started watching tonhon chonlatee because it was voted worst gmmtv bl show, and i had to know whether that was true.
two episodes in, i am in LOVE. i adore this show with all my heart. this is the funniest thing i've ever seen, i keep laughing so hard it's making me cry. if they keep this energy up, this might become one of my favorite shows of all time. i truly do not understand how this was voted worst bl

ok but why was no one going to tell me that Tonhon Chonlatee is actually kinda silly ??
Tumblr media
i just finished binge watching it for the first time (needed something soft to deter from ofts and everything else going on lol) and like- does it have it’s cringe moments ? yeah sure, but it also makes it strangely endearing ??
i think it has a lot to do with the friendgroup and how everyone is just trying to help each other out and figure out their feelings.,
everyone is also kinda equally weird which makes it fun to watch too since it makes you forget how absurd it all is bc it’s somehow all normal for it to be happening
Tumblr media
i mean look at them! they are a family 😭 (pretend that na and ken are there too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they were also so enjoyable to watch scheme for basically 10 episodes in a row to try and get Ton to realize how he felt about Chon
idk- all in all, watching intense gay judgement from secret couple Nai and Ai (and eventually Miriam too lmao) toward unknowingly gay and homophobic Ton was simply the highlight of my weekend :]
Tumblr media
things don’t always have to be brilliant, sometimes they can just be fun ⭐️

Rewatching Tonhon Chonlatee and there are 2 parts that, to me, will never not be funny:
-Chon putting on 7 additional pairs of pants to hide a boner.
-Na poking his eye with his sunglasses and screaming about it.

because we can always have more of Ai and Nai reacting to Ton's Ton-ness
These were not collected for this post. I had all of these already from my watch through, this show is unbeatable for one liners and Ai and Ni expressions are an absolute highlight.
Honestly this show reminds me of To Sir With Love with the dramatics...maybe it's a lakorn? Or maybe it was Thailands ?first attempt at mixing these genres?

Hi
I'm pretty sure you're on holidays right now (or away for some reason) and I hope you're having a good time :)
I just wanted to say THANKYOUUUUUUUUU!!!
I watched Tonhon Chonlatee because of you and it was PHENOMINAL
So much laughter
so much chaos
so much obliviousness
so much heart
so much Foreshadowing and Symbolism!!
AND THE QUEER FRIENDSHIP GROUP
Tumblr media
I LOVED IT SO MUCH
Thankyou.
@rocketturtle4, you are correct, and I am traveling. I've only watched Stay by My Side in the past five days and was excited to watch the last Club Friday episode today, but it doesn't have captions (I don't know if it's just because where I am), so your ask brings me great joy during these dark times (yes, I'm referring to the episode not having captions).
I'm so glad you watched Tonhon Chonlatee because it is the epitome of a Hot Mess Express, but hopefully it wasn't me that convinced you, but instead the person who made the video the Anon referred to in their ask.
youtube
That video was great, and I agree with everything in it, especially the friends portions. The love story is problematic, but the friends group is where the show truly excels. Each person was great, and even though Ton was supposed to be the ultimate catch, the friends group proved that they were the greatest prize.
Tumblr media
I can't pick a favorite because they are all amazing and hilarious:
Na brought the loving cringe.
Tumblr media
Miriam was over the top at all times.
Tumblr media
Nhai and Ai's face game was on point.
Tumblr media
And Pang was always supportive.
Tumblr media
Tonhon Chonlatee and Ai Long Nhai have the same characters played by different actors, and even though both were fluffy and messy, the friend group in both were excellent.
Tumblr media
Possibly because all the friends are equal. No one is better than anyone else. They all operate on the same level of ridiculousness, and they are all fun to watch.
But if you ask Nhai, he is the prettiest.

