So... You Wanna Hyperfixate on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As a neurodivergent person, I know what it's like to come across a piece of media and start to obsess over it. To the point where it consumes all of your thoughts and waking hours. One of my personal favorites is the M.C.U., or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, there is a lot of incomplete information out there on this franchise, so I've got you covered.

What is the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, or M.C.U., is a multi-media franchise adapting characters and storylines from Marvel Comics, and is comprised of films, television series, short films, web series and even, appropriately enough, tie-in comics. Beginning in 2008 with the film "Iron Man", it has continued to flourish and produce new entries until the present day. For the purposes of this post, we will be covering only live-action and animated entries in the franchise, totaling 70 entries as of June 2024.

What is the Marvel Cinematic Universe About?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is divided into two Sagas, both of which are further divided into Phases. Phases are a grouping of projects, while Sagas are a grouping of Phases.

The two Sagas of the MCU are the Infinity Saga, comprising of Phases 1, 2 and 3, and the Multiverse Saga, comprising of Phases 4, 5, and 6.

The Infinity Saga revolves around the six building blocks of reality, known as the Infinity Stones, and how they impact the lives of the groups of superheroes known as The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as the quest of the power-hungry alien Thanos to obtain the six Infinity Stones. The Infinity Saga is comprised entirely of movies, specifically the first 23 movies in the franchise, with the 23rd, Spider-Man: Far From Home, serving as an epilogue to the entire Saga.

The Multiverse Saga, currently ongoing and roughly at its midpoint, revolves around the Multiverse, a collection of infinite alternative realities where events unfolded just slightly differently, resulting in vastly different outcomes. The villain of this saga is slated to be the time-traveling, reality-hopping Kang the Conqueror, as well as his Variants, or alternate reality counterparts. The Multiverse Saga is comprised of the 24th film (Black Widow) onwards, as well as the 13th television series (WandaVision) onwards. (See below for full film and series listings.)

There is also an unofficial Saga formally known as The Defenders Saga, comprised of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher, culminating in The Defenders. The series Echo has retroactively been added to The Defenders Saga.

What is included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

As mentioned above, we will be tackling everything except the tie-in comics, which results in 70 entries across the following formats; films, television series, short films, web series, animated series and telefilms.

[1] While Helstrom was originally meant to tie in with a Ghost Rider tv series, itself a spin-off of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Ghost Rider was scrapped and later statements from the show runner and some actors put its connectivity into question. However, the show itself slots in perfectly into the tapestry of the MCU and can be treated as equally as any other part of the franchise.

[2] The Daily Bugle is divided into three "seasons"; one marketing Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019 on YouTube, one marketing Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 and 2022 on TikTok, and one marketing the movie Morbius (which is NOT in the MCU), also in 2022 and also on TikTok. This third "season" is non-canonical to the MCU and can be disregarded.

What Are Some Storylines To Look Forward To?

Anti-Superhuman Sentiment: A huge undercurrent throughout the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, both films and television series, is an aversion to superhumans, which could eventually evolve into the anti-mutant hysteria of the comics when the X-Men arrive to the MCU.

Gods and Mythology: From the Asgardian pantheon with Thor to the Egyptian pantheon with Bast, Osiris and Khonshu, to the Vodou pantheon such as Papa Legba and Baron Samedi and the Greek pantheon with Zeus and Hercules, gods and mythology and alternate dimensions are present in several series of the MCU.

Demons and Witchcraft: I tried to avoid naming direct entries in this section in order to maximize surprises, but these themes are ones that truly ingrain Helstrom into the rest of franchise, tying into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Runaways, Cloak & Dagger, WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Where Can The Marvel Cinematic Universe Be Watched?

Disney+ has the vast majority of the MCU entries, at 62 of the 70 entries.

Hulu has two of the entries, the television series Cloak & Dagger and Helstrom.

Additionally, if you get a premium subscription to Hulu, you can also watch Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is otherwise unavailable to stream.

The CW App has one of the entries, the television series Runaways, due to being removed from Disney+ in May of 2023 as a result of cost-cutting measures. It can be streamed for free.

YouTube has all three of the web series; Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot, WHiH Newsfront and The Daily Bugle. Compilations of all individual episodes are searchable. Though 3 of the 10 WHiH Newsfront episodes are on Disney+ as special features for Ant-Man.

The final entry, the short film Peter's To-Do List, is only available physically on Blu-Ray copies of the Spider-Man: Far From Home film.

