UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; SIDE B

Hamlet Propaganda:

Kim Dokja Propaganda:

I haven't read orv but he's fucking gotta be from what I've osmosised

He tries to remove his emotions out of the narrative soooo much, literally the most repressed guy ever. Okay so for context orv is about how this guy, Kim Dokja, has been the only reader of an obscure post-apocalyptic webnovel for years and the novel suddenly becomes reality. And at first you'll probably get the weird impression that his behavior is pretty strange for, you know, a literal apocalypse happening in his world - like yes, he is concerned with survival but he doesn't seem all that scared and he kinda treats it like a video game where he has to grind to make himself stronger and he also treats his companions like a party in an rpg. Then there's also the way he approaches the protagonist of the webnovel, from the start he just kind of describes him as a ruthless psychopath and jerk that is unfortunately a pretty useful ally. And also there's the fact that he carefully omits any mention of his past and when somebody asks if he's worried about his family when the apocalypse starts he just kinda... brushes it off? Anyway so yeah, this bastard is definitely traumatized, although I don't know how much of spoiler territory that would be, considering the fact that literally when he first reveals his trauma he's also unreliable about it. And turns out he does indeed, care A LOT about this world and the people around him. Because well, he kinda didn't care to mention that this webnovel that has become reality was like... literally his whole world before it literally became his whole world. Like, it was the only thing keeping him going for 10+ years and the protagonist that he likes to call a stupid jerk was his comfort character who he pretended to be when he felt like he couldn't handle something in his life by being himself. The protagonist is also canonically the person he loves the most according to a prophecy and he literally can't fathom the thought of him dying, even the timeline versions of him that directly oppose him. And I haven't even mentioned the Fourth Wall yet but I feel like this propaganda is a little long already

misreading the intentions of his companion (yoo joonghyuk) so many time.

Rest of Propaganda under cut!

he is the worst like actually. he starts the story talking about how normal and average he is. he is not. he is constantly mischaracterizing his friends and he's so good at lying to the readers that you don't even realize it at first. almost every single time he cries we have to be told by other characters because he never says it himself. there is literally a scene where his narration says "i wasn't crying" and then the in-universe entity that narrates the actions of people (orv is really weird and meta) says that he was, in fact, crying. honestly genuinely anything he says about himself (or doesn't say) cannot be trusted. he is just so frustrating. he drives me mad. i love him dearly. but he drives me so mad.

Dictionary definition of unreliable narrator. Does not tell the reader anything and then things happen and he's like oh yeah btw there was also this and this earlier but i just didn't feel like mentioning it. There's even a thing called the "Fourth Wall" that is able to see through kdj's bs so occasionally you get gems like,

Kim Dokja: I didn't cry

The Fourth Wall: [Kim Dokja was crying]

Imagine being so unreliable as a narrator you need a more powerful narrator to call out the actual narrator.

This goes into spoiler territory, but; Kim Dokja is in possession of a skill called the Fourth Wall, which on the surface seems like it appears because he read the book that reverse-isekai’d into his own. However, as the story goes on it becomes clear that it’s pretty much a souped up version of his pre-existing dissociation. You cannot trust him to be honest about his feelings, his past traumas or his feelings about his past traumas, not to mention his tendency to just outright omit information that only gets revealed later on either when it becomes relevant or when an outsider POV reveals what’s actually happening.

Exhibit A: he says (in 1st person POV) that he’s not crying. The Fourth Wall immediately contradicts this (as it is literally words of the novel) by saying (in 3rd person POV) ‘Kim Dokja was crying’.

Exhibit B: Fails to mention entire actions when it shows him emotionally honest even in the slightest; we had to read from another character entirely when Kim Dokja was being physically affectionate with his companion. It’s so bad that there’s this entire paragraph about Kim Dokja describing himself hiding his eyes in his hands in jerky, weirdly specific detail and just AVOIDING EVERY WORD THAT MIGHT SHOW HE’S CRYING. The brilliance of ORV is that when you re-read the entire thing you get hints that ‘yes, this WAS hinted at the entire time’ but you have to dig it out of Kim Dokja’s repressed, depressed self-hating internal dialogue with your own two hands.

