The Owl House has Coven Heads But No Covens
Alador is a part of the abomination coven. He quite literally has to be because otherwise he's part of the Emperor's Coven and that makes issues with Amity going covenless SO MUCH WORSE. So, with that, here's a simple question: If his boss doesn't like his work, why can't he shut it down?
This is the core of the problem. Darius is a coven head. These coven heads are made out to be a big deal. A position you want to aspire to. They also work directly with Belos and presumably make some amount of input on decisions for how the Isles are run. They are Belos' cabinet effectively with what we see.
But on the flipside... What do they do? And potentially more importantly, what do their covens do? Terra is used to test Kikimora, an EC member. Grey uses EC guards during Labyrinth Runners. Yes, you could argue they are still illusion coven members but they look and act like Emperor's Coven members and even use that coven's equipment: The abomatons. Where are HIS illusionists?
Or, you know, the ones who make objects to sell and distribute to those not as high in the coven ranks? Those with little magic and need things like personal protection? Those like Alador. But... Darius appears to EXTREMELY disapprove of Alador's work. Sure, it may be personally motivated but when has that ever stopped a boss from doing a dick move? Let alone once Belos had a reason to get upset with them as well with the abomatons. That should have made there be a limited amount of abomatons because Blight Industries was potentially closed by order of the coven head. That or it could have been taken over by Darius so maybe they keep making abomatons but now Amity's is more connected to the covens than she was before because her family's business has more direct oversight. Now that her and Blight Industries are properly connected to the abomination coven.
Not that it shouldn't have been already. Again, you have the Main Nine, so big that the classes in Hexside bend around them and they have specialized uniforms for kids to show they're studying for a specific coven, even in other schools. Shouldn't that mean this is a real organization and so an entity as big as Blight Industries is made out to be should already have been brought under their wing? They're using literally the magic that the coven exists to... Well, technically for no reason but murder but the excuse should be that it helps push the magic further while also regulating it to make sure it doesn't break the law.
But do you know who shows up because of the abomatons? Hunter. And the Emperor's Coven. NOT the abomination coven.
This is kind of one of those big things that highlights how underdeveloped the worldbuilding of TOH is. Everyone has to be a part of a coven but we NEVER get an idea for what that even means beyond a tattoo that limits your magic. These covens are a part of the governing body but what do they DO? And you can't blame the shortening AT ALL for this because the show introduced the covens during literally the FIFTH episode. So we had an entire season where we could have had even one episode actually showcase a coven and what they're about, or even montage through a lot of them to show how the Isles worked... And we got literally zero. Instead, we got episodes like The First Day that make even the little we know about covens and wild witches seem inconsistent.
It's not even that this would be too boring. Luz gets excited for the Covention literally BECAUSE getting to showcase so much magic is a really cool idea. But even that episode makes it boring. We get like two covens getting to show off their stuff, and not really all that impressively, a description for a couple covens' types of magic, not what they do in the society, and that's... It. We don't even get the full nine despite them having decided to do a boring ass job fair for this. Instead, the covens themselves feel like a footnote in their own episode despite being the ONE kind of unique thing about TOH's world. Not really since it comes across as just schools of magic but it's SOMETHING beyond the most generic fantasy out there.
But it didn't care. The covens are just there for paradoxically heavy handed but also inconsistent messaging and theming. So we get coven heads because they're cool and they're able to be enemies... But no covens. Because actually showing those might have meant having to have a real world.

Some more stuff I drew a while ago. My take on the combos of different TOH covens with the abomination coven. I'm thinking of maybe doing more combos when I have time. Also maybe redoing the abomination x healing. Anyways. Art tips are more than welcome.

