A/n: Yay! My first ever finished piece of writing!! I apologize in advance for the quality, I'm still learning how to do this and English is not even my first language. Anyway, enjoy!

Summary: reader has been in the 10th division for the longest time and has developed feelings for capt. Hitsugaya, but she doesn't think it's reciprocated.

Day after day, your affection and unspoken feelings grew heavier as weights on your shoulders. And as much as you loved it, he was still a distant person with frosted feelings. It was his way of being. It started getting tiring. It was beginning to feel like chasing after a train already in movement. Seemingly impossible to catch.

You and the captain of the 10th division were close. Between you two there was a strong bond that could only be explained by all the things you've been through. Having people you love get hurt, being misunderstood or judged in your lifes, fighting and going through hell to protect the ones you care about, scarring your hearts in the process... All these things made you able to understand eachother the way the tall, cold mountains understand the scattered, mellow clouds.

Some time back, you realized you had very strong feelings for him and you worked on subtly making them known. Not only have you been at his side in most battles, but in life in general. Helping him with paperwork, bringing him some snacks when he spent late nights in the 10th division's office or making him some tea when the rainy days made him melancholic. All of these were your way of showing him how much you want to be the one who takes care of him when nobody seems to do so. As days passed, your heart gathered more and more space only for him. And the late evenings of paperwork shifted to deep night hours spent in the office talking about weights of each of your souls, in a manner that other people wouldn't understand. The outsiders of your conversations would think you were only speaking in metaphors, but that was the beautiful way you two got to see through each other's words. Your soul was aching to caress his. Your heart was melting at the sound of his voice and the sight of his eyes. But your mind would always remind you about being appropriate, calling him by rank and giving him the space he needed. Even so... You loved him. You loved Toushirou. And you loved his personality. That cold demeanor with his words full of depth. And his way of frowning, always looking deeply beyond one's speech, as if trying to find the meaning behind their actions.

Even though you knew he cared about you, you couldn't be sure of the extend of his feelings. And so, after a while, you start thinking that perhaps, his affection towards you doesn't reach the point of the one you carry towards him. Maybe it's not the same kind of love, if it even gets to be called that. So in an attempt to release some of the stress in your mind, you turn to Rangiku, who gladly listens to you in the office, while you tell her all you feel. And as she asks you what are you going to do about it, you find yourself thinking about one solution. Because you knew nobody could ever reform the way he shaped your heart, you hesitate a bit before speaking. "You know, captain Hitsugaya will always be my first love. He will come in the first place, before anyone... But maybe, I can find someone and at least move on..."

Little did you know, that while you were talking about maybe asking to be departed in a mission for a while, the captain was right beside the door. With the intention of looking for Matsumoto, he stoped at hearing his name coming from the inside and has been listening from the start. Your conversation hit him like a brick, leaving a shocked, almost alarmed expression on his face. This kind of love... He never considered it. He never thought about the name of the feelings he has for you up until that point. But now that he does, he realizes. If you leave, not only will there be an empty place in his heart. But there will also be nobody who could ever fill it back. He can't let you leave. He has to have you in his life, beside him. He kind of...loves you.

After getting a note from him to meet him back at the office later that night, you hurry there. It was pouring rain. Your mind was all over the place. You two never had a planned meeting, excluding the official ones, where multiple people attended. You ask yourself if it was a coincidence or if Rangiku spoke up behind your back. You're thinking about the worst possible scenarios that could happen. The stress is making your fingers fidgety, and you start playing with the material of your clothes as you get closer.

When you finally reach the door, you take a deep breath before opening it and entering. And there he is. Initially with his back turned to you, leaning his weight on his right hand in a fist, on a table. You only get a glimpse of that view but you find it so beautiful that you wished you could have seen in more than just a second. When he turns around, you stop. His eyes look straight into yours, piercing your heart with the intensity of his gaze. He softly, almost whispering, let's out a "hi, y/n." He looks at your clothes and states "you're soaked".

To that, you just look at him and barely open your mouth to say "I didn't take an umbrella... "

The next couple of minutes were filled by silence. That, and the never-ending sensation that what was about to happen was going to be forever stamped inside your chest. Anxiety was flowing through your veins. Finally he talks.