i am a simple man (not a man). i see a tumblr text post with the words “unreliable narrator in it”. i read nothing else. i reblog & tag #kim dokja okay but in all seriousness i’m just going with the musty basic example: so there’s this moment where he sacrifices himself to save this guy. as he lays on the ground bleeding out, he says “hey, you don’t like me, right? you should kill me to get some money” the guy says “no kim dokja i cant do that (going through the five stages of grief except there’s only one and it’s anger)” the constellations (twitch viewers irl) are like omg he (the guy) doesn’t want to kill his companion (kim dokja) and shower him (the guy) with money kim dokja: oh, he’s not killing me for the money. smart!

as i quote a brilliant youtube video (all of omniscient reader’s viewpoint in 6 minutes) “yoo joonghyuk sees kim dokja as a c_____”

Hides his true feelings, tells the readers what he thinks is convenient for the plot and that his own personal feelings don’t matter or are not so significant. Has unreliable thoughts abt his companion and is a liar. And is also an omniscient reader.

Kim Dokja always perceived his companions in this like nonchalant way like “oh yeah we get along but really we’re just fighting to survive (apocalypse setting) it doesn’t run that deep” when they all do genuinely care for him and he does in turn. He just, doesn’t think of it as an equal relationship? Dokja’ll sacrifice a lot for them but will get seriously flabbergasted if they do the same thing, so fricking problematic. Not to mention Yoo Joonghyuk, his “Life and Death Companion” (read: husband). Kim Dokja always seems to think that Joonghyuk has it out for him, which is kinda true, but he is literally blind to the fact that he’s attached to him. Like, it’s so obvious??? Also they have hella sexual tension but that’s another thing entirely

se get some many pov changes where kdj in his pov just assumed things based on what he knew the characters would do. however because of his interference the characters have changed and he wouldn’t know that if it hit him in the face

He's an unreliable narrator because he lies to himself and thus the audience. He literally rewrote his own childhood core memory. If someone says, "this guy is my friend!" He will go through so many hoola hoops in his mind just to rationalize it. Because he fundamentally believe that no one could love him and even if they did they couldn't know him and he's just gonna hurt them. He cries sometimes in canon but a lot of those times it's not even mentioned as crying he's that unreliable of a narrator. No joke, one time this guys he has a gay thing with called him his "companion" to someone who had just killed him (long story) and this bitch thought "oh wow he's doing it for the coins (another long story) he's so smart i wish I'd thought to that. He's terrible. He literally has an exchange with something called the Fourth Wall (an even longer story) where it said "you're crying" and he said "no I'm not" but he was crying. He makes me insane because the reader is supposed to project onto him. He made me see how much of an unreliable narrator I WAS. ORV is just like that tho.

Ok it has been a couple days now, so let's talk about Moonvale

(it's quite long btw)

Spoilers Alert

Ok where do we start?

Well, let's talk about the story and things I like first.

I was hooked. Ngl. I'm not sure why exactly but from the first call I got hooked an wanted to understand what was going on.

What was weird though was how "easy" MC opens up with Ash about what happened in Duskwood, like maybe a little bit of reluctance? Of disbelief? Of trust issues after what happened with Richy?????

We don't know these people. So opening up like that is kinda weird, but moving on.

I actually like the video calls, it makes quite involving. Maybe we should have more of that in Duskwood.

So yeah that's it, I want to know the story and what's going on but I have to admit everything else makes me feel like I might give up.

Now for the characters

Eric is kinda... Cute? (His voice was so pretty though). Adam I have no words, the actor was amazing, I felt everything thing he felt and it doesn't look forced.

The others well... We'll talk about AI later, but the others don't really feel like... Friends? They feel a lot like coworkers. Like Adam and Eric feel like friends, but Eric and the others feel like not exactly friends (maybe next episode we get more of them this might change).

Oh and the unknown guy, scared the shit out of me, but like, I'm used to being threatened by masked people (cof Richy cof) so just another Thursday.