‘Thunderbolts’, ‘Blade’, ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’, ‘Secret Wars’ Among Disney Release Date Changes Due To WGA Strike

It feels like Covid all over again, but it’s not. Disney has just made a slew of release-date changes, many due to the impact of the WGA strike and screenplays not being ready and productions paused.

We already know that Thunderbolts and Blade are waiting the strike out before rolling cameras. Scripts aren’t fully ready in regards to the new Avengers movies. Avengers: Kang Dynasty goes from May 2, 2025, to May 1, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is also pushed another year from May 1, 2026, to May 7, 2027.

We told you that 2023 largely was safe in regards to staying intact (knock on wood), but the ramifications of the writers strike and productions paused will be felt throughout 2024 and beyond. Commence the great release-date shuffle by the motion picture studios.

Also the other delay here with the MCU titles is that Disney wants to make sure they’re better — better than what they’ve been doing from script stage to VFX in the wake of fan pans and lower post-pandemic box office results for such films as Eternals, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love & Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

First major change is that the untitled Deadpool movie will fire off next summer, May 3, while Captain America: Brave New World, gets pushed to July 26, 2024. Thunderbolts stays in 2024, moving off July 26 to December 20. Deadpool 3, in a vote of confidence moves up from Nov. 8, 2024.

Blade goes from September 6, 2024, to Feb. 14, 2025 — that Valentine’s Day/near Presidents Day frame which has been a sweet spot for MCU.

Fantastic Four shifts deeper into 2025, from February 14 to May 2.

Avatar 3 officially is delayed a year from December 20, 2024, to December 19, 2025. Which thus pushes other sequels from James Cameron as Avatar 4 shifts from December 18, 2026, to December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 goes from December 22, 2028, to December 19, 2031. While these scripts already are locked, the shift of movies due to the WGA strike is pushing the Avatar sequels around. Producer Jon Landau said the following today about the moves:

The Star Wars movies, which still are being baked, are getting kicked down the road like cans: One of them goes from December 19, 2025, to May 22, 2026. A another untitled one gets added on December 18, 2026.

The new live-action Moana movie with Dwayne Johnson has staked out the summer date of June 27, 2025, about a week earlier from its previous July 2 date.

The new Alien movie, which is shooting overseas, takes the Disney RSVP date of August 16, 2024.

What’s your favorite movie you saw in theaters this year? the only things i saw in theaters this year were two marvel movies because my brother and my friends insisted T_T neither are favorites but spiderman: no way home was much, much better than thor love and thunder.

What do you usually wear? t-shirts and gym shorts, but i switch to pants that are full-length (usually cotton salwar pants) the last 4 months of the year because mosquitoes

And I omitted a small collection of stuff I wrote as Advent Calender for @luzineko in 2020 because all of that is in German and as far as I remember the stories might be short but mostly finished, so no WIPs there technically either 😂

My mum and I are going to a planetarium show tonight - a show called „Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon“.

I almost shrieked when my mum found it yesterday bc I immediately had to think of @deadcatwithaflamethrower‘s OaLC-Series (HP, my absolute favourite fanfiction out there. Rly. If you haven’t, go read it right now. If you already have, go read it again! It’s absolutely brilliant!)

Fitting to that I’m actually re-reading the series right now and when I opened my e-reader and read another page I came to this scene from Part II:

Just thinking about Murderbot questions not (yet) answered in the books 😂 (as far as I know - might have overlooked it 😂)

So if there are SecUnits that are all produced with the same cloned material, they should have the same face, right? Are ALL SecUnits (constructs) built with the same cloned DNA (aside from personalized constructs like the ComfortUnits)? Are there different batches of SecUnits that are produced with other cloned DNA? Could you determine through their faces how old a SecUnit is (when you have the data) because of the used DNA?

Muderbot never commented on other SecUnits faces and we do know that all SecUnits have the same body structure (which is kinda logical if they are mass produced) so we don't really know if other SecUnits have the same face as MB or not. Though we also mostly 'see' SecUnits with their armour on, so we don't know if they actually are different or if Murderbot is just used to looking into its own face when seeing other SecUnits. I'm also not sure/I forgot if we actually have 'seen' Three without armour... Does Three actually look different from Murderbot?

And... HOW OLD is Murderbot actually? Do SecUnits/Constructs age at all? They do have manipulated DNA, we know that, but does that mean they don't age like humans? What about older/newer constructs? How different are they from Murderbot (speaking in terms of abilities/functions/etc.)?

I'd guess older SecUnits are upgraded during their stay between contracts if there are new functions integrated in newer models? Or maybe older models just get sent to lower grade contracts and the newer (more expensive?) models get the high grade contracts?

