One of my favorite headcanons is that Leo grew up watching telenovelas with Splinter.

It just works so well - his bits of Spanish that he spouts randomly, his showy way of apologizing, and, of course, his love for dramatic betrayals all point to this being a very real possibility.

Plus, it’s very cute to imagine a tiny Leo at his father’s side as they both gasp in shock when the show’s eighth plot twist in just as many episodes happens.

I NEED to have it addressed in fic form that the Rise turtles are fundamentally different than all their other counterparts, because their counterparts? They were accidents. Just a couple of turtles splashed with mutagen and oh look now they’re people but Green. (Huge oversimplification I’m aware but hear me out okay-)

But the Rise boys were created. They were specifically designed to be weapons of mass destruction. They were built with the intent to cause harm which means they were bioengineered to be stronger, smarter(?), faster, to heal quicker, to have the capacity to take hard hits while dishing out even harder ones, they were literally forged with a purpose to kill.

Add on their mystic powers? Then their unlocked Ninpo? You can’t honestly tell me that these four aren’t the strongest and potentially deadliest version of themselves out there.

Yes they still had to learn things, as did the other iterations, they weren’t immediately good (that much is obvious, like c’mon it’s IN the name) but I don’t think the other iterations possess the same instincts as these guys do. They’re just so. Unhinged. They’ve all had their moments in the show I think where it’s obvious they’re not really,,, stable. I love them.

In a plain fists only, maybe weapons, no powers fight, I do think some of the other iterations would win, but purely because they have way more experience than these guys do. (If I did any crossovers I’d say 2003 and 2012 are definitely older than these guys, especially if we’re basing this at the end of their shows) But put them against each other when they’re still at the same level? Rise is whooping butt, I know where I’m placing my bets. It’s called RISE of the TMNT for a reasonnnnnn they’re not there yet but they WILL BE, and as of the end of s2 and the movie I say they’re finally THERE.

The Hunter’s Bible also by TurtleSoupSwimmer [2/2 chapters, 15k words] Rated Mature, contains themes of SA and c@nnibalism so PLEASE keep that in mind!! Not a fic for the faint of heart this is a Dead Dove: Do Not Eat! The SA is only attempted, and never shown, only implied, and it’s only in ch 1, but the other stuff is fairly descriptive and takes place in ch 2. All that being said, flipping UNHINGED, just about lost my mind in ch 2, it was entertaining in a surreal kinda way if you get what I mean. Funky little feral creatures

Whenever I do a rewatch of ROTTMNT, I always get thrown by how sad this Donnie line is in Flushed, But Not Forgotten. Mostly, because most of the moments that the fandom loves to angst over aren’t jokes and are played as serious scenes (Ex: Donnie vs Witch Town, the doomed timeline, Donnie’s Splinter callout at the demo derby, etc). But- the fact it’s played as a joke is actually why it HURTS.

Donnie actually expressing something that bothers him? Nah- just a middle child-ism.

Okay guys I’ve got another comic going on now :). This one is actually written by @ineedseveretherapy and it’s called Truth Or Dare. I kid you not this made me cry. Call me sensitive but man I couldn’t get this out of my head until I decided I HAD TO DRAW IT.

So with permissions from the creator (thank you again, by the way) I started drawing. I struggled so hard to not put as much detail and color and attention into this comic like Warfare because I really like the story, but I knew if I did my main comic would suffer, so I hope you guys are okay with messy sketches haha.

But for real, give this story a read I really like it and there are two parts. Please mind the trigger warnings and tags. Truth or Dare pt.2

After about 30 minutes of waiting Leo finally just decided to wait for them in his room. He sat down on his bed and stared at the ceiling letting his thoughts roam.

Well... This should be interesting...? Now you got everyone involved in your stupid little problems, how does it feel to be nothing but a nuisance.

He rolled over and covered his ears with his pillows trying to block out the voice in his head.

So, what are you going to do now? Sit here and wait like a goddamn idiot? You could just... y'know, end it now. Make all their problems go away, be more productive then this wouldn't it?

"For once in my goddamn life could you shut up?"

Oh don't act like you disagree with me, you know i'm right.

"I'm not listening!"

Oh look who's suddenly all self aware? You think pretending to block me out is gonna solve anything? What happens when Donnie, Raph and Mikey come huh? What happens when they find out? Your just gonna add more problems to the already long list that you created in the first place. Some brother.

