A/n: WELL HERE WE ARE, BEGINNING OF A CRAZY RIDE. This prologue is short, and you don’t HAVE to read it before you start the series, but it gives some good background going into the story you might not want to miss! Also it’s written pretty poorly, expect better going forward.
If you want to be added to the tag list for this let me know!! (no idea how to make one but I’ll figure it out).
No content warnings for this part (:

You could never imagine the immeasurable impact Jacob Thomas Kiszka would have on your life, but you knew from the moment you met him, even at a spry five years old, that he’d be special to you.
As clear as watching it on film, you could recall the day he first walked into your life, his big, beautiful brown eyes immediately rapturing you.

August 17th 1956
Townsend, Tennessee
He stumbled up your long dust driveway with his twin brother, his parents leading the way, each holding a younger child of their own. You glued yourself to your father, your arms wrapped around his waist from the back as you watched the large family climb your porch.
“It’s so nice to finally meet y’all. Welcome to Townsend,” your mother was the first to speak in her heavy southern drawl, extending her hand to his mother. She introduced herself and your father, the men sharing their own firm handshake, before switching and shaking the ladies hands respectively.
Your mom gave you a gentle nudge, “And this here is y/n. She’s a little shy.”
“Well I’m Karen, and this is Kelly,” she reached down and rubbed over Jake’s head, “these are our twins, Josh and Jake, they’re five. Over there with Kelly is our little Ronnie, she’ll be three in just a few days,” she turned and cooed at the baby she was holding, causing him to babble, “and this is our Sammy Boy.”
Josh and Jake waved at your parents, then at you.
“Hi,” the boys spoke in unison.
“Hi,” your voice was soft. It was true, you were shy, but the real reason for your uneasiness was the crush that you were too quickly developing on Jake. At the time, the boys looked like carbon copies of each other, but there was something about Jake that stood out to you. While his twin was quite bouncy, Jake was seemingly very calm, even at five, his aura had you ever curious, wanting to learn him more than anything.
As your parents continued to chat, the boys wandered off, Josh jumping down off the porch, talking his twin’s ear off animatedly as Jake sat and listened, drawing aimlessly in the dust at his feet, a perfect representation of their dynamic that you’d become familiar with over the years.
A little more comfortable, you stepped from behind your dad to get a better view of the two as they carried on, but you found your eyes constantly tracking Jake.
He turned back to look at you, sending you a small grin that awakened the butterflies in your stomach.
Yes, Jacob Kiszka would be very special.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
By the time you were ten, there was no mistaking that you had a huge crush on Jake. And you were no expert on the subject, but you were pretty sure he felt the same. All the fleeting glances in class, the way he insisted that he and Josh walk you all the way to your porch from the bus stop before they made the half mile walk back to their home. The way you spent practically every day during the summer together, late into the night when Josh begged him to go home, but he was never quite ready to leave.
Though your shyness never waned with age, you felt the most comfortable when you were around the twins. They both had their own unique ways of breaking you out of your shell, but it was always Jake that you leaned towards.
And as if you weren’t infatuated enough, the first time Jake played his guitar for you, telling you his dream of playing on big stages around the world, you were swoon. He was so passionate about the subject that you couldn’t help but be just as excited about the idea as he was.
From then on, every chance you got, you were begging him to play for you, and he never said no.
And more times than you could count, Jake would drag you to the old garage behind their house, making you watch for hours on end as he, Josh, Sam (who was finally old enough to join in on the antics), and his friend Danny performed for you. It became one of your favorite ways to spend time with them.
Through middle school, you and the boys continued to be close, and your feelings for Jake continued to develop, but when highschool came around, everything changed.
Growing apart by the day, all the fleeting glances in class turned to simple waves and tight lipped smiles in the hallway.
The Kiszkas were very popular at your small high school, all of them picking up new friends and flings along the way, leaving little room for you in their lives.
When Jake turned 16 and got a truck, he offered to give you a lift to and from school, but with the responsibility of taking all his siblings to school, you realized it’d be more of a hassle than it was worth, politely declining his offer.
Jake's ever growing love for music left him cooped up inside after school, and your quietness and determination to go to college had you in a similar position, book in hand rather than guitar.
His summers were spent with his brothers rehearsing from sun up to sun down, your summers were spent helping your parents take care of your animals, their age becoming more of a hindrance with time.
To your delight, your changed dynamic didn’t stop you from the privilege of getting to hear the boys sing and play. Plenty of times through high school, Kelly and Karen invited you to shows the boys had in town. You’d find yourself at the back of the venues, nodding along to the beat as you watched them in their element, like fish in water. You watched and daydreamed about simpler times, the five of you in the Kiska’s old shed around the back of their house as they imitated their favorite artists.
Things were different, sure, but all those feelings you harbored over the years never faltered. Every time Jake was in your presence, the butterflies made themselves known. When you guys did have an actual conversation from time to time, the way he listened so intently to what you were saying, his eyes locked on yours, still had you ready to cower.
Second semester of your senior year, you’d gotten accepted into your dream school in Berkeley, California. You were ecstatic, followed quickly by fear, as you’ve never been further than 25 miles outside of your small hometown. But this is what you’d always wanted, and you were well aware that growth began outside of your comfort zone.
