morning, Ogiwara's dead body is found entwined with the woman's skeleton.
Why I relate Kin'emon with this story? To be honest it reminded me of him for dumb reasons ;;; The woman's name sounds like Kin'emon's wife's name, O-tsuru. Also I have the feeling that he won't be able to resist any longer being apart with his wife, wich he seems to love very much. Or not necessarilly because he wants to be with her but to warn her to run away at some point and someone will notice and bla bla bla.
Tumblr media
Now, O-kiku is inspired by the history of Banchō Sarayashiki (The Dish Mansion at Banchō / 番町皿屋敷 ) that tells that once there was a beautiful servant named Okiku. She worked for the samurai Aoyama Tessan. Okiku often refused his amorous advances, so he tricked her into believing that she had carelessly lost one of the family's ten precious delft plates. Such a crime would normally result in her death. In a frenzy, she counted and recounted the nine plates many times. However, she could not find the tenth and went to Aoyama in guilty tears. The samurai offered to overlook the matter if she finally became his lover, but again she refused. Enraged, Aoyama threw her down a well to her death. It is said that Okiku became an Onryō who tormented her murderer by counting to nine and then making a terrible shriek to represent the missing tenth plate – or perhaps she had tormented herself and was still trying to find the tenth plate but cried out in agony when she never could. In some versions of the story, this torment continued until an exorcist or neighbor shouted "ten" in a loud voice at the end of her count. Her ghost, finally relieved that someone had found the plate for her, haunted the samurai no more.
In some versions of the tale, Okiku is a maid who incurs her mistress' jealousy. Her mistress breaks one of dishes that Okiku is responsible for and Okiku commits suicide. Similar to the other versions, her ghost is heard counting the plates, but her mistress goes insane and dies.
Did you notice the same name, that in her first apparition she is holding a plate and that she refuses someone who's looking for her to be his lover? Hmmm.
7. Extras.
These are just mentions so I'll compilate them here.
⦁ Zoro's name in Wano is Zorojuro, which sounds a lot like Sanjuro, the name of the protagonist from another samurai movie called Yojimbo (which probably Zoro got his personality from); casually made by the same director from The seven samurais, and a lot more movies about these warriors, Akira Kurosawa.
⦁ It's possible that Shuusui is based on, it is said to be, the best sword ever made by Masamune Ozaki, called Honjo Masamune. I think this sword was "stolen" and is still lost.
⦁ Zoro's way of seeing the world is absolutely based on Miyamoto Musashi's lessons writen on his book Go Rin no Sho (The Book of Five Rings/ 五輪書). Not only that, Musashi felt that he won his duels not because he had mastered the strategy, but because he was stronger, prepared or just lucky... we all know Zoro likes to leave all to luck.
⦁ Vivi calls Zoro "mr. Bushido". Bushidō (武士道) is a strict and particular ethical code to which many samurai gave their lives, which demanded loyalty and honor until death. If a samurai failed to maintain his honor, he could recover it by practicing seppuku.
⦁ O-Tama saying that is a disgrace for a warrior to feel hunger is also said in The Seven Samurais.
⦁ The Gorōsei (The Five Elders / 五老星) the leaders of the World Government and, as such, the world's rulers and the highest authority only below Im, are based on The Council of the Five Regents, or council of the five great elders (go-tairō / 五大老). This was a council formed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to govern Japan instead of his son, Hideyori, until he came of age. Hideyoshi chose his five most powerful daimyō for this task: Ukita Hideie, Maeda Toshiie, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Mōri Terumoto and Tokugawa Ieyasu.  With the creation of the council formed by five people, Hideyoshi hoped that the different components of the same one would be balanced, preventing that none of them took control of the power. However, almost immediately upon the death of Hideyoshi in 1598, the regents were divided into two groups: Tokugawa on the one hand, and the other four on the other. The war, however, did not begin until the mid-1600s, ending the same year at the Battle of Sekigahara, where a difficult peace was agreed upon that left Hideyori alive and in control of Osaka Castle.
⦁ It was said that Miyamoto Musashi, the most famous samurai of all time, could win any duel with one look. Ehem... Haoshoku haki?
⦁ The Iaidō (居合道) is a Japanese martial art related to the unsheathing and sheathing of the katana. It was practiced by the samurai, especially in the Edo period. These techniques arise mainly to be able to attack or defend at the same time that it was unsheathed, beginning therefore the confrontation with the weapon still in the saya (sheath) and unsheathing with the appropriate speed to attack or counterattack the opponent without giving him time to react. The main idea of Iaidō is to be able to react correctly to any unexpected situation. The first letter 'I' has as a translation of its ideogram the meaning of Spirit, Being, Will and also Intention, therefore, decomposing the term Iaidō we find its philosophical meaning as "the path of the harmony of the Being or the path of union of the spirit "('I' is spirit, 'ai' unite or harmony, and the suffix 'dō' way). I don't know about you but it reminds me a bit of the meaning of Wado Ichimonji (Straight Road of the Harmony / 和道一文字); of course not ignoring that this style is used sometimes in the serie.
⦁ In the second point "the Kitetsu", I also mentioned that there was a certain time in Japan when Tokugawa Ieyasu banned muramasa's swords around the country. Well, in chapter 926 we were shown that civilians couldn't carry weapons because that would be a clear statement of rebellion, just saying.
⦁ Ishho is based more in a Sōhei (Warrior monk / 僧兵) than in a Samurai.
⦁ Even when Miyamoto Musashi was known for fighting with 2 Bokken, he had an actual sword. The Tsuba of this sword, now in the Art Musseum of Fukuoka, is a little bit similar to Wado Ichimonji's tsuba.
⦁ Shimotsuki Yasuie or better known as Tonoyasu or Yasu, the happy man from Wano that lives in Ebisu, was shown to be based on the Shōgun mentioned in the second point, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The most famous Shōgun in the story of Japan.
⦁ Gyukimaru on Oihagi Bridge is based on Saitō Musashibō Benkei (西塔 武 蔵 坊 弁 慶 1155 - 1189), popularly called Benkei (弁 慶), Was a Sōhei who was under the orders of the samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He is generally presented as a man of great stature, very strong and loyal, and is one of the favorite characters of Japanese folklore. Tells the story that Benkei would have been located on the bridge Gojo in Kyoto, where he challenged each warrior who passed, taking the sword of their defeated opponents, reaching a total of about 999 swords. In his 1000th duel, Benkei was defeated by Minamoto no Yoshitsune, son of the warlord Minamoto no Yoshitomo. Therefore, he became a warrior of Yoshitsune and fought alongside him in the Genpei war against the Taira clan. Curious, don't you think?
⦁ The relationship between O-kiku/Kikunojo and Kin’emon implies that they’re very close, we can see it in their flashbacks and even when they reunite, however, if we look at things in a more... real life way, we can say that their relationship is, or was, influenced by Shudô (衆道 ). Shudô was a samurai custom in which adult samurai engaged in pederastic relationships with younger samurai. This custom is most prominently seen, or discussed, in the Sengoku and Edo periods. The older man in the relationship, known as the nenja (念者), and the younger man, known by a variety of terms including wakashû (若衆), formed a close, tight personal relationship with one another. A nenja typically engaged in such relationships with only one wakashû at a time, and vice versa. Though much discussion today, based in modern/Western social mores about homosexual relationships, focus strongly on the homosexual sexual acts involved in the relationship, Shudô relationships went beyond this, and were strong personal and sentimental or emotional relationships, which involved as well strong elements of mentorship. Mentorship and training in the "warrior" lifestyle and values of the samurai was a major element of the relationship.
This is all I have so If there's something I missed please let me know, thanks for reading.

pt. 3
i mentioned this in the last part, but i used muroran as basis for veilstone, not abashiri. actually, if you want my opinion, i think shari, hokkaido, is a better depiction of veilstone than abashiri. mostly, i used muroran bc i could find pictures there that were more than just boat-icebreaker-drift ice-boat. abashiri is cold. and full of drift ice. if you need context, it’s level with toronto, canada. a pretty cold place to live. muroran is further south, and it’s also a port city, so i jus used that.
shari looks nicer, but it’s more into the hook of hokkaido (that piece on sinnoh map that jutts out right below battle zone) and not nestled into the mountains, so. mostly it was out.
makino’s cafe/bar is based on the diner in veilstone. so, walk in, counter bar to your left, tables to your right, possibly a happiny underfoot carrying trays of food.
but, compared to the more rustic and colored veilstone, i wanted to depict more of hokkaido city here. so, more rundown, rusted due to sea breeze, older things without much repair. passable, sure, for daily life. but new and extravagant? no. far from.
if makino is so close with luffy, how come she doesn’t know sabo?
simple. she’s not close with luffy. makino has a fulltime job running a diner in veilstone, sinnoh. luffy grew up on the sevii islands, kanto. when he was in sinnoh, he was training with shanks. yeah, sure, they would come by for food, and makino is good friends with shanks, so of course she and luffy have a relationship. but, also at this point where shanks began to bring luffy around, instead of teaching him out in nowhere, sevii islands, they began to keep things secret. luffy was here “just visiting” to anyone who asks, but they wouldn’t seen him much around, not in the isolation shanks trained him in. also also at this point, because i derailed that sentence completely, ace and sabo were already out traveling. it just never came up. makino is friendly with luffy, she knows luffy, but she doesn’t know him, not really.
pokemon hunters is another anime concept i wanted to use, again to make the story more gritty. no evil teams here with world-domination plots, just poachers. pretty standard. still awful, especially if they’re poaching people, now, but nothing as wide-scale as team galactic.
i had so much fun writing ship captain jinbe. i wished i got more of a chance to write his crew, too. at this point i think i had just caught up reading blackbird by milo, and i was hooked on the idea of biker fishman gang and leader jinbe, so i adapted it into ship crew here. praline is there, yes. she’s badass. i said so, you heard it here.
