my hoffstrahmdon thoughts tend to be various canon divergence type AUs for hoffdon and hoffstrahm mixed together.

i like to think Hoffman had to take care of Lawrence when he was still very injured and delirious while John and Mandy were away in X. i also like to think Hoffman did wonders for Lawrence's gay awakening, since Lawrence is the most closeted gay man to ever live. to me. Hoffman, experienced in all things homo, is also definitely aware Lawrence is into him before Lawrence is even aware of it. Which is knowledge he uses to fuck with Lawrence as much as possible.

(if they had a fling or two in one of those warehouses then that's between them and whatever cameras John had set up in there.)

ultimately, i think they're two very fucked up guys wrecked with grief who grow to understand each other just a little bit, which leads to them also getting the slightest bit attached, despite their best efforts not to. a lot of very mixed feelings about each other all around.

as for the Strahm part, i think it'd be incredibly funny to mix Lawrence into the classic "Strahm swallows his morals and runs away with Hoffman to play house" type situation. hoffstrahm are like 8 months into living together peacefully in some random little town after Hoffman got his face ripped open and Lawrence shows up unannounced while Hoffman's home alone. Strahm comes back and walks in on them mid argument. immediately connects the dots as to why That One Guy from That One Jigsaw Trap is suddenly in his living room:

i was thinking about this all day im gonna hella ramble too much

to reiterate and expand on what i kinda said in that post's tags: im genuinely cautious when it comes to the canonicity of deleted scenes and script changes for most things because, well, things dont get included in the final product for a reason sometimes.

trust me i know about deleted scenes. ive had months of work erased from existence because of deleted scenes. and sometimes it really was for the best

and im equally if not more skeptical of things like.. lore coming from outside sources. if its not in the original media, its questionable. film novelizations, game adaptions, spin-off comics, all that stuff is usually written by some third party with little to no input from the real writers. unless it gets some serious seal of approval and that shit actually gets referenced in the next film, then im like "ok im listening." Otherwise, i shrug it all off as maybe-canon side adventures until contradicted

sometimessss those nuggets of lore or characterization from deleted scenes/iffy canon off-shoot material are sick af so we just kind of adopt it anyway!!! we all do it!!!

Strahm being a butthead just interrupting Perez and Hoffman having a nice little talk because he hates his ass so much

Hoffman being more of the annoying little flirt that i know he is in my heart

Perez being charmed by him, the two of them having a cute little bonding moment as acquaintances for a moment there, and then STRAHM AGAIN being a butthead

i love them. i LOVE THEM

its very important to me that Perez kind of liked Hoffman. it makes his betrayal hurt so much more

this whole moment. i love this. ough. as much as i loved this scene already, in my head i pretend the scene played out like this....

also, i cant list off everything because theres so much its a little depressing, but there's a lot going on in the Saw 3D script that is tragically cool. they really leaned into Hoffman going off the deep end and i enjoyed that. and how grisly his scar was originally supposed to be, and the symbolism with his declining mental state. and his interactions with Lawrence being a little more fleshed out. its just kind of neat. i think the film would have been a bit stronger if they stuck closer to a few of their earlier ideas

edit: OH MY GOD HOW CAN I FORGET ABOUT DELETED FILMED SCENES LIKE THE ROCKSTAR MOMENT. THAT HAPPENED OK U CANNOT TELL ME OTHERWISE. and amanda is 100% haunted by what she did to Adam

and as for spin-offs that are absolutely not canon, this description of Hoffman from the video game from Tapp's POV is intriguing.

i love annoying and weird colleague Hoffman but i also really enjoy the idea of shy and weird colleague Hoffman.

also, boring cop Hoffman who wont bend the rules? that is so much more interesting than the hashtag brutality moment.

ohmygod i literally just made an account on letterboxd bc i watched saw (2004) and loved it so much and ur interview was so inspiring to me and ive been on an absolute craze trying to reblog like every single saw post on tumblr and i somehow found your account what the heck?!!?!?! ur art is AMAZING and i absolutely love ur takes on saw as a franchise and its significance to the queer community. i hope to be as knowledgeable of this franchise as you are one day despite me only being a baby saw fan!!

i had a quick question; i found on the saw heritage post blog that they thought leigh/james/someone else confirmed that saw (2004) did not actually occur the day before 9/11 despite the phone given to them being set to that date. however, when i asked them if they knew where this source was from (bc im so curious!!! i want to know everything!!!!!!) but neither they nor i could find the actual source for that so i was wondering if maybe u knew??? just curious :3

regardless ty for taking the time to read this and dedicating so much time to this fandom!! i love that horror fans like you exist in a fandom that i previously thought would be weird and slightly disturbed film bros (i had a lot of incorrect preconceived notions about saw that have been quickly resolved i promise)

thank you!! im glad that people feel the same way about it as i do but even if people thought i was some crazy transexual making everyone else woke and pronouns, i wouldnt care. the story, especially lawrences but adams as well, really resonates with me as a trans person for so so many reasons, more than i listed in the interview. to me, i cant read his character without filling in the gaps with trans subtext. it not only explains but also enriches the personal experiences of these characters as well as their dynamics with each other. theyre both characters that are defined primarily by how theyre seen by other people, themselves, and eventually each other. the narrative is soooo focused on perception and masks and who u truly are, i find it hard to separate any kind of queer theory from that.

