#to me thinking that just because it's a slow instrumental song means it's more fitting for folklore/evermore

people who think new years day doesn't fit in reputation because it's an intimate instrumental and clashes against the complex production of the rest of the record don't actually get the central thesis statement of reputation

Stop putting 'Too Sweet' by Hozier in your Sylus playlists
I am sorry—this was clickbait. I don’t actually care what you do with your life. But I need you to hear me out for just a second, okay? I am extremely not neurotypical about two things: Love and Deepspace, and Andrew John Hozier-Byrne. And I have seen more than one person in the tags talk about "Too Sweet" by Hozier being a perfect song for Sylus and MC. My only discourse about this is that Too Sweet is a song about a man who makes continuous self-sabotaging life decisions being incompatible with a partner who has her life put together. In my humble opinion, both Sylus and MC are hot messes of people in completely different ways. Anyway, it’s a good song so I don’t blame you for putting it in every playlist ever. In fact, you should. But if you're into this song, I want to show you a couple more pls pls pls 🙏
I might just be autistic, but both Hozier's music and Love and Deepspace have something extremely important in common… and that’s BEAUTIFUL MEN YEARNING!!!1 And that’s not even to mention the haunting, raw sexuality we can project onto the stories that each of these things feeds to us. That's why I needed to make this post on the 1% chance that someone might hop on this brainrot train with me. So let me present, for just a moment of your time (if you're willing): other Hozier songs that fit Sylus so well I want to combust about it.
De Selby (Parts 1 & 2):
“At last, when all of the world is asleep You take in the blackness of air The likes of a darkness so deep That God—at the start—couldn't bear.” [azlyrics] [gaelic translation]
Imagine just casually writing THE love song that so beautifully says, “Before you were in my life, I kinda understood how God felt before he created the universe.” Excuse me? Andrew just dropped this stanza on us without so much as a cw: fuck you. And if that sickening portrait of gnawing loneliness isn’t enough, we have all the Genesis God references. Since all the LIs in the game are at some point likened to gods or rivaling gods with their power, then add the reverberating instrumentals and chillingly slow vocals in this 2-minute killer, tell me how this song does not fit Sylus. Not only that, but we also have imagery of his lover descending upon him like the night (which is invoked during Part 1 in the Gaelic verse), and I know that’s on the nose for Sylus but come on. I need you guys writing smut to have an orgasm during De Selby (at least Part 2) because it might change ur brain chemistry I'm just saying.
“When you fall on me like night—I wanna kill the lights.” [azlyrics]
This song still rules irt its playing with darkness symbolism, but it also refers to the darkness in the singer’s lover—which in Sylus’ case is MC and we all were there when she shot the guy in the heart like his freaky eye was telling her: “And your heart, love, has such darkness—I feel it in the corners of the room…” my goddddddd stop right there I can’t handle the METAPHORrrr. You think Sylus gives a flying fuck about MC’s frivolous morality bullshit? No he wants her to embrace her own darkness, sit under the blankies with him and cuddle after doing crimes and a beat poetry session. This is some fucking Hannibal Lecter beyond-dark-romance shit. I’m not even trying to write a dissertation here (and yet…)
Talk (from Wasteland, Baby!):
“I'd be the sweet feeling of release mankind now dreams of, That's found in the last witness before the wave hits, marveling at God… Imagine being loved by me.” [azlyrics]
Not only does this song utilize insane Greek mythology metaphor and Biblical comparison but the overall meaning of it is, “I want you so bad, I need to speak poetically to hide how down bad I am for you.” That sounds kinda like Old World Sylus and all his pretty nicknames to me.
NFWMB:
“If I was born as a black thorn tree, I'd wanna be felled by you, held by you, Fuel the pyre of your enemies… Ain't it warming you, the world going up in flames?” [azlyrics]
This whole song just some hard, deep and steady yearning for 4 and a half minutes. Are you kidding? The acronym in the title stands for Nothing Fucks With My Baby, which is sung in the chorus like some quietly violent war chant—soft, dark, and powerful. Anyway don’t tell me Mr. Sylus “Give me a list and then go to bed. I’ll take care of it” Loveanddeepspace wouldn’t scorch the earth for the love of his life—or do one better and stand by her side while she scorches the earth herself; here’s the protective/supportive mans anthem you ordered babes.
It Will Come Back:
“I know who I am when I'm alone—I'm something else when I see you. You don't understand, you should never know How easy you are to need.” [azlyrics]
This song has repeated imagery that warns of the dangers of taking care of a feral animal, and then compares the feral animal to the singer as a lover. Like fuck off, that’s sexy and haunted. And we know that not only does Sylus love animals more than people, but he’s pretty animalistic himself if we are to believe that maybe he’s secretly a demon or something.
Arsonist’s Lullaby:
“Don't you ever tame your demons, but always keep them on a leash.” [azlyrics]
Remember in Lost Oasis when MC goes on some tangent wondering what Sylus' past was like? Well it was this song. It's about troubled youth and learning to grow in your darkness. Also how cool is that imagery of demons? Hey Sylus, what do you have to say about demons? I'll wait. In the meantime I'm tattooing this shit on my clavicle
BONUS ROUND Through Me:
“Everytime I’d burn through the world, I’d see that the world—it burns through me.”
We got a man and we got some fire allusions so there ya go.
Blood Upon the Snow:
“To all things housed in her silence, Nature offers a violence.”
Blood upon the snow—it's red and white! Red!! And white!!! Also kind of a Sylus x Zayne anthem lbr
Ok I hope you found another song that inspires you to make Sylus art or fanfic with!! And before you ask, yes I've already assigned Hozier songs to every other love interest in the game. Ok thanks for reading!!! 🏃‍♀️💨

SNATCH ME UP | b.chan x latina!reader
Tumblr media
implied angst + spanish words + idol!au + making up + cat owner reader + fluff
the air is chilly and your racing heart only makes you acknowledge how nervous you are. which means you feel colder than usual because of the nerves. you can hear the crowd, muffled by your heart beat but you only dwell on it more than usual.
“n/n,” the maknae of your group whispers behind you, the nickname she specifically gave you brings you back to reality.
“hm?” you hum, not trusting your voice.
“are you ready?”
“no,” you whisper, but it sounds more like a whimper.
she hugs you from behind, reassuring you that you got this. “-and chan-sunbaenim will be very proud!”
you relax for a moment but that is exactly why you’re nervous. chan is somewhere in the crowd, definitely waiting for your amazing performance alongside your group but what he doesn’t know is that you and emi have a duo opening act and more importantly you will be singing in spanish (or whatever latin american language you speak). your native tongue.
“we got this, you’re not alone.” emi assures quickly before the backtrack starts to play in your in-ear monitors.
you take a quick deep breath before taking your first stride down the stage. the instrumental is slow, darker than what the original song is but it’s perfect. you’ll sing it just as slow and full of pain, acting has always been your forte. you’ll just have to pretend like always, making your heart calm down sooner than later.
“VE~N,” you scream-sing into the mic, looking darkly at the crowd, you know everyone must be startled at the foreign language. “Y CUENTAME LA VERDAD.”
“TEN PIEDAD,” you takes a shuddering breath, “Y DIME. POR QUE~!? NO. NO, NO~!”
and emi goes in, translating the verse that comes afterwards in korean as you move to back her up in the dance. you manage to get a glimpse of a screen, seeing chan and minho stare intensely at the performance. you make yourself believe that there wasn’t any pain in chan’s face. you didn’t even want to see him, really. what a coincidence that was.
and just when the trumpet’s instrumental dies down, the transition to your group’s latest comeback plays. you and emi move in sync, her voice filling up your in-ear again and soon, your other members join in.
your composure lasts all evening. you feel relieved when you finally get off the stage. emi and the others exclaim how happy they were, that you did amazing. that everything will be alright.
you weren’t sure but hopefully everything did go well. whether chan and you make up or not, whether the two of you break up, you knew you had other things to focus on. you were fine before him, you could be fine aft-
“y/n.”
you freeze, last in line as your group files out to leave the backstage and head to the seats outside.
“y/n we need to talk,” chan whispers loud enough for you to hear.
you peer over your shoulder, “now is not the time, chris.”
he can hear the underlying venom in your voice. he takes a deep breath.
“well look at my messages and you’ll deem what day is fit.” is all he says before walking away, preparing for the stage.
you swallow, rushing your steps to catch up to the girls. you get some praise from idols you pass by, a lot of soft claps and “loved it!” whisper-shouted. your back hurt from all the bowing.
by the time you sit, stray kids’ performance already started. you can only hold back tears as you see your possible ex-boyfriend shine.
Tumblr media
“we can leave and let him come here to talk,” your leader says.
“i don’t know…” you say softly, sullen.
“i think it’s best, our dorms aren’t known by the public yet, unlike theirs, and the dorms are safer than a cafe or whatever you two originally had in mind.”
you stare at her, sighing in defeat. “okay, i’ll text him then.”
she pats your shoulder, smiling warmly.
“thank marie,” you say to her, jokingly adding a french accent.
“yah,” she says while ruffling your hair as she exits the kitchen.
you go to chan’s chat, staring at all the messages and all the registered missed calls. your hands tremble and sweat, your mind races. what if he changes his mind and immediately just says the 3 words? what if he gets aggressive when he gets here? what if-
“stop overthinking,” emi’s voice startles you, causing your thumb to send the message you had mindlessly typed.
“ai- mierda!” you groan, whining as you slump over the table.
“if this is about chan you shouldn’t be like this!” she scolds, “you act like he’d hurt you.”
“he already has-“
“on purpose.” she strains, “and physically. he would never hurt you in that way! plus. he wouldn’t have any reason or right to, he’s the one at fault.”
“i know,” you groan as you hear your phone ding.
chan’s reply was a simple “alright”. you weren’t sure how to feel about that. but it didn’t matter, emi made sure you were in decent spirits by the time she and the girls left. all of them gave you words of encouragement and you relaxed just a tiny bit but the nerves returned while meet up time got closer.
you shut yourself in your room, playing with you cat to try to relax once more. yet, you couldn’t. everything frustrated you, everything made you want to cry. especially how cute your cat looked in the white vest chan gave him a few weeks ago.
when the doorbell rings, you jump. your cat scurries away, surprised at how jittery you are. you close the door behind you, locking your baby inside your room.
your heart is racing, you already want to cry.
but you have to be strong. you have to face reality. nothing has been easy up until now, foreigners as trainees never do.
a break up is nothing.
chan us standing on the other side of the door frame, looking charming in his grey sweats and black hoodie. he doesn’t have his beany on, but he looks dashing as ever.
“hi,” he tries a smile, you reflect it as well.
“hi, come in,” you step aside, allowing him to do so.
both of you are quiet and tense as you head to the kitchen. he sets his bag on the table, and quickly strikes conversation.
“i want to apologize.” he starts, you silently sit down on the stool. “for constantly putting you aside, for diminishing you, for taking out my problems on you and treating you like that’s all i have you for. y/n,” you manage to make eye contact and you see the tears brimming in his eyes.
it makes you reflect that same expression.
“i love you. i truly mean it. i know me having problems these past few months aren’t an excuse, i know better than to treat you like that and still did it and i hurt you and that makes me feel horrible. because the moment i let you in my life, i’ve never been happier. you’ve been nothing but supportive and loving and i’ve tried my best to return it but i’ve failed you so horribly these last few months. i’m really sorry, for doing that. for making you cry.”
you wipe your tears, realizing that you indeed were crying at that very moment. you sniffle, looking down at the ends of chan’s bag’s straps that you’ve been messing with these past few minutes.
“i’m tired, chan,” you say.
his shoulders sag, “i know, and i know i caused that. you’re so patient… i actually hit your limit.”
you swallows thickly, “but even so, i still want to give it another try,” you look at him again, “because i love you too. we’ve been together for a year and a half, chan. i don’t want to throw that away. and if we ever do then i don’t want to end on bad terms. that would hurt me more.”
“i know,” he says softly, “i know. baby.” he leans over the table, reaching out and placing his hands over yours. “will you forgive me?”
you nod.
“and will you give me another chance?”
“yeah,” you sniffle.
“good, because i brought this.” chan grins, sniffling a bit as well. he removes his hands from yours and pulls out a box from his bag.
“and what’s this for?” you question as you take the box.
“a present,” he simply says, biting his bottom lip as he watches you set it on the table to open it.
you gasp as you see the custom made cat collar that you had made a few days ago. you didn’t really have money for it, most of your check went into the trainee debt you’ve earned and are close to paying off. you found a beautiful site with expensive but pretty customizable options. with every collar purchase, the seller would send a matching ring or bracelet (to obviously match with the kitty).
you couldn’t help but grin as chan put the bracelet on. especially when he said he purchased the ring so the three of you have family jewelry.
“cosita linda mia,” you squeal, swooping up the fluffy orange cat that comfortably laid on your bed in a loaf position. “look what daddy brought you!”
chan grins, adoring how you cradle and kiss your cat. he hugs you from behind, resting his chin on your shoulder.
“i’m serious,” he says softly. “i love you, i always want to see you happy.”
you sigh softly, melting into his arms as your cat jumps out of your arms. the two of you watch the feline walk away to the bed, to resume its previous position.
“always?”
he nods, “always,” he kisses your neck, “and i’ll make sure to achieve that. i don’t want to lose a talented, beautiful person because of my stupidity.”
“yeah,” you grin, “cus like lilly says, i don’t like stupid people.”
hearing his laugh in your ears makes you feel warm and fuzzy again. and thats how you know, you’re back in his hold for sure.