i talked a lot with my big bang partner, and we eventually decided jinbe’s a mix of hoenn and sinnoh descent. so, darker skin, almost polynesian, from hoenn’s more pacific island vibe. dark, curly hair. i drew a picture once? oh, here it is. jus a little sketch. he probably actually comes from hoenn, but he does cargo runs throughout sinnoh now. [i should probably say around, since there arent rly canals thru sinnoh?]
regarding law’s map error, i really jus wanted to reference flower paradise. of course the map he got was a tourist version, so of course it’s gonna include the magical pathway connecting the sinnoh league to an island of flowers. but it doesn’t actually exist, or if it does, it’s not always there, since they sail through the space with ease. just another fun easter egg.
the marsh scene was another i’ve known i wanted since the beginning. i had so much fun drawing the map for it. i actually based the scenes entirely off the map, so while i knew the general direction i wanted it to go in, and that they would run into sabo, the part about wandering into the rain and encountering volcarona spawned while marking the map. crazy how things work, huh?
i think i made the chase move a little too fast, so most of the time out of their 12 hr limit is spent after departing from the marsh, wandering thru route 212. don get me wrong, the marsh scene spans over the course of hours, but its still less time from leaving the ship to leaving sabo than it is to get back to the ship.
the aegislash scene is the first one i conceptualized, of the marsh scene series. introducing law’s team was strategic, especially once i revealed luffy only had four pokemon. it was always meant to be a readers gamble how many law had. at the end of part 3, it’s pretty easy to gauge how many, but still, the surprise of the sixth pokemon in pt 4 is something im still proud of c:
anyway, yes, the first sense of real danger. poachers have no qualms in using their pokemon to harm other people. they’re there for the money, which they get from capturing and caging rare pokemon. who cares if they hurt a few people along the way? who cares if they brutalize them to take a particular pokemon, a-la mr. cleffa sir? law reacts to this very quickly, in part because he’s used to it, as explained in tragic backstory number 2, right behind one-brother-dies-and-the-other-runs-away from protag #2.
actually, i guess the first danger was the wild kadabra, but this is the one in which someone gets hurt! . . . or, worse-hurt, because law’s scratch doesn’t count. luffy’s gash in his shoulder? that’s a big injury. especially when they can’t just stop to treat it, especially when law still has blood on his face from it, especially when they have to go right back to running around the marsh.
and then sabo appears!! i lied, this was the first marsh scene. i drabble-wrote it in my series-of-drabbles-to-add-to-the-outline before i made pt 3′s outline, and then wrote it for real. the aegislash-being-badass-therefore-law-also-by-proxy was the second. one of the first sentences i ever wrote for tether was law realizing the face from luffy’s picture was right before his eyes.
so why do the hunters ignore luffy calling for sabo while running away?
yes, why the no consequences? i realized at this point they were too far away to hear and law too out of it (its law’s pov, still) to figure what they were saying, to i had to play it off. it’s another scene where i almost wrote a few paragraphs from a different perspective [the other two were the tsuru-caesar confrontation and the mr. cleffa dude ft. sabo scene, both of which i had to expand upon by talking, instead of a flashback to show it. i rly went full soul-eater approach here, huh? explaining everything through present means. well. save for law’s backstory, but that’s about the only thing.] but decided not to in the end.
here’s how the scene plays out, full disclosure. law and luffy spot the two hunters. a third person, sabo comes into view. the hunters tell sabo the situation, that they were being chased. law recognizes sabo, luffy does too, and calls out to him, loudly. this causes the hunters to panic, and they tell sabo, there, there’s the people chasing after us. law figures sabo has some secret reason for posing as a hunter and pulls luffy again out of view, not wanting to give him away. all three hunters take off running in the opposite direction. luffy calls out for sabo again, and sabo turns to question the other two, asking which pokemon they stole that was named ‘sabo’. he has a fake name, obviously. they don’t know he’s sabo. before they can figure it out, he derails the topic. but then he slips crossed fingers behind his back at the same time, signaling silently to luffy, who stops calling out.
so, tldr, sabo’s not using his real name while with the hunters and is smart enough to cover his ass from luffy’s mistake.
i wanted law carrying luffy, on their way down the route, to the stormclouds, and i’m pretty sure the one reason i didnt go thru with it is because law’s backpack. and, y’know, luffy being caked in mud.
okay, do. panic attack time. ptsd time. a mix of both, ig. whatever you wanna call it. originally, this scene was going to be a bit different, and happen way earlier in the story. it didnt bc of sinnoh’s lack of fire types [there are only 2 i think, 2 lines i mean, so like 5] and the fact that ace’s team featured none of them. and then i thought, oh, i’ll jus make the same thing happen w sabo, except none of sabo’s team were one of them as well.
originally, it was going to be that law/lu encounter a clan of a specific type of wild fire pokemon. i think for the longest time it was talonflame, not sure anymore. anyway, so it was gonna go that luffy recognizes ace’s former pokemon outta the bunch, and they recognize lu as well, and the two reunite and all that jazz, and meanwhile law has his attack bc the group they encounter are one of the pokemon that tormented him in alola.
and, nope, now i remember why it didnt happen. as much as i hate dof, i had to craft a team for him for plot purposes, and that ended up being a bug team to go w the whole string motif. the problem was i had this scene planned for a looooong time, and it needed to be w a fire type, one of ace’s pokemon. except there are like no fire/bug pokemon, except for volcarona, who wasn’t on ace’s already-planned team at this point. i debated for foreeeeever and finally decided to screw it, and i made it sabo’s unova pokemon. so, instead of getting a unova dragon, in the land of dragons unova, sabo gets a volcarona and ace a darmanitan. all for plot purposes. no sense here. none at all.
[not that it matters, since sabo morphs into a fire trainer anyway after ace dies]
so, after i decided it would be sabos pokemon, the point came back to how they would encounter it. no hordes of wild volcarona in sinnoh. i sadly had to scrap the idea. this is what i came up with instead: volcarona coming to luffy to deliver a letter, and scarring law in the process.
Law has a chocolate bar, because he’s ten and anxious and chocolate seemed good at the time.
-aka my favorite line of the whole entire story!!!
and then law’s backstory time. so!!! for the longest time i was torn between setting the story in sinnoh or alola. this was my big compromise. i wrote a draft-outline for law’s alola backstory before i wrote a real outline for tether as a whole. this was the first part of the story i really wrote. i was done with it before i started pt 1, because i wanted to outline before i started writing.
the thing abt law is that his life is so much of a tragedy. oda writes it so well, to the point where you’re thinking this can’t get any worse and then it gets worse, every time. i wanted to mimic that here. i didn’t do it justice, but i at least tried.
law’s life is filled with mistrust. his whole village dies, he nearly does as well, and so he packs up and runs away, and hides his one pokemon abra because he’s not a registered trainer and he refuses to abandon abra so theres mistrust towards everyone who can turn him in, and everyone who didnt care enough to help with the water crisis. he’s done with sinnoh. so he spends a bit holed up in a library, and once he reads about alola, he’s sold. he’s so mistrustful it’s not a matter of ‘anywhere is better than sinnoh’, its a matter of ‘i can’t end up in another place just like this’. alola is the solution.
except, he’s still mistrustful. so he hides abra, and he hides his money, and he doesn’t speak with anyone, and he leaves the city as soon as he can. he doesn’t know the rules of this place, but abra is all he has. he can’t lose abra. and then things go wrong.
because he’s out of sinnoh, but alola is different. he’s ten, and he’s never had a real pokemon battle, and all the wild pokemon of alola are too eager. he’s ten, and a pangoro attacks and he loses all his supplies on his very first day, because abra’s too exhausted to teleport them away this time. [in hindsight, i did a really bad continuity error here, throughout the entire flashback. it’s thru law’s eyes, so i describe the pokemon he doesn’t know about, and yet sometimes i name the pokemon he really shouldn’t know about. my bad.]
he’s ten, and the only food he finds is being guarded by a giant sumo crab, so he crawls to the other side of the beach and falls asleep on the sand, hungry. he’s ten, and he’s living off berries because money is only so good when you can exchange it, and he’s far away from civilization. he’s ten, and he spends the very last of his money on money for abra, for his only pokemon and his only ally, because going to a pokemon center would mean being seen and asking for a license to verify and its too risky, he can’t risk it.
he’s ten, and he’s hungry, and he has nothing but the abra clutched in his arms and his ripped clothes clinging to his body, and he witnesses a murder. and they catch him in the act, and then he’s stuck, because he shouldn’t have a pokemon so young, and he’s a witness to a crime, and too quickly he’s in a very bad position.
he’s ten, and to keep abra alive, he joins a gang in alola.
he’s ten, and he’s blackmailed into working or risking abra being taken away. he’s ten, and he has morals, and there’s some tasks he won’t do, but the family boss punishes him for it, harshly. he stops having morals. it wouldn’t do him good here.
law turns eleven, and suddenly gang tasks involve pokemon battles. law’s eleven, and doflamingo trains law himself, beating the weakness out of him, burning him, scarring him, terrorizing him because he can, and because law can’t refuse.
law’s eleven when he realizes his picture-perfect alola was nothing but an illusion, because the lack of monopolies and corporations and factories actually had nothing to do with how much the natives cared about their own, or cared at all, about anything. just because alola didn’t have a pokemon league didn’t mean it wasn’t a bad place to be.
he’s eleven when he meets corazon, and finally, finally, gets a breath of fresh air, gets a taste of a person who isn’t there to ridicule him or abuse him. he’s eleven when he meets his first real friend since his sister died, meets someone that finally treats him like a human being. and it doesnt matter that he’s doflamingo’s brother, because he’s kind to law.