as for the 9/11 question thats such a dumbass pet peeve of mine. its one of the things that makes me shout UMMMM ACTUALLY at the top of my lungs. my blood pressure sours to inhuman levels when someone confidently says the movie takes place not just in 2001 but the day before 9/11. not because of some interview or confirmation from any of the crew because my knowledge of old fandom history is incredibly spotty. old sites and interviews r a mystery to me for the most part BUT! the reason it is for sure not before 9/11 is because during the flashback of pauls trap (during lawrences monologue about jigsaw) kerry tapp and sing are all at the scene with other officers and i believe its kerry who holds up an evidence bag thats labeled 2004. the scene takes place 5 months before the events of saw 1 so its not possible that it takes place 3 years before that. it just seemed like a funny (but insanely bold considering how 9/11 was only 3 years before) joke and easter egg for people to catch on to, not actual lore meant to be taken seriously.

if u want to look for the interview, i would honestly just listen to the commentary tracks bc it mightve been said there. i know in the one with leigh, james, and cary they discuss plot holes fans complained about, questions fans had online, the fanfic they read (briefly LOL). ive only seen that one (and once) but theres at least 2 other commentary tracks with different people that i havent gotten around to for fear of like. completing saw? idk i cant bring myself to watch all of the commentary tracks but theres a chance they discuss it there! i can only speculate on the reason, all i know is that saw 2004 takes place in 2004 based on actual evidence from the media itself

Oliver never understood why Hoffman became a cop in the first place. Not that he didn't fit the bill as a mean brute, but because of his hatred for authority figures. The youngest apprentice knew all too well how Hoffman felt about people in positions of power.

A sneer twitched its way onto his face at the thought, it was one of Oliver's favorite hypocrisies about the man.

Hoffman would never ever admit this, probably not even to himself, but he wanted to be owned.

Being John's apprentice maybe started out as blackmail, but he grew to like it frighteningly fast, why else would he so willingly carry on the Jigsaw legacy after John's death?

Oliver didn't need to ask Mark directly to know this, he had seen it. He'd witnessed the irrefutable truth that Hoffman was happiest when taking orders, and that he also fucking hated it.

Oliver couldn't stop the shiver running down his spine as he thought about all the times he'd seen his theory proven. Mark doing whatever John would say while building traps, so trusting and almost docile under the watch of the older man. The way he would feign annoyance as Amanda guided his sweating hand when doing mechanical maintenance, or bite his lip to hold back moans when Lawrence roughly treated his various injuries. Mark whimpering into Oliver's palm as he tied him into the ice cube trap.

The man was completely different when dominated, everything about his body gave him away. From the sloping shoulders to his dilated eyes, it was obvious that he craved the submission, but something in his brain just wouldn't let him give in.

So he fought it, mindlessly and relentlessly, trying to force himself into a dominant persona. Clawing his way to the top of his precinct, taking on the Jigsaw moniker, controlling every aspect of how the world saw both sides of his persona.

But neither of them was really true.

Mark Hoffman was a tool. Not just in the colloquial sense, which he absolutely could be sometimes, but the literal meaning. At his best when carrying out the orders of the one who wielded him.

Like a feral dog, Hoffman craved to be domesticated, taken care of, and controlled; yet he still fought mindlessly to hold onto those wild instincts.

Oliver wanted nothing more than to beat it out of him in the most literal way possible.

i will do you one better and give you both. my three best beloveds:

sometimes having amanda around isn't good for adam, because even if they're close now, she was still his kidnapper and attacker and it's hard to separate that from the present when he's having an episode. so she makes herself scarce, but when adam is doing better they snuggle on the couch together and amanda whispers that she's sorry (because she is, she regrets hurting adam more than she regrets hurting most), and adam's like. i know. it's not quite forgiveness but he loves her and he understands, and that's more than enough.

adam and lawrence are often all over each other in some capacity but i do think hand touching is a big thing for them specifically (something about how they thought the first time they touched would also be their last). they're always holding hands or one of them is resting his hand on the other's thigh/neck/shoulder/whatever or lawrence is kissing adam's fingertips. it helps ground them both and they both just...crave any kind of normal romance and domesticity given how abnormal the rest of their life is.

adam is sometimes (often) annoying just for the hell of it and lawrence likes to pretend he’s not stupidly endeared by it and adam will just be like you LOVE me you SAVED me you share a bed with me every night i’m your baby and your sweetheart and your honey and-- while kissing all over his face and lawrence pretends not to be so stupidly endeared by it but he is.

amanda takes john’s death the hardest and even though adam is secretly glad the old fraud is dead, he lets mandy cry on his shoulder and she smokes through an entire pack of his cigarettes and kisses her head and lets her sleep with him and lawrence that night in one huge cuddle pile.

