FEATURE: Meet the Stars of Princess Connect Re:Dive
Tumblr media
Going into Princess Connect! Re:Dive, I knew little about it other than the fact that it was an adaptation of a mobile game. That didn’t bode well; my experiences with video game adaptations have been less than positive.
Imagine my surprise, then, when it turned out to be hilarious. When a pair of ridiculous-looking wolves started dragging off our protagonist, I completely lost it. I found myself constantly laughing at the KONOSUBA-esque humor — it was only much later that I’d learn that Princess Connect and KONOSUBA shared the same director. It was also well-animated and delivered some impressive-looking action scenes and spell effects.
At the end of the day, however, this is a comedy anime through and through. And comedy anime live and die on the basis of their voice acting. Unsurprising, then, that Princess Connect features an all-star voice cast, with the actors from the mobile game reprising their roles in the anime. Let’s take a look at some of the talented voice actors that bring the characters of Princess Connect, both the game and the anime, to life.
Pecorine (M·A·O)
Tumblr media
Mao Ichimichi, also known as M·A·O, is probably better known for her non-anime roles — she started off her career in tokusatsu (live-action often with heavy special effects), most notably playing Luka Millfy in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. She later ventured into anime voice acting. She voices the cheerful and energetic (and perpetually hungry) Pecorine in Princess Connect. She has also voiced Iris in Fire Force, Luluco in Space Patrol Luluco, Hondomachi in ID:Invaded, Vorona in Durarara, Bela in Bem, and Remi Ayasaki in the currently-airing Horimiya.
Kokkoro (Miku Ito)
Tumblr media
This isn’t the first time Miku Ito has played a character named Kokoro, having played the character of the same name in the BanG Dream! franchise. Her most well-known role is probably that of her own namesake: Miku from The Quintessential Quintuplets. Her other roles include Shimamura from Adachi and Shimamura, Ann Akagi from Action Heroine Cheer Fruits (in which she starred alongside fellow Princess Connect actor M·A·O), and Nana Mifune in Gleipnir.
Karyl (Rika Tachibana)
Tumblr media
Rika Tachibana has an extensive voice acting career in video games, featuring in such titles as Granblue Fantasy, Magia Record, The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls, Street Fighter V, and of course Princess Connect, where she plays Karyl. Tachibana’s anime voice acting roles include Sae Kobayakawa from The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls, Reiko from Shomin Sample, Naruse from The Island of Giant Insects — in which she starred alongside ... you guessed it ... M·A·O — and African Wild Dog from Kemono Friends.
Yuuki (Atsushi Abe)
Tumblr media
Our main protagonist Yuuki may not say much, but Atsushi Abe manages to make whatever little he says absolutely hilarious. Abe garnered widespread recognition for his role as Touma Kamijou in A Certain Magical Index and its spinoffs. His other roles include Moritaka Mashiro in Bakuman, Koichi Sakakibara in Another, Takashi in B Gata H Kei, Akiyuki in Xam’d: Lost Memories, Soya in Planet With, Inojin Yamanaka in Boruto, and Sougo in IDOLISH7.
Kaiser Insight (Shouta Aoi)
Tumblr media
It is not uncommon for female voice actors to voice male roles, especially younger characters. But male voice actors voicing female roles? Extremely rare. Shouta Aoi’s unique, “angelic” voice allows him to do so, with him voicing main Princess Connect villain Kaiser Insight. Aoi is better known as a singer, but he made his voice acting breakthrough as Ai Mikaze in Uta no Prince-sama. Since then, he has voiced Hideaki Tojo in Ace of the Diamond, Licht in The Royal Tutor, and will voice Subaru in the upcoming adaptation of Tokyo Babylon.
  Maho (Maaya Uchida)
Maho is considered by the other Princess Connect characters to be slightly delusional, so of course she is voiced by Maaya Uchida, best-known as the voice of out-of-touch characters like Rikka from Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions and Ranko Kanzaki from The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls. Her non-delusional roles include Yoshioka from Blue Spring Ride, Norman from The Promised Neverland, Yuki Yoshino from Food Wars, and Catarina Claes from My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom.
  Miyako (Sora Amamiya)
Tumblr media
I mentioned earlier how Princess Connect feels incredibly KONOSUBA-esque, both in its setting and its sense of humor. Makes perfect sense, then, for it to feature the voice of Sora Amamiya, known for voicing “useless” goddess Aqua from KONOSUBA. Amamiya’s other notable roles include Elizabeth from The Seven Deadly Sins, Touka from Tokyo Ghoul, Akame from Akame ga Kill, Kaori from One Week Friends, Isla from Plastic Memories, and Asseylum from Aldnoah.Zero.
  Hiyori (Nao Toyama)
Nao Toyama played her first major role as Kanon Nakagawa in The World God Only Knows, which kickstarted her music career. Many people also know her as Yui Yuigahama in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, or Chitoge Kirisaki in Nisekoi. However, the role for which I personally recognise her the most is as the quiet Rin Shima in Laid-Back Camp. Other major roles include Karen in KINMOZA!, Ruka in Rent-a-Girlfriend, and Nozomi in Sound! Euphonium.
  Suzume (Aoi Yuki)
Tumblr media
Aoi Yuki has been earning plaudits this season for her energetic portrayal of the titular spider in So I’m a Spider, So What? Yuki has had many significant voice roles over the years, including Madoka from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Tanya in Saga of Tanya the Evil, Froppy in My Hero Academia, Tamaki in Fire Force, Diane in The Seven Deadly Sins, and Mami in Rent-a-Girlfriend.
Rei (Saori Hayami)
Saori Hayami is one of the most in-demand voice actors of recent times. She is known for portraying Yukino Yukinoshita in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, and received considerable praise for her performance as Shoko Nishimiya in A Silent Voice. Her other notable roles include Shirayuki in Snow White with the Red Hair, Shinobu in Demon Slayer, Tsuruko in AnoHana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Yumeko Jabami in Kakegurui, and Himawari in Boruto.
  Jun (Ayako Kawasumi)
Tumblr media
Jun is a classic knight in metal armor. And who better to voice a knight than Ayako Kawasumi, best known as the voice of Saber in various installments of the Fate franchise. Kawasumi is also a talented pianist, which explains her role as Nodame in Nodame Cantabile. Some of her other major roles include Fuu in Samurai Champloo, Erina Pendleton in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Alice in Pandora Hearts, Melfina in Outlaw Star, Natsuki in Initial D, and Lafiel in Crest of the Stars.
Io (Shizuka Ito)
Shizuka Ito won a “Best Actress in Supporting Roles” award at the 10th Seiyuu Awards for her performances as Meiko Shiraki in Prison School and Sailor Venus in Sailor Moon Crystal. Some of her other major performances are as Himawari in xxxHolic, Ran in Texhnolyze, Kaori Kanzaki in A Certain Magical Index, Boota and Darry in Gurren Lagann, Yayoi in Psycho-Pass, Rei Hasekura in Maria Watches Over Us, and Hinagiku in Hayate the Combat Butler.
Yui (Risa Taneda)
Risa Taneda is undoubtedly best known for her roles as Erina Nakiri in Food Wars and Kaori Miyazono in Your Lie in April. But to me, she will always be Saki from Shin Sekai Yori, where she delivered an excellent performance spanning many ages, and performed the first ending song too. Taneda’s other significant roles include Rize in Is the Order a Rabbit?, Mirai in Beyond the Boundary, Yukina in Strike the Blood, Ai Mizuno in Zombie Land Saga, Xenovia in High School DxD, and Yukari in YUYUSHIKI.
Labyrista (Miyuki Sawashiro)
Tumblr media
Miyuki Sawashiro is one of the most prolific voice actors of all time. She first came to prominence as the voice of Puchiko in Di Gi Charat; she famously reprised the role in the English dub of Leave it to Piyoko, becoming the first anime voice actor to voice the same character in both sub and dub. A few of Sawashiro’s other major roles include Kurapika in Hunter x Hunter, Celty Sturluson in Durarara, Bishamon in Noragami, Fujiko Mine in recent installments of Lupin the Third, and Kanbaru in the Monogatari series.
Aoi (Kana Hanazawa)
Tumblr media
Kana Hanazawa needs no introduction, being one of the most popular voice actors of our times. She rose to popularity as Nadeko in Bakemonogatari and its sequels, performing the iconic opening song “Renai Circulation.” Some of her other anime roles include Akane from Psycho-Pass, Mayuri from Steins;Gate, Angel from Angel Beats, Kosaki Onodera from Nisekoi, Hinata Kawamoto from March Comes in Like a Lion, Kuroneko from Oreimo, and Ichika from The Quintessential Quintuplets.

Tagged once more~
Lots of love to @mikotofubar for tagging me~
Rules: Pick 5 shows then answer the questions given. Dont cheat! Then tag some people.
1. Fruits Basket.
2. Soul Eater.
3. Noragami.
4. Tokyo Ghoul.
5. Durarara
Who is your favorite character in 2? Crona! They’re adorable, tragic, and hella interesting!
Who is your least favorite character in 1? Umm...I dont hate anybody much in this. I guess Ayame? I just dont completely resonate with his character like I do with most of the others.
What is your favorite episode of 4? Ahh...Since this isnt about the Manga I’d say...Episode 6 of Re:. Because while it was rushed a bit, I got to have Juuzou with Big Madam, Haise vs Seidou, and the Mutsurie hug scene.
What is your favorite season of 5? Ketsu!! Otherwise known as the last one haha. I adored it a whole bunch. I thought everything was put together and intertwined nicely.
Who is your favorite couple in 3? Oh man this is really tough. All the main ones are so good. I’d say Yatori wins over though~Its so sweet but also has just enough angst in it to keep me on my toes. KazuBisha is a very close second though!
Who is your favorite couple in 2? A toss up between CroMa and SouMa-It just goes back and forth so often its hard for me to say. They are both so cute and have their own strong points-When I first watched\read it I prefered SouMa but the older I got and when I rewatched\reread it I couldnt help but like CroMa more and more.
What is your favorite episode of 1? This might change when the new season comes out-But as of Season 1 I’d say the ever Iconic Kyoru hug episode. Whats not to love about it? Equal parts sad as it is heartwarming. (I really, really love Hanas backstory episode as well-So this was hard to say.)
What is your favorite episode of 5? The epsiode when Masaomi fought against his gang and overcomes his cowardice-Then it ends with Mikado and Anri coming to help him with Celty. I just really loved that episode a lot.
What is your favorite season of 2? Uhh...I guess the first? Netflix just updated it and made them all one big season so I dont know anymore. But the one where Medusa goes to get Asura out of the bag-Crona and Maka fight-And Blackstar and Kid have Erika and Free to deal with. That ones my favorite and the one I was the most riveted by.
How long have you watched 1? Oh jeez. I was like...9 when I first saw the original Fruits Basket-So its been about nine years since I watched it last.
How did you become interested in 3? Well I was just bored one day and clicked on the first anime I saw with a interesting sounding plot-Then the show really captivated me.
Who is your favorite actor in 4? I’ll do voice actors since this isnt a live action-And In the Japanese sub I’d say its Rie Kugimiya the voice of Juuzou! She does an excellent job. And in the english dub I’d say its the voice of Kaneki-Austin Tindle! His voice acting is on point in certain parts.
Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? Oh this is rough. Ohh man. Uh-Well I think I prefer Fruits Basket just by a little. Soul eater is great-But the anime got off the road the Manga paved-And Noragami is really amazing even in anime form to me...However filler and parts they took off of it to make it more comedic make it lose points quickly. And Durarara is so, so good. Oh goodness do I love it. However there where parts I was just like-I really....Dont care about this character they are focusing so much time on. Fruits Basket is wonderful. The plot is about healing and love-And I just love it. Im eagerly awaiting the season 2.
Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?  Noragami has more episodes as of right now-So I’d say Norgami lol.
If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? Can I choose nobody because holly shit everybody is fucked up one way or another in this show Uh I’d say Saiko? Maybe? She seems like the one who has the least messed up backstory and present during the Tokyo Ghoul series to me.
Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? Hmm...Maybe? I could see it work a bit depending on what ends up going on. It would certainly be interesting! I’d definitely read\watch it.
Overall, which show has the better story line, 3 or 5? Well. Both are highly interesting-But if were only doing Anime I’d say Durarara. Maybe even If I were to take into consideration they’re Manga (Or novel for Durarara) counterparts I’d still choose Durarara. Because I love how every character is connected to another, who is connected to another and nearly all of it is relevant to the plot in some way.
Which has better theme music, 2 or 4? Tokyo Ghoul definitely. Unravel and Katharsis are some of my all time favorites-However Resonance and Black paper moon are also really good.
@juzuya-13, @haveanicedaymyself, @kyanitedragon, @icameoutofthecupboards, @aya-mesto-01, @ilovejuuzou, @juuheizou, @ashistr-ash and anybody else who wants to do this!