Leo groaned,

"Can Donnie just hurry up already..."

Donnie walked down the hallway with Raph and Mikey. Filling them in on Leo's situation wasn't the easiest thing in the world, Mikey was crying a lot and Raph almost had a panic attack. He was consoling Raph as Mikey walked ahead of the two of them, they were heading for the living room to talk to Leo.

"Raph you need to be calm when we talk to him, right now I think it's best not to overwhelm him."

"I'm trying Donnie, I really am..."

"Donnie!"

"Yeah Mikey?"

"Didn't you say Leo was in the living room!?"

Donnie's heart dropped and he rushed to Mikey's side. He surveyed the living room, he wasn't there. Now he felt like he was going to have a panic attack.

"Ok, let's not freak out, I'm sure he's- he's probably in his room!"

Donnie looked down at MIkey, both equally concerned.

"C'mon."

Leo flinched as he heard a knock on his door, it was Donnie.

"Come in..."

The door opened to Donnie, who looked just as worried as when he'd left, Raph, who looked like he'd seen a ghost, and Mikey, who was obviously holding back the urge from both assaulting him with a hug and interogating him with Dr. Feelings. Leo didn't really know what to say so he just looked at Donnie. Donnie looked equally confused, but it didn't take long for Raph to walk up.

"Hey Leo..."

He bent down to meet Leo's gaze and put a hand on his shoulder.

"Donnie told us about... your conversation. Do you mind if we talk with you?"

Leo nodded his head and Raph let out a shaky sight. He sat down next to Leo on his bed. He'd never seen Leo like this before, so fragile and vulnerable, like he could break at any second. He didn't really know how to keep going without crying at least a little bit, thankfully he didn't have to.

"Leo why didn't you tell us any of this?"

Leo looked over at his little brother, the pain in his voice was apparent, it didn't really hit him until now that, this was just as hard for them as it was for him. Leo looked back down at his lap again.

"Didn't wanna bother you guys..."

Leo made sure to mumble his response in hopes his brothers wouldn't hear, unfortunately for him Mikey was paying very close attetion.

"YOU DIDN'T WANNA BOTHER US!?"

His words shocked Mikey. Leo flinched at the sudden shift in Mikey's tone.

"Mikey..."

Raph put an arm around Leo. Mikey turned his head to his older brother, enraged and hurt by the calmness in Raph's voice. How could he be so okay with this?

"I'm sorry, but has to hear how stupid that is!"

His head turned back to Leo as a knot in is his stomach started to form.

"You do understand how stupid that is, don't you?"

Leo shrugged, refusing to make eye contact, he didn't want to see the pain he was causing his brothers.

"Leo, we really need you to talk to us... We just want to know what's going on..."

"I don't really think you'd like the answer..."

Mikey was losing his patience,

"THAT DOESN'T MATTER! WE-"

"Micheal."

Mikey turned his head to Donnie, he knew he shouldn't be freaking out but it was hard not to. He was overwhelmed by the whirlwind of emotions he was feeling right now and it all ended up translating as anger.

"We're not getting anywhere with this."

"Dee's right. Leo-"

Leo had been zoning out and snapped back to reality at the sound of his name causing him to flinch slightly. Seeing Leo get so scared at nothing but his own name was like a punch to the gut for Raph, he tightened his grip on Leo's shoulder.

"Leo, look at me."

Leo hesitantly looked up at his older brother. His gaze was met with a warm smile, however it failed to make him feel any better.

"We're not mad, and your not in trouble... We just need you be honest... We can't help you if we don't know what's going on."

Leo looked over at Mikey, and then at Donnie, and then at his lap once more.

"Ok..."

Raph sighed, relieved that they were finally getting somewhere. Hopefully this wouldn't be as hard as they thought, but that was probably just wishful thinking.

"Ok, uh... Mikey, you wanna start? Please, be calm..."

The little turtle shook his head as he took a step closer to Leo and stared firmly into his eyes, which were still looking at his lap.

"How many times have you tried to... kill yourself...?"

The words passed through his throat like a heavy brick. It was so shocking that any of them are having this conversation, with Leo of all people, their faceman! Sure Leo always had a bit of an obsession for validation, and Mikey always noticed how his self esteem was almost always lower than he made it out to be, but nothing ever this severe. How? How could he miss something THIS BIG? How had he never even noticed that his brother was in so much pain... what did he do wrong...?

"Leo...?"

"...A couple times..."

