yo, Okey so I wanna make a comic.... but I have never ever made a comic before. I mostly want to make a comic because it looks fun to have longer art projects to work on over time. Anyway I have no idea how to write a story( and I’m also scared that making a comic will be too hard). What should I do :0 how do I start, how much prep on the story should I have before starting drawing?? Thanks!!( and btw I always love it when you do small comics!! Your art is really an inspiration to me OwO)

okay, first, omg thank you very much you have succeeded on melting my heart into a mush 😭

and second, I’m hardly someone who should give others advice since I’m not a professional yet wwwwww but anyway I’ll try my best

1. Plan you ending

yes, do plan your ending first before you start to write anything complex. it gives you an anchor and sense of direction when writing the plot and problems. it doesn’t have to be overly detailed

2. Do write the script form start to finish, plan the arcs

this is important in doing a long story. write out your general plot first. write your main conflict and problems.

then you can start to divide it into tinier plots if you wish to by planning little arcs and bridge them nicely. it would prevent you to stray from your original plot.

to start a serious comic, you must have at least planned all the major plots and the ending, and also already have a structured outline on how much arcs and sub-plot it would have. if not, you’re most likely going to stray and would find trouble with the pacing. Give an arc a hint or a revelation on the main plot and keep them relevant. unless you wanna make a small detour to let you characters breathe from the conflict

you don’t have to plan an over-complicated plot, just the simple introduction, mystery, action, conflict, and conclusion will do. The main point is that you know where your story is going to, and you know how it would reach the finish line

those two are what you should prepare before drawing. now, to the extra advice:

3. Because it’s a comic, make your characters distinguishable

not just for their hair and eye color, but also eye shape, facial features, body shape, etc. Make their expression unique for each of them. Know your character and translate their traits into body language. I usually do this by drawing those facial expressions meme with the same character over and over again.

for example, Soul’s contented smile would differ from Black Star’s contented smile. Bakugo’s surprised face is different from Deku’s surprised face, and of course, even if you switch their hairstyle and eye colors, they’re still distinguishable because they have different facial features

4. Make your characters human, including the antagonists

don’t make them two-dimensional. give them flaw, make them relatable. make us understand why they do what they’re doing even though we don’t agree with their decision and behavior.

You don’t have to like your character as a human, but do give them both good and bad points. there are no real villains and heroes in a good story, just deeply flawed human beings.

5. Growth

this is also important. identify the main issues of your character, and make sure they have changed at the end of your story. it doesn’t have to be a positive growth, but make them change, especially emotionally

write how your characters are at the start of the series, and compare to how they would be at the end

this also applies to character interactions. friendships and familial bonds grow over time, you have to remember that it’s not only romantic and antagonistic relationships that are changing

6. World building

if your story would be set in an epic fantasy or otherworldly concept, then don’t give your readers info dump

introduce your setting slowly, only tell what’s important. and bc it’s a comic, use the background, use the people, use your art style to introduce your world.

we can take A:TLA for example, we don’t see them dumping worldbuilding things and history shit on the first episode. we just see there’s bendings, there’s the avatar, and it is set in a medievalish age. We would naturally see further into the world concept as the character travels around

7. REFERENCES AND BETA READERS

this is pivotal. watch and read many comic/webcomic and focus on their storytelling and art.

also give your first draft to a beta. ask them how your pacing is, how your story is, is there a plot hole, etc. and don’t be afraid, first drafts are bound to change and evolve! don’t be too harsh on yourself if your first attempt is not to your standard!

that’s it I guess?

anyway I’m just writing what I’ve been doing I’m sorry if my advice just over-complicates things wwww I hope it could help you a bit ><

Yay! We made it another year! (Here's last year's roundup if you want to see that)

To tell you the truth, until I made this I hadn't realised how far I'd come in terms of technique and style. It was also hard to make this because like last year, there's so much i did that shows different parts of my art (like, October's chibi incubi au DOES NOT show how deeply I got into drawing chibis this year, especially on my @ask-the-milgram-prisoners sideblog) There's also a lot of little things I can't really convey, like my favourite art being a Moomin I drew that got so many nice comments <3, it really does mean a lot to me as most people usually reblog or like my art quite silently, and i understand not everyone has the spoons to leave compliments everywhere but... I like it when people say nice things to me... wwwwww

Reading over my 2020 summary makes me realise one big different i hadn't noticed: I finish most of what i start now. Which is quite surprising... I feel like I've improved as an artist, my paintings are a lot more detailed now and while i learned about gradients in late 2020, i think I'm using them more effectively now, to be honest i'm quite excited to see where I'll end up this time next year.