i've said before that adam is the one with the garden at casa de jigsquad, and to help it thrive but also to quell amanda's issues around food being wasted, he's very diligent about making compost from all the scraps. they briefly considered getting a chicken but they took one look at bastard eating a pigeon alive and decided not to risk it.

adam has generally gone through life thinking that he's stupid and won't ever accomplish much. plenty of people have told him as much, and he's well aware that high school dropout slash freelance photographer slash unwilling serial killer isn't the thing that looks good on a resume. so he's down on himself about it a lot, but lawrence takes his hand and is like. hey. stop that. you're a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for, adam. you could go back to school, you know. get your GED, and college if you wanted. or you could take your photography to the next level, or find a new avenue that you want to pursue. you have a lot to offer the world. and adam doesn't really know what to say at first, because if it was anyone else it'd feel like an insult or mockery, because adam isn't actually capable of any of that. but this is lawrence. and well. lawrence would't lie to him.

sometimes lawrence gets upset about his amputation, thinks his stump looks ugly and feels embarrassed about having to put on his prosthetic and use the cane. he’s been raised to believe he’s only worthy if he’s perfect (or appears perfect and keeps everything else hidden), and the amputated foot makes him feel anything but. he doesn’t like sharing his own pain, isn’t used to it and thinks adam’s is more valid, but adam is always able to pry it out of him. holds lawrence close and reassures him that he’s worthy of so much even if he isn’t always perfect, and he’s not ruined because he’s now disabled, and the reason why he lost it is because he had to save his family. adam doesn’t want him to feel any shame in that

adam and amanda like to go on long drives together. they don't ever have a destination in mind, and sometimes they don't even talk or listen to music. just being in each other's company is enough. wherever they end up, they'll end up together.

okay. fine. here's one nsfw one: people obviously make a lot of assumptions about adam and lawrence’s relationship (dishevelled younger man/wealthy older man) and even though they are genuinely together and in love. they both kind of get off on the idea of playing into those assumptions. like they go to a fancy hotel for a weekend and do weird roleplay surrounding the idea that they’re having an illicit affair and adam is just a toy lawrence uses to get his dick wet and forget about his marital problems for the night. it's a little weird but they're happy and not hurting anyone. so.

one day, adam and lawrence are cuddling on the couch, playing with each other's hands, and lawrenceslips a ring onto adam's finger. and adam freezes and stares at lawrence who kisses his forehead and says that can signify whatever you want. but i need you to know that...you're it for me. you're my future. whatever you want, i'm willing to offer it to you. i love you, adam. you're my life. and adam starts laughing and crying at the same time and pins lawrence down on the couch to kiss him and says yes yes i'll marry you the ring means we're engaged yes yes i'll become your trophy wife you ridiculous old man and it'll dawn on him as lawrence grins and kisses him back, that maybe, there's a way out of this. a happy life for them away from the jigsaw legacy. whatever he wants, lawrence is all in. forever.

HELPPPPP THIS IS SO FUNNY ... (but ok... I'll give my two cents on it and I'll try my best to answer your questions with clarity)

i wouldn't say that it's 'torture horror' (as many critics like to call it), it's more of a horror soap opera? there is actual lore that is much more important than the gory traps... the traps get more bloody from saw 3 onwards imo

but after (2023) saw x's release, i don't think it's fair to simply downplay the entire series as a 'soap opera' ; nor is it actually gay. it's just 'gay' because of the fanart and fanfics lol

the first saw movie has the least amount of gore and is by far the most 'queer-coded' movie to the saw fans because it features the fan favourite characters - lawrence gordon and adam stanheight. 90% of the fandom heavily ships the two.

other 'gay people' in question would be amanda young and lynn denlon from saw 3 (loads of folks love to call them toxic yuri) + saw 4-5 would feature another one of the popular saw slash ships - mark hoffman and peter strahm (aka saw toxic yaoi) ; the other ships are for you to discover..

do you have to watch it in order? I strongly recommend so. this is because saw 1-7 has a continuous storyline. spiral, and jigsaw is entirely optional for you. (unless you want more gay ships, then go watch spiral for zeke banks/william schenk content).

if you really, really just only want to look at the 'gay people', then watch saw 1, 3, 4 and 5. (maybe spiral if u want)

i personally encourage you to watch everything though, for the lore.

honestly I think it might just be i saw sparks! I love this one, I remember I wrote this in 2 writing sessions, completely focused on the task at hand. I just think the ambiance I created there is rly good and the events just put a smile on my face. I swear, I love writing Tim and Rhys so incredibly in love 💖

💖 What made you start writing?

funny story, actually! I wrote "fanfics" ever since I was a small child but there were more stories I created on my own and forced my sister to write them down when I myself couldn't read haha I started writing some more fics from 2011 but it was on and off back then. I think back in 2017 when I was still going through a terrible friend breakup that sucked away all my want to write, I went on a con and talked with some guy and just kinda said that I write fics in Polish. he told me "if u wanna make it big, u gotta start writing in English". fastforward 2018 and it's my decision, I shall start writing fics in English, it's abt time, nothing to be scared of. I also wanted to "be the change u want to see in the world" and if there are no Normaler fics by god, I'll write them myself. and well, ever since I can't imagine my life without writing :3

the fact that I finished it! I might like things less and more and u know what they say abt hindsight but honestly, when I finish a fic it already is so much for me to be happy abt that yeS I did manage to create it and pour my thoughts into words. hearing commenters say what they liked, noticed and all is also a huge boost!

