Does anyone else feel like the fears are a bit more overlapping than before? Like maybe being extruded into a new reality made them less separate entities or 'Gods' and almost like elements (like the alchemical stuff we keep hearing about - Celia talks about it in the context of her transportation, Sam knows about it, Colin rants about it before smashing Alice's phone) that can form alloys and compounds with each other?
Like, the investment app that has you destroy your life for money feels very Devastation (specifically Jude's story) but then the guy gets swarmed by what the content warning suggests are bugs - and gambling is very the Web, as it's a type of addiction. (Ditto the violin story and the dice).
Mr Bonzo feels like the Stranger because it's that uncanny 'guy in a costume' thing but also Filth because he's described as having these pustules and being gross and rotting.
The guy who rots into the garden is very Filth aligned but also the Lonely (continuous night, very obviously being alone and hallucinating). And the whole garden thing is reminiscent of the Flesh garden.
The millennium dome site feels a lot like the Buried but again has that strong Filth connotation and the creation of doubles, like the Stranger.
There were always overlaps and that was sort of a key point in TMA's eye ritual storyline - that the entities do cross over and share common ground. BUT, it feels a lot more pervasive in TMP and the shift towards alchemy and the ideal of 'balance' is also new.
And we also have a new categorisation system, instead of each statement being about one fear, the OIAR has 2 categorisation 'slots' per piece of evidence. And this has changed how the wiki works as well. So it's almost like the structure of the story (and we've seen this before with the conceit of narration becoming a crucial part of the world building and story and not just 'because it's a podcast') now supports the notation of multiple entities per statement.
Anyone else feel like the fears are more...conjoined than before?

So I have this theory about the Entities in TMP. We know that the alternate worlds referenced in season 5 are similar to the world TMA took place in with slight differences. The experiences of the statement giver from Mag 114 (the cleaning lady who worked at Hilltop Road) is an early example of this: none of her friends knew how she knew them, she'd never heard of the Magnus Institute before and the dates were all wrong. Same deal with the Magnus Protocol, where the location of the Magnus Institute is different and the place burned down 17 years before TMA started. We also know that new Entities emerge when enough people fear something enough in a way that's distinctive from the already existing Entities. (EG: The Extinction branching off from The End). So what if those differences in the alternate worlds have resulted in cultures/ values being just different enough that what people fear/ how it manifests and new Entities have arisen from it? Which brings us to the meat of my theory: obviously the Magnus Institute is still a part of the Eye, based on what we heard in the second statement from the first episode. And I've seen some people talking about the OIAR also being part of the Eye. But what if it's not? Colin is convinced something/ someone is listening. In TMA, statements were collected in order to feed the Eye, and in TMP, the cases that get sorted through and documented are sometimes read out loud by one of the three Voices or it's otherwise an audio recording anyone present would then basically be forced to listen to. So what if there's another entity similar to/ split off from the Eye, but instead of it being the fear of being watched/ exposed/ followed, it's tied to the fear that someone's always listening; a fear of exposure distinct from that of the Eye, related to your secrets being heard. Etc. Etc. And what if that's the Entity that the OIAR is tied to? As silly as it may sound, it'd probably be called The Ear or the Listening.

incredibly intrigued by your sam thoughts give me more
hooooohohohohohoh *rubs together grubby little raccoon paws*
I am excited to answer this and also don't know how much more I'll be able to say about Sam that I haven't already discussed here and here (though danged if I'm not going to try!)
Something that I think is central to understanding how my brain thinks about Sam is the way I think about Gwen; more specifically-
Tumblr media
(Gwen and Sam from @boonsandwhatever 's amazing art, found here)
While I don't truly think they're the exact same character, I believe that what we've seen of them so far suggests that we are looking at two characters who, in their heart of hearts, are very similar in terms of their inner selves and motivations, but who are nonetheless being set up to walk two very different paths.
