stoic and stony on the outside, but loving and soft on the inside. he's a golden retriever in a doberman/mastiff's body (babies--both human and animal--make him cry)

Germany ranks fourth in the Olympic Games medal count, having won 922 medals in both Summer and Winter Olympic Games since 1896. The country has hosted international sports events such as the 1936 and 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin and Munich, the 1936 Winter Olympic Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the 1974 and 2006 FIFA World Cup. It will host the UEFA Euro 2024.

Soccer

Soccer is the most popular sport in Germany. The Bundesliga (“federal league”) is the top professional soccer league. Clubs such as FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, RB Leipzig, SV Werder Bremen, and VfB Stuttgart take part in it. The most successful team is Bayern Munich, having won thirty-two Bundesliga titles.

The German men’s national soccer team won the Olympic Games in 1976, the World Cup in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014 and the UEFA Euro in 1972, 1980, and 1996. The women’s national team is also a world power, having won the Olympic Games in 2016, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2003 and 2007 and the UEFA Women’s Euro in 1989, 1995, and 2001, making Germany the only country to have won both the men’s and women’s World Cup and European titles.

Handball

Germany, together with Denmark, is regarded as the birthplace of handball, as the first match took place in Berlin. The men’s national team has won the Olympic Games once, the IHF Wold Men’s Handball Championship three times, and the EHF Euro twice. The most successful team in the Handball-Bundesliga is THW Kiel.

Basketball

The most successful clubs in the Basketball-Bundesliga are Alba Berlin, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Brose Bamberg, and USC Heidelberg. Notable German basketball players include Dirk Nowitzki, Elias Harris, Linda Frölich, Shawn Bradley, and Tim Ohlbrecht.

The German men’s national basketball team has won only one international gold medal at the 1993 Eurobasket, as well as one silver and two bronze medals. The women’s national team has won only one medal in international competitions, a bronze one at the 1997 Eurobasket.

Ice hockey

Germany has hosted the Ice Hockey World Championships seven times and the Ice Hockey European Championships four times. The men’s national team has never won an international competition, but has won seven silver medals, and is ranked seventh in the world.

Motorsports

Germany is one of the leading motorsports countries, having manufactured countless race winning cars. Notable Formula One champions include Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, and Sebastian Vettel.

The country hosts the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, a sports car racing series based in Germany, with rounds in other European countries. Since 1995, only German car brands are allowed to compete.

Winter sports

Germany is also very successful in winter sports, being the only country in the world to have four bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton tracks. It has won more medals in bobsledding than any other country in the world, if those won by East and West Germany are included.

The country also dominates biathlon, luge, and skeleton thanks to athletes such as Sven Fischer and Uschi Disl in biathlon, Felix Loch and Natalie Geiseberger in luge, and Anja Huber and Kerstin Jürgens in skeleton.

Notable skiers include Tobias Angerer in cross-country skiing, Martin Schmitt in ski jumping, Eric Frenzel in Nordic combined, and Katja Seizinger in alpine skiing. Claudia Pechstein is renowned in speed skating and Katarina Witt in figure skating. 

Tennis

The two most successful German tennis players of all time are Boris Becker and Steffi Graf. The former won six Grand Slam titles, and the latter won twenty-two, becoming the only tennis player to win all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same year.

Cycling

Jan Ullrich is one of the greatest riders, together with Tony Martin in individual time trial races and André Greipel among road sprinters. Germany has hosted the start of the Tour de France four times.

Graben - Dreifaltigkeitssäule, „Pestsäule“

Die Wiener Pestsäule ist eine Dreifaltigkeitssäule am Graben. Sie wurde nach der Pestepidemie von 1679 errichtet und 1693 geweiht. Die 21 Meter hohe barocke Säule ist eines der bekanntesten und markantesten plastischen Kunstwerke im Stadtgebiet.

1679 wütete in Wien eine der letzten großen Pestepidemien. Auf der Flucht aus der Stadt gelobte Kaiser Leopold I. die Errichtung einer Gnadensäule bei Beendigung der Pestepidemie. Noch im selben Jahr wurde eine provisorische Holzsäule des Bildhauers Johann Frühwirth (1640–1701) eingeweiht. 1683 ging der Auftrag für die Marmorausführung an Mathias Rauchmiller, der jedoch bereits 1686 starb und einige Engelfiguren hinterließ. Danach kamen zahlreiche Neuplanungen, unter anderem auch von Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, auf den das Programm der Sockelfiguren zurückgeht. Letztlich wurde die Projektleitung Paul Strudel übertragen, der sich auf das Programm des Theateringenieurs Lodovico Ottavio Burnacini stützte. Burnacini sah unterhalb der Dreifaltigkeit eine Wolkenpyramide mit Engelsfiguren und einer Figur des Glaubens vor, vor der ein betender Kaiser Leopold kniet. Unter den beteiligten Bildhauern waren auch Tobias Kracker und Ignaz Bendl. 1693 konnte die Säule dann geweiht werden.

Trotz der langen Bauzeit, der Planänderungen und der Anzahl der beteiligten Bildhauer macht das Denkmal einen homogenen Eindruck. Während der Planungszeit hat es sich von einer simplen und konservativen Andachtssäule zu einer hochbarocken Inszenierung gewandelt, in der ein Geschehen theatralisch erzählt wird. Damit stellt es den Übergang in eine neue künstlerische Phase dar. Die Wiener Pestsäule war stilprägend und wurde in der ganzen Monarchie nachgeahmt.

