I know Bill's the big bad demon everyone is afraid of and he will protect his husband at all costs (when no one's looking), but I think it's also worth mentioning that Dipper, even being the dorky, squishy human that he is, also cares about his dumb demon hubby and wants to keep him safe, even if it annoys Bill, and really, he doesn't need protecting the way Dipper does. He isn't going to puff out his chest and get in someone's face like some macho man, but I think Dipper knee-jerk reaction when Bill's in "danger" isn't to just shrug because he's an all-powerful demon who can handle it. If a blast that could level a whole town was aimed at Bill's head (for him, this just means a bad hair day and a new body), Dipper's immediate impulse is to push him out of the way or defend him against whatever wants to kill his familiar. Because he's not thinking "Bill could literally end this match in .3 seconds." He's thinking "if you touch even one hair on that asshole's head, I'm going to knock yours clean off your shoulders." I don't know what the point even is in this post, just that Dipper is this nerdy, unassuming guy who ends up being viciously protective under the right conditions. Like I think Dipper pulls off the bloody and vengeful look SO well that Bill immediately melts and just lets him handle the situation, even though it's not really Dipper's fight to begin with. He's beating the guy to a pulp with zero reserve, and Bill's off to the side swooning and twirling his hair over his man for getting his hands dirty for him.
It's true! While Bill's not the type to enjoy being underestimated, he has to admit! Seeing his adorable husband all riled up on his behalf is a hell of a sight.
The thing is, Dipper's a good guy! He can't help but put himself in danger over others. Even when all reason and logic say that Bill would be absolutely fine if he got his head exploded or a shiv in his kidney, Dipper's instinct is to fully and immediately get in the way of that. To, in fact, be protective.
Mostly this is only evident when Dipper has to stand up to Ford. Yes, yes, Bill's a vile horrible monstrosity, but he didn't do that particular thing you're accusing him of. Watching him stand up to his uncle is a particular treat!
For bigger threats, though - Well. Bill's gonna be absolutely fine, no matter what happens, thank you very much. But he's definitely not opposed to seeing some guy who was about to literally stab him in the back get a few of his teeth knocked out.
#answers#Dipper doesn't like seeing his husband get hurt. Yes Bill likes pain and all but only contextually. And he's immortal.#But Dipper can't help but cringe and wince on his behalf anyway. He talks a lot of shit but he really does love his bastard husband#When it comes to most of the the Ford situations#Bill gets to have fun with those#Dipper's ready to argue on Bill's behalf. Most times. Yes a little head-explodey doesn't keep Bill down but Dipper is NOT a fan#Catch Bill standing just behind Dipper - or even leaping up into his arms and nearly making him topple over -#Only to look very self-satisfied. Going :3 'yes I am babey'#Looking like the perfect innocent cherub he absolutely isn't gets on Ford's nerves in a HUGE way#Both super obnoxious AND it makes his mortal roll his eyes at him. SO fun!#For other times he gets defended it's Bill's turn to roll his eyes#But goddamn if it isn't cute as hell. PLUS it's one of the rare times he actually sees Dipper really riled up#Not in like a flustered argumentative type of way. In an actual Fuck You You're Going Down kinda way#Real stupid that Dipper keeps doing this. But real hard to oppose it when Bill gets such a view outta it!#Also concept: Dipper trying to shield Bill while he's in his real form and feeling a moment of 'oh no' when he fails#Only for like. The knife to go 'tink' off his surface. Bill looks unimpressed#Another reminder for Dipper that yeah okay Bill can handle himself. He feels pretty dumb about it#That's okay DIpper you mean well! Bill will still smooch you for trying#APPROVED.jpeg implied but not included due to me adding too much text

YOUR MALLEUS POST IS JUST!!!!! AGDKFFLSVFL!!!! WHO KNOWS HOW MANY TIMES I RE-READ THAT THING BUT IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!!!! 😫😭👌🖤💚
I'm so late to this but thank you so much Knight!! 🖤💚🖤💚 I'm so happy you enjoyed Blindfolded Malleus... I was so excited for you to read it, and I'm very happy it lived up to the hype and anticipation!!! Truly, I am so honored and grateful that you would re-read something so long 🥹 it amazes me how supportive you are!! I hope I can continue to write things that you enjoy! One day in the [regretfully] far future I swear to you that I will put out an Idia fic just for you hehehe. I'm so overwhelmed by the amount of things I am excited to write, but I guess that is a wonderful problem to have! I only wish I had more time in the day to write, but alas, such is life. Why the fUCk am I writing so formal right now daiohssadoi;hdSAO not me saying BUT ALAS. SUCH IS LIFE????? It is so.