I mean, there are a few hints to some answers to these questions - for example that Murderbot is at least 4 years old bc. the 'killed dozens of people'-incident is more than 30k hours past which at least in human earth terms would be around 3,5 years - plus the months from ASR to NE.

Murderbot also says in ASR that its battery would keep it alive for "hundreds of thousands of hours" so if we invert that and say 'less than a million hours' thats still a max of about 114 years??

And, as I said, I'm not sure if we have a description of Three's appearance in NE (I'm re-reading it right now and we haven't yet met Three and my memory is shit with descriptions and stuff I've only read once 😂) though it probably would be easier if Three and Murderbot DON'T look too much alike. On the other side it would be hilarious if people always mistake them for the other - especially since Three seems to have a personality that's a lot more emotionally stable than Murderbot! (Though that might be of MB's trauma - who knows?)

So yeah, questions, questions, questions 😂😂😂 (and of course that's got nothing to do with Hello World, the fic that started as a Teen Wolf-Murderbot-AU and that my head decided to evolve into a full blown crossover AND I'M NOT EVEN AT THE FUN PARTS YET! ...)

MCU Villains Till Now Ranked from Weakest to Strongest

From Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor to Inter Galactic Forces – Guardians of the Galaxy, there are a number of mighty heroes in the MCU and also some great MCU Villains. However, it’s rarely one of them to save the day, it’s because they simply come up against a collection of equally powerful villains.

The success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe not only relies on the great superheroes but also on the memorable MCU Villains. In the year 2022, we saw some remarkably stronger MCU Villains in MCU Phase 4 like Gorr the God Butcher, Namor, and Scarlet Witch.

CW: Mentions of vomiting/wanting to vomit. Doesn't actually happen.

Author’s comments: I don’t write sick Thor often, because it’s hard for me to imagine him catching normal “human” illnesses, so I’m glad there was a prompt in this set that suited him perfectly! And of course we all love a gloating Loki, with a dash of brotherly banter thrown it. Love their dynamic. 

The slightly transparent image of Loki appeared at Thor's bedside. The snoring demigod did not stir–though snoring didn't come close to describing the sound coming from Thor. The violent, thunderous gasping noise he was making was deafening. 

Using more magic, Loki yanked the pillow out from under Thor's head and made the bed vibrate so harshly that Thor was almost pitched off entirely. The snoring was cut off and Thor began to stir, groaning. 

"If you don't stop shaking the bed, I'm going to vomit all over you." Thor warned, not opening his eyes. 

Knowing how serious that threat was, Loki did stop, grinning nonetheless. "Good morning, dear brother. I was sent to collect you for your day of "Avenging." You missed your morning training and your comrades are concerned. Are you ill? Burning with fever, perhaps? I know of nothing else that should keep you in bed."

"I will not be Avenging today," Thor groaned. "I am indeed ill. Tell the others to proceed without me."

Loki lounged in the doorway. "I can't imagine how you became unwell so suddenly. You seemed perfectly fine yesterday when you went with Stark and Barton to that festival. Such an odd name…Oktoberfest, wasn't it?"

Thor moaned, wrapping his arms around his middle. "Please don't bring that up."

"What's wrong, brother? Did you not enjoy yourself?"

Thor simply covered his head with his pillow. "Leave, Loki."

"Ah, then you must've enjoyed yourself too much," Loki chuckled. "I should've known from what I heard when you all returned last night. Some things never change. Though I'm amazed you got yourself in this state with Midgardian ale of all things. I would've believed Asgardian spirits were stronger."

Thor uncovered his face to glare at his brother. "It's because Midgardian ale is so poor that I'm in this state. The subpar ingredients have clearly affected me."

"Indeed," Loki said, with an air of agreeing for the sake of pacifying. "However, I wonder if the others will accept that excuse. Stark and Barton are downstairs eating breakfast and having a grand time as always. Eggs and sausage and I believe waffles. Lots of butter and syrup. The ale doesn't seem to have affected them."

When Loki began to speak about food, Thor went very green and wrapped his arms tighter around his stomach. Still, he managed to scoff. "They're used to the Midgard swill we were drinking. I am not. That is all the excuse they shall get."

"I was sent to get you out of bed and I'm not keen to fail my mission. Perhaps I should bring the Hulk up here if you need further convincing," teased Loki.

"Banner wouldn't dare," Thor grumbled, unconcerned. "Now get out. I would throw something if it weren't going to pass right through you. Your every word is a bolt of lightning to my skull, and I feel I may need to acquaint my face with the toilet very soon. I would prefer you not be present when I do." As clammy as he looked, Loki knew he was deadly serious. 