I feel like a lot of my fics happen at night? maybe being a night owl myself, I just think conversations at night fit harder. I love writing fight scenes so I sneak them whenever I can, same with tending wounds I loooove writing characters tending each other's wounds. Y/N woke up the next morning heavy in sleep from a long week. Her mom had an extra early shift this weekend so Y/N took her car and headed down to a local farmers market to do some searching.

“And $3.89 is your change Miss, have a lovely morning.” The farmer said handing her a bag of fresh strawberries. She smiled and walked away, and turned right into the culture section of the Farmers Market. She walked towards the Greek booth and started exploring. “I should bring Hawk here later.” Y/N thought.

Mom:Hey babes working overnight love you <3

Y/N: love you too

Y/N sighed with the thought of another night alone. Her mom often works late nights and her dad wasn’t in the picture.

Y/N’s friend: Hey do you wanna hang tonight?

Y/N: Sure I’ll call u later.

Y/N headed to the dojo where Hawk trained. She pulled in front and walked around to the back where students were sitting on the grass in their respective circles talking and that’s when she saw the stiff, red spikes and walked over to him. Y/N tapped on his shoulder and he spun around with confusion after seeing the girl in an unusual habitat.

“Y/N? What are you doing here? Are you stalking me?” Hawk asked. The last line was obviously sarcasm but she couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “No dingus you left your cell at my house last night, pretty counterproductive for you to get my number and leave your phone, or was that your plan all along?” Y/N smirked at her comment but keeping her eyes locked on Hawk, who started to turn as red as his mohawk. He hit his chest pretending to be wounded by her words. “Dang, you caught me. But seriously thank you I was not looking forward to telling my mom I lost my phone.” Hawk chuckled which caused Y/N to join in.

“Hawk! Whatcha doing? Thought you said you wanted to do a quick spar with me during lunch?” A blonde man yelled at him walking over. Y/N recognized him as THE Johnny Lawrence.

“Yeah fangirls aren’t allowed during practice.” He said. Y/N eyes widened at the horror of being “Hawks fangirl”, The horror on Hawks face as well almost made her burst into laughter.

“N-No I, She, we no.” They both tried to explain to Johnny who was more confused then the time Miguel was explaining the difference between Pansexuality and Bisexuality to him. Y/N took a deep breath and finally explained the situation. “Okay cool, so Hawk sparring or no? Because there’s a Coors and a bologna sandwich with my name on it.” Sensei Lawrence asked, crossing his arms.

“Could we do it tomorrow? I have to talk to Y/N about this proj- yeah not sure what that has to do with Karate but don’t bore the girl to death.” Johnny cut in then turned and walked into the dojo.

“I like your Sensei, might have to take up some Karate myself maybe.” Y/N joked. Hawk scoffed pretending to be offended. “I give excellent lessons you know.” He told her.

“Anyways would you have time after Karate to work the project?” She asked. “Sure we’re done in another hour, I could meet you there.” Hawk suggested. Y/N agreed and waved goodbye.

Y/N headed home to put her bags away. Texting with her friends and looking at other places to look for Ancient Greece project.

“Fuck.” She muttered looking down at her shirt that had at stain on it. She ran upstairs to change.

“Wow Y/N, you sure know how to pick ‘em!” Hawk yelled walking up to her as she stood crossing her arms in front of the closed thrift store.

“I could’ve sworn they were open today.” Y/N muttered. Hawk chuckled at her disappointment.

“Okay if we hurry we could go to the farmers market, the Greek booth is literally so cool!” She beamed “did you drive here?” She asked. Hawk shook his head and picked up his skateboard. He picked his board and walked towards her car. They drove to the farmers market and headed to the Greek booth.

They found some supplies and went back to Y/N’s house to work on the project.

“Um the living room is a little cluttered. We can go up to my room.” She said bringing Hawk up the stairs.

“You smoke?” Hawk asked looking over on Y/N’s desk seeing the baggie of weed and fruit scented rolling papers. He raised an eyebrow in curiosity. “Yes but it’s like a blend with flowers and also medical, for anxiety.” She told him.

They worked on their presentation for a while, finally getting tired of the research. Y/N, who was sitting on her bed shut her laptop and sighed. “Do you wanna order food?” She asked. Hawk nodded his head. They decided on pizza.

“I gotta say, I thought a plain cheese pizza would be a bad idea but, you have good taste.” Y/N sighed wiping her mouth and hands looking over at Hawk. “What did I say? Impeccable taste right here.” Hawk said leaning his head back to look at Y/N upside down while pointing to himself.

