Nicole and her bestfriend from high school Joceline! She was also known as Linn and Ghost (online).

She was the girl that she was closet to in high school and shared all here secrets with. Joceline's family was not very wealthy but Nicole liked buying her things (with her dad's money of course). Linn also helped Nicole realized she was bisexual which she was VERY enthusiastic about.

Together (with other students) they would make short movies or skits for their film class and just for fun. Linn was very skilled with a camera which she owned, even taking photos on the side, which Nicole loved staring in.

Joceline was supposed to be introduced when I made Nicole but I never did until now. She is the species of bird Nicole almost was; a Kiwi!

They keep in touch from time to time but aren't as close anymore. Nicole's ex husband didn't really like Linn so Nicole stopped talking to her. Also Linn helper her deal with the murder.

How would the Battletech universe deal with things like an Armored Core? Specifically NEXTs from Armored Core 4/For Answer? You can also answer for the standard ACs of Armored Core 1 through Armored Core 3: Last Raven as well.

(OOC: Okay @kiwi-kuns-art-tumb! So, been a bit, but I wanted to consult with all my friends who are much bigger Armored Core nerds (affectionate) than me. I'm going to break this down into the original question, and the follow up. Caveat that this depends on how exactly you meant your original question.

Did you mean "how do individual Battlemechs stack up to a NEXT"? The answer is, according to my friends, they don't. "A Battlemech essentially amounts of a particularly spicy MT," says my BF.

However, in terms of how the BT universe would deal with (read: kill) a single NEXT, the short answer is (to again quote my BF): "There's no way that any BT force can match the PA [Primal Armor], devastating speed, and sheer firepower of a NEXT without a cost-ineffective amount of resources, so the most tactically viable option would likely be WMDs, or orbital bombardment. A NEXT would essentially have the same limitations of any other ultimate weapon at the tactical level: it's undefeatable in its own playing field, but it can't counter a move on the strategic scale." Several other friends pointed out that conventional, non-orbital artillery might also work against them.

In terms of the BT universe as a whole going against any of the AC universes: BT takes it every time, "by simple matter of scale. Only in AC6 has it ever been implied that humanity is on more than 2 planets."

In terms of your follow up about standard ACs from Gen 1-3, the general consensus was "they are defeatable more easily than a NEXT". However, there was more debate here with the NEXTs, centered around just how the size, speed, and firepower of said "Normals" compared to a Battlemech.

Some took the stance that, quote, "Non-NEXT ACs are really just a LAM that actually works; you could take them a lot easier," and "With a Normal, the consideration is really only the speed and firepower, both of which could be sufficiently matched by experienced pilots or significant numbers." Others said, "Early gen AC are probably inferior to a Battlemech; closer to Protomechs in form and function... 1st-3rd gen ACs are really small; and speed only gets up there in limited cases." So it more became a debate on "how easy would it be to defeat them?" and less "can they be defeated?" to which the answer was "yes".

oh gosh. i'm not sure, but i know it definitely WILL affect their parenting... i think at first donnie will find himself just... deferring to his partner a LOT in almost any situation because he's afraid that he'll fuck it up, because he DOESN'T feel like he understands proper boundaries or what parenting is supposed to look like, etc etc etc, and he's afraid he'll mess up. he probably reads a TON of parenting books as well because RESEARCH and will often try to pull directly from them in any situation he can, and is confused when things don't go exactly the way they were described in the text... leo i think kind of tends to flounder between being overprotective and feeling the desire to protect his son from everything and anything and wanting to overcorrect this tendency by pulling back and trying to give him as much freedom and space as possible, which sometimes leads to some... inconsistencies. there's definitely a learning curve for both of them, but they both get the hang of it eventually. they both have lovely partners and a very loving and supportive family to help them and they'll figure it out with a bit of practice.

i like to imagine them all staying very close, especially coz i'm loosely planning on them all going through the kraang-apocalypse together (and then coming through to the other side!) so i can't imagine them ever drifting too far from each other, emotionally or geographically. there's a bit of a rocky start for a lot of them, but all of the siblings end up a very tight-knit bunch.

My response to this week’s BestiaryPosting challenge from @maniculum

A little rough this week, but wanted to get it out there (perfect is the enemy of good :p).

