Ok. I'm pointing out you did not answer my question. So I'll help you:

BTVS and AtS as shows are not particularly subtle even in their implications. A couple examples: in Lie to Me (s02 ep07), Buffy talks about how Ford's rejection of her meant she cried in her room listening to the song "I Touch Myself", and then quickly covers up that she didn't know what the song was about.

Everyone's moved on and then Willow realizes what the song is about without saying what it's about - that's basically how the show handles implication. Another example is in Beauty and the Beasts (s03e04), it's heavily implied that Debbie is in an abusive relationship with Pete. Her dialogue with Oz uses the language of an abused woman, as it does with Willow and Buffy when they confront her, and as so when Pete verbally berates Debbie and scares her, and she ends up comforting Pete while he still blames her for his outburst. They use Pete turning into a *literal* monster to supernaturalify the realities of abusive relationships for teens, and we only see Pete hit and eventually kill Debbie when he's in his monster form. This is how the show, especially when Buffy herself is still a teen, handles mature themes. Or silly one-liners like in Amends, when Joyce says "Angel's on top again?" the implication here is clear.

That being said, back to Lie to Me. In this episode, it's the first time we hear Angel's description of his torment of Drusilla. He very specifically says, he made her a vampire, but first he made her insane. Killed everybody she loved, visited every mental torture on her he could devise. And the day she took her holy orders, he turned her into a demon. He describes Drusilla as pure and sweet and chaste (and I think it's this word that's tripping you dingbats up), but that's not at all an implication of rape. Because a show like BTVS would be *a lot clearer* about that implication. Especially considering the context (uh oh a bad word) in which this confession about Dru takes place. It's called Lie to Me, and Angel had lied to Buffy earlier about staying at home when she'd seen him with Drusilla. Buffy is struggling to figure out who to trust and this moment is meant to be bring her and Angel closer - it's the first time she admits to loving him - by his being honest with her. Now does it make sense that if Angel is saying he raped Dru that Buffy would feel she could trust him? Let's use our brains.

Like this is literally the point of the episode.

Let's get back to the chaste thing. It's followed up in AtS when Darla brings Drusilla to Angel's attention, that she knows he likes them pure, because what sets Angel apart from other vampires is the psychological torture. When Angel singles out the maid in Amends (s03e10), he uses the language of rape to scare the maid into compliance. He hasn't revealed he's a vampire to her yet, and all she knows is that he's a nobleman looking to take advantage. In this context, that is psychological torture. How many times has she or maids like her, in this time, experienced something like this? And with her mistress distracted she's vulnerable. She knows that, he says it. And only when she realizes it's futile does she give in. Only after he sees that moment of acquiescing does he reveal he's a vampire. Then she tries to use her son. Angel says he'd make a fine dessert, then he bites and kills her. Buffy sees this. He kills this woman. He doesn't rape her. A business man as the First describes how Angel killed his children and then set their bodies up to make him think they were just asleep, to add to his trauma when Angel came to kill him (he also did this with Jenny in season 2). Because it's the psychological aspect he's after. When that same maid comes back as the First, shortly after that scene, she describes Angel as "different than other beasts. They kill to feed, but you took more kinds of pleasure in it than any creature that walks or crawls." Then his friend appears, and Angel killed him the week before the wedding, because of course he would. But the *implication* you love so much is he kills people and takes great pleasure in doing so. That's got nothing to do with rape.

Now let's take the description of him as his human self - Liam. The First describes him as a "drunken, whoring layabout and a terrible disappointment to your parents". This is later expanded in AtS, but the implication here is OBVIOUS. He was a drunk, and he did a lot of whoring and was feckless/jobless/directionless. Do you know what whoring means? In that time? It meant paying prostitutes for sex. Going to pleasure dens. He paid for sex with, to our knowledge, adult women who received payment for services rendered. That's...not rape. In AtS Darla finds him fighting and flirting in a tavern and loves it. He's not raping anyone, and the maid describes him as a man who basically whispers sweet nothings in your ear, you guys have sex and then he forgets all about you. Consensual sex. The idea here, is similar to when Buffy sleeps with Parker in s04. He says all the right things, she consents to sex, and then that's where he ends the relationship. So, if that makes Liam a rapist, did Parker also rape Buffy?

In AtS, part of what Angel likes about Dru is that she'll see him killing her coming. He'll have to use care in how he tortures her. So he tortures her by killing everyone around her. Which is what he said to Buffy.

