speaking of ur cass playlist hc...reminds of the time (yesterday) i found 2 playlists randomly on spotify from the same user. one was abt 3 hours of instrumental/classical "dark" & "nostalgic" music. the other almost 11 hours of nothing but hardcore bass/synth/electronic music. just an incredible tightrope act to put on in public. the synth one was also called like "psalms for synth sluts" which is Also incredible

That ends in the winter, as he joins new DC arrival Steve Epting (Captain America) to bring us Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen. The book matches Apex Lex Luthor, a powered up and hyperpredatory version of the classic Superman villain, against the Batman Who Laughs, a Jokerized version of Bruce Wayne from the Dark Multiverse.

Only the Batman Who Laughs has brought some friends. As seen in the pages of Batman/Superman, the Batman Who Laughs has been infecting heroes with his Joker serum and unleashing them on the good guys. The first was Shazam, but they’ll soon be followed by Supergirl, Hawkman, Blue Beetle, Donna Troy, and Commissioner Gordon. We had a chance to talk with Tynion about Hell Arisen and he told us about what to expect from the showdown between these two predators.

James Tynion: It is wild. It's one of those exciting things when you finally reach the point where you can start talking about stuff that you've known existed for like six plus months. Now I can show people what we've been thinking about, what we've been building to. When I've been having little conversations and it's just like, “You'll wait and see” when this specific story comes to a head.

So how far back does this originate? It sounds like the foundation for Hell Arisen is the story that you and Scott [Snyder] have been telling since Dark Nights.

This is something where going all the way back to the original Dark Nights: Metal event. It set two different tracks in motion, and one of those tracks that we've been following very, very intensely in the Justice League title has been the path of Lex Luthor and his awakening and him becoming this disciple of doom, setting out into the world to create this new Legion of Doom to awaken this ancient cosmic goddess Perpetua and transforming himself into this apex predator. Lex Luthor has had a busy year.

But simultaneously there's been this undercurrent that's been running through first in Metal itself, but then in The Batman Who Laughs mini series by Scott Snyder and Jock and more recently in the new Batman/Superman series. That has been the path of what the Batman Who Laughs has been up to. And now we're going to see those two threads come to a head, because what Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen is more than anything is the clash between Lex Luthor and the Batman Who Laughs.

Lex cut his deal with The Batman Who Laughs early on in Justice League right?

Yes.

There was a pretty ominous, "You're going to end up eating this" from Joker to Lex when that happened right?

Yes, exactly. The two stories that I can point to more than any others would be, Justice League #8.That was when Lex Luthor freed The Batman Who Laughs, and The Batman Who Laughs is actually the person who told Luthor the name Perpetua, the name of the cosmic goddess he was trying to awaken for the first time and they had this whole back and forth that really culminated with The Batman Who Laughs saying, "You are going to free me. In order to get what you want from me, and then you just have to accept that I'm going to be out there, under my own machinations and my own plans, and you just have to trust that your plan is better than mine."

So we've seen what The Batman Who Laughs plan is then, and how it's been developing. We saw in The Batman Who Laughs mini series he's developed it in this infection that he was going to try and infect all of Gotham. Now in Batman/Superman we are seeing him infect heroes with this infection, so the Batman Who Laughs infection storyline is going to escalate here. But then we've also seen Luthor's plan of literally his whole year of the villain plan and all the offers he made for the different villains in the DC Universe.

It's very exciting that we've had these two parallel threads. I remember the first time we were writing down on a big white board all of the different story threads and we literally drew an arrow between two of the threads together and we just wrote "Ha." That's what Hell Arisen comes from is just the word "Ha.". That was the birth of this story and this is really the story that kicks this whole saga we've been telling into the next sphere.

So it looks like Luthor is going up against The Batman Who Laughs who created his own Justice League and the Dark Multiverse is fighting against their own potential destruction?

It's very difficult to talk about the specifics because it involves both the ending of this arc of Batman/Superman and this arc of Justice League, "The Justice-Doom War." Literally both of those stories end on the same day that Hell Arisen #1 comes out and both of them tie directly into that issue.

It's one of those things where we are seeing the infected Justice League ascended, we are seeing Batman Who Laughs has this whole big crazy plan and Lex Luthor needs to stop it. It is basically a battle of the minds of these two exceptionally dangerous, exceptionally smart beings. Batman Who Laughs is the Batman of his world, he is as smart as Batman has ever been without having any morals holding him back and then Lex Luthor is Lex Luthor, he's the smartest human being that has ever lived and he has just enhanced his powers and his abilities tenfold. So, it is these two incredibly smart beings in a very destructive chess match and the winner gets the world.