So how are they similar? We've seen so far that Gwen and Sam are both
goal-oriented
hardworking
stubborn
temperamental (Sam less openly, but it's there)
petty (not as obviously as Alice, but it's soooo there)
curious
seeking validation for their work/pursuits/questions
not in the career/field they had aspired to be in
under tremendous pressure from their families (Gwen's has not been directly addressed, but what we know of the Bouchards and and Gwen's comments about her 'friend' circles seems to suggest this)
driven (Gwen towards power/recognition, Sam towards understanding - both of these tie into that need for validation)
barely holding it together
more sensitive to teasing than they let on
imposter syndrome? (this one may actually be a stretch but all of the above similarities strongly suggest this one)
Of all of the above traits, "curious" and "seeking validation" are the two that I feel are Sam and Gwen's strongest motivators right now - and were also the source of their conflict in episode 18. They are, of course, pursuing answers to their own questions without realizing that, in this case, they are the ants seeing separate parts of the massive and horrible mystery that is pushing into their lives.
Sam's path has him looking out as he seeks to learn more about The Magnus Institute and about the catalysts and victims of the cases they get at the OIAR. Gwen's path has her looking up, as she questions the role the OIAR plays within the government/society, how it is structured and managed, and what employing literal monsters has to do with it all.
In an ideal world, Sam and Gwen would team up to be like the supernatural Wonder Twins. If they're able to see past their misunderstandings and the walls they've put up, I think they could actually get a lot done - but I worry that their insecurities, ambitions, and lack of validation at the right times/in the right places will push them further away from the best possible allies they have: each other.
(If you're fanfiction inclined, I've actually explored some of these team/friendship dynamics in my fic "Pieces of You." Part 2 continues to explore how Sam and Gwen interact when they are seemingly in opposition)
I do think there is a very good chance that both Sam and Gwen end up in difficult, morally challenging, or outright evil situations as a result of their need for understanding, recognition, and validation. I've seen a lot of folks suggesting that Sam could become "avatar-ized" or willingly take on The Powers of the Horrors in order to finally "live up to the potential" that he perceives himself as having been denied when he was rejected from The Magnus Institute. As for Gwen, I think (hope, pray) that her own insecurities and need to prove herself could lead her right into the claws of Lady Mowbray, someone that she has already defended in front of Lena simply for being of a higher echelon, and who has already given Gwen a level of recognition that she did not expect but clearly craves (when Lady M asks about her family line). Of course I would be tickled pink if they both got over themselves, communicated, and worked together to overcome (or at least understand) The Horrors!
Anyway, I know this ended up being more of a Sam and Gwen rant, but I hope you enjoyed, and thanks again for asking!

a promise is a promise, prsiriedawn. your 12 reblogs <3
On turning into the skid:
OK guys, I trust your judgment and I'm messing with a metaphor. This is partly a little thing, but partly it feeds into my entire alternate interpretation of the Fears.
Which flows through all three of my AUs.
So, you know how, when you're driving on icy roads (if you have never had the pleasure I envy you greatly)
And you lose traction and go into a skid, your first instinct is to wrench the wheel in the opposite direction, and that's absolutely the worst thing to do?
But the best thing to do, the right thing to do is to turn into the skid so the wheels have a chance to roll and get traction again.
Part of why the Fears are so powerful is that our knee jerk reaction is to turn the wheel in the opposite direction and fight the skid. We turn our fear of the Stranger into cruel xenophobia, we flinch from the thought of our own End rather than facing it honestly and with grace, we expect others to limit the depth and expression of their Desolation to make us more comfortable--and so on.
Our efforts to avoid fear make us more afraid
And sometimes, they rob us of the chance to grow.

TMAGP 39 - Dependents Spoilers
Reactions and Theories
Reactions:
GEORGIEE!! Ok, so Sam episode! Yay!!
Alice's parents' house?
Could still be alive? So TMAGP!Alice's parents are dead?
Breaking and Entering, go Georgie! Be gay do crimes!
Sam's humming is a fun nervous habit
TMA!Alice!
She's kissing him??
They were married???????????
Oh shit, TMA!Sam is dead...
Oh that's interesting, a lot of couples were trapped together.
Dreamsharing??? Like Jon and Elias did????
Ok, so Alice is in retail, beep-beep.
They were in the Flesh domain... That would make sense with TMAGP!Sam's trauma with the skeleton at the Institute.