Graduation day was the last time you saw Jake before you shipped yourself off, your parents making you all pose for a picture in your cap and gowns outside of the school. You were set to leave for California the very next day for a summer with the Berkeley University Peace Corps, a million feelings bubbling inside of you.
“You’ll be great out there. Show them that small town girls can do it too,” was the last thing Jake ever said to you, and you carried that with you for the next four years.
Berkeley became your full time residence, your busy schedule of studying, organizing protests against the war, and your many new friends keeping you more than busy.
Your parents came to visit a few times, and you managed to make it home for Christmas one year, but other than that, Berkeley was your entire life.
But through all the chaos that kept you occupied during college, late at night, when the dust had settled, you found yourself thinking about Jake. Wondering what he was doing, if he still played the guitar. Did he have a girlfriend now? Was he engaged? Married, even? Did he have a kid on the way? Did he already have a kid?
Four years. Four years of those questions ringing in your head until you finally got your answer.

It was about a week after you graduated from Berkeley, you were back in the comfort of your hometown, not realizing how much you missed it until you were back.
Your mom packed up several dozen eggs from your chicken coop, and asked you to take them into town to sell them, and you readily agreed.
As you unloaded the wooden crate full of eggs, a familiar voice stopped you dead in your tracks.
“Y/n?”
You whipped your head around, being met face to face with a more developed version of your Jake. His hair was much longer now, and he had a five o’clock shadow gracing his face. He smiled at you widely as you stared at him in bewilderment.
“Jake,” you finally breathed out.
He scooped you into a tight side hug, “it’s been so long. How have things been?”
Feeling like that same shy little girl from 16 years ago, you shrunk under his touch.
“Things have been good. I graduated from Berkeley last week… so that’s cool.”
Without the instructions to do so, Jake picked up the eggs and began walking with you, “cool? Y/n that's amazing. I’m happy for you.”
“Thanks.”
He had a crooked smile on his face as he sat the eggs down on a vendor’s table, “so what’s next?”
“Well, I don’t really know, haven’t thought that far yet. But I missed home, so I thought I’d come back and figure it out,” you spoke meekly, avoiding his piercing gaze.
There was a smile in his voice, “Little ol’ Townsend missed you too.”
The vendor handed you over the money for the eggs, and you shoved it into your pocket, turning to Jake with an awkward stance.
“I- I gotta get going now,” you spoke up, looking at him briefly before tearing your eyes from his beautiful face.
“Yeah me too. I’ll see you around, take care.” With a final nod and smile, Jake shoved his hands into his pockets and left, and once he was out of sight, you rushed back into your dad's truck, slamming the door and dropping your head into your hands.
You had a working theory in college, that if and when you saw Jake again, things would be different. You figured the distance would put an end to your longing, and that he wouldn’t have as much control over you as he did for all those years. But as you sat in your dad’s truck in the town square, you knew you were more than likely cursed to forever be in love with Jacob Thomas Kiszka.
If only you knew what lied ahead…

Hi, Sullllllll!!!! Saw requests were open and just had to jump in! Out of all the fellas you write for, who is most to least likely to get scared in a haunted house? In your professional opinion, of course.
easily scared headcanons
[a/n: hi my friend! of course, I got you! this was sm fun, thanks for requesting! ♥️]
Most:
Ensign Baker, my sweet boy, is probably the most jittery out of the bunch. Though he’ll gladly do anything you ask around this time of year, he loathes the scary, scream-inducing kinda stuff. Typically, he’s the one hiding behind you, urging you forward first, trying not to get his heart pounding in the first five minutes. You don’t mind, happily holding his hand through the whole maze, but at the end, it’s Thomas who swears he’ll never do anything of the sort again. Though, somehow, every Halloween, he finds himself at the beginning of some kind of haunted house or something scary along the lines, and he just can’t help it. You always offer to go do something else, but he’d rather go through the attraction seven times then make you go through it alone.
Middle-ground:
John Adams, pretends that he’s got nothing to be afraid of, while in fact, he is biting on his bottom lip so hard that it’s actually begun to bleed. You’ll never catch him slacking, though, whenever you manage to peel him away from his work to something festive for the season, he’s always pushing you away from something scary. His cousin, sure, loves these kinds of things, however, he just really rather not. While is amazing at swallowing his screams and bypassing all the things that make you yelp, he doesn’t make it through the entire thing with his head up. Every time you look his way though, he’s perfectly normal, and you almost pout. How is he so nonchalant? And then Sam tells you that he’s actually the biggest scaredy cat of them all. While you hold in a fit of laughter, the two of them get into an argument, Sam laughing loudly.
Least:
Robert Townsend has the most bored, unamused, and annoyed look on his face the entire time. His expression screams ‘is this over yet’, and you clinging to his arm is not helping in the slightest. While you shout at whatever crosses your path, Robert sighs, pushing onwards, dragging you along with him. You could pout and give him a whole bunch of time to actually enjoy himself, and he just can’t bring himself to. He sees everything coming, brown eyes moving across the dark rooms, and he doesn’t understand how you don’t see it either. He tries to enjoy it, for you, but it’s just not something is going to be excited about. Sure, there’s plenty things that bring that small smile to his lips, most of them involve you, yet, no haunted attraction will make him jump. He’s the most boring partner for these kinds of things.
