Been thinking about this again. About c!Sapnap wearing the mask and taunting c!Dream, knowing it’s importance. For someone who believes c!Dream doesn’t have any attachments and doesn’t care about him, he sure does take a lot of effort to take something for no other reason than c!Dream’s attachment to it. Because it’s not like he needed the armor, he already had some. If c!Dream truly doesn’t have attachments then it doesn’t matter what armor and mask he wears to terrorize the server. C!Sapnap just didn’t want to give him back what belonged to him, what he longed for - a piece of himself, his persona, his mask.

And I keep thinking about c!Tubbo and c!Tommy in theory wearing c!Dream’s armor in the disc finale - wearing the mask. And the utter disrespect that comes with, but also how powerful they must have felt wearing the face of the monster that haunted their dreams.

So, if in the finale c!Dream’s helmet, that he takes off for c!Tommy, represents his mask, does that mean that when c!Sapnap puts on c!Dream’s armor, Nightmare, he is putting on and stealing c!Dream’s mask? - Because I’m not gonna lie that really puts a new perspective on that betrayal… Furthermore, when c!Techno brings c!Dream armor in prison, did he make him a mask and bring it to him… and then take away the mask later? - If so, again that’s kinda screwed up. Though you could argue that perhaps he made c!Dream a mask for the jailbreak so he had one to face the server with and then because they were trying to not seem like allies he took it back, knowing that c!Dream would get another one. Which also begs the question, did c!Punz make c!Dream a mask for after prison or is he simply handing over one of c!Dream’s masks?… When c!Tommy in the minecart skirmish stole c!Dream’s armor, was he taunting him with his own mask? - Because oof that’s some serious violation and disrespect…

In other words, if you think that c!Dream’s helmet in the finale represents the mask (which I’d say is implied by c!Tommy) does that same logic apply across the board or is it just for that moment? And if it does apply to rest of the lore, wow does that have some implications…

Hey so uh how does one actually go about watching dsmp lore??? I tried watching it in full once from a big ass yt playlist that was meant to have all the important stuff but it was loads of giant long vods that I don't have the attention span for with tiny amounts of relevent lore and I didn't make it very far. I'm assuming ur not supposed to watch it like a show, right??? Like you don't have to watch literally everything that happened???? I could probably just cherrypick some important+interesting plot points and watch them in a vague order????? How do you people do this

Ah yes, DSMP lore, the forever discussion. I'll be honest, it's not easy to get into the DSMP lore because you have a bunch of different POVs that cover a bunch of different plot lines and events, and at least some of this is lost media (streams were not always archived so there are big chunks of people's POVs missing).

I agree that trying to watch ALL of it (all POVs, all storylines) is not a good approach. What is a good approach might be subjective, but here's my personal advice for the best way to experience the DSMP canon as a latecomer:

1 - Pick a specific POV and start with that

A lot easier than trying to watch all in one go or even cherry-picking 'important events' is to pick one specific person's POV and try to watch all of that. You can use a CC whose style you mash with. Personally, I would highly recommend Techno's POV not because I'm biased (though I am) but because he's one of the few CC who has a convenient playlist with all his streams, so you get a complete experience. He also was reasonably involved in a lot of 'bigger' events without streaming daily to the point it gets overwhelming to backwatch his POV. The downside of his POV is you'll miss the pre-Pogtopia stuff, but you can use his POV as a starting point to decide what other CC you'd want to see their POVs of, or watch more POVs of a specific event AFTER you've experienced it within the canon timeline. I do not recommend watching them in a vague order to start out though, I do feel you'd significantly lose the impact of the story.

2 - Yes, you have to watch the giant long vods (kinda)

Yes, the dsmp has a lot of random long 'filler' vods in between big events, but that filler often does build characters and makes you attached to them, so I don't really think skipping them completely and only watching compilations of big events is really going to give you a good experience. People also drop surprise background info in the vods sometimes, there's roleplay beyond just the Big Events (tm). At the very least, you should skim the large vods or maybe play them in the background while doing something else. If you pick a CC you really like, their long vods won't feel like a chore (again, Techno is great for this since he's so entertaining imo).