"Do you want to be departed some place else?"

You look at him in disbelief. What? How...?

"..Matsumoto.. ", you say as anger starts creeping up the back of your neck.

Toushirou cuts you off. "No. Not this time. I happened to overhear you."

Now there's embarrassment that's showing through your cheeks and ears. You look down and start asking yourself how much did he hear and where was this going. After hearing a serious, aggravated "well?" ,you look back to him to see his frowned face staring at you.

"I'm... Not sure yet. I might." You say, not ready yet to make that decision.

His frown deepens as he sinks into thinking. Looking as if he debates whether to say something or not, he opens and closes his mouth a few times. Finally, after closing his eyes to take a deep breath, he starts walking towards you as he speaks, taking a step forward with every word.

"Look. I heard it...I know."

He takes one more step so close in front of you, that you're centimetres apart now, not breaking the visual contact for a second.

"And I... Don't want you to move on"

And he softly places his left hand on your cheek, barely touching it, to caress your skin. You slightly part your lips and widen your eyes from the surprise and the feeling of his fingers on you sends hot waves through your entire body. Breathing feels like a hard task in this moment and all your thoughts are gone. All there is, is just the feeling of barely feeling his hand and your body longing for more of his touch. He slowly pushes one step further. His body is now slightly touching yours and his right hand rises to your back. He leans in, and gently closes the gap between his lips and yours. Your whole body tingles, and you put your hands around his neck, pulling him in a little more. The delicate way he kisses you, like he's worried you'll shatter like glass if he comes too close, is making you want more of it. He takes his left hand away from your face with the right one grabs your back tighter, pulling you in, without breaking the softness of the kiss. Soon, you find out he used his left for support, and his right hand to hold you tight while he slowly takes one step further, pushing on you with his body, and leaning your back over the couch. He breaks the kiss for a second, while he holds you, to look at you. The sensation lingers on your lips for a moment, and you look at him too. And even though he has a serious and determined face, with his signature frown, his eyes are so soft looking at you like you were the meaning of life, and the light from the stars. You could hear hardly distinguish his faint, shaky breath from your own.

His gaze shifts into one of almost worry as he opens his mouth only to whisper barely audible "I need you."

You take this moment to whisper to him "now I know".

Like a weight has dropped off his shoulders, he sighs, relief making it's way on his face,his gaze softening. He smiles at you. Then, almost as a thought has just crossed his mind, he furrows his eyebrows, and opens his mouth. But you already knew what his worry was.

"We can take it slow for now." You say, a warm smile painted on your face. To that, Toushirou just smiles back and hugs you.

You two end up falling asleep on the couch, cuddling. You were right. What happened tonight was going to be forever stamped on your heart.

Long time no post, but here's a post of a fanfic originally finished near new years... technically earlier, and then didn't like something and changed it which took. About a month and a half to get around too... and then promptly continued to dilly-dally in taking photos and posting it (I've also got another book I've bound that I finished in the early summer that I, uh... Still have procrastinated in posting. I do intend to do a yearly recap as well for my bindery fingers crossed as soon as I get the other one posted).

I personally fell in love with this Ginroki x Hijikata fic as I adored the writing style of the author since it is so incredibly beautifully and poetically written. I actually had a conversation with the author about the bookbind, which is why it was higher on the priority list (and since it was easily themed and shorter) but since I had first contacted them the fic had been instead switched to anonymous. As a result, I had to change some typesetting to represent the change, but nevertheless, thank you to the author for letting the fic stay up and a gentle reminder that choosing to orphan, rather than delete fics you don't want associated with you anymore is always an option!

"Well, i can answer for you," you mumbled, taking a step off your stool as you tucked your hand to the back of his head, you guided him by the hair down towards you. With heavy lidded eyes, and parted lips; Your lips were a ghost apart. Touching, but not kissing. You could sense the anticipation radiating off of him.

"Or maybe not," you smile, as you pull away, turning your body back towards the bar and holding your hand up for the waiter.

"What the hell." God he could use a cigarette right about now.