We see what Angel described in BTVS. Drusilla is made insane, sitting around a pile of bodies, in the convent, while Angel and Drusilla gorge on blood. When they're done with that, they literally have sex - together, not with Dru - right in front of her. Dru was violated, yes. Mentally. But Darla and Angel having consensual sex on and/or near Dru is not raping her.

When he gets cursed, they describe the daughter of their tribe as special and innocent and that's Angel's type. He killed her because of those things. Because it's the psychology of it all. We spend the latter quarter of season 2 BTVS seeing what kind of monster Angelus is. He tortures Buffy by killing her classmates, attacking and threatening her friends, sending her roses and leaving pictures of her mom in her bedroom - to mess her up psychologically. He has a VERY clear MO and rape isn't part of that. Again, a show like BTVS would be explicit about that, but they weren't, because that's not a part of Angelus' characterization.

But, okay, so let's say, in some world Angel was a rapist. He gets cursed with his soul and feels remorse. He is banished by Darla and then is called to show his remorse and to actively repent by being a force of good. It's literally his whole thing. He's a Champion and he talks about the burden of the guilt. Spike though? Spike never feels bad for the Buffybot, never feels bad about attacking Buffy, shows zero remorse for what he did to Robin. For godsake he is STILL WEARING ROBIN'S MOTHER'S COAT AFTER HE GETS A SOUL. Spike does not repent, he does not become a Champion working to right his wrongs. He is forgiven without ever asking for or earning forgiveness, and we watched him be a monster in real time without AND WITH a soul. So miss me with this deranged shit honestly. Y'all stay making shit up. Like that anon said. Just say you like Spike and don't care he actually on screen and with ZERO implication, just straight facts, tried to rape Buffy and keep it pushing. Stop trying to equalize him and Angel in a pathetic attempt to take bangel fans down a peg with misinformation and flat out lies.

Hello there, gentle viewers! Welcome back to Buffy Slays, where I’ll be going through all 144 episodes of BtVS over the course of a year, highlighting as many of the GOOD moments, lines, character choices, worldbuilding moments, etc. etc. as I think people will have the patience to read.

So, here we go!

Season 2, Episode 8, “The Dark Age.”

Giles' past comes back to haunt him when a demon he and Ethan Rayne summoned in their wild days comes looking for them in Sunnydale. (Pulled from Hulu.)

How “The Dark Age” Slays:

Jenny and Giles, in one of their last really amazing scenes together. Not the VERY last, but really, after this episode there will just be one thing after another keeping them apart until her murder. But this scene near the beginning is one of their best. Because she calls him “England” and “a sexy fuddy-duddy.” Because he gets so flustered talking to her, but clearly adores her. Because she teases him about staining and dog-earing a beloved book of his, and grinning as she hands it to him completely fine. Because they lean in for a kiss, and the bell rings… and the common trope is to have the couple pull away at the first sign of interruption, but nope, these two go for it anyway, letting bells ring and students flock as they have their kiss in the classroom doorway. Which is just satisfying to see, whether you ship this couple or not.

Cordelia and Xander both loudly complain about having to go to school on Saturday, they cling to each other when Eyghon attacks, and when Willow yells at them for bickering with each other, they both meekly and immediately apologize and promise to be good. They’re two episodes away from passionately making out in Buffy’s basement, and I love these last-minute signals that they’re drawn to each other!

Giles has a tattoo, which, in an episode where the Scoobies say his diapers must have been tweed, is such a great bit of character lore about him. Because even if he’s shaken about the Eyghon demon resurfacing, he’s had to stare at that reminder of it every day for twenty-five years. We’ll see it again in only two other episodes, and it’s not brought up ever again, but I love that it’s there, that even though Ethan and Buffy lose their Eyghon tattoos in this episode, Giles still holds on to his.

Xander makes reference to his Uncle Rory the taxidermist in this episode. Uncle Rory will pop up in random Xander anecdotes throughout the next several seasons, and it just delights me that when the episode arrives to show Uncle Rory in a supporting role, all the bits of info we’ve learned about him will be there, starting with this one!

Third episode this season where Willow loses it at the people she’s working with, since she’s had to take charge when Buffy’s not around. It’s amazing to see that she is consistently the one to do so, to make the plan when the Slayer isn’t here, no matter what other adults are around. She takes over, and God help anyone who doesn't fall in line when she does.