I'm actually taking a TWELVE DAY vacation from work starting on the 22nd so I might actually do a little request event where people can send me like kink prompts or something. I think that'll be fun!
Okay and FINE I'll do some fluff prompts too for the fluff people but please don't judge my fluff too harshly, I'm still learning!!! For some reason smut just comes naturally dhaDSAHIDDASijdsan I'll start gathering some prompts and we will do a little ask game or something.
Tumblr media
📣 By the way FELLOW HONEST THIGH RIDING ANON if you SEE this first of all, ONCE AGAIN: I wish to express my undying devotion to you and your exceptional thought process. I am positively frothing at the mouth over your request and I am PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE I am finally making good progress and it WILL be out soon. We WILL make him cum in his pants. We WILL make him cry, whimper, and moan.

ok i might be talking complete nonsense here, but. the Strict Order as a metaphor for an author facing writer's block.
"the Strict Order abandoned the world," yeah if i wrote a sweet potato story where the main character just keeps suffering with no sign of resolution, i'd drop the story too (<- has actually done this with a tesilid fanfic orz)
"The world rejected the Strict Order's abandonment, so to keep the world going the Strict Order made Tesilid keep rewinding time." That's just like when you get stuck at a certain point in the plot and keep rewriting the events leading up to that moment to try to make it work. nods sagely i understand. i too make my OCs go through scenarios lots of times until we get it right. sometimes it takes months. sometimes it never works.
"The saintess only exists in timeline ~86," oh yes, the classic 'idk how to solve this problem so i'll introduce a new character' trick. i'm familiar
"okay but if time looping is the Strict Order rewriting the story, then why can Tesilid remember it" because the author already wrote those scenes and it'll be sad to throw them all out. and also it's a cool gimmick to have a regressor story. (<- has drastically changed the premise and worldbuilding of a story just to make an alternate timeline relevant before)
"what about ailette's existence--" same as muriel, where you insert a new character in hopes of solving a plot problem. except this time the characters write the plot themselves, because just this once you give priority to their character traits & goals rather than where you thought you wanted the plot to go. (tesilid has someone he can be himself around and who can do certain things on his behalf, instead of being fully constrained by his obligations. ailette gets insane buffs instead of being restricted by the world's difficulty.) therefore the chars now have more agency and are not only solving problems, but also taking the story in a direction you never would have thought of before. (whatever the hell tesilid and ailette are cooking rn, separately, which is surely going to result in interesting developments later on)
tldr; the strict order as a metaphor for an author who hit writer's block. their friend World Shaper inserts their OC Ailette in and their writing style is to let the characters run away with the plot. it works. world shaper and all their friends are co-writers working on the story together and reacting to it in real time.

inspired by my own 9-1-1 / bad buddy post, here's a bad buddy / starsky & hutch sequel about cutting ties with your past, polluting the ocean, throwing small shiny rectangular objects, etc. 🌊
Tumblr media
#this is fully a shitpost but also. i DID get into it and go a little insane over how well tiny parts of this happen to match up#as you may be able to tell by how many cuts back and forth this has. and how interminably long it is. i know 2+ min is an eternity online#i would say nobody asked for this but i would be lying because i asked myself. and i delivered!!#video#*#bad buddy#starsky and hutch#anyway of course i have more to say:#1) worth noting that pat and pran are specifically in a zero waste village. it's all about NOT polluting the ocean fdjkf#2) watching all of this a bunch of times... dear god starsk. hutch. take like five steps closer to the water maybe#the way things stand they have to throw those badges a LONG way or they're barely going to make a splash#(also. please don't hit those birds. the birds did not invent Society)#3) i'm glad the bad buddy dynamic is what it is because if it weren't. that would have been one of the meanest things pat does#4) sometimes i go. yes bad buddy is corny and cringe but that's okay!! it's fun!!#and then i remember hutch unironically says things like well partner. the way i see it this old badge has polluted me just about enough#and i realize that i've BEEN here. i've BEEN in the corny cringe. i am rolling around in it#5) as mentioned in tags on previous post. yelling your feelings at the ocean is very much a recurring trope in queer movies and tv#i should start making a list actually maybe. but also. if getting rid of their badges with synchronized throws wasn't enough by itself#i'm pointing at bad buddy (explicitly queer). i'm pointing at starsky and hutch. i'm seeing dots#there's just Stuff to talk about here you know. dear god is there ever Stuff

📽 action!: rank all six of the films (or three if you're a hater)
Answers for this LotR ask-game.