law’s eleven and corazon works to repair the damage done by the gang, little by little. he gets law out on an island challenge, and he wanders through melemele and akala and meets kind people and has fun and experiences the real alola. and he realizes, somewhere along the way, that he never wants to go back to the family ever again.
law’s eleven when he realizes he has no choice. because he belongs to doflamingo, because he has to skip out on ula’ula to accomplish a task for the family, because corazon sits there and lets it happen.
law’s eleven when he’s given a pokemon egg, and when he’s given hope.
corazon was going to take care of everything. he was going to get them out, safely. they were going to rescue a captive pokemon. law was going to be free. law was never going to be hurt by the family again.
except, that’s not how it goes. corazon dies. corazon’s pokemon are tortured in order to lure law out. corazon’s pokemon all die for him and law has no option left but to run with all his might, all the way from one tip of ula’ula to the other. and then, because he can’t trust anyone, anyone, law runs away into a desert with no supplies to speak of.
law’s eleven when he comes face to face with the most temperamental tapu in the alola region, and even with all he’s been through, it’s the most scared he’s even been in his entire life. and then, when he comes to, he finds himself stranded in the kalos region. he’s eleven. he goes through all of this and he’s not even a teenager yet.
so, backing up just a bit, you can see how seeing a volcarona is going to invoke some rather strong emotions in law. he panics. he passes out. luffy puts volcarona away, because me might be oblivious on a lot of things, but he can understand the pure terror in law’s eyes.
alright, what else. the letter. of course luffy disavows the letter, he’s luffy, he can’t follow a plan to save his life.

613-614: "Showing Off His Techniques! Zoro's Formidable One Sword Style!" and "To Save Her Friends! Mocha Runs at the Risk of Her Life!"
Tumblr media
I feel like by the time Luffy finds Caesar, his rage will have reached critical mass.
The best actor awards in episodes 613 and 614 obviously go to Zoro and Chopper. Best supporting actors must also be given credit and the plaudits go to Tashigi and little Mocha.
From a narrative standpoint, I’d say these episodes continue the “tying up loose ends” theme from the last two. But there’s also a decent chunk of character development here, especially from Zoro in 613.
Cuz You’re My Bro, Bro.
Tumblr media
The action picked up with Sanji leading his G5 Fans out of the Biscuit Room and away from “Harpy-chan”. Onward they charged to serve the noblest of causes: impressing Nami and Robin by saving the kids!
The G5 Fans had a teeny problem, though. Why didn’t Sanji, their saviour, help out earlier when Monet was chewing through shoulders?
Sanji told them straight. “Don’t be dumb. I don’t kick women.”
A G5 dude said what we all probably thought, “Then what would you do in a life or death situation?”
Again, Sanji told them straight. “I’d choose death.”
At this point I would normally insert the man blinking gif, but at least I have confirmation that Sanji hasn’t changed that much over the timeskip. It is dumb that he would never fight back (and dangerous, if you remember Kalifa). Also, not a good idea to inform the Marines of your major weakness. Still, it’s a huge part of Sanji’s character, will likely never go away, and as long as he doesn’t endanger another Strawhat by refusing to fight a lady, I guess I’ll just accept it.
The G5 Dudes were surprised to hear this from Sanji. These Strawhats were all so different, even though they work in the same pirate group. That pirate hunter guy, Zoro. He looked like he’d chop up anyone without mercy!
That comment made Sanji laugh. “Surprisingly, he has a soft side too. He’ll find a way out. You can count on him. Don’t worry. And don’t worry about Tashigi-chan, either.”
“You can count on him.”
There you have it, folks. Proof that, even though they rag on each other constantly, it’s more like two really close guys bickering and bantering back and forth, rather than actual dislike. I never ever believed they disliked each other. They just love bickering and noising each other up. Plus, all the bickering pushes them to achieve. Zoro’s success drives Sanji to be better and vice versa.
And Sanji does not dismiss Tashigi either, which is nice. Sanji acknowledged Zoro’s strength by saying, “Yeah, he’ll find a way out.” He also did the same for Tashigi. That could be evidence for the argument that Sanji does not view women as inferior. He’s just an old-fashioned, chivalrous type who feels like must protect women.
Which leads us neatly on to Zoro.
The Jury’s out on This One. Or Is It?
Tumblr media
Back in the Biscuit Room, Zoro and Tashigi were already butting heads. Zoro insisted he didn’t need Tashigi’s help.
She countered with, “You think whatever you want”.
Zoro shot back with, “you want me to take care of you first, since I’m a pirate, Marine soldier girl?”
And Tashigi revealed what she thought was the root of Zoro’s problem with Monet. “You can’t do that. You are not going to cut me or that woman.”
She believes Zoro looks down on her because she’s a woman.
I’m not sure about that, to be honest. I think Zoro’s better than that. And here’s why.
Tashigi recalled her first encounter with Zoro way back in Loguetown. She was defeated by him then and angrily asked why he wouldn’t finish her, Mortal Kombat style. “Is it because I’m a woman? It’s humiliating that you won’t fight seriously in a game played in earnest just because men are physically stronger than women! I’m sure you don’t understand the feeling that I wish I was born a boy. I don’t carry a sword for pleasure.”
Leaving aside the possibility that Tashigi might one day pay Ivan-san a visit, as a female swordsman and Marine captain, she has obviously come up against the roadblock of sexism time and again. If someone looks down on her, it’s because of that.
I do think Zoro was being honest when he said the reason he couldn’t fight her was because she reminded him of his friend who had died. I think he was genuinely spooked back then.
But Tashigi didn’t believe him. “You view women as inferior. You don’t really try to fight us. You won’t kill us. You might not lose but you won’t win against Monet, either.” She basically said that if she let Monet go after her men, there would be carnage. Which was true.
Zoro said, “Are you looking down on me?”
Tashigi’s reply was a blunt, “Yes.”
“Fine. Do what you want.” Zoro sheathed his swords. “My duty is to keep her again from my friends too. All I have to do is block that path.”
What I think happened here is that Zoro thought, “Fine. I’ll let you handle this and I’ll see how you go.” Not in a patronising way. More like a “big brother” or “senpai” role. Kind of like how he is with Chopper and Usopp and Nami, the slightly weaker members of the crew. He’ll let them do their thing, but if he has to step in for their safety, he will do so without hesitation.
Zoro knows he’s the stronger swordsman here, but did not rub that in Tashigi’s face. He sat back and thought, “Good. You’ve improved a lot since Loguetown. You do have some fighting spirit, after all. Fine, you take this and if I need to, I’ll step in, but only if it gets really bad.”
And that’s pretty much how the fight panned out.
Were These Manga Panels? (Because They’re Awesome)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was good to see that Tashigi’s confidence has grown. She snapped back at Zoro. Her fight with Monet confirms she has learned haki. (Probably a must for higher ranking officers in the New World.) She is tough, determined and strategic as she would not let go even when Monet was munching her shoulder. Nom, nom, nom.
But what the fight with Monet also confirmed is that if a logia user is fast enough, bog-standard haki will not cut it. I’m actually cool with that because it means Luffy won’t be able to just blitz everyone with Conqueror’s Haki (I know it only works on fodder but still, you know how I like a bit of peril in plot.) This also bodes well for the Smoker fight. Vergo is strong in the way of Haki but Smoker is a fast, tricky Logia type. Should be a good fight, when we get to see the end of it.
The speed differential meant Monet gained the upper hand. The way she gnawed on Tashigi’s shoulder was savage.
This is when Zoro thought, “Okay. Enough. Big brother has seen enough of Tashigi being bullied.”
Even unsheathing his swords, Zoro does damage. (The warning cut on Monet’s face should have been her cue to scarper.)
Still, Zoro would never, ever admit that he likes to help out anyone because that would ruin his pirate-hunter image. So he shit-talked Tashigi a bit. “You talk big but you took so much time. Time’s up. I have to go now.”
And to Monet, he said, “When you thought you couldn’t beat me, you should have run. Of course there are things I don’t wanna cut. But let me ask you something. Have you ever seen a fierce animal you were sure would never bite? Because I haven’t.”
The grey filter descended. Everything was in slow motion. Monet could not move.
Then, with his one-sword style: Great Dragon Shock, Zoro literally ripped Monet a new one.
Honestly, the Zoro and Tashigi fight was so damned savage. There was Monet, lying on the ground in two pieces, twitching and flailing and freaking out because she could no longer control her body (nightmare fuel) and Zoro wise-cracking, like, “Are you two happy now?” xD
And do you know what? Zoro didn’t even use haki. If he had, Monet would probably be dead.
But Monet did get up and tried to strike again - and this time, Tashigi was the one to finish her off. (Laws of shounen. Women have to fight women. The trope was so close to being subverted!)
Of course, Tashigi ragged on Zoro for not killing Monet. “You are like that, after all! You can’t fight seriously against women.”
Nah... I don’t think it’s that, exactly. think Sanji’s right about Zoro. He does have a softer side. But it’s not like Sanji’s, in that he wants to protect women. Zoro just likes to help out deserving people who are not as strong as him. Secretly, though, while maintaining his surly demeanor.  And maybe he just doesn’t like killing all that much. If they’re a good opponent, you can fight them again someday, right? Why waste them?
YMMV, of course, and I don’t mind if anyone disagrees. I can see the evidence for the other side too.
And, of course, Tashigi collapsed from her injuries and Zoro had to lift her out of the Biscuit Room. Just as well, really, because the gas was leaking in and Zoro has no sense of direction. I think this is a new record for Zoro: getting lost in a round room with two doors.
How sweet was that little scene with Tashigi geeking out over Shisui, though?