Willow also thinks of Angel to take on the Eyghon demon and beat it�� and he agrees to it. We don’t see the scene where he asks, but Buffy wasn’t even the one in danger; Angel did it to save Miss Calendar, someone he hasn’t even met on screen before now. Because Willow asked, heheheee…

When Eyghon infects Jenny, I think it’s not supposed to be obvious that’s what happened at first. But it was completely clear to me. Because even though she still talks in her Jenny Calendar way, she’s simpering and weak, leaning on Giles, claiming she’s not ready to be home alone, and just… so different from the cool and snarky woman we’ve seen of her so far. Even at the end, after she’s saved and she tells Giles he needs to give her space, she looks ashamed to be asking for it, and I think she’s aloof not because she’s scared and traumatized, but because she doesn’t want him to see her scared and traumatized. We know she comes from a very prideful lineage, and I’m not saying that in a bad way, at least not in this case. I just think she’s used to being tough and invincible, and she’s embarrassed for Giles to know that she isn’t.

Cordelia definitely doesn't always love being a Scooby, but I think she has a good time in this one! She waltzes into the library to see Giles being interviewed by the police, and immediately brings up the parking ticket she wants to be cleared… and then doesn’t think to mention the incident to anyone later. She kicks Ethan when Buffy yells not to let him get away, and boasts of the fact later. She asks why Ethan called Giles “Ripper,” and then when Giles grabs Ethan by the scruff of his neck, says “oh,” like all her questions were answered, just like that! And when Buffy is doling out orders, she smiles all bright and eager at Buffy as she waits for her task, saying that she cares about Giles and wants to help, too.

Buffy’s workout music, that she’s not shy about listening to and working out to, and lets Giles complain about it as much as he wants… which he does, loudly, and without hesitation. I love their dynamic so much. Buffy later offers to get back to training to take his mind off Jenny, and lets him rag on her music to feel better.

Buffy is violated… quite a lot in this show, and, well, I’m sure I’ll have a segment on that at some point. But I think for this violation in particular, it’s important to point out how amazingly she takes it. Ethan knocks her out, ties her up, and then tattoos a demon emblem on her neck that will allow the demon to possess and kill her. He tells her she can scream while he does it… but she doesn’t. She bites her lip, and doesn’t. She banters and snarks at him, she’s mildly irritated that she has to blow her allowance money to get rid of it, but it’s not something she brings up, now or ever in the future. Jenny is clearly much more bothered about her own violation than Buffy is of hers. Buffy is the Slayer, and this kind of thing can and does happen to her, and she’s better equipped to take it than anyone else, but some of the things that happen to her obviously scar her and hurt and traumatize her… this one doesn’t. This one she braves, and moves on from intact.

In the ending scene, Giles tells Buffy he was short-sighted and foolish about all this Eyghon stuff that he tried to hide from her, and Buffy says hey, they’ve got something in common, which is a little weird, but kind of okay. Which is an amazingly sweet sentiment to end on.

Buffy Grows Up:

The past three episodes in this show (Reptile Boy, Halloween, and Lie to Me) have very much dealt with the theme of Buffy clinging to her youth and innocence as much as possible. But this episode forces her to step up and be the adult when the actual grown-up in her life fails, almost like life is giving her a trial run before she’s confronted with the really heavy stuff later in this season.

Giles tells Buffy about a delivery of blood going to the hospital at night, and says he’ll meet her there to make sure it doesn’t fall into any vampire hands. He warns her not to be late, and she isn’t… but he misses their date completely, because his Eyghon past is dredged up. Buffy goes to his house to ask what happened, and when she finds him drunk and unshaven and aloof, reports his behavior to Miss Calendar.

Ethan shows Buffy his own Eyghon tattoo and urges her to ask Giles about it. Giles tries to deflect, just telling her to get away from Ethan, but Buffy holds her ground. When she presses Giles again later, he tells her to stop asking because it’s none of her business.

And she doesn’t care. She presses again, and again, seeing that there’s a demon on the loose she needs to stop, but Giles doesn’t confess until the demon infects Jenny. He finally tells Buffy of his past, of him and his four friends summoning Eyghon for the demonic power he possessed, letting it infect each of them in turn until one of them died. Buffy pinches her forehead the way an exasperated parent does, and then leaves to fight this thing. He tries to follow… and she benches him. She says she has the gang working on a way to fix this, but that he’ll slow her down if he comes.

She and her team fight to save the day, as well as Miss Calendar, but Buffy watches as Jenny pulls away from Giles, saying she needs space to recover from this. Buffy tells him it was scary, finding out that he’s just a person when all this time she thought he was a grown-up.

And then she pulls out a CD of the music he hates, waving it in front of his face, urging him to scold her for it.