Happy Birthday Mamoru Miyano (June 8)
Part One: Roles Part Two: Song Recommendations Part Three: Subbed Videos
youtube
This video was made in 2015. Since then, Mamo has gathered many more strong roles. I’m going to be putting gifs/pictures for all those roles plus some new additions below!
I will bold the ones that aren’t in the video. I was underline ones that are my favourite! I will put personal notes in italics. Be aware that I haven’t watched all these anime so they might not be underlined for that reason. I will only be counting anime roles (no dubbing, live-action dramas, or stage acting). This time, it will have the anime name then the character’s name.
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu - Gakushuu Asano
Tumblr media
Ajin - Kei Nagai
Tumblr media
Bungou Stray Dogs - Osamu Dazai
This is my favourite role from Mamo. There is no competition for me. Dazai is his strongest performance to date. From the comedic moments to the solemn tragedies within the series, he pulls them all off perfectly.
Tumblr media
Chihayafuru - Taichi Mashima
Tumblr media
Death Note - Light Yagami
I haven’t watched Death Note, but the Kira laugh will forever be in my memory.
Tumblr media
Dog Days - Cinque Izumi
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Nobunaga Concerto - Saburou
He’s the guy wearing white.
Tumblr media
One Punch Man - Amai Mask
Tumblr media
Ouran Koukou Host Club - Tamaki Suoh
Over and over again, Mamo made me laugh while playing this disaster of a guy. Maaya Sakamoto sounded adorable and great as Haruhi too, and Tamaki’s over-the-top expressiveness was a lot of fun too.
Tumblr media
Overlord - Pandora's Actor
Tumblr media
Persona 5 - Ryuuji Sakamoto
Tumblr media
Pokémon Best Wishes! - Dent (Cilan)
Tumblr media
Sarazanmai - Reo Niiboshi
Tumblr media
Skip Beat! - Shoutarou Fuwa
Tumblr media
Soul Eater - Death the Kid
Weirdly enough, I prefer Todd Haberkorn’s Death the Kid to Mamo’s.
Tumblr media
Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto - Takuto Tsunashi
Tumblr media
Steins;Gate - Rintarou Okabe
I didn’t watch Steins;Gate in its entirety, but it has made me laugh and cringe so much at the same time. I had a hard time recognizing him in this role.
Tumblr media
Tokyo Ghoul - Shuu Tsukiyama
Tumblr media
Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 1000% - Tokiya Ichinose
Tumblr media
Vampire Knight - Zero Kiryu
Tumblr media
Wolf's Rain - Kiba
If my memory serves right, this was his first real breakout anime role. He had dubbed live-action and voiced in Kingdom Hearts previously, but this was his first main character!
Tumblr media
Yuri!!! on Ice - Jean-Jacques Leroy
Tumblr media
Zombieland Saga - Kotaro Tatsumi
If I got a nickel for every time I laughed because of this character, I would get a nickel for every time he appeared. He’s a living meme.

Anime that should get a another season or remake
Anime that I think should get another season or remake. This is based on anime that I have watched so not every anime will be on this list.
1. Haikyuu season 4
Tumblr media
Y’all already know!!!!!! I’m sure if you asked any Haikyuu fan what they wanted the most they would 99% of the time say they want a season 4. And I’m on the same boat! I don’t know what is taking Production I.G. so long to make a season 4, it’s been 3 years!!! I’m not sure if Production I.G. is waiting for the manga to have a lot more of source material or something but whatever the case I would like some news of them preparing or something T^T .
2. Yona of the Dawn season 2
Tumblr media
I can’t be the only one who feels this way. This anime is so great and enjoyable! Although more slower pace, it was enjoyable with many lovable character and some great action here and there. The story has so much more to it that us fans need to see. I know Yona of the Dawn manga is still going on but considering the pacing of the series it would be fine to make another season or two, plus with the recent OVAs that came out in 2017, another anime season could hopefully occur soon. Please studio Pierrot please!!
3. Ouran high school host club season 2
Tumblr media
I think we all saw this coming, I’m sure everyone who has seen this anime wants another season. In my opinion Ouran is a great comedy and romance anime. I normally don’t like romance, but Ouran made me feel better about the genre when I watched it. It was also the first anime I watched dub only/dub first (if you don’t include like Pokémon and Digimon). Honestly Ouran is a great anime and I would just love to see a season two mostly because 👏 there 👏 was 👏 no 👏 kiss 👏 scene 👏 with 👏 Tamaki 👏 and 👏 Haruhi 👏! If there was a season 2 I really hope we get a kiss scene tbh.
4. Soul eater season 2
Tumblr media
The original Soul Eater is great, good story, great characters, good development, good animation, etc; but some people just didn’t like the ending because it was anime only and some say poorly done. Many fans, including me, want more of Soul Eater and getting a season 2 would just be amazing to see. Although it has been about 10 years since the original release of the anime so a second season is very unlikely.
Although if we ever get a season 2 to Soul Eater, I hope Studio Bones takes the same approach as A-1 Pictures did with Blue Exorcist. The second season of Blue Exorcist ignores the anime only ending of season 1 and continues its original story like nothing happened.
5. Magi season 3
Tumblr media
WHERE IS SEASON 3 A-1 PICTURES?! SKSJSJS I love this series way too much and I just want a season 3. It’s such a great series, there’s such great and interesting characters, and an interesting setting and plot. Although the series has a slow start, it gets so so good! The manga is finished so I don’t see why A-1 Pictures hasn’t made another season, I hear that the anime did well with manga sales and blue ray sales so what’s the deal. T^T
6. Pandora Hearts season 2
Tumblr media
👏 THIS 👏 ANIME 👏 IS 👏 GREAT 👏 I hear so many great things about the manga and I just would love to see how it would play out animated. I loved this series so much, it has a great mix of some comedy and action and fantasy. It’s so good!!! There’s such interesting characters and interesting plot. It’s a slow series but is so good, I swear. I really want this series to get a season 2. It’s so underrated unfortunately. I HIGHLY recommend the manga for this series.
7. No Game No Life season 2
Tumblr media
I don’t really remember too much, cause you know, it’s been 4 years, but honestly I wish this series would get a season 2. I’m not sure why this series hasn’t gotten one yet, it did pretty well from what I know. It may be because of controversy with the mangaka but that doesn’t seem to be the case because we did get a movie... what’s the deal Madhouse?!?! Give us a Season 2 please!!!!!
8. Akame ga Kill remake
Tumblr media
I freaking loved this anime so much when I first watched it back in 2015, but from a manga reader friend of mine, I found out how different the manga and anime is. I would love to see another anime adaptation where it follows the original fate of the story and see some characters live longer (or shorter idk) than they originally did in the original 2015 anime.
9. Tokyo Ghoul remake
Tumblr media
I like this anime????? but I also have a hate for it.... I liked the first season but hated the second (and somewhat the third). I liked this series but sometimes it’s not that great *cough* *cough* season 2. Season 3 is definitely a step up but it’s rushed. I think if we got a remake, Tokyo Ghoul will actually be a great anime.
10. Black Clover remake
Tumblr media
People either LOVE this show or HATE it. If you’ve seen it, you would understand that there’s so many flaws on the production side of this anime. I mean, 90% of the first few episodes are filler; it takes 4 episodes to get to the beginning of chapter 2! The animation can be so-so at times, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. I do enjoy this series and would like to see how it plays out later but I can not deny how bad of an adaptation this is. Even though I am saying bad things about this anime, I really do enjoy it
11. Hitman reborn remake
(cant fit any more photos rip)
I don’t remember too much from this series other than a lot of filler, mafia, my baby best boy lambo and main boy going naked. Lol, jk, this is actually a nice anime from what I can vaguely remember. I honestly would love to see a remake of this series tbh I think it would do very well
———————————————————-
So that’s all the anime I think should get another season or a remake. There’s probably way way way more anime that totally deserve another season but these are the ones I could really think of. Also please don’t be too upset about the listed remakes, it’s just my opinion of those series. I really do like all these anime in one way or another and highly recommend them to anyone to watch!
———————————————————-
What anime do you think deserves another season?
What anime deserves a remake?
Did you agree with my list?
Do you disagree?

If you could learn any language (except Korean, because I feel like you'd say that) what would it be? For me it would be Japanese. I wanna be able to watch anime without words. Because I don't really like English versions. It doesn't feel... Authentic?? That make sense? Like they live in Japan they should speak the language. God this is a trainwreck
Well of course I’d wanna learn korean, I wanna be able to sing along to all my favorite kpop songs. But also Japanese for sure, not only for being able to understand anime but just because it’s a different language and from a place I really admire and love. I love the Japanese culture, I wanna visit Tokyo one day and I wanna be able to visit without fear of not being able to understand or read anything. I watch mainly dubs for most of my shows, mostly cause the tones of the male characters voices match better to me? Like - I cannot do any DBZ subbed cause Goku just kills me. But I will watch subbed if I have to. I also prefer dub when it comes to high action shows like Tokyo Ghoul and AOT, I want to pay attention to what’s happening in the screen and not miss out cause I’m trying to read. So another reason why I like dub and why I wanna learn the language as well so I can watch either way really :3