3 - But also you don't HAVE to watch the long vods (or anything)

On the other hand, the upside of the multiple POV thing is that you don't really like, have to experience everybody's POV. It's okay (and part of the true dsmp experience) to miss out on stuff. I never got into Kinoko Kingdom, I never got into Karl's whole time travel thing, I know very little about Puffy or Ponk or even Eret. You can just stick to your chosen POV and even if that's all you ever invest in, you got yourself a lovely little story to follow. Do not feel the pressure of needing to partake in EVERY plot line or character because I don't think there are many dsmp fans wo have done that and had a good time lol.

4 - You can get your lore from other sources

If you do want to know more about specific events, characters, dynamics, etc and don't want to watch a million POVs, there's really no shame in getting your lore from other sources. Fanart, fanfic, animatics, the wiki, transcripts or lore analysis fans wrote, etc. My only advice is to stay mindful that fans are biased and in the dsmp fandom specifically some people get really fanon-y with their interpretations, so keep that in the back of your mind. Try to take everything with a grain of salt or not just listen to the stans of one character, because they might be misrepresenting canon lol.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of the compilation videos that try to condense the entire dsmp because they often seem super biased to one character and you lose all the charm of the multi-pov approach, hence why I don't advise them as, like, the 'main' or 'first' way to get into dsmp. BUT if you already watched your chosen blorbo's POV and you just want to get some more bite-sized content on one specific event or character, some compilation videos can be nice. Just, again, be aware that you're losing at least SOME context and seeing a very condensed version.

If you want to partake in any kind of lore analysis or discussion for the love of god make sure you got your canon facts straight bc I'm so sick of people bringing fanon/heacanons into actual lore posts- -gets shot-

5 - Just find somebody who is mentally ill /j

In the same vein as 'it's okay to get your lore from other sources', other sources can be 'a random dude on tumblr'. There's a ton of people who are still very passionate about specific characters/lore from the dsmp or the dsmp as a whole, and who probably are more than willing to talk about their favs and lay out the lore for you. I know I certainly need only minimal encouragement to yap about c!Techno and his lore and his relationships for HOURS, and I'm knowledgeable about canon dsmp lore in general, so even if it's not about c!Techno I don't mind answering questions. Curious about a specific character/event/lore thing? Just ask somebody. It's free, it's quick, it's going to make a mentally ill person's day /hj

Again with this one I do advise keeping in mind that some people are biased and might confuse fanon with canon (I'm reasonably good at not doing that, I'd say, but I am a little biased towards c!Techno to some degree probably), and I'd only advise doing it after you've already watched your chosen POV at least for a little while and only use it to get extra info or other perspectives. Unless you wanna ask somebody to lay out like, THE ENTIRE LORE of the server which seems kinda silly. But I bet you'd still find somebody who is willing to do that (sombody is me).

You call out. “Hello?” But nothing answers except tiny scuttling down in the basement, you creep to the bottom of the steps and look around. You can’t seem to find anything so you locate the power box and walk towards it. A few feet away you hear a squeal and look down to see you stepped on a rat’s tail. You frown and quickly move your foot. It runs to the wall and stares at you defensively.

Poor c!Sam is not doing very well in the aftermath of the Red Banquet. Sam is now the guardian of the Egg, the Warden of Pandora's Vault whose job is to keep it contained. The obsidian is helping with the mental effects from the Egg, but he's gone and fallen down the rabbit hole without it.

It might have been better if he'd had other people to act as prison guards for Pandora, but Sam judged that putting more people in close proximity to the Egg, when it has mind control powers, is a bad idea. Especially since the only 3 people shown to have resistance to the Egg are c!Tommy (a child), c!Ranboo (a child), and c!Techno (the anarchist. And also Sam is maybe holding a little, tiny grudge about him for working with Dream during Doomsday and not noticing, or caring, that something was Wrong With Dream).

See, Sam's rabbit hole starts with poor c!Dream. He was Good at the start of the server. Sam remembers him being Good, remembers being his friend and helping him with redstone projects. But then Dream started to become Bad (because of his Driver, no doubt). But Dream knew enough of himself, even when he was Becoming Evil, to know about the Egg, and the threat it was, and tried to warn the server about the Egg. He even went so far as to help build Pandora, to stop the Egg, and he trusted Sam to be it's Warden.