"The Slagzogg marks the watches of the night by its constant cry. No other creature picks up the scent of man as it does.  There are two kinds of Slagzoggs, domestic and wild. Wild Slagzoggs fly high, in a an orderly fashion, signifying those who, far away from earthly things, preserve a rule of virtuous conduct. Domestic Slagzoggs live together in villages, they cackle together all the time and rend each other with their beaks; they signify those who, although they like conventual life, nevertheless find time to gossip and slander. All wild Slagzoggs are grey in colour; I have not seen any that were of mixed colour or white. But among domestic Slagzoggs, there are not only grey but variegated and white ones. Wild Slagzoggs are the colour of ashes, that is to say, those who keep apart from this world wear the modest garb of penitence."

Okay, we know they fly. We know they have beaks. Hence, it's pretty obvious what kind of creature this is...

A pterosaur! Er... Well, there's no mention of feathers (which is probably reasonable...), perhaps I'm just tickled by the thought of medieval domesticated pterosaurs? I probably spent way too much time trying to draw a wattle fence, too. We have a farmer feeding her flock of domesticated miniature azhdarchid pterosaurs, while a few wild slagzoggs fly high overhead, looking down on their cousins below.

I went with azhdarchid pterosaurs since I felt that would be more visually distictive, and fit better in the picture given their more upright and distinctive method of locomotion on the ground. I also love the idea of a slagzogg 'village' cackling (like the one spreading its wings on top of the fence), clacking beaks, preening themselves, and generally making noise!

We also know that 'no other creature picks up the scent of man' as well as the slagzogg... We do know at this point that the bestiary authors love their superlatives almost as much as Pokedex descriptions, but we have no reason to doubt it. So, looking at modern archosaurs with a great sense of smell... Apparently, crocodiles actually have a fairly good sense of smell, but we're looking at birds to work out how best to represent this in a creature with a beak. Now kiwis have nostrils at the end of the beak, vultures also have a great sense of smell (though they completely slipped my mind until I was most of the way through), which left me with petrels... Petrels are diving seabirds with a distinctive 'tubenose' (their nostrils form a tubular nasal passage atop the beak), and use their sense of smell to detect prey (and their colonies) at sea. It's definitely a distinctive look!

What do they use their great sense of smell for (apart from identifying their keepers, one assumes)? Maybe these are truffle hunting pterosaurs? ;)

Actually, my first thought on reading the description was the dog vultures from the Judge Dredd comics (unfortunately I can't find any pictures online), until I re-read the description and noticed the reference to beaks!

This all raises an interesting question about how I (we? I don't want to assume too much) approach these challenges.

I feel like most of the time, I'm trying very hard to approach the prompts with a completely open mind; in many ways, a lot of the fun of these challenges is seeing what designs we come up with compared to the bestiary illustrators, given the same prompts.

Occasionally I'll have a pretty good idea what the creature is meant to be, in which case I will sometimes exercise a form of 'malicious compliance' where I'm either sticking as closely as possible to the description, or more rarely pursuing a parallel direction that I know is not the 'correct' one, in order to avoid drawing anything too close to the animal I believe the prompt is referencing.

Most rarely, I just have a cool idea from the prompt (like the Blisheag) and head off in that direction instead.

Guess which one this is :D

So what I'm also learning here is that I need more practice drawing humans, and drawing pterosaurs!

As an aside, this week I discovered this site;

It's basically a giant repository of links to various images and sites relating to medieval life and culture (so for example, I looked up the links for straw hats to get some medieval straw hat references this week...). There's so many links in here that some of them will inevitably have moved or expired, but it's potentially a really good source of references! Sorry for that kinda depressing vent from a few days ago. To make up for it, Imma give you guys a sneak peak to something I’m making.

Before I show it off though, I’d like to thank @technically-a-kiwi for the idea of this AU. They made a Cosmic AU for Pizza Tower that I really liked, but they ended up changing most of the lore they had made for it, and even though the original AU is technically still around as the Lawful Cosmic AU, they'll probably be focusing more on True Cosmic from now on, so I asked them if it'd be OK if I could use their idea for my own little AU, and they said yes! So thank you very much Kiwi, and everyone reading this rn, you should go check them out!

That being said... They prooobably think that I meant I wanted to take the whole AU and expand upon it myself, which uh... I probably should've been more clear that that wasn't exactly what I meant. What I really wanted to do was take the idea itself and use it to make a Cosmic AU for a different game, while also changing a few bits up so It's still somewhat original and not just me taking/using every aspect of their idea. What is that game, you ask? Well, it's a game that I personally hold very close to me, since I began to hyperfixate on it during a pretty hard time in my life and is the main reason I kept drawing stuff...

i feel morbidly curious since i've been looking at old sb art and stuff, what was the original story/first draft like? story-wise and character-wise? again, just curious

The original first draft, version 0.001, pre-alpha, unrendered version of Stormbite was a hot mess, but there are still some anachronisms of it in the published version because I loved messing around with it in its raw form.