Oooof, as a trans person, I am relating really hard to this story(? statement?) rn
Not the flesh being transphobic too /jjj
T4T Sam and Alice anyone?
This is very statemnt-y... Is [ERROR] there? Or Sam, do you have something you want to tell us? A connection with the Eye perhaps?
I wonder if Basira's a dreamer? With Daisy?
"Don't leave." Ouch.
THANK YOU SAM, SOMEONE NOTICED!
Oh, so they ARE going back to Alice. That's gonna be bad. She and Sam in TMA-verse (from her statement at least) seemed pretty co-dependent...
THE ARCHIVIST CAN TRAVEL THROUGH THE TAPE RECORDERS???? IT'S THE ONE LISTENING??????????
Theories:
From what we know so far about TMA!Alice, everyone she loved (her parents, Luke, and Sam) is dead, and she is stuck alone, with the only connection to her past being through her dreams (to Sam). This STRONGLY parallels TMAGP!Alice, which makes me extremely worried for her and her meeting with Heinrich Unheimlich even more worrying, with his Flesh elements (the cannibalism (?) pigs).
However, there is a difference between the two Alices: Our Alice isn't with Sam, she is not in a co-dependent relationship with Sam. I hope that this is enough to change her fate. Furthermore, while Alice is working on getting Sam back, she is more focused at the moment, with retracing Colin's steps and figuring out what FR3D1 is. I'm hoping this connection (as well as Celia's friendship and Gwen's friendship (possibly more)) will save her. She has much more of a support system in TMAGP and she has the added "distraction" (for lack of better words) with Colin's notes (and Joe Spooky's cousin/j).
The Archivist seems to be growing more powerful, with the traveling through tape recorders and (possibly) compelling without being physical present or killing Alice (although, I'm more inclined to believe that this was Sam compelling her, as he has been the only one to survive the Archivist when giving a full statement). What's interesting about this is that it's not going after Sam. It not going after Georgie and Melonie makes sense - one cannot feel fear and the other severed her connection with the Eye, but it has no real reason NOT to finish Sam off, unless it can't. This might mean that Sam's connecting to the "leftovers" of the domain, however, he probably won't Become, since the Fears are much more present in TMAGP!verse.
As for the next Sam episode, I think Alice might die. It would make sense for her too, she's stuck with the Fears as the only chance to see Sam (her Sam), and would probably jump at the chance to see him again (sort of like Ash in ep 37). I feel like it's going to act as a wake-up call of sorts for Sam? Like, oh shit, this could happen to MY Alice (as she's actively in danger with Heinrich Unheimlich). Maybe TMAGP!Alice Becomes. She will probably get scars. Maybe (but hopefully not) she'll die (please don't die TMAGP!Alice). Either way, it would act as a nice parallel between universes.
Based on the pattern, episode 40 should be back in TMAGP!verse, so I guess we'll get to see what will happen to Alice (please don't die, please don't die, please don't die).
See y'all next week!
(No updates on the Bingo yet. I mainly based it on TMAGP!Verse- Gwen hasn't screwed up completely yet and we haven't seen those I predicted we would see from TMA so...maybe something next week?)

ok shitty little tmagp theory time: Alice or Celia (or mayyyybe Gwen) are the new 'administrator' for Freddie.
During the Colin-eating sequence, Freddie says both "administrator privileges revoked" (presumably in reference to Colin) and something like "new administrator privileges granted" with no clear evidence who it could be. There are four main possibilities for who this could be: Celia, Alice, Gwen, or a new character as yet unknown. I doubt it'd be a new person so we'll rule that out for now. Though Gwen is now technically in charge of the OIAR, considering Lena presumably wasn't the 'administrator' before I doubt she'd be the new one now. Also it just seems like she has other stuff going on for her character. Celia has been communicating the most directly with the computers up to this point, and I could honestly see it being her, but two main things stand against her: 1, she wasn't at the office at the time (less of a concern, but like still) and 2, she has a lot of other things going on for her story/character with Jack, the dimension stuff, Sam and all her other drama. I think Alice is the best fit for a few reasons: 1, she's worked at the OIAR for a long time (if not the longest? I'm unsure if Gwen came after her or not, but she's up there); 2, she has a pretty established relationship with Freddie ("do not hit on the computer while i'm working on it", naming the voices), 3, besides getting Sam back Alice doesn't have a particularly clear storyline going forward - so maybe trying to wrangle Freddie/take Colin's place (she was also way closer to Colin than any of the others) will become her new primary storyline.