“Wanna smoke?” She asked with a newfound smile on her face. Jumping up and grabbing her rolling tray. Hawk turned around to face her. “Yeah.” Hawk said as his lips curled up.

“Okay Strawberry or Cherry? There’s a wrong answer btw.” Y/N asked holding the papers up. Hawk pointed to Strawberry and she nodded her head in approval. She grounded up dried rose petals and a bit of weed and put it into the rolling paper, she licked the paper and twisted it shut. Y/N grabbed her lighter and gave it a few puffs before passing to Hawk, who gave a few puffs himself.

“I wanna try something.” Hawk said chuckling and lifting himself onto Y/N’s bed. She snickered as Hawk came closer to her and they were face to face. He took the blunt and took a hit, inhaling and grabbed Y/N’s face with his hands and shotgunned the smoke into her lips.

Y/N looked at Hawk, who was still holding onto her face. “Well that was pretty hot.” She whispered looking at Hawks icy blue eyes that weren’t breaking contact. She looked down at his lips that were begging for attention, and she pressed her lips into his. Hawk kissed back, tilting her chin up as a way for asking for access, Y/N granted and allowed his tongue in.

Y/N laid onto her back as Hawk climbed on top of her and lowered his head down to her neck and planted warm kisses around her neck and collarbones. She let out a few soft moans and could feel Hawk smirk as he heard them. Hawk looked up from his position to see Y/N who was flustered “Can I, make you feel good?” He asked as his pointer finger swiped across the band of her shorts. She nodded yes breathing heavy from anticipation. Hawk smirked as he pulled her hips to the end of the bed so he could get onto his knees in front of her. He swatted her hand away as she tried to undo her pants, insisting on doing it himself, pulling them down, along with her underwear.

Y/N felt the breeze and her body began to hum. Hawk started kissing her thighs leaving love marks on the inside. Y/N groaned in neediness and Hawk ventured farther up till he reached her core, which was slick with wetness and proceeded to insert his tongue into her, making Y/N moan and grip her bedsheets. “Fuck, oh god.” She yelled shutting her eyes as her hips bucked upwards. Hawk had to hold them steadily as he continued his work. Hawk felt the pulsating quicken by Y/N he kept going until she let a loud, tired moan and he felt her release. Hawk stood up and wiped the corners of his mouth as Y/N pulled her underwear back up. Breathing heavily.

“You know I think we should study again tomorrow.” Y/N laughed looking over at Hawk who nodded in agreement.

Y/N’s friend: hey thought you wanted to hang?

Y/N: Oh sorry I got caught up studying

“Yeah studying.” Hawk chortled

rosa | main character: a playlist with a character analysis rationale on why i chose each song

because i saw a post that was like "spotify should have a feature that allows you to add a full essay explaining why that song is in the playlist" and im not waiting for spotify to integrate that in, imma do it myself, HAHA

obligatory disclaimer that these r just my own thoughts and interpretations. spoilers for up to main story 6.2 and other stories here and there

part 1: the pre-story arc of oh, im nothing special

we dont get to see much of mc before the story's game officially Starts, but what we do get to see is through flashbacks in retrospect, and a lot of the time, mc does mention or express this sentiment of like

ah well. im not really anything special at all.

this sentiment comes in in a bunch of cards/stories with the boys (usually vyn or artem) when she sees their achievements and compares herself to them. but even sans the comparison, pre-story, i can see her under the assumption that shes completely run of the mill and nothing of note.

6/10 by dodie illustrates the "not very much" aspect of this

I feel like a six out of ten I've gotta get up early tomorrow again What goes on behind the words? Is there pity for the plain girl?

and Waiting in the Wings from Tangled Adventure is the reaction to this sentiment, in a sense. mc doesnt feel like shes much, but she does still believe in making a change, but god

this song in particular is fun, meta-narratively. it's the song of somebody wanting to the main character, and i think pre-story mc wishes for this moment, unaware that she indeed is the Main Character. like girl, sit tight, ur gonna be the protag.

pre-story mc doesnt think much of herself and is awaiting the moment she can have her chance. and when she does, thats when the story starts.

part 2: he butterflies and frustrations of falling in love

this portion of the playlist is wholly mc just going "aaAAAAA FEELINGS IM HAVING FEELINGS (?)" and the experience is a Lot.

it's novel and sweet and exciting (The Show by Lenka). but it also can make her feel off kilter, unsure, and helpless (Helpless by Rico Blanco). it's a nice experience, but it's also frustrating because she's constantly second guessing her own feelings and the feelings of the other (I Go Crazy by Orla Gartland) aaaaaand eventually once mc finally finally realizes her feelings, i just see it as character for her to be have this....not really impatience, but a certain restlessness on how exactly to get the show on the road, get the relationship moving forward (Make A Move by Lawrence)

part 3: Enneagram Type 1. "I believe that we can fix this over time."

swerve. from the cute delights and frustrations of love, i now wanna talk about what i interpret to be among mc's really important character beliefs: hope

and im also gonna assign her an enneagram type as well: Type 1

Type 1s are titled as The Reformer. this is somebody who is idealistic, believes in integrity, and desires the improvement of the world around them and their own self as well.