RIP Version 0.001 - Circa. 2012~

The first version was written by an angsty, unknowingly asexual, hyper stressed, nerd-ass teenager full of spite filled ambition, who had a little book/art club of other nerds who were into art, manga, video games, hyperfixations on birds, mushrooms, fish, and all other niche Ology zones, that they wanted to entertain and please. We all liked sci-fi and fantasy, non-human protagonists, were all raging angrily about how a certain series was going and the state of YA fiction at the time (it was those dark 2009-2013 years where all YA fiction was paranormal romance love triangle bullshit).

Because I was full of spiteful ambitious rage, and it was not my first rodeo in deciding to make a creative project of some kind, I decided to do my own story/comic with some characters created by my nerd club friends.

It was entirely what you'd expect of a teenager who did not fear cringe and was just wanting a good time to entertain friends. Plots were flexible abstract things, and canons were loose. Ships passed in the night, and AU's were golden and hyper modifiable to fit any scenario or adaptation. There was no lore or world rules, it was a free for all.

I managed to get through almost 20 pages of colouring this super rough comic, and doing what is essentially still the first chapter without really doing a script or any forethought into what happens next. Version 0.001's remnants still exist in chapters 1-5 and that is it, everything else after that came later when I decided that drawing took too long, and writing was faster and easier to change. Drawing out thumbnails of scenes did help in writing what happened and how a fight played out however.

The original versions of the characters however:

Storm had the full anime works: She had a split personality with colour changing, glowing eyes, possessed by the spirit of her dead twin, a metal collar that couldn't be taken off, lightning and frost powers, nerdy t-shirts and converse.

Kat was originally a blonde-haired blue eyed white girl, with blue jay wings which changed. Her tail was cut off, she was a trained assassin who wore revealing ninja outfits, her and Amell was meant to be a thing.

Beth had a pet owl called Harrold who was a spy for her, wore a cavaliers hat and was a self-proclaimed technomancer who could hack anything and control technology, was cheerful and helpful, had all of her limbs, and was obsessed with blueberry muffins.

Wilny was pasty emo boy with scraggy hair and much greener wings. Also he could actually stop time rather than mess with perceptions to make it feel as though time has stopped.

Amell was a skinny, lanky dude, greek rather than kiwi, and had blue eyes, and could lift a car in flight.

Comet was more of a main character with a kind of disturbing backstory, long hair, reality manipulation powers

Raoul was a wolf-girl before she became Asena and Raoul his own person. Palmer didn't really fully exist.

Malana is more or less the same, but was meant to have horns at one point and was created in Risio but was a reject.

Sabre & Fell were generic bad guys. Rex was a good guy.

There was also a lot of other characters who either have been recycled into other minor characters (ex. Rai, Asena, the Varren group ((that was the first rodeo)) or Roux) or have been lost to time and cut completely.

Of course, time goes on, you grow and change, develop and redevelop both what you like, how you work, what you can do and prefer, so of course it evolved a lot more and there was a lot of changes along the way.

Personally, I think they all look a lot better now.

I've never taken an art class, but I would point you toward @/puirell and/or @/penguinkiwi if you're after technical advice. I know Cato's posted some tutorials and I spent a lot of time staring at Kiwi's linework, afaik they've both taken classes. @/maiseey is my realism role model if you want to check her out too. find artists you like and without copying them, find things they do that you'd like to emulate

my super basic advice would be

you'll be bad when you start. it will feel embarrassing. you will want to just quit because it makes you feel embarrassed. you won't want to share with anyone. you won't want to look at what you've drawn. I cannot stress this enough: ignore all of that

don't be afraid to use references. references are your friend

drawing more is the best way to start drawing better. that means you have to be okay with your art looking less than stellar for a hot minute

if you're drawing people, study at least a little bit of anatomy. look at diverse body types and how weight distribution works. a strong foundation there is helpful to build off

be open to constructive criticism. if you have artist friends, they're probably more able to see a route forward for you when you hit a creative wall than you are yourself. this includes people pointing out things like (particularly in sw fandom) inadvertent whitewashing or inaccurate representation of your subject

start simple

your style will change and evolve with or without your permission. let it happen, and don't be afraid to take the wheel if you're bored or unhappy with your current style. my point is that style isn't static

draw what you like and you'll be motivated to draw more to get better. for me, that meant drawing my ocs over and over and over and over