Ahh okay so at this point I have to confess something terrible: I still have not seen the third Hobbit movie. I'm sorry! I just couldn't do it. The fuckery of it all, especially in the second movie with Mirkwood and Thranduil and Legolas ("a lowly Silvan elf" what the FUCK what the fuck PJ WHAT THE FUCK), was just too much for me. Character-assassination is one thing, and I thought after Denethor I knew what I was going to be getting with Thranduil but NOPE! It was literal world building assassination and I just CANNOT.
Don't get me wrong, Lee Pace did an amazing job and actually seeing Mirkwood was amazing and it was genuinely delightful to see Orlando put those ears on again; but the OuTrAgE that filled my heart at the yeet-ing of what minimal canon we even have for the Mirkwood elves was just intolerable, and while I did mean to go see it, really I did, I just...couldn't actually get the motivation to go before it was out of theatres. I've heard the EE are better (less studio fuckery) so I'll watch them someday! Honest! I just...haven't. yet.
And as to the Lord of the Rings trilogy...man, I don't even know how to do this. In terms of which is the best film, or in terms of which one I enjoy watching most, or in terms of which on hits me in the heart hardest or...? I don't know if I can objectively rank my feelings about these movies even in my own brain because RotK ends with Into the West and I have FeelingsTM about the Undying Lands and Sea Longing okay. So the last scene of RotK at the Grey Havens is a fucking spear through the heart every time and I can't even describe the knot of feelings it engenders, and I think overall TTT may be my favorite but also it has Plot Issues that piss me off even more than the Plot Issues in RotK I think,...yeah, we're going to do this in terms of Film Crafting rather than personal favorites because I'm having too many feelings lmao. So! In order of most-well-done-movie to least:
Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
Return Of The King
The Desolation of Smaug
An Unexpected Journey
#look there are some REALLY LOVELY MOMENTS in the hobbit movies#(all three of them; i've seen enough stuff floating around the internet to know that even about the one i haven't actually seen lmao)#but the ratio of beautiful moments to what-the-fuckery is just so skewed to the latter#and the cartoonish unreality of most of the effects do NOT help#it's like somebody watched the mumakil bit from rotk and went ''more of that but dial it up to eleventy-one!'' and i just...#do y'all know how FUCKING EXCITED i was to see the White Council???#to see GALADRIEL?#to see sauron thrown out of dol guldur? TO SEE THE WHITE COUNCIL!???#because as soon as i heard ''three movies'' i knew I KNEW (i hoped) that they had to be adding that it#because how the fuck else were they going to pad-out that tiny little book into three whole movies? OBVIOUSLY with the white council!!!#and then...we got a chase scene in the mines that made the podracing look like it deserved an oscar#and the most cringe-inducingly-artificial cgi armies at war that i think i've ever seen even IN video games#it was like watching galactic battlegrounds middle-earth edition wtf#did y'all literally just make one elf and one dwarf and copy-past them a million times into the scene wtffffff#but i still need to make it clear that i DO love the good bits that's what makes the bad parts hurt so much!#like: does the fact that the elves coming to helm's deep make no sense and also VANISH from the plot as soon as it's over irritate me? YES!#but the battle itself is filmed with so much HEART that i don't care I DON'T CARE#i still cheer at ''no orc horn'' i still weep at haldir's death (GODS that MUSIC!) i still watch the whole thing RAPT and ENTHRALLED#but 80% of the hobbit's actions scenes don't DO anything they're just empty pixels with less purpose than the droid factory on geonosis#and there should be SO MUCH HEART because that's WHAT TOLKIEN IS auuuughhhhhh#and the fact that they missed the entire fucking EVERYTHING about MIRKWOOD of all fucking places...! UGH#DO YOU KNOW HOW AMAZING THESE ACTORS WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THESE ROLES IF THEY'D ACTUALLY BEEN FILMING THIS STORY??? PJ WHY!#lotr movies#hobbit movies#middle earth asks

The idea of 'The Sovereign' and this storyline in Wonder Woman by Tom King reminds me of Hydra Captain America and the Secret Empire by Nick Spencer.