Lex has been a Superman stand in at least, fairly recently and in a lot of ways he's the same kind of dark reflection of Superman that the Batman Who Laughs is of Batman, is that Superman/Batman dichotomy something that you're playing with in the story also?

Absolutely, they are meant to be two sides of the same coin in the same way that Batman and Superman are, but they are two sides of a very messed up coin.

Do the Tales from the Dark Multiverse stories fit in with this or are those just fun side examinations of the Dark Multiverse too?

Those stand a bit more on their own, but I think it is telling that we are ramping up our explorations of the Dark Multiverse around this time as all of these big stories are coming to a head. What that is telling us I can't reveal yet, but you're all going to have to wait and see.

Is it fair to say that this is the biggest thing you've taken on in your time at DC?

It is the biggest thing I have taken on aside from things I cannot talk about yet. This is a very big story. It is a story that is still a part of this larger narrative that we have been telling going back to Justice League, this is something that we had sketched out this big story machine, and that story machine is about to come to a head. This is the moment that all of the threads converge and then what this story could lead to I think, is going to be something incredible.

Right now, this is where the two separate threads that we've been playing with for the last almost two years, will clash together in the biggest way possible, with beautiful art by Steve Epting.

How did you guys land Epting, and is there anything specific that you're doing in the book to tailor it to his strengths?

I am definitely tailoring it to his strengths. In terms of landing him it was something where they had been talking to Steve about a couple of projects and this one came up and it was one of those things where once we had him nailed down on this title, it definitely started affecting how I saw this played out.

What I think Steve Epting does best is he can build this tension. That's why he does spy thrillers really really well and this is a different sort of thriller. This is a very dangerous horror thriller. We are seeing a horrifying infection starting to spread in the DC Universe, we are seeing all of these different monstrous figures going to war with each other and that war is still happening in the shadows. Everyone else on earth are still not fully aware what they're up to against each other and it is that kind of, coming at it from a secretive angle. I have a few scenes in mind bit later in the arc that I am very excited for Steve to draw.

What about Hell Arisen is the most exciting to you? And what is the most intimidating?

Honestly the answer to both is a single thing, which is the fact that these are the two smartest characters in DC Universe Earth, when the two of them are standing there they are two of the smartest characters that exist. To have them try and outfox each other is a very very difficult thing as a writer. It's the same reason that I know people talk about having trouble writing Riddler stories, because you have to out-think Batman and then you have to have Batman out think someone who just out thunk Batman.

We are seeing this battle between these two evil geniuses who do not care about the damage that they leave in the world behind them, but it means that we get to go a little bit mad scientist with it and they are both going to make some horrific moves as they move forward. This is the culmination of these stories, so I am really excited.

You've got a really strong pedigree in horror comics, especially in your creator-owned works. How has your creator-owned horror stuff influence the work you're doing on Hell Arisen?

Honestly it has kind of helped set my priorities back in horror. I've been writing Justice League Dark for the last year which definitely plays with horror and I hope is genuinely scary in some places. It also is a different type of horror, Justice League Dark is more homage to the type of horror comic that DC was doing in the '70s and '80s and me playing with some of those tropes, and trying to push some of them to be more modern and scary, but it's still of that type of thing. My main priority is to tell a genuinely horrifying story in the present and so I am trying to take those priorities in.

Soooo...Jason Momoa told a little kid that Superman wasn't in Justice League because he was dead, DC is making a Superman Year One comic with Frank Miller as the author, they're making a two-part animated movie based on "the Death and Return of Superman," and rumors are flying around that Supergirl is going to be in Justice League. Oh, and the Justice League trailer dropped. Your thoughts?

That’s a lot to take it. Let’s start with the big one. New Justice League trailer!

Sorry guys, still don’t like it. Granted, it doesn’t look as bad as the previous trailer made it look, but it still looks massively underwhelming. Hell, the only character presented I even like is Wonder Woman, because she’s the only one who’s been established.

Well, established in a good movie, at least.

The rest consist of a Batman who belongs behind bars just as much as any of his villains and three other characters we’re meeting for the first time fighting a villain that nobody gives a shit about, which could be forgiven if the characters were interesting but again Batman’s an asshole and we don’t know anything about Aquaman, Flash, or Cyborg yet. And am I the only one who cringed at Cyborg’s line? Not the line itself, but the flat, robotic delivery. Good god, they took one of the most expressive and emotional live-wires in comic book history and turned him into Arnold from Terminator 2, but without the charm and charisma.