Not all of these are directly vocaloid related and this mostly reflects my own tastes but.
Ryōshū probably listens to the DMCV and Metal Gear Rising: Revengence songs just loud enough that others can hear it if they sit next to her. Agree on the ADO but would also add Butchers Vanity (chef), symaG, Kan Kan and MARETU.
Faust probably is into game OSTs, like the ones for Neir:Automata and the SMT series. Plus blackY, a lil bit of Team Grimoire, and Touhou. As well as general classical sometimes - I feel like she'd prefer instrumentals. Rhythm game ahh music taste when she isn't trying to focus on something (because she is good at them)
Heath would absolutely like vocaloid, but specifically a real sucker for the catchy ones like Mesmerizer and Luka Luka ☆ Night Fever. Listens to jubyphonic for EN covers. Oft falls prey to the 'bopping song/depressing lyrics' phenomenon (just like Sinclair)
Yi Sang likes peaceful sounding songs, like (gestures at Mili) and video game OSTs ,but I I see him liking upbeat ones like La Primavera and I Got It!. He listens to more songs with lyrics after canto 4.
Sinclair likes Tokyo Teddy Bear. Neru, PinoccioP, MARETU, DECO * 27, syudou and generally the most popular Vocaloid artists like a decade ago. Also likes the occasional classical and stuff like Take Me to Church, Partners in Crime and TLT's Discord remix. Listens to Nightcore when he thinks nobody else can hear it (they can). Eminem.
Gregor likes the songs that shops play bc they were popular 5-30 years ago.
Donqui is also a rhythm game fiend but esp likes the ones like Sswwiinnddlleerr or The Big Black where you aren't 100% sure throwing kitchenware down the stairs or putting an orchestra in a centrifuge wasnt at least a part of the process. Loves Fixer anthems/themes (they probably sound like indie horror game fansongs) and anime songs like A Cruel Angel's Thesis, Lifetime Girl Declaration and Lucky Star's Opening. Eurobeat.
Charon does not yet know what Eurobeat is. This is the reason the bus only hits things sometimes.

oh my gosh limbus headcanons in my inbox let’s go?? I’ll try responding to these erm hold on.
Ryōshū one I absolutely agree with, can’t believe I never considered Butchers Vanity and the MGR:R soundtrack. She would totally listen to loud blaring songs and metal, songs with raw emotions. But maybe also songs with deeper meanings because uh. Art or something.
Faust being a rhythm gamer is just yes.
You worded the Heathcliff vocaloid bit way better than I did. Imagining Heathcliff listening to mesmerizer or Young girl A completely oblivious, yeah. Jubyphonic as a go-to for english covers is very valid. I also think he might like Laufey for the love songs and such, a bit of mitski or joji in there too perhaps.
I’ve personally always imagined Yi Sang liking any song with some kind of deep meaning behind it(trademark) or some story because erm, typical poet behavior. But he definitely would feel intimidated by loud blaring music so he sticks to mellow, slow-paced songs. At times I imagine him liking the Hawaii Part ii album because of the lore(trademark), other times I imagine him listening to funkytown unironically.
Sinclair, he probably even shares a playlist with Heathcliff. Generally agree on this and I think he would be even more secretive about his music taste than Heathcliff. Sinclair being Sinclair. Probably also shares a playlist with Ryōshū due to them hanging out a lot. Take me to church fits really well considering his source material. Also Eminem oh my god…???
Gregor being a Dad oh god… Sounds accurate honestly. I think he would like Army Dreamers by Kate Bush though.
Don checks out. She’s probably really good at certain songs in rhythm games and absolutely terrible in others, no in between. I like to imagine she comes up with her own fixer songs, almost like a disney channel musical movie protagonist. Just randomly starts singing on the spot. Considering that one Don Quixote musical, if it existed somehow in the Project Moon universe she would love it.
Charon….
Tumblr media
Yeah that sounds about right for Ishy. For me she listens to sea shanties very often, mostly for the nostalgia. But those really sad sea shanties like Bones in the Ocean, and other stuff by The Longest Johns or other shanty bands. There’s one I found that’s directly telling the story of Moby Dick (as well as the Moby Dick musical) I know it won’t mix very well considering the lore and timeline just like with the Don Quixote one but still.
Tumblr media
No worries :D
Tumblr media
I have never heard such a specific name for song. I searched it up just now and thank you anon for introducing me to nanahira lol.
But with Hong Lu mentioned I honestly think he wouldn’t know much about pop songs prior to joining Limbus Company, probably from his relatives keeping him sheltered from the outside world. He probably only knew about traditional songs or classical pieces. But being in Limbus Company now he definitely would share similar tastes to Don Quixote, or is probably really open to any kind of music because he’s never heard a lot of it. I think he’d like Bitter Choco Decoration.
Phew that was a lot. Thank you anon for the fun headcanons to read and think about!!