"I'm sorry, what's the matter?" you finally turn back to reply after ordering another drink, shifting your focus onto him.

"What the hell was that?! Why did you– just stand there. . ."

Mostly because that Canon toshiro always worked hard even when he was on the third seat, and possibly he regularly trains and the fact that he would be a chill guy, and enji being the one who normally initiates the deed because toshiro is too focused on work or the the interaction of enji having to stop toshiro from overworking and relief himself, idk in my head it would be interesting because of the size difference too and the fire and ice

Toshirou was like... a kid for all of Bleach, so the mental image I have of him is not conductive to imagining him in a relationship with Adult People, if you know what I mean.

But also, two workaholics in a relationship? They are just going to be talking shop all day - when will the romance ever happen??? (Okay, tbh, I don't know toshiro's character growth in the Quincy arc because I dropped Bleach after Fullbringer.)

IMO, the way to make Enji a not terrible parent is by sticking him with a guy who makes an even WORSE parent (and person). Like Gojo. Or Ichimaru.

“That she wished for.” Kensei kept his voice calm as he read the expression of the opposite captain “You're angry, I can understand, but I’m more frustrated than you.”

“At least she’s more careful than Mashiro.” He sighed, there was one thing that freed him from worrying “she won’t risk her life for missions.”

Hijikata Toshirou x reader scenario

It's super rare for you and your husband to come home at the same time. So imagine your surprise when you return home from crazy day at work, about to unlock the front door, to see him walking up the stairs to your shared apartment together. He seems exhausted.

"Oh? Hey there." He leans down to give you a kiss on the head.

"You're home early, toshi. Did something happen? " You unlocked the door, and you both walked inside.

"No. Kondo-san just made me home early after an raid we did today."

"Thank God for Kondo-san. You're not hurt, are you?" You lead him to the couch and sit there with him, check him for any wounds.

"Outside of the assassination attempt on my life by sougo, I'm fine. Just exhausted. Want to sleep. You?"

"Honesty? I feel the same. Having to deal with those annoying people at work and the stuck up customers drained me mentally and physically. " you collapse onto Hijikata's chest, wrapping your arms around his neck. He responded to this by warms his arms around your waist.

"So the plan is to just lay here snuggling each other til we pass out?" You nozzle your head deeper into his chest as a answer. "With some kisses too please."

He giggles hearing that from you, knowing you were going to say that. Hence why he happily but slowly places gently kiss wherever he can on you. Wouldn't stop til he felt you sleeping on him and places one more before falling asleep himself.

(Alright. Back to being a "nerd x weeb".

In February, after watching Puss in Boots 2, I said that was my favourite anime movie.

on my b-day In August, after watching Mutant Mayhem, I said that was now my favourite anime movie. (I still can't get over with how they got away with referencing a real anime)

But after rewatching the RotTMNT movie, I realised I had actually already found my favourite anime movie a year ago.

Yea. This is my favourite anime movie. (until it is somehow dethroned, that is)

So. Confession: Back in August of last year, I actually watched the movie first in the Japanese dub. And right after that, I bugged my friends online about it blasted SONO CHI NO SADAME the rest of the entire day.

And last week (this week?), I watched it again, but on a computer + played SONO CHI NO SADAME during the (climax of the) movie. Basically doubled the weeb energy.

(It makes it look very much like the final battle of Battle Tendency)

And also: Speaking of JoJo, I...uh...also watched the dub credits this time like a hopeless weeb, and...okay this is a bit crazy...

→ They got Muhammad Avdol's VA to voice Raphael (Kenta Miyake 三宅健太) [That's also All Might's VA. I thought Raph's voice was Hijikata Toshirou's at first listen]

→ They got Jonathan Joestar's VA to voice Donatello (Kazuyuki Okitsu 興津和幸) [Very surprising to me, but I could hear it in some lines]

→ And they got Okuyasu Nijimura's VA to voice Splinter (Wataru Takagi 高木渉) [That was very obvious to me, because he used the Daffy voice]

Leonardo is voiced by Jun Fukuyama 福山潤, who is a super famous VA in the industry, but I don't think he has voiced any JoJo so far. I also could not realise his voice, because all the roles I know him from have..."irregular voices" (e.g. Panda from Shirokuma Café who has a "cutesy" voice; Koro-sensei from Assassination Classroom who has a...weird voice; Joker from P5 who doesn't speak at all) (sorry I haven't watched 7DS so I don't know how King sounds like)

There may be other JoJo cast in the movie, but somehow the credit scene only shows the VA for the protagonists.)