Mikey bawled his hands into fists.

"How many times is a couple times...?"

"About...2, or... 3 or..."

Leo paused,

"6..."

The room was hit with immediate silence. All three brothers felt as if they had just been shot, or at the very least stabbed. Donnie was frozen in his place, his mind racing. Mikey made a little gasping sound when Leo answered and covered his mouth with his hands, as he began to shake and tears began to form. Raph's grip on Leo's shoulder became so tight that it felt like his bones were about snap in half, his heart beating a mile a minute. Raph felt like he was going pass out. Leo looked up at his brothers, all in a perpetual state of shock, and without further thinking he put his hands up and panicked.

"BU-BUT I DIDN'T ACTUALLY GO THROUGH WITH ANY OF IT I SWEAR! I'M FINE! I'M STILL HERE, SEE?"

The three turtles started daggers into their brother. He made it worse... Leo immediately shot his head back down, wish he could take back this entire afternoon.

"Y'know..."

Leo sighed,

"You guys can say if your mad..."

"MAD!? WE'RE WORRIED!"

"No. No Mikey that's an understatement. We're not worried, we're scared- I'm scared! I'm terrified! I'm supposed to be your big brother! I'm supposed to protect you! To care for you! To keep you safe!"

Raph's voice began to crack and his hands begun to shake.

"I'M SUPPOSED TO LOOK OUT FOR YOU! BUT NOW I FIND OUT THAT UNDER MY WATCH YOU'VE ALMOST COMMITTED 6 TIMES AND I HAD NO IDEA!? WHAT KIND OF BIG BROTHER AM I!?"

Tears began to form in Raph's eyes, he felt like his whole world was shattering around him.

"Raph..."

Leo watched as his older brother shook and cried. It made his heart bleed knowing that he was causing his brother so much pain! This was all his fault anyways! God! why did he have to be like this!

"Raph no you-... I-I.... I didn't-... You couldn't have known, you-..."

Leo was starting to spiral as he felt his own body begin to shake. He could hear a faint yet sharp voice in the back of his mind,

Look at what you did... Raph's about to have a heart attack and it's all your fault! You see what your dumb little problems are doing to this family?

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry! I-I-I... this wasn't..."

Leo's breathes became short and sharp, a giant knot began twisting in his stomach, he almost thought he heard a ringing in his ears. Donnie, who had been quietly observing quietly from the doorway, noticed Leo go into a spiral and the sight of both his older brother and his twin breaking down made him want to scream. He took a deep breath, and walked over next to Mikey.

"Leo... breathe... you need to breathe..."

Raph looked over at Leo as he took in deep shaky breaths.

"I'm sorry..."

Leo spoke in such a monotone voice, he wasn't even paying attention to what he was saying anymore, he was stuck spiraling in his own head.

"Don't apologize! It's not your fault!"

"Yes it is... made you cry... I deserve it..."

Raph grabbed both of Leo's shoulders, turned his body around causing Leo to look up at him.

"Why would you think that you deserve any of this!?"

His voice cracked as he spoke in a pleading tone of voice.

"BECAUSE ALL I'M DOING IS HURTING YOU GUYS!"

Leo felt tears roll down his cheeks.

"THAT'S NOT TRUE!"

Leo looked at Mikey,

"IT'S NOT!? LOOK AROUND YOU! LOOK AT YOUR HANDS! HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO DRAW OR COOK EVER SINCE YOU OPENED THAT PORTAL!?"

Leo then looked at Raph,

"AND RAPH! TELL ME WITH ALL HONESTY THAT YOU'VE BEEN ABLE TO TRAIN AND FIGHT WITHOUT ANY DIFFICULTIES! EVEN WITH ONLY ONE WORKING EYE!"

Leo then looked over at Donnie,

"AND DONNIE CAN'T EVEN LEAVE HIS ROOM WITHOUT HIS BATTLE SHELL! I SAW THE SCARS! I'M NOT DUMB!"

Leo moved his head back in Mikey's direction.

"SO TELL ME THAT I HAVEN'T HURT YOU GUYS!"

"YOU HAVEN'T! IT WASN'T YOUR CHOICE TO OPEN THAT PORTAL LEO, IT WAS MINE! AND I'D DO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN IF IT MEANT THAT YOU WERE SAFE! THAT YOU DIDN'T DIE!"

"BETTER ME THAN ONE OF YOU GUYS!"

Mikey gritted his teeth as he also began to cry.