And let's talk about the star: JAKE SHOWING UP AT THE END. He's alive, thank God. And saying "X, I will find you" AHH THE FEELINGS (I'm a Jake girlie, sorry) (I want to talk to Alan too btw)

Now let's talk about what I don't like about it

- The minigames: I don't think they got harder, but I do think the dialogue was way too short in between minigames, like I'm pretty sure I played more than read messages. (I don't like the new style and miss the dark vibes, but I can look past that)

- P2W: I'm a hater on this. I get what they were aiming for, that not everyone can pay so they made this so everyone could have a chance but the execution was so bad. I hated this, especially the fact that EVERYTHING was so expensive like 19 gems for a photo of an envelope? 12 gems for changing profile? Hell 25 gems for a conversation?? If it was like till 10 gems I think it would've been a little less annoying. I'm not sure but that made the game feel way more like a game than a chat, it lost a little of the magic Duskwood had.

- The "flirting": Can you play without flirting? Sure, but does the story get more interesting if you flirt with Eric? Yes. That's the problem, it feels forced. In Duskwood many of the flirts were a lot more subtle, and took more time to start, you literally can flirt with Eric within the first messages. The flirting wasn't the center of the story, it was a background thing, and that's why it was cool and exciting, here it feels more like a way to progress the story than a connection.

- AI: I don't like this. I really don't. I mean, they had so much time and chose to use AI? Almost two years and they couldn't get actors? Or at least use like images from Pinterest instead of AI?. Besides that, the fact even our profile is made with AI it really takes away the whole "involving" thing, cause these are not people, I can't see them as people cause even the bloody cat is made of AI, they don't feel real and that makes the game feel way too much like a game, while Duskwood really made you feel like you were chatting with real people (just look at how many people fell in love with the characters), I hope they change this in the future, seeing the backlash it got.

I guess that's it.

I do hope they realize they messed up with the p2w and AI thing mostly, and hopefully they will find a way to change it. I can't say for sure I won't be playing when ep 2 comes out, cause again, the story is good, and the perspective of other characters (Jake and Alan for me) showing up it will keep me hooked, but I can't speak for the majority of people, but it's definitely a step down from Duskwood.

Xu Fengnian is the first born son of the fearsome warlord Xu Xiao, the Duke of Beiliang- and probably the biggest hunk of scum in the whole empire. despite his father being a great martial artist and warlord, Xu Fengnian can’t wield a sword to save his life, he’s shameless, he's lazy, he’s an all-round playboy- he’s a good for nothing.

I love this drama so much- despite handling pretty serious situations that are matter of life and death, it’s so so so funny and chaotic. Sword Snow Stride is a drama which follows Xu Fengnian’s growth from a reluctant though highly intelligent heir of the duchy Beiliang to it’s capable, cunning and yes, shameless, future ruler. The writing of the show is so clever, and plot twists and political mechanisms are incredibly entertaining to watch.

I don't think I have ever laughed so much watching a drama before- this drama, despite everything, is a comedy show. Every moment in this drama can feature in a fan made “on crack” video without fail.

and I am exaggerating- just a little. It’s wuxia and also a ‘no-class-boundaries!’ kind of drama which I think is pretty snazzy of the scriptwriter. Xu Fengnian and the Beiliang’s ideology disregards snobs, rejects higher power and social norms- which is very cool of them and I support that dude.

Like, it has everything- plot? You got it. Really cool characters? You got it. Humour? You got it. An actual message? You got that too.

From the very beginning this show opened with a bang- the way it introduced everything was super super cool and engaging and so funny too. 

I felt really sad that I couldn’t give this show a full 10/10 on plot ( tbh no one can ever give any drama’s plot a perfect score) bcs there were some points where the plot fell through. Especially towards the last few episodes where Fengnian was saved one too many times and done so many favours in the name of his mother it began to feel a little- just no.

Nevertheless the rest of the logic was all in one piece, all the politics and all the scheming and the logic-ing of the characters was SO CLEVER. It was so so so fun to watch- it was fantastic. I can’t express how much I dig the way the things were revealed in this show. It had you thinking the whole time and I personally felt I learnt quite a bit from the show and Fengnian- as a person.

GUYS. EVERYONE IN THIS DRAMA-

AMAZING, SHOWSTOPPING, SPECTACULAR, NEVER THE SAME- 

Just. Incredible. They were all so fleshed out with such a strong sense of personality and identity. I love them all- that's all I can ever say or I will be here for ages.

AND THE WOMEN IN THIS DRAMA- LIKE- OMG-

they're so coooool.