Hello, hi
So, Hunter finally starting to heal, but has another breakdown and tries to shut everyone but us out<3
PAINNNNNN PAINN
ok fluff time 🤪
Only for you. (hunter toh x reader)
Tumblr media
"what do you mean he's ignoring you?" Sitting on the couch, you had asked the brown-haired girl the same question twice
"y/n- like I said we can't get a hold of him. it's like he's shut himself out" Luz stood up, brushing her hands on her pants and turning to you "maybe you can try? because he's your boyfriend" she teased, dragging out the e
"well do you at least know where he is?" You asked the latina, furrowing your brow. as far as you knew, hunter was just living his life like a normal teenage boy. maybe he's just lost communication? or he's hiding away like that one time he...
oh.
"y/n? what's up with your face? do you know where he is?" yes. you know exactly where he is.
quickly standing up, you grab your jacket and rush to put on your shoes, "sorry Luz! tell Eda I'm going out! I'll be back soon!"
you run through the woods, breathing heavily as your lungs burn with anticipation. hopefully he's ok right? hunter wouldn't avoid you of all people...right?
"hunter?" you arrive at the small clearing of grass and flowers, seeing a small figure curled up against a tree in the distance. "oh, hun"
"y-y/n? is that you?" the pale boy asked, looking up into your worried eyes. you stepped closer to the boy, cautious, but watching for any sort of discomfort. it was only then you noticed the rosy cheeks and streaks of tears rolling down his pretty face
"oh, titan, are you alright?" you kneeled down to his height and sat in front of him, putting your hands on his face
"i just needed to see you, y/n" he closed his crimson eyes and leaned into your hands as more tears rolled down his cheeks. he sniffles, using a free hand to wipe his tears "i just don't want you to see me like this." he choked back a sob- this poor boy
"hunter, hey, look at me" as you were moving your hands from his face, he looked into your eyes with his own red, puffy ones. "you're ok. its going to be ok. I'm here for you, hunter" you wrap your arms around his body, feeling him relax against you. "I'll always be here, hun"
he slowly moves his arms and wraps them under your torso, putting his face in the crook of your neck. "thank you, y/n. I love you so much." hunter softly cried into your shoulder, holding you tightly
"of course. always for you. only you ♥︎"

So Coven Heads (Master witches), can wear and become one with their powers. Like perfect harmony.
Tumblr media
Eda and Lilith wear their magic to give them enhanced speed and power. The coven heads infuse themselves in their respective coven magic becoming exactly what their covens are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s probably why we don’t see them use staffs. They’re not necessary to draw that power out when you yourself can become that power.
Tumblr media
In Eda and Lilith’s case they use them as power amplifiers instead of a summoner. That’s their attribute. They’re palismen masters. Which makes sense given their father.
So is the “milestone” a witch has to reach in order to claim themselves as “Master witches” is for them to reach a magical harmony/fusion? The “top of the mountain” so to speak.
Becoming one with magic in mind, body and spirit?
I guess it makes sense from a Scientific point of view.
Tumblr media
Witches magic comes from a bile sac located and connected to the heart.
The heart is connected to everything else in your body via vanes and the blood coursing through them.
All a witch would have to do is leak that magic into their blood stream and they would become one with it.
That’s very interesting.
Tumblr media
So it’s safe to assume all of the other Coven Heads can do this too. Or at the very least have the potential to.
Makes me wonder… can Amity do this too…?

Still not over how the owl house set it up like there was going to be a magic system based around covens that harked back to shit like the Hogwarts houses, and even though Eda didn’t subscribe to covens and Luz by contrast picked all of them we should expect everyone else to slot into a specific role
Only to then, call the spade a spade, and go “you know, defining your entire identity and livelihood around a made up system created by some man who claims to talk to god is kinda culty, right? And the fact it’s burned into you forever? Hm, yeah that’s weird why would you choose such a restrictive approach to the inherent freedom of magic? That’s weird and strange, magic should be without limits otherwise what makes it magical?”
It’s so cunt actually they ate that shit up I hope the bitches who still take pottermore quizzes were gagged

One of my pet peeves is Luz's hexide uniform, because there's 2 extra colors in the uniform that don't have any coven association, while there's 3 coven colors missing. So I tried remaking Luz's uniform to fit in as many colors as possible.
It doesn't look as nice or color coded (which is why I changed abomination's location) but I tried 😭