I’m also not looking forward the role the Amazons play, which appears to be them being in the movie for the sole purpose of Steppenwolf to kill/mop the floor with them. Yeah, take the place and characters everybody who watched Wonder Woman fell in love with and just wipe them off the face of the Earth in their second appearance. No way there’s going to be any backlash from that!

Honestly, I could write an essay’s worth of things in the trailer that irked me, but topping that list are these lines from Batman.

“Superman was a beacon for the world. He didn’t just save people, he made them see the best parts of themselves.”

Let’s forget for a moment that Superman has only been in two DCEU movies and you can count on one hand how many times he was shown in a heroic light. Let’s forget for a moment that Man of Steel and especially Batman v Superman spent more time hammering into audiences skulls that more people in this world are afraid of Superman than there are people who see him as a hero. And let’s forget for a moment that this Superman has spent more time feeling sorry for himself than he ever did being the symbol of hope the movies tried and failed miserably building him up to be.

Let’s instead take into account that these lines are coming from Batman. Oh yeah, Superman totally brought out the best in people. That’s why after the disaster in Metropolis, you took a deep breath, composed yourself, and reached out to him to see what he was really about before jumping to conclusions and-oh wait, no you didn’t, you obsessed over him for over a year and decided to straight-up murder his ass, you fucking hypocrite!

Seriously, what the fuck, WB? You spend two whole movies shitting on Superman, the people who love him, and his legacy, and now you’re trying to save face by saying that he brought out the best in people when you’ve only shown the BAD things that happened because he exists? Fuck off. No, seriously, fuck right off. You have to EARN that shit, which you fucking didn’t because you killed Superman before anybody could connect with him and threw the entirety of “The Death and Return of Superman” right under the bus in the last 20 minutes of a Batman movie! I honestly don’t know what’s worse. That Batman is being portrayed as a stupid and hypocritical murderous asshole, or that said stupid and hypocritical murderous asshole is leading the team that Superman is supposed to be the leader to!

Ugh, FUCK everything! But let’s move on, shall we? Frank Miller is writing Superman: Year One.

The very idea of Frank Miller writing any solo-Superman story makes my skin crawl. The fact that the same guy who turned Superman into Ronald Reagan’s personal attack dog who can’t read and raped Wonder Woman is retelling Superman’s origin story? Ugh. Just thinking about that makes me feel like I need to jump into a swimming pool filled with bleach and then get buried up to my neck in rock salt!

Let’s all just put aside that Frank Miller is a racist and misogynist scumbag who hasn’t written anything good since Robocop vs the Terminator. Let’s instead take into account that the man has been writing comic books for 40 years now and has written Superman several times, and every time he’s portrayed him as stupid, boorish, and incompetent while going out of his way to have Batman humiliate him in some way, shape, or form. Yes, I know, Miller has said that he actually likes Superman and only wrote him that way because the story was from Batman’s perspective and that he actually regrets writing him as a government tool, yeah, I don’t fucking believe him. He’s had dozens if not hundreds of opportunities to show Superman in a positive light and he’s never done it. He’s never done it before, so why would he now? The only time Superman has ever been portrayed with any semblance of who he actually is in a Frank Miller work was in Dark Knight III: the Master Race…you know, the one book in the series that Frank Miller didn’t write! Oh, but he wants to write part IV, so great, he’ll get to shit on Superman one more time before he either retires or his diseased liver and STD-ridden body do him in. “Oh, but Katie, he has cancer!” So? He’s still an asshole!

Well, that was grim. Let’s talk a little bit about Jason Mamoa telling a little kid that Superman was dead.

Okay, in the interest of fairness, I don’t think Mamoa had any malicious intent. I’m sure he was just caught up in the moment and wasn’t thinking straight, especially when he apologized to the same kid during an autograph signing that followed the panel. It was still a dick move on his part, but whether or not he gave it some thought, his fellow cast members told him “dude, that’s a little kid,” or his PR guy said “Look Mamoa, Warner has done a fine job of alienating Superman fans all on their own, they don’t need you helping. Now if you want to shrug off being typecast as an uncouth barbarian you’d better stop acting like one and say you’re sorry!” I’m glad he realized it was a dick move and took it back. I’m sure the fact that WB still wants to convince us that Superman is really dead wasn’t helping either. Speaking of which…

The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen are getting animated adaptations.