There are no signs whatsoever that cars exist in the bugbo universe and despite this I’m making car related / driving headcannons cause fuck you. >:D
Bugbo
He is always driving exactly. the speed limit.
Not a digit over or under.
And he never accelerates or breaks, the car just. is. in the state he wants it to be.
Everyone in the car has to be buckled up, sitting straight forward, feet on the floor, or the car isn’t moving.
(Fights have broken out because of this, usually between him and Hoppo)
He says it’s for safety
(knowing him it’s prolly a power trip thing)
There is no music. Dead silence. Even the wind outside seems quieter
And in the off chance there is music, there’s no lyrics and it’s probably some shit like
“Kahoot Question Music 1 Hour Loop”
And it’s so quiet you can’t even recognize what it is.
If you try to talk to him he’ll respond in short, almost snippy responses
If you keep trying he’ll eventually just point blank say “You know, it’s not very safe or polite to distract the driver.”
Unless he likes you, somehow, then he might have a short conversation with you.
He does the same when he’s a passenger, but to a lesser degree
He’s usually the one who dictates who drives, and, for some reason, he picks Joe a lot.
(Joe doesn’t mind, he likes driving :>)
Hoppo has accused him of being scared of driving before, which he did not take kindly to.
Gerbo
He tends not to drive since cars don’t fit his… build.
He’s all legs, cars aren’t made that way
But in the case that he does, he’d probably drive really slow, mostly out of caution
He most definitely is scared of driving (but Hoppo isn’t gonna say anything to him)
Which isn’t much of an issue considering they probably have the only car on globe
Like that one Yo Gabba Gabba episode
Music wise, I’m not sure
Everyone infantilizes him so much, it drives me crazy
Y’all aren’t listening to Baby Shark 10hr loop
Maybe once for the hype
BUT THATS IT
He probably would listen to more upbeat music,
I have a very limited taste in music and I don’t think he’d like any of my music (It’s all about drugs and wanting to eat the rich or it’s Jack Stauber)
Actually he’d maybe like some Jack Stauber music! Like maybe Buttercup and songs along those lines! His more happy sounding music?
Idk other people with different/better music taste tell me what you think
He doesn’t mind conversation while he’s driving. In fact, I think he likes it!
He likes the casual small talk type conversations, and if they lead into deeper conversations that’s even better!
He offers to drive anytime, but it’s usually either Bugbo or Joe driving, not that he minds. (Please don’t make him drive)
(He does prefer it when Joe drives, but he’d never say it, especially not to bugbo)
Gradient Joe
He’d probably drive the most
He’s the one most… built? for a car?
He tries to drive the speed limit but he might get distracted and speed up or slow down a little
So like, typical driving? I guess?
His music would likely also be more instrumental, mostly because it is a bit easier to focus
And he’s probably driving everyone around, so he’s gonna need some help focusing
But also when it does have lyrics, y’all can fight me on this but I bet he’d like love songs
Like, this isn’t a “omg he’s a romantic he wants to kiss everyone and marry everyone omgggg” thing, more of a like,
Everything is so- rough? All the time?
I mean, he got shoved face fucking first down a mystery hole that was who knows how deep, then guilted into running for mayor with no prep, and then whitenesses a murder, all in around 48 hours
Everything is so fast paced and bright and so much all the time
And love songs are usually much softer, calmer, sweeter
It’s a little moment of peace, you know? Even if it’s just a little distraction before Bugbo ropes him into another wildly overwhelming adventure
Anyway woah car headcannons hi this is what we’re here for jfc
He kinda prefers it to be a little quieter too
(And I think bugbo might, in one of his brief moments of kindness, remind the others to be quieter so he can focus)
If it’s just him and one other person, he might substitute music for listening to them talk
Even if he can’t respond, he likes to nod along and give other people a little break too. Just let them get things off their chest, yk?
I bet he also likes to drive because it is a little tiny bit of control within this chaos ridden mess of a universe.
Why is this one so long? Where did all the gradient joe angst come from? What the hell?
Hoppo
She doesn’t drive often either
Not because she’s built more bug like and so it’s a little awkward for her, she makes that work.
She doesn’t drive because the others won’t let her.
She is driving at least 15 over the speed limit on a “safe” day
Hits curbs like they spat at her grandma
Probably has at least one leg propped up in the seat at all times
only one hand on the wheel
Music. Is. BLASTING.
Marina, Scene Queen, Mother Mother, Sir Chloe, Girl in Red, Penelope Scott, Hemlock Springs, Mitski, Chrissy Chlapecka, Kiki Rockwell, and the occasional Lemon Demon
She has a playlist called “songs to piss bugbo off”
And she’s just casually chatting with whoever is in the front seat while the car shakes from the bass in these songs
Bugbo doesn’t let her drive because he knows she’s doing her best to piss him off
Joe doesn’t let her drive out of pure fear
Gerbo, ironically, is usually in the front seat because he minds her driving the least
If it was just her and Gerbo or Joe she’d prolly tone it down some, maybe at least turn the music down
But if Bugbo is within five miles, you best believe Pink Rover is gonna be shaking the ground he stands on like an earthquake
She’s pretty much the same as a passenger. If Bugbo is driving she’s being obnoxious and goofy, if it’s anyone else she will tone it down some
If Bugbo’s not around she’ll tone it down a lot, maybe just chatting and laughing
(Let me make it clear, she doesn’t dislike bugbo, in fact quite the opposite. But that’s another headcannon for another day)
Thomas Flyswatter
He has the only other car on globe
(I can’t decide if it’s the helicopter he used and it just doubles as a car or if this bitch just has like a Honda civic parked behind his lair)
Driving wise, he’s similar to Joe
Generally pretty typical, though depending on his mood he might speed quite a bit
He rarely, rarely has anyone else in his car
If you even see his car he trusts you a lot
If he drives you around you might as well be besties
Or he pities you (which if this man is pitying you you’ve gotta get your life in check bestie cause holy shit-)
The music he plays depends on his mood and who he’s with
If hes in a villainy “I’m gonna go do evil things mwah ha ha >:D” he’s listening to Toby Fox (and y’all cannot convince me otherwise)
If he’s in a more relaxed mood he, too, may listen to Jack Stauber (probably different than the songs Gerbo would listen to though, some similarities tho) and Definitely some Will Wood
If you are his absolute bestie, like he trusts you with his life, he may, if you’re lucky, break out the broadway music, but only if you’re very lucky
He may be a little quiet at first, but if whoever he’s driving around starts a conversation with him he’ll talk
And also if he’s not talking he’s subconsciously lip syncing because I’m projecting stfu
He also hits curbs a lot

Palace & Boss BGMs semi-analysis (1/2)
Broken Arrow: The name, to my knowledge, is a US military code phrase meaning “Immediate danger, air support needed.” idk exactly how that ties into Kiuchi but hey, good to know. As some have noticed, it sounds like Price mixed with King Queen Slaves, which is fitting because Kiuchi is basically Kamoshida + Kaneshiro. Additionally, the pianos in the song are tuned to sound like the ones in a baseball game.
Broken Arrow -Another-: It’s slow tempo, lower pitch, and focus more on the guitars of its other version, could possibly be a nod to stock “dirty” music, fitting for his palace’s second half being a strip club.
Last Strike: It’s instrumentation and lyrics tell me it’s supposed to just be Kiuchi’s boss theme, as opposed to the X version of Blooming Villain. It’s title is a possible nod to the boss fight being Kiuchi’s “third strike” against people, once for forgoing practices for times at the club and once for attempting to grievously injure Motoha and seriously hurting Tomoko.
I was going to wait for (2/2), but it’s been two days and I don’t seem to have gotten it? If you sent it, you might have to resend it :(
That aside, apparently “broken arrow” as a military code phrase can also “refer to an accidental event that involves nuclear weapons [...] that does not create a risk of nuclear war”, according to Wikipedia. But that’s the English usage of the phrase, so it’s possible neither meaning is really intended? Considering Lord Cupid uses a bow and arrow to attack, I have to wonder if it’s actually intended as a reference to the “real” Cupid’s bow and arrow, and maybe it’s “broken” in the sense that Kiuchi’s misusing it. Definitely agree with the P5 song comparisons, though! When I was going through Kiuchi’s Palace, I’d get Broken Arrow stuck in my head, but I’d notice it quickly morph into Price instead (a song I know much better), haha.
I agree with your take on the second version of Broken Arrow, though!
Now that you mention it, I know it came up before, but I think you’re right about Last Strike actually being made specifically as Kiuchi’s boss theme, heh. Considering his whole thing was running into women, I could also see “Last Strike” being maybe a reference to this fight being the last time he’ll hit someone? Which is similar to what you’re saying too, hah, but yours is also closer to the baseball definition’s “three strikes and you’re out”, so!

Ja te laisserai des mots by Patrick Watson
I’ll leave you words
Underneath your door
Underneath the singing moon
Near the place where your feet pass by
Hidden in the holes of wintertime
And when you’re alone for a moment
Kiss me
Whenever you want
I choose this because it reminds him of the sweet devotion Suguru holds for his love. I see him as an eternal romantic for his wife.
Together by The XX
"I know to be there
When and where, I'll be there
You know what's to be said
We said out loud, we never said" and
"You said you don't have to speak
I can hear you
I can't feel all the things you've ever felt before
I said it's been a long time
Since someone looked at me that way
It's like you knew me
And all the things I couldn't say
Together, to be"
In short words this explains a bit of their shared understanding for each other's soul and hearts. "It's like you knew me". Also represents the built trust. It's a soft song. And at the end "Together, to be" resonates sweetly. Two hearts finding each other in the immensity of this universe. And they become one.
Le Temps de l'Amour by Françoise Hardy
It's the season of love, the time for friends and adventure
As time comes and goes, we don't worry about anything despite our wounds
For the season of love is both long and short
It lasts forever, we remember it
Because their love lasts forever. This has an old song vibe, haha. I can see them dancing in a cold morning while the sun is shyly rising in the sky. It smells like home. Suguru has his hair tied up in a messy bun, hair strands falling on his face and shoulders. He is carefree, slow dancing with reader to this song. It's one of those 'let go's moments in the comfort of your partner. His eyes close here and there taking all the sensations in. His body moves taking up space in the room. A soft smile on his face. He is simply in his element. And you're in love.
And as for Suguru himself
Cloudberry (lost wishes) by The Cure I think it's the type of song he'd listen to when alone. It's an instrumental song.
I brought you softer, more romantic songs because I think it fits their love story. Hope you enjoy it. And yeah!!!!!! Feeding from the bourgeoisie!!! I personally love this idea because it's very much me. lmao. Fuck the rich and all of that. Suguru working with art is so sweet. To be able to do your hearts desire without the strings of working to survive type of thing. To see him enjoy himself truly and follow his passions. Oh. It's a gift. Because 'he deserves everything in the world'. You are so right. Thank you!! Hope you enjoy the songs <3. I'm in love with these boys.
HI MOMO MY SWEETHEART!!!!
i. fucking. love. these. songs. AND I REALLY MEAN THAT!!!!! they're so cute and they fit them sooo so well!!! thank you for sending me these!!!
ja te laisserai des mots -HE IS AN ETERNAL ROMANTIC 1000000% and this is so fitting for him. "kiss me; whenever you want."
together - "TOGETHER, TO BE." WHAT THE FUCK MOMO..... it's perfect. (i might've made a draft for them with this as the caption). it's literally perfect i have no other words for it. thank you for sharing this with me momo it really means a lot
le temps de l'amour -oh this one is so sweet!!!!! "a soft smile on his face. he is simply in his element. and you're in love." AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA i'm crying. i really see it in my head too - the smile, the closed eyes, the hands clasped together, the marks of your love blooming on his neck mmmmmmm
cloudberry - YOU'RE SOOO RIGHT!!!! i can totally see him listening to this while watching the moon, watching the branches sway in the night breeze. mmmmm in his comfy little sweater too.
and i present you with!!! gymnopédie no. 1 by erik satie - i don't know i just really picture this playing in the background as they drink their coffee and eat their breakfast and talk about what their plans are. how sugu is gonna paint and read and how the reader is gonna have a spa day for themselves. how they're gonna go to the museum together later. what they're planning on wearing to the next rich asshole's party. they're holding hands as they're talking. reader's thumb swipes across the back of his hand and he leans down to press his lips the their cheek. it's home.
FUCKKK THE RICHHH. i'm glad u agree. and i'm sooooo in love with the museum idea the more i think of it...... i think it really suits him. and ari put the idea of him painting and putting his art on the walls too...... i think he'd be very shy about that at first but then you convince him to do it. that the world needs to his art. to see what he makes with his hands. with his heart.
THANK YOU AGAIN MOMO<3333 i truly am so so happy you're apart of the little vampire universe with me!!! please if u ever have any more thoughts my inbox is open and i have massive fucking ears!!!!!