Bonus:
Caleb Brewster likely laughs at whatever does manage to scare him, even if you’re attached to his arm, a bit jittery from the fear. If he does see the jump coming, he’ll point it out, fingers brushing your hiding eyes to try and get you to see it before it happens. If something appears that he doesn’t foresee, if the fear flashes in his eyes, you don’t see it come across his face. Rather, he’ll cover his yelp with a laugh, just after swallowing his fear down. Caleb has seen it all, but he still enjoys doing these kinda things, even if you insist this time around you won’t be bested so easily. If anything, he likes how tightly you grip his arm, and if he even tries to move away from you, you give him the best glower you can, and laughs that he was only kidding. I think that he’s so easily amused, that no matter it be you, or the scary stuff, he’d do anything you asked as long as you were there to enjoy it with him.

UAP Timeline
The following timeline—last updated on July 27, 2023—attempts to chronicle major UAP/UFO-related events in the United States from 1947 to the present. Event summaries are likely to be updated or revised pending further research. New entries may be added to reflect the unfolding of current events.
1947JUN24 American aviator and later politician Kenneth Albert Arnold reports the first post-World War II sighting of an "unidentified flying object" (UFO) in the U.S., claiming to have observed nine "shiny" objects flying in tandem at speeds of approximately 1,932 km/h near Mount Rainier, Washington. [Ref.]
1947JUL08–1947JUL09 United States Air Force (USAF) personnel contacts the Associated Press on July 8th to report that they recovered debris from a crashed "flying disc" near Roswell, New Mexico. The U.S. Army retracts the press release on July 9th and publicly announces that the debris recovered were pieces of a weather balloon kite. [Ref.]
1948JAN01–1949APR27 The USAF initiates "Project SIGN" for the purpose of systematically studying UFO phenomena to assess their threat to national security—entailing the collection, evaluation, and dissemination within the government of related data. [Ref.]
1949AUG10–1949DEC27 The USAF initiates "Project GRUDGE" for the purpose of alleviating public fears concerning UFO phenomena. [Ref.]
1952MAR01–1969DEC17 The USAF conducts a systematic study of UFO phenomena under the code name "Project BLUEBOOK", primarily to determine their threat to national security and to scientifically analyze the associated data. [Ref.]
1952JUL12–1952JUL29 A series of UFO sightings in Washington, D.C. are reported by air traffic controllers, airline pilots, and radar center personnel at the Washington National Airport and Andrews Air Force Base. Following these events, USAF directors hold a press conference at the Pentagon and announce that the visual sightings were misidentified aerial phenomena (e.g., stars, meteors, and unknown radar targets) caused by "temperature inversion". [Ref.]
1952JAN01–1988DEC31 The Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) is founded by Jim and Coral Lorenzen for the purpose of conducting scientific field investigations of UFO incidents, largely directed by University of Arizona atmospheric physicist James E. McDonald and University of California, Berkeley professor James Harder. [Ref.]
1956OCT24–Present The National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) is founded by inventor Thomas Townsend Brown, USMC Maj. (Ret.) Donald Keyhoe, and USN RADM Chief (Ret.) Delmer S. Fahrney in response to a series of nationally publicized UFO incidents in the 1960s, and to conduct transparent scientific investigations of UFO phenomena while serving as an informational depository for civilian Americans and governmental agencies. [Ref.]
1966SEP Ten intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at the Minot Air Force Base (North Dakota) are temporarily rendered unlaunchable by a bright flashing UFO hovering near the perimeter of the base, an incident that was reported by the Minot Daily News on December 6, 1966, and which was later recounted in detail by retired USAF Capt. and Minuteman ICBM launch crew commander David D. Schindele during a press conference in September 2010. [Ref. 1, Ref. 2]
1967MAR24 Ten intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at the Malmstrom Air Force Base (Montana) are temporarily rendered inoperable by a glowing red UFO hovering high above the base, an incident that was reported by former USAF Capt. Robert Salas, retired USAF nuclear missile targeting officer Robert Jamison, and other former personnel during a press conference in September 2010. [Ref.]
1975OCT28–1975NOV11 The North American Air Defense Combat Operations Center (NORAD COC) receives numerous reports of bright, fast-moving UFOs hovering over nuclear missile launch sites and bomber bases, primarily from military personnel, security alert teams, and air defense staff at the Loring Air Force Base (Maine), Wurtsmith AFB (Michigan), Malmstrom AFB (Montana), Minot AFB (North Dakota), and Canadian Forces Station (Falconbridge, Ontario). The UAPs reportedly evade all pursuit efforts by USAF F‐106 interceptors. [Ref. 1, Ref. 2]
2004NOV14 USAF fighter pilots Cmdr. David Fravor and Lt. Cmdr. Alex Dietrich of the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group attempt to engage a white Tic-Tac-shaped UFO off the coast of Southern California, which the USS Princeton (CG-59) had been tracking for two weeks prior. Fravor and Dietrich discuss the incident in detail during a 2021 interview on 60 Minutes. [Ref. 1, Ref. 2]
2007JAN01–2012DEC31 The Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) is established within The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency for the purpose of studying unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). [Ref.]