the song One by Sleeping At Last illustrates the gist of a Type 1 immensely well (while also making me cry)

Hold on for a minute 'Cause I believe that we can fix this over time That every imperfection is a lie Or at least an interruption Now hold on, let me finish No, I'm not saying perfect exists in this life But we'll only know for certain if we try

this is something apparent in the broad strokes choices of what mc does. in main story 5.3, the last trial, she thinks the line "Justice may not come as swiftly as we'd like, but evil shall never go unpunished. This is why I became an attorney. My conviction will not waver."

mc knows the world is flawed, she knows people do bad things and other people get hurt. perfection is not possible, but she is going to roll up her sleeves and work on it anyway.

this is what matters to her: trying to make things better

this isnt just in her career as a lawyer, it's also in her role as a character in the nxx boys' stories. for each and every one of them, being with her and experiencing events with her and building their relationship with her, all of that causes a shift in their beliefs/tendencies. on a narrative level, she is quite literally pushing the character development of the others

and on a "her as a person interacting with other people" level, she is a catalyst for change.

not just for them, but for her herself. as she pushes towards change, she grows and learns and the insecurity from pre-story slowly changes as well

another lyric in One is

The price of this so called perfection is everything I've spent my whole life searching desperately To find out that grace requires nothing of me

perfection isnt possible in real life and it isnt possible in herself as well. but thats alright. because who she is evidently enough to make things better and thats what she wants

however

this doesnt mean she is immune to doubt

part 4: what am i doing, who am i becoming, what can i do?

this portion of the playlist is part of mc's journey SPECIFICALLY in the aftermath of main story 6.2

once artem and mc are in the hospital, artem goes on his nice speech about justice which is great and did help mc feel a bit better. however, there mc's thought process still betrayed a newfound doubt.

in my main story 6.2 reaction post, i mention this but i'll summarize it: this is the first case thus far in global that doesnt end with a court trial. it's the first case where honestly, justice arguably wasnt served. desperation, cruelty, and anguish led to ava and jerry dead. the cruelty that ava had perpetuated ran so damn deep into so many people, spread to countless lives, and was just so bad that the only way it couldve ended was the cruelty collapsing in on itself. it's over.

but not over in the way mc sees as right or just. thus, she is now doubting certain beliefs and convictions she has, like her belief in justice and good and if that can make a difference

the sheer magnitude of this case...well, since we're not getting main story 7 for a bunch more months (hyv pls feel free to prove me wrong here lol, i'd happily accept THIS schedule deviation), i can only speculate that this doubt is something thatll weigh on her mind.

and with doubt, comes questions

Where Am I Now? from Lysistrata Jones is a great song that illustrates the doubt after a failure. all that effort gone to nothing, the first questions are going to be along the lines of where do we go from here?

Maybe just some more time, just a little more fight, Like they say, no guts, no glory. All and all I did fine or maybe I'm like a hundred miles off course, Well, maybe that was too much, maybe not enough. Maybe I should just turn back now. Cuz' how do I go on When everything's so wrong. Where am I now? How am I here? Which way do I turn When it's all so unclear? I'm standing alone With nothing but fear.

Flesh & Bone by Sammy Rae is a song that continues the questions that sprout from doubt. moving on from questioning the situation, mc now begins questioning herself, how shes changed

But I need to know I don’t need to be shown I've gotta see it for myself I've gotta learn it on my own I need to know if I am flesh & bone And am I still growing or full grown?

Green & Gold by Lianne La Havas is similar to the previous song but, since im a hopeful bastard at heart, the tone starts changing. still questioning but the answer is going to lie in the fact that mc is not going at all of this alone. shes got the rest of the nxx with her, supporting her and each other. this is the way out from doubt: looking through other people's eyes

Last Hope by Paramore is the acceptance that things are going to be rocky, it's not always going to be clear cut, but damn it, if she's gotta believe in something anyway

It's just a spark but it's enough to keep me going And when it's dark out and no one's around it keeps glowing

and City Lights by December Avenue represents the convergence of the questions and the conviction to keep on going anyway. the pre-chorus includes the lyrics:

part 5: what love really means, how love can really help

if part 2 was about the surface level beginnings of love, this section is absolutely about the deeper benefits of love

Lost Stars from Begin Again is love still tinged with doubt, but an acceptance of that doubt. mc is never going to have a completely sure life, what with NXX stuff and also just the usual imperfections of how people work (gonna be true for all love interest routes, our boys are wonderfully flawed as hell, each w their own baggage and issues), but thats okay

because What You Mean To Me from Finding Neverland represents the uncertainty of love and how a leap of faith is what can get people through.

