Ship It

What made you ship it?

I think it was their interactions in the AoU opening battle, where we can see that they've been working together between movies discovering and practicing hammer/shield combo moves. I just really like the image of Steve getting to roughhouse and play around in a physical way like that.

Also the Steve/Thor porn on AO3 is really nice. Hot, but usually very wholesome and respectful of both characters. (Thundershield rec list coming soon)

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Just in general there's a nice sense of camaraderie between them, and I enjoy their mix of similarities and differences. They share that honorable warrior spirit and a joyful physicality, but Steve is thoughtful, reserved, and a little prickly where Thor is impulsive, outgoing and laid-back.

I also like the idea of them together after IW, when they both have the experience of losing their entire worlds. I headcanon that Steve (and most of the Avengers) reached out to Thor post-IW to try to offer comfort and fellowship, but he wasn't in a place to hear it.

And purely on a physical level I like big, kind hunks and Thundershield has two of them so it's a big win for me.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

This seems unpopular from what I've read on AO3, but I really like Thor bottoming in Thundershield. I generally prefer my ships to be built like a human pyramid, with the bigger and more muscular characters on the bottom, but with two beefcake ships they can take turns. And top Steve/bottom Thor is a really uncommon dynamic.

Thinking thoughts this fine morning about Loki transforming into Steve because he knows how Thor feels about him.

He likes tormenting his brother a bit and teasing him about his little crush. Cause c’mon, really? Stars and Stripes? THAT’S what gets Thor going?? How could Loki NOT tease him!

Also I feel Loki secretly likes the Captain America uniform and will use any opportunity to wear it.

they are both strong, tall, blonde, have weapons that are a greater representation of their beliefs and legacy, both distinctly are outsiders™, both very righteous and deeply protective of their nerdy brunette significant other.

Thinking about Thor getting a little talking to from the rest of the team once it becomes clear that he and Steve are dating. Not a shovel talk, per se (though Natasha does choose to say her piece while practising her knife throwing...), just a gentle reminder that Steve's from a different time and that Thor shouldn't be put out if he needs time to work up to intimacy or public displays of affection with another man. Just be prepared to be gentle and patient with the guy if he needs it, they tell him. He'll be ready when he's ready.

And with every one of these chats, Thor's trying not to piss himself laughing because he doesn't have the heart to tell them that Steve would climb him like a tree on an hourly basis if he had his way and regularly has to be talked down from risking a public act of indecency charge or scandalising their friends around the tower.

Bonus points if Bucky gives Thor a once over the first time they meet and reads Steve for filth like "yeah, you look like the type to keep up with that horndog."

thundershield (steve x thor) headcanons:

- thor enjoys watching steve paint, even if he gets a little impatient waiting to see the final result

- steve loves to rest his fingers on the dips in thor’s hips, especially when they dance

- the two have practically adopted the maximoff twins,

- the two are constantly inviting Loki and Bucky on double dates, despite the fact that bucky and loki aren’t even dating yet.

- both are the best wingmen for their besties

- steve helps thor come to terms with forgiving his brother

- steve tries to get flowers for thor every weekend, the florist even knowing steve by name despite having no idea who captain america is

There is a line in a classic Avengers Tower fic that I always remember when I think of ThunderShield: “Thor/Steve porn is surprisingly sweet and wholesome.”

Steve sometimes finds it hard to keep track of time/keep a reasonable sleep schedule because he needs so little sleep (not just like he needs a few hours a day, but he only needs a few hours every two or three days). 

So the need to sleep just kind of catches him off guard, and he sort of falls asleep in random places. Just kind of nods off wherever.

And his strong lover/s (or friends) carry him to bed.

What he does mind is having to marry the prince of the neighboring kingdom of Midgard. He doesn't need a spouse to run his country, and he isn't ready to settle down.

Steve really would just like love, a family maybe, and to not be stuck watching his newly married brother mooning over his new husband. And he'd rather be painting anyway, so an arranged marriage is not the worst idea. What Steve doesn't want is to be married to the strange almost barbaric King, who shows up spectacularly hungover to their wedding. Now he's alone, and scared in a place miles from anything he is used to, saddled to a King who doesn't want him.

But maybe, maybe all hope is not lost, even with the disaster their wedding turns into. Maybe, just maybe, there is something to be salvaged from the less than ideal circumstances that brought them together.