Letting him back in, to be the adult again. When the situation called for it, she stepped up and handled the problem, cleaning up the mess of her father figure, but now that it’s over, she lets him slide right back into his role in her life, the way Jenny can’t at the moment.

She’s still a child, and yet not a child. But Buffy is extremely skilled at playing the role that’s needed of her in the moment, and also finding solace in the role she wishes she could have when she’s permitted to.

Wild British Guys:

To the delight of the Anglophile in me, this season sure delivers on completely unhinged British characters. Giving Giles a dark past and an episode where he made a major mistake and is paying for it, letting Buffy take the reins and clean up his mess, is just… ahh so good for his character development, especially this early on.

And setting aside Spike and Dru for now since they’re not in this episode, let’s talk about Ethan Rayne and just how much fun he is!

Ethan is introduced in the Halloween episode as a servant of chaos, and in his final episode, A New Man, Giles will accuse him of worshipping chaos as his religion. This really isn’t touched on as much as it could be in his regrettably few episodes, but I think there’s so much we can infer about his character, purely based on the fact that chaos is his thing.

Because for one, he’s so clean-cut, well-dressed, intelligent, pays his rent on time, can meticulously tattoo someone at a moment’s notice, and has a polished accent and a repertoire of wit. So like… he’s got a lot going for him. He’s not a scrapper, he has no reason to be. He could be living a totally normal boring life right now, but instead he chooses to wreak havoc, because he can, and it’s fun, and he’s never quite outgrown his wild youth.

He’s not even inherently evil. As far as we know he hasn’t sold his soul or has lent out his body for any demonic practices… Eyghon aside, obviously, and even that he’s anxious to get rid of as soon as possible. But he IS evil and a villain, again just because he wants to be, and can be, so he gets up every morning and looks for ways he can sow chaos and have a good time.

But he’s also got a level of pathetic ridiculousness to him that makes him endearing, and saves him from being just some cheesy slimeball. He gets captured and found out in every one of his episodes, even lamenting in one of them that he needs to learn how to get the job done and leave, instead of staying to gloat. He’s a smooth talker, but not smooth enough to get what he wants, pretty much ever. He uses Buffy as a human shield when confronted with demons who want to kill him, and his banter with her in this episode is TOP NOTCH. Since I couldn’t put them all in the Top 5 Quotes section and me just gushing about them won’t convince you of how great they are, I’m just gonna put their exchanges here: ***

Buffy: You sold me that dress for Halloween, and nearly got us all killed!

Ethan: But you looked great.

Buffy: Honesty. Nice touch. Ethan: It's one of my virtues. Not really.

Buffy: Giles told me everything. Look, it's coming for you.

Ethan: And you came to protect me? I'm touched. Buffy: Don't worry, it's nothing personal. To protect Giles I have to protect you. Ethan: How does Ripper inspire such goodness? Buffy: 'Cause he's Giles. Ethan: And I'm not. Still, lucky me. Buffy: Hmm. Lucky you. Ethan: Well, we can't run. Eyghon will find us. This mark's like a homing beacon. Buffy: That's okay. I'm not much into running. Ethan: Aren't we manly? Buffy: One of us is. You're gonna hide till it's over. Ethan: Excellent plan.

Buffy: What fun?

Ethan: Your initiation.

Buffy: You know what? I'm not real interested in joining your club.

BtVS for the favorite things ask game?

ok!!!

my favorite female character: Cordelia of course.....though if we're counting her more as an AtS character then it'd be poor beleaguered Anya, who has too much sense by far for the rest of the Scoobies to handle.

my favorite male character: Spoike my horrible little man who is faking his accent and cheats at kitten poker <3 he sucks sooo bad (affectionate) (also objectively true since he is a vampire)

my favorite book/season/etc: This one's tricky -- I think S5 probably takes it in the end, although I think the overall arc of S2 is very impressive and the highs are higher. But I prefer big sister Buffy to only child Buffy and the later seasons cast line-up to the early seasons cast line-up, and S2 has a lot of bad episodes, whereas S5's worst episodes are just kind of whatever. S3 is also very strong overall, but it doesn't emotionally grab me the way S2 and S5 do.