I think from now on, Zoro and Tashigi will be secret buddies. :)
IT’S SAD CHOPPER, NOOOOOOOO... ;_;
Tumblr media
I love Chopper. Ever since I learned about his past back on Drum Island, I have had a major soft spot for Chopper. Fun fact: I own a Chopper key topper, a Chopper roll-up pencil case and a giant Chopper mug I drink coffee from every morning without fail. You could say I am a Chopper fan.
I like his honesty, his cleverness and his kindness. Cleverness is not a rare commodity in scientists at Caesar’s level. But kindness and honesty? Those are first edition shiny Charizard rare qualities.
And I’m gonna frame this bit of discussion of Chopper by comparing him with Caesar. Because Caesar has said the following phrase several times this arc, to the point it stood out to me: “I will treat you at any cost.”
Every time I heard him say that, I was like, “Nice significant omission, Caesar. You’ll treat them with your crazy drugs at any cost. You’ll treat them with that poisoned candy at any cost. You will continue your “treatments” at any cost.” Another sugar-coated lie with a basis in truth. The sort Caesar specialises in.
I was not aware of the actual cost until now.
The morality bar has officially given up and gone home. It’s crying on the sofa now because it can’t deal with Caesar anymore. (@infriga That human garbage comment... Oda is not wrong there. xD)
Mocha Regrets Doing The Chili Pepper Challenge
Tumblr media
The action in 614 picked up with Robin and Chopper teaming up to restrain and sedate children. Not in a Nurse Ratchet way. They were helping.
The kids still running free were being held back by Nami and Mocha. Well, Nami tried to hold them back without hurting them (which is nigh impossible with her weather skill set) and Mocha ran with the candy.
Inevitably, the giant kids were the real obstacle. One took a might swing and Nami and suddenly, Mocha was on her own. She ran to a crossroads, and then, like Gandalf at Moria, she was like, “I have no memory of this place.”
But the other kids did. Some looped round and cut her off.
Must admit, at this point I thinking, “Jeez, just let them have the damned candy and you can sedate them later. They’ve been dosed for years. One more won’t kill them.”
Because Mocha knew it was, in fact, the opposite, she decided to take one for the team and NECK THE ENTIRE LOT OF CANDY IN ONE GO.
Even I gasped at that one. That was a major, major overdose. Even Chopper had never seen anyone put away that quantity of drugs before. He was screaming at her to spit them out. He had told her what kind of drug it was! But Mocha hamstered them in her cheeks for a while and I thought, cool, she’ll hold them there until the kids are all sedated. Job done!
Nope. This is Oda we’re talking about.
He was about to engage Sad Chopper and Certain Death and I was not ready for them.
Chopper and Caesar Compared
Tumblr media
Remember when Chopper and Mocha were holding the door against the other kids? There was a bit of that conversation OP fans were not party to (Oda’s fave cutaway technique in action again).
Mocha asked Chopper if Caesar really was a bad person. He was always so lovely to them and gave them candy every day.
“Yes,” Chopper said. “That’s his trick. You kids are his test subjects. You were never sick from the beginning and your giant body is proof. I’ve heard turning people into giants has been a project underway for hundreds of years. No one has ever succeeded. This experiment is a doomed failure too. Caesar knows this. I suppose he’s just collecting data for his next attempt.”
Then poor, little Mocha asked a difficult question. “What’s going to happen to us?”
Chopper dropped the heavy truth bomb.
“You’re all gonna die. None of you will make it home. That candy is a deadly poison. It will destroy your body before you know it. The more you eat, you’ll crave more and the harder it’ll be for you to get away from Caesar. I sedated you already but from the side-effects from the candy... you’ll probably die before you can even become an adult.”
Ouch.
Huge, huge ouch.
Especially since Mocha had a short flashback where the kids all got together and promised to go out to sea when they were in their twenties and have an adventure. Once they got better and went home. ;_;
I mean, hefty truth bombs of that magnitude are not normally the way you’d deal with breaking such crushing news to kids. But that’s not Chopper’s way. He is kind and honest, almost to a fault. Plus, they were in a really highly-charged, difficult, life-or-death situation. The truth was probably the quickest way to impress on Mocha the seriousness of what was happening.
Chopper also hinted they might not die, “but only if you kids escape now. You’re not gonna die. We will save you all!” That glimmer of hope led to Mocha making a noble sacrifice for her friends. If she could show them what the candy did, they wouldn’t want to eat it. Then they’d want to go home, just like her.
But here’s the thing... Chopper told Mocha the truth. Even though it shook her to the core and distressed her deeply, it was the right thing to do and helped Mocha take difficult steps to improve her situation. Being carted away by Sanji and his G5 fans to a treatment room, Chopper said: “I will save you at any cost, Mocha!”
Chopper will do anything to save Mocha, which means getting her better, off the drugs and home to her parents.
This is in stark contrast to Caesar, who always said, “I will treat you at any cost.”
The treatment was the experimental drug and the cost was Mocha’s life.
Caesar wanted data to further his own ambitions.
Chopper’s motivations are entirely selfless.
Chopper for President.
Oh, and btw, Luffy punched his way out of the garbage pit. The haki use on the fodders and the “Do I have to repeat myself?” moment was badass.
Caesar, you’d better get a jar because you’ll need somewhere to put all your loose teeth.

Caesar has made Luffy so angry he tries punching through the fourth wall to find him.

Relationship headcanon with Aphrodite, Luffy, Rosalia, Sanji & Zoro
Tumblr media
I’m glad there are people interested in my OCs!😭💜
OCs quoted: Aphrodite Passionrouge & Dracule Rosalia
……..♦……..
Afrodite
Estar em um relacionamento com ela é uma benção (assim como milagre);
Ela seria o tipo de amante estoica, séria e aparentemente distante;
Algumas vezes parece que ela não se importa com você…
Se enganou completamente;
Embora ela não demostre abertamente seu afeto ela sabe ser carinhosa mesmo que não demonstre;
Algumas vezes ela deixa pequenos bilhetes citando o que ela mais ama em você e ainda com justificativas;
Se por acaso você conseguir ver um dos raros momentos em que ela sorri…
Considere-se no paraíso;
Sobre coisas que vocês podem fazer juntos não espere extravagâncias;
Ela prefere coisas simples, mas que tenha um significado especial para ambos;
Embora não pareça ela pode ser ciumenta facilmente;
Afrodite nunca demonstraria porque é muito orgulhosa e não quer causar uma cena;
Você precisa de um olhar afiado para perceber e quando você a confronta sobre ela estar com ciúmes ela nega até a morte o que é terrivelmente adorável;
Enfim, tenha um pouco de paciência com ela.
Luffy
Esse menino totalmente alheio a romance e todo esse tipo de coisas;
Noção nível zero nesse quesito;
Todos os “encontros” são programados por você embora no fim acabe se tornando uma festa com toda tripulação;
Como ele descobriu que você seria algo muito mais especial (não apenas um outro nakama) é um mistério;
Espere que ele te leve para muitas (encrencas) aventuras;
Se acostume com ele envolvendo seus membros de borracha ao redor de todo seu corpo;
Sempre carregue um capacete para se proteger quando ele te arremessa durante uma fuga quando vocês estão encrencados;
Treine seus sentidos ou ficará sem comida nas refeições;
Ele não é ciumento (acho que ele pensa que ciúmes é comida), mas sabe quando precisa te proteger;
Claramente você consegue até ouvir a voz dele gritando em sua mente ao imaginar se alguém tenta te ferir e ele já prepara algum de seus “Gomu Gomu no…” ataques.
Rosalia
Você encontrou um anjo;
Rosalia é simplesmente adorável!
Extremamente atenciosa, carinhosa e romântica!
Totalmente em PDA;
Ao mesmo tempo ela fica com ciúmes facilmente;
Pode ser fofo quando ela faz beicinho quando está com ciúmes, mas por favor não faça isso intencionalmente pois isso a machuca muito (e você vai ter que enfrentar um sermão de irmãos e um pai furiosos);
Gosta de poder aproveitar o máximo de tempo que vocês podem ter juntos (afinal já esqueceu sobre toda tripulação de Barba Branca?);
Sempre que estão em uma ilha ela quer aproveitar algum tempo apenas entre você e ela;
Em alto mar ela ama os momentos de afago;
Sanji
Outro anjo aqui…
Carinhoso, atencioso e seu guardião pessoal;
Puxando cadeiras para você se sentar, abrindo a porta para você;
Sinceramente esse homem é um perfeito cavalheiro e um guerreiro que irá lhe servir e proteger;
Teve um dia ruim e precisa de carinho e conforto? Ele está lá ao seu lado em segundos.
Precisa de ajuda para carregar seus pertences? Ele carregará o mundo para você!
Está estressado? As mãos dele são habilidosas além de cozinhar e ele lhe oferecerá uma massagem;
Está com fome? Ele desempenhará seu papel na tripulação e fará algo especial para você!
Ele está aqui para te amar e proteger;
Ao mesmo tempo é bastante ciumento e super protetor;
Se algo te ameaçar espere que suas pernas estejam mais quentes que o habitual antes de atingir seu agressor que será carbonizado além de ossos quebrados;
Você precisa apenas se acostumar e aproveitar estar em um relacionamento com ele.