2015JAN01 NASA provides $1.1 million in funding to the Center for Theological Inquiry (CTI) to study the societal implications of astrobiology and how humans might react to an announcement of the discovery of life beyond Earth, the results of which were published in CTI's magazine Fresh Thinking (Issue No. 1, 2018, pages 32-45; Issue No. 2, 2019, pages 6 to 15). [Ref.]
2017JAN01–2020DEC31 The Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) is established within the Office of Naval Intelligence for the purpose of standardizing, collecting, and reporting UAP sightings. [Ref.]
2020APR27 The Pentagon formally releases three videos—"FLIR", "GIMBAL", and "GOFAST"—containing footage of UAPs that were captured by infrared cockpit instrumentation displays from United States Navy (USN) fighter jets, which also records audio communications between the pursuing pilots. [Ref.]
2021APR16 The Pentagon confirms that publicly-leaked video footage and photographs of triangular and spherical UAPs were captured by USN personnel aboard the USS Russell in 2019. [Ref.]
2021JUN25 The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) releases its Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, which details its assessment of 144 unexplained military reports of UAP encounters between 2004 and 2021, the majority of which were registered across radar, infrared, and electro-optical sensors. [Ref.]
2021JUL26–Present Harvard University astrophysicist Avi Loeb launches the Galileo Project, an international scientific research effort "to bring the search for extraterrestrial technological signatures of Extraterrestrial Technological Civilizations (ETCs) from accidental or anecdotal observations and legends to the mainstream of transparent, validated and systematic scientific research". [Ref.]
2023APR19 The Pentagon releases video footage of a metallic, spherical UAP that was captured by an MQ-9 drone in the Middle East. [Ref.]
2023JUN05 David Charles Grusch—a USAF officer and former intelligence official within the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and National Reconnaissance Office (NRO)—publically claims that (1) he was a representative to the UAP Task Force from 2021 to 2021 and served as NGA’s co-liaison for UAP analysis, and (2) that he submitted extensive classified information to Congress and the Intelligence Community Inspector General concerning a highly secretive UAP recovery program that is in possession of "non-human" craft and "dead pilots". [Ref.]
2023JUN27 In an exclusive interview with NewsNation Washington correspondent Joe Khalil, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio states that most of the individuals who have come forward to share their first-hand knowledge of an alleged secret UAP retrieval program within the U.S. government "have held very high clearances and high positions within our government", but are "fearful of their jobs, fearful of their clearances, fearful of their career", and in some cases, "fearful of harm coming to them". [Ref.]
2023JUL15 The U.S. Senate approves the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Disclosure Act, which declares that "All federal government records concerning Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (government-derived word for UFO) should carry a presumption of immediate disclosure", and which is intended to expedite the disclosure of UAP-related records being held by governmental agencies. There's a couple of things I am intrigued about when it comes to Carré and Mimi's approach when making this video. One of them is the somewhat rather unusual thinking as it is practically outside the box type thinking, the other is what influenced the video. It has that eerie version of Red Riding on it. It's the random weirdness that makes it so in  Watch  https://youtu.be/sqSY0XM-bdg Stream debut Rowsie album “I” now here: https://open.spotify.com/album/1vUCgkKi4WXtgQDkQSm0k6?si=fjvm_6ElSO-07FOr15joAg Buy the download, CD or vinyl from Bandcamp here: https://rowsie.bandcamp.com/album/rowsie-2 Helen Townsend releases intense and artful video for 'Battlefield'! Straight from the start I was hooked on this simply because of the sombre approach to the video and the retro feel. The battlefield is more of an emotional one as she reflects back on an emotional past which still causes her pain. It's a collection friendship-themed one-shots/drabbles. The first part is somewhere but I can't find it so I'll add the link when I do :) I don't want to change the order, so have fun with the second part for now!
part one part three
“True friendship comes when the silence between two people is comfortable.”
— David Tyson
"Again, hiding behind champagne glasses and a stoic mien?"
Alastair turned toward the source of the voice, finding no other than familiar brown eyes on him. "And I thought I'd be safe here."
"You are never safe from the power of friendship," Ariadne Bridgestock - or rather Kamala Joshi - said as she swooped into the chair next to him. The gesture was elegant, her silks moving with her in an impressive arch. Alastair had seated himself where he was at the beginning of the evening - with one of his nicer attires. Eugenia had implied he put effort because Thomas was attending. Alastair dismissed it and insisted it's due to the event. Which he had no idea what it was being held for.
"Or the power of a woman trying to escape suitors inviting her to dance," propounded Alastair, causing Kamala to laugh. "Have you found no new women to lay your eyes on?"