I do have one complaint though, and it is that while drama has so many wonderful warrior women, most are not given any real power of their own. Their skills and their abilities ultimately serve to further Xu Fengnian’s progress and story. If not Xu Fengnian, then it’s Xu Xiao. Yes I know it’s a male lead story, yes I know we’re in ancient China, but perhaps we could have some acknowledgment that women’s contribution is often disregarded, or maybe a fun morally grey woman who just also wants to fight society and change her life?

And especially Jiang Ni (who is great btw), who really just exists to be Xu Fengnian’s love interest despite her very important background and I just think it's really sad. 

But besides this, the characters here-

All the actors were fantastic. I don’t think there was anyone who really overdid their character or anything- they were all so good. The cast’s energy throughout the drama was simple and naturalistic. My absolute favourite has to be the actor who played Xu Fengnian’s dad Xu Xiao- he was so good and so hilarious.

I really loved Zhang Rouyun (Xu Fengnian) acting as well, I really liked his performance at the start. He doesn’t place beauty and grace at the forefront of his acting and didn’t care if he looked less than perfect which I appreciate a lot after the slew of perfect beauty you get in xianxia dramas. Though he does have his ‘I’m super cool and majestic’ moments where he does try to think about how he looks on camera, the vibe I got from him was very authentic.

I LOVE THE PRODUCTION. I love the filter, I love the music- which is so... idk how to describe it. It perfectly encapsulates the vibe of snowy mountains, bamboo and swords and wind- The whole vibe is so calm and natural, it really makes you face the power and vastness of nature, the small, no-music fengshui montages that are scattered throughout the drama are so calming as well. 

But. The fight scenes... are very choppy. They’re not especially smooth- with an exception of Nangong Pushe, of course. Lots of them are literally people just standing there and raising their hands and spitting blood, like, T-T why. You are a wuxia drama; kindly use those weapons T-T. But oh well. At least they look cool when they stand there and raise their hands. 

And can we talk about Xu Fengnian’s lil’ catfish stands? WHAT WERE THE COSTUME DESIGNERS THINKING?

Just saw an opinion on Rose that’s complete trash so I’m gonna speak my piece on it, as someone who had to cut off contact with her toxic family. Steven had every right to put Rose’s picture in the Pink Dimension. While everything she did was her trying to make a better world for humanity and she never wanted Steven to go through all the trauma he did, she completely set him up for that anyway by doing everything she had done, and she’s so toxic for that and especially for having the gal to make that video saying he’d go on wonderful adventures while full well knowing that a good portion of his life would also probably have to involve dealing with her left over trauma and problems instead of fully dealing with them herself before she passed so he wouldn’t have to. She would have been better off staying Pink Diamond and just standing up to the other Diamonds imo rather than take the form of another gem (which btw led to the whole gem type being bubbled permanently which is high key so fucked up). At least if she’d done that one change of standing up as a Diamond to the others then Steven would’ve had one less accusation on his long list of war crimes committed by his mom/in his past life. Steven doesn’t need to think about his mother because she isn’t around anyway and the whole purpose of the shows and movie was explaining that it is okay for him to move on from all of the trauma of who his mother was and what she did, and to instead focus on himself and who he wants to be and what he wants to do with his life. okkkk video editing phase is shorterrr. i mainly used videostar (mobile) (i did purchase a lot of diff packs i think theyre called idk i forgot basically editing features n fx) but i did use other apps alongside just as extra effects or whatever for individual clips, and sometimes cutecut/cutecut pro. but videostar was the main platform and just where i started all my video projects. videostar (vs) was the real g when it came to video editing, bc all vs editors wanted to be after effects (ae) style editors so bad (me included), and vs made it possible to achieve similar results, but maybe not as smooth, high quality, detailed, etc.

i downloaded a bootleg sony vegas pro (desktop) and i tried sooo hard to learn how to use it but 1. it was hard and i gave up despite watching guides n tutorials over n over 2. it was a bootleg so it was kinda laggy and weird idk i deleted it.

i miss video editing esp in video star bc its advanced so much more since the last time i used to and appearance wise it can look kinda intimidating complex but i strangely *kinda* wanna learn bc although i did make progress n growth when it came to my video editing style, compared to my experience in photo editing, my video edits r also very noob esque in comparison. so i still kinda wanna learn..