#wonder woman#i didn't want to discuss this but the sovereign really makes me angry in just how lazy he is as a character#and this whole idea of a 'secret king' running America#reeks the same as 'what if Captain America was a Hydra agent all along'#not only does the conspiracy that's been created upend a lot of what's already been established in WW lore#but this is also just a lazy kind of character creation that just takes everything Diana is and makes it opposite#the Sovereign or is he a Bizarro Wonder Woman?#like Superman and Lex aren't wholly opposites their goals are the same it's their motivation that's different#Lex 'helps' because he wants to look good and get praise and money he does good for selfish reasons#meanwhile Superman does good because it's the right thing to do#the sovereign looks and feels shallow#it's trying hard to be edgy but it's cringe i mean 'lasso of lies'?#it feels like it's gonna be revealed that there wasn't ever going to be a history where the sovereign and his ilk ruled America#but someone gave this man the lasso of lies and he created his new reality off the old one LIKE when Cap was rewritten to be Hydra#and we know he gets locked up so what is the actual stakes in this story we know he gets defeated#so what makes this story important?#like wonder woman earth one did this whole arc better and the main villain being max lord aka ares made more sense#the first 6 or so issues should have been on working towards unraveling amazonian influence and power in America because a group of men#see them as a threat to American superiority if this is the direction you want to go in#snapping your fingers and fastfowarding for a first issue is not the in media res you think it is#im ranting but ww has been one of mh fav series the past few years and now#for the first time in a long time#i have to not read it because this whole storyline sucks#dc comics#i can't wait for whoever comes next to undo what's happening now because if there's one consistent thing about WW is she will be reinvented

I'll scream my little head off about this forever, but any post still mad about the 2016 election fundamentally needs to note that we fucking outright won that one for the email lady except that our allegedly democratic system of government does not award the supreme executive role to the person with the most votes. As much harm as Trump and did and is still doing, the people to blame aren't the marginal voters who didn't like their choices it's the fuckers who built the electoral college and senate, we need serious systemic changes to our voting to undo the damage, which is a lot harder of a fix than yelling at people about how they didn't vote enough when so many of us fucking did but live in a fundamentally undemocratic system that doesn't reward the winner of the vote with the office they were running for.
#If your takeaway was 'some people weren't enthusiastic about an objectively unimpressive candidate' that's fair#But if you then want to insist *that* and not fundamental problems with the system are why it went bad#IDK what to tell you learn more about how American politics works.#The electoral college is a fundamental problem and couldn't even do the one fucking thing people who excused its existence said it'd do#If it were an actual democratic protection they could've defected to the popular vote winner instead of the obviously fascist jackass#But it's obviously not designed as a protection for people who aren't deeply invested in the status quo#Fail country with cringe electoral systems.#Voting is a basic buy-in but like... maybe google disinfranchisment before being sure you're aiming your rage correctly on this one#Most of the states we lost it on engaged in that at margins easily enough to swing the fucking thing#It just rings a lot like Joe Biden's advice to out-organize voter suppression and I don't take kindly to it#I'm not saying don't be mad that election was a fundamental betrayal of the people of this country and should be treated as such#But you can't make it about the voters without acknowledging the system the voters were voting in#At least not if you want me to think of you as a serious person making as serious argument about American politics#But Jareth weren't you all in on Voting these past few months for the CA primaries?#Yes I think voting is good and important and that's why I think that the system should be set up to reflect the results of votes taken#Rather than the one we've got now.#Which does not meaningfully reflect the will of the voters in any way shape or form#Also CA's system is much fairer on the whole

what do you like specifically about Kiryu?