"Well, the selection is not particularly plentiful. Anna is there with her family, as always," Alastair didn't miss the bitter tone that hoard in Kamala's voice. But it was lighter each day. It was hard to miss fashionable and proud Anna in the crowd, surrounded by her family. Her brother and cousins were laughing and mingling around her, and she seemed oblivious to the attention the two young Shadowhunters paid her. Matthew Fairchild, who engaged in conversation with Anna, did notice. He shot them an obscure look, leaned in, and whispered into Anna's ear.
Kamala had a distant look in her eyes as if she remembered a past she could not reach again. Alastair promptly ignored the fact that they were the ones now being observed. "Well, I'm not a judge of women, but I'm not sure Miss Townsend would appreciate your remark," He attempted. It worked, and Kamala turned back to look at him.
Kamala cleaned her throat and regarded her hands before raising her chin to meet his eyes. They were no longer far away. "Well, I daresay my taste is less bland than those English folks."
Swiftly enough, they were deep into conversation. Alastair was never a person of big crowds. He didn't need many people, just as they did not need him. But those who were held close to his heart always were different. It was easier to be himself - the way he hadn't been a very long time. When Alastair devoted all of himself to them and opened his heart, they did not stomp on it. They cradled it with care and appreciation and accepted all the broken parts across it.
"How could you escape the horror that is girls gossiping about young bachelors this time?" Alastair asked. Every social occurrence he attended, a group of young ladies were crowded, waiting for the gentlemen to sweep them to dance and talk. He's seen some eyes on him, even though Alastair knew his reputation proceeded him whenever it comes to suitable marriage material. Not that he was interested in getting married. Or girls. Yet, sometimes he marveled at how desperate they seem to dance with someone.
"I wager on 10 Sterlings you wanted to be in my place, so you could hear all they blather about Thomas-"
"What about Thomas?" Alastair inquired, far too quickly for it to be nonchalant.
Kamala eyed Alastair mischievously. "Well, isn't it delightful how lively you become at the mention of our handsome fella?"
Alastair groaned and pressed his lips. "I wouldn't," he spoke equitably as he held his chin up. "And Thomas isn't interested in any of them, so I don't see why to make myself sick with-"
"Jealousy?"
Alastair glared at her. "Socialization."
"Oh, big aloof Alastair," She smiled at him cheekily. "Always so rational." She knew it's not true. Not when she had to stop Alastair from confronting Anna the day she told him about their relationship. He had held his dagger and proclaimed to want a 'face to face, adults dialogue.' Kamala had not bought it for a second. "When would come the day you-"
Kamala stopped abruptly and swore under her breath. If there were anyone near to hear her, she would have gotten scandalized stares. Yet, they were in a faraway corner of the ballroom, and the only person to detect her swarm of words was Alastair. He merely quirked an eyebrow.
"There," she huffed and patted her skirts in dismay. She tilted her head imperceptibly. "To your right."
Alastair examined the crowd. He saw two figures heading in their direction. He looked back at Kamala but could see them in the corner of his eyes. He prayed whatever ploy they have it wouldn't involve chatting with the two of them. He was having fun.
Kamala gave him a light kick under the table. Play nice, she mouthed at him. He fought the urge to roll his eyes.
"Mr. Carstairs, Ms. Bridestock," greeted Thoby in a sickly pleasant tone. The two men came to a halt right in front of Alastair and Kamala. And while her face was positively blank, he noted the strain in Kamala's shoulders by her adopted surname being used.
Alastair had to remind himself glaring and rolling eyes at people is considered rude. He kept his features stiff and bowed his head in greeting. For a few seconds, none of them filled the awkward silence that settled in their little group. That, until Jarred Gladstone spoke up.
"It's a fine evening, isn't it?"
"Certainly," Kamala replied, and there was a frosty note in her tone. Hidden behind a sweet smile, the only reason Alastair detected it in the first place was due to how well he knew Kamala. "The Herondales do magic whenever it comes to how to throw a party."
They hummed in response and went to talk about the last enclave meeting. Alastair used all his willpower not to stare at them and ask why they neared them at the first place. He knew, of course. But it was fun to see them struggling to keep the conversation going.
How far would it last until they decide to cut to the reason for their approach? Alastair mused. Until then, he entertained himself with their countenances to his dry answeres.
It was shortly after, Jarred shook his hand impatiently. "How come both of you were yet to dance tonight?"
Alastair raised his eyebrows at Kamala in what was meant to convey, is this what their best white men can do? However, he replied: "The right opportunity didn't strike us."
What he truly wanted to utter was, are you inviting me to dance? But he knew none of the partners of the conversation would appreciate it. It was an all too perilous territory to joke about.
A line appeared on Thoby's forehead. "What?"
Kamala flashed a wide, fake smile at him. "So many people on the dancefloor, you see."
The music shifted to a familiar one. Dancers cleared the way to new ones, Kamala caught the first opportunity before anyone else could speak up and said, "Oh! Alastair promised me this dance," just as Jarred fixed his jacket and asked, "Will you accompany me to a dance?"
Everyone stared at the other. Only the music playing accompanying the chatter around was heard. None of them uttered a sound.
"Ah." Jarred's face fell.
"We will be going," Thoby dived in to help his friend. Kamala rose up from her seat.