my editing journey began and ended with kinemaster like I tried to do those cool edits of a certain idol before i realised i really don't have the will power not the brain power to make the idol the star of the edit bc i tend to focus more on the story or the song aspect so i did a few edits of idols on songs but then most of my editing was just based on,,, you guess it,, themes lmao! i used to so many multi fanfom edits based on songs like, finding bunch of purple and pink shots on kpop mvs and editing them on sunmi's pporapipam to make it seem like it's a linear storyline or like heartbreak in kpop mvs, or like gemini shots in kpop ( bunch of kpop scenes in mvs that reeked like gemini to me). i basically just focused on the song and found scenes from mvs that fit them i do still kinda miss it tbh so maybe I'll go back to it one day tbh i get what you mean by capcut but that's just like everything now you even got chatgpt where u don't even have to research on net for hours you can just shoot the ai a question,, we gonna be one handicapped generation bro.

re: hollow knight story, and why it’s not amazing. finally beat pantheon 5 btw. bitch radiance.

now thinking about a very certain type of storytelling in video games--you know, the one launched into popularity by demon’s souls, where characters are basically vague and most of the lore is in item descriptions and environmental storytelling.

and like in a vacuum this isn’t weird--a lot of games have lore in item descriptions, a lot of games have environmental storytelling, a lot of games have very vague plots, but demon’s/dark souls was the popular game that really tied them together in a very satisfying way. because so much of the lore was hidden in item descriptions, loot and their locations meant something and told a story. the base game mechanics were contextualized, and the story was reinforced thematically by everything around it. dark souls, for example, was a story about trying to rekindle lost flames, whatever they might have been, and so much of the world an imagery was reinforced around that.

you were never 100% what the whole story was, and that was for good reason: miyazaki said he modeled the experience off when he would read fantasy books in english. so you get the gist of things but the details are lost for you to fill in. and there’s something really unique about that sort of experience--that ambiguity that sort of rekindles the way you used to read when you were a kid, because everything seems *bigger*, and there’s more yet to understand.

and i’m thinking about this because of a certain HIDDEN GEM INDIE GAME called hollow knight. a lot of people compared it to dark souls on release not really because of its gameplay, but also because of its approach to storytelling. characters talk in sort of cryptic ways, items have lore attached to them, etc. you can sort of go through the game without really understanding what’s going on besides “oh orange thing bad, gotta kill my bro and replace him!!”

it even has lore channels dedicated to trying to solve the backstory of the game, just like dark souls. but for a long time i knew there was something lacking in hollow knight’s story--and i think it’s the same thing that’s lacking, for example, in the stories of later FromSoft games: theming. Hollow Knight isn’t really thematically coherent, and the vagueness seems less like an artistic decision and more a result of how the game was developed (the devs developed the game in such a way that they could stop adding new areas at any time--so each area just seems like “yes this And This and This.”)

and, yes, it’s about something. the emotional core of the game lies in the relationship the player character has with their “brother.” easily the best scene in the game is the one in the abyss. “no cost too great” is a well-known quote for a reason. the pale king makes vessels expecting them to be perfectly hollow, but none of them really are. the pale king heartlessly makes a sacrifice, fails spectacularly, and hides away, his last moments spent trying to convince himself that he did the right thing. there’s something really satisfying about joining your siblings and using your combined might to defeat the radiance, rejecting your “purpose” to merely contain it.

but most of hollow knight doesn’t really reinforce that. instead you get “oh here were some people living here” and “here were some people living there.” the respawn mechanic isn’t really contextualized in a way that matters (contrast this with the souls series--losing your will was how you “turned hollow,” except that you have lingering regrets or something.) hollow knight, however, does contextualize your silent protagonist (vs. hornet in silksong who talks back to people): your character actually can’t speak because of the circumstances upon which they were created.

that’s not to say that hollow knight is about nothing. there is an attempt in there--hollow knight also seems to want to say something about holding onto the past.