Writing this I have remembered that Gwen was basically filling in for Colin while he was MIA, there's a scene where she's helping Alice with a .jmj error I believe, so maybe she does have a better possibility of getting tied to Freddie. But still, she has the whole externals management thing going on, and Alice really doesn't have anything else to do as a character besides trying to get Sam back (which is kind of boring on its own), so yeah. Food for thought, I guess.

had a theory on the 'W' metric mentioned in tmp 36 and quickly found other people who had gone much further with it -
but wanted to add my 2c anyway.
The link above theorises that DPHW means something similar to the 4 humors - sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic, but possibly with other names like dry, ????, hot and wet.
I thought the P may stand for 'phlegmatic' but that humor is associated with water and cold so then what would the W stand for?
Possibly Johnny has created his own names for them to make figuring this out harder, but in this case the P could mean 'cold AND wet' as cold foods for example were thought to make someone phlegmatic and that humor is associated with the cold AND wet. So it's ambiguous and doesn't quite fit right if you take W as meaning water/wet and P as being phlegmatic because they're related.
But W is used in alchemy to mean 'water' so very easy to categorise Mr Bonzo as 'wet' by that and possibly also falling under phlegmatic because of that.
So you have 4 humors but they're divided into 'wet', 'dry', 'cold' and 'hot'. But can occur as mixtures like 'wet and cold - phlegmatic' and 'dry and hot' - choleric'. Also, cold and dry (melancholy), and wet and hot (sanguine). Which explains how many cases feel like mixtures of different types of the old fears, because they are mixing different elements.
But what does that MEAN???
"Phlegm was used as a general term to describe white or colorless secretions such as pus, mucus, saliva, or sweat" - Bonzo is described as being sweaty and having pustules. Which very much sounds....wet.
Gross.
What I find interesting is that a 'phlegmatic temperament' is one which is reserved, ordered, unemotional and calm. Which is the opposite of Bonzo's childish chaos, unpredictable violence and lack of emotional regulation.
But is that the POINT? Is he characterised as W because he is means to elicit fear/a reaction FROM someone with a phlegmatic temperament, like Gwen who he utterly terrifies??? Like the stuffy important politicians and celebs who were fooled into thinking he really was a kid's mascot???
'W' might not apply to Bonzo, but to the victims in his cases. Like Lena at the gentleman's club, who was disdainful of the childish nonsense gifted to the groom. She fits the jaded, lack of whimsy, ordered and reserved personality type. Just like Gwen.
To invert this, the opposite of this sort of case would be someone who who thrives on chaos and being free-spirited, unrestrained, hot-tempered (possibly choleric, defined as "ambitious, decisive, aggressive, and short-tempered")....being subjected to forced order, monotony, restriction, lack of emotion and coldness (both temperature and temperament).
Cold and dry gets you melancholy - depression, introspection, dare I say loneliness? Wistful, drifting and empty.
Hot and wet? Optimistic, fun loving, extroverts - Sanguine personalities. Sort of like Choleric but without the aggression and temper.
Anyway, still rolling this idea around like a dung beetle with my ball of poop, but it feels like picking at the edge of something plausible.

So full disclosure, I actually listened to episode 7 on Saturday, but this episode had so damn much to it and I got a bit side tracked by a theory that I'm still working on but I really want to get this out before episode 8 comes out.
As usual, if you want to see the continuously updated and reblogged version of my red string board, you can find it here.
Today is Tuesday, 2/27/24. Episode 7 came out 5 days ago on 2/22/24.
“Talkers”
Norris (Voice: Martin?/ Alex)
Episode 1: “Reanimation (Partial) -/- Regret [Email]”. The Stranger? The End? The Dark? The Lonely? The Flesh? Arthur (Nolan?).
