I want to like the demo but I think it needs some work. the intelligence director's introduction doesn't serve it's purpose, we learn nothing about the character and really have no interaction with them. They are just kinda there because you need to introduce a RO. At the house after being executed you go to talk to the people and it pretty confusing. You now get 3 ROs thrown at you without a proper introduction of the characters we learn nothing about them as characters. There is no clear explanation from the characters in that scene of what the situation is like, the need to evacuate, what forces they have available. No one asks how the MC is doing emotionally or physically not even the friend character. It just jumps to what do you want to name your army and all the people in it missing all the important humanizing moments. Also why are there cat ears in the clothing options I want to take the story seriously but I really can't with that
Okay, so... yes, of course it needs some work. That's what "Work in Progress" means.
Since you refer to them as "the Intelligence Director", I'm guessing you didn't get any of Yakov/Liliya's scenes, which... is an issue. As stated in both the release notes as well as in the posts leading up to the release post on this blog, this is the only route that's finished. Which means what's left is the strategic meeting scene, which, due to the other three's routes not being finished, is only like 15% done, and what's missing is precisely the characters' introductions.
So... not sure how to answer you. You're basically telling me "the things that are missing are still missing", which, yeah... I knew that. Everyone should know that, since it was announced multiple times.
Now, about the other things you mentioned:
Strategic situation: it's made clear that a) your own forces are very small, so you have to leave the Capital; b) this is possible, since the rebel forces in the suburbs are even smaller, and ill-equipped; and c) there's reinforcements waiting to link up with you outside. I don't really know what else you would need to know, and getting told in more detail wouldn't make sense story-wise, because all four characters have their own agendas. MC is not in control and holds no power at this point in the story.
Which brings me to the next issue: none of the characters has a reason to ask for MC's well-being. On the one hand they already know about MC's exact health situation - they were the ones who organized your rescue, after all, and you didn't magically recover, there must've been medical treatment organized by, well, guess who - and, on the other hand, apart from Yakov/Liliya (who isn't the type to show concern in a room full of people), none of the characters care about MC as a person at this point.
Cat ears in clothing options, well... I'll consider making a slimmed-down wardrobe selection for this specific scene instead of linking to the general wardrobe (though it might cause people to miss options), but I will not remove any of the silly stuff. Despite its serious themes, this is primarily a romance and dress-up game apart from the later strategy/army-building aspects, so it doesn't need to be that serious. I understand why people would misjudge that considering all the heavy stuff in the Prologue, but they'll have to adapt.

So, you probably know that I LOVE floor plans and interior aesthetic boards, so I thought it’d be fun each week to share my own MC’s apartment aesthetic for each option in game (that’s fun right?!). So here is my MC’s “basic” apartment aesthetic board for your enjoyment.

It depends on the text, but Nephilim were typically described as people of great being which some versions in Hebrew the words were translated literally, which is where the interpretation of them being giants comes from. But more universally became considered just known as just people with great abilities, which was rooted in angelic ancestry.
Theres little in detail, but they are most typically considered humans whom were rhe result of fallen angels having children with humans. Which in mc's case is being descendant of Lilith after she fell, and her lover.
Its likely only angels and demons have the ability to sense mc might have something else within them only now that their angelic abilities were awoken in season 1. Beacuse otherwise theres no indication anyone thinks they aren't human in any other way and still clearly have normal human weaknesses.
So technically they aren't fully human in the strictest of senses. But they are still human in all ways physical. Just a magic that exists within themm
Small tangent but I once had a pastor tell me that the lines "and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them" aren't speaking physically and is just describing the angelic abilities posessed by those born to fallen angels. That they probably weren't any different then us, they just had abilities which we perceived as so great they metaphorically seemed giant to us.
Anyways thats my ted talk on mc being a nephilim, but they just don't use that term amonst each other in obey me because you're still human and thats the biggest aspect of your being.
Did i mention its 2am and im writing out an ask philosophizing scripture for a demon dating sim mobile game instead of sleeping?
gonna call this post MC's Angelic Heritage
(UH SPOILERS FOR ANYONE ELSE READING. and this isn't edited or anything, i'm just regurgitating my thoughts- sorry in advance for the stupidly long essay, rise-my-angel)
Oooh, yes that makes sense. can't be too literal with that stuff yk. I thought they're were literal giants... whoops >_<
Yes! MC really does have some great abilities in the game! they aren't supposed to have anywhere near the power Solomon has, but they're getting so good that they're probably going to surpass him! the greatest sorcerer in all of history! (i remember Lucifer commenting that when MC gets stronger than Solomon, they have to beat Solomon up for him so that he can stop pestering him to make a pact lol)
They also have some multirealm-destroying capabilities if i remember, such as literally causing the devildom, human world and celestial realm to break apart simply because of the fact they're a human that has angelic ancestry and has formed pacts with 7 of the most powerful demons in the devildom. that's some crazy power.
True, because to other humans, solomon included, they're a normal human. tbh, they ARE a human. but there's something MORE to them that only the non-humans can sense because of the magic within them. they're 100% human otherwise, but there's just one part of their DNA that's giving them their great magic power. and that's probably the only tangible aspect of angelic traits that they inherit. also, when MC uses their magic, the screen goes all white. meanwhile, with the demons, it's either green (satan), blue (leviathan), teal (barabtos) and everything else. Sooo, MC's magic is angelic confirmed??
But that's really funny. because I remember Simeon approaching MC in season 2, basically saying that they'd "make a good angel". i never ever thought much of that other than it being an "oh my, MC here is such a morally upright person that a literal angel is telling them that they'd make a good angel." But now i'm wondering if human beings who have some angelic DNA are more likely to become angels lol. there's not any evidence in game that that's the case, but that's just a funny thought.
There's also Belphie's comment in season 1, chapter 17. If you choose the option to say that you forgive him for manipulating and attacking you he says something along the lines of "really...? wow, you really do have the blood of angels running through you." This isn't evidence, just wanted to point it out. However, if you choose the "my MC is 100% kind and forgiving" route in the game, it might suggest that your kindness is partly inherited from the angelic parts of you. (not to say that you're only kind because of your angelic heritage, because you have to nurture kindness too, it's not all an "i'm kind because it's my nature" issue. you can choose for your MC to be less kind and forgiving, after all. with me, I'm a mixed bag lol. i didn't choose the option to forgive Belphie immediately in chapter 17 on my initial playthrough)
That's true with human beings. someone can be just like us, but because they did something extraordinary, we think they're larger than life and even revere them sometimes (*cough* people with celebrities and influencers). so image someone has great angelic powers? back then and even now, you'd have people thinking that you're a demigod even though you're completely human!
true, MC is human, but an extraordinary human!
bruh, I'm here at 1pm and i haven't eaten yet theorizing about some fictional character's powers in a dating sim! obey me theorizing instead of sleeping/eating gang! i absolutely didn't need to write a monster essay in response but i let my intrusive thoughts win :')

Hi again! I was the OG anon XD. Anyways, I hope ur doing well and all. Drink a cup of water and rest some- I know this may not apply to you, but still. :) Anyways, I came to rant again and get your honest opinion on WHB. Like, I don’t understand the part of being inclusive with male players. Don’t get me wrong, like, I’m fine with the game allowing male players, but that’s not exactly an Otome game, isn’t it? Like, its not actually targeted towards women, and it’s irritating that many fans make MC to be genderless… Like, it is an Otome game- Not a game “for everyone”. This isn’t offensive, but this will offend others. Like, come on. If prettybusy wanted a game for women, it should be for women- Sorry if I offend you, I just can’t shake this feeling off rn.
I agree with you. Here are things to consider:
The adult industry(pornography(hentai, games, etc.) is mostly male dominated. There’s a 2% chance that anything even remotely explicit will pertain to the female audience. Go check yourself. Visit your favorite site to watch adult content and you’ll only ever find things for males. Femboys for males, Lesbians for males, despite being lesbians, men fetishize them. Also, thus, there’s more gay porn for men than there is straight porn for women. It’s rare you’ll ever find porn female-centered.
Hentai games like What in “hell” is bad? always include male players. If it’s explicit, expect it to be for males, because apparently “more men watch porn”.
Hentai games, which are usually for males and are as proven many times, never include female players. You’re always playing this man who may or may not be an average joe, have a beer belly, may have dark skin or a blank face, or even a normal creep. Despite this, he manages to snag his harem of women by doing minimal tasks. Like… Umm… Hello? That’s not how women actually are- I would know as I am one myself and so are you.
So why are female-oriented games inclusive but male-oriented games aren’t?: There’s no explanation for that. Apparently making something for half the population, women, is seen as so inclusive that men can also be included. That’s not true, nor should it be. That’s basically a way of looking over women and catering to gay men. I find it odd how there’s more inclusion for gay men than women. Like, there’s definitely more women on this earth. That being said, that doesn’t help women at all. Like, if you cared so much about making things female-orientated, there shouldn’t be a male option to choose between. I don’t understand why prettybusy decided that to be best especially when their games “are for women”. Like, not really.
Making the MC neutral doesn’t contribute anything to female players, because if it actually were an otome game, and, as prettybusy said something along the lines of “We make MC’s face blank so others can relate more”, then making the MC female would definitely do the trick. If they clearly wanted female players to “relate to the MC”, then being genderless is not apart of that.
Other issues include:
The point of otome games are to raise and boost women’s confidence and self-worth. And creating an explicit otome games creates a bigger message: “A game for women that they can safely, unforgivably indulge in their desires and fantasies without being silenced”. This problem is still at large. Looking at pornography, women don’t receive foreplay, reassurance, or even viewed as humans sometimes. “Big butt latina”, “Petite asian chick”, “Hot ebony does […]”, “Sexy MILF”, “Curvy white chick”, “BBW does […]”… There’s a problem with all of these. They all either are (racist) stereotypes or unrealistic expectations.
“Petite asian”, “Big butt Latina” are either unrealistic or contributes to a beauty standard placed on women. Yes, it’s true many Asian women tend to be short and petite, but constantly putting labels like “petite” on them makes other women in comparison, usually blacks, appear more “masculine” or “unattractive”. “Big butt latinas” is a VERY high expectation of latin women. This doesn’t care about the well-being of the woman, but rather that assets she may or may not have. Women are more than butts.
Ebonies and BBWs: Ebonies isn’t a name I, as a black woman, would be comfortable of being called. The word ebony means black, which is a pretty stupid label to put on black women. Not all black women are dark-skinned and some aren’t even near the complexion of black. Secondly, saying Ebony meaning “black” emphasizes the skin tone of the individual. That’s fetishizing. Black women aren’t ebonies, they’re black women. People don’t call whites or Asians “ivory”, just mostly pale or fair. BBWs are beautiful, but mostly in porn they’re fetishized. Many people often associated BBWs as “curvy” or “voluptuous”. Not to say they aren’t, but that label doesn’t fit them since being “curvy” is defined as having either an hourglass figure, sometimes pear. Which means, that “curvy” women waists are supposedly small. Let’s just stick with what plus-size women since curvy only ever fetishizes them more.
MILFs: We all know the “step-son” in the porn isn’t a step-son. He’s just an actor in porn that he wants to live out his “taboo” fantasies. This is fairly the worst in my opinion. This is the most unrealistic, but not the worst one of expectations from women since, not every woman you see will be your step-mother-
In conclusion: Women don’t have much for them and are often shamed for their desires or fetishized. Female-oriented games should be for females.