my favorite episode (if its a tv show): This one's even trickier! I think "Becoming" (especially its second part) is definitely in the running for its amazing character work for Buffy and the whole cast. "Lovers Walk" gets points for the sheer amount of fun it packs into its runtime. "Who Are You?" is another contender, largely due to SMG's absolute tour-de-force performance as Faith. "Restless" would be a contender if it weren't for the horrifically racist treatment of the First Slayer that infects the entire episode, which knocks it soundly off its otherwise well-earned pedestal. "The Gift" is very, very good as well. (I'm not as big on "The Body" as everyone else -- it's good, I just don't think it's one of the show's top episodes.) And I think "Dead Things" is probably the most challenging episode the show ever put forth, which I appreciate deeply. (I enjoy the songs in OMWF a lot, but as an episode I don't think it's super cohesive, so while it's up there for me, I don't think I can say it's the show's best.)

my favorite cast member: I honestly don't really tend to get super invested in actors, so, idk? I guess I'd say that, while she's nowhere near the show's strongest actor -- in fact I would argue she's one of those actors who is extremely good at playing one specific part and basically can't play anything else -- I nonetheless have a lot of respect for Eliza Dushku as a person, what with how she's spoken up about the sexual abuse, harassment, and mistreatment she's faced within the industry, and how she threw her full support behind the people speaking up about Joss Whedon despite having a positive experience with him herself.

my favorite ship: Most of my favorite Buffyverse ships are AtS ships, but my favorite BtVS ship is ultimately probably Buffy/Spike, despite, um, everything -- I think they have a lot of really fun interactions and I buy their friendship in early S6 and S7, and I appreciate that the show made some attempt (YMMV how successful it was) to deconstruct and problematize the enemies-to-lovers trope. That said, my ideal endgame for them is that they end up as friends, not lovers. And the way some people talk about that ship on here is......well. It's something innit. In terms of other ships I like: despite what I'm about to say about Giles below, I do like his interactions with Anya a lot and I feel like there were some romantic implications in "Grave" that weirdly never got picked up again in S7. I think a Giles/Anya romance would be a lot better than S7 trying to resurrect the shuffling corpse of Xander/Anya. ...Although, I'm also a "Willow should've killed Giles in Grave" truther, so, I'll also propose a Willow/Anya romance, because they had good chemistry in "Selfless" and it'd be funny.

a character I’d die defending: It used to be Dawn and Cordelia, but honestly the fandom has cooled off a lot when it comes to hating those characters, so, uh, I definitely still defend them ardently when needed, but they don't need it as much these days as they used to. Buffy still gets some very weird things said about her which I think she should be defended from, although I also think there's pockets of fandom that act like she has never done a single thing wrong in her life ever, which is a point of view I also don't subscribe to. Faith I think is in a weird position where she has done some legitimately awful things, which some of her more hardcore fans gloss over, but some people are strangely hellbent on making up things she didn't do to get mad at her for, which I can't abide. People are also deeply weird about Joyce, as you know, but, like, I'm not a Joyce Fan or anything, I don't even think she's a particularly amazing mother, I just think people seem entirely incapable of seeing things from her point of view and weirdly insistent that her relationship with Buffy was worse than it was. So, IDK. Most of the women, I guess. Except Willow. Sorry Willow, I'm sure some people are weird about you too, but the narrative is too nicies to you already.

a character I just can’t sympathize with: Yeah, it's Giles. He's the character who has gone down the most in my estimation over time, particularly as I've gotten older. S1 Giles is arguably sympathetic, with his fate somewhat paralleled to Buffy's, but as the show goes on, the character and worldbuilding develop to a point where it becomes pretty irrefutable that this is a guy who profits off of Buffy's suffering and could stop doing that at any time, who abandons her when she needs him most, and who then has the gall to act like he should have any say in the decisions she makes about her life afterwards. Additionally, the way he seems totally indifferent to Xander's home life and clear desire for a non-abusive father figure/masculine role model, and even more egregiously (given that it is literally his job to 'watch' her) the way he seems totally indifferent to Faith's lack of a home or family or any kind of support, is profoundly foul to me, and yet another thing that's made worse by the retcon that Giles is well-off and gets paid to do this. (The Faith stuff is even worse when you remember that Giles, too, has accidentally killed people, yet he makes no effort to try to reach out to her. Angel's attempt to reach out may have been bad, but at least it was an attempt.) I've read a lot of meta on here about how Giles was deeply affected by Jenny's death and how that made him feel like he had somehow doomed her by loving her, or even when Jenny isn't brought into it a lot of people will say that Giles thinks he is an awful person who makes people's lives worse and that's why he holds himself at such a distance, and like, that's a fine interpretation, but I don't actually see any evidence that that's true? To me that's in the realm of "Xander hates vampires because of Jesse" -- it's something that could psychologically make sense for a real person, and you could write about in a fanfic and have it be quite interesting, but I struggle to see any real basis for that idea in canon. And of course I should add that I think Giles should probably suck, for the show to work; if he's a good father figure the story doesn't really happen. But he sucks in such deeply baffling and unsympathetic ways to me that I just really don't like him anymore at this point, aside from the occasional Buffy-Giles emotional beat or snarky one-liner that makes me smile.