Um sie vor indirekten Schäden zu schützen, wurde sie im Zweiten Weltkrieg eingemauert.

Im Zuge der Corona-Krise wurde die Wiener Pestsäule zu einer zentralen Anlaufstelle in der Stadt, wo mit der Bitte um einen glimpflichen Ausgang der Pandemie zahlreiche Kerzen, Kinderzeichnungen und Gebetstexte niedergelegt wurden.

Dragon Harbor 1660-1680

In the mid-17th century, word had reached the King of the Old World that there were "unholy beasts" wandering the shores of Dragon Harbor and Pirates plundering the waters surrounding the land. He sent loyal Capitan of the Royal Navy Phoebus Goodwin to commission and man the Dragon Harbor Guard Barracks. Goodwin brought with him a Majorette Joan, who later became his wife. After recruiting local Rye Miller to their cause, they immediately set out to rid the land of werewolves and pirates.

Their attempts were met with some resistance from the locals; however, who had known the Fischer werewolf clan for some time and generally accepted them. In addition, it frustrated the Goodwins that any time a werewolf was caught, they always seemed to escape several days later.

In 1671, the Douglas Family, in hopes to expand their influence and revenue, opened their own grocery store on Santa Simia Boulevard. While the Beauregards were not too pleased with the decision to sell independently, they were able to quickly shift their focus more towards furniture.

There is no records of Bobo DaSilva and Pierre Monfrer in the 1660s. Historians believe she was shunned from the community for her odd doll-like features and tendency to break men's hearts. It's apparent that sometime during this time, she married Pierre Monfrer and the two of them moved out of the town. They are not mentioned again until 1673 in a letter from Guy Beauregard to a business associate in the Old World:

I finally visited the MonFrer manufactury upon the pleading of Pierre MonFrer. It is a large studio, fronted by a quaint house exactly as their toy houses portray. While I have not ascertained their material supplier, their products are most sturdy and enjoyable for a child. Although, I must admit, Pierre is who makes the deal palatable, an old friend of mine. His wife brings naught but heartbreak and the creeps. I expect a full batch of MonFrer Toy Houses to be shipped out next month. I know you'll find them satisfactory.

The first schoolhouse of Dragon Harbor was built in 1680. The town convinced a young graduate of the Old World University Hilda Melrose to be the school's first headmistress. The headmistress also lived in the schoolhouse.

Tobias Graves, the first local heir of the Graves Family, inherited his father's business in 1680 and immediately commissioned the construction of the Graves Mortuary. Tobias, who married Malikita Beauregard, had convinced his In-Laws to give his wife a plot of land on Beauregard Lane.

Am vergangenen Freitag stellten sich 3 aktive Mitglieder der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Balbersdorf-Habersdorf der praktischen Fahrprüfung - aufgrund des Fahrzeuggewichtes des neuen Logistikfahrzeugs von 7,2 Tonnen wird dafür ein spezieller Feuerwehrführerschein benötigt. Die drei Anwärter Thomas Fischer, Florian Wagner und Tobias Frank haben nach intensiver Vorbereitung im Weihnachtsurlaub alle Prüfungsherausforderungen erfolgreich absolviert und sind nun berechtigt, das neue TSF im Fall der Fälle zur Einsatzstelle zu bewegen. Besonderer Dank gilt hierbei Harald Steininger, der bei allen Fahrten als Ausbilder fungierte.

HESTIA - GODDESS OF THE HEARTH

“Hestia (Hearth) is a member of the older generation of Olympians, offspring of the Titans Kronos and Rhea (Hesiod Theogony 453-500). Indeed, she is said to be both the eldest and the youngest of her siblings (Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite 22-23), eldest because she was the first-born, but also youngest, for Kronos swallowed his children as they were born, and when subsequently he was given an emetic and disgorged them, they reappeared in reverse order, so that Hestia emerged last. Hestia’s residence in her father’s belly is therefore treated as a second period of gestation, and his spewing her up, as a second parturition.

Although the elder Olympian Poseidon and the younger Olympian Apollon each wooed Hestia, she turned them down , swearing an oath that she would remain a virgin forever. In place of marriage, Zeus granted her the privilege of enjoying the fat of sacrificial meats in the center of each house, and she is honoured in all temples and enjoys honour among all mortals as the eldest of the gods (Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite 22-32). So, like the younger Olympians Artemis and Athena, Hestia chooses to remain a maiden, and Zeus allots to her the cosmic honour of being the hearth, the locus of sacrificial rites. Accordingly she is bi-natural, being at once the physical hearth with its fire and also an anthropomorphic goddess who can enjoy the rich juices that issue from a sacrificial victim. Since her name signifies simply ‘hearth,’ a hestia (hearth) derives its name from the given name of the goddess or, like Atlas (Bearer), the goddess was named proleptically.

Important in cult but not mythology, Hestia appears in few myths. Her Roman equivalent is Vesta.

Ten Cities tells the story of club music and club cultures in ten urban centres across Africa and Europe from 1960 to March 2020. It looks beyond the North Atlantic locations that are usually assumed to be the main focus of attention and sets out to put together a more inclusive narrative. Bringing clubs to the fore as nocturnal laboratories for different ways of life, the book portrays the cities’ music subcultures in twenty-one essays, playlists, and photo sequences – before COVID-19 impacted creative communities worldwide. It is a retrospective testimony to their living spirit, a rhythmanalysis mediated by sound and night.