Loki's smile wavered, whether from distaste at the prospect of seeing his brother be ill or concern for him, it was hard to be sure. He took a reflexive step back. "Fine. I'll go. What should I say?"

"Tell the others whatever you wish. I'm beyond caring," mumbled Thor, curling in on himself further. "As long as they know not to expect me today."

"Alright. As you say. I have no sympathy for you, since your misery is self-inflicted, but all the same… I wish you health, because you're an ass when you're ill. Feel better soon."

Before Thor could think of a reply, Loki's image blinked out of the room.

Thor: Love and Thunder 

I enjoyed Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, but what he did that really impressed me what Jojo Rabbit. Now after a few years of writing, directing, acting and producing several films and TV shows, he is returning to the MCU. New Thor flick opens July 8.

Nope 

A Jordan Peele movie is now becoming a big event! Since his debut Get Out, he has been firing on all cylinders. His mysterious new one opens July 22!

The Video Archives Podcast 

Former Video Archives clerks Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary are sort of returning to where they both worked in the 80s. After the store closed in the 90s, QT acquired the entire Video Archives inventory. In this new podcast, the Oscar-winning screenwriters review a movie from that inventory on VHS and discuss it each episode. I am so there! Podcast premieres July 19!

TV:

Better Call Saul (AMC)

In April, season 6 of my #1 TV Show of 2020 premiered. Since this is the final season, they split the season in two and the second half returns on July 11. Let me just say right now, I am going to be so sad when this series ends on Aug. 15 and it then becomes Breaking Bad (in story chronology that is)!

After the bands on Fri. and Sat. there will be midnight screenings of Wayne’s World and Wayne’s World 2 at Somerville Theatre as part of the fest! Nice, a Fest is July 28-30!

MCOC Wishlist Blog Character Spotlight KNULL

BACKGROUND

Knull is an ancient malevolent deity whose existence predates the universe itself, and was originally content to drift through the endless abyss that existed before time.

He used his weapon, the Necrosword, to combat the Celestials who disturbed his darkness. With this sword Knull severed the head of a Celestial. That head is now Knowhere, a popularly-known Marvel location and a battle zone in the Marvel Contest of Champions Battlerealm.

Wanting an army, Knull then constructed the aliens we all know, love, and sometimes hate, the Klyntar race of gooey symbiotic aliens.¹ Later, after a debacle with the Mighty Thor, the symbiotes rebelled against their “God” and trapped him on a desolate planet, later known as Klyntar. There the God of Symbiotes waits and plans his escape, hoping to one day lay waste and bring Darkness to the universe.

“The End is near. God is coming….”  

Editor’s note: the next several sections are designed to familiarize the reader with Knull’s worthiness to be featured in a video game, compared with the myriad other Marvel characters from whom Kabam could choose.

POPULARITY

Technically, Knull has been around since 2013, and appeared in Thor: God of Thunder Vol.1 #6 by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic, as he was a shadowed figure from whom Gorr the God Butcher steals All-Black the Necrosword.

He was then revealed by name by his creators in Venom Vol. 4 #3 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman in 2018. 

Knull has had huge fan buzz around him since his inception and his name is only getting bigger. Despite fewer than a dozen appearances initially, Knull headlined the King in Black line-wide event that began in December 2020, from the minds of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. 

Editor’s note: Arguably named after Knull, the King in Black initial release was considered critically to be a high-stakes situation, due to the perceived hype. Its comics made regular appearances in bestseller lists after the event launched, suggesting the Knull name and story, in conjunction with the strength of his creators’ reputations, was strong enough to sell books. Overall the King in Black arc has also gotten good critical reviews. 

KNULL AS MATERIAL FOR OUR MARVEL GAME

Editor’s note: these character spotlights usually explore several factors to determine whether it is reasonable to expect Kabam to seriously consider the character as a candidate for addition to Marvel Contest of Champions. Among these factors are inclusion in other similarly-marketed games, mainstreaming in comics and other media, mentions in MCOC lore, Kabam conversation, or community rumors, and pure hype among summoners.

OTHER MARVEL GAMES

Knull has been featured in other games already: first in the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile app,² then in Marvel Future Fight. In Marvel Puzzle Quest, Knull was originally only part of the backstory description of the playable Prophet Carnage character, but was eventually released in his own right in May 2021.

KNULL AND THE BATTLEREALM

Arguably no direct mention of Knull has happened in either [Marvel Contest of Champions or Marvel Realm of Champions], but it can be said he was alluded to in the motion comic that accompanied the release of Cosmic Ghost Rider and Red Goblin in October 2020.