Zoro
Zoro ficaria desconfortável no começo já que ele antes apenas se focava no seu treinamento e nada além;
Mas então você apareceu;
Esqueça o PDA;
Ele é ligeiramente um tsundere pois não sabe lidar com esse tipo de sentimento;
Levaria um tempo considerável para que se sinta confortável;
Ele prefere manter os momentos de afeto em privado;
Zoro também gosta de poder sentir seu calor contra ele pois isso o acalma;
Sobre romance ele não é dos melhores, mas se esforça;
120% protetor de você;
Embora não seja do ponto de vista 100% romântico ele ainda sim te protegeria;
Quem lhe ferir será feito em pedaços com o estilo santoryuu;
Ele também é um problemático de ciúmes: Ele é e ao mesmo tempo não é ciumento;
Ele não é muito ciumento em relação a outros homens;
Mas se isso envolve o cozinheiro ele se torna muito ciumento e possessivo sempre mantendo um braço ao seu redor;
Algumas vezes se não é o cozinheiro e alguém está te deixando desconfortável ele é uma fera;
Sempre manterá você a menos de um braço de distância para te manter em segurança.
……..♦……..
Aphrodite
Being in a relationship with her is a blessing (as well as a miracle);
She would be the kind of stoic lover, serious and seemingly distant;
Sometimes it seems like she doesn’t care about you …
You was completely mistaken;
Although she does not openly show her affection, she knows how to be affectionate even if she does not show it;
Sometimes she leaves little notes quoting what she loves most about you and with justifications;
If you happen to see one of the rare moments when she smiles …
Consider yourself in paradise;
About things you can do together don’t expect extravagance;
She prefers simple things, but one that has special meaning for both of you;
Though it may not seem she can be jealous easily;
Aphrodite would never show bc she is so proud and doesn’t want to cause a scene;
You need a sharp look to realize and when you confront her about her being jealous she denies to death what is terribly adorable;
Anyway, have a little patience with her.
Luffy
This boy totally oblivious to romance and all that kind of stuff;
Notion level zero in this regard;
All “dates” are programmed by you although in the end it becomes a party with the whole crew;
How he discovered that you would be something much more special (not just another nakama) is a mystery;
Expect it to take you on many (trouble) adventures;
Get used to him by wrapping his rubbery limbs around your entire body;
Always carry a helmet to protect yourself when it throws you during an escape when you are in trouble;
Train your senses or you will be without food at meals;
He’s not jealous (I think he thinks jealousy is food), but he knows when he needs to protect you;
Clearly you can even hear his voice screaming in your mind as you wonder if anyone tries to hurt you and he is already preparing some of his “Gomu Gomu no …” attacks.
Rosalia
You have found an angel;
Rosalia is simply adorable!
Extremely helpful, caring and romantic!
Fully in PDA;
At the same time she gets jealous easily;
It can be cute when she poutes when she’s jealous, but please don’t do it intentionally as it hurts her a lot (and you’ll have to face a sermon from angry brothers and father);
She likes to be able to enjoy as much time as you can have together (have you forgotten about all Whitebeard crew?);
Whenever they are on an island she wants to enjoy some time just between you and her;
At sea she loves the moments of cuddling;
If you enjoy reading feel honored to share the reading moments with her!
Otherwise you are privileged to be able to read the manuscripts of her own books!
If you are in a relationship with an angel like her, consider yourself in paradise.
Sanji
Another angel here …
Affectionate, considerate and your personal guardian;
Pulling chairs for you to sit, opening the door for you;
Honestly this man is a perfect gentleman and a warrior who will serve and protect you;
Have a bad day and need affection and comfort? He is there by your side in seconds.
Need help loading your belongings? He will carry the world for you!
You are stressed? His hands are skilled beyond cooking and he will offer you a massage;
Are you hungry? He will play his part in the crew and do something special for you!
He is here to love and protect you;
At the same time it is quite jealous and overprotective;
If something threatens you, expect your legs to be warmer than usual before hitting your attacker who will be charred beyond broken bones;
You just need to get used to and enjoy being in a relationship with him.
Zoro
Zoro would be uncomfortable at first since he only focused on his training before and nothing more;
But then you appeared;
Forget the PDA;
He is slightly tsundere because he can’t handle this kind of feeling;
It would take considerable time to make you feel comfortable;
He prefers to keep moments of affection private;
Zoro also likes being able to feel her warmth against him as it soothes him;
About romance he is not the best, but strives;
120% protector of you;
Although not 100% romantic, it would still protect you;
Anyone who hurts him will be torn to pieces with the santoryuu style;
He is also a jealous problematic: He is and at the same time not jealous;
He is not very jealous of other men;
But if it involves the cook he becomes very jealous and possessive always keeping an arm around him;
Sometimes if you are not the cook and someone is making you uncomfortable he is a beast;
It will always keep you less than an arm’s length away to keep you safe.
……..♦……..
Afrodita
Estar en una relación con ella es una bendición (y también un milagro);
Sería el tipo de amante estoico, serio y aparentemente distante;
A veces parece que a ella no le importas …
Estaba completamente equivocado;
Aunque no muestra abiertamente su afecto, sabe cómo ser afectuosa incluso si no lo muestra;
A veces deja pequeñas notas citando lo que más ama de ti y con justificaciones;
Si ves uno de los raros momentos en que ella sonríe …
Considérate en el paraíso;
Sobre las cosas que pueden hacer juntos no esperen extravagancia;
Ella prefiere las cosas simples, pero una que tiene un significado especial para ambos;
Aunque parezca que no puede ser celosa fácilmente;
Afrodita nunca mostraría por qué está tan orgullosa y no quiere causar una escena;
Necesitas una mirada aguda para darte cuenta y cuando te enfrentas a ella por estar celosa, ella niega a muerte lo que es terriblemente adorable;
De todos modos, ten un poco de paciencia con ella.
Luffy
Este chico totalmente ajeno al romance y todo ese tipo de cosas;
Noción de nivel cero en este sentido;
Todas las “fechas” son programadas por ti, aunque al final se convierte en una fiesta con toda la tripulación;
Cómo descubrió que serías algo mucho más especial (no solo otra nakama) es un misterio;
Espera que te lleve a muchas (problemas) aventuras;
Acostúmbrate a él envolviendo sus miembros elásticos alrededor de todo su cuerpo;
Siempre lleve un casco para protegerse cuando lo arroje durante un escape cuando esté en problemas;
Entrena tus sentidos o estarás sin comida en las comidas;
No está celoso (creo que piensa que los celos son comida), pero sabe cuándo necesita protegerte;
Claramente, incluso puedes escuchar su voz gritando en su mente mientras se pregunta si alguien intenta lastimarte y ya está preparando algunos de sus ataques “Gomu Gomu no …”.
Rosalía
Has encontrado un ángel;
Rosalía es simplemente adorable!
Extremadamente servicial, atento y romántico!
Completamente en PDA;
Al mismo tiempo ella se pone celosa fácilmente;
Puede ser lindo cuando hace pucheros cuando está celosa, pero por favor no lo hagas intencionalmente ya que le duele mucho (y tendrás que enfrentarte a un sermón de hermanos y padres enojados);
A ella le gusta poder disfrutar todo el tiempo que pueden pasar juntos (¿te has olvidado de todo el equipo de Barba Blanca?);
Cada vez que están en una isla, ella quiere disfrutar algún tiempo entre tú y ella;
En el mar ella ama los momentos de caricias;
Sanji
Otro ángel aquí …
Cariñoso, considerado y tu tutor personal;
Tirando de las sillas para que te sientes, abriéndote la puerta;
Honestamente, este hombre es un perfecto caballero y un guerrero que te servirá y protegerá;
¿Tienes un mal día y necesitas afecto y consuelo? Él está allí a tu lado en segundos.
¿Necesitas ayuda para cargar tus pertenencias? ¡Él llevará el mundo por ti!
¿Estás estresado? Sus manos son hábiles más allá de cocinar y te ofrecerá un masaje;
¿Esta con hambre? ¡Él hará su parte en el equipo y hará algo especial para ti!
Él está aquí para amarte y protegerte;
Al mismo tiempo es bastante celoso y sobreprotector;
Si algo te amenaza, espera que tus piernas estén más calientes de lo normal antes de golpear a tu atacante, que estará carbonizado más allá de los huesos rotos;
Solo necesitas acostumbrarte y disfrutar de estar en una relación con él.
Zoro
Zoro se sentiría incómodo al principio ya que solo se enfocó en su entrenamiento antes y nada más;
Pero entonces apareciste;
Olvídate de la PDA;
Es un poco tsundere porque no puede manejar este tipo de sentimiento;
Tomaría un tiempo considerable para que te sientas cómodo;
Prefiere mantener en privado los momentos de afecto;
A Zoro también le gusta poder sentir su calor contra él mientras lo calma;
Sobre el romance no es el mejor, pero se esfuerza;
120% de protector de ti;
Aunque no es 100% romántico, todavía te protegería;
Cualquiera que lo lastime será despedazado con el estilo santoryuu;
También es una problemática celosa: Él es y al mismo tiempo no es celoso;
Él no es muy celoso de otros hombres;
Pero si se trata del cocinero, se vuelve muy celoso y posesivo, siempre manteniendo un brazo alrededor de usted;
A veces, si no eres el cocinero y alguien te incomoda, es una bestia;
Siempre te mantendrá a menos de un brazo de distancia para mantenerte seguro.

in one piece, the women are always limited to side fights and being lesser villains. very rarely are they allowed to fight in close-range combat, instead using weapons that work from a distance. this is especially true of the women considered “beautiful,” making the writing and art lend themselves to sexist principles. in this essay i will
demonstrate how the potentially strong female characters being pushed to one side detracts from the story and weakens the writing and characterization overall.