But with good comes bad, whilst i see my art improving, it still takes a while to make (generally at max speed, a painting will require 2-3 days of work, and a comic can take up to a week, a rate i am only able to achieve due to copious free time, as i get older and need to focus more on university or working a job, i imagine my output will be severely limited unless i manage to learn to work faster). Another limitation is fandom, whilst the above summary may give the impression i posted an even rate of Danganronpa to MILGRAM fanart, that is far from the truth. I still like danganronpa, but this year I fell in love with DECO*27's MILGRAM Project on youtube and that really takes up most of my creative imagination now... NBD except for the MILGRAM fandom being almost entirely on twitter (do not worry about me leaving tumblr, twitter is much too hostile for me) so I am currently in an odd state where my art satisfies me, but makes me feel like I'm disappointing my 70-80 followers who joined during my Danganronpa phase... Crap i've rambled way more than last year!

Itaru: Is this the witch's house? Izumi: We arrived in no time. Itaru: Things have been going smoothly so far. Now, should we start exploring the room and look for hints? Izumi: The witches won't find us, right? Hmm, this cupboa-- Witch: What a plump, fat, delicious child you are...Hihihi. Child A: Noooooo! Child B: KYAAAAーーーーー！！ Itaru: ......That's some S-class horror right there. So this is why 'we must keep our mind strong' --- Izumi: ...... Itaru: Director-san, are you bad with horror stuff? Izumi: I am not generally bad with horror but.... bad people are up to no good. Itaru: I see. Don't worry. I'll definitely protect you,  director-san. Izumi: Thanks for saying so but in all honesty, I'm not expecting anything from you. Itaru: Ouch. Though, if you'll think about everything that happened so far, I can't blame you. Anyways, we can't proceed if we don't find a hint or helper characters. Let's look for it more carefully. Izumi: Uhh...... Itaru: Hn? This cage appears to be deliberately covered in cloth--- ???: Ah. Itaru: Helper character has been spawned. Hansel: My name is Hansel. The witch trapped me here. Itaru: I heard you have the hint for solving the mystery. Can you tell me? Hansel: Gretel and I love animals. If you draw me  a picture of a cool animal, I'll give you the hint. Izumi: Animal pictures? Itaru: We don't have much time left to think. It leaves us no choice but to draw something. -- It’s done. What do you think of this tiger? Hansel: What part of your drawing is a tiger? It's barely even passable as a cat. Perhaps, it's a dog with a human's face? Anyway, it looks weak. You suck. Itaru: Keep your mind strong: Part two. Are all escape games like this? Izumi: Then, how about this? Itaru: Director-san, don't tell me you drew a lion curry again. You're as laid-back as ever. Izumi: It's an ordinary lion, you know! Itaru: No, no. That drawing is definitely--- Hansel: Uwah, it's a lion! It's super cool! Itaru Eh? Hansel: Onee-chan is a very good artist! Izumi: I'm glad you liked it! Thank you. Itaru: ...What the hell.

Chikage: Good job. You're late. Banri: Itaru-san. 're you able to show off the man you are this time? Itaru: No, rather than being able to show off how manly I am, I'd say it just backfired. Banri: Ha? Izumi: Ah, seems like both of you have finished writing the review. Chikage: We've been here since a while ago. Itaru: Let's see.. Oh, "too crowded"... ...."Extremely harsh". "The players might feel bad at a worrisome level." Banri: I know you wanna test play the level for experts but 's gonna be pointless if you'll only write this much. Itaru: I'm not just bad-mouthing them. I want them to make further improvements by pointing out specific areas. Well, this is a high-quality review so it's okay. ---Though I only have negative opinions, I can't put it into words very well. Director-san is the only one I can count on when it comes to this. Izumi: Fufu, of course, I'll give them high reviews without being told. I had so much fun this time. It's all thanks to Itaru-san. Itaru: Seriously.

CHOICE 1: "The mysteries were solved perfectly" Izumi: Itaru-san solved the mysteries in the first half perfectly so everything else proceeded smoothly. Itaru: Well, it's the beginner mode plus I wanted to show you something good this time so I did my best. Izumi: I changed my mind about you. Itaru: So was my third-strike revenge successful? Izumi: Fufu, who knows? I can't say for sure.

CHOICE 2: "It's my first time winning" Izumi: It's my first time winning a pair game with Itaru-san. Itaru: Finally, I got to play with director-san till the end. I used to be the first person to withdraw before. Izumi: Let's do our best so we can continue to work this way!

Itaru:  Today's MVP is without a doubt director-san's lion curry. It is the weakest but I'm going to pay respect to this character and never delete it. Izumi: That goes without saying! Rather, did you intend to delete it?! Itaru: Just kidding. Let's play a game together again, director-san.

(T/N:  I swear the way director crushed Itaru xD .wwwwww At least he finally redeemed himself from his previous blunders this time.. )