10 Favorite Moments of Snark in BL
This one came is as an ask from the lovely @solitaryandwandering and there are tons of options so I just picked some of mine and labeled them top 10. I reserve the right to change my mind if a remember better.
Quite a few of these came from truly terrible BLs, I wonder if that has to do with me remembering them. Like they stood out as moments of delightful charm in a sea of sewage?
1. Just talk!
Ae getting annoyed with TinCan in A Chance At Love.
Tumblr media
Of course it’s MAME first, but the idea of her using one of her most popular characters (whom she fucked over) to criticize miscommunication as a narrative driver (which is her fucking calling card) was just the ironic poop version of a chef’s kiss. (Sorry, I don’t know how else to put it.)
2. Saucing out of jealousy
Let’s just get MAME out of the way, shall we? Type (in TharnType) is an absolute banger at the pithy quip in a very agro way and I love a lot of his lines. I mean calling your lover “crybaby” when you finally tell him you love him? Epic snark. Also the “you can finally stop complaining about us” to Techno is so good.
Tumblr media
But my personal favorite, hands sown, is the throwing a sauce bottle. Talk about product placement. (Although said senior’s snarky, “It’s fun to see a big baby agitated” about Type, was also pretty darn great.)
3. I’m so gay
In Rainbow Prince, the fact that Art’s focused pursuit is patently obvious and his subordinates are still careful about it was just really funny to me. It reminded me of my youth when friends got surprised when I came out. Don’t get me wrong, my coming out was perfectly serviceable at the time, but also the ones who were surprised I was like...
Tumblr media
4. Ate the phonebook
Bright in SOTUS (played by Off) is a wonderfully snarky character. I love the way he is self deprecating about being a bad student, even in front of his juniors, and the time he leads them in prayer? So funny.
Tumblr media
But my favorite is his one shot “Did he eat the national register” when Kong is showing off his memory for names in one of the hazing sequences.
Shout out to the one I do have a screen cap of, this from SOTUS S:
Tumblr media
Like serious moment of scripted brilliance.
Ah me, back in the days when most Thai BLs had really good scripts....
5. Goodnight, you fucker
Kao’s fandi-way in the Kiss series.
Tumblr media
This is a linguistic one. It’s just I already had grocked the notion of fandi na as being a cute thing couples use with each other (kind of like “sweet dreams, please?”) to see Kao make this super rude when Pete is begging him for it, is so much THEM, their dynamic, it’s particularly snarky and on character.
Also, you know me, i had to pick a linguistic one.
6. Rome getting his own back
Rome in Puppy Honey is such a sweet soft character but also so much owning his own identity, and so steady about it. It was just really fun to see him get one up on Pick.
Tumblr media
Even if they both know it’s actually a compliment.
Also should out to Porsche’s moment of quip, “I enjoy this scene a little too much” when he catches his bestie rolling around in paint with cute boy.
7. Invitation?
Tumblr media
Tian actually has quite a few moments of snark in Tale of a Thousand Stars. (”You know how to sweet talk now?’). But honestly this is a phrase I use constantly IRL so I was just happy to see it show up in a Thai BL.
8. Just alpha bitch bitching it up
Look is this level of confrontation actually considered snark? I don’t know but Miriam’s defense of Chon in Tonhon Chonlatee is epic. Top level. It’s a real pleasure to watch a female bestie take out an evil femme fatale machine-gun style.
Tumblr media
Yes there are others, the bffs (best female friends) in Together With Me and Dark Blue Kiss spring to mind.
9. Calling out the industry moments
There are quite a few of these, and a BL that is already bad and full of tropes has to be careful because they are reviewing themselves badly. And yet they do it anyway. This example comes from one of this year’s worst, My Secret Love:
Tumblr media
Our Days has
“Can I love you, my tsundere”
“This year so many Y series came out”
“I think the script writers are at fault”
“Your acting skills suck”
all of which come off as more rich and inappropriate than snark in such a terrible show.
It’s not always bad show tho.
Cherry Blossoms After Winter scene card calling out the “only one bed” trope.
And in on of the Taiwanese BLs there is a moment where a side character tells on of the leads that “tsundere is so out of fashion” but I can’t remember which show.
10. Seme subscription service
Best of the best (IMHO) comes from Korea, who generally specializes in earnest, not snark. But...
Semantic Error is one of my favorite BL’s because the two leads are nearly entirely comprised of snark. SangWoo’s “if my heart wasn’t beating I’d be dead” was perfection, since it also takes a common trope to account.
And when JaeYoung is grouchy and says "No lettuce, eat perilla leaves instead” I bark laughed. Also the “oops my hand slipped” after he shot that dart at the drunk asshole in the pub. Both of these also involve physical comedy moments, so they aren’t strictly just snark they're visual gags but still? *kiss kiss kiss*
But I had to pick seme subscription service as my favorite moment of snark from this series. Because it is both of them, snipping back and forth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s it. That’s my top 10.
Other good ones?
KinnPorsche Pete has a few the time at the table with the minor family and the time in chains when he’s reading a book.
Most of Team’s responses to Win in Until We Meet Again. from “You’re so picky” to “Don’t even think about it.”
Half of what Pond says in Love By Chance.
All of what Pure says in My Gear and Your Gown.
I don’t love Theory of Love but Third’s internal dialogue (when he’s not whining and pining) and his occasionally take downs are pretty darn great.
Adachi’s internal reactions to Kurosawa’s thoughts in Cherry Magic, especially after they are dating. “Everything is so mushy.”
Akoi’s internal dialogue and self criticism snark in My Love Mix Up.
TangYi’s “too soft” in H3: Trapped.
Noh’s “Fine, yes” at the end of Love Sick. Not a snarky character in general, just a wise and sweet one, but at the end, yes, snark.
NamGoong in Light On Me, the sweetest side character of snark.
Pretty much all of Mob’s thoughts and dialogue in Absolute BL.
Tumblr media
This post dated mid 2022, not responsible for snark that came after.