I have very mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, this was one of the stories I said deserved a faithful animated adaptation. Yes, some aspects don’t hold up anymore, but they can be worked around. This is also not the first time the story was adapted, as “Superman: Doomsday” was what kicked off the string of animated DC movies. But it was also very watered down and may as well have been called “Superman: the Clone Saga.” So the fact that they’re making a two-part animated adaptation should be good news…

Having said that, let’s get real. If they genuinely wanted to make a faithful adaptation of ‘The Death of Superman,’ they would have already. I can’t shake the feeling that the only reason it’s even being made is because Warner and DC realize that shoe-horning Doomsday into the end of BvS only succeeded in alienating Superman fans and they need to save face, not helped by the fact that the last animated solo-Superman movie they made, Superman Unbound, came out in 2013. Everything else since then has been either a Justice League movie or a Batman movie. Oh sure, Superman was in some of them, but the only one where he had anything resembling a leading role was in Justice League: Gods and Monsters…the alternate universe story where Wonder Woman is from space, Batman is a vampire, and Superman is the son of General Zod and his capsule lands on the US/Mexico border right as some refugees are crossing because apparently the writers felt that Superman being an alien just wasn’t quite on the nose enough.

Now I know what you might be thinking. “Okay, so maybe they didn’t make it as soon as you would have liked, but they’re making it anyway so what’s the problem?” The problem is the possibility that they’re making this not because they want to or feel that it’s a story worth adapting, but again just so they can save face for those of us Superman fans who felt alienated at the conclusion of Batman v Superman where the entirety of the story was boiled down to “Lex Zuckerburg creates Nuclear Man 2.0 and Superman gets stabbed to death at the end.” And a movie that nobody wants to make tends to be a movie that nobody wants to see.

That’s to say nothing of the fact that DC animated movies…well, they just haven’t been very good lately. Ever since their Flashpoint film, the movies have ranged from okay to outright bad. Justice League: War sucked, Son of Batman was obnoxious, Assault on Arkham was good but not great, Throne of Atlantis was a snooze-fest, Batman vs Robin sucked, Gods and Monsters was okay, Batman: Bad Blood had a good movie in it that was bogged down by the writers putting Batwoman’s story on the back-burner and insisting Dick and Damian arguing had to be on the forefront, Justice League vs Teen Titans could have been good if they didn’t put the least-interesting character Damian Wayne center-stage for no goddamn reason, Justice League Dark was hot garbage, Judas Contract was lame, and the less said about The Killing Joke the better.

In short…I hope it’s good, but given previous movies and the circumstance, I’m not holding my breath.

EDIT: Forgot about Supergirl apparently appearing in Justice League. I hope she kicks Batman’s ass. It’s long overdue somebody took Batman down a peg and I can think of worse motivations than “You got my cousin and only other member of my race killed,” as well as providing catharsis for Superman fans given he landed a grand total of two fucking punches in the title fight of Batman v Superman. Other than that, I don’t really care. Her inclusion can’t make the movie anymore troubled than it already is.

DC Entertainment responds to turmoil over sexual harassment claims

In response to a recent outcry from fans and comics creators, DC Entertainment has released a statement addressing allegations of sexual harassment.

Published in Comic Book Resources(although not on DC’s own website or social media pages), the statement promises that DC will expand employee training and review policies regarding workplace discrimination.

DC Entertainment strives to foster a culture of inclusion, fairness and respect. While we cannot comment on specific personnel matters, DC takes allegations of discrimination and harassment very seriously, promptly investigates reports of misconduct and disciplines those who violate our standards and policies.

While the statement speaks in general terms, most people are interpreting it as a response to allegations about Eddie Berganza, a senior editor at DC.

For the past few months, Berganza has been the subject of unconfirmed rumors about a quarantine at the publishers Superman office, wherein DC allegedly avoided hiring women to avoid further sexual harassment incidents with a certain editor. In late April, a number of comics reporters and fans named Berganza as the editor in question, with writer/editor Janelle Asselin saying that she left DC due to the publishers lack of interest in holding him accountable for inappropriate behavior.

Yes, I was one of many who reported Eddie Berganza’s behavior in 2011. I left DC because they promoted him anyway.

Back in 2012, the comics site Bleeding Cool suggested that Berganza was demoted from executive editor to group editor after a series of sexual harassment claims, specifying one incident that allegedly took place at WonderCon 2012 in front of witnesses. The idea of a Superman office quarantine was brought into the public eye in September 2015, ina blog post from comics writer Alex de Campi. However, what sparked the most recent debate was something seemingly unrelated to Berganza: DCs decision to “eliminate the job of popular Vertigo editor Shelly Bond.

Vertigo is the adult-oriented imprint that launched cult comics likeSandman,Preacher, and Y: The Last Man. Bond had worked there since the 90s and was promoted to CEO in 2013. It was unclear why she was let go when DC announced it was restructuring Vertigo last month, and the comics community wanted answers. Why was she leaving while DC continued to employ a man who, in the words of Alex de Campi, had multiple incidents on his HR file?”