We’ll start with discussing women in media as a whole. Writing women in media has always had some layer of sexism to it, whether it was punishing a woman for wanting the same thing as her male peers by belittling her, reducing her to the trope of being nothing more than a motivation to the main male character (often by “fridging” her), or inserting her into a romantic relationship that had nothing to do with the plot (furthering the idea that women in a fictional sphere must exist in some kind of romantic relationship, or at the very least be confined to a role like The Sister or The Mother). When female characters appear in cartoons, they are more often than not drawn and written as extremely feminine, while their male counterparts are allowed to be “neutral,” with no particularly masculine traits. More recently the idea of the “empowered” woman has come into play---the female heroine wears revealing clothing with feminine accessories, because she is a Strong Independent Woman who can dress how she wants, and her femininity is now her tool with which she attacks, all while being eye candy for a male audience. There is also the common trope (yet unnamed) where a female character is shown to be far more accomplished at a job or task than the main male character, but because he is the Chosen One, he overtakes her skills after a single training montage or with no training at all (see The Matrix and the Percy Jackson movie).
Another important facet of this “modern sexism” is that women are not allowed to fight, and when they are, they are limited to side battles and ranged combat (see the trope “Guys Smash, Girls Shoot”). This is a sharp turnaround in public taste from the equally sexist gratuitous violence against women, which not too long ago was everywhere (and more covertly still exists today on the set but off the cameras). This unnecessary hitting, threatening, and beating of women was more or less for men’s (vindictive) pleasure and somewhat reflected a society that accepted wives as property and thus allowed husbands to beat their wives, often backed up by laws. While I would argue that this current climate of a taboo against hitting women both in real life and on screen is much better than a climate of beating women, it is a different story when there is a legitimate fight happening. I’ll stick to fiction for this essay and keep real life discussions for another post.
The long and short of it is that if a woman (in fiction) is shown to be at least as strong and skilled as her male colleagues or opponents, there is no reason why she should be relegated to minor battles or no battles at all. This would not be a problem in and of itself if it did not happen so frequently, in all forms of media, to all women. Of course there are examples of media where women are allowed to have major battles, but because the majority of media does not let their female characters (if there are female characters at all) do this, I’m focusing on the problem at hand.
Let’s narrow our focus even more and zoom in on the main topic: One Piece. Oda is notorious for drawing all of his women he deems beautiful with the same body which he describes as “three circles and an X.” He also says in the same question that he gets complaints from his female audience and just ignores them. (I would be willing to bet that if you switched the heads around on the women in this colorspread, not counting Big Mom (who we’ll get to later), you wouldn’t be able to tell at first glance what was wrong). Oda, however, also refuses to let his female characters fight properly, much like other major stories out there.
All of these “beautiful” women in One Piece who get to fight use ranged weapons. Nami uses her Clima Tact, which allows her to create mirages and send weather-based attacks at others from a distance. Boa Hancock, touted as one of the strongest women in the world by virtue of being the only female Warlord, has been shown to kick her enemies, but more often uses her devil fruit to turn others to stone. Kalifa, a member of an elite force of the Government and likely trained since childhood, primarily uses her devil fruit (a soap/bubble ability) to disarm her opponents when she is shown fighting. Vivi used Peacock Slashers, a string of small blades, to lash out at opponents after disarming them with a distracting dance. Laki, from Shandora, used a bazooka-like weapon, and Perona wasn’t even physically present for her battle with Usopp, instead using a spiritual projection to intimidate him while planting bombs in his path. Even Robin, who technically uses her hands and feet to fight (when she gets to), attacks from a safe distance thanks to her ability. All of these women are either part of a team of villains who are set up to be some of the strongest foes yet, a powerful force in the world, and/or are main characters, yet all of them end up forced into minor battles, none of them are the leaders, and all use some kind of ranged weapon to fight.
There are rare exceptions to this, but the exceptions mostly apply to women considered “ugly”---in other words, not depicted with the “hot” hourglass figure standard of the women. When Alvida was introduced, she was considered so ugly it was laughable she would think of herself as the most beautiful woman in the world, and she was shown to be merciless with her spiked club. However, ever since she slimmed down into a standard One Piece beauty, she was never shown using her club again despite carrying it, and has not even been shown fighting, instead using her new ability to deflect all attacks. Miss Merry Christmas, a wrinkled middle-aged woman, was depicted as shrill, annoying, and mole-like, and she attacked Usopp and Chopper more directly by surprising them from under the ground and even dragging Usopp through crumbling walls to hurt him. Big Mom is probably the most prominent exception at the moment, as she uses her incredible size and strength to pummel entire cities to the ground, but even she has rarely been shown in actual combat, and the fight with her was abandoned altogether near the end of Whole Cake. Nami fought in more close combat when she had a baton, but has fought from a distance ever since Usopp gave her the Clima Tact. Tashigi, who uses a sword, has been shown attempting to fight, but was easily defeated in Loguetown, and was shot down verbally in Punk Hazard by nearly everyone she came across for being a weak woman (which in my opinion was entirely undeserved, but I digress). Finally, Koala was shown to be skilled at Fishman Karate, but has only been shown using it once, and hasn’t fought since then (to be fair, we haven’t seen her much at all since Dressrosa).
The only prominent situations where the beautiful women are allowed to participate in close range combat are in slapstick moments. Nami frequently slaps around her crewmates with punches and kicks, especially Brook and Luffy, and Hancock has often been shown throwing her grandmother out the window. However, the normal laws of anime fights don’t apply to slapstick---the wounds are never permanent and often disappear in the next scene, and no one brings it up again. The women who do end up in serious fights come out unscathed or at least never as damaged as the men do, preserving their unmarked beauty. This is shown even outside of battle; the women rarely have scars, for example, and even when Nami was sometimes shown to have a scar from trying to remove her tattoo, Oda has stopped drawing the scar since at least Skypiea. The rare moments where a woman can participate in a serious fight, close-range combat or not, are few and far between, especially in more recent chapters.
This pattern of pushing women into the sidelines when it comes to fights, even when they’re introduced as strong and smart, perpetuates sexist stereotyping that women are inherently weaker than men and are physically unable to deal with close-range combat, letting them fight without damaging their perfect beauty. While I am certainly not asking to bring back gratuitous violence against women, female characters who through their actions demonstrate time and time again they are strong and can be self-reliant are done a disservice when they are only ever allowed to fight other women (which in the narrative means the weaker members fight the weaker enemies) or male characters who are obviously meant to be the weak links of the group. Showing women coming out unscathed 90-100% of the time adds to the proof that their battles were against weaker enemies than the men’s, and sexualizes women further. “See? This woman can fight and come out still stunningly beautiful.”
Women using close-range weapons is not a bad thing by itself, just like a female character wearing makeup and being very feminine is not an inherently bad thing. However, when these things become a consistent pattern of all women across all media (or all female characters in a piece of media), they must be considered part of the whole problem of sexism instead of a stand-alone issue. And in this case, the whole problem of sexism in One Piece is that women are almost always treated as inherently weaker than men, even by the characters whose characterization shouldn’t allow for such sexism, such as Luffy or Zoro.
To summarize, women in One Piece, especially beautiful women, always being forced to fight the minor battles or no battles at all contributes to the problem of sexism in the story. It shows the viewer that the women in the world may be smarter than the men, but are never stronger, and if they are stronger, they will never stay stronger.

Little Bits and Pieces of Heaven
ONE PERFECT MOMENT
One-shot #: 7
Disclaimer:  One Piece (and its characters) belongs to Eiichiro Oda-sensei.
Reminder: I have no beta-reader. Any grammatical and spelling errors are solely mine.
Warning:  OOC possible. One shot. Song fic.
Rating: T
Note: Scenes are not necessarily happening while the lyrics are playing. My suggestion is to keep the song on a loop until you finish reading or you can just totally ignore it and just read the fic. TDs stands for tone dials. Italicized words are song lyrics.
Summary: The swordsman and the navigator share a moment with no pretenses.
I found a love for me Darling just dive right in And follow my lead…
It was Brook who brought the blasted tone dials on the Thousand Sunny after attending a music festival in a jovial island, where the Straw Hats momentarily docked to replenish their supply and stretch their legs.
Almost everyone was excited with their musician’s newest acquisition. Brook may have been a rock star during the crew’s separation but had overlooked (or deliberately overlooked) to bring any of his tone dials on board for the others to enjoy.
After a boisterous debate between the loud members of the crew, it was eventually decided to place the TDs inside the aquarium bar. And when said dials started playing, a hush fell over the rambunctious crew and even their high-spirited captain paused momentarily to listen to the melody.
 Brook was thrilled with his friends’ reactions right down to the bones (since he IS only bones after all). He had personally picked the songs recorded on the dials from the artists and musicians who were at the festival and thought his nakama might like it.
And like they did.
For the next days the door of the aquarium bar stayed open as the tone dials played all day long, filling every corner of the Thousand Sunny with different melodies.
Well I found a girl Beautiful and sweet I never knew you were the someone waiting for me…
Zoro’s ears grew accustomed to the sounds that were playing. He did not participate in the crew’s current fascination with the music. Each Mugiwara had his or her own favorite and depending on what is playing, the swordsman can distinguish who’s got their hands on the TDs.
That one particularly bouncy song playing all morning ‘til noon would be Luffy’s. Said captain got hooked on it so much that he played it over and over again, subjecting the crew to a humming marathon of that particular ditty as they go about their daily tasks.
Except him, of course.
Not more than once his ever attentive ears caught Usopp or Chopper humming theirs. Twice he heard Franky singing under his breath during dinner. Even that pathetic excuse of a cook was not excluded from the madness; crooning as he prepared their meals, his feet tapping in time with the music.
Though it seemed like Robin did not get caught up in the music craze, he stand to be corrected when he heard the dark-haired woman humming while tending to her flower bed as he secretly tried to nap under Nami’s mikan trees.
And the navigator was just as bad as the rest of them. When the Sunny was anchored for the night and everyone is asleep, he would hear the tone dials playing Nami’s favorite song.
'Cause we were just kids when we fell in love Not knowing what it was
For three consecutive nights, he kept seeing the navigator stealthily crossing the lawn deck to head to the aquarium bar. Her long, orange hair glinting under the moonlight that it easily caught his eye.