a character I grew to love: This one definitely goes to Buffy -- I think pre-Dawn Buffy is a well-done but ultimately fairly typical Campbell-style comic hero, whose character is largely elevated by SMG's iconic performance and by BtVS's strategy of using monster-of-the-week episodes to mirror Buffy's internal journey. I like her fine in the early seasons, but it's only really in S5 that she starts to grab my emotional attention, and it's in S6 that I truly love her -- S6 is a mess, but I think Buffy's arc in that season is utterly compelling and beautiful, and it gives me so much more affection and appreciation for her character. As for S7...well, let's just not speak of that, shall we.

my anti otp: With apologies as always to my Bangel followers & mutuals, I find Buffy/Angel to be not entirely uninteresting to think about (especially in S2, which is when I think the writers had the strongest sense of what they wanted to say with that relationship), but they are profoundly tedious to watch. Melodrama that is played straight is rarely appealing to me, and I can't for the life of me imagine them in an actual adult relationship -- what would they talk about? As Buffy herself admits, they were never actually friends, and so many of their conversations on the show just revolve around how they shouldn't and/or can't be together but they want to anyway. I also think, as the shows go on, they develop different values and their lives go in such different directions that I don't think they would work as a couple in the future, either. Both of them are better off, IMO, moving on and living separate lives.

I like to think buffy and spike are my favourite characters in the whole buffyverse but I tell you what I cannot seem have a conversation about this show without shoving willow and xander into it. could have fuck all to do with them, and yet. I find a way.

it's 2024 and Eliza's Faith Lehane is STILL the MVP!

so yeah, yet another Eliza Dushku appreciation post!

(I'm remaking this in 2024 to keep it positive. Felt like my last version of this got overly negative about a certain character and ship.)

Yes I am still not over the fact that Faith didn't have a last name until 2 years AFTER BTVS went off the air. She literally DID NOT HAVE A LAST NAME the whole time she was on the show. (Neither did Kendra BTW.)

In the literal dictionary sense: Faith is technically a minor character in terms of screen time. (Whaaaa???) She was in 20 episodes of BTVS and 6 of ATS. She was never listed in the main cast for either. She was not in the BTVS (or ATS) 20 year cast reunion.

We know Eliza played Faith as having a crush on Buffy. In cons Eliza consistently supported the idea of Fuffy (Faith x Buffy). If your view cuts off the right gif caption, it's Eliza saying "me and Buffy should've made out."

26 years after her debut, and people are still talking about Faith Lehane! There's gorgeous gifsets and insightful meta essays and brilliant shit posts and cute text posts and amazing webweaving poetry posts and even polls about Faith. And all the same for Fuffy! (I'm not even talking about the fanfic, even though new Faith and Fuffy fanfic is still getting posted.)

(also pretend there's a gif here from that 2022 movie Crush where Chantal says "I post to tumblr all the time. That's mostly just like Buffy, Faith...")

Faith and Fuffy are still inspiring people, even though the show has been off the air for 20+ years now!

So... also proud to be a part of FUFFY Nation. Sometimes I get a little choked up (like Buffy here) and sometimes I get impressed and thoughtful (like Faith here).

What fandoms do you write for? I’m a one-fandom-at-a-time writer. Currently, I write for Stranger Things. Previously, some in the Captain America and Thor MCU fandoms, Merlin, due South, BtVS, and Angel. I have a smattering of other fandoms in there as well.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Steve’s No Good, Terrible, Kinda Perfect Senior Year (ST) He Sets the Tone (ST) A Paladin’s Work is Never Done (ST) She Sets The Agenda (ST) As I Hesitated, Time Rushed Onwards Without Me (Merlin)

Do you respond to comments? I try to. I figure I’ve let a few drop over the years by accident and I’ve never had a story get crazy popular with too many comments to respond to either.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Generally I write happy endings but Chosen, Rare Minds is a short, one shot downer. (It’s a canon compliant missing scene fic for the Captain America fandom is angsty in that it’s about Peggy and Howard deciding to move forward with bring Armin Zola into SHIELD using operation paperclip)

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I feel like so many of my stories have happy endings, but many of them are series that aren’t done, so the real ending (which will be happy) isn’t published yet. Of the published ones, I think maybe Translucent Hearts. Steve basically dies in the beginning of the story but by the end Steve, Eddie, Robin, and everyone Steve cares about is in a better place and happy with their lives. Lust, Love, and Other Side Effects also has a really happy ending for Steddie specifically.