Episode 3: "Infection (full body" -/- Arboreal [Journal entry]". The Spiral? (Paranoia? Auditory, visual and olfactory hallucinations) The Lonely? The Corruption. The Flesh? (Callbacks to the Flesh Garden from S5)
Common Themes: Hearing the voice of a dead/ missing loved one?
Chester (Voice: John?/ Jonny)
Episode 1: “Transformation (eyes) -/- Tresspass [chat log]”. Magnus Institute, The Eye. (Involves a forum; the Web?).
Episode 5: "Disappearance (undetermined) -/- Invitation [Internet blog]". The Eye (Movies. Movie name: "Voyeur" "Must be seen to be believed"...). The Web? (Another website?). (Very reminiscent of Mag 110: Creature Feature.) The "poor old guy" at the theater is totally an Eye avatar, right? Kinda gives me "Simon Fairchild when he was first introduced" vibes.
Episode 7: "Agglomeration (miscellany) -/- congregation [email]". The Stranger. The Burried. The Desolation. Possibly all of them if my theory about the items the Volunteers brought in is correct...
Unsure if this is Eye related like the other statements were. This is also the first "Chester" statement where the source material wasn't from a website or blog, which don't have the same expectation of privacy that the sources of the other statements do. Email, though, so still internet related, and this seems to be an open letter rather than personal correspondence, so it still might align with the theme.
Agustus: (rare?)
Episode 4: “Collection (blood) -/- musical [letter]” The End. The Lonely? The Slaughter.
Letter writer thinks passing on his violin might allow a part of himself to live on in his nephew. Very Jonah Magnus of him.
Music teacher hears “faraway music”, then goes crazy and throws himself out of the carriage and dies. Reminiscent of Mag7 and the Piper? The merchant’s wares include dice (Mag 29?). Got the violin from him (took his blood?). Effect of the violin reminiscent to Grifter’s Bone (Mag 42).
(Oliver Bardwell lol very funny guys)
Non-Talkers (?)
Episode 2: "Transformation (full) -/- dysmorphic [video call]". The Spiral? The Flesh. The Stranger. Ink 5oul (avatar/ entity?)
Episode 6: "Injury (needles) -/- intimidation [999 call] "Corruption? The Spiral? The Flesh? The End?
"Needles" reminds me of Michael!Distortion.
Notes and Thoughts:
"It's not like we're dealing with Tape Recorders..." I'm side eying you real hard, Celia. And what's with all of the questions? The "looking for patterns" question is 100% fair but those examples are AWEFULLY SPECIFIC. I wasn't entirely sure I bought the idea that Celia was the same Celia from TMA, but no this is totally her for sure. "DO YOU KNOW WHO JOHN" IS EXCUSE ME? WHAT REAL STUFF?
HILLTOP CENTER BRANCH?!!! 0 managerial or other support from HR; very reminiscent of the weird circumstances surrounding the house on Hilltop Road. Bear skin rug very reminiscent of the Gorilla Skin in TMA S3. The Volunteers remind me of the medical students from Mag34. The email is about events from 2015. This was the same year Gertrude died and John became the Head Archivist in TMA. Why am I not seeing anyone else talk about this?
I have a theory that I was originally going to put in this post but detangling that giant ball of red string entirely is taking too long so I'm just going to put the TL'DR here and maybe make a proper list later if I can ever finish pulling the string on that particular red sweater. Between the items the Volunteers bring in, and the events of the incident itself, what if every single Entity is represented? The gunshots that were heard were the Slaughter. The fire was the Desolation. The person who wrote the email being crushed by all of the items was the Buried. There are a number of artifacts that get listed off that could represent at least one if not multiple Entities (which might be their purpose; considering how many times the fact that the categorization was imperfect got brought up in TMA, it's probably more helpful to view them as a spectrum more than anything else), including some that are very reminiscent of things from specific TMA statements (The bear skin rug -> The Gorilla skin, Old medical equipment -> the syringe in mag 45? The telescope -> Maxwell Rayner was originally Edmond Halley, the Astronomer, etc. etc). So...okay, hear me out: what if this was all part of a ritual, and that's what the "good cause" was? A ritual that involved all of the fears being represented? Sound familiar? Except instead of it being a ritual to start an apocalypse or reshape the world in the image of one or more of the fears, what if it was a ritual to summon something that was associated with all of the fears? Or, rather, what if it was a ritual to summon someone who had been touched by all of the fears? And that's also why so many of the items seem to be analogous to things from statements and events from TMA? Like....maybe I'm wrong entirely. Or maybe I'm right about this being about summoning someone, or something, (maybe someone from TMA? Maybe Celia?), but wrong about it being John who was being summoned. But, again, this incident took place in 2015, which was the same year Gertrude died and John became head Archivist, and I feel like this means something.