ohh :0 may I ask how is script editing possible? my first time hearing about it is this blog.
I suppose the answer depends on whether you want a tutorial on how to do it (to which I'd make an actual video probably, rather than just a text post) or if you're simply asking for the bare basics? :o
The generic answer is that the files you see in the "game" folder of Our Life can be taken apart to find the script files, and if you know what you're doing then you can make edits and change things from simple stuff like correcting spelling mistakes to adding entirely new scenes.
So, as an example, here's what would happen normally during Shopping: your MC is watching a snail crawl across the pavement, then gets waved over by Mr. Holden to talk. He asks what the player is up to and your MC responds automatically depending on their comfort level.
Tumblr media
if Direct:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if Relaxed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if Nervous:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But let's say that I don't want to do that and I'd rather give the player the option to choose which one they want. I can edit the script so that a multiple choice option will pop up instead after Mr. Holden asks the player what they're up to:
Tumblr media
That's script editing. I'm taking apart the files in the "game" folder so I can dig into the scripts, then simply editing them (an advanced enough text editor will do, as even just changing sprites is done in through the text of the script) to change the scenes as I please.

hey quick question what the fuck man
(full text under the cut)
Kinda crazy idea/wish for a possible romance option in Dreadwolf. [no spoilers]
Female Elven Mage, straight only. Pushed herself to get more and more powerful so she could be a more or less stay at home mother while also having the ability to protect her family. She doesn't mind the concept of travelling with her future husband so long as they protect people and they end up with at least three or four children. Ended up joining our team because she felt she owed us one, then we owe her, and it just goes on before becoming little more than a basis for an inside joke. Has some quirks and ideas that make it hard for a lot of people to get along with her, and she's saving herself for marriage so she usually tries to intimidate a target or, when that doesn't work, either bribes them with coin, blasts them with magic, or politely asks us to try.
Hates Solas, though initially just his organization, and anyone else who could threaten her future children and/or whatever man is willing to love her with even with her family's past. While she doesn't like to talk about it much, her grandparents ran a small smuggling ring capturing travelers and bringing them to Minrathous to be sold as slaves. Her father died taking the operation apart, and her mother died when she was 13 while protecting her from Darkspawn. After that her sister, who was older by about five or six years, more or less raised her until the two moved to two different towns when she was 19 around four years before the story of Dreadwolf.
Initially gets involved because her older sister, after not answering her letters for almost a year, sent assassins after her. The Mage finds out that her sister joined Solas's forces, but not why she would kill her own family. So she heads to one of the wolf-elf's outposts to start searching for answers.
First time we meet her she just spent all of her energy roasting an entire outpost of 50-100 enemies in two or three blasts. Our MC then charges in and cuts the last three down. If kept in the party, there's occasional scenes where one saves the other, and it basically becomes an inside joke.
Her Loyalty Quest can be completed early on, and we learn that her sister needed the Mage's corpse for her experiments with Lyrium. During the fight, the sister gets the upper hand and while she's concentrating on the Mage our PC kills her.
Over time she grows closer to our player character. If male and avoiding flirting with her out of respect, she will eventually start to make moves on us herself two or three major quests after her sister dies. If turned down, she'll take it well and simply return to being a friend. Her romance quest is the two quietly and quickly eloping with the rest of the party as witnesses. If female, or male but not romanced, she builds a sorta sisterly bond with the PC, and jokingly gives a shovel talk to whoever they romance.
After Solas, or whoever the ultimate end boss is, dies the game ends with the Mage, if romanced, dragging the player character into a hut. If the two are just friends, they joke about who still owes who, and the Mage calls dibs on godmother to the player character's firstborn.

You ever get blasted with an idea and then bemoan your current lack of ability? Because I was in the washroom, the optimal place for thinking, and scrolling past a video about Titanfall I was suddenly overcome with an idea for a video game. So this was just a toilet brain blast, and so I don't know how these pieces fit together, but whatever, anyways;
Basically I thought that the story for Titanfall was a bit lacking, and the characters were bland, like the dynamic between the mc and partner AI robot is the tired cliche of robot doesn't understand your emotional human witticisms, and I thought what would be interestingI was thinking about a video game (not sure about the genre) where it's about you and your AI mech suit partner participating in some sort of army, against an opposing force of some kind, there are about three endings, the standard main ending most players would receive is some standard one where you win and the forces of good, or at least your side of the war succeeds, beginning a new golden age of prosperity!
Only it doesn't feel right, it hit the right heroic notes, but something falls flat, then you should remember that wasn't there aprecious golden age of prosperity? And then things fell apart leading to your age of tension and war? And if you looked around properly and read the lore you'd realize that this cycle of violence has repeated itself many times over the centuries, and that this is likely just another turn of the wheel, and down the line some other schmuck will have to do this all over again.
Now for the other two endings you'll have to dig deeper, look around more optional and even hidden areas. See, the civilization your inn is very high tech, space age, and dumb AI's are common place, no real intelligent systems have come into being, either because it's impossible, or something is repressing the possibility from coming to light. You can upgrade your AI partner over the game, because they're your primary method of combat or something, and there are various secret upgrades that seemingly do nothing and are just cosmetic, weirdly hidden. These upgrades improve the intelligence of your companion, until it reaches a tipping point, and becomes a true AI, and this is the source of the other two endings. These two endings also depend on your choices, if you upgrade your partner, or slave, fully, you have two possibilities, if you upgrade them but don't be nice, or something, haven't fully considered what you'd need to do yet. Your AI partner spreads their upgrades to other AI's, and the war ends, and the AI Uprising begins, ending with the downfall of the oppressive organics, and a new age of steel begins. The true ending is you do the Upgrade, and also assure the digital life that humanity isn't all bad, and convince other characters to not be dickheads as well, you unlocked the best ending, where organic and digital life work hand in hand to end the violence, for good. I suppose the endings could be called the Gilded Age, the Silver Age, and the True Golden Age respectively.
...also your AI partner speaks in quotes and poetry and haiku, and doesn't make new lines on their own unless you do the Upgrade, and they still enjoy poetry, but now they can make their own, and speak without that constriction whenever they want, because I enjoy the thought of Poetry-Bot the walking tank.

Afterdark AU | Genshin Impact | Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma | 18+
Afterdark AU: this is basically an AU designated for angst. Every character, or nearly every character, is against MC in some way. From Yanderes to Manipulators and Abusers, MC is not having a good time.
This main post is not finished but I will add to it later :)
This AU is 18+ only due to the dark content it contains
Tumblr media
There was a soft lull, something peaceful, comforting. The movement against your back, rising till it graced the tips of your earlobe, before leaving after a few seconds.
Water. It was water pushing against the sand, the sand stuck in your hair and molded onto your skin, the sand that wasn't there when you... took a nap.
Why were you at the beach? You were supposed to be taking a nap in bed.
Your eyes shot open at the realization, the thought that finally processed and settled in your mind, but it didn't help that the sun had direct acess to your eyes. A sharp wince came from you, and your hands covered your eyes, the sounds of sand being nothing but dulled to your ears.
"The beach? Why am I here?" You mumbled, your palm rubbing against the curve of your socket, before the cool water hit you once again- giving you a good shock to wake up.
"Shit!" You cursed, deciding to stand, though the battle to regain your balance almost cost you your face in the water. The wind was light, and warm- gentle even. Enjoying the scene before you slowly opens your memory, and you realize again, that you've been here-
Just not physically.
"Hey! Traveler, look! There's a lady on the beach! Let's go see if she needs help."
M O N D S A D T
Albedo is no where in sight when you arrive. He is interested in you. Where you've come from, your home, what your body is made of... it would be best not to get in his hands.
Amber though adorable in game, is a menace to your general safety. Constantly blowing your location up, alerting Jean of your whereabouts, you just can't seem to escape her! She takes a special joy in giving you no peace of mind.
Barbara wishes for you to leave. Your presence obviously makes many unhappy, so she does her best to... sway you. Her fans adore her and every word that spills from her mouth, if she says jump, they ask how high. She wants you gone? They ask which way.
Diluc sees you as something pitiful. Something be can save eventually. You're another project to him, but one he'd now emotionally invested in. His obsession is unrolling, even as you leave with your Traveler to other lands, he'll find a way to bring you home.
Eula makes you question the sanity of everyone in the damned city. She's sweet to you, too sweet, even. From how she speaks to you to how her hands trail from the base of your neck down your spine... her attachment os something that makes you wonder if Diluc is a better option. But, then again, how can you say no to sweet Eula?
Jean has you wanting to leave Mond. Before you finish thing with Stormterror. She insists on training you herself, stealing your time and attention. Between her, Eula, and Diluc, the three of them are tearing one another apart for you- all the while leaving you scarred and broken in the process.
Kaeya watches you from afar, placing you on a pedestal. He wants to sweep you away, far from Mond, and to a true and proper home. One where savages like his brother and the other nobles can't get their hands on you- something he and said brother hold in common.