And for three consecutive nights, he would silently follow her to check what in the world she’s up to.
A brief glance at the porthole and he would find the same scene as the previous nights: the navigator sitting on the floor with an open bottle of wine, a glass on her hand, eyes closed, singing softly.
She was totally immersed with the melody that he decided not to bother her and simply chose to walk away, letting her be alone with her wine and her song.
I will not give you up this time
Before the week ended, Zoro—who thought he was resistant to any influences—succumbed unconsciously and found himself humming that certain song, much to his horror.
And it didn’t help that he can actually hear it as he made his way up the ladder of the crow’s nest to relieve Nami of her watch duty.
He wisely shut his mouth to refrain himself from humming again. If she finds out about it, he’ll never hear the end of it.
He approached the open trap door and peered inside. It was the same scene as with the aquarium bar. He noted the tone dials turntable lying on the crow’s nest’s floor along with a bottle of wine and one, unperturbed navigator.
But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own And in your eyes you're holding mine
Nami acknowledged his presence with a soft ‘hmmm’ and a slight tip of her head as she sipped her wine.
“That thing had been used too much,” he drawled as he made his way inside. Nami angled her head towards him, a smile pulling at the corners of her lips.
“It’s a wonder it hasn’t snapped in two,” Zoro continued. “Luffy’s already abused it a lot these past few days.”
“Debts and threats did the trick.” The orange-haired girl replied flippantly.
“And scheduled uses?”
Nami’s lips quirked a little at that. “Yep. Or Luffy will hog it all day.” He raised an eyebrow at her. Lately he noticed that her mood seemed to improve whenever she hears that song or whenever she hums it.
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms
“Well time to hit the sack, witch. It’s my shift now.”
“Just a few more minutes.”
“It’s already an hour past midnight. Don’t you need your beauty sleep or something?”
Nami laughed at that. “Gee, thanks for your concern. But I think I want to listen to this a little more.”
“You know me, always keeping an eye out after your well-being.”
That made the navigator laugh more. “Pun unintended?” She winked at him, half-teasingly and half acknowledging his scarred eye. “Of course I know Zoro,” she stated, tilting her head so she can stare at his face and see his reaction. “You always look out for me. It’s a nasty habit of yours.”
He smirked at her in agreement.
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
“Now run along swordsman,” she inclined her head towards the trap door; her soft, orange curls swaying with the movement. “I’m still good here, give me a few more minutes.” She switched the TDs on and her song started playing again.
Sighing, he decided to settle himself on the floor just inches away from where she was sitting. It would actually be nice to fall asleep near her surrounded with scents and sounds he can only associate with the navigator.
Placing his hands behind his head, “Just wake me up when you’re going down.” He muttered before closing his eye.
“Sure you don’t want some first?” Nami slid the wine bottle towards him. Zoro muttered a ‘no’ and mumbled something about ‘sake’ that she didn’t quite catch, before drifting off.
When you said you looked a mess,
Nami stole a glance at him, her pretty face lighting up in amusement when she saw what he was doing. It wasn’t really that surprising to her. Zoro must have heard the song a dozen times already, mostly from sticking his nose in her nightly business (of course she’s aware that he’s following and peeking), that it’s bound to affect him sooner or later.
He may not admit it. But apparently the usually stoic man got ensnared too by the crew’s current obsession, rather unconsciously. Because there he was, lips moving on his own accord in what one can classify as singing, albeit silently, hoping she wouldn’t notice.
But she did. She always does. Especially when it comes to him.
I whispered underneath my breath
She brought her knees to her chest and closed her eyes, breathing the salty sea air deeply. Resting her head on her knees, she basked in this rare moment where she has her music, her wine and her swordsman in one place as the Thousand Sunny bobbed lightly on the ocean.
But you heard it, Darling, you look perfect tonight
Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I'll share her home
A light breeze blew softly playing with the docked ships’ flags as they swayed back and forth in a steady rhythm. The night was still and the port silent as Zoro finally made his way towards where the Sunny was anchored.
The other Mugiwaras were still at the town’s pub drinking and eating to their hearts’ content. It was the perfect opportunity for the swordsman to catch some sleep without his rowdy crew mates to disturb him.
He left amidst Luffy, Usopp and Chopper dancing on the top of the table, chopsticks jammed in their nostrils as the whole bar drunkenly cheered them on.
With a bottle of sake in one hand Zoro ambled towards the ship, looking forward to some time alone with his drink and nap.
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets To carry love, to carry children of our own
There was that song again, randomly playing inside his head. He winced a little knowing that he will not be able to stop himself from humming that blasted ditty.
He blames Nami for this. He thought, taking a swig from his bottle before nonchalantly making his way up the ladder leading to the deck.
We are still kids, but we're so in love Fighting against all odds
He stilled for a moment before hoisting himself up on the deck. So that wasn’t all in his head. Halfway up the ship he realized the reason why he suddenly had the urge to hum it.
The song was playing from the Sunny.
Come to think of it, he hadn’t seen Nami in the bar earlier after dinner.
When he finally reached the railing, he stopped short to take in the scene before him.
Moonlight bathed the lawn deck of the Thousand Sunny, making the grass glimmer every now and then. The aquarium bar door was open and from inside, the tone dials were playing the one song that’s been plaguing him day and night. Everything was kind of surreal. Like inside a dream. In the midst of the deck, there was their orange-haired navigator. Her eyes were closed and a serene smile was on her face as she languidly twirled in circles in some sort of dance, her bare feet grazing the grass.
I know we'll be alright this time Darling, just hold my hand
Zoro leaned back against the railing and watched her with concealed amazement, sake momentarily forgotten and absently placed atop the railing.
It might be that to others the scene he was witnessing was kind of crazy…
But not to him.
This was Nami in her unimpeded; no walls up, no hindrances, free from the restrictions she imposed upon herself.
Nami just being the real Nami and not just the money loving cat thief.
This is her most open, her most vulnerable.
Be my girl, I'll be your man I see my future in your eyes
This is what she would’ve been if the pirate’s life did not manage to grasp her at such an early age. If she had grew up to led a normal life and enjoyed living it.
Maybe that’s the reason why she was so attached to the song. It brings back the lost childhood desires of the girl who grew up too quickly to survive the world.
Without a second thought, he pushed himself away from the railing to join her in one moment of openness.
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
She didn’t flinched when he suddenly enclosed her in his arms and he realized that she had been aware that he was watching her for some time.
Instead, she tilted her head to look at him and let out girlish laugh. She wrapped her arms around his neck, tiptoeing slightly. And his hold tightened around her waist.
When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
It wasn’t like he was intruding with her privacy by being there.
More so, if anyone should see this openness she rarely show, it should be him. The one who had understood who she really is right from the start.
I don't deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight
The skirt of her yellow dress brushed against his legs as they moved. He had forfeited his yukata in favor of a white t-shirt and was distinctly aware of Nami’s hands leisurely sliding up and down his shoulders and arms in a soothing gesture before entwining themselves around his neck again.
His eye studied her face carefully. She was always beautiful.
Even more so under the silvery moonlight that seemed to make her glow.
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
He rested his forehead against hers and her eyes closed to bask in this rare moment with him.
They swayed languorously in a sort of dance but not quite so. The soft ocean breeze blew, playing with the long orange strands of her hair, unfurling the intoxicating citrusy smell in them…
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
Zoro lifted a hand to tuck an errant lock behind her ear, letting it linger beside her cheek in the softest of caresses, the arm around her waist pulling her closer to him. A contented smile spread across the navigator’s lips as their eyes met.
No words where needed to confirm what they both know right from the start.
I have faith in what I see Now I know I have met an angel in person
She tilted her face so that her cheek was resting against his. He breathed deeply, taking in her scent as he turned his head to let his lips touch her face in lightest of kisses.
And she looks perfect
The world around them cease to exist. There was only them, the song and this extraordinary moment of tranquility where they both wore their hearts out in their sleeves.
I don't deserve this You look perfect tonight

A nakama’s birthday, the only thing that means on the Sunny is partying, lots of food and something more than likely ending up broken.
The celebration was a riot of color as it went on well into the night. Everyone dancing like they’d forgotten how to stand still, a little more hyped up than they should be but they didn’t care. Sanji was moving like his limbs were made of spaghetti and Luffy’s face was an epic picture of pure excitement while still somehow holding meet in his mouth. Usopp’s eyes ate up the scene like a kid in a candy store. The the overall feeling left him feeling rather giddy. & if he’s feeling giddy then he couldn’t even imagine how Anita might be right now. A party and all of Sanji’s delicious food that she could eat?
Usopp noticed everyone starting to gather on the deck of the ship. A large table with enough seats for everyone, a large stack of gifts neatly lined up as candles and balloons surrounded everyone. Watching Anita sit at the head of the table the sharpshooter runs off and comes back carrying an extremely large teddy bear, even bigger than Franky as he falls over but tries to keep his “cool factor” in tact. “Happy Birthday Anita~!”
🐻; birthday bear / @usxpp
All of this — the drinking, the noise, the smiling and fooling around — was more than she could have wished for.
Parties back home weren’t nearly so rambunctious, which was saying something considering she was a circus freak. Though what surprised and impressed her most might have been the size of their crew and their stamina; she’d never met a group of people capable of dragging a celebration on for this long. It was tiring, but not a second went by that she wasn’t enjoying herself.
Because despite leaving her family behind, she had a whole new one here to make her feel important. A whole day meant just for her, where people she cared for danced, sang badly and made food all because she had been born. She didn’t think it was a special day, but they gave her every reason to change her opinion.
Being the attention-seeker she was, she basked in her place at the table. Fortunately for them, the amount of attention she got and the fact that it was her crew giving it to her flustered her to the point of modesty — a rare feat, indeed.