Do you get hate on fics? I have a dirty, sweet short Darcy/Steve fic that has a shit ton of hits, but no love/kudos and two shitty comments (basically saying that it wasn’t what they expected, but I don’t know what to say, it was tagged and described accurately). Still, it’s tentacle dildo pegging and people don’t seem to want to own up to liking it. Only weird/mean comments I’ve gotten.

Do you write smut? Yes, but the least amount for Stranger Things. For some fandoms all I ever wrote for them was for kink bingo on LJ. I had to learn how to plot before I could do anything but write porn.

Do you write crossovers? Yup! Love a good crossover or fusion. I still love that I am the only Stranger Things/Highlander crossover fic in the fandom.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? I don’t think so.

Have you ever had a fic translated? Again, I don’t think so. No one has told me if they did.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Nope

What's your all time favorite ship? I am a true mulitshipper and trying to figure out a favorite ship in a single fandom is nearly impossible. I don’t think I could ever do it for all my fandoms ever.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? To: Birdbrian c/o the Wakandan Royal Residence - I’ve marked it complete, but it was supposed to be a series of short postcards between Natasha and Clint after Civil War. It was an experiment with writing a WIP that obviously didn’t work.

What are your writing strengths? For someone who writes fluffy stuff: angst, miscommunication (done right, meaning from actual character flaws not contrivance), and horror. Also, dialogue, character arcs, tight plotting, world building (fannish expansion style), and characterization.

What are your writing weaknesses? For all that I write sex, I still feel like it’s more mechanical than I want it to be. Action scenes, rising action and real stakes (I don’t want my babies hurt), emotions, subtle interactions between people - I always have to spell things out.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Super short phrases maybe. But for most MCU stuff I either avoided it or used italics to get across the fact that the dialog was not in English.

First fandom you wrote for? Buffy!

Favorite fics you've written? Steve’s No Good, Terrible, Kinda Perfect Senior Year series, Translucent Hearts, and my Eddie-centric story about Eddie being from the Lab: Future Hazy Try Again (and the rest of the series but I’m really proud of the first story). My older stuff is not my proudest stuff at this point. Some of it is over 20 years old and it shows.

yes! i try my very very best to respond to all of them, especially on newer fics. i usually fall behind on older fics/don't prioritize responding as much, but if there's one that is really kind/really touches me i always make a note to respond.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

i've written a lot of depressing shit for the merlin fandom. i think winter always turns to spring might be one of the saddest all around, though.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

my hairdresser!steve fics are the happiest/fluffiest things i've ever written. but most of my fics have a happy ending! i think maybe memoria has one of the happiest tho?

8. Do you get hate on fics?

not really. i got One troll comment on a fic a few months ago that i just deleted and blocked lol.

9. Do you write smut?

every once in a while! i don't feel i'm very good at it, so it takes me a loooong time to write it when i do.

10. Do you write crossovers?

not in the traditional sense of combining fandoms, but if my btvs au counts as a crossover then yes?

this is such a rude question tbqh !!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm going to default back and say merthur, because they were the one and only and a constant in my life for so long. (steddie and payneland make me so fucking crazy tho)

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

there is a steddie wip called "tightly hidden fists" i started in LITERALLY july 2022. it's still sitting in my google docs at 20k+ and i'm starting to doubt if i'll ever finish it. i keep considering signing up for a round of a steddie bang or something but i'm scared to do that to myself again lmfao.

16. What are your writing strengths?

i think i'm very good at dialogue, and getting The Voice of the character down. those things are usually what come to me first when i'm writing.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

for lack of a better word...filler? transitionary bits of fic. i overuse phrases/words like a madman, i also think i am a victim of trying to be too flowery when i can just, like, tone it the fuck down. are those weaknesses????

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

if it's easily translatable sentences (short and sweet, nothing too complicated) i put in the language in italics. (like, bonjour.) but frankly, i tend to avoid putting other languages in my fics. i don't often need to, and since i don't speak any language other than english i don't want to butcher anything if i can help it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

probably the peter pan self insert i wrote many times between the ages of like 8-12.