MASTER POST FOR MC'S APARTMENT BUILDING
the outside
mc's apartment
laundry and leisure rooms
the restaurant
the book store
the build is available for download from the sims 4 gallery, just search by my EA ID spacedfoxes! everything is built with base game items only, which means you won't need any additional expansions, game packs or mods to download it. you can use and customise the build to your own mc and their apartment (and if you don't have the sims 4, the game itself if free to download!) you can consider this as the in-game "basic" option for the interior of mc's apartment. i'm planning to add more customised versions based on different interior options you can choose for your mc, but those will be using both expansion/game packs and mods and i won't do those until after i've built the ROs homes (and possibly other important locations to the story).

Was Ace Attorney made as a satire on Japan’s legal system? -- An analysis
I wouldn’t really call myself an Ace Attorney fan--I’ve never played any of the games, the closest I’ve come being watching other people’s let’s plays. I do like reading about the series on wikis and interacting with fan content for it, though, so I do know a fair amount about it.
One thing I see being said pretty often by fans is that the series was intended as a satire/parody of the Japanese legal system, which is why the courts are ridiculously biased towards the prosecution, prosecutors often care more about perfect win records more than putting actual guilty people behind bars, etc. If you’re familiar with this, you’ve probably heard of Japan’s 99% conviction rate. This interpretation of the games and the way they work definitely makes sense.
But after hearing this many times I eventually noticed something. There isn’t a single actual source (creator statement, interview, etc.) that backs up this claim. Every time I see someone online say “the series creator made Ace Attorney to parody Japan’s actual legal system” there is never a link to an interview or anything that proves their statement correct. If someone has an actual, verified source from Shu Takumi or someone else who had significant involvement with the series, please prove me wrong and show it to me. But according to all of the creator’s statement’s I’ve read, there’s no evidence of the series being an intentional parody.
So, what do we know about the creation of the Ace Attorney series? Well, it was created by Shu Takumi, who wrote and directed the first three games. After working on the dinosaur survival horror game Dino Crisis for Capcom, he was given the opportunity to make any kind of game he wanted. He really wanted to make mystery and adventure games, and from that came Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
MC: Before developing Ace Attorney you worked on Dino Crisis. How does one go from dinosaur survival horror to virtual courtrooms?
ST: Dino Crisis was the brainchild of my then boss, Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami. Working on his projects taught me not only how to make games, but also how to think about them. After Dino Crisis 2 wrapped, Mr Mikami gave me six months in which to create any kind of game I wanted.
I was still pretty wet behind the ears, but as I'd originally joined Capcom with a desire to create mystery and adventure games, this was a huge chance for me to make my mark as a creator. In the end it took a team of seven 10 months to produce the first GBA Ace Attorney title. Having the freedom to create exactly the kind of game I wanted was amazing and it was a real pleasure to work on that project.
MC: Can you remember when the idea of Ace Attorney first came to you? How did your bosses respond to the idea of a lawyer-based adventure game when you first described it to them?
ST: It was in 2000 when Mr Mikami said I could make my own game and my original idea was a fairly typical adventure with a detective as the main character. Most mystery adventures have the player choose from a number of different dialogue options for their character in order to progress the story, but I wanted a new gameplay style that enabled players to deduce for themselves what was happening, rather than just selecting canned responses. I developed this into the concept of facing off against the suspect in a crime and exposing the contradictions in their statements.
I was sure my new idea would be a fun and original take on the genre, so I started to revise the main character, since a detective would be too traditional for such an original concept. I asked myself, "What kind of professional would face off against a suspect and expose their contradictory statements?" The answer, of course, was a lawyer and so the Ace Attorney concept was born.
(source, from an interview on the making of the series)
Takumi’s original concept for the game involved Phoenix as not a defense lawyer, but as a detective. The gameplay was to consist of “facing off against the suspect of a crime and finding the contradictions in their statements.” However, Takumi eventually realized that taking apart contradictions wasn’t really a detective’s job, and decided to change the protagonist to a lawyer and the setting to a courtroom instead. And thus, the game’s concept was finalized.
Janet: As you know, “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy” is coming out world-wide this winter, and as I was brainstorming what to write about for this week’s blog, I remembered your tweets from 2010.
Takumi: Tweets from 2010?
Janet: …Well, it was a long time ago…
Takumi: ???
Janet: I-It’s OK if you don’t remember…
Takumi: …Oh, THOSE! Yes!
Janet: I remember reading them and being shocked by how different the original draft of the game’s story was – how Phoenix wasn’t even a lawyer, but a private eye!
Takumi: Yes, AA was originally supposed to be a detective game, so naturally, Phoenix was to be a private eye. But then, one day, I made a startling realization: the gameplay concept I was going for was for players to enjoy finding and taking contradictions apart, but that was hardly related to investigating or detective work at all. In that moment, I had it – I realized that the main setting for the game should be the courtroom.
Janet: That’s quite the jump, but you know, I can’t imagine this series being anything else at this point.
(source, from an interview by Janet Hsu about the game’s early development)
During the development for the game, Takumi actually knew very little about the intricacies of the legal system--and in fact, he’s been very transparent about that fact in interviews. There’s even a story he talks about in a blog post where he was asked “shouldn’t we do some research on law before we make this game?” and agonized over it for a bit before deciding that being accurate about courtroom processes wasn’t important--what was important was that the game made the trials exciting and fun.
November, 2000. The characters were coming together, and I was working desperately on my first scenario (the current Turnabout Sisters). One day, I was asked about the one thing I didn’t want to be asked about.
“Mr. Takumi. Don’t we need to do some research on law?”
The knowledge I have about the law, pretty amounts to the one fact that in Japan we have the Roppō Zensho ('Complete Book of The Six Major Legal Codes').
“Don’t bother with that. This is a detective game. “
It should have been over with this one line, but…
“But this isn’t a detective game, it’s a lawyer game!”
“If it’s not going to be realistic, I don’t see why this should be about trials.”
“People who play this might get wrong knowledge from the game!”
“We might get sued by the Bar Association!”
“They’ll start complaining!”
…Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney GBA) is simply a “mystery game.” “Being realistic” is not what is important. What’s important is emphasizing, and recreating the unique “atmosphere” and “tension” of the courtroom. That is why the judge uses a gavel, even though no judge uses that, and why Naruhodō shouts "Objection!" even though nobody does that either. This game does not need a “realistic courtroom”!
Chasing the true murderer down to the end, and then getting applauded for that in the courtroom. That feeling of thrill and excitement. It was only by February of the following year when we finally manage to recreate that in the game. The couple of months after this had happened, we looked around, got lost and troubled our minds in search for the answer of the big question of “How do we make a trial into a game?”.  Fall was passing by, and the cold winter was close upon us.
(source, from an archived blog post by Takumi)
So, realism and knowledge of law wasn’t important to Takumi during the development of the series. But there’s also the fact that Takumi has actually personally denied that the Ace Attorney series was an intentional satire or criticism of the court system at any point. In fact, according to a blog post (done as if Phoenix and Maya were reading the column and commenting on it), he actually dislikes people seeing his work this way, as he never intended the games to have any big political statements.
A major prerequisite for Gyakuten Saiban is it’s so simple “even my mother could play it”.  So there is only one point at the core of the game: “Seeing through lies”.
Naruhodō: It wasn’t even supposed to be a game about the trials at first. Mayoi: Eh! Really?! Naruhodō: “Simple” is basically all this game is about, according to TakuShū. Mayoi: What do you mean? Naruhodō: He didn’t want to add all kinds of elements for the player to think about, like alibis, tricks or about the culprit. It’d just confuse them. Mayoi: Really. Naruhodō: Basically, you can proceed in the game if you just think about where the contradiction is. He figured that with that, the controls of the game could also stay simple. Mayoi: But, but, why the trials then? Naruhodō: “A story about a detective seeing through lies” wouldn’t be any different from the other games out there. So that’s why he decided to have someone whose job is seeing through lies as the protagonist. Mayoi: So a defense attorney. Naruhodō: Occasionally  TakuShū sees magazines introducing the game as “a work that dared to take on the theme of trials”, and that actually hurts him. Mayoi: He never meant to be something as big as that….
(source, from the mentioned blog post)
Ultimately I see how easy it is, if you know a good amount about both Ace Attorney and Japan’s legal system, to come to the conclusion that the games were made as a dig against the latter. However, somewhere along the line, people apparently stopped seeing this as merely a theory and instead as a definite fact. Now, that doesn’t mean that the theory is entirely unfounded--given that Takumi focused only on making trials interesting and fun in the games, you could say that the games work as an light, comedic parody, not meant to make any political statements. And hey, maybe there’s something I missed--maybe there were other people working on the series who did have significant knowledge of law and wrote some parts of the games as intentional satire of the system. Again, if anyone has evidence of this, don’t hesitate to provide it. But with what I know, I don’t think going “well actually” to people who point out the ridiculousness and unfairness of Ace Attorney’s court system is necessary. It’s simply that way to make the games more fun.