"Yes, you wouldn't want your fiancee waiting," Alastair murmured as he departed. It was nicer than saying, aren't you engaged, Mr. Baybrook? Why should you have your eyes on the unmarried single fellows?
They stepped away together from the two men. When they were swooning around on the dance floor, Kamala commented. "You could've been nicer, Alastair."
"What's fun in being nice?" he spun her in her place effortlessly, every step in tune with the beat.
Kamala rolled her eyes and retorted, "You can benefit from not being broody and cold all times a day."
"You think I'm cold and broody?" asked Alastair with a hurt look on his face. The ounce of distinguishable teasing in his voice made it clear it was just a joke, so she went along.
"Me? of course not," she patted his arm. "You're just very, awfully bad at common manners."
"My manners are perfectly fine," sniffed Alastair. Kamala moved and stepped on Alastair's foot. He glanced at her in a jolt of surprise. Kamala was a good dancer. Which means it was intentional.
"What was that for?" he inquired.
"Don't dispute what I say."
"Dear Lord. Your manners are just as bad as mine."
Kamala battled the smile that threatened to spread on her face. "You have no proof."
"My aching feet is enough of evidence."
"Don't be a fusspot!"
Alastair gaped at her. "I cannot believe you just called me a fusspot."
"I just voiced the truth," objected Kamala, failing to stifle her laugher. "And I am glad we agree, you need a re-learn about manners. I can be your teacher."
"Don't think yours are much better," he countered.
"Oh?"
"I see how it is," Alastair teased. "You chose me as an easy getaway from your bothering suitors."
Kamala averted his eyes. "Perhaps so."
"Rather cunning, I must say."
"If it comes from you it is a great fluttery."
They both chuckled. Alastair gave one last offense, "Using a person as a shield from an unwanted company doesn't sound very well-mannered, is it?"
"Oh, but you don't mind, do you?"
Perhaps she didn't expect his gaze to turn earnest, but Alastair couldn't help it. They talked low and quiet before, but now he whispered. "Of course not. Helping each other avoid undesired throng is included in our friendship terms."
Kamala observed his shift of tone, her soft smile touched with honesty. She leaned her face a little closer. "And I'm immensely grateful for that."
Alastair felt fuzzy inside. He was astonished when he felt tears prickling the concern of his eyes, so he backed away slightly. They both stopped at the end of the music. Dancing partners moved out as new ones stepped into the dancefloor. Kamala peeked around her and saw Anna has disappeared from the hall. Jarred Gladstone was glaring at them and quickly turned away when their eyes met.
"Another dance?" Alastair asked. His voice was slightly thick with emotion. Kamala just grinned and nodded as they adjusted to a new starting pose, not addressing the tears Alastair held back.
For a little, they just danced in comfortable silence, only the music filling the air. Words seemed so useless sometimes. Because when you knew someone's soul, there was no need to say much. If you learned a map of their heart, you could navigate through it and be content in the knowledge your presence is enough. Upon time silence reigned and enveloped the both of them, words weren't needed to fill it. Kamala could recall a handful of times it was just the two of them. At Cornwall Gardens, with Risa to watch the two from afar. At patrols. At walks and visits they took to wherever their heart told them to go. They could recall the gestures of care and love that were evident in the silence they shared.
Alastair was trapped in his own thoughts, it seemed. After a particular swift move, Alastair broke the quiet around them. "I never noticed how long this song is."
A pair of golden-brown eyes fixed on his face. She quirked an eyebrow at him. "That desperate to escape me, are you?"
Alastair rolled his eyes. "I find sitting in a dark corner with my book more pleasant than dancing with everyone's eyes on me."
"And that is where I come into the picture," Kamala laughed. "One of my tasks is to make sure you suffer at least the needed amount of social interaction during events."
Alastair huffed. "Where exactly did you bring it from?"
"Oh, that is included in our friendship deal as well."
The dark-eyed boy studied her for a few moments. "We should write a book," he advised. Kamala would have clapped her hands if she could.
"Lovely! Friendship Guide of 1904, written by your loyal, Stairstairs GrumpyFace and-"
"And a rising dresses-shredder."
"Rude," Kamala scrunched her nose, but her shoulders shook in the force of her contained laughter and betrayed her.
"I just voiced the truth. And I told you never to call me that." He complained. Kamala smirked at him in that way she sometimes did, full of carelessness and joy. While he would never admit it, his chest felt warm when she looked at him that way. She seemed happy, and Alastair reflected that happiness.
That was nice to have a friend like her, Alastair mused. Easy-going and kind as she was, with the hint of impishness in the tilt of her smile. Their sort of understanding felt different, more grounded one may say, than others. It had held something inside it that other companionships he had, how very little they were, dearth of. An additional thread between them. Similar marks, knowing eyes.  Their other friends could not see it. They never could. Kamala was the spirit of changing who burst down into Alastair's life and refused to leave ever since. Not that he complained.
Their bond consisted of mutual understanding, the sort he craved desperately in the past. He had never imagined it'd come as naturally as it was to him. Calm as raindrops and warm as the burning wood crackling in a fireplace. At times it was as if Kamala knew what his thoughts were. And in return, he was given to know hers. When the silence surrounding Alastair filled with banter and laughter, his feelings bubbled at his chest from the force of his adoration held for this woman. Kamala Joshi was a new star lighted up in his almost starless sky.