Sam couldn't recognize that Dream needed help the first time. Couldn't even see that something was Wrong With Dream until after Doomsday, when Dream went so far to engineer his own defeat the destruction of his Driver's plans by not paying Punz enough to stop the betrayal, by not fighting with all the strength of a Blade to kill Tommy and Tubbo before anyone even got there.

Clearly it was the last remnants of the Good Dream. The Dream that the fought against the Egg. That built Pandora. That made Sam the Warden of Pandora.

Dream trusted Sam, so Sam has to do a good job. And maybe then Sam will be able to find Dream and Save his Core Crystal. It won't be the same as the Dream who was Sam's friend, but it will still be Dream. And then maybe, finally, everything will be right again.

So Sam is equating Dream being missing to a plot by the Egg. Which... isn't right? But he's managed to figure out some of Staged Finale (Dream deliberately letting himself be killed), even if he's equating it to Dream trying to stop/foil a plan by his unknown Driver. Given the way Pandora's Vault is built to contain the Egg in this AU, Sam is projecting Dream's apparent change from "Good" to "Evil" as his Driver being got by the Egg.

There's a lot of sticking Dream up on a pedestal, as a Blade who can Do No Wrong of his own will and is confined by the wishes and wants of his Driver. Clearly the best solution to wanting to be Dream's friend again, without worrying that Dream will be Corrupted by the New Driver is for Sam to become Dream's Driver. Surely that will make everything perfect again!

And maybe Sam wasn't quite obsessing over Pandora's Vault pre-Red Banquet, but he's certainly doing that now. c!Ponk was the more reasonable one, keeping him balanced. And now Ponk has been taken by the Egg, which is clearly still dangerous if Ponk hasn't recovered and come back to him.

And Sam's not wrong. The Egg is still dangerous. While obsidian insulates the Egg temporarily, does not stop it permanently. Sam is there all the time. In Pandora's Vault.

The Egg is whispering.

Info About The Egg

- This is the Egg, also known as the Crimson! I just combine the two and call it the Crimson Egg personally, but that's just me.

- The Egg has the ability to communicate telepathically with people through strange whispers in an unknown language. Those affected by the Egg have the ability to hear and understand the Egg's whispers, eventually infected by the Egg and obeying it's every whim like it's a god. Others, however, may develop an instinctive dislike for the Egg, while others are completely unaffected by it.

- The Egg manipulates people by promising to grant their deepest desires. It is assumed -- by the wiki, at least -- that Tommy having everything he's ever wanted --such as the discs -- may be the reason he was immune to the Egg's influence, so keep that in mind.

- Anyone corrupted and infected by the Egg gradually show more and more affection to it, becoming more and more subservient to the Egg, until they no longer have any personal identity, doing anything and everything for the Egg.

- The only known way to free those under the influence of the Egg is to -- in Minecraft -- cover it with obsidian. However, nobody just has obsidian on hand, so... uh... try concrete. Even then, he Egg has the ability to corrode any barricade that encloses it over time.

- The Egg is extremely hard to break and will eventually regenerate itself with a hot substance akin to but not quite magma.

- In case you're not familiar with the Egg/the Crimson from the DSMP, IT'S BIG. BIG BIG. NOT A TINY EGG, NOOOOO... BIG EGG.

- I, the mod, will be trying to think of a way to nerf this thing. Suggestions are welcome.

Tiny interlude: it’s not the main focus, but the ableism is there. It’s also very much in Wilbur’s pride. Not wanting to be seen as weak, thus hiding how hurt he is like it’s something to be ashamed of. It’s a good tell of who he trusts, even if he does not view it like that.

[Tommy was one of the few people he could stomach seeing him in such a weak state. Besides him, Wilbur would only ever get out of bed when his father, Ponk, or Techno were around. Otherwise he stayed seated, refusing to let Niki or Quackity witness that.]

This is a very clear list. Ponk is obvious. He’s a doctor. His father and Techno are obvious too. That’s his family. They raised him. They’ve probably seen him sick a bunch of times.