I know you've criticized TOH's magic system as a whole before, but what are your thoughts on the actual types of coven magic themselves? (abomination, bard, beast keeping, construction, healing, illusion, oracle, plant, potions)
I mean, I like magic enough to like just about any school of magic. If I had any real issue with them it's that Bard is amongst them. I know that may seem weird but the rest are actually very specific, to a degree of being kind of... material. Illusion is the closest to being different but you still have a specific idea of what sort of spell is being cast, even if it falls into a more broad category than specifically plant instead of Earth (I'll get back to this point). Bard on the other hand? As far as we can tell in TOH, the biggest thing about it seems to be that it designates that you actually use a spellcasting focus instead of a spell circle but otherwise you can do as you please. Otherwise, why is it that they can literally summon storm clouds and lightning? Why is bard magic also akin to weather magic?
And that's kind of the issue I have with trying to actually talk about each. Do I like plant magic? Sure. Do I like construction magic? Sure. Why are these two different covens though when what seems to be the material different between the two is that one's power is flexible while the other makes concrete pillars? Maybe if we saw them actually use their magic for more than offense that'd be one thing but as it is, you have to wonder why they aren't one coven. Or hell, where do medicinal plants fall into this system? Do they not have potions of healing or potions of growth because they cross into another coven's territory?
And all of this excludes an evocation coven. In D&D, that's the school of magic that does fireballs but there IS NO FIREBALL COVEN!?
Sigh.
So yeah, it's kind of hard for me to judge them individually because most of them are just very basic. And that's just conceptually. If we go by what the show shows us: Potions: Boring and barely used.
Plant: SURE HOPE YOU LIKE VINES! And then one toxin despite the fact that you'd assume that was a potion coven thing.
Abomination: Definitely the coolest by asking what happens when you focus on golem making but also just does whatever the writer wants it to. Otherwise, why the fuck does it have a teleportation spell? Let alone one that doesn't require a golem. Also they never actually do anything with the golems they make except turn them into robots and that's not interesting.
Bard: Listed my issues above, especially since clearly much of its magic just does whatever, regardless of if you can hear it or not.
Healing: Pretty much not in the show.
Illusion: Fucked over by the show lying about it not being able to affect real objects and the show never actually does anything interesting with it and when it has fun with it, it's only once for the actual potential of the coven.
Beast Keeping: We see it only a couple times and it looks cool but is ill defined and doesn't seem to actually be familiar based. In fact, with how easy it seems to be for witches to call upon creatures and there being a super mode for it, it comes off as just an objectively better form of what abomination magic's main gimmick is.
Construction: Has the amazing fact of having power GLYPHS when glyphs are supposed to be Luz's thing and also they never come back. Otherwise, it's literally just stone pillars. Boring.
Oracle: We never actually see anyone tell the future or have future sight be a plot point of the show so entirely pointless. Otherwise, ghosts and telepathy, the latter of which seems to have been through an artifact and not through an oracle power, so again: Boring. Hell, the only thing we ever see one of their spirits do is attack like any old golem or beast so that's THREE covens where they effectively all do the same thing. Also the second coven who's primary color is purple.
And if you're going "Well, what about using them outside of the show?" I don't think that's a good question. It's MAGIC. It can do quite literally whatever the fuck you want. It is only limited by the rules of your setting and your imagination. As there effectively zero rules on what any of these covens can actually do, no power limits, it was only ever the limits of the creators.
And that only made it ever look like the creators lacked any creativity. Or, bare minimum, lacked interest in their magic to make it creative and distinct in anyway.

Alright I said I’d post the story so here it is. This scene actually takes place when Hunter is a little older, around when he’s just learned how to walk and make mostly coherent sentences. So one day Darius is in his room getting ready for an Abomination coven banquet (it’s sorta like a corporate event where all the biggest names of the abomination coven come together as a way of “showing camaraderie within the coven” when really it’s just a way for witches to advertise their product or kiss up to the higher positions) Hunter sitting on Darius bed watching and asking questions as little kids do. After Darius explains the banquet is like a party with food and company Hunter obviously wants to go. Darius refuses saying it’s way past his bed time and other excuses, but Hunter doesn’t give up so easily. After Darius tucks him into bed he sneaks out and teleports with Darius via abomination. Once there Hunter wanders off exploring to large hall filled with people all dressed in different shades of purple and large abominations passing drinks and little sandwiches (side note about Hunter, when he was little he was terrified of abominations, I imagine them being the Boiling Isles equivalent of scary birthday clowns). So Hunter gets scared of one of the abominations and runs away and into the leg of Alador Blight, Alador recognizes him from the occasional pictures on Darius’s penstagram account. Alador takes Hunter to Darius who is beyond confused as to why he’s here. Darius can’t watch Hunter for the night (being head of the coven he has to host the event) so Alador offers to look after him. Darius is more than reluctant to ask him for help but knows he is more likely than not the only one there with actually experience with children. Hunter doesn’t immediately trust Alador since he isn’t fully comfortable with strangers but soon warms up to him. Alador spends the whole night talking and playing little games with Hunter (he taught him how to play patty cake) and when Hunter starts to feel sleepy Alador slips him into his coat like a little baby carrier (it’s something he does with his kids a lot). The night ends and Darius is walking around the half empty hall now looking for them when he sees Alador asleep on one of the chairs, his head back, snoring a bit and Hunter curled up on his chest warm and cozy snuggled in his coat.

I’m sure others have spotted this detail, but I just noticed it and thought it was such a cool callback that I had to point it out.
The first person we ever see get a coven sigil is also the first person to get their sigil removed in the epilogue.