The last note of the song played. "Let's head back to our seats. I have had enough of the humdrum English music and dance for one night."
Kamala couldn't help but agree. Then she added, "If I recall properly, calling you in silly names was explicitly stated in our friendship contract. Stairstaris."
"You are unbelievable," he cut in and made his way to the table he'd left before. Kamala followed him laughing.
She put into effect her most graceful smile. "We can spend the rest of the night creating funny names for each member of the enclave." They've played that game before when they were very bored. Alastair had tried hard not to laugh in an enclave meeting that occurred the day after. When he was spoken to, he almost snorted because of the silly nickname Kamala had glued to who called him.
"It would be nice," Alastair agreed and then looked outside the window of the ballroom. The stars were climbing in the black canvas of the sky. "But a nice walk in the garden would do just as well."
Kamala's smile widened.

unfinished/scrapped fics!!
[a/n: omg this is like a huge lot of fics I started and never finished 🤡most of these cut off so quick, I’m so sorry! Most of them are Paul fics I scrapped because I felt like I wasn’t capturing his character correctly. Regardless, please enjoy!]
Nothing [Paul Revere] “You’re staring, Paul,”
It’s Joseph’s comment that snaps him out of his trance, brown eyes falling back to the table to stare down the inside of his beer bottle.
“Was not.”
He dares to argue, receiving a soft chortle from the Doctor beside him. If he’d had any chance of denying it, he’d most certainly blown it.
“I see you’ve taken a liking to y/n.” “So it seems.”
Paul scratches at his chin, bottom lip folded into a tiny pout. If anyone else found out about this, he’d never hear the end of it.
“They’re very nice, Paul. Why don’t you walk on over and say hello,”
He grumbles something under his breath, grabbing the neck of the bottle in front of him and taking a sip.
“What’s the business between them and John?”
If Joseph notices the quick topic change, he doesn’t say a word about it.
“y/n is helping John out with a case, if I remember correctly. Sam had mentioned it a day or so ago.”
Paul doesn’t answer, but takes another drink.
“If you’re so worried about them coddling up to John, why don’t you go talk to them?” “Its not that.”
Ah, so that’s what’s eating the courageous Paul Revere up inside.
“Afraid of rejection, friend?”
It’s his silence that gives him his answer.
“y/n...isn’t like that.”
Paul nods in agreement, but makes no move to get up and talk. There’s a lull in the conversation, one that is only ended by you.
“Good afternoon!”
You greet them both, hugging a stack of Manila folders snug against your chest. John and yourself had just finished up a agonizing round of paperwork, one that you were happy to be finished with.
“Good afternoon,”
Joseph replies with a contagious smile that you couldn’t help but return.
“Afternoon,”
Paul’s tone was no less cheery, gravely voice sending a chill right down your spine. Smile widening, you ask if you can sit. Both men nod, one a bit more enthusiastically then you’d expect.
“Everything going alright with John?”
Paul finds himself asking, thumb tracing the opening of the now empty beer bottle.
“It’s going great! I never expected him to ask me for help.”
You admit.
Sting [Ensign Baker] The irritating sting of sadness poked at your insides, jabbing every time you tried to dismiss the feeling. Trying to rationalize it, you fell short attempting to rid of it. Jostling the bag of takeout carried in one hand, you dug around for the keys using the other hand.
“Hey! Welcome home!”
For a beautiful moment, the emotions flew out the window. Your heart leaped, for being slightly startled and for the amazing sight of Thomas standing in the doorway with open arms.
“Hey! And thanks, happy to be home.”
You answer confidently, because you were happy to be home. He notices the slight deterioration in your mood though, as you bump pass him and put your keys away.
“Everything okay?”
Pretty much feeling your shoulders deflate, you spin to face him with the biggest smile you could pull out of thin air.
“Mhm! Just tired.”
Thomas sends you a look of ‘we’ll talk about it later’ which means he totally knew you were lying—but relieved in the fact he gave you a moment to breathe before bringing it up.
“I’ll take this-“
He reaches for the bag that held both of your food, and your work bag. You comply, letting them both fall limp in his arms.
“You get changed, okay?” “Sounds like a plan.”
You shoot him a double thumbs up, a small smile twitching at his lips.
Rain [Paul Revere] The air was humid, but somehow a gentle breeze filtered through. You hadn’t seen Paul so at peace, no tension filled shoulders in sight. He walked hand in hand with you, giving it a tiny squeeze every now and again. It made your knees weak the small smile he gave you when he turned to get your attention.
“(y/n), I think it’s going to rain.”
You tilt your head upwards, noticing the dark clouds rolling in rather fast. Something swelled in your chest though.
“What a shame,”
Offering him a sad smile now, you lean your head against his shoulder.
“It’s been such a nice day.”
Identity [Paul Revere]
Paul was usually meticulous with his work, eyes ever focused and glued on his projects. Although, you could carry a conversation with him while he worked, he’s quite the multitasker. He chats along with you as you perch yourself somewhere in the garage. But, there were times when you wished he would just be a little less risky, and a bit more careful—
“Shit!”