Yaws Personal Reflection on Touka Kirishima
I'd like to start of with this quote by Touka in the novels.
“What the hell do you know? It's all because I can't eat, because I could become a target at any time, all because I'm a ghoul! No matter how much I try, there's a wall I can never jump over, and there's happiness I can never have. But I'm still hanging on to life. Despite it all”
Followed by this from part 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course this from Yomo.
Tumblr media
As you can see there’s a pattern, and if I wanted to I could indulge you with a fuckton more Touka quotes/panels to further exemplify these, but I digress because I ramble too much and words alone aren’t enough to truly encapsulate everything in its entirety😒.
Alrighty then, let’s get this long rambling journey started! I dub thee:
“Strength in weakness and Weakness in strength”
Tumblr media
What makes Touka such an interesting character for me in terms of her writing is that there’s a lot of nuances to her that make her so fascinating to read. Because of these elements, I feel as though leads to a general misconception/misunderstanding of her character in favor of either completely overlooking or simply dismissing them and marking them as purely simplistic and well… not important/uninteresting. I for one believe that there lies a profound complex simplicity and simple complexity of sorts to a lot of these nuances that can be very easy to miss, but are of crucial note to consider, most especially the subtleties to her growth in :re alongside many important thematic elements of the story, other characters and herself.
Tumblr media
Adjacent with this is her own personality, decisiveness , selflessness and immense sheer mental fortitude in the face of adversity; living while losing things, moving forward with the little they have, in the hopes of gaining as little or as much as they can towards a peaceful world where such a thing is virtually taboo for ghouls and humans trapped in the bird cage.
Tumblr media
Additionally is her journey being the opposite to Kaneki, wherein he became more ghoul like than human in pursuit of strength (since human is normally denoted as weak). Meanwhile Touka underwent an opposite journey in which she became more human like than ghoul, and there’s a fine dichotomy/conflict for balance between the two that we see with the tribulations faced in the story. In other words strength in weakness (Ghoul- human) and weakness in strength (Human-ghoul) and the various connotations.
Tumblr media
Moreover is the conflict she herself feels as a ghoul in viewing herself as a monster, thus wanting to be more human,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
even when others view her in a different light in conjunction with the earlier harsh actions she would make for the sake of her survival and of others.
We even see how she saves Kaneki numerous times when she didn't really have any obligation to do so in the beginning after considering his own plight in the world as a half ghoul with no place to belong to via Yoshimuras explanation. It’s due to her caring nature that on the surface comes off as very “hard” due to the exterior she puts up as a result of the life she’s lived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Special mention to when he almost ate Hide after fighting Nishki in his starving state and her stepping in,
Tumblr media
thus saving the both of them, something that made Hide very grateful towards her for. (And Hide being hype wing man since chapter 1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And although her threatening to kill Hide and Kimi in relation to their human relations with Kaneki and Nishki comes across as very cruel, its also due to the volatile position that they have in human society as ghouls for security and safety.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For all intents of purposes, their safety takes preference, and we see how this does change in her being able to trust them with their secret, because it’s a risky one that could lead to them losing everything.
Tumblr media
Which as we know, that level of trust didn't exactly work out too well for her and Ayato as little kids that forced them to fend for themselves in the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are several instances where she does come across as real vicious and as Kaneki says “scary”, but also very caring in her own way during many stages of part 1 when he needed someone the most in the world, which is something he remains eternally grateful to her for in his life. She provided that foundation for him in the ghoul world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Uta mentions, she's continuously walking a very tight rope between both worlds and there's a constant struggle faced with everything that she deals with in which she simply cannot afford even the tiniest of slips.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What Touka has wanted from the beginning is a chance at a normal peaceful life, away from the violent lifestyle she was forced into as a ghoul, and all the battles and killings she has had to partake in.
Tumblr media
Her envy for the life that humans live, her hatred for herself in being a ghoul yet longing for peace and understanding between both species are ones that continuously drive her character forward. ([x]- @encase great explanation of this!)
It’s always been the characters of a set case between her and Kaneki as stated earlier. Kaneki a former human was forced into the ghoul world yet was already living a violent and miserable human lifestyle. While Touka lived a harsh ghoul life which initially had somewhat of a human like upbringing with Arata and Ayato, before that life was lost. There's also her curiosity in wanting to learn more and be a part of the human world. (@wishes-upon-dreams has lots of good novel shots!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are two symbolic thematic attributes of Tokyo Ghoul between these two alone, and all the complications that come with it.
Another worthy line from her in the novels is wherein she and Kaneki make human food for Touka to give to her friend Yoriko after a misunderstanding they had.
Tumblr media
Touka remarks on Kaneki attempting to taste the food whilst being aware that he's no longer a full human anymore. Kaneki admits that in the moment that fact was lost on him due to how the food looked and of course him wistfully remembering being able to eat and taste all these types of foods. She comments on which scenario is worse between the two: one who's lost an ability, or one who never had the ability to begin with.
“Who has it worse- someone who was never equipped with a function, or someone who had it and lost it?”
AKA Kaneki losing his ability to eat human food, and Touka never having the ability to eat human food.
Well at least her pregnancy later on gave that nice little cake development parallel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... a lot tend to dismiss her as too weak or bland of a character, or how her relationship with Kaneki stripped away her own “independent” character. In other words, her role of importance got reduced. Which… yeah there were times that her appearances got sidelined and so forth in us not seeing her as much. But I'll mention that briefly later with regards to Ishidas writing style with some of his characters.
Firstly, with the “independence” part… a characters relations they have with others doesn’t make them weak that goes concurrently with their very own distinct development. (obviously depending on the circumstances mind you and how its established)
In fact the narrative in TG shows how taking things up solely alone leads to more suffering and increased burden that ultimately comes crashing down towards said character without the bonds they form with others. (Eg Kanekis main flaw that Touka opposes with selfish V selfless that she explicitly exposes him for in part 1 with the bridge scene) Note that there are semblances that both invoke and affect each with in a complementary/similar yet opposing way that I've talked about before in the Touken reflection.
Kaneki takes everyone's burdens by himself in order to protect them, but he's not really the selfless martyr he thinks he is. They never asked for his protection, in fact they want to help and be with him, but he's terrified of losing them, thus opting to shoulder all their burdens. He pushed them away and avoided them in order to protect them, AKA Hide and Touka. In doing so it hurts both sides immensely in not being able to really save the other.
Touka can not only see a bit of Arata and Ayato (soldier of Aogiri) in Kaneki with regards to the whole pursuit of power and strength by waging war and advancing violence to protect, but also a bit of herself in some her own actions done to protect those she cares about that they themselves did not ask for. She hits the nail right on the coffin with him because she knows how he is, because she has that affect on him.
Tumblr media
This is seen in the novels to an extent with her fighting off students that made fun of Yoriko. Yoriko mentioned that she didn't want Touka to do that for her even though it hurt her. The situation simply just made her more sad, along with Yorikos own lack of self worth in feeling like she was a burden to Touka.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Touka partakes in her revenge against Mado and the doves for killing Ryouko in order to protect Hinami
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a similar thing happens (which wasn't all violence as seen by her trying to give misinformation to the CCG and stir attention away from them).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hinami laments that she never wanted revenge, but was rather just sad. In both instances Touka doesn't understand why her protecting them through those means was wrong at first, but we see how it affects her in each case with regards to the feelings of those she cares about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Touka mentions Ayatos reluctance in not wanting to learn more about human society and wanting to safely protect him when it's the same human society that led to their parents demise and one that is systematically established to kill them . After all, humans are just food to them as ghouls, and ghouls are monsters to them right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With these genuinely selfless actions and ideals, she realized how they pushed the people she cared about. Actually it's quite sad how Touka is always getting abandoned by those she cares about in her life, such as Hikari,Arata,Ayato,Kaneki, Hinami, Yoshimura, Irimi, Koma, Yoriko etc etc. Obviously each of these throughout her life have different factors to them through her own actions and those of others that led to being left alone and or tragically losing them.
Tumblr media
Along with this is generally her struggle in communicating/expressing her true feelings towards others through words alone which can often lead to ironic misunderstandings in the moment that she regrets many times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(which is a trait she shares with Yomo and Ayato).
“I'm really bad at sorting out my feelings, and although I try to put up a good front, I'm incredibly immature, and I hate that about myself”-Touka
Man the novels really are such gems with extra insight to her character. In essence you can show how she does have good intentions. She really doesn't want to lose more of her loved ones and be alone, unless it involves letting go in certain situations and considerations.
I’m not necessarily justifying her relapse in actions here, but you can see just how pissed off she got with Kanekis tragic heroism vendetta
Tumblr media
,that and well the man straight up lied about not leaving her alone. (thanks Hide for the chin tip).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes Kaneki does genuinely want to “protect” his loved ones,
Tumblr media
but he's doing it all wrong in never even considering their own feelings in regard to his whole quest and them being unable to help him, hence being selfish and not wanting to be alone himself. As we see, it’s something he eventually realizes due to Touka’s effect on him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(which is another thing that both share, fear of being alone that they express differently yet similarly) Cool how the whole rabbit motif is used to exemplify this too, since they can die from loneliness due to the strong relationship bonds they form.
Doing everything alone is a constant no no in TG. Cough Kenny boy, rely on your loved ones, they love you. Though we see how and why he and many others in the story become that way with the whole “you're weak and lack of ability” perception for power and strength. It’s very understandable for many of these characters and it’s quite profound with the many layers to it aside from just the physical that at times come across as very contradictory. “Weakness in strength and strength in weakness”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tangent, but this also goes in conjunction with Uries development in overcoming that very same flaw he had himself to where he realized it faster than Kaneki did.
Tumblr media
And of course the whole point of the dragon arc to show that people, in other words everyone (ghouls and humans) HAVING to rely on each other to combat a common threat and achieve coexistence when needed to even with the flawed prejudiced nature of the human world towards ghoul kind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, back to Touka chan.
I really do not believe Touka to be a “weak” character. In fact she’s very strong in her own way since there’s many different types of “strength” and complexities to many of these characters. One who’s strength does not solely rely on her physical abilities or quick thinking/hard work (I mean hell she caught up to years of school at a late age almost gearing up to go to Kamii university which is for proper smart students whilst working at Ainteku). And of course her curiosity on learning more about the world with regards to humans and ghouls that she later instilled in a rather practical sentimental manner as an “advisory” figure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ya’ll remember when she was basically hood AF in the streets with that underground ghoul dialect?
Tumblr media
By the way holy hell she can speak two languages, that's pretty dope. Except for those skills in Japanese literature... lol that’s just a Rip😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Point being there are many different testaments of complexity and strength she possess as her own character away from just “the physical”.
Growth
Touka’s character matures and grows a lot in :re becoming more passive, cool headed and wiser as the manager of :re. Like when I first read :re bruh, I was always like “woah this is Touka now? Damn she's changed so much” (and got more thicc)
Tumblr media
even with some of her distinct traits still being there… Like her blunt and direct 0 fucks teasing sass, I love me some sass. She definitely lived up to Aintekus legacy and then some with Yoshimuras influence.
Tumblr media
She valued the importance of peacekeeping as manager of :re, and its implied that her, Yomo and Nishki performed those roles, similar to how Yoshimura did with the bits of informants they had from others as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She became not just more empathetic but generally more sympathetic to an extent, understanding and kind towards others most especially those that wronged her, those she cares about and those she herself has hurt in the past.  We see this time and time again.
Few examples include her giving Shinohara the flowers
Tumblr media
tying into her forgiveness arc with Arata, the violent CCG perpetual cycle in general, and also got tied in with Juuzou
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
which got referenced as a point of contention for their characters during their encounter underground.
We see this with Shuu and her explanation for why cafe :re exists as an homage to Ainteku for humans and for ghouls to feel safe in (the spiritual home of coexistence) , as well as a place for Kaneki to return home to, as Yoshimura once wished for with Eto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Touka prioritizes his well being and happiness over hers, even with the flawed situation wherein they both care about Kaneki in their own way and have differing viewpoints.
Tumblr media
Shuu admits to Touka that she’s right in him being an egotist, alongside seeing her point of view when he fights Haise.
Tumblr media
Touka also admits that she understands where Shuu is coming from, because she does desire for Kaneki to be with them.
Tumblr media
Both parties raise valid points in their own way since they do genuinely care, however the difference in intent further shows that selfless nature of Touka in waiting for Kaneki to come back when HE needs to, not by forcing him when Haise had the whole Haise/Kaneki memory personality conflict that he needed to resolve himself that we see in the Rosewald and Cochlea arcs.
It’s also interesting to note how Kaneki in part 1 distanced himself to protect her from the ghoul world whilst being aware that she as a ghoul can never truly live with just being solely in the human world and the dangers that it possesses in it’s own right towards ghouls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In :re she means for him not be brought back into the ghoul world due to his suffering in it for so long in order to protect his well being and happiness.
Tumblr media
Yet the human world he lives in the CCG is also categorized by violence, suffering and conflict that Haise/Kaneki gets further thrown into. Plus we see how Shuu himself feels about that world due to what happened with his own family in their battle against CCG and Kaneki/Haise being a ghoul investigator. Both cases show how genuine and flawed these motives are, yet also painting the feelings they have in caring for the other in their own distinct ways that's not as straightforward black and white. “Selfish V Selfless”
She forgives her brother Ayato because she understood him to an extent with his faults (not that she ever harbored hatred for him in the first place because she loves him).
Touka sees why he did the things he did because. He wanted to become stronger in Aogiri and protect her, even though he hurt her, as Kaneki exposed to him in their fight. Cue 103 god damn bones.
“Does it hurt? I think Touka chan experienced more pain than that”- Kaneki
Tumblr media
Yeah nah... That’s just tough😂 Later on we see how Ayato took this to heart by taking on the Black Rabbit persona in order to lure CCG investigators away from Touka, thus clearing her tracks.
Tumblr media
With this she goes to assure him with sincerity in directing him in the right path moving forward despite everything, thus mending their complicated sibling relationship in their own Tsundere Kirishima way.
Tumblr media
She gives Kaneki his will to live through her loyal love, influence and support spanning years and years of waiting with the undying faith she possesses towards those she cares about and to him. Not that she had to herself anyway since Kaneki always held her on such a high level of importance in his life throughout the whole story with ALL his personalities and their whole evolutionary dynamic as a whole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's another thing about her, that fierce faith is truly special despite the instances it isn’t rewarded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean when this man was on the verge of losing everything and giving in on his plan to die in style, the thought of her and everyone else dying kept him going along with the Hide inner monologue during the Arima fight.
“It may not be stylish, but live”
Tumblr media
She allows Goat and the lost ghouls (including the Aogiri children) to use cafe :re as their safety hideout away from CCG, that has CCG members themselves (AKA 0 squad). Once again reinforcing that spiritual home of coexistence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Side note- another cool tidbit is seeing Toukas natural maternal instincts with children, something we saw bits of with Hinami and Ayato in part 1 as well as the novels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her taking care of the ghoul children with Hinami and reading to them were always super adorable to see in also foreshadowing her as a mother and just generally a very kind caring person which she's always been at heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next big demonstration of her growth we see is the convo with Amon in which they both come to a mutual understanding of the circumstances that forced their actions in such a cruel world of kill or be killed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
alongside her offering advice to him about going to see Akira in relation to her feelings about Kaneki.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there’s the Akira convo with Hinami: which remains one of my favorites indications of how much she’s developed from part 1 (also because of how similar Touka and Akira are in many ways... I love em). Chapter 120 was one of the first major steps towards seeing how these characters can break the human/ghoul violent perpetual cycle with general empathy and even sympathy to an extent as difficult as it may be. To instill hope into their world, where all they knew was hopeless continuous bloodshed.
Tumblr media
Being able to confront Akira directly with what happened, not being focused on continuing the cycle of revenge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going on to showcase some semblance of being able to relate with her own experiences and of their fathers in painting the cruel intricate nature of both sides in regards to the actions they take- be it survival, revenge, power to protect, or all the above. Thus slowly shifting Akira’s ingrained beliefs and perspective to it’s core.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's interesting how Ishida mentioned inspiration from a war documentary applied in the reconciliation between Akira and Hinami , and Touka was the one that initiated that through her development and teachings from others and her own life experiences.