Then, when story mode Act 7 was released in December 2020, this dialogue was revealed, which has been strongly speculated to be a reference to Knull.

CLAIM TO FAME: KNULL IN OTHER MEDIA

Knull has not enjoyed a reference in any Marvel Cinematic Universe content to date. Hel has only been mentioned in the Disney XD cartoon Spider-Man: Maximum Venom with a retelling loosely based on his comic book origins. 

UNIQUE WAYS KNULL COULD FIT INTO THE MCOC META

Knull could be a massive boost (editor’s note: synergy hub) to many Symbiote champions or champions in general. I see him as a Cosmic [based on what I was told by co-creator Ryan Stegman], with massive damage. Being the creator of symbiotes, Knull could outfit any [non-#Symbiote] champ with a “Klyntar symbiote” of their own to enhance their kit or base numbers. He could also operate with #Symbiote champs similarly to the way Apocalypse enhances Mutant champs. He could also work as a counter to Symbiotes or anyone who would have ever been bonded to a Klyntar before in canon, which would include most of the Spider-Fam!

Knull’s kit could alternately introduce a #Codex tag to add to certain non-#Spiderverse Hero champs who have famously bonded to symbiotes (paging Red Hulk or even Deadpool).³

A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN?

No mention of Knull ever came out of the Kabam team or anyone related to MCOC. Then again, Kabam never likes to tease big-name additions like Knull would be. Mid-September 2021, one data miner claimed that Knull is forthcoming.

WHAT DO SUMMONERS THINK?

Summoners seem to dig Knull. He was the winner of the first Tournament  of Battlerealm Future, March Addness 2020, which was co-hosted by MCOC Wishlist creator Other MCOC Gabe and Unofficial MCOC Podcast veteran UMCOC Deacon on Twitter. The tournament pitted hundreds of characters against one another for votes from Summoners expressing who they would prefer to enter Marvel Contest of Champions. He cleaned house throughout most of the tournament, earning his addition to the MCOC Wishlist, where he has risen into the top 50 most wanted champions.

Due to recent ramblings by the author, and the introduction of Red Goblin to Marvel Contest of Champions, people have warmed up to the idea that Knull might actually be coming to the contest. (Even community-renowned comics expert CTMCOC agrees!)

Once below rank 250 on the MCOC Wishlist, Knull now stands as the #31 most-wanted champ, with over 550 Summoner upvotes as of this writing. 

KNULL: CHAMPION BUILD IDEAS

PROBABLE CLASS

As mentioned above, Knull is a canonically cosmic entity or deity who purports to predate the universe itself. This forms a strong case for the MCOC Cosmic class of champions.

POSSIBLE ABILITIES

Like many Cosmic champs’ builds, I can see his relying on many Active Buffs with massive damage and defensive potential due to Symbiotic Armor. Perhaps as Knull collects Codices, he gets stronger and this mechanic could be used in game as persistent charges. The more Codices he gathers, the more potent his Buffs could become. He could utilize Fury, Aptitude, Armor, Cruelty, Precision, and other critical-damage-enhancing Buffs. Bleed and Armor Break Debuffs are likely as Knull breaks down his enemies with bloodthirsty ferocity.

POSSIBLE SYNERGIES

Knull's status as the God of the Klyntar could enhance all #Symbiote champions just as Apocalypse does for Mutants.

Venom could get a unique synergy called “Daddy Issues,” allowing Venom a 2% attack boost for every Buff converted on his sp2 but as passive Fury stacks. I imagine Carnage with something like a “Prophet of Knull” Synergy allowing 95% resistance to incinerate effects, allowing him to heal from Incinerates, since Carnage has no weakness to fire when he is operating as Knull’s prophet in the comics.

Knull could also be built to spend Persistent Charges to enhance #Symbiote champions in order to increase their stats and enhance their buffs.

It would also be clever to have a Synergy with Void called “Knull and Void” allowing Void access to a non-stacking Armor Break Debuff, such as on his Heavy Attack. More debuffs for Void would be devastating. 

Knull could also enjoy a basic “Enemies” synergy with Thor and Silver Surfer. A great champ to release in conjunction with Knull would be Gorr the God-Butcher, a notable Thor villain, played by Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder, and the other best-known wielder of All-Black the Necrosword.

Anyone tracking the conversation about future champs knows that the name of Knull comes up frequently among Summoners, and his rise in every voting event in the community tends to support the notion he is greatly demanded by Summoners and would make an excellent addition to the game.