Hi again!
I have a question about Only Friends but I want to provide some context,
I’ve been playing historical catchup with my choices for what to watch next in BL while also keeping up with airing shows and I had planned to watch Only Friends without specific additional context of the director or actor couples (ships? Branded pairs? Whats the best way to say this…not the point). But honestly the hype for this one and the many posts about specific actors and Jojo have got me wondering (everyday for like 2 weeks) if that’s the wrong choice. (I have for the record read the posts about this show, why people are excited, why Jojo is so great, most specifically by absolutebl and respectthepetty but others too)
For context of the actors I have seen: A boss and a babe
For Jojo I’ve seen: 3 Will Be Free.
The shows I see most often mentioned around Only Friends are:
Jojo: The Warp Effect & Never Let Me Go
Actors: The Eclipse (Plus Tonhon Chonlatee before this)
I know Enchante was also ForceBook but it doesn’t really get mentioned, and I’ve no idea about actor couple 3 (are they a branded pair?) – one of them is in everything (Mark?)
All of these are shows are on my watchlist, but given their recentness (as in post 2020 release) they’re not coming up soon.
As the whole point of my historical catch up is to watch shows with background understanding and context my question is:
How much do you think watching these shows (or some other ones I don’t know about) before watching Only Friends, is important for getting the fullest experience out of watching Only Friends?
So, despite giving an entire syllabus for familiarization with the arc of queer cinema as I experienced it heading into BL, I actually don't think people should do homework to watch a series that isn't a sequel.
I've been told I should finally watch Mama Gogo in preparation for Only Friends. I've seen Friendzone and Friendzone 2: Dangerous Area, as well as The Warp Effect, 3 Will Be Free, Never Let Me Go, and Gay OK Bangkok. I don't think you really need to watch more if it doesn't immediately grab you as preparation.
You can get a sense of Khaotung, First, and Mark in Moonlight Chicken. Khaotung and First are good together in The Eclipse, and are clearly comfortable with high heat based on their Our Skyy 2 offerings.
Neo has been in a lot, but the excitement about Neo and Mark together has to do with some of the things we've picked up in Mark's history and what he's told us, and a few cast stories from the lead up to filming.
Just sit back and enjoy the ride. There's a ton of BL that is good or intriguing that you can work your way back through. Follow your bliss.