Mind you this was a VERY complicated and tough situation wherein those wounds aren’t somehow magically healed between them, but at the very least the continuous cycle of vengeance was subverted in order to move forward.
She's often seen as a very forgiving person towards others in :re, too forgiving at times actually, which is one of her biggest strengths and weaknesses. Or that she doesn't “fight hard” enough and let's go too easily.  But one can also see why she's like that, mainly due to the priorities she sets and well… she ain't got time to dwell on things like revenge, war and violence anymore even if it's completely warranted and justified. She's seen and experienced first hand what that does to herself and others time and time again. She knows the script and prioritizes moving forward away from that, even if it hurts her and them having to constantly pick and choose in the process.
Tumblr media
As long as a situation of conflict can be resolved in any way, they'll continue to live and survive in the world. Mental fortitude is a big strength of hers when it comes to pressing forward in the face of adversity.
It’s even more notable to notice this development when looking back at the violent, angsty and tragic harsh life she lived as a ghoul with Ayato from childhood towards their teens years. After all it's a kill or be killed world, one where the strong take from the weak, and the weak are the ones that perish.
Tumblr media
That and how viciously she lashed out at others, herself and the world through violence and rage due to that bloody ghoul lifestyle. The hard harsh exterior, soft kind interior continuously interchanged, intertwined and crossed several thresholds.
Highkey nice heavy parallel to Hikari and Arata though. As Yomo mentioned, Hikari used to be quite savage back when she was younger until she calmed down later on in life with her family, and where Arata was a really kind pacifist type ghoul, her death led to him later becoming a “monster” out of revenge that resulting in his downfall. In many ways also applying to both Touka and Kaneki with their own unique divergences. And of course the parallels between Ayato and Yomo in regards to their respective pursuits for strength and revenge.
“The world is power, let’s use power to decide who’s superior. Careless idiot. You are weak. So you lose. Just like father.”- Ayato
“Who is the strongest? I fucking am”- Kaneki
“...I want to become strong”- Yomo
“I also need to get stronger”- Touka
“Strength in weakness and weakness in strength”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Strength” and “power” as a whole is extremely intricate, with all the different types of it in its many variations/forms that come with their own respective advantages and disadvantages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So many of these different attributes and aspects we see to be something that many characters in the story come to admire from Touka as a person, a ghoul , sister, friend, wife and manager of :re/ fellow leader of GOAT along with Kaneki and right hand man Shuu.
Sure Ishida could have definitely utilized and actually showcased more scenes with her doing things in which we could see a lot of this development/moments onscreen, especially the first half of :re (as a matter of fact I’d be on the first train to destination MORE TOUKA STUFF AND WRITING EMPHASIS PLEASE)
But one can also deduce the salient impact of her smaller scale actions/motivations that attribute to the plot, many characters and the very essence of the story thematically and even that of her character. A phrase I always use to describe that belief is “Yo Touka is doing bits” which basically means how those moments may seem really minuscule at first, but are actually very meaningful.
This also includes her evolving personality from part 1 as a consequence of the melancholic and painful stoic adverse nature of the world that genuinely did affect her for many years on end. There’s also kind of parallel with her really. Second half of part 1 Touka scenes weren’t as much in favor of Kaneki and other characters development, but they were very impactful in their own moments, in contrast to the first half of :re with a similar sentiment.
Plus I mean well, one can see how much Ishida struggled with writing his main cast of characters in :re with part 1 characters and side characters with some getting more development/ specific writing priority over others in different fashions alongside MANY plot points and concepts. That and yes several plot points and character interactions with her did get dropped in the story/didn't get as much development on screen as they should have, which mind you isn't just exclusive to her character alone like in the case of several others. One little missed opportunity is the Yoriko reunion that didn't happen on screen which was really unfortunate as that would have been so emotional to see for them both, (and me since I kept waiting for it)
But at least she saw her wedding with Bujin to make sure she was ok
Tumblr media
and them reuniting offscreen during the end time skip was good. Ichika loving aunty Yorikos bread and Mucchans apples is a blessing, so thank goodness for that.
Tumblr media
And yes there's a lot of other stuff that could be mentioned as well that would have been great to see onscreen, but eh what can you do.
While many favor her character in part 1, which is fair because my god she was fire AF🔥
Tumblr media
it’s also important to notice all the subtle factors that led to her personality and growth shifting the way it did from a teenager to young adult whilst still maintaining her distinct “Touka” traits (then again I love her in everything so😅). That’s the whole point of it, to show how people change in life, what would be the point if she remained the exact same as part 1 in terms of writing?
Again, different strokes for different folks, but I personally appreciate both depictions and find them very fascinating in their own rights especially with their flaws that continuously kept me glued to her character even with the discrepancies in screen time.
In other words, I find her journey very interesting to read and interpret, particularly since there’s a lot of writing cues to her in favor of being designated in deciphering rather than explicitly stated in all lines of text and dialogue. Perhaps that’s the main issue with some aside from the whole her not being shown as much? The fact that a lot of the writing is nuanced in several ways and not as right in your face with text panels/ inner monologues and inner character thoughts emphasized and fleshed out? Either way, those visual cues/elements of show don’t tell and at times “less equals more” being implemented in the story are ones that always make me so passionate about her character. To ascertain her thoughts, feelings, actions and motivations  when the narrative doesn’t state it as right in your face but rather deduced through the already established notions and elements that are set/keep getting set.
I have no idea if I’m making sense😑
Tumblr media
But yeah that’s how I see it. Like something as simple as her just not saying anything, or words being omitted in favor of emphasis being placed on subtle visual representation in a panel just makes me want to always see more of her and decipher her thoughts without her even having to state all of them outwardly. This conveyance without the need of many words (which don’t get me wrong would be greatly appreciated in many instances!) doesn’t really hinder her as boring to me, rather very intriguing, but again each to their own you know?
Tumblr media
Continuing on her desire to be with those she loves and not be alone, in other words to gain as much as she can with the little available while losing things. She told Ayato the same sentiment which can ESPECIALLY be meant for Kaneki too.
“Rely on others for a change”
An aspect of her strength stems from her ability and strong personality in which she carries herself when all the odds are against her, and when she herself is very limited to what she can achieve by herself alone in the world, yet continues to fight either way. In other words… she’s realistic in seeing the world as it is with all ones flawed strengths and weaknesses in the face of the tribulations they face and the choices they must make for better or for worse, positive and negative. It also shows the priorities she places in fighting reactively, in other words when she HAS to or in regards to those she cares about where she would rather avoid using violence to solve conflicts in :re unless pressed to do so in response to something or when pressed.
Eg. Saving Shuu from CCG investigators that were on his ass.