Tumblr media
the fact he has a laundry list of dumb things he's done throughout the games
#snap chats#LMAO LIKE IS THIS THE SAME ANON OR IS TIMING HILARIOUS#anyways to actually answer the questions#What Do I Like Specifically About Kiryu idk :) i say he reminds me of my dad a lot and that is true#mostly when it comes to fatherhood tho. and when i say that ima get people sayin 'im so sorry' but no my dads great 😭#and ik kiryu aint a saint and he aint perfect but he gives me the same vibes as my dad does#beyond that tho he's just silly :) i like how despite being an intimidating guy he's still very cute in a way#he's also very earnest about things- in his Cool Kiryu way of course#he doesnt shirk learning about things and he's always open to new experiences and that's so sweet#and sometimes his goofy philosophical speeches do get to me. Again it very much reminds me of my dad he does the same A LOT#and kiryu's just dorky i like how he likes manga i like how he likes pocket circuit#and even if he was reluctant to be ono michio it was very sweet that he took the role seriously#and wanted the successor to ono michio to be a perfect one#he's just a very sincere guy and i love it#now for the DUMBEST thing he's done. every instance he's tried to have someone else take care of haruka#off the top of my head this happens twice but its like kiryu youre DUMB#STOP ACTING LIKE YOU CAN'T BE A GOOD DAD TO HER YOU'RE MAKING THIS A SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY#also kiryu just dumping the tojo on daigo. i mean it worked out I Guess but still that was the craziest gamble for this organization#and tbh poor majima for kiryu dragging him back into the tojo to watch over daigo#not really 'dumb' but inconsiderate so yeah that was p cringe#this was The Kiryu Post thanks for reading everyone i love kiryu

it’s like every day i flipflop back and forth between “katsuki should say ‘eijirou’ as many times as he can all the time. ‘eijirou come look at this’ ‘jesus christ eijirou it’s 7 a.m.’ ‘eijirou, steak or fish tonight’” and “i need krbk to call each other baby or else i’ll die”
#idk if it's obvious from the every piece of content i've made in the last 6 months but i've like been stuck on this one#and not to like accidentally peek a little deep into my psyche but it might be bc for the brief time i had a gf last year#we dove like REALLY hard and heavy into the pet names#i did not enjoy being in a relationship with her (largely bc it was so affectionate so fast) but. i did like the affection#and honestly thinking back on the times where we did call each other 'baby' specifically it felt like so much bigger than 'babe'#which is probably why it sounds so gross to some people but the more time goes by and the more i think abt what an actual good#relationship would look like to me. the more i feel like being able to say 'baby' and not have it be cringe would be a factor#which is why i've been so stuck on making things that make krbk say baby. as stupid as it is#i really do love bkg saying eijirou and think that's the more in character option anyway#sometimes your krbk has just gotta be a little self indulgent though you know?#and other times it can be realistic and so so good#if this fic i started last month ever does see the light of day....and it might bc i do like the premise#it'll maybe be the most realistic take on bkg as a part of krbk that i've ever written#not to keep rambling but also thinking back on the way i've written bkg over the years i really do think his character lends itself to#a lot of levels of realistic vs indulgent#weird wording but i'll explain#in canon he's so analytical and thoughtful at heart you know? but he's also 16 and brash and impulsive and plain dumb sometimes#once again thinking about how i didn't actually like him that much on my first watch until the latter half of s2#where his characterization starts to become a little more day-to-day instead of really heavy digging into HIS psyche#so he just shows up over and over again to get mad about something stupid and it's endearing#like 'who is this guy'#so you can write a bkg who's very out of his element and hotheaded and thinks of himself differently than he actually comes off#or you could write a bkg (like the bkg as of late) who's very in control and calculating and doesn't let his guard down#neither side is technically inaccurate but it can be hard to strike a balance bc those things sound very out of sync with each other#so within krbk you can write a very 'actions speak louder than words' bkg who is kinda neutral-cold most of the time#or you can write the goofier 'i won at romance and i'm gonna rub it in your faces' easily swept off his feet fandom favorite bkg#which can be very good#and if anything the fact that he really does keep his guard so high up so often makes you WANT to write him being sappy#especially when he's grown up#have i ever mentioned that like the stock photo of krbk in my mind has aged up?