It startles you, eyes yanking away from the book you previously had your nose in. Paul nearly threw his hammer, it clattering on to the work bench as his face scrunched up in pain. He immediately grabbed at his hand, squeezing it as if it would alleviate any pain.
“Oh my god, did you just hit your hand?”
Jumping off the counter, you begin to fret, worry bubbling. He’s hidden several wounds from you before, because they “didn’t hurt that badly”. Burns, scars, bruises-but hearing him get such injury is clenching your chest with agony.
“Yeah, ‘m fine.”
Paul grumbles, giving the hammer a nasty glower. You ignore his blatant lie and reach for his hand.
“C’mon Hon, really. It’s fine.” “I told you to wear gloves, at least,”
Ignoring him once more, he finally relents and releases his injured appendage.
“Paul, seriously? I can actually see it throbbing.”
Burnt [Paul Revere]
A man of many, many words, suddenly rendered speechless and dwindled down to a mere blushing mess.
“You think so?”
Half of him felt rather betrayed by his own mind, but the other half felt surrendered to the fluttering in his chest. You just looked so…so alluring, features lit up by the stars. His calloused fingers twitched just to be so close to yours, and his heart began to beat louder and louder and louder—
“I think so,”
You agreed, finally coming to a semi-conclusion that the constellation was Ursa Major. Fingers tapping on the warm blanket, you wondered if you looked at the sky long enough, would it hide your rosy cheeks.
“You know your stuff.”
Shoulders slumping a bit in relaxation, you turn to give him a small smile.
“That’s all John. I’m guilty of using his telescope every once in a while.”
A twinge of jealously catches in his chest, but it fades rather fast.
“You know, (y/n),
Jersey Skies [Ensign Baker]
There’s something absolutely beautiful about when you sit beside him in the backseat of the car, shoulder to shoulder, and nearly the same height. It just adds to the long, long list of things that you admire about him, and seeing his brown eyes after a long day is almost sleep inducing. Almost. “Is there something on my face?” He’d been so mesmerized by the lights blurring by out the window just moments before, that you’d thought you could get away with it. “Yeah…wait what?” You shake off the dazed feeling, shoulders rising in embarrassment of being caught staring. It’s dark, the only light illuminating is those from storefronts and neon signs. Although partied out, both of you remain sober, so the loopy lovey dove feelings butterflying in your stomach were not due to intoxication. “ Even [Enoch Hale] As best as you tried to hide it, you are almost certain Enoch had seen the flash of confusion that came across your face. It was like staring at two of him, they nearly looked like twins-the only way to tell was because Enoch was a just a bit shorter.
“It’s really a pleasure to meet you, y/‘n.”
Nathan grins down at you, and you can’t help but smile back, because it’s so utterly contagious. He was a ball of energy, something that clearly bothers Enoch, as he is rolling his eyes to the high heavens from behind.
“The pleasures all mine, really.”
You insist, giving in to the glee that you’ve finally met one of Enoch’s siblings. He has eleven, so you’ve barely made anything but a dent, but it still progress.
“It’s so coincidental that you’d happen to be in town, Nathan.”
At the sound of his voice, the blonde jerks his head up. Something piqued his interest in the statement.
“Oh? Well, I’d heard from Samuel-“ “Rat.”
You push back a laugh.
“I’m sure you pried it out of him.” “No-well, maybe.”
There’s a twinkle in his eye that screams his guilt. Enoch sighs.
“Now that you’ve met y/n, is there any other aspect of my life you’d like to tread on?” “Absolutely.”
Nathan takes a long intake of air, starting to count on his fingers.
“Why don’t you—“ “Never mind. I regret asking.”
Really [Robert Townsend] “Seven across, first Doctor Mid-nite.”
He’s standing in the doorway to the living room, his crossword from the newspaper in hand and a pen behind his ear.
“Sorry?” “Seven across. Who’s the first Doctor Mid-nite?” “McNider.”
Robert grumbles something along the lines of ‘who would actually know that but you’ and scribbles it in while balancing the paper on the wall.
“That was actually a crossword question?”
You can feel your eyebrow quirk upwards in stupor.
“Yeah. Figured you would know.” “Didn’t you ever read All-American comics?”

Teams: Manly's axing after show-stopping game
Tumblr media
The NRL's form player of the year, Tom Trbojevic, is set to make his return for the Sea Eagles after missing round 23 with a facial injury.Last week, Trbojevic was ruled out as a precaution amid conflicting reports the superstar fullback had damaged a pre-existing facial fracture.

Suli has been dropped to reserves, replaced by Brad Parker who slots straight into the centres.

City Lights Booksellers’ Pride 2020 Reading List
Tumblr media
This June (and always), we look to our queer elders who came before us. Without them and their courage to riot and demand equality, we wouldn't have the Pride we know today. We especially want to name our Black trans siblings, who to this day face disproportionate discrimination and violence in this system.  To honor our own San Francisco history / herstory / theirstory, here are 54 titles to commemorate the 54 years since the Compton Cafeteria Riots in the Tenderloin.