Sigyn and Frigga sat a while, practicing illusions in the firelight. Sigyn was fine with the projection side of illusions, certainly - after learning from Loki and Frigga for so many years, she could conjure the shapes of animals or people at will. But recreating such shapes wasn’t necessarily a talent, as it was for Loki, and it required constant effort.

Her specialty was the cloaking illusions she let dance between her fingers as they talked. Self-concealment fascinated her - after all, she’d rather avoid conflict than not, and being invisible helped that end - but it too required intense concentration. Strength and raw energy that she simply couldn’t sustain for long enough to venture to the dungeons and back without being detected.

That was why, when Frigga eventually led her to the library, Sigyn’s pulse quickened when the queen pulled a dusty old book from a shelf. 

“History can teach us many things, Sigyn,” Frigga had said. “Including how to move forward.”

Frigga had retired to her chambers, now. But Sigyn sat wide awake, cross-legged in the floor of her own room, flipping through the old book. Inside, a collection of the Asgardian's magical artifacts. Andvaranaut and draupnir, the magical rings.

She continued searching the pages.

Ah, Sigyn stopped, Freya's feather-dress.

Sigyn knew its power well. Years ago, Loki had used it.

He made a beautiful hawk. She mused, flipping the pages again.

Megingjörð - Thor's belt, which doubled his strength.

She closed the book, shaking her head with a smile. Frigga was brilliant. Objects, weapons, even clothing could be imbued with magical properties and hold onto those properties without having to constantly hold a spell. Of course, the tradeoff was more effort required up front - for a spell to last, it had to be potent. 

But I can do it. With the right spell, I can fashion my own magical cloak.

Hours later, Sigyn had nearly succumbed to the frustration.

Books lay strewn about. Old cloaks and scraps of whatever fabric she could find lay ruined on the floor. Exhaustion had already crept in, the light outside having long gone - though it was so late, it may soon return.

One last try. Sigyn laid out an old black cloak, one she had brought with her when she first came to the palace. Casting a spell, she held the energy in her hands. It flickered. She groaned, pushing it to become brighter. Constant.

This is for Loki. Do it for him.

She muttered an incantation to herself, pressing her hands to the cloak. Burning light crept over it like fluid. It glittered, writhed, and burned. 

Do it for him.

She kept her hands against it, chanting through gritted teeth.

The cloak glowed, magic illuminating the room, Sigyn straining out a groan as she pushed-

Then the magic faded. She pulled away, gasping for breath. Her palms felt clammy and she sat a moment, trembling, her vision spotty.

Please let it work, please, please..

She caught her breath then stood, shakily, pulling the cloak on.

Please, please, please..

She stepped in front of a mirror. Pulled the hood up. Her image muted into a soft blur, then disappeared entirely. She removed the hood and saw herself again.

Slowly raised the hood.

Disappeared.

"Yes!" She squealed, then immediately snapped her hands over her mouth.

"Princess, are you well?" The guard outside called to her.

"Fine - fine, thank you," Sigyn quickly stuffed the cloaks away, closed the books, then collapsed on the bed. It felt more welcome now, more promising. She smiled into the covers, exhausted.

Tomorrow morning I'll visit him.

Sigyn arose the next day - albeit later than she'd hoped - pulled on the cloak, and headed for the dungeons.

I have to be deliberate, she thought to herself, walking quietly, I can't go straight there. I have to make it look like I'm doing something else...

She pursed her lips.

I'm just going for a walk. Who wouldn't walk on such a fine morning as this?

Sigyn smirked to herself, making her way to the outermost reaches of the palace.

She wandered there a while, until...

"Sigyn!" Thor's voice.

Sigyn wheeled around, searching for him. "What? Thor-" She stopped. Blinked.

Thor was there with a young woman.

A young woman Sigyn had never seen before.

A young woman who stared at her.

"Who's that?" She asked, looking Sigyn up and down.

Sigyn tilted her head, walking up to the stranger. She was about the same height as Sigyn, wearing a loose brown and blue Asgardian dress and even some small pieces of jewelry. But from her shocked expression and slightly stiff mannerisms, she didn’t feel Asgardian.

Thor chuckled. "Jane, this is Sigyn. My sister."

"Jane- The mortal? You're from Midgard?"

Jane nodded. "Hi. Yeah, I am.."

Sigyn's face lit up. "Oh, really? Thor's spoken of you! I wondered how long he would keep you to himself," Sigyn grinned as Jane smiled, looking both surprised and amused, "Such a selfish thing. Shame on you, brother!"

The thunder god smirked, glancing at Jane. "She jests."

