MY favourite tip that sounds stupid and like it will never work is to lie to yourself. not just in jokes. tell yourself "I'm good at this. I'm a good friend. people like me. life is worth living. there are good things waiting for me." and so on and so on. it feels embarrassing at first. it feels like it's not true. like you're doing something silly that won't work. but I started doing this at pretty much the lowest point in my life and now I say this stuff and BELIEVE IT. and it IS TRUE. self affirmations, no matter how lame you find them, DO WORK.

another thing that really helped me, funnily enough, is being kind to other people. not even to myself!!! seeing other people smile really pulled me out of a shit place. you can use the positive feelings you get from being kind to others to kickstart your own self care!!! it doesn't matter if you're only being kind to feel good about yourself. that's still kindness. and it helps both others and yourself. try it [:

find something to compliment someone for at least 4 times a day. notice the little things about the world that make you happy, and use that to make other people happy.

talk to people. initiate conversation as often as you possibly can. keep your mind busy and you wont have to worry anymore

picture the bad intrusive thoughts in youe head as an edgy 13 year old and tell them to go be emo somewhere else

if someone makes you feel bad most of the time, stop talking to them. making yourself hang out with people who drain you is self harm. stop it.

I got my (now 18-year-old) daughter into Ao3 back in 2021. I taught her she should always comment - even if the fic looks old or abandoned or whatever. She did.

Well - she got this email this morning:

The fic was written in 2014 and essentially abandoned.

Bethy read and reviewed in 2021 (and was actually the only person who had commented at all).

Today in 2025 - the final chapter was posted by the author and this was her reply to Bethy’s comment.