Sneaky sister save as mask 33.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and versus Arima himself (which honestly that's just a Rip for the whole family).
Tumblr media
Being aided by Eto to push on forwards.
Tumblr media
Fighting off Special class Kyoko Aura, Mougan and other CCG members with the other ghouls namely Yomo, Banjou, his squad and Hinami when they themselves were already fatigued. And of course protecting Ayato
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
showcasing her emerging two wings with that based Hikari Yomo lightning ⚡⚡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later combining forces with Kaneki and 0 squad to escape.
Then there's her fight against Mutsuki that endangered not just her and Kanekis lives, but led to the destruction of :re. The whole shit underground wherein they got attacked whilst already starved and with little resources, forcing retaliation to survive.
Tumblr media
And of course operation save Kenny and Tokyo with dragon. (Title drop)
Tumblr media
That doesn’t necessarily make her “weak”, or one who doesn't do much fighting because she's a damsel, particularly when she’s PREGNANT from 128 to the 170s. She fights only when pushed to do so.
Again in 123-124 she held her own against Mutsuki (who’s very strong) when her cafe got destroyed by the oggai and kept her cool, suppressing her emotions when taunted with Yorikos fake “fate” in an attempt to get her all triggered (once more showing her development in :re as part 1 Touka would have definitely lashed out in justified rage)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see she's clearly hurt by this in 124 despite her trying desperately to subvert that fact and not showcase that much emotion when Kaneki asks if she's ok. She's obviously not as another home/dream of hers got crushed, and its conveyed so effectively yet subdued without her even saying much via her vulnerable posture and her switching the subject to Hide in order to deal with her own feelings about Yoriko, but also that of how Kaneki felt about both Hide and Touka in this painful situation.
Tumblr media
Both distanced themselves from their friends in order to protect them, yet yearned desperately to see them. Kaneki did the same with Touka and Hide, Touka did the same with Yoriko and Haise/Kaneki, and as was revealed via talking about Hide- was something he couldn't do anything about. Because if he thought about it, he'd just be consumed by the desire to see them again. Cue Akon “Lonely, I'm mister lonely” and them rooting like rabbits.
You can see how without even saying anything through her facial expressions how Touka feels,
Tumblr media
She’s able to connect everything in regards to how they mutually feel the same about this with their friends and their own feelings for each other. Both were terrified of the other dying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which of course led to them finally being able to close that gap of loneliness and pain in which they made love and consummated their relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite all the fuckery of the world around them, all the war that they were in, for just one moment they were finally able to experience happiness in the darkness that both had craved for so long with each other, and it speaks volumes to one of the most important and emotionally resonate symbolic messages of the series. Breaking the barrier between both worlds.
Tumblr media
Ghoul-Human
Hell speaking about the unplanned pregnancy, let’s go back to the human esc journey. The narrative has explicitly explained the dangers of human food consumption for ghouls since the very beginning.
Tumblr media
In her fight with Ayato, it’s clear how this type of lifestyle has considerably weakened her full ghoul potential in reference to her one Ukaku wing
Tumblr media
and lack of that cold ghoul intensity she used to have as Shuu states.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As mentioned before, Ayato finds her wanting to be part of human society (that denotes weakness) to be idiotic and dangerous due to what happened with their parents and Arata’s upbringing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leading his pursuit for ghoul strength and hatred towards humans in Aogiri (which does change through his own development later on)
Yomo also criticized this during their training via her eating Yorikos food to fit in so much at school (novels and part 1)
Tumblr media
and the Itori talk to Kaneki about the failures of ghoul-human hybrids which also gets referenced later with the flawed half humans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later we see Touka ask Kaneki about how Eto was kept alive with Yoshimura a ghoul father and Ukina a human mother. The difference of course is the  reverse in the situation for a ghoul mother.
Tumblr media
And of course Mutsuki’s taunting during their second big fight where Touka was at a clear disadvantage.
Tumblr media
SHE KNOWS human food is bad for her body due to its weakening effect. It's been a reoccurring thing for her ever since her upbringing with Arata and what influenced her curiosity in wanting to understand humans and the world they live in. Simultaneously it’s almost like she herself is fighting against that known fact and still trying desperately to fit into some kind of normal human esc style of life as a ghoul when she knows she realistically can't.
Tumblr media
To be able to enjoy things like cake, burgers and so forth when her ghoul body prohibits this. After all as ghouls they have no choice but to eat humans. Kaneki himself is even baffled by the lengths she would go just to uphold Yorikos feelings over her own. I mean she could easily just lie and not eat the food at all right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yet she still goes the extra mile to not only protect Yorikos feelings whilst endangering herself because she cares so much, but also fight against the notion of her being a ghoul to an almost foolish extent.
Tumblr media
It’s why the whole “don’t die, push through me, live” as she’s forcing herself to eat human food to try save her unborn child Ichika is so powerful in contrast to the strong will by Ukina (a human) who actually can digest and cannibalize human meat for her hybrid child Eto.
Tumblr media
For a ghoul to eat human food, is essentially like hell, and if she didn't, her body would naturally consume the foetus, furthermore adding to the perception of her being a monster by taking her own child's life. Her chance at becoming a mother and starting a family would be lost. That's why she’s willing to do anything to give her child even the faintest 1% chance of survival, regardless of how it may hurt and weaken her or how slim the possibilities of success are. [x- great commentary by @mamasaiko and @lilacflamesss !)
That’s why her becoming pregnant didn’t hinder her character to me, it restricted her full potential absolutely, but it also presented the opportunity to put her into extremely constrained dangerous scenarios wherein her immense fortitude and willpower would be tested to its limits with regards to her ability to always make choices, for better or for worse. Again it’s that strength we see numerous characters admire from her.  The hybrid pregnancy is something that should be a very positive thing and very well is as with the whole hope and symbolic aspect of the series for some semblance of light in the darkness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It presented the main core message of coexistence in breaking away from the tragic cycle that several characters looked towards, yet it was also one due to situation/wrong timing  that added more struggles and tribulations to be faced. THAT’S THE CONFLICTING DILEMMA that was so damn enthralling and stressful AF to bear witness to!
Her being able to make tough choices time and time again whether she likes them or not. The underground alone had her being forced to lead the ghouls (including children) out of danger and leave her loved ones in order to protect herself, her unborn child and the lives of those ghouls. From Yomo,
Tumblr media
to 0 squad,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to Hinami all in quick succession… SHE DOESN’T WANT to leave her loved ones, she hates doing that with them having to protect her and being abandoned. But in the situation it’s something she HAS to do by trusting them with that faith. In fact we see in her situation with Hinami how desperately she tries to aid her even with her weakened condition by getting all pissed off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was only when Hinami told her to go protect the children did she finally make that choice.
Tumblr media
We don't even see her clouded facial expression or her thoughts, their blocked, which further adds the front she's trying so hard to put in order to remain strong and keep going even though we know it's absolutely killing her inside. She tries to reach out Hinami, but she knows she can't waste more time in hesitating with her decision given the situation, because if she did… well they'd all get fucked.
Tumblr media
It's also quite poignant to note the arcs of both here. Hinami herself is still by all means a child of sorts, or rather a young adult protecting her older sister figure, as Touka did for her in part 1 and the novels.
Tumblr media
Hinami's character development is one for strength and self worth, and it was depicted very beautifully yet sad with her monologue about her own perceived weakness she expressed to Ayato and how she viewed Touka and Kaneki in being a burden to them, hence seeking strength by joining Aogiri.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hinami was able to fight side by side with Touka in her weakened condition, both watching each others backs.
Tumblr media
Which is something that makes Touka proud in how much Hinami has grown, yet it also adds to the whole “living while losing things” in that situation in trusting her strength against such volatile odds in order to press forwards with her own survival, that of her unborn child and that of the other helpless ghouls when she hates doing so but has to do so.  Like Ryouko did for Hinami.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Special mention is Hinamis admiration for her stemming all the way from the beginning “strong, delicate, beautiful”. You did wonderfully in becoming all that and more with your development too Hina👏
When she sees Yorikos letter, SHE WANTS TO SAVE HER and you can see how shocked and pained she is her just by her facial expression
Tumblr media
but given Goats very volatile position and Kaneki “dying” at the time, she simply can’t as it would jeopardize their whole organization, and thus she chooses her family, Kaneki and their child when Kaneki himself struggles with his own indecisiveness that could have truly been a trap to lure them into action not based on fortified assurance.
Tumblr media
This is another instance Kaneki greatly admires in contrast to his flaw in being indecisive and choosing.
Tumblr media
The circumstance itself places this cruel obligation on her to make those choices, but she makes them either way because she has to, otherwise as we’ve seen in TG, failure in making a choice leads to more tragedy. Shit even MAKING choice or choosing not to MAKE a choice can still very well result in that. She COULD have very well elected to save Yoriko, similar to how they went to save Hinami in cochlea (with Ayato, Yomo and Banjou squad) or save Kaneki when he get got captured by Aogiri
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in contrast to how she elected to save Kaneki in the dragon arc (joining forces with CCG and the ghouls). These are all separate choices due to different circumstances and considerations that she makes within those emotional situations, and I love the little line in 148 that she says to Nishki.
Tumblr media
“What should I do?”
Tumblr media
She contemplates all the factors and elements available in making a choice. Can they with just the ghouls save Kaneki and Tokyo at large? How do they do that in the first place with the limited resources they have? All she’s known is loss, so... should they just carry on living with that for their own survival when Tokyo is in danger? [x]
Tumblr media
Like… there's a lot of unspoken suffering that she was going through in that whole arc alone. Her very own husband and father of their child who called her a monster in the beginning,
Tumblr media
became one himself in order to protect them and see her again by devouring most of Tokyo consisting of humans, ghouls and children when they were all on the brink…
Tumblr media
That's tough... and really fucked up. But given the pushed situation (that sure could have been subverted prior), a choice had to be made once again in which they'd face the consequences either way.
Whilst I’ve said that a defining trait of hers is that decisiveness and ability to choose, she herself always contemplates her choices and the consequences thereof even when they are purely emotionally driven. Should I do this? Should I do that? What if I had done this? What if I had done that? In fact that’s the thing about TG in general with MANY characters.  As a matter of fact it applies to the whole cast in general really.
Tumblr media
The choices they make, and how it’s not always about whether they are “right” or “wrong” but about how they’re made and how one continues pushing forward from said choice. “Forever choosing, forever being chosen”
And of course the dilemma between one's desire for even the tiniest semblance of happiness opposed to the tough predicament they face and all the outcomes that results from it that prohibit such.
“Why do things have to be like this?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her breakdown at the end of part 1 added greatly to that during the Ainteku raid where they lost everything. She wanted to go help everyone, she didn't want to lose them, yet Yomo stopped her because they had to choose not to in order for them to keep on living with Yoshimura, Irimi and Komas sacrifice, otherwise it would have all been for naught. “Live while losing things”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaneki chose to go fight in order to aid/protect everyone because he was tired of not being able to do anything anymore. As a result, it led to his subsequent “death” and tragedy (with the exception of buying time for Irima and Koma v Arima)
Tumblr media
In fact he ponders what if he had chosen to stay away and gone with Touka and Yomo. Perhaps he'd have been able to work with them in the new cafe?
Tumblr media
Perhaps if Touka and Yomo went to fight with Kaneki they'd make a difference? Perhaps if Kaneki didn't go all alone in 143 of :re the situation may have played out differently in contrast to how Furuta exposed him?
Tumblr media
The answer is yes, no, maybe, maybe not. No one knows, and it's easy to continuously contemplate every single possibility and theoretical outcome. All that matters is how they have to make those tough choices and live with them, no matter the cost.
Also the fact that we only rarely see her true vulnerable, insecure and visible emotions other then when she's like... angry or something is another trait I find very interesting. Because when we do, it’s impactful and hits home just how much she tends to internalize within herself. In other words, the front she puts on. Her always suppressing her emotions with that strong mental fortitude speaks volumes of the struggles she continuously undergoes internally and externally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That emotional breakdown was just building bruh.
Tumblr media
The fact that we don’t have to be told exactly what she’s thinking or how she’s feeling, but are rather shown how she’s trying to hold herself together even with her face either turned away from the reader or her turning her back in several panel illustrations denotes so many melancholic elements to be interpreted within the story.
Another side note- some are actually quite funny and aesthetically appealing to me. She just looks so tired/bored and like... done with everything with those half lidded eyes that convey so much (Idk I just relate heavy AF with that😂)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hence always looking for those subtle details in her character that add so many layers. Ooo also the times when we get to see both her eyes (true feelings), that's super cool.
Relying on the strength of others is not weak in wanting to help protect them. I mean nothing is wrong at all in wanting to become stronger by yourself for the sake of others, but going completely solo and shouldering all those burdens with just one's own strength is completely detrimental to the highest degree.
In fact her fighting with that pregnant condition when she shouldn’t have and being able to fend for herself before said condition along with her Ukaku stamina issues, stress, lack of sleep and starving inevitably prohibited her full potential is in itself also inspiring. Like dude wtf she's out here fighting with all those disadvantaged restrictions that endanger her? That's badass. Being faced with the predicament of WHAT TO DO versus WHAT ONE CAN DO with limited means. And yet with all that, she still dug Kaneki from dragon by herself after fending off Mutsuki
Tumblr media
 and the dragon clones
Tumblr media
with the timely aid of Urie, Saiko. Even Mutsuki, the one she fought prior and tried to reach out to peacefully given the dire situation and not their own personal differences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Symbolically the wife of Kaneki, and children of Haise Sasaki came together to save him in that instance with the foreshadowing of the Qs and dragon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Touka was key to the dragon arc in general. That was the point of the whole arc, further showing the fruits of her development as well, combining strength with others, both humans and ghouls. All elements needed each other to succeed. There’s a reason Hide went out to look for Touka in the ghoul camp.
Tumblr media
Not to mention how crucially important these two are throughout the narrative in reference to the fool's journey namely the Magician (Hide) and the High Priestess (Touka) to the fool (Kaneki)
“The Magician and High Priestess are absolutely equal in importance and value. Each is necessary for balance” [x]
He himself was extremely vital in gathering all the different sides and information for the pieces to be in place such as Marude, Urie, Kimi with the CCG, recruiting Amon and Akira, and of course Touka with the ghouls.
Touka leading the ghouls there after being ignited by Shuus emotional fire speech
Tumblr media
and all the assurance to combine their strength and efforts with the CCG was a true indication of that. Great stuff by all 3 Aces (Touka, Hide, Shuu) right there. [nice catch! @kanekikenunot]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Touka coming up with the ring idea was of extreme importance, in fact it was the very idea that kick started the whole operation in the first place!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beforehand was her translating the underground ghoul dialect thanks to Ayatos adventure underground
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in order to form the pieces necessary to ignite the operation by condensing the seemingly impossible search for Kaneki to being more focused and fortified to the point that they could track him down with Shuu and Mirimos influence with the metal detectors.
Worthy note is the perception she emits to Hide in always not being able to save Kaneki and him always saving her. We know she has saved him numerous times physically, emotionally, and mentally and the same with Kaneki to her, but it's important to note how she mentions “this time”.
Tumblr media
It's like despite all the times they've saved each other with all those different aspects, something always caused them to get separated or to face more and more suffering painting all the times as somewhat futile. And this time, given the monster he's become, she means to truly save him at all costs no matter what.
And my god, chapter 160 is one of my favorites due to the parallel with 145 where Kaneki lost control becoming dragon with it having no dialogue whatsoever in favor of pure visual storytelling.
You could just feel the sheer immense strain, pressure, rampant despair and pain of Touka desperately trying to save her husband.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Silent Scream is what I call these two chapters that I talked about before, wherein the omission of words paints the whole “a picture is worth a thousand words”.
Tumblr media
Her breakdown was so emotionally resonate with how we hardly see her like that. Referencing back to the visuals without having to be shown lines of text or dialogue. Something as simple as her finding Kanekis hand grasping her parents ring (the bond that ties their own marriage together) in pressing forward like a centipede with Touka as his sole motivation and strength, is definitely something that destroys her in which you can just hear the horrifying scream she emits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because she's not just reminded of her impending failure with the current situation, but also the tragedy that befell her own parents, and the cycle of revenge she was a part of with Mado  that aided in her ability to empathize with Akira and Amon.  [good eye! @dreamofcentipedes]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's these little tiny details that are always there, and while sure some may be a stretch in providing more depth/ over reaching, they remain considerations that add so much. For a moment she ponders if the tragic cycle is something they'll never be able to break free from, whether it's something that will always keep them trapped in the birdcage, unable to fly towards a clear blue sky, something she always looks towards in many panel illustrations. [x]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yet despite it all she never gave up, her faith kept pushing her forwards to continue the mission. And she was able to succeed. Her efforts and choices were not in vain.
Yo... scope this little line here.. “Don't push yourself ok”
Tumblr media
Touka… Dude… We don't deserve you honestly. Finna say that after all the fuckery you just went through in pushing yourself... smh
Tumblr media
Still out here not resting waiting for your man's to wake up and be ok.
Tumblr media
Top tier I swear...(PLS GET SOME SLEEP)
Which then shows another instance of that non verbal communication during her embrace with Kaneki. Within that one swift motion and the “thump” sound effect presumably of their hearts beating, she conveyed all she needed to without having to say anything.
Tumblr media
Thank goodness she was finally able to rest by the end and chill with Saiko is best Saiko, because honestly… She needed that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And although she had to continue waiting (god how long has she had to that ?) for her loved ones to return,
Tumblr media
that fierce faith was fortunately rewarded with Ayato and Kaneki returning in the end.
Like I said, one of the many reasons I admire Toukas strength so much is that it strays away from the typical norm that would usually warrant a narrative tool in making one “weaker” via the ghoul-human journey just for the sake of it or for her to be “helpless”.
“Go, you are not just some onlooker, nor are you powerless. You just have other things to protect right?”-Yomo
And I just… really want to root for her to overcome all the odds that are placed in her and everyone else's paths in whatever way they can. “Strength in weakness, weakness in strength”
It’s not exactly an underdog story classification, but instead to me points out an interesting conflict between ones seemingly futile (at the time given the high failure rate) yet deepest desires/ wishes for some semblance of hopeful happiness in the world.  And ones need to survive by any limited means often being forced to make hard to impossible choices accordingly so to protect and live with the few means available to them that they can achieve by themselves alone, and or with that of others.
Bruh… I could go on rambling forever and I'd still be missing several points😓 that many others have mentioned too. But essentially her undying love, selflessness, compassion, faith, and strength are qualities that have always stood out to me in their own right since the beginning until the very end. And in general it’s just truly satisfying that by the end all her suffering, waiting and perseverance paid off.  Although it was never explicitly stated, many (including myself) speculate that she did open up another coffee shop by the end, which would be a really nice ribbon bow touch to that as well. 3rd times the charm?
Tumblr media
She was finally to gain the normal life that she never thought possible with the combined efforts of both sides, the worlds that Kaneki found a place in. Being able to peacefully live with her family, husband, baby girl Ichika (with another boyo on the way) and loved ones.
Tumblr media
Her wish for happiness was granted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personally Toukas character journey has truly been a pleasure to witness over over the course of the series, and it’s one that has forever put her in such a special place in my heart, compelling flaws and all😄

