Combing the three-ish main pieces of media I kinda post about, I present to you the Sadboy Triangle. I posit that all sadboys are some combination of these three main archetypes, with some examples attached.

The Wet Cat has a certain... earnest naiveté. Like they may not be super new to angst, but there's a degree of desperation, holding onto the silver lining, trying to distract themselves until the moment of hardship passes, if it ever does.

The Mangy Stray started to bite back. They're fucking sick of being kicked down, and although they've achieved a degree of solace in their situation, understanding the very real possibility that they might not ever see the end of it, there's also a lot of spiteful resolve within them to persevere regardless.

The Elderly Dog is tired. They may be dedicating themselves to something, and aren't quite giving up, but they've seen it all that they've reach a point where they're sort of just going through the motions. While the Wet Cat may have hope and the Mangy Stray has spite, the Elderly Dog has resignation. They stopped seeing the light in the dark and are just holding out for it to end in any way possible.

Now it's rare for a character to be purely of one type and even more rare for them to remain stagnant all the way through. Kaladin, for instance, is transcending the chart entirely by the end of Rhythm of War. Hunter, meanwhile, has started moving rightward towards Mangy Stray in For the Future and is projected to also transcend the chart by the end of the show. However, in general, these are the vibes that they all emit.

Denji unfortunately is projected to be sent through even more horrors.