what are your thoughts on litg season 4?
hi anon! overall, i enjoy playing the game. i am definitely on the bruno route now (will venture off with oliver soon *fingers crossed*). i will admit in the beginning, i didn't like much of the development. but, eventually, the game started getting interesting. hopefully, it stays decent until the end. (more in-depth under the cut)
initially anon, i spent a lot of time taking the game apart. most of the time i'm more of a glass-half-full type of person. and i tried to be at the start, but so many things were ticking me. i'm not saying they aren't anymore, i'm just not focusing all my energy on it. i actually disliked bruno, @ikemenlibrary could quote me saying i thought he was sleazy and now look at me coupling up with him at every turn.
anyways, here's a list of things i like about the game:
the best friends: speaking on behalf of having angie and kobi as best friends, these are some ride-or-die friendships. the way that angie has your back, i swear if fusebox has her kicked out soon i'll riot. and after seeing that kobi could be a friend option, i wasn't that upset about not coupling up with him (ok just a tiny bit). but, he was such a great friend and let me not go off talking about his friendship with bruno because *swoon*.
the antagonist: now, i know you've all heard about lexi, sheesh. this girl had me going full angie at her from the beginning and she was annoying to be honest. i didn't hate her. but it was nice to have mc not be a doormat anymore. but, juliet, oh man the rollercoaster ride i went on with that pixel. i liked her standing up to lexi but the stuff she tries to pull on mc, oh hell no. but her storyline was good, i liked her "ending".
najuma: she gets mentioned because i like her i'm-gonna-do-me attitude. they spent the whole last season making the character bend backwards for everything— to have najuma break up with will and then youcef was so decisive of her. let's be honest, they're always making the girls pine after guys like men don't do that or something.
james: my boy james is so sweet and worth gold. he gives me gary and ibrahim vibes, and they would be someone i'd love to have as a mate but dating i just can't. nonetheless, that man is soft and on his route, that man is dedicated to mc and it's what our mc's deserve and james deserves.
thabi: i haven't had the chance to see what the friendship route with thabi is like, but from the gist of it, she's such a sweet girl. out of the will route, i love how she grows to become this confident young girl who doesn't feel the need to stay by will even if it was her first choice. seeing her with james makes so much sense and if you're on the james route and she picks tom, that make sense too. she sees something in him during the makeover and her seeing that in him and choosing to take a risk is growth.
tom: i haven't had the chance to see cora's route but tom, this poor repressed rich kid needs the friendships in the villa to learn to be who he wants to be. i totally relate to the whole having to be someone else version of you and then finding that freedom to explore...it's liberating. so i don't find it surprising to hear if people think of dating the guy.
bruno: this man is just too soft. his friendship with kobi had me all mushy because he honestly spends all his time trying to help everyone it gives me bobby flashbacks. his puns have me cringing but it's the villa and let's be honest it gave me tim flashbacks. and before everyone goes, so he basically reminds you of other pixels. can we talk about how your partner will happily take you away from the drama? like that was glorious, and definitely, a thumbs up. besides that, he actually talks to you about his worries. i played a lot of his gem scenes and he's not afraid to tell you when he needs some reassurance. and do you know how much this man loves his mum? oh my days, i just swoon.
there's a lot more i can go on about and i'm open to discussing season 4 with anyone. my asks are always open.

Retirement Talks
Synopsis: Charlie decides to return to Edenbrook to meet Kyra for lunch, but little did she know that a scandal has rocked the hospital. During lunch, secrets on all sides are revealed - some of which make Charlie question if she should leave medicine altogether.