The english dub went HARD on this scene and I love them for it
(Just in case, tw for lots of blood and ghoul self-harm)
Not only is Austin Tindle great at voicing those lines, but that "Is this what you want? For us to kill each other??" is entirely dub-only. That line doesn't exist in the japanese sub. I was blown away at how well the dub's dialouge additions elevated this scene.

J: even if you say you’re an anime n00b, you probably have an understanding of shoujo tropes. too bad this breaks all the stereotypes!! it’ll make you laugh, i guarantee. characters are as clueless as hoshi is with technology and i’m sure all of them will never be in a relationship.
Ao Haru Ride / Blue Spring Ride
J: if GSNK breaks all the shoujo tropes, this one has all of them!!!! even so, it’s still pretty good- i bet you woozi can make a song or two from this anime (though i know his main muse will be full moon wo sagashite- also a good anime!)
Orange
J: slice-of-life anime about a group of friends who try to save one of their own. prepare tissues.
Ouran High School Host Club
J: if you love seventeen and their dynamic, you’ll love this too!! shoutout to my girl haruhi for dealing with all of the host club’s shit.
Your Lie in April
V: A male pianist and a female violinist play music together. also prepare tissues…you’ll understand the meaning of the anime title at the very last episode lol.
Ore Monogatari / My Love Story
J: this is…really…the purest love story…you just have to watch it, seriously…it’s as pure as seventeen adore u, mansae, and pretty u eras
Sports
Haikyuu!! (a personal fav of seventeen!)
J: be prepared to binge watch this because i know i did!! it’s a heartwarming story with lots of nicely-placed (and not forced) comedy. but i mean, it’s volleyball. **seungkwan endorses it**
Kuroko no Basuke
J: has the most cliche shit in a sports anime (i’ve watched like 5 sports anime so idk how accurate this statement is). friendship!!! teamwork!!! ridiculous basketball powers!!! but we can overcome everything when we work hard!!!
Yuuri On Ice!!!
J: ice skating anime. VERY GAY. no queerbaiting here- it’s GAY AS FUCK. you really have to admire and root for our main boy yuuri here though. he is truly a precious katsudon
Chihayafuru
J: at first glace, it MAY look like shoujo, but our main girl chihaya over here is 120% focused on karuta. because who needs boys who are in an unrequited love with you right?? still has the power of friendship and teamwork, which is always a must in sports anime!!
Shounen
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
J: personally picking this over the earlier version of FMA only because this follows more closely to the canon (manga) storyline. it really does have a wonderful storyline with rich characters and great development and you’ll feel satisfied with the story when you finish it
Hunter x Hunter (2011 but i have a soft spot for the older ver too)
J: this one has a little bit of everything: friendship, teamwork, sports, magical abilities, ~family~ (the main 4 are family don’t fight me on this), beautifully written characters, great storylines, a creepy ass clown,
Bungou Stray Dogs
J: um joshua personally recommended this so you should watch it. MC works in a detective agency that has staff with *abilities*. definitely lots of action. fun fact: the characters are named after famous people in literature and their abilities are named after their work! the first arc of season 2 is a personal favorite of mine
Code Geass
J: basically tells the story of a revolution against the current government. our main boy here, (sometimes douchey) lelouche pretty much leads the revolution accompanied by an ability he acquired- his geass. very mecha and has fighting robots action!!
Death Note
J: an even bigger douche than lelouche, light yagami is out to reform the current justice system by taking it upon himself to play god. someone give him an oscar for his performance honestly this bitch really knows how to act
My Hero Academy
V: high school students with super powers and they go to school to learn how to become heroes! easily became one of my favorite shounen anime. every student is precious except that one grape-looking dude
Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan
J: we have another hot-blooded male protagonist over here!!! my boy eren just has a simple dream- to kill all the titans that ever existed because they ruined his life!!! is it really too much to ask for?
One Punch Man
J: this follows the story of saitama, who just wants to be a hero and save people’s lives. he’s bored because, well, he’s overpowered. you’ll get a lot of laughs here, definitely
Tokyo Ghoul (the whole show censored the gore but you can find the uncensored version too)
V: Ghouls basically look like humans but their diet is limited to humans and coffee only (they can’t eat human food). The ghouls need to kill humans to eat but humans want to live so they fight back. It shows the story of both sides so you feel sorry for both of them lol…and so my boy kaneki just wanted to go on a date but his life turned upside down after that.
Noragami
J: we’re dealing with the supernatural this time! my girl hiyori suddenly becomes involved with the gods, which is kind of awesome but also awful. also the gods are so very human in the sense that they cause so much shit. you probably don’t want them ruling your planet or something
Parasyte: Maxim
J: in this world, there’s an organism/parasite that invades your body and takes over it, killing you instantly. sometimes, things don’t go as planned, and the parasite and the human have to coexist, guess what happens to our main character….
Psycho Pass
J: in a dystopian future, there’s a technology that actually predicts your probability of becoming a criminal/endangering humanity. that technology in itself is already the problem….
Moribito
V: set in a fantasy, historical Asia. my girl Balsa can easily beat up 1000 men while guarding a child prince. interesting plot, beautiful animation, and an amazing main character!!
D.Gray Man
J: hey there demons, it’s me, ya exorcist!!! demon-hunting adventures with lots of friendship in between and you’ll fall in love with these character i swear!! a+ humor as well honestly i love these kids
Blue Exorcist
V: hey there demons, it’s me, another exorcist! half-human/half-demon boy goes to school to learn how to become an exorcist to defeat demons and most importantly: Satan
Thriller
Erased (We recommend the live action too! it follows the manga more accurately. It’son Netflix)
J: murder mystery where our MC has this ability to rewind time and fix any bad things that were about to happen. one day, he gets transported back and ends up having to figure out on who murdered one of his classmates. really keeps you on the edge of your seat and the music is spot on!!
Another
J: in a seriously haunted classroom, there’s always one extra person who had died but is present with them, every year it’s someone different and the class has to figure out on who the dead one is before……bad things…
Terror In Resonance
V: two teenage boys commit terrorist attacks on Tokyo and they somehow get a girl involved in their crimes
Movies
Kimi no Na Wa
V: JunHao’s My I was inspired by this!!! I don’t want to spoil too much, you just have to watch it! beautiful animation, beautiful characters. the story makes a lot more sense if you watch it the second time.
Studio Ghibli movies
The Girl who Leapt Through Time

