Dean gets SO nostalgic for the innocent, curious, moody kid his little brother used to be, he would want to protect him at all cost becoming even more overprotective than his past self and past!Sam would be like: wtf is wrong with you ???

Dean is 24 years old, and a quiet night at a California dive bar turns into a near death experience turns into a trip through time thanks to the stranger he meets in the bar. When he lands in the bunker twenty years into his future, he finds out who the stranger is — and what his relationship is to Dean’s own older self. Dean’s not sure what he thinks about this at first, but when Cas takes him back to his own time (accompanied by the older Dean, who is determined to make sure that nothing they do in the past screws up their lives in the future), he gets to know the angel, and he gets a glimpse at a future he never would’ve dreamed that he might be able to have.

In the cool evening air, Dean looks around. He’d left the Impala back parked at the dingy motel where he’d rented a room, but he’s not quite ready to call it a night. He opens his remaining beer and looks down the street to see if there’s another bar nearby that might be worth checking out, but before he can make a decision he hears the door to the bar he has just left open behind him. And he knows, he just /knows/, that it isn’t some other random patron headed home.

“What the hell is this, huh?” Dean asks, “Something about ‘not interested’ you’re not getting?”

And then the guy says his name.

“Dean,” the man begins, and Dean gets it.

“Oh, lemme guess, my dad tell you to check up on me?” Dean asks. He doesn’t wait for an answer, just begins to walk, knowing the man will follow. He’s a hunter, obviously. Explains the build, and the suit that is only meant to pass muster at a brief glance, like the fake police badge or FBI creds the guy probably carries. Dean should’ve clocked him from the start.

And for some reason John had thought that Dean needed checking up on. That he couldn’t be trusted to go it alone, nevermind the fact that he had finished the hunt his dad had sent him on two whole days ago and had yet to receive any new case coordinates from John.

To Dean’s surprise, he hears a laugh behind him. He stops, and now he does turn to face the guy again.

“No,” the man says. “I’ve lost count of how often I’ve been told I’m bad at following orders, but even if that wasn’t the case, I wouldn’t follow your father’s.”

“Oh yeah? Then how do you know my name?” Dean demands.

“You left your wallet on the bar,” the man replies, holding it up. It’s definitely Dean’s: worn black leather, secondhand from his dad, containing a meager number of bills and at least three fake IDs tucked behind a real one— well, real first name, although it gives his surname as Campbell, just in case.

“Oh,” Dean says, wondering for the second time that night if he has misjudged this guy’s intentions. Maybe he’s just a normal businessman trying to do a good deed for the day and return a lost wallet, despite the wallet’s owner being an absolute weird freak toward him. “Thanks.”

The man offers the wallet out to him, almost gently, like he’s proffering a bit of food to a scared, stray dog, and Dean steps forward to take it. “It’s your birthday,” he says, and before Dean can ask, the man explains, “I saw it on your ID. On one of them, anyway.” Dean nods. “Happy birthday,” the guy says. “I should’ve bought you a beer.”

I think spn fic writers are sleeping on writing time travel fics to the 40s-50s when American Men of Letters were still alive, and exploring Sam and Dean's relationship with Henry, and even meeting Henry's father, and MOL being shocked by the future and by the boys' behavior like Henry was when he traveled to the future, and Sam and Dean hating MOL because of their strict hierarchy and like restricted access to the knowledge depending on your rank, which will INFURIATE Sam... So many unexplored possibilities... Someone write a fic I'm beggin'

Just finished The Last Outpost of All That Is by gekizetsu on ao3. Fantastic fic 10/10 go read it.

And all I can think about is what if they get old and die together in their sleep then wake up 4th of July 1996 as their teenage selves. Sam confessed once years ago that that's when he realised he loved dean. Like in love with dean. Sam figures this is heaven. It's not. Then they have to deal with John and figure out if they want to talk anybody about what's coming.

And they probably think we're crazy anyway, Sammy. What's the point?

The point is maybe we can figure out a way to stop it, dean.

Everyone they meet clocks that the brothers are way too affectionate with each other. But they're like 90 years old in mind and soul they don't give a shit about what the rest of the world thinks. Even John.

The hardest part is how loud the world is again. All those small ingrained behaviours like looking both ways before crossing the road, actually paying attention to road rules, not just taking whatever they need and needing credit cards again is a bitch, take a bit to re learn.

Hunting though. That's like riding a bike. Word catches like fire about john's boys. How ruthless, efficient and down right terrifying they can be. How could they possibly know the things they do? And God help anyone who disrespects one brother in the others earshot. God help any poor bastard that tries to come between them.

Gah im a sucker for a time travel fic. 😩

good spn that lives in my mind dean kills john pre-series and he's faking the whole search to keep sam around but at the same time he's being haunted by john's ghost, seeing him in the backseat of the impala and on hunts and he's losing it but he can't let go. he knows exactly what the tethered object is, but he can't. let. go. and we see him wrestle with this alone for the whole season. and they go back to lawrence and they release mary's ghost. but john's still there, lingering. weighing on dean. and dean's filled with a mixture of guilt and righteousness. that's his dad. but he had to kill him. but part of him is still a little kid. and he can't let go, he can't let go. he thinks maybe, john's choosing to stick around. stick with them, for once. so how can he get rid of him? and so he's wrestling with it, alone. he's the only one who can see john, and slowly dean unpacks his feelings and his anger and his trauma and eventually he accepts that he can't live like this, still under the looming presence of his father. so then we finally see him take off the too-big leather jacket he's been wearing all season and throw it into the fire (symbolism !) and he gives it a good ol' salt 'n burn and john's ghost goes up in flames in a parallel / call back to the pilot. poetic cinema

late seasons cas would actually implode if he ever met season one dean. i think we all would but like hear me out. cas never got to meet dean at the peak of his bratty twink era - the dean that always rallied for a kiss for a job well done, the dean that wore an oversized jacket, the dean that had to tell sam to chill out, the dean that didn’t need a whiskey to fall asleep at night, the dean whose voice wasn’t forever altered from years of screaming his lungs out in hell. this 26 yr old hypermasc dumbass would be like precious gold to him.