Sigyn conceded. “What brings you to Asgard?”

“Heimdall was unable to see her. I’ve brought her here for safekeeping,” Thor explained, though he seemed to be holding something back…

“I see.” Sigyn turned back to Jane. "Well, I do miss Midgard. We used to visit - has it changed much since then?"

Thor nodded. "Indeed."

“Since when?” Jane glanced between them.

Thor shifted his weight, considering the question. “A few centuries, at least?”

"Oh. Yeah. It’s probably a little bit different now," Jane agreed, composing herself, "Wait, so. Each of you have a specific ability, don't you? Thor controls thunder, you control..?"

Sigyn sighed. "I'm afraid I don't control much of anything, not like Thor does. I'm the goddess of fidelity."

Jane didn't respond.

"I'm loyal."

"Oh."

"Yes," Sigyn straightened up, "Fidelity and compassion. To put it in the simplest of terms... I'm nice. Or, I try to be."

Jane giggled. "Well, it's great to meet you," she held out a hand, then caught herself. "Oh, sorry, you probably don't do that here.."

"No, please," Sigyn extended her hand, smiling. "Teach me."

The mortal looked surprised. "Well.. When people - humans - greet each other, we shake hands. So you take my hand, and I take yours, and you just.. Shake it." Jane shook Sigyn's hand.

"What a wonderful greeting. Hello, Jane of Midgard," She giggled, still shaking until Jane let go.

"Hello to you too, Sigyn of Asgard." Jane smiled.

Soon, Sigyn said farewell to Jane and Thor. Thor was, no doubt, showing her his favorite places - many of which were outside the palace. Just what I need. She’ll keep Thor occupied a while... Meandering through an empty part of the palace, Sigyn pulled up the hood of her cloak.

I'm coming, my love. I'll see you very soon.

She carefully made her way down to the dungeons. Each step took her deeper underground, the air turning cold and damp.

Mustering up her strength, she cast a spell over one of the guards and he took a deep breath, blinking slowly, then opened the door to the main dungeon. She slipped in past him. Then he blinked again, looking around, his brow furrowed. He soon left, closing the door.

Sigyn’s heartbeat pounded as she walked, silently, to Loki's cell. Two guards stood watch. Another spell, and their gazes also went unfocused, both of them leaving the dungeon. Now, the only ones in the dungeon were prisoners - and her.

She breathed heavier, her strength waning.

I must get better at spells..

But as she looked up into the cell, spells were the last of her concern.

What If...? - Season 1 (2021) Review

In memory of Chadwick Boseman. No matter how inconsequential this show may be to the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, it is still a necessary watch for witnessing Boseman’s final acting work (in voice form). A true legend that left too soon.

Plot:  Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.

“I am the Watcher. I am your guide through these vast new realities. Follow me, and dare to face the unknown, and ponder the question: what if?” Say what you will but Jeffrey Wright has one soothing and powerful voice! He may be not as signature as Morgan Freeman but I would surely love for Wright to read bedtime stories to my future kids. Not in a weird way though. That being said, what is weird though is how Wright acts in this What If...? show, perving on folks from various realities and spying at them in secret from afar! You know what this type of behaviour reminds me of? Hotel surveillance! Hidden cameras in lamps and clocks, filming poor unaware visitors whilst they lay in bed naked and doing what naked people in bed do. What I’m saying is, it may not be covered in the show, but Wright’s Watcher definitely spent some of his time staring at people in hotel rooms, watching them like the old dirty man that he is! Look, I think this controversial element of the character needs to be discussed more so I’m bringing it to the table.

What If...? is the MCU’s first step into animation territory, which for the narrative purpose of the show makes sense, as the entire plot is based around different hypotheticals on how certain events in the MCU’s past could have gone down differently, and with all the big ideas and set pieces that are thrown about, it would have been super expensive to recreate all of it in CGI and live action. Even Disney couldn’t afford that much! Not for one single show at least. And the animation here, though nothing special, is generally well done, though it does get some time getting used to. Especially seeing the animated versions of characters we’re so used to seeing in live-action, with some transferred really well whilst others not so much. 