For one, Miles' voice is Giorno's. Sadly the Netflix version of Into the Spiderverse does not have the Japanese dub (in my region at least)

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 166 Part 1

Episode Title: Two Is Better Than One. Two People Are Better Than One (the Sunrise staff really hammering it in with that title: we get it, Gintoki and Hijikata are better together than alone...no need to repeat the title twice. Lmao)

MY 100 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 166 (no manga equivalent):

BLESS THE ANIME STAFF FOR THIS EPISODE!!!! Ok, this is the RIGHT way to go rogue from the manga! Omg, whoever thought of this episode and approved of it and created it, BLESS THEM, I want to kiss them, I love them forever. I didn’t quite have 100 fave moments, just like, close to HALF of that, so I had to split this episode into two posts. I know, I went overboard, I don’t care. I love this episode so much and since there was no manga equivalent, this is the only chance I’ll have to worship it. So if you’re not into Gintoki/Hijikata (or Hijikata/Gintoki) in the way that I am, I advise you to just skip this post and part 2 because you’re going to be very nauseated by my fangirling. You have been warned. Proceed at your own risk. 

1) Things started out innocuous enough: just another stake-out ep involving Hijikata and Okita this time, with Sougo clearly hard at work.

2) And then this happened and I probably screamed a little in excitement first time I watched this, but just a little only cuz I would’ve had no idea how glorious the episode would turn out to be.

3) Gin-chan seemed like some angry wife trying to pick a fight with his husband.

4) Of course I got a little more happy by this point at how Gintoki couldn’t seem to leave Toshi alone and even got a little handsy with him.

5) Gintoki obviously just wanted to get like REALLY close to Hijikata.

6) It is seriously a crime against humanity that they didn’t just kiss in this moment.

7) Out of context, this was very suggestive.

8) HIjikata slammed him against the wall. I’ve seen this scenario happen in GinHiji doujins...which usually ended in the same sexy way.

9) At this point I just thought this development was rather amusing, no big deal, Gintoki was pretty much asking to be arrested anyway...

10) ...and then THIS happened and I was like OMG NO FUCKING WAY cuz really, what is the LOGIC of Hijikata handcuffing himself to Gintoki?? I mean, in normal police situations, wouldn’t he be handcuffing BOTH of Gintoki’s OWN hands, or like handcuffing him to a nearby pipe or some other fixture? It made absolutely no sense that he would instead handcuff his suspect to himself but I LOVED IT SO DAMN MUCH THAT HE DID IT.

11) I just about lost what little mind I had left right about here. 

12) BLESS THIS MAN. I love Sougo SO MUCH. Obviously he ships GinHiji as much as I do.

13) He even tripped the two of them so that they would land together all cute like on the ground.

14) I absolutely believe Okita meant for Hijikata to use that as lube. NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.

15) Look at them...anyone walking by at that moment would think the two of them were up to something kinky in the alley.

16) I just like the fact that Hijikata thinks of Gintoki as master of anything of him.

17) Wonder which particular throbby vein was he referring to on Hijikata? Lololol.

24) Ok, I’m actually amazed I noticed this since you’d think my attention would be totally focused on Gintoki and Hijikata but the anime staff weirdly reused some characters in the background as the two of them were walking down the street: the two whispering women, the bald old man, and then the couple. What’s even weirder is that they changed the clothing on the bald old man and the couple, but not whispering women. It’s like they purposefully looped the background but noticeably poorly just to see if we were paying attention.

25) I probably had to be committed from all the squealing I did but obviously I have no memory of my time in the asylum cuz they lobotomized me to calm me down.