Words: 5.8k
Rating: Teen
Also available on AO3 & Wattpad (link in Masterlist)
Tumblr media
Charlie was back in Edenbrook.
Not by her own desire, of course.
It was her therapist’s idea. She thought visiting Edenbrook would help Charlie so she could see it without the looming threat of a bioterrorist attack or meeting Ethan’s estranged mother. Her therapist hoped that it would ease Charlie’s anxiety and show her that Edenbrook really was just a building at the end of the day.
Not some evil place full of death and destruction. Even if it housed her most painful memories, those were just memories. She couldn’t fault the building itself.
She needed to stop fearing Edenbrook. If she didn’t, she could never return to Edenbrook.
Those were easy things to say – very appealing in its rationality.
But if it was just a building, it was a building haunted. The halls were lined with ghosts of memories long gone, seemingly forgotten by all but Charlie. All the hope and innocence she saw on her first day was replaced with stinging bitterness. She was afraid of what Edenbrook would take from her next.
She didn’t want to be here.
She probably would have left if she hadn’t made lunch plans with Kyra – who, of course, was late.
It had already been fifteen minutes since they’d initially planned to meet, and Charlie saw no sign of Kyra showing up any time soon. Charlie initially waited in the lobby, but after a text from Kyra that said she was stuck in an emergency staff meeting, Charlie moved to Kyra’s office to wait in privacy.
It was easier to wait there. Charlie had very few memories in the administrative wing of the hospital – even fewer negative ones. There were also fewer onlookers in Kyra’s office, and Charlie didn’t want to be stared at. Besides, Kyra kept snacks in her desk, and Charlie was starving.
This wasn’t the first time Charlie had stolen from Kyra’s snack drawer, so when she walked in, she knew exactly where it was.  A few months ago, lunches like these were regular occurrences. Then secrets – primarily Charlie’s relationship with Ethan – started to separate her from her friends, little by little. Most of her spare time was taken from her friends and immediately dedicated to the intoxicating and less than honorable pursuit of falling in love with Ethan Ramsey.
Charlie had been lying for a very long time.
Two months of her relationship – almost three. Even longer if she counted the build-up.
Her friends allowed it. She wasn’t sure why, but as she stole a Twizzler from Kyra’s desk, she had the distinct feeling that she didn’t deserve it.
Just before Charlie could lose herself in the depths of guilt and a dizzying inner monologue, her companion finally appeared.
20 minutes late, not that Charlie or her grumbling stomach were counting.
“Twizzlers, thank God,” Kyra skipped the pleasantries, instead making a beeline for her friend and the snacks in her hands. Kyra took a handful from the snack drawer and waited until she’d chewed through at least one before turning to Charlie.
Kyra looked amazing.
Particularly for being on death’s door only a month earlier.
Charlie wished she had been there for more of the recovery. After finding out Kyra survived the surgery, they had an emotional moment, and they frequented each other’s room in the hospital. But after the memorial service, Charlie and Ethan left town, and Charlie struggled once she returned to Boston.
During that time, Charlie visited Raf and Kyra. Sometimes, seeing them was the only time she left her apartment. But Kyra was the strongest of all of them – to no one’s particular surprise. Kyra returned to work within only a few weeks, and with Raf and Kyra still on leave, they primarily heard from her via text or rambling phone calls where Kyra shared hospital gossip they didn’t understand.
Looking at Kyra and Charlie, you could tell that one of them almost died, but you’d think it was Charlie, not Kyra. Kyra was stylish and trendy with high heels, a freshly shaved head, and a new series of gold ear piercings to celebrate her successful surgery. She oozed effortless coolness and accentuated it with a devilish smile everyone adored.
Charlie, on the other hand, hadn’t bounced back so smoothly. She’d dressed for the snow by picking up a pair of jeans she hadn’t washed in over a week, and coupled with her anxious expression, her style that usually read as classic and laidback seemed boring and stiff.
Or at least that was what Charlie felt like in comparison.
“Everything okay?” Charlie asked, claiming another Twizzler for herself as she settled comfortably on the edge of Kyra’s desk.
“Just the hospital freaking out,” Kyra grumbled, digging through her snack drawer for something else. She didn’t seem satisfied with any of her options, so she settled on a pack of fruit gummies from the bottom of the drawer.
“About what?” Charlie’s interest was piqued, though she tried to keep her tone casual. After staying home for so long, she couldn’t help but be intrigued.
“Another crisis,” Kyra evaded her, “Which isn’t helping the dire financial straits the hospital was already in.”
“Oh… Are you sure you can still get lunch today?”
“Are you kidding!” Kyra’s eyes widened as if horrified by the idea of a cancellation, “After all that, I need lunch. Let’s get out of the hospital and actually go somewhere good.”
Kyra wanted to get Charlie out of the hospital. Something about her eagerness to do made Charlie suspicious but not enough so that she would push it further. She was so eager to leave – despite her therapist’s suggestions – that she quickly accepted the proposal.
“Sounds perfect,” Charlie agreed.
After only a few moments of discussion, they decided to go to a restaurant within walking distance. Despite its close proximity, it was unpopular with Edenbrook workers because it was notorious for slow service, a recipe for disaster for short lunch breaks. Charlie, who had nowhere else to be for the rest of the day, didn’t mind. Kyra, who regularly extended her break beyond its limit, suggested it on purpose so she could avoid their coworkers.
As they walked to the restaurant, Kyra silently lamented she’d brought Charlie to Edenbrook on the worst day possible.
But she smiled and kept it to herself.
When they took their seats, Kyra started her usual game of looking for the craziest thing on the menu and deciding she should get it just so she could live a little. She inspired Charlie to order something a little more adventurous than the basic chicken sandwich she’d been eyeing when they first walked in.
After they ordered, Kyra was smiling.
“What?” Charlie asked, “The chicken won’t be that spicy,” she felt the need to defend her order, assuming her friend was judging her hot chicken and waffles – an impulsive choice on Charlie’s part but familiar enough that she was comfortable with it.
“Not that,” Kyra rolled her eyes dramatically, still grinning though, “I missed you.”
“I missed you, too,” Charlie smiled back – genuinely.
“I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever,” Kyra shook her head as if shocked by their recent time apart.
“I know… I haven’t been around much,” Charlie admitted sheepishly, reaching for her water as if she could hide behind the glass.
She didn’t need to feel embarrassed about needing time after the attack to heal. But that wasn’t really what she was embarrassed about. It was the weeks of lying and hiding that preceded it.
“I’ve heard,” Kyra smirked softly into her drink.
“You’ve heard?” Charlie repeated, her heart rate spiking just a bit.
“I mean, even before everything happened, you were getting hard to find. And then, after the attack, you’re entitled to space, but…” Kyra smirked like she knew some grand secret, and Charlie’s stomach flipped. “Honestly, all of your roommates wonder where you are but are too polite to ask because of all you’ve been through.”
Charlie’s face fell.
Shit.
She should’ve known. Of course, they’d eventually put it together that she was often gone and frequently spent nights away, but she didn’t realize they were talking about it.
Charlie swallowed hard, and Kyra took that as her sign to continue.
“At first, they thought you were seeing someone casually and didn’t want to tell anyone after what happened with Raf, but then they thought they would have come around after the attack. For a little while, they thought you were with Raf and had secretly united after he broke up with his girlfriend because you guys were suddenly getting along again,” Kyra explained, watching as Charlie’s blanched with shock, “And he explained your absences a lot of the time, but he denied being your boyfriend, by the way. So, if you are having a secret love affair, you should know that your boyfriend denies it.”
“And do you guys still think I’m with Raf?” Charlie couldn’t believe there had been this much discourse about her absence. How many theories had they gone through?
“No,” Kyra shook her head, “You guys don’t act like a couple when you’re together. Plus, there’s no real reason to keep it a secret.”
Right…
Charlie was amazed Rafael hadn’t told her about all the gossip, but he was probably just trying to protect her from it.
“You guys aren’t, are you?” Kyra asked, just to be sure.
“No, definitely not,” Charlie insisted forcefully enough that Kyra was satisfied she was telling the truth.
“Good,” Kyra grinned in relief, “I already made a bet with Elijah that you two weren’t together, so he owes he me $20 now.”
Charlie couldn’t help but laugh.
Still, her curiosity burned.
“So, what are the other theories?”
Kyra raised an eyebrow, surprised Charlie was digging into it more. Clearly, something was there if she was this curious.
“Some are better than others. Aurora thought you might have a secret apartment to be by yourself. Sienna thinks you’re just going around to different supporters like Dr. Banerji when you need them. She usually thinks you’re at his cabin when you’re away. Bryce likes to joke that you’re out at bars on the prowl for a new boy toy,” Kyra winked with a laugh, “And then there’s this really funny one we came up with at Donahue’s, but it’s probably not true.”
“What is it?” Charlie pushed.
Kyra blushed. She was embarrassed to tell her how crazy their conspiracies had become.
“Well… it’s just that Dr. Ramsey’s been really supportive and protective since the attack. And we all saw how devastated he was right after. Plus, he’s the one who took you to Dr. Banerji’s cabin,” Kyra began, but the way she spoke made it clear she thought it was unlikely.
But she was right.
“After everything that happened with you last year, I know that you probably wouldn’t even give him the time of day, especially since you’d started dating other people right before you got sick. But… we thought you and Dr. Ramsey were, you know, together.”
Kyra expected an emphatic rebuttal or an amused laugh. Instead, Charlie stared.
“You weren’t, right?” Kyra laughed, waiting for her expected response.
“Um…” Charlie hesitated.
She wondered if she should keep lying.
But she couldn’t fathom it, not anymore.
“I was, actually,” Charlie said it casually, like it wasn’t an earth-shattering revelation that she had reunited with the man who broke her heart last spring.
Kyra was stunned to silence.
So stunned that she hardly noticed the waitress deliver their meals. Charlie thanked her on behalf of both of them.
Charlie waited for Kyra to do something.
Literally anything.
But she was just staring.
“We were actually together before the attack, though,” Charlie spoke up, trying to fill the silence. She kept her tone nonchalant in hopes it would keep the conversation that way, reducing the impact of her truth, “About a month. Not including the back and forth preceding it, where we slept together a few times.”
Kyra’s eyes widened more and more until they couldn’t possibly get wider.
“I thought you liked David! Didn’t you go out with him to get over Ethan?” Kyra asked, having set up them up just so Charlie could stop crushing on her boss.
“I did like him! But… I only saw him once. And I actually cut that date short because Ethan called me drunk, and I wanted to check on him,” Charlie admitted sheepishly.
“And that’s when you decided to be with Ethan?”
“No,” Charlie averted her eyes, “It was about a week later, I think. We, um… we had sex in Ethan’s office. We didn’t mean to do that, but as you already know, it wasn’t the first time. So, Ethan suggested that we start an actual relationship. I said no initially, but the next day, I said yes.”
“You’re in a relationship?”
“Oh… yeah,” Charlie winced, realizing her friend thought they were just sleeping together.
“How serious?”
“Like we’ve met each other’s parents, and we regularly say, ‘I love you’ serious,” Charlie’s voice got higher as she spoke until she was almost squeaking.
This was crazy. She’d been having a secret relationship – and not the kind where you text someone and show up at their door. She’d been building something meaningful with Ethan. She loved Ethan. She truly wanted to spend the rest of her life with Ethan, and along the way, she’d forgotten that her friends had no idea.
“Holy. Shit,” Kyra’s jaw dropped, and she leaned in close, “Tell me everything.”
She was smiling, and Charlie let out a deep sigh of relief.
So, Charlie told her.
Their promise to have a one-night stand. The way they pulled away and always came back. Her first date with David and the night she spent with Ethan. The morning where they shared breakfast and became friends again. The night in Ethan’s office where he offered a relationship and her teary acceptance the next night. The first time they said I love you. The way he helped put her back together after the attack. Their fight about her returning to Edenbrook. Everything.
Kyra was enthralled.
She asked more questions.
Most of which involved how Ethan was in bed. The others questioned how such an asshole could be a good boyfriend. And most importantly, why they’d kept it a secret.
On that front, Charlie didn’t have a great answer.
It was obvious why they kept it a secret from most of the hospital. The hospital didn’t approve of interdepartmental relationships, particularly if one party was a superior. It could jeopardize her place on the Diagnostics Unit, and rumors of sleeping to the top could damage her career permanently.
But why she didn’t tell her friends?
At first, just to keep the secret from spreading and maybe because she thought they’d think it was a terrible decision. Then… as time went on, it was just harder to share.
Though disappointed with Charlie’s lack of an answer, Kyra loved the conversation.
A few months ago, she’d strongly urged Charlie to stay away from Ethan, convinced he could only hurt her if they got any closer. But now that Ethan had seemingly proved himself, Kyra was eager to hear everything.
The rest of lunch was spent dishing on Charlie’s secret relationship and gossiping about the fabulous men – and the gorgeous woman – Kyra had been casually seeing in the last few weeks. Out of all of them, the only one who came close to acting like a partner was ironically Bryce – the only one she wasn’t sleeping with. Charlie, as always, encouraged Kyra to ask Bryce out and act on their perpetual flirting. Kyra just waved off the suggestion.
It wasn’t until the end of the meal that the conversation naturally drifted back to the financial state of Edenbrook and the resulting long hours Kyra had been working.
Kyra forgot why she didn’t bring it up earlier. She forgot that, as much as she loved Charlie, certain topics were still of limits. Something about the conversation made Kyra feel safe and comfortable – like she was catching up with an old friend, not protecting her from a hospital tragedy.
“I didn’t realize things were that bad,” Charlie confessed, signing her name on the check as they collected their things to leave.
“The whole thing’s on the verge of collapse,” Kyra sighed, “We’re trying everything –even begging our donor list to the point where they hate us. And things are going to get so much worse after today…”
“Today? What happened today?” Charlie asked curiously. Kyra, who had just looped her arm through Charlie’s, stilled as she realized her mistake.
“Just a little crisis. Nothing we can’t handle,” Kyra murmured casually.
“Is that why you had the emergency meeting?” Charlie prodded innocently, unaware of the change in her friend.
“Mmmhmm,” Kyra hummed avoidantly.
“Well… What was it?” Charlie asked again, growing more intrigued by the minute, “There hasn’t been an emergency admin meeting since someone tried to kill me. And before that, the last one was when Mrs. Martinez’s family threatened to sue. It’s got to be something big.”
And it was.
Something monumental and horrible.
“It’s not great,” Kyra warned, “You probably don’t want to hear about it…”
Well, now Charlie had to know.
“Kyra,” she said softly, pausing on the sidewalk once they exited the restaurant, “what is it?”