The birthday girl was about to begin digging in again when something soft bapped at the back of her head. She jerked forward and nearly swallowed her fork, head lifting until her cheek was mashed against the arm of a gigantic teddy bear. A sudden gasp almost made the fork a deadly weapon for a second time, but she spit it out and got to her feet immediately.
Tumblr media
“IT’S HUGE!!” She didn’t mind that he might have stumbled a little, and was willing to forget that she even saw it in the first place. Not that it was hard to do when all of her attention was focused on the gift he had gotten her. How he succeeded in hiding it from her was beyond her, but she was no less grateful because of it.
And while she wanted to dive into its arms and snuggle the plush, she knew she ought to thank him first. Thanking people was still a struggle for her, but after several shots, a few whole glasses of booze and good food, she was feeling a little less selfish and a lot more willing to show her friends just how much she adored them.
With a pounce, she flung herself at Usopp and clung onto his front. “Thank you! I love it!”

Beware the sting of the Scorpion! This recap-view for Kyuranger's 3rd episode, also marks the end of February...
- Before I start, I need to state one important thing first! It just occured to me after watching episode 2 again... this show also feels like a Super Sentai version of "One Piece"! Not just from the theme of adventure from one place to another (in this case planets, instead of islands), but through its characters as well. Lucky might have had his name derived from Luke Skywalker, but it could also be a simple reference to Luffy. How could I have missed that? Spada the fighting chef is basically Sanji. Witty Hammy might feel similar to... Nami. Balance's personality is a mixture of Usopp's goofball and Brook's dandyness, while Naga Rei is a blend of Robin's silence and Chopper's naivety. Big robot Champ is basically a bull version of Franky. Hot-blooded Garu is... Zoro, and not just because they sound the same (duh?). And many other similarities. I might be overthinking this, but "One Piece" is being produced by TOEI Animation, and is still hugely popular. So it makes sense right? Okay, now that that's out of the way, carry on... - We get to see a glimpse of Champ's backstory in this episode. YAY! And hey, did Champ (who is a robot, unlike Balance, so he claims) just... dream? Wow, this bit easily reminds me of Zane from "The LEGO Ninjago" series. It also helps that Professor Anton (Tsuyoshi Ujiki), his creator even looks similar to Dr. Julien! His whole 'being in Robot Wrestling Championship' also reminds me of "Real Steel". I also just realized that Champ couldn't wear his Rebellion jacket properly due to his body size, hence why he hangs it on his right shoulder. On a side note, are the Kyurangers playing... pool? WOW. That's another ball reference! - Commander Xiao Long Bao debuts! He's obviously a Dragon, a Purple one, and I'm really digging his design. If you think we already have too many goofballs in form of Lucky, Balance, and Naga (basically due to him parroting other's expression), then you might need to bite your tongue. Don't expect a stern figure like Doggie Kruger of "Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger", or a wise compassionate one like Torin of "Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger", because Commander Xiao is easygoing, carefree, and well... can't seem to take things uhm, seriously. His cheesy/corny pun-tastic gags easily reminds me of Nariya Ookido (Samson Oak) from the new season of "Pocket Monsters"! At least Xiao's hillarious though (seriously, I'm chuckling like crazy with everything he does), and not annoying like Nariya. His voice actor Hiroshi Kamiya (the voice of Trafalgar Law in "One Piece", and Takashi Natsume in "Natsume Yuujinchou") sounds 'different' here. Which is a pleasant surprise, considering it's rather RARE to hear him sounding gruff and un-ikemen-like. At first sight, that is, because his natural voice does become familiarly recognizable after a while. - However, his personality and constant teasing to Raptor isn't the utmost important thing regarding this debut. Why? Two reasons. First, I might be mistaken, but it seems Raptor's the only one who has known him. I mean, even the first three members Hammy, Champ, and Spada looks at him like a stranger. Second, because our Commander shows up by bringing loads of Auxiliaries Kyu Globes... all at once! I count there are 13 of them at the table. WOW!!!! I know there are at least 45 of these collectibles confirmed so far (because... I have the list, duh?), and it could go on towards 48 if the show's following Ptolemy's Constellations instead of the 88 modern ones. But do they have to reveal so many at the same time? What's wrong with obtaining them one by one? At least, I thought the show is going to do that *sigh* - By the way, as suspected, we get an update for the Opening Sequence once more. It contains a 7-members transformation scene now. Although... the way Libra Gold and Ophiucus Silver are standing with a little distance from the others looks rather... awkward. I get that the empty space is meant to be occupied with the remaining two members, but it still looks odd. With what's happening in this episode, looks like we're going to get the full version after 5 episodes. - This week's destination is Planet Needle, a so-called desert planet. And it's about to go even dry soon (in just three hours!), because apparently, the planet is in danger thanks to Jark Matter draining on its Planetium, its vital energy source. This is accomplished through a special spaceship called Moraimarz. Sounds like a plot from Netflix's "Voltron Legendary Defender", right? To be honest, when I heard the phrase 'desert planet', I sort of expected something like... Tatooine, perhaps? Alas that's not the case, because obviously Japan doesn't have the kind of natural open-space setting to pull this off practically. It still acts as the inspiration for the new character's clothing choice though. - Aaah, yes, we have another new character, and it's Stinger (Yousuke Kishi)! Eventhough he has actually showed up on the closing scene last week, parading around that odd-looking pendulum. LOL. I wonder why he debuts alongside Commander Xiao? Could they be... linked somehow? Hmmm. Anyway, true to his namesake, Stinger has crazy... stinger! I've read about this ability before, but I never expected that it would be this cool. It is used as an offensive poison-inducing weapon, and I really love how it's conveniently serving as some kind of whip too. Particularly when it is used to strangle Champ during their duel! - Yes, intriguingly, Stinger is linked with Champ's backstory! This has got to be a red-herring, but for now he's being regarded as the man behind Prof. Anton's death. The twist of the day, is that he's already a Kyuranger, and even has his own Constellation Blaster! #2 The Poison Star Scorpio Orange debuts, but not on the same side. Yep, only episode 3 and we already have an anti-hero on the loose! One that even takes down 5 Kyurangers without breaking a sweat. - This is a wonderful development, because it signifies that Stinger could very well be the first Kyuranger ever, even before Raptor joins the team. Commander Xiao must have known him already too. Hence why he's evading all sense of urgency. In fact, I have an inkling feeling that Stinger is acting as some kind of... spy/undercover agent. A ruse to get him close enough to Eridron. Proof? The poison he had struck to the Kyurangers, wears off on its own, which means, it's never lethal! Not just that, the way he treats the Malistrate Moretsuyo-Indaver strikes me as odd. Sure, he does attack him because he hates to be interfered, but he might have said that as an excuse to fight alongside Leo Red. - Just like Garu, Champ is in this not just to protect the universe, but also for revenge. Which is why they get along nicely. This is where a naive character like Lucky organically comes into play. His pure sense of justice doesn't want Champ to have a grudge against Stinger, because both are Kyurangers. After all, they need ALL NINE to form a complete set, right? It would be wrong if one member is working with Jark Matter. Beside, his easy logic says that a bad guy wouldn't be able to awaken a Kyu Globe, which is a very valid reason, IMHO. I just hope this doesn't mean that Champ's story will be resolved very quickly. - Interestingly, Champ, Stinger, and Lucky are all zodiac-based Kyurangers, right? (Taurus, Scorpio, and Leo). Speaking of zodiac, Gemini Kyu Globe (Futago/Twins) becomes the first Auxiliary Globe used in the show. Obviously, it is used to create a twin/clone, and so we have two Leo Reds now! Raptor herself delivers this item for Lucky to use. Wait, if she's on the ground (and clearly enjoying the fight), who's piloting the Orion? Balance! After all, controlling other machine is his ability. And see? The other members have recovered easily as well. - I can't explain the reason why Scorpio Orange summons his Scorpio Voyager to stop Leo Red, but highly likely it's a fan-service to Super Sentai mecha fans. Yep, while Kyuren-Oh is duking it out with the Moraimarz (the spaceship has a robo form!), we're getting a parallel fight between the orange and black Voyagers as well. Poor Chamaeleon Green gets her Chamaeleon Voyager position-swapped by the more offensive Ophiucus Silver though. That's twice in a row! LOL. As for Dorado Yellow? We get to see his Voyager's finisher instead. "Kyuren-Oh! Meteor Break! Super Galaxy!". - In the end, angsty Stinger is NOT part of the team yet. Worse, he's officially working with Eridron now. Thus his silhoutte becomes Dark instead. Will Lucky be able to win him over as friend? Or will Champ's words be proven, that he's a foe? Friend or Foe, that is the question. Oh and one more thing, the ending dance only adds Xiao Long Bao, with Spada (who's having a blast with the choreo!) and Hammy taking the spotlight. Guess we shouldn't expect Stinger in it until he's officially part of the team, eh?
Overall: I knew it! I've suspected that Stinger would easily steal my attention when I first saw him, and he did. But that's not all. He's vying Balance's place to be my favorite character of the show, giving the mechanical lifeform a run for his money. I really liked Stinger's anti-hero debut, as well as Champ's backstory. Unfortunately, the latter is also the reason why I'm not giving this episode a higher score. Right now I'm worried that the robot wrestler's story would be resolved too quickly. I might be worried for naught though. With that said, the season's world-building continued to impress. The fun new Commander was a great addition, because it's clear that he might be something more than meets the eye. Can't help but wonder what kind of secret he has under his sleeves? Perhaps, a rather heroic one? Hmmm... ;D Next week: The Final (for now, at least) Kyuranger debuts... Clumsy dreamer Raptor-283 steals the spotlight!
Episode 03 Score: 8 out of 10