20. Favorite fics you've written?

fields of gold mention. my love letter to bbcm. i'm also very proud of memoria, my 2023 steddie bang.

3. What fandoms do you write for? It's been Avatar the Last Airbender for the past few years. I have an old & probably not-good Rick & Morty fic up. Before that, I had some IT fics. I've got an orphaned fic for scream & one for house of 1000 corpses.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

the benefits of getting a flat tire this is Zuko running away from home & running right into the gaang - also uncovering some family mysteries & reconciling with Azula. modern au. it's Zukka & aw I'm nostalgic for those early days of mine in the fandom

if this were a movie this is basically an ATLA Hollywood Au. Zukka & Azutara. Past Jetko. I was happy with some of the dramatic moments in this fic.

not another high school au lord help me lmao. I'm SO sorry if you are reading this & you happen to love this fic but it's not the thing I'm most proud of. this is basically just me dipping my toes into writing ATLA modern AUs & in that sense I guess it's nostalgic? this is the fic I wrote as a newbie to the fandom just trying it out & I still do lovingly appreciate everyone who was kind & welcoming in those early days!

six feet under ATLA TVD AU MY BELOVED OMG. this is a vampire diaries au. there are no 1:1 translations but azula is damon, katara is a mix of jeremy & elena & so is sokka, zuko is stefan & YEAH. also aang is bonnie & iirc I probably even gave toph something fun to do. ozai is Katherine which is forever hilarious to me. yeah, this was a fun fic.

5. in search of glorious happenings of happenstance this fic is about nothing & everything at the same time. atla/modern world fusion with the four nations existing but also it's modern. all the atla teens/kids are going to college at ember island university & the fic takes place across a year. it's slice of life, comedy, drama, & chaos. lots of ships but I think azutara & jet/zuko/jin are probably, at the end of the day, the romances that are at the heart of this story although platonic relationships are also pretty important in this fic, IMO as much as romances. it's probably my magnum opus or something.

Do you respond to comments? yes <3 I am sometimes slow & I am not perfect but I TREASURE comments & do attempt to let people know as much. I write for myself, I post for the connections I make along the way.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? the devil you know for sure. this is my atla/scream modern au. I talk about it constantly because I'm so insanely proud of it but if you don't know it's exactly what it sounds like. it's horror & tragedy that I feel really proud of & I do think those elements are at the heart of my writing passion despite me usually being a bit nervous about using them. so. I'm proud of this fic. & it has a very bittersweet ending but the tragedy is...there's a lot of tragedy. no more spoilers because I want people to read this!

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? most of my fics have decently happy endings despite me claiming to prefer tragedy lol. I seem to recall the things we leave behind (mailee youtuber au with jetko & auztara. & they were roommates!) having a tooth rottingly fluffy ending lol

8. Do you get hate on fics? not really. it's happened before but it's not a big thing.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? sometimes I write the smutty scenes from my fics then save it only for myself. no you can't see. it's probably terrible. there's some shitty zucest smut of mine out there somewhere but I'm not sure it's any good & couldn't tell you where to find it lol

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I think the AUs I write are called "fusion" because it's more "inserting characters into another world & the characters of that world aren't a thing." but my fic the balance of things was actually a crossover with characters from both wizards of waverly place & atla interacting. also I wrote THIS one-shot that's a crossover between the game the coffin of andy & leyley & the show wizards of waverly place. I didn't post it on ao3 but I'm just saying.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I don't think so?

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? I have vague memories of doing this with this girl I was online friends with back in my fanfic.net days, years ago. I think it was Destiel.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? to write? I don't have one right now. I think maybe I got kinda burnt out on everything having to be about one ship or whatever rather than just telling the story & maybe that's a small part of why I'm taking a temporary break from fic writing & focusing on an original story so I'm not staying within fandom approved in parameters & I can just do whatever feels right ya know? I like Cisne's answer about any willow ship tho. me with my faves tbh hehe

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? can't think of one but I can think of fanfic ideas I'd like to return to & fully realize after I get back in the mood

16. What are your writing strengths? I like to think I'm okay at characterization although moving away from fanfic & working on something original has me questioning myself constantly!

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I'm very lazy & often neglect research. sometimes if I don't know how to explain something I just change the whole scene so i don't have to bother.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? could be neat in the right context!

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? maybe 'in search of glorious happenings of happenstance.' I think 'the devil you know' is objectively the strongest. but happenstance is just such a specific version of the characters that's fun to me? it's one of those two that's my favorite, depending on my mood
