💙So, how we ended up in the resort...💙 I lost some weight and my mum saw a photo, immediately called me up crying and told us that she & my dad had booked us into a beautiful hotel to give me a relaxing place to chill out and get some much needed rest... The full story below... - So after only 1 month of our time in India I fell ill and started to rapidly lose weight! After 3 visits, overnight stays in local hospitals and still no cure I had lost 20kg and my weight was around 65kg! I struggled to keep any of the food I was forcing myself to eat in my stomach and had very little energy (which is very unlike me)! After trying many different medications, the last resort before flying home came to us in the form of a chance meeting with a Tibetan doctor who promised that through herbal Tibetan medicine I could be cured within 15 days! 15 days later having just arrived in Vietnam the Medicine had did just as the doctor had promised and restored my ability to eat and keep food in my stomach which enabled me to slowly regain my energy! The next 3 months were spent eating as much Vietnamese food as I could find (luckily this was one of our favourite cuisines) and putting on all of the weight I had lost and a little extra for good measure! Regaining my strength was a long and hard journey but it was a journey that I learned a huge amount from including my limits and how far I can push myself. - To this day I’m still not sure what I had, some said it was dengue fever, some said a parasite but whatever it was I was stronger than it and managed to beat it! - The second last photo was the photo my mum saw that set her off and the last photo was a comparison to three months later. - - - - - - #india #skinny #tooskinny #denguefever #dengue #ill #skinnyman #travel #delhibelly #weightlossjourney #strength #limits #parasite #skeleton #journey #doctor #tibetanmedicine #tibet #illinindia #travelbug (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_5KC7JpSMg/?igshid=14u0arc3tvodv

This week, I have the pleasure of speaking with a friend, classmate, Tibetan medical practitioner, and fellow author, EzDean Fassassi. We touched on a wide variety of things in the episode - fad diets, parenting, how he got interested in and studied the esoteric art he now practices for a living (taking him halfway around the world to the mountains of Tibet and consuming multiple years of his life), how he as well as how he wrote a book about it and created its audiobook. Check out his IG profile @holistichealthconsult to learn more! Check out the show notes for more details and to listen to the whole episode of The Thirteenth Hour (214) directly. It’s also available on Spotify, iTunes, Stitcher, Googleplay, Podcoin, and Tunein, all now easily accessible by clicking on the linktree bio in @the13thhr.ost.

When we fall ill we take whatever measures we can to help us recover. When we are unwell we not only feel miserable, but our ability to function normally is impaired. Consequently health is not a matter of merely personal interest, but a universal concern for which we all share some responsibility. ~ H.H. the Dalai Lama Tibetan medicine is a science, art and philosophy that provides a holistic approach to health care. It is a science because its principles are enumerated in a systematic and logical framework based on an understanding of the body and its relationship to the environment. It is an art because it uses diagnostic techniques based on the creativity, insight, subtlety and compassion of the medical practitioner. And it is a philosophy because it embraces the key Buddhist principles of altruism, karma and ethics.

https://archive.org/download/podcast214_201909/Podcast%20214.mp3
This week, I have the pleasure of speaking with a friend and classmate, EzDean Fassassi, who has a great story about how he came to be where he is now, an author and an owner of a Tibetan medical practice.  We had a great conversation about fad diets, parenting, how he got interested in and studied the esoteric art he now practices for a living (taking him halfway around the world and consuming multiple years of his life) as well as how he wrote the book below.  And if you ever thought about making your own audiobook, like he did, keep listening for his thoughts in the latter part of the episode.
Check out a few clips below of EzDean discussing some things he discusses in his practice:

Cooking in Tibet: Main Ingredients
Tibet, located more than 3,600 metres above sea level, unsurprisingly has quite harsh climates, which renders growing many crops near impossible. However, there are still some plants that are able to withstand the severe conditions of the Tibetan Plateau.
Tsampa, a type of flour made of a variety of barley called Nay is a staple in most Tibetan households, and is more common than wheat. Rice, perhaps due to the aridness of the Tibetan Plateau, has to be imported. The main vegetables that are cultivated on the plateau include root vegetables such as turnips, and potatoes. Radishes, asparagus, peas, onions and a various different types of mushrooms are also featured heavily in Tibetan cooking. Due to the colder climate, people on the plateau grow fruits such as pears, peaches, apricots, apples, and berries. Traditionally, Tibetans do not eat dessert or snacks; these are only served on special occasions, or when there are guests.
Contrary to the popular belief, not all Tibetans are vegetarian. Due to limited resources of fruit and vegetables, Tibetans eat mutton, pork, beef and yak. Hinduist Tibetans, however, do not eat beef, as cows are considered holy animals. Traditionally, Tibetans would stick to eating the meat of larger animals, as it means that they would have to take fewer lives for their meals. Hence, Tibetans traditionally do not eat fish, as they are small animals, and many fish would have to be killed for a meal for many people (yowangdu.com, 2012). Tibetans rely heavily on the yak (female: dri) for their meat, fur, milk, and labour. Milk can be turned into other dairy products, such as butter and cheese— high energy foods much needed in order to keep the body warm in the cold climate. The yak’s droppings can also be used as fertiliser and, once dried, used as fuel.
Common condiments used in cooking include soy sauce, crushed ginger and garlic. During the holy month of Vaisakha (April to May), however, people are not allowed to consume garlic, as it is considered disrespectful to go to a place of worship with bad (garlic) breath. People also do not eat meat during the holy month of Sagadawa, which starts around the first week of May and lasts for approximately one month (Manjupuria, 1980).
Many herbs used in Tibetan food are also used in Tibetan traditional medicine. Though some cures are rooted in superstitious beliefs rather than facts, some medicines that cure diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and epilepsy do work quite well. Herbs are usually ground and then mixed with ground minerals and various animal parts such as the horns of bulls, mountain goats, and rhinoceroses, and the shells of snails, to name a few. The grounded mixture is then formed into different coloured pills.