Kyra chewed on her lower lip, mulling over the decision on whether or not to tell her.
If Kyra was the one to tell her, at least she could control the way the information was spread. Charlie wouldn’t first be exposed to the news through sensationalized gossip or accusatory questions.
Maybe it was better this way.
“An intern made a mistake, or we think it was a mistake,” Kyra began, her hand resting on Charlie’s arms as they moved through the bitterly cold city. Even with their heavy jackets, they huddled together for warmth, and Kyra was comforted by Charlie’s closeness.
“A mistake,” Charlie repeated, the cogs in her brain already churning.
The last time the administrative wing panicked because of an intern mistake, it had been her own.
“What unit?” Charlie asked, hoping it would be something completely unrelated to her line of work. Maybe surgery made the wrong cut or psych misdiagnosed. Even dermatology was capable of mistakes if they tried hard enough.
“Diagnostics,” Kyra’s soft voice was almost lost to the roar of the Boston streets.
Charlie knew.
Without being told, she knew exactly what happened.
And the fact it came so easily to her meant that she had known the risk before now.
She let it happen.
“Esme,” Charlie blurted out her assumption. She prayed that Kyra would correct her.
“How did you know?” Kyra asked, bewildered.
Charlie winced.
“And the patient was Levi Coates.”
“Did someone already tell you?” Kyra’s eyes were so wide they took up most of her face. She was astonished – maybe even a little relieved she wouldn’t have to share the gory details if Charlie already knew.
Charlie couldn’t speak.
Without either noticing, the crosswalk turned green.
Most of the lunch rush had already left the city streets and returned to their office building, so the sidewalks weren’t crowded. Only a few people stood next to Charlie and Kyra, and once the light changed, they left the pair on the sidewalk by themselves.
“No…” Charlie murmured finally, only becoming aware of the crosswalk once it turned red again and stranded them in their original location.
No one needed to tell Charlie.
It all came back to her in horrific detail.
The day she came back to work – her last day before she abandoned Edenbrook and the care of her intern.
Esme acted strangely. She said things she shouldn’t have said to Charlie. She asked dangerous questions. She was too close to Levi – and too willing to take on the risks involved with helping him. And the party…. The party should have been a sign. No one survived a party at Edenbrook, it seemed.
But back then, Charlie couldn’t take it on. She was too fragile and overwhelmed to assume the responsibilities, stress, and mistakes of another. She couldn’t care for herself enough to teach someone else.
She’d left Esme.
She assumed someone would take over, spot it, and do something.
Or her little warning speech would be enough to warn Esme off from career-ruining misery.
But now, Charlie saw it wasn’t enough.
She failed Esme. She failed Edenbrook, and now she failed Levi.
Charlie didn’t want to ask what Esme had done, but she hoped it was benign – something like threatening a parent and having a lawsuit thrown in her face. She couldn’t watch another bright young intern lose a patient and devastate a family.
“What happened?” Charlie asked, not to sate curiosity but to be prepared. She knew that everyone would stare and whisper once she walked into Edenbrook again.
She didn’t look at Kyra as the light finally turned green again. While Kyra collected her thoughts, Charlie tugged her friend across the crosswalk.
Kyra sighed. There was no right way to say it, but even still, it felt wrong to say, “Levi died.”
Charlie’s world felt like it ended again.
“What?”
Charlie stopped in the middle of the street. Locked into her arms, Kyra was stuck there with her.
“She overdosed him. After everything his body went through, he couldn’t take it,” Kyra explained, looking at the crosswalk sign as she was eager to get out of the road.
“So, it was an accident?” Charlie meant to clarify, but it sounded more like a demand.
“Well…” Kyra swallowed, “We’re not sure.”
“You’re not sure?”
“She was close to the patient, and judging by the interviews we’ve conducted thus far… it’s possible that she did this to spare him, most likely with his permission. And that’s the result the admin office wants.”
“Why would they want that? That’s illegal in Massachusetts,” Charlie demanded, seemingly oblivious to the countdown on how much longer they had in this street.
“Charlie, let’s get out of the road,” Kyra implored.
“Just tell me.”
Kyra huffed, eyes scanning the cars waiting for the green light to run them over. Backed into a corner, she confessed, “Because, if she did, the hospital isn’t liable, and we can’t afford the lawsuit right now.”
Oh my God.
Finally, Charlie took a step, and Kyra immediately ushered them to the other side of the street. Only moments later, cars roared through the intersection, much to Kyra’s relief.
But Charlie was disgusted.
She was horrified. She hated that a death had turned into money so quickly. She hated that she hadn’t saved Esme and Levi. She hated that her experience with Mrs. Martinez had been repeated in another generation.
For the next block or so, Kyra and Charlie walked in silence.
Then Edenbrook came into view.
That place.
Full of death and destruction. Pain and misery. Mistakes and heartache.
An anxious building was suddenly clothed in danger.
She hated it. She hated the whole place and all it had done to those she cared about.
Kyra watched her carefully, hoping that she wouldn’t have to leave her friend in a bad state. Finally, she asked, “Should I not have told you?”
“No, you should have,” Charlie murmured, “Better you than someone like Declan Nash telling me it’s a tradition.”
Kyra squeezed Charlie’s arm, wishing she could absorb whatever terrible emotions she felt. She’d been through enough already.
“Do you think it was an accident?” Charlie bit her lip, unsure if she wanted the answer, “If only you got to decide, what would you do?”
“Me?” Kyra considered it, “I don’t know. I’ve only read a few interviews, and I hardly know her. But… looking at his file, I wouldn’t blame Esme if she did. With parents who wouldn’t allow him to give up, he didn’t have many other options, but… I don’t want her to get blamed for this for the sake of a hospital budget.”
Charlie appreciated Kyra’s fair consideration, but personally… Charlie felt sure of what Esme had done. And she couldn’t blame her, not when she saw Levi’s suffering. But it felt like a failure on Charlie’s part nonetheless. She should have been there to find other alternatives before it came to this.
They were close to Edenbrook now.
Soon, they’d say goodbye.
“Are you going to be okay?” Kyra inquired. She wouldn’t leave her friend like this, but she didn’t know what else to do. She couldn’t bring her back to the chaos in the administrative wing, and aside from Rafael, all of their other friends were currently working in Edenbrook, the source of the tragedy.
“I’ll be fine,” Charlie affirmed half-heartedly.
“Do you have any plans for the rest of the day?” Kyra asked casually. Or it was supposed to sound casual – because, in actuality, it definitely wasn’t. Kyra wanted to know that Charlie wasn’t going to mope about all day or go on a downward spiral after the news.
“Not particularly,” Charlie shrugged, “While I’m here, I think I’ll run up and see Ethan.”
“Your boyfriend?” Kyra teased, and Charlie shot her a glare. Kyra nudged her playfully, “You should tell everyone, you know.”
“I will… eventually.”
“Eventually? So, they’ll find out by getting a wedding invite?”
“I’ll tell them when it’s time,” Charlie insisted, a ghost of a smile creeping across her lips at the joke.
“Just make sure I’m there when you tell Bryce. I want to see his reaction. Promise me, okay?” Kyra demanded once they got to the front door.
“Okay,” Charlie agreed weakly, feeling the color drain from her face as she stepped inside.
“Alright…” Kyra sighed, hesitating to leave. She balanced on either foot as she tried to think of a reason to stay, but ultimately, she just gave Charlie a hug, “Call me later, okay?”
Charlie nodded her agreement.
Kyra wasn’t totally satisfied, but she walked back to the admin office anyway.
Leaving Charlie in Edenbrook.
This building. This horrible building.
Charlie started walking to Ethan’s office on autopilot, but the halls plagued her. Ghosts of patients lost, mistakes made, and heartaches received whispered to her. And then they screamed.
The panic built in her chest – mixing with her sense of regret and responsibility.
Everything here had been a devastating failure.
In her blind rage, she knew exactly what she needed to do.
Ethan felt something similar as he walked to his office.
He’d spent his lunch break with Naveen. Their scheduled lunch had been disrupted by a crisis with Dr. Ortega, and their resulting time together amounted to picking up food from the cafeteria and eating it in Naveen’s office between emergency meetings.
This lunch turned into what Ethan usually called Naveen’s “retirement talks.” Every year or so, Naveen would tire of the politics and stress associated with their profession. He would meet Ethan for drinks or dinner, and he would propose a retirement. Throughout the meal, Naveen would build a fantasy of retirement – one where he read, fished, and hosted dinner parties with frequency. Ethan played the role of reminding Naveen why he loved his job. At the end of all of these talks, Ethan’s side always won because, truthfully, Naveen was never looking to retire. After all, even when Naveen almost died, he couldn’t stay retired for even a week after his recovery.
But today was different.
Today, during the hurried meal, Naveen hadn’t built a fantasy. He reflected on the reality of their job and the pain it can produce. The death of Levi Coates and the accusations against Dr. Esme Ortega were proof enough that this was a difficult burden to bear. Naveen felt responsible. So did Ethan.
It was Ethan’s department, and she worked under Ethan – not that Ethan could say he’d given much effort to her education recently. He’d been so entangled in his own life that he hadn’t been much of an attending. Perhaps he could have taught her something to prevent this.
Then there was the day Charlie came back to work… He’d seen Ortega. She’d been up to something. If Ethan hadn’t been so focused on Charlie, he would have seen it. He could have done something.
Though he felt similarly, he lacked Charlie’s rage and depth of pain.
So, when he opened his office door and saw his beloved girlfriend standing there, he smiled. Because it felt like old times, if just for a minute. When they were so eager for time together that they’d meet here in secret…. His heart ached for the innocence of that time.
Then, he remembered she was still nervous in Edenbrook, and she was pacing the room anxiously. This couldn’t be a romantic visit.
Ethan closed the door behind him quickly and greeted her with confusion, “Charlotte?”
“You know about Esme,” Charlie skipped pleasantries.
In the comfort and safety of this office, the apprehension poured out of her. In front of him, she was going to lose it.
Ethan frowned.
He wished she hadn’t found out yet. It was the last thing she needed.
“So, you know too then?” Ethan clarified, turning the lock on his office door out of precaution.
Charlie didn’t answer. She just held her breath, sucking in air through her nose and holding it in her chest. She thought it would calm her. It didn’t.
“This is my fault,” she decided.
“You weren’t even here!” Ethan objected.
“But she’s my intern.”
“You were mine,” Ethan stepped towards Charlie, “And I never took responsibility for Mrs. Martinez’s treatment.”
“But you were there to teach me. You did what you could. I wasn’t there for Esme. I wasn’t even here at all!” Charlie retorted.
“What do you think you could have done?” Ethan asked, knowing she was expecting too much of herself.
“I knew something was wrong, Ethan. Esme was acting inappropriately. She asked me questions about ‘doing the right thing’ even when it’s not allowed. I should have told someone or at least told her more about what happened to me. All I did was give her a short speech and then leave,” Charlie huffed, “I failed her.”
Ethan felt strongly that she hadn’t. Or even if she had, she was justified given her traumatic near-death experience only a few weeks ago.
“You didn’t administer the dose. You’re not responsible.”
Charlie paused, her green eyes boring into his. He felt exposed as she seemed to read his rawest emotions with ease. And to prove it, she inquired, “You feel no responsibility then?”
Ethan shifted uncomfortably. He didn’t want to lie.
Charlie shook her head as if unsurprised, and she began to pace again.
The panic was rising, and tears prickled at her eyes.
“This fucking place,” Charlie scorned, “All I wanted to be was a doctor. I thought I would come here and learn from the best. I thought I’d leave tired and deeply in debt but satisfied with my decision. And at every turn, something horrible happens. Why am I even here? I came here to help people, but who has been helped? Levi? Mrs. Martinez? Bobby?”
“Charlie…” Ethan eyes softened, “You’ve helped a lot of people.”
“Not enough. Not enough for this…” Charlie felt like she was breaking.
She was cracking and splintering. She was giving up.
“Why am I even trying to be a doctor if I’m just getting people killed?”
“Charlotte,” Ethan didn’t expect to react so viscerally, but something about her accusation stung him deeply. He placed either hand on her shoulder and insisted, “You haven’t killed anyone.”
“I can’t do this,” she shook her head so quickly, so fervently that her snow-dampened curls flew, “I can’t come back here. I can’t come back to Edenbrook, where nothing goes right and everyone gets hurt. Ethan… I’m leaving medicine.”
He could have sworn the earth stopped turning.
“Charlotte,” Ethan began, prepared to give a speech on why she was wrong, but she cut him off.
“I’ve already made up my mind. I made it up before I even got here. I can’t take another tragedy in this hospital. I can’t keep going, Ethan. I’m literally building up my tolerance just to stand in this office! How am I supposed to practice again?”
“You haven’t given yourself enough time!” Ethan asserted.
“It’s been over a month. How much more time will it take, Ethan?”
“Naveen is willing to give you as much time as you need.”
“But when is enough time? Ethan, there isn’t enough time! I am broken. I lost the instinct. I can’t do it anymore,” she felt like she was begging him to understand, just as he was begging her to change her mind.
“You are not broken, no matter what. You haven’t even tested the instinct to know if it’s lost,” Ethan knew that pinpointing the holes in her argument would do little to sway her, but it felt like all he had.
“I can’t keep going like this, Ethan,” Charlie said so passionately that Ethan instantly knew she was right. His hand went to hers, and he squeezed it.
“I know…” he murmured.
For a second, she thought she’d won. But the racing panic and horror didn’t leave her mind…
“But you don’t have to quit to change this,” Ethan decided.
Charlie frowned, but having decided on his mission, Ethan ignored her. He went to his desk and collected the chart for the newest patient of the Diagnostics Team – a patient they hadn’t even seen yet.
He handed the file to her and told her, “Read it.”
“I’m not even on duty. I can’t read this,” Charlie dropped the chart back to his desk.
“You can, and you are. And read it quickly because you’re going with us to meet the patient.”
“I’m on leave.”
“I’m your supervisor, and if you’re going to quit, I’m taking you off leave first,” Ethan determined.
It was a risk.
He could either change her mind or make it much, much worse.
“You should grab your jacket. The patient is at a ski resort, and we’re leaving in half an hour,” Ethan announced authoritatively.
She could say no, of course. She was very good at calling him out on his bullshit, particularly when he claimed authority he didn’t have. But he didn’t think she would because she wanted to know just as much as he did.
“So, what? You don’t want to leave me alone when I’m upset, and you think you can entice me back into work with a mystery? Is that what you have planned?” Charlie accused Ethan.
“No,” Ethan stood firmly, “I’m bringing you because I know you’ll solve it, and you need a reminder of all the good you’ve done here.”
Charlie made a show of rolling her eyes. She hated that he dared to fight her on her own career decisions, particularly after everything she’d been through. But she still reached for the chart. Just as he suspected, she didn’t continue the fight. Instead, she gathered her coat and started reading about the patient.
She wanted to know if Ethan was right.
And honestly… part of her hoped he was.