Decided to do with my anxiety what I did with my body dysmorphia ages ago which is to beat it with the affirmation stick until it eventually becomes a central part of my belief system. This round is "I am strange and I am loved. I may be misunderstood and that does not make me alone. I am surrounded by people who accept me"
#theres reasoning for this#like 'i am cringe but i am free' despite being incredibly memeable doesnt work for me#first of all saying it outloud can sound self depricating. and accidentally sounding self depricating#(something i rarely actually do)#makes me want to shrivel up into freeze fried weasel and hibernate for seveal hears#also the presence of the word 'but' presents these things as contradicory ideas. and i need them to go hand in hand#hense this sey of affirmations#the rule of three is good and memorable#the first statement says something about myself. something it is good and realistic for me to believe is inherent about myself#the second accounts for situations when that first one may feel threatened such as when i am misunderstood#using an AND here for those ideas that are NOT conteadictory is reslly important cor the syntax of my brain#being misunderstood does not say anything about me. it is a nuetral statement and i reminder of important truths#and these truths are easy to affirm if i get REAL spooked by touching base with a friend!#and lastly is something i want to believe about the world#.....i am a strange sort of person. i exist outside of a lot of cultural norms in a way i cant change if i wanted to. i dont want to#but having a hard heart or expecting harm and judgement from other people isnt good for me#and doesnt lend to good conversation#i want to enter spaces with the expectation that i will be accepted because i deserve to be accepted. that is the norm.#i want to believe that is normal. therefore i am making a statement about other people#both friends and strangers#they WILL accept me. and it will be easier for them to do so if i dont come in afraid of harm and instead open to conversation#anyways thats my logic! i wanted to externalize it and dont mind doing so publicly#i hope this may have helped someone <3#lush chats#anyways memorize and repeat these all the damn time. thats what i do. good mantras for grounding yourself.#i especially like to do affirmations when i look in the mirror. Spell of anti dissociation

I keep thinking of that reply in my Odysseus/Agamemnon post about how I regard differently Odysseus' and Agamemnon's actions, while acknowledging that at times Agamemnon is written as a sweet man and Odysseus is always straight up shitty, and how it was taken as some sort of defense for Agamemnon and as a form of pointing out the double standard; and that wasn't at all what the post was about for me, even though I can see where they were coming from. To be honest, given I didn't imagine it would spread anywhere other than my own blog, I didn't explain myself very well (or at all).
The fact is that when I talked about Odysseus not caring about hurting someone else's child to start and end a war I was indeed comparing his actions to Agamemnon's, but my words about supporting Odysseus' wrongs and cheering him in his terrible actions, while in a joking tone, weren't entirely a joke. I do think that Odysseus does some very shitty acts, and some quite terrible ones depending on the sources. That's a fact, that he does is at the core of his characterisation and it's what makes him so much fun; but not even when he is at his most cruel does he harm his family, his own son. Agamemnon, while sweet and loving at times in some texts, at his worst is willing to sacrifice Iphigenia. When readers regard with more sympathy Odysseus over Agamemnon despite both being responsible for children dying, I don't think there's a double standard in this aspect at all considering it's never his own kid Odysseus harms. And that's the key, I think.
Odysseus and Agamemnon have very different priorities, a very different view on loyalty and duty. It could be said that Agamemnon acts out of selfishness, but it could also be read in a kinder light, saying that Agamemnon is ruled by the gods first, and by his role as head of the achaeans; Agamemnon is not entirely himself. In opposition we see Odysseus acting perhaps mainly for himself and his own family and men; yes, he is a king, but he has not the role Agamemnon has. As a consequence, Agamemnon submits his family's wellbeing to the war, to the gods, while Odysseus stops the plow before hurting Telemachus but is (depending on the source) the cause of Iphigenia's sacrifice and Astyanax's death.