(radiance wanted to be worshipped again. pale king wanted to found the last kingdom. you are constantly finding ruins build upon older kingdoms, etc etc. the world seems to be dying somehow--not a coincidence that you find the collector mold right outside the white palace; as she wants to preserve things, almost too obsessively, so too did the pale king.)

it’s there, but it lacks a certain artistry and je ne sais quoi that really makes you linger on something or think about something. the only reason you would care about the lore is really to fill a wiki--and that’s something i always thought was a shame, because hollow knight could have been a really special game if it had nailed its themes more coherently instead of throwing vague ideas at the wall and seeing what stuck.

i think silksong might have potential to be a better game, if they manage to get that right.

So i am currently losing my mind over a book

No it's not a good book or anything it's just this one sentence that destroyed my faith in the author but that after a bit of context

So there is this polish author Katarzyna Michalak (i will call her Kasia) who is an absolute scribbler meaning that this woman can put out like five books a year

So Kasia is an absolute disaster of an author with not so big but not small audience and we can assume most of them are bored middle age women

There are two of her series that I'm familiar with and just to tell you they are an absolute gem in terms of destroying expectations

That is the Sunny trilogy and Year in Raspberry series (keep in mind I did my best to translate that but it may as well be wrong)

For the Raspberry one i know about the first book of the series from a video on YT and it's just so funny when you think of it

So Ewa the main character is just this woman who has like three months to get a book out because of a deal she made with her friend (and that is whole other thing we don't talk about because I think he later becomes love interest or sth idk) and that is basically the plot I might be wrong but well...

And the funniest part of the whole book is a character of a famous author in the book's universe who occasionally shows up from nowhere and helps the MC and drops some prophecies and I am not joking on this one and if you tried to guess that author happens to be no one else but our Kasia

Yes that woman basically did a self-insert into her own book as this omnipotent all-knowing person that sometimes helps the MC and it's hilarious and that is while ignoring how hilariously badly the book is written

So for the Sunny series actually it was my friend who read it but she was basically sending us every other page because it was so funny

In the Sunny series we explore the story of Patrycja (Pati) who has a dream and wants to make it happen and stuff (the MC "dream" in pretty much every book of this author is a little white house somewhere in the forest or a field or some place like that and a guy and that's about it) (this particular MC is also fun fact a witch particularly a dreamer who's dreams come true and stuff and it's all just Kasia's view in this so its pretty much all wrong but still)

So we see her story and stuff and at one point our dear Pati decides to write a book...

I don't think you can guess what the book was about

So the book that you are reading is called Poczekajka (no idea how to translate that) and our main character decides to write Poczekajka as her story just change the names

So the character in the book is basically writing the book you are reading...

Interesting right?

Well it gets better

You see if you do some looking you will find an actual music video from Kasia made specifically for Poczekajka that she herself is starring in

So what does our MC do?

She makes a music video and uses the exact same song that is in the irl video because Kasia put the words in the book

So you see just how weird it all is right?

Like this woman does so much self-insert in her book I don't know what is real anymore

But that was just the context for my pressing issue that doesn't let me sleep at night

You see i am currently reading one of her book on my own because we made it a thing in our friend group and I chose one titled Leśna Polana which translates into Forest Clearing or some shit idk

So in this we actually have three main female characters and three brothers that I assume will become love interest and so around chapter 6 one of the younger twin brothers (Patryk) comes across a women jumping out if a window to escape her abusive partner so he calls up his twin (Marcin who btw was at the moment meeting the other female character) to help him get her to the house of the third female character (who was once engaged to their older brother but they don't know it was her yet I told you her books are wierd) and through the whole chapter the jump out the window girl never once mentions her name to the men helping her (name's Julia btw)

And after they get her to her friend's house Marcin talks about the girl he met at the club and that he didn't ask her for a name and Patryk says somethin and Marcin is like "and you asked your Julia?"

And that one sentence destroyed my week

Because what fucking prophet is he that he fucking got that name especially since literally two chapter later they say that they don't know her name and I'm like bitch what

Well my friends came to similar conclusion but I don't have any faith in this author so I took matters in my own hands

I went and wrote sugar coated message in Instagram which she doesn't apparently read and if I say sugar-coated I mean it because I didn't believe in any of the words I wrote but I know if you criticize her even a little bit you can get banned or some shit and it just needed to be done for me to get noticed

So I know she won't read the Instagram message so I went through her website and there was that guest book corner where people wrote to her and she usually responded in like a day or so

And so I took my chances and asked about that one line that wrecked my mind