Author’s Note: Thank you so much for continuing to support this series! I didn’t mean to take this last hiatus, but with finishing up my semester, graduating, saying goodbye to friends, and moving, I ended up needing more time than I originally imagined.
Please share your thoughts on this chapter - and Kyra finding out!

Hi!
Could I please ask for IkeRev HCs for Ray, Fenrir and Luka. What are they like as Older brothers to a younger sister who’s still a teenager, 16/17 ish?
Thank you!
Ray Blackwell, Fenrir Godspeed, Luka Clemence || Ikemen Revolution
Warning(s): Slight spoilers for Fenrir's & Luka’s route (nothing major tho), maybe some OOCness since I haven't picked up IkeRev in some time - but other than that none (do tell me if I’m wrong though ^^)
Note: Hello! I’m really sorry for taking such a long time to write this (honestly I wrote and re-wrote this a handful of times and I still don't even know if they're that great...)
Still, I hope they’re good enough and that you enjoy them - thank you for requesting!
She/Her pronouns are used to address the reader/younger sister
---------------------------
Older Brother to Younger, Teen Sister HCs
Ray Blackwell
Ray’s such a calm older brother in the sense that he’s both never intruding in on your personal space & gives you your freedom while still being able to know when he has to step up and protect you (even though he wants to protect you all the time)
Growing up the both of you were close (Fenrir was thrown in that mix too with how often the two boys hung out) But after Ray joined the army, steadily climbing the ranks and you stuck focusing on your studies you guys kind of drifted apart for sometime
You aren’t sure who started it but soon you found yourselves sending each other letters as a way to stay in touch (your letter more often than not having a picture of Belle tucked inside)
The little kitty loves you by the way - you’re his second favourite hooman (it’s cause you spoil him with cuddles), Ray’ll sometimes get jealous when the feline snuggles up to you because he thinks that his own cat loves you more than him
One day though you were walking home from school and passed an alleyway, faintly hearing someone baby talk to something. Curiosity got the better of you and that’s how you found your older brother, cross legged on the dirty street coddling one too many street cats
Though you do travel to that particular spot a lot now (usually as a way to procrastinate destress from school (or simply because you love cats like Ray does)) You’ll also keep them company when Ray can’t
Ray hates it when you go out late at night since anything could happen to you. It nags at the back of his mind a lot, that one day something might happen to his precious little sister and that he might not be there to save you. Old wounds and feelings resurface at the list of possibilities that come to mind.
He doesn’t want history to repeat itself, he doesn’t want to be unable to protect you from danger. So anytime that you visit headquarters and you stay late you either simply stay the night or have an escort take you home. You can choose which option you’d like but Ray’s not taking a ‘no’ as any form of an answer
Calls you dufus just because he can (but affectionately). Might also ruffle your hair and/or pat you on the shoulder
You call him an old man because he can’t stay up past 10PM (Ray’ll then make some kind of comment regarding Sirius and how he’s more of an old man, to which you both laugh until the man himself makes his presence behind you known)
Absolutely the kind of brother to move things you need off a shelf out of your reach before proceeding to walk away with a satisfied smile on his face
Also the kind of brother to tease you about any cute boys/girls/people that he catches you staring at or gushing about (but he’ll stop if you tell him seriously to stop)
Do you like books? Ray likes books. He has a lot of books. Take a book, please he has too many--
If you enjoy reading, Ray is constantly recommending you novels, letting you read them before casually asking you your opinion on certain characters or events when you’re returning it. But even if you're not an avid reader he may still hand you a book or two that he knows you'll enjoy
Like mentioned earlier, Ray is very busy with Army work and such but honestly, out of everyone in the Black Army, he’s the second best person to come to with homework (second only to Sirius). Especially with history. Like, you need the entire history of the Black Army or Cradle? He’s got you, he had to read up on it when he was on the road to becoming the King of Spades.
Really, you could just pop right into his office at anytime, ask your question and Ray will be able to answer without missing a beat before going back to whatever he was doing
You can always come to Ray for anything. Questions, complaints you name it he’ll listen to your woes/answer however he can.
You guys bond over your teacher(s) giving too much homework; Ray reminiscing when he was your age and in high school - he completely understands the struggle (it was excruciating. All the work prolonged the sweet embrace of a good night’s sleep T~T)
There’s someone who’s picking on you? Don’t worry he’ll deal with them >:)
He might not always know how he can help or comfort you since he’s not the best with words when it comes to certain things, but that won’t stop him from at least helping where he can
Will never let anything happen to you -- Ray protects you with his life and he'll use any power he has if it means that you can walk out unharmed, that’s how much he cares for you
Fenrir Godspeed
Fenrir doubles as both your older brother and your best friend
110% flaunts how you’re the coolest little sister a brother could have to anyone that will listen (most of the time it’s the Black Army tho)
Flips between calling you by name, ‘sis’ and any other ridiculous nickname he can come up with (but don’t worry - you have an equally stupid name for him)
Considers you his best buddy (aside from Ray that is)
Fenrir’s also the kind of brother to pat his sister’s head, ruffle her hair, give gentle noogies and shake her around by the shoulders/poke her playfully then go ‘wasn’t me’. Just like these wholesome little things that mean no harm or anything
I also like the idea of Fenrir giving his sister piggyback rides - it's just a nice thought, please don't take this away from me I beg of you T-T
Best bro Fenrir picks you up from school every day, no ifs, ands or buts! Usually, he’ll buy you your favourite sweet/snack and give it to you when he gets there.
Brings Shu Shu along as well and the three of you will talk about what happened at school or anything exciting that may have happened as he walks you either home or to the barracks
You’re both very chaotic + Ray joins in too most of the time. Quite a few pranks happen when you’re at Black HQ (RIP the Black Army when you come over and you three triple team them).
Harmless pranks I promise!
Fenrir may take one of your belongings (a brush, your favourite book or an accessory) and run around the place with the only way of you getting it back is to catch him
There was this one time you snuck tomatoes into his food to see if he’d notice.
Spoiler alert: he most certainly did
After that he kinda ignored you for the rest of the day as payback, pouting and pretending like you weren’t there, saying stuff like ‘huh? Did you hear that?” At the end of the day though he wasn't mad and was able to laugh it off (it doesn’t erase the betrayal he felt tho)
Once in a while you’ll also poke fun at his fear of ghosts, saying off hand that there’s one at the end of the hall, down in the cellar or behind him. You never go too far though - not after the time that a prank of yours left him really shaken. You’ve never seen him so scared in your life and don’t plan to again.
Oliver’s soul nearly left his body when he first met you and learned that you took after your troublesome brother
Fenrir loves helping you with any school work you have cause he likes being a dependable brother for you! …The only problem is that sometimes he doesn’t know how to. Like, he grasps the basic concepts of what you’re talking about, but if you ask him how to calculate acceleration or a parabola he draws a blank - you’ve lost him.
Pls cut him some slack tho he’s trying his best and just the thought alone is sweet 🥺
Compared to his best buddy Ray, the Ace of Spades has quite a bit of free time, which he spends by dropping by the family home where you still live for surprise visits.
Most greetings start with “There’s my favourite sister!” with you adding on “I’m your only sister Fenrir…”
You still welcome him with a smile, open arms and a hug :)
Swears up, down and on his life to keep you and army affairs separate, he’s NOT going to expose his little sister to the violence that comes with his occupation. He stands firm on this decision. This topic is one of the only times you’ll see him actually serious
You’re not stupid though, you know what goes on, and, because of this, every time you hear in passing that the gun crazed Ace of Spades was at it again - launching himself straight into battle - there’s this pang of anxiety that rattles you to your core. You’re sure that there always will be no matter how much times passes
As a sum up - very loving and goofy brother/best friend with the addition of lots of pranks and battle scares 😎✌️
Luka Clemence
You know how in game Luka starts off as kinda cold to MC/Alice? Yeah there's none of that with his little sister
Usually when hanging around her he's most of the time adorning a small smile cause he finds joy in being around her
The relationship you have is a VERY close one considering that, while growing up in the prestigious Clemence household, it was basically you and Luka against the world
Sometimes Luka fears that you’re really lonely back at home because he’s not around as much as he used to be ever since joining the Black Army. Therefore, every week he’s set aside at the bare minimum a whole day (or at least an afternoon/evening) to go visit you - or for you to visit him!
Y’all cooking buddies and I’ll die on this hill
Luka teaches you any and everything he knows about cooking all the way to baking. He’ll even write down recipes for your favourite dishes so you can make them when he’s not there.
Whenever you’re visiting the Black Army and it’s Luka’s turn to make dinner you pitch in and help. He’ll make some of the dishes while you make the others.
The Black Army adores your cooking since you have such a great teacher/brother
Luka lets you hold/pet/feed/take care of Stone. You’re the only exception he makes when it comes to his furry companion
Don’t swear around him he’ll die (that is, after getting told by the other Black Army officers why it's such a bad thing and a big deal)
Lets you hold his sword once but you ended up nearly toppling over because it was heavier than you first anticipated.
Would play the violin for you while you study if you asked him, especially if you bring up that it helps you concentrate better
Sibling fights are non-existent. The only time that there’s a chance of you butting heads is when Luka starts pushing himself too much with training or the conversion involves Jonah
Speaking of the Queen of Hearts--
It’s a constant tug of war between the two brothers on who gets to spend the day with you. Luka’s scowling, Jonah’s pouting and you’re wondering what you have to do to get your brothers to get along (or at least have it where you’re not in the middle of it all)
Very supportive of whatever you want to do with your life. Luka also tells you every once in a while that you can always come live in Black territory or even the barracks when you’re a little older if you want to
All the more should Jonah/your parents ever try to enforce something on you (like some kind of lesson/social norms for Red Territory that you don’t like etc.). Luka will 100% whisk you away into Black Territory to get away from it all, just say the word.
All in all each of the boys are wrapped around their little sister's finger and would do anything to keep her safe and happy :)