Recently I ended up turning down a Supergirl job partly because I was nervous about working in proximity to Eddie Berganza.

As reported by comics blog The Outhousers, this quickly snowballed into a public discussion about sexism and discrimination in comics publishing. One contribution wasa blog postfrom artist Katie Jones, stating, “I was sexually harassed and almost raped by a Senior Art Director from DC Entertainment,” describing an incident at San Diego Comic-Con.

After three weeks of back-and-forth on social media, DC’s only official response is its statement to Comic Book Resources, published on a Friday afternoon. Berganza, who still works at DC Comics, has not answered any requests for comment.

Let me make this unequivocal: Comics has a sexual harassment problem. It needs to stop. Men need to stand with female creators in support.

As comics fans would be quick to point out, this isnt an isolated case, and it would be inaccurate and unfair to single out DC when similar things have happened at other major publishers.

Last October, the former editor-in-chief of Dark Horse Comics, Scott Allie, issued a public apology for biting and groping a writer during a party at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). The writer in question, Joe Harris, described the incident to Janelle Asselin at Graphic Policy, but the accusations didnt stop there. Graphic Policys report also cites several anonymous sources at Dark Horse, characterizing Allies behavior as threatening and volatile. One source claimed that he was nicknamed Bitey the Clown due to his habit of biting people while drunk. Several said that they reported his behavior through official channels and were assured that the problem was being investigated.

Brendan H. Wrightan editor who worked at Dark Horse for seven years before leaving last Septembertweeted that Dark Horse “worked to hush up” the incident at SDCC, despite other employees demanding that Allie be fired.

Just like Berganza, Allie was repeatedly promoted after bad behavior, including after last year’s SDCC.

After Allie apologized for his conduct towards Harris last year, Dark Horse president Mike Richardson gave an extensive statement to The Beat, championing his own open-door policy with employees. While he applauded Asselins desire to expose sexual harassment in the industry, he added that no one here has ever turned a ‘blind eye’ to these behaviors, not in this case, not in any case.

The SDCC incident came to light less than a month after Allie was reassignedfrom editor-in-chief to executive senior editor. Its unclear whether this change was linked with harassment allegations, but Allie still holds an editorial role at Dark Horse and writes the ongoing comic Abe Sapien.

In 2013, Brian Wood (who has worked for DC, Marvel, Image, and Dark Horse, and is particularly well known for his original series DMZ) was accused of sexual harassment at SDCC. Artist Tess Fowler said that he feigned interest in her career before trying to get her to join him in his hotel room. Wood responded with a statement saying he had simply made a pass at Fowler, and that there was never a promise of quid pro quo.” He characterized the incident as a misunderstanding, adding, “I think the larger issues of abuse in the comics industry are genuine and I share everyones concerns.” (After naming Wood, Fowler tweeted, when I have 3 women in my inbox in TEARS as they’re typing over the same guy? Yeah, screw being nice.)

Comics is small so most of these sources don’t even want to be anonymous because it can be traced backed to them

Writer G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel) wrote at the time, Nearly every other woman Ive met in the industry seems to have horror stories about creepy run-ins with male colleagues and creators.

Shortly after, former DC editor Heidi MacDonald published an article delving into why comics publishing had such an entrenched problem with sexual harassment. Along with her examination of victim-blaming, sexism, and power imbalances in the industry, one underlying point stands out: Before Fowler mentioned Wood by name, MacDonald wrote, It was pretty easy to figure out who she was talking about.

Examples like Allie and Berganza are in the minority because they weren’t just called out by name; they were called out by multiple people in respected positions in the community. In Allie’s case, he actually made a public apology. Most of the time, these allegations remain anonymous, couched in terms of “blind item” gossip and subtweets. Women in the industry may share private warnings about “known” harassers, but it’s rare for industry employees to come forward and name names.

I haven’t bought a DC title since the news story broke and don’t intend to until @DCComics gets their act together with how they treat women

Working in comics is a precarious career. The medium is collaborative, people spend years (if not entire careers) as low-wage freelancers, and most of the steady jobs are at a small handful of companies. Those who have discussed abuse also raise concerns about being ostracized for speaking up. That’s why many female writers and artists have said they rely on word-of-mouth warnings, feeling unable to trust publishers to effectively hold harassers accountable.

Comics watchdogs and reporters, however, have been pursuing the harassment issue for years, and DC Comics most recent statement, though unsatisfying to many, indicates the company is aware its an issue readers are closely watching.