The show’s format is that of an anthology, for the most part at least. For those who may not know what that means, an anthology refers to a collection of stories that are put together but are not connected narratively, though do share common themes. The best example of this would be Black Mirror, where each individual episode has it’s own story and characters, however the show overall tackles the idea of how technology manipulates our lives. With What If...? it’s the same, and as such it can be difficult reviewing this show as a whole, since each individual episode is different. That does mean in quality too, as What If...? is one of the best example of the term ‘hit and miss’. There are some great episodes, including episode 2 that gives a scenario where what if Boseman’s T’Challa became Star-Lord instead of Black Panther, and Boseman’s natural charm and charisma carries that episode, but also it’s interesting seeing the repercussions of this one change, including the fact that T’Challa is such a great diplomat that he managed to change Thanos’ opinion on destroying half of the universe. Basically makes a point that Peter Quill was absolutely useless! Or the dark levels of episode 4, where Dr. Strange, driven by an obsession to save Christine Palmer’s life, goes way overboard and abuses time travel and magic to the point that reality collapses upon itself and all that remains is a guilt-ridden sorcerer left with nothing but consequences. It’s an emotionally heavy episode and one that really leaves an impact afterward. There’s also an amusing throwaway episode where Thor throws a party on Earth and then like a child tries to hide all the evidence when he hears his mother’s is coming home, and though there wasn’t much meaning to it, it just emphasised how much I enjoy Chris Hemsworth in the role of Thor (he returns to voice the character) and I cannot wait for more shenanigans in Thor: Love & Thunder. But for these good episodes there are also strong misfires. The show’s first episode present us with Captain Carter, where what if Agent Carter took the Cap mantle instead of Steve Rogers, and though I liked the character, the episode came off quite dull as it was generally a note-for-note rehash of events from Captain America: The First Avenger. There’s also a zombies episode which, even though is based on a comic, I felt just existed cause zombies are currently classed as cool. But it felt pointless and forced. Also typically to Marvel where at the end of the day everything has to be connected, the end of the season ends up taking these anthology stories and whacking them all together, and though it was fun to watch in the moment, looking back I realise it was just another cheap gimmick to assemble yet another new superhero team up. Marvel doesn’t tend to understand the meaning of ‘standalone’. 

What If...? is very much for hardcore fans of the MCU. If you loved the films and the characters, it’s enjoyable seeing these new whacky storylines, and nice hearing some MCU actors return for some fun voice work, but overall this is fairly inconsequential TV viewing, one that I don’t see myself pondering over as much as the Watcher.

Sifki Week 2020 August 16th-22nd

Hello fellow Sifki shippers! The Loki series is just around the corner and there are positive signs that Sif will make an appearance in Love and Thunder.  So why not drum up some excitement for another opportunity to spend time with our favorite space vikings!

How does it work? Each day of the week will come along with a general prompt to give you inspiration for your work. You can follow the prompt as loosely or closely, as literal or abstract as you want; prompts are mainly there to give you a starting point to create from. Or you can completely ignore the prompts if you don’t feel particularly inspired but have your own great idea. You can also submit for as many or as few days as you’d like, and creations can be any length or size. We want to see as much new fan work in the fandom as possible, so don’t feel limited.The schedule for this year’s celebration is as follows:

Day 1 (Sunday August 16th) - Indulge: Someone over does it on their wine. Maybe one has a guilty pleasure or a secret wish that the other indulges. What pleasure do they allow themselves?

Day 2 (Monday August 17th)  - Haunted: Are their regrets that plague them? Maybe they goad the other into a haunted house. Maybe their ghosts are are quite literal.   

Day 3 (Tuesday August 18th) - Reunion: The act of coming together after time apart. Who is the first to say sorry after an argument? Maybe Loki drags Sif to his high school reunion, or she takes him to her family reunion.

Day 4 (Wednesday August 19th) - Challenge: Do they challenge each other in the training ring or in the bedroom? What does power mean to gods? Do they face a beast together or come to the other’s rescue? 

Day 5 (Thursday August 20th) - Matchmaker: Maybe Asgard has customs and traditions for choosing a royal spouse. What if Loki and Sif are the ones trying to set their friends up. Perhaps Thor can’t mind his own business :) 

Day 6 (Friday August 21st) -  Future or Fix-It Friday: What will these upcoming projects look like, how might Sif show back up in Love and Thunder? Where will the Loki show take us? Sooo Infinity War didn’t bring much comfort to our ship...Change that! How would you re-write or diverge from canon? What stays and what gets a makeover? Indulge your great ideas and make things better (or worse)! 

Day 7 (Saturday August 22nd) - AU: Rival Spies? Vampires? Pirates? Robots? Ghost Hunters? Any and all Alternate Universes, cross-overs, fusions, and tropes are your inspiration!

What’s acceptable?

Fics, Artwork, Graphics, Manips, Gisfsets, Videos, Playlists, Moodboards, Aesthetics, Headcanons, and pretty much anything else!

Basically anything creative you want to contribute, there’s no restriction on what type of content you can create.