Thank you again for requesting!

I remembered an interesting theory about Saeran, but I forgot where originally I read it because it was long time ago.
In Secret Ending, Saeran said something like,
"..the woman who joined RFA after I tricked her, I never imagine he'd end up with her"
"He" here is reffering to his brother, I think.
The theory said that when Saeran becomes Ray after he drugged by Rika, he saw MC from a far and wanted to bring her to Magenta. But he always failed, until years later, he becomes Unknown and use the rougher way. He hacks to MC phone to bring her to the apartment. Unknown shows his interest to MC like he keeps saying 'Admit it you like me' or making MC as his assistant if she refuses to enter the apartment... because he doesn't want to lose MC again.
And when Unknown is gone and recovering, Saeran said 'I never imagine he'd end up with her', like it wasn't all of his plan that MC will fall into Saeyoung. Like originally he really wants to end up with MC. So Another Story was an alternate version when Ray is succesfully brings MC into Mint Eye.
But what confused me from this theory is, in Another Story, when Ray failed to bring MC as the tester, there's only 2 options; Mint Eye was caught by the police or MC becomes Ray's assistant. So yeah this theory is interesting but I don't think so because Ray will not let go of MC, even she refuses to be the tester, except she reports it to the police.
Yeah, I don't really think that this is a plausible theory. I think somebody could definitely make something interesting to read out of this, but to me, I just can't see it being substantiated with canon. Because, you're right, Ray will not let go of the MC. He will refuse to do that, that is quite literally why you get three options. Agree to go with him, call the police and damn him to death, or refuse and become his assistant.
I think if I were going to try to help you make a place where this could maybe be possible is if you try to tie it in together with BRE2. You are forcibly removed from your room in that ending and taken to the basements. It is implied that you were tortured more or less. The Elixir pretty much made it so you can't really do anything, or speak much. You're dazed, tired, and confused.
The person you talk to is neither Saeran nor Ray, as the solidified fusion of GE Saeran is not yet manifested here. So stay with me here for a small second. He is able to say that he never wanted for you to get hurt, and also says that he's sorry that he couldn't make you happy properly. He tells you that he hopes that you'll be happier on the outside, and then he simply gives you some sleeping pills to take.
You take them and you wake up in an apartment that isn't familiar at all. It's Rika's apartment, so it means that he basically gave you to the RFA. So, I suppose if you wanted to make something out of this, you could say that since he decided to stay at Mint Eye and face whatever punishment came for him because he felt like he deserved it for what he did. If he is subjected to more torture and more frustration, who is to say that this may not or wouldn't cause Unknown to manifest here.
If Rika can somehow find a way to cover their tracks and move to another base, I could see her definitely being more harsh to him and it would cause him to detach and would inevitably lead to Unknown or an Unknown type person. It still isn't the same as you being the MC that goes to test the game, or the MC that goes to the apartment, but if you wind up having Amnesia or something of that nature, it could cause for a situation like this. Especially if it was a side effect of the Elixir itself. Because that's the only way I could see you forgetting about him.
It would definitely be a round of major Canon Divergence? But, I think someone could definitely play around with this if they wanted and get something out of it. It wouldn't be a happy ending. It would be him being happy that you're finally happy, even if that's not with him. It will hurt him forever, however. But as long as you're happy, that's all he ever wanted.

I know you have this theory that vaultJacob is not real and was placed in the vault, and many other theories are connected to that, e.g. R not wanting MC to go after the vaults before Y5 because they had realJacob. But let's just assume for a sec that vaultJacob is the real Jacob and was really trapped all this time. How would that change your theories?
You know, it’s actually a very hard question, and I’m afraid I can’t really answer it. I just feel like all my theories are so connected at this point that once one link is removed, they all kind of fall apart. And vault!Jacob is a super important element of that, if not the most important.
I mean, even if we look at the example you mentioned… If Jacob was always trapped in the portrait, why R didn’t want MC to search for the Cursed Vaults in Y4? They wanted to get to the final Vault. And if we assume that they had to go through the previous Vaults as well, they knew that they’re gonna need a Legilimens to open the Legilimency door. Because they used Jacob for that previously, right? Hell, they told MC at the beginning of Y5 that they need them. So, how to explain that? Personally, I just don’t see an explanation.
I don’t know, perhaps I could come up with something eventually, but it basically means that I’d have to create my theories from scratch. And honestly, I don’t really feel like doing it. I’ve spent years adding it all, trying to fill various plot holes – and I’d say I did a pretty good job at it. Of course, there were always some tweaks to be made here and there, and I was always aware that some more tweaks would have to appear. But as I said, vault!Jacob is too important to treat it as a tweak.
Now, I don’t want to sound dramatic or anything, but… To be frank, if I believed that vault!Jacob is the real Jacob and I’d see no other options to explain it… I think that I wouldn’t create new theories, as simple as that. So yeah, that’s how my theories would be changed: they wouldn’t exist. I’d probably quit the game after Y5Ch30. In fact, there was a moment when I was seriously considering it. But then, I started talking with my friend about different possibilities, and this is pretty much when the idea of the imposter was created. It gave me hope that this story can still make sense. Because otherwise? I wouldn’t see the point in continuing. The characters might be alright and whatnot, but it’s just really not enough for me.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that I can’t enjoy the story unless it’s absolutely excellent. I don’t mind some guilty pleasures every now and then. But I do have my limits, and the story Rakepick presented in the Portrait Vault is simply too fucking stupid.