Thinking about...Reflection by RM.
I would today like to talk about the multiple ways in which ‘Reflection’ breaks my heart and what it means to me. I seriously cannot listen to it without feeling completely broken inside and wanting to cry because I hate that Namjoon has felt like this and I also hate that I know exactly the feeling he tries to portray here. I think the way this song is constructed is incredibly beautiful. Namjoon begins with the words "I know every life's a movie..." and the entire song is constructed exactly like a movie scene.
The song begins with background noise that sets the scene: a bar, noise, talking, and as the music begins to fade in, it’s as though a camera zooms in on Namjoon, who then begins a sort of monologue. "I know every life's a movie, we got different stars and stories..." Although he wants to continue “shooting the movie (of his life) well,” he can’t help but hate himself. It’s a beautiful way to describe attempts to ‘romanticise’ your loneliness. That’s something common people say these days – to ‘romanticise’ and fall in love with your alone time, pretending you’re a ‘main character’ in a movie or a story. However, doing this also overlooks the feelings of self-hatred that come with loneliness and make it hard to continue pretending your life is a movie. He goes on to talk about why he comes to this bar in Dduksum when he hates himself. It reminded me of going out and surrounding myself with people when I felt lonely, which hardly helped and often made me feel worse and even more like I didn’t fit in. However, doing this is something of a guilty pleasure – “when I hate myself I come to Dduksum...fear, which holds my hand/it's alright if everyone is in 2s and 3s/it's good that I have a friend too." Although he hates himself, although coming to a noisy bar reminds him of the very self-hatred and loneliness consuming him, he still returns each time he feels this way. He almost romanticises fear holding his hand as his only friend – as he tries to maintain this movie-like, romantic aura around his loneliness, he ends up creating an eerily sad image.
After he says this, the instrumental break is cinematic and adds further to conjuring a scene that seems to zoom out from Namjoon – the music is emotional and sad, creating the feeling of gazing on as the world passes by around you. We observe the whole scene of the bar while also focusing on Namjoon who is alone in a crowd, and how his fear, loneliness and pain are mixed in with the scene. In the following verses, he progressively breaks down and overthinks about his loneliness, getting further into his head. Where the first verse was like a slow description of his feelings, the second verse gets more desperate as the tone of his voice and his rap flow get louder and faster: "the world is just another name for despair/my height is a diameter of the earth/I'm all my joy and hate." He desperately describes how he feels too big for his body, too distant and out of place, an outsider and alone even when he surrounds himself with people. He captures loneliness accurately with heart-wrenching lyrics: “Everyone else knows where they’re supposed to be/But only I walk without purpose” “I want to be free/I want to be free from freedom.” Loneliness, being on your own, is often considered as you being ‘free’ to do what you want without being bound to anyone, but it can also be disorienting and feel like you’re suspended in time without an idea of where you want to go. The record scratch before the instrumental break is jarring here – it’s as though he is suddenly jerked out of his thought spiral and returns to a reflective state of watching the world pass by him in his loneliness.
The last verse, which contains only one line, is the most desperate of all: "I wish I could love myself." He repeats this over and over – a solution he knows would end these feelings, but one he simply doesn't know how to reach. He seems to rap this melodically, blurring the lines between whether he’s singing or rapping – creating further this dichotomy between romanticising and loving loneliness and screaming the pain that it brings. Then the music fades out as a camera would in a movie, zooming out of this sad, upset character to the general scene before it turns black and ends the song.
I've cried to this song playing on repeat, and it now brings that memory to mind. I interpret the song in this way because my emotions while listening to it progressed in much the same way. It reminds me of a day when I was slapped in the face by the realization that I. Didn’t. Have. Friends. To add insult to injury, I decided to listen to Reflection on repeat that day. I sat there sobbing my eyes out every time Namjoon said "I wish I could love myself," because God, I wished I could love myself, but how, when I felt like no one would ever love me? The instrumental break too, I sat sobbing as the ambient music of life passing by me played behind me. It was such a painful and heartrending experience that I don’t think I'll ever forget how understood I felt by the song. There are some days where I cannot bring myself to listen to it because it brings this feeling back to me. It's truly amazing how he captures one feeling in so many different ways and yet makes it so relatable for everyone. Thus, this song reflects my own feelings of loneliness, of being alone when surrounded by so-called friends, of watching the world pass happily by around you while you stay stuck in your head wishing that for once in your life that you could just be part of that world, but you can’t.
Reflection. You reflect and think a bit too much as the world passes by you. Reflection. You watch the world as though it is reflected in a mirror – it seems like you know it and recognise it like it’s facing you, but you still can’t touch it: it’s far away, distant, alien. This song breaks me so much that I often struggle to listen to it without feeling hurt and sad, but it is so beautiful, just like everything else Namjoon writes.
-a slightly old piece of writing, but this song means a lot to me. i hope you enjoy my take on it :)

Week ending: 21 April
We are being spoilt for choice at the moment. As I've said a few times, I really do think the mid-1950s is a bit of a transitional period. Rock and roll hasn't arrived in Britian, but a lot of the songs we're now hearing sound distinctly different to the stuff you'd hear in the 1940s and earlier 1950s. Less proper and formal, in a way - long may that continue!
Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White) - Eddie Calvert (peaked at Number 1)
I loved this song first time round, and I haven't mysteriously started disliking it. I've said before, for me, if I already really like a song, I'll be strongly inclined to enjoy all covers of it, even if they're not great quality. And this is by no means that. This is a very serviceable version of a song I already liked.
To be honest, I've not much more to say that I haven't already said on the last post about Pérez Prado's version of the song. I kind of expected this version to sound a bit watered down or inauthentic, it being a British cover of a Latin song by somebody called Ronnie Hilton - a decidedly non-Hispanic-sounding name, fitting for this Preston native. But actually, it's mostly just quite a faithful cover, down to the best bit of the original, the woozy slow-down trumpet work.
If I was nit-picking I might say that it's got a bit less of a clear clave rhythm in the percussion, and maybe a little less energy in the non-trumpet instruments? It's also missing the "hyurgh" shout, which was arguably the best moment in the original. However, the trumpet makes up for all that in its sheer riotous enthusiasm, and to be honest, I think if I wasn't paying attention I might not notice all the other differences I noticed. This is just a very similar cover to the original.
I do wonder what the point of covers like that is, sometimes. A cover that dramatically changes a song's vibe or genre, that I get (it's like an AU fanfic, it's the same pleasure). But a perfectly faithful cover confuses me... the original already exists?! I guess it might have come down to some vagaries of 1950s record production and distribution logistics, and just what version of a record people could actuallly get hold of and heard on the radio, but still. Pointless, at least on the face of it.
Not that I'm complaining about more of this song. Did I mention, I love this song?
Ready, Willing and Able - Doris Day (7)
A Doris Day song I've not heard of! I'm not surprised, exactly - she did a lot, and I'm not a superfan or anything - but I am excited, because most Doris Day songs I've come across so far have been real highlights. Secret Love, in particular, I could listen to all day. Doris' voice and general persona is gorgeous, this project has really sold me on her.
We start very strong, with a fast, jazzy opening, Doris singing about how I'm ready / Willing / And able / And honey, now, it's up to you. She's up for some loving, but wants her suitor to commit and make a move. It's a confident, ballsy opening, underscored perfectly by some jazzy trumpet blasts, full big band vibes.
Doris' voice is indeed the star attraction here. She's up against some big brassy sounds and her performance is never once overpowered by it.
I'm also impressed by the modernity of Doris' strightforward proposition here, as she outright states that I'm ready, able and willing / To join you in a little fun / But I won't take second billing / I've got to be your number one. She's taking the lead, stating what she wants, and making the moves to get it, but she's also clear on her boundaries. You get the feeling that Doris is absolutely setting the pace in this relationship, and honestly, it's sexy as anything.
Even sexier, though, is the section just before the end, with the quieter, sultrier lines, all I'm ready / Oh yes, you know I'm ready, baby. It's not explicitly about sex, but it easily could be, you know? Keeps the song classy, for sure.
And then we've got the final section, as Doris blasts out lines about how Now I've stated my condition / I've got lots of ammunition. There's something rock and roll both about the attitude here, and the chord that plays under it. I know I say this periodically about lots of songs I like in this era, but you really can hear the new sounds of rock and roll percolating into places you wouldn't expect them, and this is one example, I think.
Awww, I just love this song. I had a good feeling about it, and my good feeling paid off. Go listen. Not many songs from this project end up in my liked songs list, but this one definitely will.
It's from a musical film, Young At Heart, an update of an earlier film called Four Daughters, where Doris plays opposite Frank Sinatra as the love interest of a songwriter who moves to a small town and gets into romantic hijinks as three sisters all fall for him. The plot summary sounds a little complicated, but it does sound cute - and either way, I think I'd watch it, just for the musical talent!
Stranger in Paradise - Tony Bennett (1)
Something must have been in the water this week in 1955, because here we've got another song that I know, and that definitely stands out. The tune, in particular, is beautiful and iconic. I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking I already knew it, which is the mark of a catchy hook.
It's also possibly a product of the song's somewhat complicated genesis? It's a song from a 1953 musical called Kismet, itself adapted from a 1911 play, which is an "Arabian Nights" styled fake folk tale romance, set to music by the Russian-Georgian Romantic composer Alexander Borodin, including this song, which is based on one of the Polovtsian Dances from the 1890 opera Prince Igor. This opera, itself based on a much older Russian epic poem, is about the 12th century prince of Novgorod, Igor Svyatoslavich, fighting against Cumans, a Turkic people in the south of modern-day Russia, who were also called Polovtsians. So there are loads of layers of exoticism and historical romanticisation going on even before you look at the lyrics and vibe of the song. And then the musical's duet has been turned into a solo song for a male singer, so that changes it and adds layers again.
We begin with "ooooos" from the backing singers, outlining the main theme to a lush backing of strings and woodwinds, before Tony comes in, an ambitious, soaring leap in his very first line urging his lover to Take my hand / I'm a stranger in paradise.
It's all about the transcendant feeling when you're in love, and I have to say, the lyrics are beautiful. In quick succession, we get lines about how I saw your face and I ascended / Out of the commonplace / Into the rare and about how Somewhere in space I hang suspended. It's a level of earnestness and purple prose that would normally jar, but here it feels thematically appropriate. Love takes you away from the everyday, so why shouldn't your language also be elevated away from the commonplace?
We also get the sense of a certain danger or desperation. From the idea of Tony being left starry-eyed and being lost in a wonderland, to lines that are more explicitly about how There's a danger in paradise / For mortals who stand beside an angel. Tony's lover is something else, and that has a certain fear about it, too. He's worried about getting hurt, still feeling himself a stranger, not wholly "at home" in this realm of perfection that he's somehow ascended into.
And yet the song ends hopefully, with a hope that Tony's love might open their arms to the titular stranger And tell that we need be / A stranger no more. It's a beautiful, hopeful ending, and I like it a lot! Tony really sells it, too - there's a grand sweep to his voice, but also a certain vulnerability in the lines that need it. And all that while maintaining good clear diction - important with such wordy, twisty lines.
Actually, I'm realising thinking about it that it's quite a cerebral, twisty song more generally. The lyrics are hard to follow the first time you hear them, even just in terms of syntax, and there's a certain ambiguity to it, even in what it means to be a "stranger in paradise" and how that changes over the course of the song.
I like that about the song, to be clear, and I also think you can enjoy it without making it that deep. It's pretty and catchy and Tony Bennett can sing nicely. In some ways that's all you need to know.
I could name almost any of these three as my favourite. They're all great. But only one made my liked songs playlist, and in my books, that's a surefire way to earn the final title. So, without further ado...
Favourite song of the bunch: Ready, Willing and Able