Tomys is a slightly different story. The kid has already seen him at his lowest and he did not get a choice in that matter, BUT the kid has proven himself to be trustworthy. He didn’t abandon Wilbur. He took care of him even. He can be trusted because it’s what they have been doing, just in a different context.

Then there’s Niki and Quackity. I think the reason he does not trust them is mostly to save face. Again he thinks it’s humiliating that he cannot walk on his own. He does not want them to see him like that. And maybe he just wants to keep some normality with them. Pretend this isn’t real for a conversation (or at least not be confronted with it by trying to walk.)

yeah, if tommy hadn't already seen wilbur at his lowest in that cave there's no way wilbur would feel comfortable letting him see his physical struggles now. but he already saw wilbur when he could barely move in the cave. he knows tommy won't abandon him or judge him for his weakness.

and like you pointed out, it's more about saving face with niki and quackity than anything else. he knows that they're both his friends who won't judge him for that, but he doesn't want his childhood friends to see how he's been 'weakened'. and of course he also just wants to be able to pretend it's not real around them as well. there's a lot of ableism, both internalized and externally, in this medieval-esque world.

as someone who is trying to re watch the series but still doesn't remenber some stuff i cool seeing your essays :D they're fun to watch. Also i didn't remenbered how silly dsmp was until re-watching. Like the start is just people (and csapnap and ctommy) killing and annoying each other and cdream being like tired of all of this but still happy with his friends. Like the start of the discs war doesn't have this dramatic tone of life or death that future arcs have. Everything in this pre-cwilbur era is going fine in general

Truly very silly, which I think is partly what makes it so good. In my opinion really good media mixes dark themes with humor, because that makes it entertaining and a little less depressing to watch. It’s what makes Technoblade so enjoyable to watch because he blends those serious tones with humor, not in a way that undercuts their gravity or invalidates them but just tries to lighten the mood.

I think I will disagree with you a little in regards to how things were all fun and games in the beginning and not as serious in the disc saga, because to me Dream sounds similarly as pissed off in that war as he does in the speech about Spirit.

Is it as serious as Doomsday or Prison and stuff later? No but I think we do the story a dishonor when we don’t take the beginning of the server as seriously, something I often see. Because even if perhaps it wasn’t as serious for most characters, clearly it did matter to Dream as he brings it up specifically in the finale despite it having been years since then… like yes obviously the prison arc is a much more serious, darker turn in the story but make no mistake just because it was all fun and games for Tommy and Sapnap, doesn’t mean it felt that way for the rest of the members. I mean how many times did Ponk’s tree get burned, and Alyssa straight up leaves before things really amp up plot wise. And like yes, the theatre of it all heightens when Wilbur enters the scene, and yes when plots get more developed so does the drama of it all, but I think sometimes we confuse story structure with seriousness. And true, canon lives I think play a big role with how serious things become, but still I think the fact that Dream [post] holds onto grudges from the start speaks to how serious it was to him. And even Tommy, brings up his first day in the finale too [post] clearly it did matter and it did hurt them to the point it was something they still hated eachother for years later.

Egg!Velvet! I have a whole ass headcanons/separate AU about how Egg took Velvet's body so bear with me, alright?

First of all, the Egg itself has 2 forms: its Egg form(that we saw all the time in canon) and its "human" form, which isn't actually a human form, but about this later.

The Egg form has minimum power(mind-control and passive vines usage) but max defense (it's almost impossible to destroy it as in canon). Its human form is the complete opposite, it has max power but min defense, making it much easier to kill(basically as an average player with 1 life). The Egg was in its max defense form when c!Bad found it as I theorized that it was already defeated( almost). Sort of like clown Pennywise, it went into egg form to heal itself and then proceeded to take over as much as possible.

Now, after the Red Banquet, the Egg had enough energy to go into its second form, but the catch is that it needed a body to do so. Why the Egg didn't take any random body? Well, to say simply it wanted to fucked up the minds of its subjects even more, and what is better for this, than to use the body of their long-lost friend and boyfriend of one of its most loyal subjects after c!Bad? So, with c!Ponk's help(he is the only doctor around here) they prepared the body of c!Velvet for its own usage.