"NO! NO IT'S NOT! YOUR LIFE ISN'T ANY LESS IMPORTANT THAN OURS LEO! YOU MATTER! YOUR IMPORTANT! YOUR OUR BROTHER AND- AND..."

Mikey pulled Leo into a tight hug as he began sobbing in his arms.

"Wel love you Leo..."

"Mikey..."

"Don't! Don't you dare speak!"

Mikey choked on his tears as he heard Leo's heartbeat slowdown. Leo sat there, for some reason, something clicked in his mind, they did love him. Of course they did, they were his brothers, he always knew they loved him so why did he all of a sudden feel like it was some new discovery.

"I..."

He crumpled into Mikey's arms, tears bursting from his eyes. His sobs felt like a foreign sound, they were sharp and pained, but it was what he needed, he needed this, even though it hurt. Raph took one look at Leo and Mikey before scooping them up in a teary bear hug. The three turtles were one emotional mess, all sobbing and shaking. Donnie walked closer them and put a hand on Raph's shell, he was teary eyed just like the rest of them. After a while, they calmed down and Leo had this strange warm feeling in his chest a feeling he hadn't felt in months.

"I'm sorry guys..."

"No! Stop apologizing!"

Mikey grabbed Leo's face forcing Leo to look at him.

"Leo! Look at me! We! Love! You! You're our brother and we love you! Repeat that back to me!"

"I'm your brother and you love me..."

"Your life matters!"

"My life matters..."

"Good! Don't you dare forget that!"

Leo smiled at his younger brother, a real, genuine smile.

"We're here to help you Leo. We're going to help you, I promise you. But you need to promise me that you're going to be honest and let us help you, promise?"

"I promise..."

Raph smiled and nodded,

"Good."

Leo turned his head over to Donnie, the two looked at each other knowingly. Donnie walked over and gently pulled Leo into another hug.

"No more sneaking out!"

Leo chuckled, and hugged his brother back tightly.

"Ok."

"You're such a dum dum..."

"I know..."

After that night the boys were quick to inform Splinter and April on Leo's situation, and the next couple months were spent helping Leo heal but also helping the others heal as well. Mikey had weekly family meetings and scheduled private meetings with Leo as Dr. Feelings, Raph would help Leo find ways to ground himself and silence his mind by meditating with him every day, and Donnie would always be there for Leo to vent about anything he was to scared to vent to Raph or Mikey about. He was finally getting better, and he wasn't doing it alone.

I wasn't actually planning on doing a part 2 but i'm glad I did. anyways I hope you guys like it!

When you refer to Tyrone as having a learning disability, what specifically are you referring to? I remember at one point it's said he's struggling academically and doesn't "get" certain subjects the way she does, and I think there was at one point a scene in Power Pack where he's having trouble reading and, uh, the youngest Power kid has to help him (though I tried to find that scene later and couldn't, so I may be misremembering or misremembering the book). I fell off reading C & D somewhere in the first few issues of Mutant Misadventures, so there might be more stuff I'm missing.

To be honest though, the way this was written and presented always felt pretty racist to me, because it was /always/ in comparison to a white character and there were /never/ any other Black characters.

Well, his teacher says he has a disability, and specifically says it makes academic achivement difficult. She could easily just be talking about his stutter and does say he's succeeding alright at classes, but her specific description of it making academic achievement difficult does make me think it's more than that.

Later on, Ty is shown as struggling in classes, specifically seeming to struggle with maths and seems to think of himself as stupid and slow, and he ends up lashing out at Tandy because of his frustration with not being as smart as her.

There's less in the modern age but I'll also mention this moment in a dream sequence where the thing that makes Ty realise he's dreaming is that in his fantasy he gets an A, which in his head is so impossible it's the one thing that snapped him back to reality.

These are the more overt descriptions of Ty struggling academically and having some kind of learning disability, but without Cloak it is a heavy subtext to most of his early depictions. Bill Mantlo is also no stranger to writing characters with intellectual disabilities, namely Nuklo from Vision and the Scarlet Witch and Laura Dean from Alpha Flight who are both described as autistic and there are some not dissimilar threads with how he depicts Ty in my opinion. While Ty is never described as autistic on panel, I do think he has some kind of nebulous/unstated learning disability alongside his stutter, because his feelings around his struggling at maths feel less "I'm slow to grasp this subject" and a lot more "I cannot understand this no matter how hard I try and it's causing me distress that I can't understand it".