Mun name: Steph (I don’t have a cool nickname XD) OOC Contact: IM’s / Asks etc. I have a Discord and want to use it more so I’ll hand it out if anyone wants it :)
Tumblr media
Who the heck is my muse anyway:
Ayato Kirishima is a Ghoul in the series Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul :re - a creature exact to humans but can only survive on eating human meat [think of it like a make-shift vampire]. He is the younger brother of Touka Kirishima. After the death of his father, the siblings lived on the streets for a little while - making them rough around the edges. After they were taken in by Anteiku [a cafe run by Ghouls] Ayato decided to leave - feeling that being made to live aside humans would weaken him in a world where strength is everything. After defeating many Ghouls in Ward 13 he was invited to join Aogiri Tree - a Ghoul terrorist organization. He quickly climbed the ranks in that group and became Executive. He spent several years there as a teenager, but as an adult he showed signs of wanting to leave. His wish was granted as Aogiri Tree collapsed and he fell into joining another group alongside his sister and fellow ex-Aogiri Tree Executives - Goat. He was a quick-to-anger teenager with a negative view on the world, but grew into a more understanding young man. Even so, he is still prone to violence when the situation calls for it.
Points of interest:
Ayato is a very strong Ghoul. At a very young age (14) he was already considered to be S rank by the CCG. The third most dangerous type of Ghoul. He has then gotten stronger in :re and is now classed as SS rank. He was able to withstand and escape from a fight with Juuzou Suzuya and has taken down many CCG Doves under his sister’s persona of the rabbit to get the target off her back - dubbing him The Black Rabbit. During his time in Aogiri Tree, he often trained others to become stronger.
He is often shown to be verbally abusive towards his fellow Executives - Naki and Miza and subordinates like Hinami. But several omakes have shown they have fairly close relationships - like a family. Since they are like a family, they don’t always get along. But Ayato is quick to defend any of them if they are in danger.
Ayato hides behind this ‘edge-y’ personality to disguise what he really feels. He doesn’t want to seem weak in any regard, and he deems emotions as a weakness. He finds it incredibly difficult to communicate his true feelings for anybody, so often just resorts to cruel comments and swearing. Though some people have seen through it and understand him on a better level [e.g Kaneki].
According to his fact pages he likes tropical fish and rabbits - and is fixated on heights! In another omake, it is shown that Ayato as a teenager was insecure about his height - but his issues washed away when he did become rather tall as an adult.
Ayato from his teenager years and his adult years seem like two different people. If you wish to RP with an angsty, quick-to-fight and aggressive teenager: you can - and if you want a more calm but still very dangerous adult: you can!
What they’ve been up to recently:
Ayato Kirishima is currently facing death. Again. To make sure his new brother-in-law, Kaneki, gets to the source of this poison infecting the city - he is fending off mutations. All the while it is painfully obvious he too is infected by the poison.
Where to find them:
He never really gets a rest! Even though he’s with Goat now (run by the One Eyed King - Kaneki) he never gets to relax really. He is always being sent on errands - so you rarely see him in the underground headquarters where Goat lies. He spent most of his time with Goat exploring an underground city - where he found three child survivors.
Current RP plans:
I love an AU - so I really want to flesh out more of them. I’ve dabbled in some but never been able to really delve into the ideas. I have ideas such as: - Ayato being the same, but he never left Anteiku and so never joined Aogiri Tree. He was there through all of the events of TG and TG:re - He attended school when he had the opportunity to (gotta love a simplified School AU XD) - Being caught by the CCG and used for experimentation for Quinques - as his Ukaku is rather flexible as many other things...and mysteriously integrates wonderfully with the Arata armor...
Desired interactions:
I’d love to see Ayato breaking down his walls more as an adult. It will be trying for the other muse, but he’s a reliable companion once that is done. I’d love to see someone stick by him rather than let him down.
Some relationships too... [All my ships are used in the same way as AUs. So they’re in different worlds to each other]. He seems so hardy and unloveable, but there’s a heart underneath all that steel.
I really want to flesh out the prisoner-plot. Especially with any human/CCG muses. Gives me a chance to show Ayato as a broken man rather than his hard-ass self. I love explorations like that.
Some fashback-like threads would be nice too. Able to explore Ayato’s short time in Anteiku, or even further back when he was on the streets.
A lot more Touka interactions. We get barely any in the manga so I’d really enjoy fleshing out their current relationship as brother and sister after all that’s happened.
Offered interactions:
Fight Me! - basically a young Ayato wanting a scrap. That’s how he makes all his friends... ¬¬
Comfort? - He may not seem like the best person to talk to about issues, but that never stopped Hinami or the other Executives... And he helped them as much as he could.
Can’t Catch Me - mostly for CCG muses, or similar, when they go up against The Black Rabbit
Sailing Ships - If our muses have already shown chemistry - I can offer a soft-rabbit for that muse :3
Current open post/s:
It’s been buried in all my posts... But anything with the tag ‘open rp starter’ or anything similar to that will be available for everyone to reply to. Including OC’s or other fandoms.
Anything else?:
Just want to note that despite appearing to be a nasty piece of work, I firmly believe there is a lot more to Ayato than what is shown. Just from little interactions or the things he does. So please don’t condemn me for ‘OC-ing a canon character’ because I’m still going off of the manga, just using it in a way to explain his actions in a different, more in depths way. Tagging: Whoever fancies spending a good hour or so on this :P Stolen From: @scrcrow tnx bae :P

Best Horror Anime To Watch on Crunchyroll
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
One of the best things about October is how every content provider gets infected with Halloween madness and succumbs to horror-centric programming. Some networks even curate a full 31 days of scary content to prove just how gung ho they are about this spooky holiday. At this point you’ve likely already made a checklist for all of the big horror films that are on the horizon and all of the older classics that you need to catch up on. However, if you’re still starved for even more horror-based content, then look no further than Crunchyroll and their catalogue of frightening anime.
Whether you’re a committed member of the anime streaming service or you’ve never checked out the site before, it’s likely that the service will have something that catches your eye. It can sometimes be rather overwhelming to sift through a whole collection of anime, especially when you have no idea what’s supposed to be good or not, let alone a series that’s actually scary. In order to make your Halloween a little less frightening, we’ve streamlined a list of some of Crunchyroll’s most notable anime series—both in terms of horror shows that go straight for the jugular as well as lighter fare that centers around a supernatural premise—to make the experience as easy as possible for you.
Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories
How Many Episodes: 72
Sub Only
Yamishibai has steadily been trucking along for over six seasons and it’s turned into one of the more traditional horror anime staples in Japan. The series gets its inspiration from classic urban legends and ghost stories from Asian culture and distills them into brief four-minute bursts of horror. A lot of Yamishibai’s charm comes from its creepy atmosphere and short stories, but the anime’s quality wildly fluctuates over the show’s six seasons. Some episodes are more uncomfortable or strange than terrifying, and the show’s low production values may deter some viewers, but it’s a great source to learn about all kinds of creepy new stories.
Kagewani
How Many Episodes: 13
Sub Only
Kagewani looks at a desperate video blogger who attempts to find success by faking the appearance of cryptids and monsters in his videos. Before he knows it, there are real monsters that are loose on the city and a growing epidemic begins to sweep the community. This hapless blogger, Sousuke, attempts to eliminate these creatures, but the mystery he’s put himself in continues to deepen. Kagewani is easy viewing with its short seven-minute episodes and even though the art style leaves plenty to be desired, it features creative monsters designs and a mystery that holds up until the end. Dedicated fans can also check out the show’s sequel series, Kagewani: Shou.
Angels of Death
How Many Episodes: 12
Sub and Dub
Angels of Deathis a boiled down psychological horror title that throws its characters and audience into a high concept premise. A young girl named Rachel wakes up in the basement of an abandoned building and has no idea how she got there. It’s not long until she encounters Zack, a man who’s completely covered in bandages and has a penchant for waving a sickle around. Angels of Death explores the unconventional friendship between these two as they try to figure out where they are and how to get out. The prison that Rachel and Zack find themselves trapped in is full of unusual horror-friendly characters and the series understands how to make this action-packed mystery engrossing rather than draw out the adventure and withhold answers.
GeGeGe no Kitaro (Kitaro of the Graveyard) (2018)
How Many Episodes: 97 (and still running)
Sub Only
GeGeGe no Kitaro is an anime series that’s actually been around since the 1960s, but every decade has featured some fresh attempt at remaking the series. 2018’s rendition of GeGeGe no Kitaro seems to have learned much from its predecessors and feels like the most polished execution of the anime yet. The series focuses on a number of yokai that are determined to keep the world safe from the more dangerous spirits that are out there. Each episode features a “yokai of the week” that must be handled, but a larger serialized story also courses in the background. GeGeGe no Kitaro has a wide cast of weird, enjoyable characters and even though it skews younger, it still manages to surprise. The basic premise behind the series may sound played out, but incredible art design and addictive storytelling help keep this anime on top.
Another
How Many Episodes: 12
Sub Only
Anothertells an unnerving mystery that sees class 3-3 in a middle school turn into a hotbed for supernatural activity after a popular girl passes away in the ’70s. Now in the present, a new transfer student enters class 3-3 and he’s the only one that’s able to see Misaki, the girl who passed away over 20 years ago. Mysteries continue to grow and this transfer student forms an unexpected alliance with the mysterious Misaki to figure out what evil forces have ahold of their school. Another plays up the mystery and suspense angle over pure horror, but it still knows when to turn up the blood and guts when it’s appropriate. Another benefits from a concise 12-episode story and even though the series’ central mystery changes in some major ways in the second half of the season, it’s always engrossing. You truly want to see Kouichi, the transfer student, find some peace and hopefully be able to give Masaki’s soul some rest, too.
Parasyte: The Maxim
How Many Episodes: 24
Sub and Dub
Parasyte: The Maxim hits the ground running and is bonkers from its very first frame. The series revolves around a number of alien parasites that have landed on Earth and start possessing hosts. Shinichi Izumi is a mild-mannered high school student whose life drastically changes when one of these parasites possesses his right hand. This sets Shinichi on a dangerous journey to wipe out the other parasites that have landed on Earth, as well as figure out how to work alongside his new alien host, and if there’s a way to rid himself of this threat. Parasyte: The Maximoperates like a superhero series at times as Shinichi acclimates to the new strength and powers that his parasite gives him. The series also navigates tricky moral territory as Shinichi, who’s now a human-alien hybrid, must fight against the aliens that are now part of his biology (think Tokyo Ghoul, but with aliens instead of vampire demons).
The path that Shinichi finds himself on gives the anime a strong narrative drive, but honestly, this is just a beautiful show to watch in motion. The fluid, bewildering effects that Shinichi’s parasitic hand puts to use are ridiculous and it’s just crazy to watch a boy partner up with an alien version of his hand for an entire series. H.P. Lovecraft would give this madness his full stamp of approval.
Junji Ito Collection
How Many Episodes: 12
Sub and Dub
If Yamishibai is the tame horror anthology that you can watch before going to bed, then Junji Ito Collection is pure nightmare fuel. This is not a series that should be watched with the lights turned off or even with a large amount of shade in the room. The series adapts some of the most disturbing stories from renowned horror manga artist, Junji Ito. Junji Ito Collection packs two sordid stories into each episode and the subject matter ranges from supernatural curses, to deranged killers, to some of the most extreme body horror you’ll ever see in an anime (can David Cronenberg please take on a live-action adaptation of “Honored Ancestors”?). Ito conjures up unbelievable ideas that are truly a rarity for horror and stories like “Greased,” “Long Dreams,” “Slug Girl,” and “Blood-Bubble Bushes” are all behemoths of horror.
Unfortunately, not all of the Ito stories that the anime chooses to adapt are winners, but the series’ unsettling art design still helps the weaker tales carry a strong punch. With any justice a second season of this will soon be announced to terrify anime fans well into 2019.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Erased
How Many Episodes: 12
Sub Only
Erased is a tight psychological thriller that feels like what would happen if David Fincher had written and directed Back to the Future. The anime centers around the pursuit of a child killer who’s been on the loose for decades while someone else has wrongfully taken the blame. This compelling serial killer mystery also throws in supernatural elements with how the central character experiences a phenomenon known as “Revival” that sends him back in time a few minutes to prevent incidents. The 29 year-old suddenly finds himself sent back 19 years and in his 10 year-old self with the opportunity to stop and catch the child murderer before his initial crimes take place. It’s an incredible mix of genres with a villain that’s genuinely scary and phenomenal characters that you want to see survive. Erased is only 12 episodes and not a single one is wasted as this mystery plays out and goes to dark places.
The Promised Neverland
How Many Episodes: 12
Sub Only
The Promised Neverland is the kind of anime that M. Night Shyamalan would absolutely fall in love with. It’s a masterstroke of storytelling and it builds tension in amazing ways as it keeps the characters and the audience in the dark about so much. It makes all of the series’ payoffs become absolutely incredible. The anime is set in a dystopic vision of 2045 within an orphanage where an 11 year-old named Emma and dozens of other young children are given a cushy existence at the cost of never leaving the grounds and venturing to the outside world. Emma and company soon learn of the horrific truth of the world and the real reason that they’re being kept at this orphanage. It’s truly chilling and The Promised Neverland tells a gripping story where these children have no one to trust and are in way over their heads. A second season of The Promised Neverland is set to hit in 2021, so it’s the perfect time to jump into this series.
Death Note
How Many Episodes: 37
Sub and Dub
Death Note is a series that’s turned into a colossal hit and even though various live-action versions of it exist, there are none that compare to what the anime accomplishes. Death Note succeeds in taking something as outlandish as a magical killing notebook and an apple loving devil shinigami and tie it with a hard-boiled cat and mouse crime saga. Light Yagami’s plummet into darkness and L’s pursuit to apprehend him and keep the blast radius from increasing is really great stuff. It digs into the inherently scary nature of what misdirected rage can make people do. It’s such a different take on a serial killer and the anime remains unpredictable until the end, even though it takes a major turn after the halfway point that isn’t for everyone.
Other horror-centric or monster-based anime titles to check out on Crunchyroll when you’ve scared yourself stiff off of everything else: Jin Roh, The Laughing Salesman NEW, The Garden of Sinners, Interviews With Monster Girls, and Attack on Titan