Now, after The Egg took over the Velvet's body its power transform it but not too much, as it still wanted to play with the minds of the Eggpire. Velvet's hair used to be red and fluffy, the Egg made it white and used gel to make it rougher (?). Velvet used to wear more casual clothes, the Egg wears more official like.

In anyway The Egg is still the Egg, but it's a little tough to believe it when it has the face of your friend. Though, I have a funny idea, how after long usage of Velvet's body the Egg started to have feelings(bleh) and be softer to the Eggpire members. Sort of like, it gives them a day off but then like "wtf why would I do that"

I have 2 possible outcomes for this AU( I decided this is the AU now). The angsty one, where despite every soft motion towards Eggpire, it is still the Egg, it still does not care about anyone but itself and after it is defeated all that is left is the dead body of their friend, forever changed by the will of the parasite.

Or the nicer one, that involves c!Velvet making a deal with Lady Death(Kristin), slowly taking back control of his own body, epic battle within the mind, and then a long recovery for members of Eggpire and now very alive Velvet, who also has a tiny bit of Eggs power

But that is another story.

Is that the icing on the cake? - a sprinkling of snow.

Our long and difficult walk - Antlers to tease us, but no reindeer apart from those seen from the ship. And one of several small ponds with strange concentric ice patterns on the surface.

The three huts we walked around and a wasteland of whale, seal and walrus bones from a couple of cruel, dark centuries past - and an attempt by someone to create a little art (or a fireplace) from the carnage.

Some more glaciers and an iceberg reflecting the hard-to-see ripples in the sea.

Heather on a 'diamond' beach (lots of shiny bergy bits) and a strand of kelp - it attaches to the smallest stone and flourishes until it is thrust up onto the beach.

An impressive precipice and our tiny ship dwarfed by the landscape.

The frozen lake (the closer one) where I skipped my ponk, ponk, ponk stones. The video comes next - turn up the sound! It was such fun.

Oh. Stars. Girl, I read the first two chapters of the big bang and I commented but—okay I’m trying to be more social, just bear with me—fifteen chapters prewritten of dream-centric au fic where there’s no Tommy and I get my angst? Where he’s not the villain? Sister, I could cry, this is perfect!!!

I love how you made Skeppy just so small! (I’m a sucker for size difference stuff!) And I want to hug Dream and hiss at George and Co. like a demented gargoyle (god I love that descriptor, demented gargoyle) because NO! That’s my GUY! He’s doing his BEST and you better be NICE mister! Or I’m coming for YOU!

I have subscribed and I probably won’t end up commenting much but this fic is shaping up to be something that I’m downloading the moment it’s finished so no matter what happens I can read it and enjoy it forever!

Eeeeeeee! Okay, some of my FAVOURITE pieces from the first two chapters;

“If you finish that sentence, I will stab you,” Ponk said pleasantly.

I get so much joy from bits like this; threat said sweetly or pleasantly or kindly or whatever. The sheer differnece between the threat and the way it’s spoken; also, when stuff like this is used to create humour, I also love that, but here it’s the idea of Ponk smiling with all his teeth and speaking very plainly and laying out what he’ll do and by all accounts he’s being nice but there’s that threat!!!

“Oh, bite me, Techno,” Sapnap snapped.

“Would rather not, thanks. Who knows where you’ve been?” 

The implication that Sapnap is like a stray dog who might have rabies is so fucking funny, and is absolutely something I can picture Technoblade saying. It’s just the perfect response to what Sapnap has said, and is perfectly in character! Also, right after this you mention that Skeppy is perched on Technoblade’s shoulder and UGH anything that reminds the reader of a size difference will have my heart. Always. (Look this isn’t a kink, I just really, really enjoy it, okay?)

Anyway, I WILL be reading all thirteen chapters the moment I see that they’re published, and while I can’t promise any more comments (I am scatteredbrained little bish) I just wanted you to know this fic is epic!

c!Techno is a joy to write forever and always, mmhm. He provides most of this fic's comedic relief, it would probably get too bleak without him tbh. c!Orphan Trio are criminally underrated and deserve more moments together yessss.