And yeah, it definitely is racist, but it's weird, because I also do think this depiction was done in an effort to humanise Ty rather than just to make him "worse" than Tandy. Like, it feels very different from say, Lemar Hoskins, who was depicted for a while as illiterate and a guy who barely made it in to high school who couldn't read or write, and that definitely was done in a mean spirited, racist (to be completely fair to Gruenwald, one of the other Bold Urban Commandos, either Hector or Jerome also was depicted as illiterate too, but it's still obviously Deeply Racist) "Look how uneducated this man is", and once Lemar transitioned into a hero that element of his character has just completely disappeared, which I think ultimately is for the best.

By contrast, Ty's disability and speech impediment is used to make him a more sympathetic character? Cloak is depicted as such a non-human, strange and often demonic entity, that Ty having a stutter and a learning disability contrasts him more with Cloak and makes him seem more like Just A Kid In A Bad Situation like Tandy, as opposed to a malevolent figure, which obviously is very racist too. They almost use it as a way to make him seem more innocent or more childlike, I think, which goes hand in hand with just how different Ty is drawn vs when he's Cloak. And this depiction has it's own very obvious problems but I DO think it is a complex choice that I have kind of mixed feelings about, because the depiction and the way it is another layer to his dynamic with Tandy is Odd at the best of times and deeply racist most others, but equally, it makes him feel very real and much more layered as a character and as a person, and I think it DOES make for some very interesting storytelling decisions, that Tandy being privileged is happy to be free of being Dagger, but Ty who is black and disabled and grew up in poverty does feel a certain amount of power and self-determination with being Cloak and misses it when it's gone.

It's complicated. I don't disagree, but as with all things disability in comic books I really wish the answer to this flawed depiction had been to try and treat it more sensitively by listening to more black disabled people in how they choose to depict this character rather than just removing any vestiges of him having a speech impediment and learning disability from most modern comics.

Also re: the Katie teaching Ty to read thing WAS really odd, but it happened very shortly after Terry Austin took over writing duties and I do think he genuinely just mistook Ty's stutter for being like, unable to read or something, because he clearly reads in various previous issues so?? I dunno, it was an incredibly weird moment that didn't really get brought up again so I'm grateful for that, but again, that moment was also clearly meant to make him seem less scary and threatening, and again try to humanise him a little. Wherever or not they succeeded is a difficult question, but I do think that's a very major element of the writer's decisions to show Ty as having a learning disability.

I think one of the reasons why I love to explore the idea of the Prison Dimension and especially Leo being trapped there for considerably longer than canon is that, well, literally anything is possible. Time could pass the same or it could pass faster or it could pass slower or it could go so slow for years and at random outshoot earth by half a decade or vice versa like-?? It’s such a malleable concept.

And I think that very same malleability is what makes it so horrifying.

Because you can toy with the concept of death to its utmost there. You can choose to keep it as with the outside’s reality, where death by injury or sickness or even old age may occur. Or you can assume it is a place that simply won’t let its prisoners die, and that whoever enters is doomed to eternal life in endless void. Or even still, maybe you can die, but you’re rewound, or your soul can’t escape (or is kept there), and now you’re in a cycle, back and forth between life and death.

That doesn’t even touch upon whether the inhabitants can age, or grow, or if they need sustenance, or sleep, or if there’s any other life in there at all aside from who you’re thrown in with. And, if there is other life, is that life friendly? And could you even come across it in the vastness of the space?

How big is the Prison Dimension, even? If you went forward one direction for as long as you could, would you never run out of space, or would it cycle you back around to the other side? Gravity seems to be both there and not, so I wonder if the dimension is random in regard to how that works.

And, further, I wonder about the possibility of the dimension being even slightly sentient, and the potential horror that could imply.

The Prison Dimension is an endlessly fascinating concept to me, and the thought of Leo being trapped there, and not getting out when he did…that’s horror, really and truly.

Happiness is something that always lives in you, even when you are sad, confused, angry and any other period of your life. sometimes it depends on our view of the situation and directly on us. Some people don't like rain, but you can be delighted by it and it brings you happiness, some people don't like coffee but you can adore it and a delicious coffee can save your morning and the list is endless.

Why am I writing this? Ahahahaha.

It's better not to think about where to get this happiness and just… live? To be happy when it's happy, sad when it's sad and cry when you feel like it. It's kind of like… Your life.