Both Odysseus and Agamemnon have reasons to support their actions, and both can be sympathised with; it's fiction after all. When it comes to fiction, at the end of the day which character a reader is drawn to or sympathises with is mainly an issue of personal taste, but I suppose it also implies a certain level of one's own views or preferences on morals, what makes us find certain actions more justifiable, or tasteful (perhaps that's a more accurate word), than others. Agamemnon sacrificing his daughter, no matter how sympathetic or understandable the reason, generally sits worse on people than Odysseus doing the same with someone else's kids, because they're someone else's. This different emotional reaction they provoke has place not just metanarratively, but also inside the very story; it is narratively significant, given it determines how their arrival home plays out, how their wives react to them, and thus their futures. Ultimately it determines whether they live or die.
I think both terrible acts go in line wonderfully with each characterisation, showcasing the role they hold in their world, what they value, what they care for, what they're willing to sacrifice for themselves and the others, how much of their own they're willing to give and bend. While looking at the wider picture it could perhaps be drawn that Agamemnon is the better person out of the two, but Odysseus' selfish actions are perhaps easier to empathise with, especially from a modern viewpoint. Odysseus is treacherous and prone to betrayal, but not against his own; Agamemnon follows the rules of the gods. How fitting in that context that Odysseus doesn't die at the end of his story, that he cheats the death heroes so often are fated to, almost as if cheating the narrative itself, bending the rules of the world he is ascribed to; how fitting in the context of those texts that point towards Sisyphus being his father. But that's another topic, and I've already talked a lot.
#Don't get me wrong. Odysseus is super shitty and this is a 'pick your poison' kind of situation#But I don't really think there's a double standard when it comes to the kids situation given that Odysseus doesn't sacrifice his own kid#I really think that's what lies at the core of this. Does that make him shittier and more selfish and a worse person? Actually yeah perhaps#But we are no kings with thousands of people depending on our decision yet cringe at the idea of hurting people close to us#It feels like betrayal. And this is where the moral preference takes the role. Which do you prefer? The one that would betray their family#for the greater good or the one who'd sell the world for their family and themselves? It's interesting because#while in fiction the first option is often the most frown upon while selfish actions for the beloved are easy to sympathise with‚#in reality these are usually worse regarded. I didn't want to go there because I already wrote so much it didn't fit in the tags#but I actually think the same thing happens with Galahad/Lancelot. Heathcliff/Edgar I'd say has a somewhat similar situation going on#There are many many examples but mainly I was thinking of Galahad and Lancelot#So this is not an 'Odysseus did nothing wrong'. This is an 'Odysseus did many things very wrong but he didn't kill his son#so while both him and Agamemnon were the cause of death of kids‚ their action are not the same so there's no double standard regarding#the particular action of sacrificing Iphigenia. In fiction that kind of betrayal makes characters often unlikeable'#I guess that action 'stains' the view under which Agamemnon's actions are seen and so his character is often seen under a darker light#He is presented a bit as an antagonistic presence opposed to Achilles who is very popular so I guess that also influences this?#Anyway I've been elated by the musical causing Odysseus art and posts but I do have noticed that he is very goodified in it and that#it has influenced how he is being regarded around here (the way it happened with The Song of Achilles as well I suppose)#And I must say I like that less. He is shitty in a fun way but not in a light way. He is very shitty#Definitely not better than Agamemnon depending on the perspective you take. I can't believe I'm 'defending' Agamemnon#He is not my thing at all I'm all for selfish actions for oneself and the loved ones through manipulation‚#lies and scams and letting the world drown if needed. In fiction Lancelot's‚ Odysseus' and Heathcliff's actions are a lot more preferible#to me than Galahad's‚ Agamemnon's and Edgar's. But yeah#I ALSO didn't want to go there because again it would have take me forever and I would run out of tags (yet here I am)#but there's also a Priam/Hector/Paris comparison in how they act and how they're regarded to be drawn here#Agamemnon/Iphigenia‚ Priam/Hector/Paris‚ Odysseus/Telemachus. And that is not even including everything with Elektra/Clytemnestra/Orestes#or Oedipus and his own family for that matter#But yes. I'll better shut up already. I'm talking a lot more than I intended#I just found that discussion super enthralling and I couldn't stop thinking about it. I still can't#I talk too much#I should probably delete this later