I won't lie I'm a little bit frightend Of my imagination Swear I'll try I'm feeling enlightened You're my inspiration We can fly if we want to I promise that faith will give you wings

and Look Up by Stars is a song that i put here not to represent a romantic love between mc and anybody

this song is a love towards herself

the chorus goes:

and the bridge goes:

back when i was making the boys' playlists, i wanted to add this song in like. every single one of them JHAVKJHFAJKSFHA, cuz it fits all of them. they all have their moments of hopelessness or fear and they have to make the conscious choice to see better is out there, and a part of that better is our beloved rose-coded main character. back then, i took the bridge to be representing that it takes hard work (toil) and vulnerability (heart) to love her (rose)

but now i see it's a perfect song for mc herself. after all her doubts, every time shes fallen, every time it wasnt enough (toil), she gets back up. the heart she needs to love the rose, herself, is akin to her conviction in goodness. she has to believe in it (heart).

she has to believe in herself, the rose.

part 6: this story is going to be a good one, i will work to make make it a good one

all of these songs now are on the same general theme of Making Things Better, the joy of a brighter day ahead, and hope. but the one i do wanna focus on is Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield

aside from being an absolute banger and also being in line with this part's theme, it's also a song that fits mc meta-narratively

she is Literally the main character. as the catalyst for the story's beginning and the other characters' development, she is the driving force pushing the story forward. to loop this back to the beginning, mc had seen herself as nothing special or of note. yet there are many many things that does set her out as a good person, and one of which the keeps the story going is the fact that she does not give up.

so while she'll have her low points, she gets back on track cuz and Keeps Going because this is something she believes in. through this, the story continues and she's definitely got opinions on what kind of story she wants to be making. the rest is unwritten, and shes determined to make this a good story for the herself and the people she cares about

- after that first jumpscare he relaxes back into his chair and all the scary scenes that happened afterwards he glances at you (and u still had no reaction) n he can’t help but feel at awe at how both invested and nonchalant u were at the movie bc it had ethan lowkey shaking in his seat LOL

- when the movie finished u were talking about just how good the movie was while u guys walked home, and ethan was like ,,,hey that didn’t scare you at all? and you replied “ofc not, i don’t get scared by horror movies!” while beaming at him

- and u look good as fuck smiling so ethan feels his face grow warm n ykw he’s happy he learned something new about u

- also he’s lowkey impressed so W. he now has an additional excuse to bring u on more dates

- horror movies don’t scare this boy but he isn’t the biggest fan of them either

- so when you guys were crashing at harry’s house, u decided to watch a movie and harry’s fine with it bc he’s with u :D

- and there was a new movie trending in the program he uses to watch movies n it interested u so u asked if he could watch it with u

- harry’s whipped so obviously he says to go ahead

- like ethan, he doesn’t know what to expect at first but harry quickly realized it was a horror movie about 1/3 into the story

- he nudges u and tells u that it was going to be a horror movie (he wasn’t sure if u were into that sort of stuff) he’s surprised when u reassure him that it’s fine

- like said before he’s not a huge fan of horror movies even tho he could handle them as well u can, so he huddles next to u and wraps a large blanket around the two of u with a bowl of snacks

- u guys just relax the entire time bc no matter how terrifying the movie got harry’s warmth was such an overwhelming, comfortable presence so it didn’t matter at all

- after the movie ended, u guys got way too comfortable and u both really didn’t want to move, so it ended up as a horror movie binge night with you sitting on his lap, arms wrapped around ur waist with the blanket wrapped around harry’s head as u two continued to invest urselves in the movie

- drifted off to sleep at around 5 am fucked up sleep schedule gang wya

- horror movies would usually induce nightmares or sleepless nights, but u guys slept peacefully with a good dream that night (or morning, since the sun was basically rising by the times u guys slept lol)

- he’s a “gentleman” somewhat so he chooses a more tame movie, like one with just one or two jumpscares

- you both were huddled in front of the television screen and zion kept touching shoulders with u and making snarky remarks like “huh y/n u scared yet? i bet ur scared >:)”

- however, he underestimated the horror movie’s scary level so when the first jumpscare came around he’s caught off guard

- expected u to hug his waist or something in reaction but he’s genuinely surprised when u just kept watching on like it was nothing

- after the movie ends, you said “damn that was it?? zion i expected more i thought u were going to show me a scary movie!!”

- tbh all zion hears is more time with u so he’s like BET and chooses the next few horror movies that were on and doesn’t even bother to watch them, he’s just staring at u intensely to see if u have any reaction

- he was pretty sad that his plan to get u into his arms failed but he takes pride in having a s/o that can watch scary stuff with ease

- so obviously there was some improvisation and u did the suggestion

- he’s not easily scared tho, he has the “well it’s just a movie, it can’t hurt me” mindset so he doesn’t mind watching a horror movie at all

- honestly, his thought process was the exact same as zion’s

- lawrence enjoys having u in his arms while ur vulnerable bc he likes the idea of being ur protector

- he’s far far more discreet about it and purposefully leads u to watch a movie with him, and chooses a movie with an innocent looking poster so u wouldn’t see what was coming >:D

- he thinks your innocence is adorable so he’s super eager to show u a scary movie

- lawrence already knows what’s going to happen in the movie so he’s super prepared and he’s honestly only staring at you

- but when u were just there relaxing and calmly watching the movie with some people getting bludgeoned or something lawrence was like,, “this isn’t part of the plan HOLD UP”

- kind of disappointed that there wasn’t any reaction but you guys made it up afterwards because when u exited the movie theater with your arm around his, you were excitedly talking about the entire thing and you said something like “lawrence!!! i didn’t know you were into horror movies, you picked such a good one!”