Steady yourself you greedy little gabber! I know you're nervous and ready to blow a load of words in someone lucky sumbitch's lap, but let me help you! You can't just say nonsense. Ah, there circle of laughing friends. Sounds like overheard them talking about constipation. You got this!
-
Yeah, for me though, I've unfortunately Pavlov'd myself into dumping hot logs whenever I hear any sort of flutey instrument playing.
I used to have stubborn anus. That guy would button up tight and just refuse to let the poops loose, just keep holding back and puckering shut until finally the dam would b-b-burst at the w-w-worst time and I'd flood my trousers fully and utterly. My anus would be coughing and gagging from the sudden vomit of shit like it was his first time in Brown Town (Cleveland) even though this was a weekly occurrence.
Something had to be done. I was in my mid 20's at that time, and could not keep fully loaded my undies at work, even if I did get quick with the sly bathroom panty swap.
So what'd I do? I thought of a way to soothe my ornery butt hole and let him comfortably open up for the deucies to flow. I still had my recorder from 1st grade and thought, "Hell, I was a regular ol' wunderkind with this bad boy back then, inappropriately wetting the nethers of my lady teachers with my jazzy tootling. Maybe Anus will drip the same way." And that's just what I did.
I got fully naked and straddled the terlet. I felt my anus shaking his head "no" but as soon as the screechy tooting poured from my recorder, some screeching tooting slapped out of my anus and poured freshly brewed poop into the toilet.
I was ecstatic. I'd play the Pooed Piper's melody every morning before work and hear the beautiful plops of a happy anus. I never smeared fudge at work again.
Well, that was until the boss installed a break time steam whistle like in the cartoons. Anus loves that whistle and just fully opens up during the tune. Even if I think the tank's empty, Anus will scrape up something to ship out. I'm known as the guy who poops his pants at work, and yeah, "hahahaha" whatever guys. I'm the pooper, reeal funny, guys.
But I can live with that. It's every other song or street fluter that bothers me. I can't seem to walk outside without someone on a wind instrument making me splat. Why is everyone always fluting away? My tummy tum rumbles when I even think about flutes and whistles. I mean, I sharted a bit just now because I whistled on of the S's on Anus.
Anus is getting uppity. I'm getting desperate, very desperate. I can't keep pooping on a whim like this. I shit myself probably three or four times a day, and that's not counting the times I can keep Anus puckered until I can find a toilet to plaster.
Does anyone have any advice?
-
Slow nodding. They get it, see? You fit right in! Hey, maybe the can even be your friends, but honestly I'm don't think they're up to your level. No, keep moving. I thinking more people are further down this tunnel here. New people are gonna wanna here what you got to offer in their conversations.

Girls' Generation - Girls' Generation
Hugely, massively disappointed with this album. I think next I’m gonna listen to Gee, just to hear the difference, because apparently Gee is their next actual release of new music. This album was full of your classic r&b slow jams, except sometimes they were faster and had a bit more synth to them, which I guess is progress? But this sounds nothing like the SNSD that we know and love, and it sounds way more like the 1st gens that we try to forget about. Like, A Letter From Greenland did better than this half a decade earlier. Average score of 6.1 excluding ITNW, and 6.4 with it included.
But yeah. I’d like to check out some stuff that The Grace and Sugar were doing around this time, and I think I’m gonna go do Gee right now to see what I can see.
The only song that I know from this is Into The New World (which was apparently a potential M.I.L.K. song!) so I’m going into this album pretty damn blind. I’ve heard Oh!, so let’s see if Oh! is an evolution of their sound or if their sound stays consistent.
Girls’ Generation
This sound is very … hm. The synth does a lot there
Guitars everywhere, the bass too. Rock instrumentation
Harmonies in the bridge
They do be pretending to play the instruments – I guess that fits with the rock instrumentation, at least
This feels like a less impactful version of Into The New World
Or maybe that’s just because I’m familiar with ITNW
I dunno, it just doesn’t have the same Punch to me
I’m not sure what I expected, but … not that
7/10 I guess, which is never ideal for a title track
Ooh La-La!
Haha… Here we go
I don’t even know the name for this sound? It’s like swung, super cute synths, strings everywhere
Why do I enjoy this more than the title track though
That refrain, “Ohh La-La”, that’s catchy
Note the children cheering in the background
The genre of this album is properly “bubblegum pop”, I think that’s actually the first time we’ve had that
But yes, this song is Pure bubblegum goodness
Is this supposed to be a rap break?
It’s more of a talking break
I think this is supposed to be the rap oml
Lol I totally buy that “ooh la la” though
I… don’t know what to rate this.
7/10, it’s like either a 5 or a 9 so I’ll just average the two haha
Baby Baby
Piano, strings
Pretty background vocals
This feels like a song that any of the preceding groups could’ve done
Yeah this is actually such a slow jam, except it’s faster. I guess it’s just a “jam” then, whatever that means
The background vocals really are the highlight of this song
The high note into the group chorus, this is literally so slow-jam-coded
6/10
Complete
Oh no
Is it Actual slow jam time?
It sure is
This could be S.E.S., this could be M.I.L.K., this could be Shinvi, this could be Isak N Jiyoon, this could be Sugar, this could be The Grace. But this sure wouldn’t be Red Velvet or aespa
I do hear that guitar in the chorus
5/10
Kissing You
I think I’ve heard of this song before
The do do do do do do
Strings and poppy synths
I guess we’ve hit “default sound” and we’re only five songs in
Generally I like the default bubblegum sound, but maybe I only like post-2010 default bubblegum sound
I should come up with a word for “default sound”
6/10
Merry-Go-Round
We appreciate the harmonic intro
Again, this is so slow-jam-coded
This is not the same style as Gee, or Oh!. So that means, at some point between this song and Gee, their style shifts. Which means I’m gonna have to go through with a fine-toothed-comb and find exactly that point.
Wait, no. The only thing they did in 2008 is reissue this same album with the same songs. So Gee literally is their next release. So I guess I’ve gotta listen to Gee, too, as kind of the SNSD turning point
6/10
Tears
By virtue of the name, this is a ballad
Yep
The snaps though
It’s got the piano and the guitar
How big were SM in 2007?
Like, did were SM the biggest kpop company at that point? Or did SM become the biggest kpop company because of SNSD?
Jessica’s Shine suggests that it’s the former, but also Jessica’s Shine has no idea how kpop works
Bright is a way better book, and also has a better understanding of kpop
5/10, mid
Tinkerbell
Hol up, isn’t that trademarked?
I dig the drum hits
Still feels a bit too slow jammy for me but we’ll see where it goes
“I’ll be your Tinkerbell in the sky” hmm
6/10
7989
Wait why does Taeyeon get to do the duet?
Also, this song would NOT happen on a modern kpop album
I think I mentioned that with f(x) too though, so certainly this was allowed until 2013 at least
The vocals work well together at least
Cute guitar solo, I like it
7/10, why not
Honey
Very acoustic guitar intro
And it sticks around for the verse, that’s nice
Dude whatever this synth sample is, they need to drop it
Oh no, we did not earn this modulation
Honestly the song should’ve ended at like 2:20 with that high note and the pretty vocals beneath it
6/10
Into The New World
9/10, this song makes me feel so good
(And it’s amazing how it sounds Nothing like the rest of them except I guess Girls’ Generation)

Ok so I need to gush on main about Punisher because THAT ALBUM
The more I listen to it the more I fall in love with it.
Tumblr media
And it’s like a slow burn too. At first I was really into I Know The End which is great and that I coupled with Phoebe’s cover of That Funny Feeling cause they fit so well together
but like
Then I got big into Punisher itself when I kinda got into Elliott Smith from Rick and Morty of all things, well vibing to Between the Bars and realising I’d had Everything Means Nothing to Me for years that I’d heard on Mr Robot and loved.
ANYWAYS I looked things up and saw that Phoebe had this song that’s a kind of love letter to him and I also saw about Third Eye Blind’s There’s No Hurry to Eternity which damn I didn’t expect something instrumental and with those kinds of feels from the band that made Semi-Charmed Kinda Life and like Slow Motion (don’t get me wrong, great song, but completely different vibes). Also somewhere on the internet I read the TEB song is also for Jeff Buckley whose music I love (especially his darker stuff like Dream Brother and that amazing a capella You And I, also his cover of Calling You is really impressive) but I couldn’t actually confirm that. Anyways so uh yeah Phoebe. Punisher and Between the Bars are also perfect songs to fall asleep to and that means I get more listens out of them and I think it helps them become earworms for me, idk.
So after all this I kinda get into Kyoto. Again, bit of a slow burn but I also vibe with the remix and stuff.
And more recently I also had a couple days where I kept listening to DVD Menu cause I think it burrowed deep in my brain (I blame some level of similarity with Dexter’s Blood Theme) and then when doing stuff around the house I put on the whole album cause I felt like listening to Kyoto and maybe Punisher too and I just discover the lyrics to Chinese Satellites there and then in the garden while shovelling dirt for some trees and I am floored. I vibe with this so much? Idk it’s wild. Note that chloe moriondo’s song Plastic Purse and the lyrics “I’m a punisher call me Phoebe” helped me vibe even more with her and the Kyoto remix is just hyperpop enough I put them together and it was great.
But yeah so I’m standing here getting hit by lyrics and the Moon Song bit about Tears in Heaven resonates with me personally for… reasons I won’t get into and also Lennon who was like a massive influence for me growing up like musically (I didn’t know much about his life at like 8 or 10 years old but damn did I know a lot of his songs by heaaaa— eeeh, well, I knew the music and like some words I thought were the lyrics but might have been mostly yoghurt as I very much am not a native English speaker believe it or not and didn’t speak the language properly till age… 13 to 15 ish?)
But yeah like… the whole album and lyrics and level of detail? Care? Just… the… the lyrics? And all the links between the songs on the album and songs on her previous album/EP and to other people and songs and the thread of the relationship between the artist and the fan and all the implications for us, fans, gushing over her lyrics and the references to dozens of other works??
That album is SO GOOD?!?
And I wish I could spend hours just analysing it but I can barely sit down and read the lyrics as I listen to it because these days I’m too unfocused (I really should see about that adhd diagnosis Jesus) but yeah uh
Fangirling i guess. But what else is new on tumblr?
(Also keeping the proud tradition of someone who barely uses tumblr putting random shit in the tags like they’re just an excuse for fun little phrases you can’t fit in the text — an ungodly post scriptum of some kind)

⭑ shaken, not stirred. | bartender!sukuna au.