Woooo so the Magnus Protocol premiered and I have things to say and things to overanalyse!
As we know, 'Chester', 'Neil' and 'Augustus' are, maybe?, Jon, Martin, and Jonah, respectively. Hence this:
Tumblr media
And, of course, there's 'J1', 'M1' and 'J2' in the trailer.
However, I've seen confusion over the fact that the third 'Error' is voiced by Tim Fearon, who as far as I'm aware has not previously voiced any characters in the Magnus universe. Even though the name is distorted, I can make out what looks to be an H at the end of the name, so this very well may be Jonah.
Tumblr media
My theory is this: 'Augustus' is Jonah (or just his voice). However, since the body of Elias was killed in the Panopticon, Jonah does not use Elias' voice anymore. Jon, Martin, and Jonah are all disembodied, if we are to believe they are somehow inside the computer/other technology (ie Alice/Sam's phone in the pub scene) or in some way somewhere adjacent to the world of Protocol. So it could, in a dream-logicy eldritch sense, follow that Jonah is able to survive in his own creepy old ass man way, and use his original voice. Obviously, I cannot corroborate this claim in any meaningful way. We have not heard Augustus speak yet, but I think it is a possibility nonetheless.
The fact that Augustus supposedly shows up to read cases aloud significantly less than Chester and Neil could also be a clue. Maybe Jonah is weaker than Jon and Martin due to his injuries, and is therefore unable to materialise as often as Jon and Martin. Maybe the voice that speaks the true cases (because, similarly to how true statements were identified using the tape recorder in TMA, I imagine true cases will be singled out using the text to speech system) is relevant to the case itself - ie, Jonah only speaks when a case is heavily linked to the Eye, etc.
Furthermore, there's the question of who is spying on who and when/why. By this I mean that we hear our perspective switch between devices (the phone, the computer, the security camera during Colin and Sam's interaction, etc), and I believe that this happens because one or more of the 'Errors' (as I am going to refer to them henceforth) is travelling between devices to spy on the characters' conversations. What we hear is dictated by what the Errors, characters who have prior knowledge of the Fears, deem important. This is backed up by the episode's closing scene: Colin's paranoid closing lines. It is clear that Colin believes someone is listening to them, and it is implied that he has made a connection between this and the Errors. What intrigues me is the Errors' motivation for doing this at all. If what they deem important is what we hear, and this is the first that we are hearing, then it seems to me that it is Sam's arrival that has given them cause for concern, or (in Jonah's case) hope (if he is plotting to return, or something, I don't put it past the scheming weasel). So, why are they listening? And how can we really tell if what we are hearing is the spying of Jonah, or of Jon and Martin?
Another thing. Jonny makes a point of letting us know that Alice does not think the work they do is of any significance, or is checked by anyone. She constantly mentions it in passing and is very casual in her attitude towards work. We obviously have the foresight to know this isn't true. The reason I point this out is because of what Sam does when filling out his paperwork: he ticks the 'Response' box, to which Alice responds that it doesn't matter. This could be nothing, it probably is nothing, but I feel like the fact that Sam has ticked the onboarding box of a mysterious department of an already mysertious organisation might come up later...
Yes I know I am jumping to a lot of conclusions, especially where the Errors are concerned. Please take every theory you hear, from me or anyone else, with a grain of salt, this is all speculative. From a writer's perspective, I honestly think it's pretty likely that Chester and Neil aren't actually Jon and Martin, and just their voices taken by the Web or something, but shh I can dream.
Edit: oh my god they changed his name to Norris that is even worse. Jonny and Alex were fr like 'neil is too kind, we need the name to be Chester levels of horrific'