- his disappointment washes off immediately because seeing your face light up was so cute and it was 100% more worth it than some cheap tactic ironic lawrence

Hi!! i really wanted to know your thoughts on the culmination of romans arc!! i definitely didnt expect him to stick with his siblings even w logan staring him down and promising a place for him in the company after selling. Even though logans never gonna choose his children over himself, i think him trying to get roman back on his side, demonstrated that ultimately he favored roman and it was never gonna be kendall or shiv. Or it could just have been that logan thought roman was easier to crack lol. I really liked the romangerri bit at the end with gerri essentially siding w logan bc it was best for her and the company, w no loyalty to roman (as she should) and his reaction was very interesting. Also what did you think abt the conversation between logan and roman on the way to the reunion w matsenn, could that have alluded to at the very least non straight roman? I also feel like that conversation and shivs comments leaned very heavily on his mommy issues and could also explain his mountain of sexual issues and his fixation and relationship w gerri. i’ve been dying to know what u thought!!

Hi! Thank you, anon, and oof, I loved Roman's arc across the season and especially I loved how different it was from Kendall and Shiv's fall from grace in s1 and s2 respectively.

I think the show does an incredible job generally about the different ways the Roy siblings have internalised and externalised their father's abuse, while still allowing for certain similarities. In so many ways, s3 re-emphasised that with Kendall and Shiv being a sort of dark mirror to each other, and I think it had this wonderful effect narratively of while the two of them were so fixed on reflecting each other, Roman and Connor both got to grow and contort and really develop and regress in their siblings' blindspots.

By that, I mean there was this sort of space opened up by Kendall being ousted and Shiv being on the backstep and both of them still only viewing each other as competition. That newly opened space gave Roman and Connor the room and the opportunity to step up. I think s4's likely to really drum that home with Connor, but for s3, I think we saw what Roman's capable of (for better and for worse) when he's given both guidance and room out of his siblings' shadow, something he hasn't had since - - well. Maybe ever (or at least since Kendall was in rehab).

I was so nervous going into that last scene in the finale, because I was the same as you! I thought there was a risk thatt he'd betray them (especially with him and Kerry being colour-matched!), but I actually think it makes a lot of sense that he wouldn't. Jesse talked a bit in the Controlling the Narrative segment that it was feeling the weight of support from his siblings that let Roman stand his ground, which I think you can really feel in the scene, but I also think there's this interesting layer to it too where the show's really established two things about Roman. The first is that Roman has really good intuition in a way that none of his other siblings do, and the second is that Roman learns in a way that none of his other siblings do.

Roman's greatest strength is his ability to - - mmm, not shapeshift exactly, because I don't think that's what Roman does, but read people enough to know how to accomodate them and play to their personalities and their interests. He does it with Lawrence as far back as 1.06, and it's a skill we've seen develop across season 2 and season 3, but, importantly, one he really grew confidence in over the back half of s3. He's learnt to trust his instincts because he's increasingly realised his instincts are right.

Add that to the fact that Roman takes away lessons when things blow up in his face (which hilariously neither Kendall nor Shiv do), and I think that final scene felt so authentic to who Roman is. He had both gut instinct telling him not to trust his father, and the benefit of hindsight. He's seen exactly how Logan's gone back on his promises to Kendall and Shiv, he's seen that Logan's word only holds it's meaning in the minute he says it. That it doesn't hold under it's own weight, and when faced with Logan's dishonesty, Roman had instead this immediate and brutally naked honesty between him, Kendall and Shiv to fall back on, and right then? There? That mattered a lot.

And as for Logan and Roman's conversation on the boat heading to Matsson – yeah! I actually kind of love how ambiguous the show is being about it, haha, and I think Shiv hit the nail on the head in the car where she said Logan thinks there's something wrong with Roman. I don't know if Logan even necessarily actually thinks he's gay, especially given what just happened with Gerri – in fact, I think there's probably an argument to be made that Logan's latched onto homophobic insults because at least being gay is something he understands over not being able to have sex. If Roman's fucking men, at least he's fucking, and there are ways around it. Not being able to have sex at all, especially to a guy like Logan, I think signals to him that Roman's effectively broken, something put into even starker relief when compared to his other children who have all got very active sex lives (albeit all of them with uhhhhh dysfunction / baggage / manic obsessive issues attached to said sex lives, haha).

As for Roman himself, I do think he's not straight, but I think it's really open to interpretation at this point what that means and I don't expect the show to ever clarify. I do think a lot of his issues stem though from a mix of insecurity and inadequacy complexes, anxiety and being desensitised to sex acts (and as a result attracted to more extreme things) as a side effect of being terminally online.