Hii. Fellow Pining boys lover here! Could you recommend some BL series with unrequited love and long term pining? Thank you so much, lovely.
Unrequited love I can't help much with, honestly, there's not a ton of it in BL? But there are a few. But pining, oh pining, my favorite babies. I will only be recommending ones I love.
I mean, the first is the obvious of MekBoss from My Engineer. One of my personal favorite pining dynamics of all time because I adore piners who pick friendship over love every time until there isn't a choice anymore. But yes. Definitely good pining.
2moons2 is good for a speedrun of pining alongside some very flirty pining and it works very, very well for both, though I suppose arguments could be made about whether or not actively flirting with someone can also be pining but, you know what, I'll make an exception.
Cherry Magic does Kurosawa's pining oh so well and it's darling. Different than Thai pining but definitely one to watching.
Lovely Writer has both pining and unrequited love by the end. Honestly, I have to recommend this one strongly because the pining is delicious, the relationship is great and the unrequited love is painful in a whole rang of ways and goes in so many directions.
About Youth just ended but I cannot help how much I recommend it for the gentleness and pining. Not the plot so much but there is very gentle pining and love and softness.
Bad Buddy is A+ in terms of how much pining truly hurts and how much it can change a person when they know they can't do anything about it and how much that love can change them too. Absolutely A+.
Cherry Blossoms After Winter is truly all about pining that turns to love without distraction. I also love it so much, it's truly traditional yaoi in every sense but done by Korea so it's super stylized.
Cutie Pie is the only show where it is entirely about pining despite them already being in a relationship. Absolutely must watch for pining fans, honestly, both main pairs are established relationship that are still pining for each other because they're in arranged marriages.
En of Love TOSSARA is more like the conclusion of a long pining arc we don't see but it absolutely has to be here because it is glorious.
My Beautiful Man is dual sided pining with agony mixed in and is my purest 11/10 BL so, yes, you should definitely watch this one.
La Cuisine is close to this so Imma stick on here because I have a super soft spot for this little pulp. Very soft, very filled with lots of gentle and soft loving that starts as pining and pining that has lasted a long time.
Minato Shouji Coin Laundry is definitely perfect for this, honestly. They do everything. You gotta watch it for
My one mediocre recommendation: My Gear and Your Gown. This one is longterm pining but it's done super mediocre and they flubbed the ending but ugh SO MUCH POTENTIAL. Enchante also falls here but the ending was even worse for me so I can't recommend that one at all.
Old Fashion Cupcake is the mature version of this, in a lot of ways, but also just an amazing show and you should definitely watch it regardless.
Plus & Minus had good pining but, again, kind of fell apart at the end. But the pining was very, very good.
Secret Crush on You is a cringefest of the deepest emotions that somehow blended longterm pining and stalking into a gorgeous love story that is also... cringe humor but with an amazing message? I love SCOY so much and I think you will too, just remember that they're taking the comedic side characters and giving them depth and heart so that's exactly what it is.
Star in My Mind is very good at the idea of longterm pining on both sides but also deep, deep communication struggles so... watch out for that? I liked it a lot but I know it went too long for a lot of people.
Tonhon Chonlatee is another comedy that I honestly really enjoyed and it's all longterm pining and an oblivious idiot and also Neo Trai in one of his best roles before The Eclipse!
We Best Love No 1 For You is exactly what anyone looking for longterm pining is looking for, honestly, it's fantastic. Fighting Mr Second is... not exactly the same thing but does have a lot of good notes and has a different longterm pining couple that is also a touch more unrequited so this might just be perfect for you?
You're My Sky also has longterm pining in the main couple and is gorgeous.
Anyway, yes there are others but most of the others are ones I wouldn't recommend because I didn't like them. So... enjoy these!

Not to be that bitch with my fledgling Thai but, to offer a counter to the slightly patronising ask about how the Thai titles are different:
TharnType in Thai: adapted from the novel named "TharnType Story เกลียดนักมาเป็นที่รักกันซะดีๆ", which is also what's on the poster and promo material, translates literally to TharnType Story: Hate very much becomes love better - the translated version is Hate you, love you more, which is pretty accurate. But the native title is still TharnType.
Tonhon Chonlatee in Thai: ต้นหนชลธี. ต้น-Ton หน-hon ช-Ch(on) ลธี-latee.
KinnPorsche in Thai: complicated because of The Backstory, all of the posters and promo is in English, no Thai characters, but the native title is listed as คินน์พอร์ช เดอะซีรีส์ …. which is KinnPorsche The Series.
I'm hunting for others.
Venus in the Sky? I'm not sure that counts but it is the character names. Native title ห้ามฟ้าห่มดาว - stop/ban sky wearing stars. I'm… not sure that makes more sense, but sure.
Ai Long Nhai - again, not sure this counts, but they're called Ai and Nhai. Native title is อัยย์หลงไน๋, Ai [is infatuated with] Nhai.
Rak Diao - รักเดียว. Rak Diao. Love Stars. But that's because their names translate to Love and Star/Stars. So.
In general, yeah, Thai titles are different, but in the couple-naming-convention? Largely seems faithful to the Thai. I'm not here to say any of them are especially good or bad, I'm just being an arse :) <3
Well, that's interesting! They generally seem to follow the same pattern in the original Thai while also including some sort of addition 🤔
RE: KinnPorsche, I remember reading that the Thai title has a different translation somewhere but it's been so long since then I would never be able to find where I read it again. Maybe somebody else has a clue?!
I do want to add, though, that not all the titles with the couple's name in them are bad (KP and Rak Diao from the list you mentioned imo); I've watched BL with complicated Thai titles that were much worse than almost all of the ones mentioned here; and finally, there are also a lot of show with just one of the characters' names in the title which seem to have a very high incidence of not being very good 😬
I think this needs more research 🧐

Funny story … I was watching Tonhon Chonlatee, and during some of their intimate scenes where my gaze was not entirely focused, my brain would legit morph Ton’s face into First’s because apparently my brain has too much Firstkhao brain rot to comprehend Khaotung’s character not being with First
So my brain really said: “this…isn’t…First?? 🤨🤨 Why is Khaotung with someone who isn’t first?? 🧐🧐 Here lemme fix that for you…Ahhh much better 😌 yes that looks right 😌”