of course, cas appreciates dean at all points but i feel like he’d be so intent on protecting season one dean specifically. like this is the boy that had hope for the world. this silly little guy with his cassette tapes and perfect pouty lips. and oh, this poor oblivious dean. this dean who thought vampires were fictional. who hasn’t believed in a higher power since his mother was alive. now he’s got an angel, an honest to god angel telling him that he’s good enough, that he’s more than just sam’s keeper, that he is loved.

oh and the ride to poundtown? yeah, it’d be like the slow climb of a roller coaster with dean in denial and cas not wanting to taint this perfect creation and then when it finally crests the top - dean giving in, flirting hopelessly w/ cas ignoring his attempts until he finally just straight up tries to get into cas’ pants - only for the roller coaster to go over the hill and the descent is just as slow as the beginning - cas rejecting him out of some perceived guilt and sense of duty, dean withdrawing from him, humiliated. granted, the first time would be the most painfully loving and reverent act one can possibly imagine - while the subsequent encounters afterwards would be filthy. like this is the dean that flirted w/ everything that moved, you can bet your ass he’s on that angel 25/7 and poor cas, sweet worn and weary cas, goes full “will you, boy?” dom on that bitch. don’t get me started on how the mouth watering the height/build difference would be

A Fabulous Evening's Apocalypse

Look at it this way: Their trip to the far end of space and time to chase a (very) long shot at freeing Dean from the Mark of Cain could have ended a lot worse than it did. It wasn't even the worst idea they'd ever had. The so-called Restaurant At the End of the Universe loops endlessly in time through the final hours of Creation while guests dance, eat, and drink until the very last of last calls. A consequence of it being a time loop is that anybody who visits can meet everybody else who was ever there. Even a centuries-dead witch who likes the challenge of lifting unbreakable curses. It didn't work out like they'd hoped, but they didn't die. True, Cas did get stranded there for a bit but they got him back. Eventually. So it was fine. That was then. And now, Sam and Dean are out of ideas for getting Cas out of the Empty. Dean has been thinking a lot about realizing important truths too late, and missed chances, and (very) long shots. And he wonders if the key to rescuing the Cas he lost might just be enlisting the help of the Cas he left behind nearly ten years ago. If it doesn't work, at least he'll get to see Cas one more time.

"I don't know for sure if he's the man from your photo, but they do look awfully alike. He'll probably be in the Fomalhaut Lounge. You can take the service passages," Zmallia said. She stepped back into a particularly shadowy corner and pressed a barely-visible panel. There was a whirr as a door he hadn't noticed slid open. "The fastest way is to follow the signs for the engine room until you get to the stairs, then keep going up until you see the big panel of signs for the different bars," she explained rapidly. "And don't take the elevator unless you want an argument. Obviously," she added.

Dean nodded as if this made any sense at all and ducked into the dimly lit passage. "Good luck!" Zmallia called after him.

And just as the door whirred shut: "Sorry I yelled at you earlier!"

As soon as he had rounded a corner, Dean stopped and leaned against the wall, bracing his hands on his knees. The new round of headache and nausea wasn't quite as intense as what he had felt when he stepped out of the portal, but it was still bad enough he couldn't just power through it.

Going soft in my old age, he thought. It wasn't as painful a thought as it would once have been.

Many flights of stairs and about fifteen minutes later, Dean stepped into a high-ceilinged, softly-lit room decorated in dark golds and blues. It wasn't overly crowded, but it was large enough that Dean couldn't tell right away whether or not Cas was actually here. The "room" was almost a balcony, Dean realized: the longest wall was a waist-high glass railing that provided an unobstructed view of what was left of the dying universe, easily observed through the great transparent dome covering the entire restaurant. A good part of the crowd was gathered near the railing, and many others were nursing drinks at the long curving bar, which was backed by open shelving through which you could see the opposite side of the dome. Dean had just decided to ask one of the waiters if they'd seen Cas when he spotted him behind the bar, polishing a glass and looking perfectly at home, solid and real.

He had thought it might be a shock to see Cas alive again, and it was — the best kind of shock. It was beyond awesome to see Cas right there. The recessed lighting from the bar angled off his cheekbones and made his hair look even darker than it was. His uniform was spotless. He looked like a movie star. He almost looked like he was glowing.

But in a rotten, selfish way, seeing him was disappointing: this Cas lacked five years' worth of experience that had shaped the person who had died for Dean (while Dean had stood there, useless and uncertain.) This Cas had never even imagined knowing Jack. The happiness Dean felt choking his throat just meant he was putting his own greedy feelings ahead of his Cas, the one still trapped in the Empty. The one Dean had come all this way to try to bring home.

But thinking that also felt rotten. Dean knew that this Cas was, literally at this moment, waiting for Dean or Sam to help him get home. Maybe he was worrying that they wouldn't be able to. (Or wouldn't bother.) How did the Cas in front of him deserve less?