FEATURE: How Anime Coffee Makes Us Feel So Cozy
Tumblr media
   Is the Order a Rabbit?
Sometimes all you need after a long hard day is a cup of coffee. But maybe coffee alone isn’t enough for you. No, sometimes you need that added touch of sophistication — something special, something cozy. Something especially cozy. On this year’s international coffee day, let’s reflect on a handful of anime series that take their coffee especially serious. And dare we might even say, care enough about it to put a luxurious coffee break above all else. It's the little things.
  Coffee, Coziness, and ... Cannibalism?
Fans of Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul are no strangers to the magnificent power of coffee. For such a simple drink, it packs a powerful punch for protagonist Ken Kaneki. In this world, violent supernatural entities called “ghouls” have an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Once you become a ghoul, you are no longer able to consume normal food without becoming nauseous and ill. After becoming a half-ghoul after being attacked and undergoing an organ transplant from the assailing ghoul, Kaneki’s world is turned upside down. If he can’t sit down for a meal with friends anymore, then what are the chances of ever returning to the status quo?
Tumblr media
Kaneki drinks his first cup of Anteiku coffee (Source: Funimation)
Well, there’s one human thing Kaneki can still consume: coffee. Not just regular coffee though — the specially brewed coffee of Anteiku, a coffee shop front for a secret organization of ghouls living among men. Anteiku’s homebrew isn’t just suited for ghoul taste buds but serves a psychological purpose, as well. After a dietary nervous breakdown, Kaneki simply isn’t able to come to terms with his new reality. Food is social, and as Kaneki quickly learns, ghouls must learn to cope with everyday social interactions where it’s involved to fit in. For as “bitter” as coffee might seem to everyone else, it is especially sweet to Kaneki if just for the sake of clinging to his last remnant of normalcy.
Tumblr media
Kaneki reflected in a coffee pot practicing pour-over technique with Yoshimura (Source: Funimation)
Of course, it isn’t all about drinking coffee either. The sophisticated and cozy vibe of Anteiku, meticulously managed by important side characters, serves as a background to the gruesome violence of their double-lives. Coffee isn’t merely for Anteiku’s true purpose as a ghoul hotspot. It’s a much-needed buffer from the chaos and fast-paced action of supernatural battles all tied-up in Tokyo Ghoul’s dark, and often disturbing themes. If we (and Kaneki) end up associating coffee with any sort of comfort, it’s in stark contrast to the harrowing realities of life abruptly changing all too fast.
  Coziness as an Art Form
Tumblr media
Latte art from Is the Order a Rabbit?
Is the Order a Rabbit follows high school student Cocoa Hoto studying abroad, who has been assigned to live and work at a coffee shop called "Rabbit House." To her dismay, Rabbit House isn't a cute gimmick cafe with bunnies everywhere, but rather a fully functional coffeehouse with ... an eccentric waitstaff. Unassuming Cocoa quickly learns the ropes and soon enough she's practicing latte art with the owner's granddaughter Chino and firearm aficionado Lize. At first, it seems like Rabbit House's coffee is serious business. Compared to Chino and Lize's near-encyclopedic knowledge of coffee beans, Cocoa fails to recognize a single blend after being tested. So, how in the world can a coffeehouse hopeful prove herself?
Make adorable latte art! Duh.
Tumblr media
Chiya's Ukiyo-e latte art from Is the Order a Rabbit?
Rabbit House isn't cozy by default due to it's a slice-of-life status. Here, coffee is a social activity, not a snobby status quo symbol. On her first day, Cocoa is thinking outside the box and the three girls make latte art depicting their interests — army tanks, cute fluffballs, and naturally, a Pablo Picasso imitation. Who knew latteral thinking could make such a good impression? In another episode, the girls visit former-competitor Ama Usa An, where Hokusai-inspired Ukiyo-e latte art is used as a punchline. There's no real purpose to latte art other than improving to the atmosphere. So, is coziness for coziness' sake okay? Absolutely. Because you don't need to be a snob to enjoy coffee's charm.
Unlike the intensity of series like Tokyo Ghoul, the girls of Rabbit House and friends don't have many reasons to be super stressed. Although it may seem like the cutesy cafe and coffee are setpieces, together they serve the vital purpose of bringing different people together. You don't need to take a break from saving the world or fighting monsters to warrant a chill coffee break. Sometimes, all you really need is a way to get to know friends and savor the finer niceties of life.
  The No Chill Zone
Tumblr media

The recently aired slice of life series Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out! has drawn attention for plenty of reasons, albeit probably not for its take on the supposedly chill vibes of a cafe. College student Shinichi Sakurai is persistently hounded by his underclassman Hana Uzaki, who really, really, really wants to hang out. Whenever he’s on campus, there’s no doubt Uzaki is just around the corner. There’s only one place Sakurai has as a sanctuary — a quaint and fancy coffee shop. Like Tokyo Ghoul’s Kaneki, Sakurai takes up a part-time job there serving the dual purpose as an outlet for life’s daily stresses. Except ... one day Uzaki finds out where he works and it all goes to hell.

The thing about coffee is that someone has to make it. Maybe even serve it to you. Sakurai asks Uzaki to act as a customer, not his friend — which only causes a strange scenario to become even stranger. Unlike the relatively cozy atmosphere of Anteiku, this coffeeshop is a hotbed for situational comedy and gags. Sure, maybe you’ve come across your friends working their side gig before, but to persistently badger them while they’re under the watchful eye of their boss (hilariously nicknamed “The Master” in Uzaki) is a whole new, definitely anti-cozy environment. Like plenty of series reliant on gags, our expectations are inverted for laughs because we’ve simply come to associate them with norms. Coffee is ... normally cozy, right? Of course, it’s all the funnier if your chic coffee shop suddenly becomes a battleground for endless social faux pas. If your main character wants nothing else but to be alone, well, then there’s practically no place better to exploit a trope we all know and love. If coffee is “cozy” then it might just simply be for all the social niceties we attach to it.
  The Convenience of Togetherness
Narratively, coffee serves as a great excuse to sit down and do nothing. For example, series like K-ON! and Tower of God couldn’t be any more different save for their cast’s shared love of coffee, tea, and sweets. Similarly, cultures across the world have their own approach to coffee shops and what they represent. In Japan, traditional teahouses called “kissaten” can serve as a more intimate venue to drink coffee with friends and often draw upon their own unique local culture. In other parts of the world, the small, tight-knit culture around “coffeehouses” and salons are still alive and well. Depending on where you live, such places might be incredibly easy to find or might have to be deliberately sought after, hidden behind an innocuous door or hallway. When we see a group of characters huddled over their coffee cups recollecting the events of today’s episode or major plot twist, we can (usually) breathe a sigh of relief.

If these places and their coffee need to be cozy, it’s by extension of them being out of harm’s way. And like series such as Tokyo Ghoul have shown us, there’s no better distance between you and danger than a cup of Anteiku coffee. Coffee in anime joins the pantheon of that well-beloved trope of “delicious-looking anime food." But thematically, it’s obviously more than that. In the original Japanese dub of Kiki’s Delivery Service, Kiki is offered a cup of coffee by Osono after first arriving in town. In the first American dub, she’s offered hot chocolate instead, a change that sadly skims over the fact that coffee is often recognized as a “grown-up” drink (or at least, something you wouldn’t normally give young children). With her first cup of coffee, Kiki is symbolically taking the first steps toward her new young adult life — a rite of passage. Not unlike Kaneki taking his first sip of ghoul-proof coffee, this gesture is imbued with powerful emotions and coming change.
So, if you have the time, give yourself the gift of a cup of coffee today. There’s never harm in a little peace of mind.