notes: this thought of bartender!sukuna has been in my head for weeks, but it’s when my mom was giving me a lecture while i was thinking of sketching him as bartender that solidified the fact.  this may become a series thing, and you’re also welcomed to ask questions about this au (please do, it is one of my new favorite things). also i have no idea what reader will be in this au-verse, but i’m thinking a law student (am i self-projecting... perhaps), but i’m open to y’all’s suggestions and can do headcanons for whatever kind of reader y’all want to see. additionally, did i screenshot that picture for the banner from episode 14 bc i thought he looked extra good?? yeah... i did.
warnings: like... mild nsfw via music suggestions, mentions of drink tampering but not from sukuna
bonus: there’s a playlist that goes with this, here.

there’s something about 6′4 sukuna shaking a cocktail shaker to toxic by britney spears that just.... chef’s kiss.  no i will not elaborate, just think about it.
sometimes, you think he’s taller than 6′4, but that’s just his platform doc martens.
god, the man chewing on a thin stirring/cocktail straw or just holding it in his jaw, in between his teeth and watch his lips purse around it. he’ll take it out to talk, of course.
the waist apron he wears only emphasizes his shoulder-to-hip ratio
the best seat in the house is literally anywhere you can see him??? like behind him, you can see his back muscles flex, but in the front, you can see his tattoos on his chest peeking out from the fact that he is not going to ever button the top two buttons on his shirt. also, he leaves his sleeves pushed up to his elbows on most nights
tongue piercing, check. both of his ears are pierced, but he tends to change up whether he has just one in or both.
you find out about the tongue piercing when he does his taste-testing of the drinks he mixes, via the straw drop (take a black plastic straw, dips the straw into the glass, covers the unsubmerged straw end with his index finger to create suction, lifts the straw to his lips, releases his index finger, and "tastes" the cocktail). usually he’ll put the straw in his mouth, but if he notices you’re watching, well, there goes the tongue piercing.
he wears rings, constantly. at least two, one on each hand.
he is a megan the stallion fan (and nicki minaj too, but i digress) and knows most of the words to her songs. his personal favorite is crybaby, and you being his s/o, well, he’ll sing it word for word to you while making drinks at home. he leans in and whispers the real intense/filthy parts like (”uh-uh, don’t fuck me like that fuck me like this”) yeah. he looks like he’s talking normal, but the way his voice drops more and he whispers??? goodbye world.
sometimes he likes to tease too much while he’s singing and will lean in to lick the shell of your ear or maybe nip your earlobe, who knows
and then he’ll pass your drink like nothing ever happened
also has doja cat on his playlist, but yuji is to blame for that
cherry knot tying king
casual friday for the staff at said bar/establishment, and he’s coming in jeans and a loose tank top, you know, the ones with the drops on the sleeves on the sides??
sukuna is extremely aware of what’s happening in the room at all times. some creep hitting on someone? intervene.  someone trying to spike a drink?? he catches them in the act.  someone spiked a drink???? he just looks at the recipient, tells them to switch with him, and before they can say anything, they have a new, safe drink while he has the tampered one.
does he grab offenders whether they’re being following creeps, coming on too strong, or trying to tamper with drinks by the scruff of their necks and carry them out personally? yes, yes he does. if you’re there, he’ll wink at you before he gives him a kick on the ass for good measure as he pushes them out the door.
he makes custom drinks for people, like he’ll ask what’s your preference in taste like sweet, strong or whatever, plus two other questions that seem unrelated but he’s managed to make the perfect drink for you
again, he’s highly aware of his surroundings, so if you’re looking at his back, he knows, and will look over his shoulder to smirk at you, looking you right in the eyes.  (SHEESH)
thinking of him coming in on one of his days off with a ballcap and a tight, dry fit t-shirt on, so by the time he’s working, his hair is a lil messy, and you better thank heaven for that dry fit t-shirt because MUSCLES BABE
is working on his own lil drink recipe book, which means you either get to be his taste tester, or taste it when he kisses you
this man knows he’s hot, he’s a smug shit about it, and works it to his favor. does he tie cherry knots at work because the women at the bar go crazy and give him extra tips?? yes
but if you’re there, oh sweetheart, he’s actually going to give you the cherry before putting the knot in his mouth to tie, BYE
also.... hehe, had to mention this but uh... you could bounce a quarter off that ass of his
he comes home from a late/graveyard shift, and just crawls into bed, smelling like syrup and cologne, just... run your fingers through his hair and he’ll be out in a few minutes
occasionally, he will sleep on the couch as not to disturb you, but the man really is too big to be sleeping on a couch.
if his shift starts at 6, he comes in at 5, hair a little damp from the shower he just took, and in a clean dry fit shirt and tight slacks or dark colored jeans. he’ll either work in the dry fit shirt, or he has a button up he can change into in the back
also??? really decent and will help you get stains out of your clothes if it’s something he can swing to clean in the sink like a shirt
otherwise, he’ll write what you need on a napkin and pass it to you
fucking hates white claws with a passion, ngl
during particularly slow moments at work, you might be able to catch him plucking a few cords on the guitar that sits on stage or poking around with the piano (look, i think he’s very capable of playing instruments and his fingers are good for it)
painted nails!! they’re usually a dark purple or black, occasionally a dark red. sometimes they’re clear, but he’s gotten the idea from when he supposedly was in his emo phase (and learned to keep something on them from breaking from his younger brother’s friend nobara)
likes to dance with you to the songs on his playlist in his minimalistic kitchen in between cooking or making drinks
at least once a month, you can catch him in a necklace
during the winter months, tight turtlenecks or ribbed long sleeved shirts are his best friends
he also drives a very nice and sleek black car (i’d imagine it’s like a black audi TT or an audi R8) that sits in the back of the parking lot and has a habit of turning his keys on his index finger as he walks towards the building/into work.
bartending might have started as a part time job when he was in college, but it’s something he’s just kept up over the years
man fills up a lot of space and knows it, even when he’s leaning on his back countertop during breaks or on the bar to take orders with his arms folded over his chest
ANYWAYS. be nice to your local bartender because he can bite. take that as you will.

Analysis of Throw down Lyrics !
I will start this by a simple method first the MV then the lyrics/instrumental.
“NO” in my dream
I am making you cry again, I am being blamed
“NO” the hesitation I killed
Is holding its breath and sniffing out lies
So I think it’s interesting how Shidou uses the circumstantial complement of place “in my dream”, insinuating that these events “I am making you cry again, I am being blamed” could haunt him in his dream…
Shidou proclaim to have killed the hesitation that sniffing out lies <— his own lies
So we can understand that what killed the hesitation is the fact that when he sniffed the lies he kept them and didn't let them go or let them be heard by someone.
BUT all these sentences are in denial “NO”, so that’s meant that first the place where the events
“I am making you cry again, I am being blamed” happened not in his dream but that everything is the reality. And lastly, that he in fact, didn’t kill the hesitation, that he didn’t keep his lies…
So in a way, he wishes that everything was just a bad dream…
Tock-tock, tock-tock, tock-tock… tells me, the reason it’s ok to be here
Won’t disappear even if I stop
“Tock-Tock” not sure if I’m saying some bullshit but Tick is the start and tock is the end right?
Shidou repeats the end again and again (the end of what ?)
“Tell me” : Shidou talks to someone and even asks for advice ? (Probably himself)
“the reason it’s ok to be here
Won’t disappear even if I stop” not sure but it could be that even if he stops he will still have that will. (Spoiler: to save the dear one)
After you cry a lot, of course it will end up that way
Choose, how to live your life, we only live once
Shidou has a lot of regrets. He knew what he was doing from the start but still did.
Because he knew that if he didn’t try he would had bigger regret giving up
“Throw down” connecting you with me,
To keep you alive, you are still living
“Throw down” the invitation that I can’t take back,
Lying, replacing with hope
Same thing with the “NO”, just replace the meaning of the sentence with it.
What ? Give up his connection with his dear one ? that just doesn't fit right ?
Then let's look at it from another point of view.
« Throw down » can be heard as « Slow down »
Then everything makes sense.
The time and its speed has always been in his song (tock-tock) so then he will try to keep the connection with the dear one. To keep them alive, Shidou slows down their death.
The invitation that I can’t take is an allusion to life and death, not sure exactly if Shidou is life or death… probably both ?
“Throw down” it’s ok, that’s enough
Can’t stay away
Please don’t forgive me
That’s why I want this to end
“Throw down”
I usually point this but the way Shidou sing this part seems desperate he really want to throw down but instead just slow down (it’s clear in my head only the baddies or the mentally ill will understand)
So in the end, the thing he made slow down is his action/guilt/feeling of wanting this to end.
After stabbing you with my words, the blood started to flow
And slowly stained my white
Hey, you remember what it feels like?
The feeling to take away in order to give
Quite simply, Shidou’s actions hurt people.
«My white » could be his morality(doctor’s coat)
He kills to save.
It becomes more and more diluted, it doesn’t have any flavor even if it’s chewed
If it’s not needed, I’m not interested
Nothing matters for him except the success of his plan. I think he may have some ED.(he don’t finish his plate, he only focus on his plan.((also could be the start of his bad habit to hurt himself in a way ?))
Here and there is such a waste
There’s no meaning in it, yes and no, it doesn't matter. It’s all how you say it
Bla bla bla the usua- WAIT ?
“It’s all how you say it”
Who is he talking about ? So the dear one knew about all of this ?
“Such a waste” Shidou is quite cold now about all of this… or maybe too emotional ?
Because someone told him that ? Strange but I can’t do anything about this right now so…
“Throw down”, someone’s value
Cannot be the same as another
“Throw down” should choose between superiority or inferiority
Has come true, stabbing the despair to death
Ok so Slow down is more like a “hey slow down, how could you think that the life of someone has more values that another” feel like he is trying to catch on his moral compass again.
There are so many truths, as there are so many lives
The end that has already begun, I will finally be saved once it comes true
Basically, he just wishes for his dear one to die.
Shidou is tired from all of this..
(Maybe he was talking to the person he wanted to save)
Now slowly close your eye, put your regret on display
Wish for being there for someone
With the same expression no matter who comes
I don’t feel scared because I don’t know
Not sure but can you see your regrets if you close your eyes ?
He means that he wishes to be the doctor he was…
Having a purpose to help the society…
The same expression is the irresistible smile he give off everytime <3
And the end is about the outcome, he can’t be scared because that was a foolish action from the start he can’t lose something that was destined to be lost.
“Throw down” ethics is a delusion
I’m still guilty even if the morning comes
“Throw down” emotions with no color
I wonder if I can die with it still left
Now is the part where “Throw down” really means “Throw down” (clue: the room is with something broken on the ground he probably “Throw down”but it’s different from before the throw down is the start of the sentence like I give up on ethics because it’s a delusion and He’s still guilty bla.bla..bla…
But I wonder if "I can still die with what’s left". I think what is left must be guilt or something like that…
“Throw down” connecting you with me,
To keep you alive, you are still living
“Throw down” the invitation that I can’t take back,
Lying, replacing with hope
So now, Shidou did give up/failed his plan.
He stopped lying to everyone including himself
“Throw down” it’s ok, that’s enough
Can’t stay away
Please don’t forgive me
That’s why I want this to end
“Throw down”
Can't be more clear.
Now I should do the PV but I don’t want to.
At least for tonight…
Thanks for reading that much. I would gladly hear about your own interpretation too !

𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐋 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬
Oh boy so this is gonna make people really mad. I have listened to a total of 52 songs from the Diabolik Lovers franchise (that I could find) and ranked them for the hell of it. For this ranking I will be including all character songs, openings (both anime and game) along with the remixes. I will not be counting solo versions of songs (eg. Gin no bara), soundtrack bgm or the endings themes.
My ranking is based on these things:
how well does the song fit the character/s or game, both in lyrics and aesthetic
the overall production and performance of the song
is the song a bop? would I willingly listen to it again?
Couple of disclaimers: I do not speak Japanese so I will be crediting the translations of each song as I go through them along with any think pieces / essays that I come across. If there is any song I missed, please let me know and I’ll slot it into the rankings, its hard to find one source that has all the songs recorded. Finally, just a reminder because I know I'm gonna make someone mad, this is my list! If you don't like it make your own or ignore mine, I'm only one person and my opinion is not final!
With that in mind, my rankings are below the cut
*Least Best*
These are the songs I will probably never listen to again. I have a few gripes with them that I'll talk about in my explanation.
52. 誓いのカンパネラ (Chikai no Campanella)
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation~
This song is just super underwhelming overall. The guitar is my favourite thing about the song but that's it. There is so much build up for a boring chorus. The lyrics don't have much for me either.
51. 血戦のDies irae (Kessen no Dies irae)
Tsukinami Brothers
~translation~
On the opposite end, this song is so overwhelming. There are so many elements to follow and its hard to keep up. This is the first time I'll bring it up but the volume of the voices is so quiet compared to the backing track, its frustrating. The lyrics is what brings it up a notch as it talks about the day of wrath (dies irae) as the day the founders take over. I was also low key hoping to hear some version of the dies irae song hidden in the background but I couldn't hear any.
50. S.O.S-ΑtoΩ-
Tsukinami Brothers
~translation~
This song just feels so forgettable, I just feel like there isn't much to comment on. There are some interesting lyrics sprinkled out like comparing literal self mutilation to abstinence. Also the actual delivery of 'S ah O ah S ah', I can't take it seriously.
49. Dystopia
Kino
~translation~
This had an interesting start because I hadn't heard anything similar for DL but then after a few lines the tone change was just a nope for me. Again, Kino's voice is super quiet and the constant barrage of all these instruments that don't really gel together its confusing. Overall, it didn't leave much of an impression and I couldn't really visualised DL in the song.
48. 吸愛ラビリンス (Kyūai Labyrinth)
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation~
Praise for the saxophone! Props to that because it shines here and is really the only memorable thing besides that final line of the chorus. The song does give the vibe of the Vandead Carnival with its more playful energy though. The lyrics feel really typical, like there are so many times I read lyrics about drinking blood before I get bored.
47. 極限(UNLIMITED) BLOOD -Remix ver.-
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation w/ original ver.~
I don't think I really need to hear EDM/dubstep and Diabolik Lovers again thanks. It feels super dated and the vocoded singing is a little much for my taste. Good source material and the stripped back vocals at some points is quite nice.
46. 愛しきPain (Itoshiki Pein)
Subaru
~translation~
First off please never let me see Subaru near a fedora again thanks. Overall I felt bored with this song, like its nice, but that it. There are similar sounding songs that just hit home similar themes a lot stronger later on. The best part of this song is the spoken word but it feels weird for Subaru to be singing such a slow song.
45. Luv Apple Juice
Ruki & Azusa
~translation~
Yes, I am counting Ruki's spoken word, its my list. Lyrics are a must read with references to Adam, Eve and Eden throughout. Again, the voices are super quiet and with how fast paced the instrumentals are its annoying. The tempo also backfires because these are two of the more 'chill' characters. The last complaint is that the speed of Ruki's speaking compared to Azusa's singing just isn't right.
44. DIE IS CAST
Kou & Yuma
~translation~
This has to be my least favourite opening to a song, the staccato is just really grating to me. The way I'd describe the chorus is loud, the same note over and over again isn't appealing. The lyrics are an interesting read but nothing feels super important. The highlight of the song is the pre-chorus, thanks production!
43. カレイドナイト (Kaleido Night)
Kanato & Subaru
~translation~
This song is just generic, like overall. The sound, the lyrics, the production. There just wasn't must for me to listen to without zoning out.
*Average*
These songs don't leave too much of a lasting impression on me, but I still enjoy them.
42. 苺の罪 (Ichigo no Tsumi) (strawberry sin)
Reiji
~translation~
First of the generic rock songs! I couldn't really find much in the lyrics of note I think the actual performance of the song is my favourite element here.
41. 真夜中の饗宴( MIDNIGHT PLEASURE) -Remix ver.
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation w/ original~
One the best part of the original is that opening section with the steps, it creates some nice anticipation for the coming song. The chorus this time round feels a little low energy after the hype of the pre-chorus. After watching the actual opening with the remix, I kind of wish they had the voice over, the song is so chill the last chorus could have it to make it feel more grandiose.
40. ZERO
Subaru
~translation~
Second generic rock song, this time it actually suits Subaru's brand! The lyrics do have some hints to Subaru as a character which is better. My sustaining thought is that this sounds like an off brand Arcadia.
39. Bloody★Mayim★Mayim
Sakamaki Brothers
~translation~
This has to have one of the strongest hooks for DL. For how many people sing in the song, it's easy to keep track of and the chemistry between them all is in sync. The main issue is that it feels like its missing some element to make it shine, the lyrics aren't in-depth too which brings it down another peg. The bridge/interlude is the best part though as I can visualise some mini story within the song here.
38. ADDICTED (2) PHANTOM
Ayato
~translation~
This song would be so much higher if I felt like it was more memorable cuz the lyrics here really shine. My interpretation is that this is Ayato questioning where his love stops and his sadistic nature to satiate his desires begin, can he separate the two? He both loves and despises the idea of draining his s/o dry. Another gripe with the song is that its not quite Ayato's aesthetic sonically.
37. Kindan no 666 (Three Six)
Kou & Azusa
~translation~
What puts this song so low is the majority of the instrumental, it takes a backseat here when I feel there could be more added. Props to percussion, drums are great though. After watching the MB opening so many times its hard to not see DL. Lyrics match with this one line here describing Kou in a nutshell:
"Sin spread from mouth to mouth, saying 'I’ll be gentle' pulls the trigger on a casual disaster!"
36. Iolite (アイオライト )
Shu
~translation~
I don't know why the producers associate electro-pop with Shu, I can't really see it much. I think they should have gone full glitch-pop instead considering how the song does a deep dive into his mind and thought process. Again, I think the voice is also quiet here but the instrumentals have some great moments, especially the strings.
35. 常夜KNOW UNDERSKIN
Sakamaki
~translation~
Well this gives Sakamaki vibes, nice guitar! Again, I like how it isn't overwhelming despite the amount of people involved. Lyrics aren't super impactful but super catchy.
34. 冷たい血 (Tsumetai Chi)
Ruki
~translation~
You have to read the lyrics while reading this, please! Its surprisingly wholesome and emotional overall. Again, there is the issue of the voice being way to quiet as the instrumentals swallow him whole after the second clock tick. The delivery is really well timed and production does a great job adding elements that works with the lyrics. There is a subtle echo to the voice that feels super enchanting as he comes to terms with the fact that he has fallen in love. Biggest drawback obviously is that this is just spoken word.
33. KISS♥MARK
Shu
~translation~
This song delves into the more perverse side of Shu, but we haven't really reached the level of Laito (we'll get there). The phone feels a little out of character but it suits that narrative. The straight cut out of music for the intermission was a bit abrasive but the transition back to music makes me forget about that with how slick it is. At least its better than a generic rock song.
32. カモフラージュ (Camouflage)
Shu & Laito
~translation~
What a great match up for subject matter, my interpretation is a denial and inability to accept oneself, ultimately using a mask to hide. So please look up the lyrics for some gems. However, after the 'against the blood' nothing really hit that same point sonically, furthermore its not the most aesthetically fitting for the two characters.
*Great*
These songs I actively enjoy, think about and do listen to occasionally and would recommend you check it out too.
31. >REDRUM<-
Ayato & Subaru
~translation~
This song is full of anagrams in the lyrics, I mean look at the song title. Its super catchy and is hard to forget about. The bridge is the weakest part of this song but it is made up by the distortion of vocals after the final chorus.
30. Fanatic of Night
Sakamaki Brothers
~translation~
Well time to party, talk about a bop and a half! Its just so fun, even though its to exactly DL to me, but that's Lunatic Parade for you. Shout out to the guitarist and percussion once again.
29. Bad Howling
Shu, Ayato & Kou
~translation~
This is super catchy, its nice to hear Kou in the opening song this time round, it spices things up. Theres some really nice elements played with the vocals as they sing over one another that is really well balanced. The biggest peg down is that I don't get super DL vibes and the lyrics aren't the deepest.
28. I.M.I.T.A.T.I.O.N. G.A.M.E
Kino
~translation~
Overall this song is a little generic and doesn't sound like DL but! There is a lot to love here too. Starting off with the performance, I really like the vibrato in his voice and the decent of notes at the end of the chorus is just, yes. It a nice hook and the lyrics are pretty good too. My only other complaint is that the drums mask some smaller elements in the background of the song which would have been nice to hear more in the forefront.
27. 極限(UNLIMITED) BLOOD
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation~
This is where the rankings get pretty hard cuz I wish this was higher but oh well. the dramatic shift from the opening piano to the song is so abrupt but it gets you pumped. The intermission does a good job of changing things up without cutting tension. The lyrics themselves seem to be from the view of the Adam project during more blood and the unquenchable thirst they get in the story.
26. アルカディア (Arcadia)
Ayato
~translation~
Immediately I get Ayato vibes from this song and the rapping does help too with a nice flow that isn't too jarring from the rest of the song. These lyrics are basically Addicted2Phantom on steroids, I can't see anyone else other than Ayato in them.
25. Kekkyoku Night
Ayato
~translation~
Don't know why but the guitar melody just seems like I had heard it before but I can't put my finger on it. The bass is super slick here and I really enjoy it. The vocal distortion at the start of the verse sets a scene for him to hunt down this person and its a narrative choice. The main issue is that I wish there was a little more pizzaz to the chorus.
24. Kaikan DEATH-TRUCTION
Kanato
~translation~
Spoilers but I have placed both a Kanato's songs pretty high up so this was a little bit of a let down after the other two. The main issues here is that I don't really get too much of Kanato in the song and the yelling before the chorus is a little much. This, to me, is a self reflection from Kanato which is a good switch up from his last two songs. Overall, the song is abrasive in a good way that isn't overwhelming and the 8-bit section is my fave.
23. 血濡れた密会 (BLOODY SABBATH)
Laito
~translation~
Oh boy, look these lyrics up for a good time. This song is about his hook up with a women with the song getting progressively darker as it goes on. Nice psycho reference but I don't know if it does much in the end. Really catchy hook and the escalation of the final chorus is just so good. Also I'm just going to leave this line from the song here:
“You wend all out with the rodeo girl play? So then, let’s grind!!!”
22. 幻日理論-Parhelion Logic
Ayato
~translation~
This song is meant to be kind of an open letter to Cordelia and my word these lyrics are haunting. It fits the vibe of Haunted Dark Bridal so well, super strong overall. I just wish there was a stronger performance vocally.
21. 暴言シンドローム (Seiron Syndrome)
Yuma
~translation~
Yuma, to me has some pretty good observation skills and its really highlighted here. The first line just hits the nail on the head in terms of how rough he is both in and out of the bedroom. This song is the best of the 'generic rock' with production being really smooth despite the high energy, it matches him really well. First line:
The pain of your sprained neck won’t subside
20. 蠱惑のParade (Kowaku no Parade)
Reiji & Kanato
~translation~
We got another catchy banger here! This song just screams 'the two of us are here to hunt you down and we won't stop till we get a taste.' I mean this song is super pleasing aesthetically and great lyrics to boot!
19. KILLYOU,AGAIN
Azusa
~translation~
The strings are an immediate attention grabber and its hold it throughout the whole song. Super catchy, and these lyrics are Azusa, especially this chorus. Id be interested to hear what people think about the second verse in particular cuz there's a lot to read into:
"In a worn out state of mind, no matter how many nights we question it... We’ve idealised too much."
18. SQueeze…
Subaru
~translation~
Okay before anything else, the squeeze at the start is goofy, I can't take it seriously. Anyway, I can't help but tap my foot to this song. Third times the charm, finally hitting Subaru's aesthetic to a T. The voice is a little quiet on the track but what takes over just sounds so good. The contrast of the bell and the guitar is just, yes thank you. The pre-chorus is a nice mix up to the status quo and these lyrics are great too.
17. 愛の檻 (Ai no Ori)
Ayato & Laito
~translation~
The opening is a nice tone setter for a haunting head bopper. These voices work together so well, just like how the sirens work with the strings. The singular violin during the bridge is great, praise to anyone who can do that my god. The string motif climaxes at the final chorus and it creates an awesome song!
16. 月蝕(Eclipse)
Kou, Yuma & Azusa
~translation~
Well we have a nice build up ballad here. The opening is a little out of place but I forget about it as it builds to this final chorus with the tempo getting faster and faster. The stripped back production also ends up aiding the song in the end with its punches and message. Speaking of which; I get the idea this is about watching some either currently or in retrospective how their personality changes after turning into a vampire; a loss of innocence. How fitting for the Mukami's.
“Despising the sunlight that filters through the blinds is only inevitable, I suppose”
*Faves*
This is what I think the best of the best is. It reflects the themes, ideas and characters of Diabolik Lovers in the best way possible. When people ask me what music from the franchise to listen to, I point to these songs.
15. Count off
Kino
~translation~
There is so much to talk about here, this is a mix of singing and spoken piece and it works so well for me. The delivery over this contagious beat I can't help but get hints of a k-pop vibe here. The movement to singing then vocoded voice are interesting and fun. The bridge switch up too is great, my only wish is that the choir hand a little more presence in the final chorus cuz its fun the first times round, it would be a nice call back.
14. A Certain Prophet's Fate [とある預言者の、運命 Toaru Yogensha no Unmei]
Reiji
~translation~
I can visualise a Nutella Kookie moodboard with this opening alone. To me, this is Reiji explain his views on women with allusions to Faust too, not the Ikemen version relax. there are some cool allusions to his mother in the lyrics too. The bass is so cool to listen out for and the guitar nodding to the chorus at the end is a nice way to end. I was just hoping for a little continuation to the opening like Reiji finding this person escaping on horseback.
13. CHAOS☆PARTY
Laito
~translation~
Aaaaaand another innuendo song from Laito, what a surprise! The jazzy, circus-pop vibes are super fun and catchy, I love it. It's like an upgraded version of Bloody Sabbath to me. The distortion on the guitar is also great to listen out for.
"Don’t decide where’s the critical point, grind as you feel it,
Till the moon oh, mockingly"
12. Mr.ButterflyMask
Reiji
~translation~
The opening may be cliche but it works so well, this is such a deep dive into Reiji's psyche; his mother, inferiority complex and village burning to name a few. The actual song is easy to remember which makes it even better here, the descending notes at the end of the chorus is a highlight.
"Burnt black, that awful land mark"
11. 真夜中の饗宴 (MIDNIGHT PLEASURE)
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation~
The song to start it all, thank god it's such a highlight. I get so hyped from hearing the opening footsteps; mirroring the prologue with You stepping into the mansion for the first time. I feel so nostalgic for this and I'm hyped to play the game every time I hear this. The spoken section is the high point in terms of the HDB aesthetic but these lyrics maaaannn:
"With a scream that shatters the moon itself I’ll give you this extraordinary pain called “love”!"
10. Guilty×Guilty!!!
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation~
I'm gonna get crucified for putting this above midnight pleasure but my list and this is my fave game op. The only peg down is the lyrics but it makes up so much for the actual sound variation. The unnerving energy from this scifi-y noise, it screams danger with the Tsunami arrival. The variation between the two verses in robs what places it high and the bridge is excellent to boot.
9. Farewell Song
Shu
~translation~
If I had to make one song recommendation outside of DL with this list it is this song here. The lyrics and melody match up the same way and both are strong in their own right. Onto the song, these lyrics really shine wrangling with ideas and the thought process of depression; something that hits close to home for me. With the inclusion of the destructive nature vampires its truely impactful. The sound of the song aids these lyrics too while all sounding like Shu.
Without pause, the drops of a drizzle had begun to weep...
...Comforting the screams of the things you’ve touched"
8. Mr.SADISTIC NIGHT
Shu, Ayato & Subaru
~translation~
This is my favourite opening of all the games and anime and it is the most on theme with the DL franchise, not just the one game. The guitar rifts at the start are just sooooo iconic. The actual line "Mr Sadistic Night" is delivered so well too. I mean the song speaks for itself. I will make the observation though that this song is the epitome of kids unknowingly singing a song with dirty lyrics.
"If I’m so aroused by the snare of your enticing blood
Tonight, as I thrust deep into you, a lust for death awakens from within you!"
7. 悪魔的(Devil's)Spire!!!!
Kou
~translation~
This song is just Kou at his best, I can imagine him singing this at a concert as a debut single. It has all the elements of a catchy pop song with some sinister elements that just reflects his personality. Production has my praise here too. The song seems to be a friends with benefits situation Kou has as he recounts the tale. Also, more innuendos:
"In the deep red velvet sheets, Do you want to taste my forbidden syrup?"
6. Operation X
Tsukinami Brothers
~translation~
Haven't seen these guys in a while! You can tell production had fun adding all these medical sounds in the back like the sirens and heart monitor. The song itself is super catchy too, that bass just hits you at the core! The lyrics look like the Tsukinami's observation of You as she has become entangled with all these vampires and the situation just seems to spiral even more out of control.
"The risk spreads further the deeper you get involved...
...The more you give up, the more that guy mocks you"
5. GRATEFUL★DEAD★MARCH
Kanato
~translation~
Production had fun again, you can tell. It's more upbeat there is still a sinister vibe here. The constant switch ups within the song all flow so well. I feel genuine despair listening to this chorus, like Kanato is mocking or toying with me before going in for the kill. My only complaint is that the slowing down at the end is a bit of a mood killer.
4. 切断★舞踏会 (KIRISAKI CARNIVAL)
Kanato
~translation~
In terms of character aesthetic, this is sheer perfection. There is a narrative within this song that you need to look at the lyrics for the best experience. The sound effects act as a good way to heighten the story as they match the lyrics. One moment to note it both the chorus and pre-chorus as they act as the extreme ends on Kanato's personality and it creates a great dichotomy when placed together.
3. Q.E.D.
laito
~translation~
My favourite solo song, and the one I constantly visit the most. Laito is a complex character and this song does a self reflection in the best way possible.I would also recommend reading this great analysis by everything laito because I can't do a proper analysis justice. For the song itself, the piano is a great mood setter as it acts as if we are approaching Laito as he plays the piano about to go into one of his many monologues to himself. The intercut from the piano to the guitar is abrupt but it works so well as if there are crack in his facade showing through. The change back to the piano is great too and isn't distracting in any way. I also think this is such an emotional performance, like I can feel the sadness and despair along with almost a self deprecating humour to the delivery. Top notch stuff
2. 罠-If You’re Diablo- (Wana -If You’re Diablo-)
Mukami Brothers
~translation~
I want mention first off that the spoken word from Ruki is such an aid here, the pace is slower, more haunting and despair-inducing in tone. The speaking adds a nice break to the vocals. The chorus in particular packs such a punch its kind of nice to lie on the ground and just let the song envelop you. The lyrics give the impression that there is a mutually destructive relationship here with the Mukami's mentioning of betrayal yet they suck the blood of this person. There is also a feeling of hopelessness that the Mukami's know they can never achieve their goal of becoming Adam.
"I'd been resigned to become Adam since who-knows-when...
I continue to hate this fate, my prayers in zero"
1. Gin no Bara
Sakamaki Brothers
~translation~
And we're finally at the end! This song encapsulates everything that Diabolik Lovers is. Vocally, it's really catchy with such a somber vibe, because that's what DL is. It's a dark series but you can see that darkness with each backstory, the actions these characters take and just the overall hopelessness in this one song. The Sakamaki's all singing together packs such a punch too. There are so many gems in these lyrics, to literally acknowledging the pain and suffering their mothers' caused and coming to terms with the actions they have committed as they fall in love.
"The proof remains on your neck while you sleep quietly Even if an eternal curse awaits me beyond those overflowing tears
I now hold this love and pain in my chest"
*SHOUTOUTS*
I want to give a huge shout out to the following people. They have helped immensely with translation and just overall accessibility to the songs because they would be 1000 times more harder to find without them.

One final note, I would recommend listening to these with headphones because the audio sometimes does that thing where it jumps from ear to ear and it creates the best effect to be more involved in the atmosphere.