Five Key HijiTae Moments

I’ve been shipping Hijikata x Tae /土妙 since 2007, and as self-proclaimed captain of this ship, I’ve sailed without expecting a canon ending. Indeed, I expected nothing more beyond the Yagyuu arc, but Sorachi gave me even more moments to be thankful for - five of which are compiled in this post as a final send-off.  

Before I begin, I wish to convey my gratitude to @arirna​, who is the chief officer of the HijiTae ship, as well as the Tsukuyo to my Tae, our ladies whom we adore so much. I’ve much enjoyed all our numerous discussions on many topics. You make great gifs (thanks for granting my requests! And for allowing me to use and link them in this post because I couldn’t figure out how to embed just one gif from a single post, woe is me), and you’ve long been a staunch supporter of the ship. I will never be able to thank you enough, my friend!

Now then, to the Moments:

I’ve written a summarized analysis of HijiTae and why I like them as a ship before, along with brief mention of other viable Tae and Hijikata ships heavily implied in canon (Kondou, Kyuubei, Mitsuba), so I’m not going to get into them for this post, which is purely to celebrate each HijiTae moment, counting down to what I feel is the most important one.

(5) Episode 18, the “Underwear Thief”

“Dismember him and stomp him into the ground.”

“Hey! Both of you are getting very scary!”

Hijikata and Okita are not present in the original manga story arc, but they are added to the anime (no doubt to appeal to audiences with their growing popularity at the time). This is the first instance that made me see the appeal of their potential relationship, as well as the potential friendship that can result from their rare interactions. Early on in the series, I had no particular ships in mind until I watched this episode. Hijikata and Tae start talking about the best ways to torture somebody, and they eventually get so out of hand with their discussion, complete with shoujo anime bubbles and all, that Shinpachi breaks them up because they are too terrifying together. And, indeed, they would be the most terrifying couple in the country.

(4) Character Poll Arc

“As long as you are around, Shinsengumi, including Kondou-san, won’t be able to stand alone at the top.”

“So you intend to eliminate the woman who is the source of your boss’ scandalous behaviour? I would expect no less from the Demon Vice-Chief. You’re used to doing dirty work.”

Dashing the Fourth Wall to pieces, this arc addresses the original concepts behind some of the characters, particularly those that are based on real historical figures. When Tae rallies Kyuubei, Kagura, Tsukuyo, and Sacchan together to stand against the men, Hijikata and Katsura soon accost them – one to Tae and the other to Kyuubei, and both line-ups make the best sense for each character. Katsura and Kyuubei bicker over their shared characteristics, and they also know each other better since Katsura was once invited to Kyuubei’s birthday party. Tae also knows Katsura, but she’s very familiar to the Shinsengumi for obvious reasons. Hijikata and Tae facing off allows Kondou to seamlessly return to the scene, since he has closer ties to Hijikata and Tae. 

What I enjoy about this interaction is the way Tae is fearless around Hijikata; his demon nickname and reputation don’t intimidate her. She knows just how to push his buttons, too, teasing him about his voice actor and how historians have a bone to pick with such brazen depictions of famed samurai. As for Hijikata, he reveals that he knows just how much of a powerful force she is, wielding great influence over the Shinsengumi, impacting their reputation with their commander under her thumb.

This interaction shows the potential for fun bantering and bickering between them. They don’t hesitate to challenge one another, and as we see in the top two moments below, they also don’t hesitate to support or defend one another/what’s important to them for the other’s sake.

(3) Timeskip Arc

“Please, for our child’s sake, we have to run away! To a world without gorillas!”

“Did you think something like this would fool me? Give me the kid and scram. I’ll look after him.”

Never in my wildest imagination did I think Sorachi would give us a canon child for this ship. Togoro is the hypothetical son of Hijikata and Tae in an otherwise hilarious farce of a story arc. Tae is noted to be pregnant and married to Kondou, and then gives birth within an hour to a baby whose father is revealed to be Hijikata. She wants to run off with him and raise their child together. Hijikata refuses, saying he will raise the child as a single father. And then he proceeds to name the child (as a fifteenth son and as a combination of his and Tamegoro’s names) and begs Shinpachi to let Togoro live.

Some people say Tae’s ambition was to have a child with Hijikata. To me, it’s more like she envisioned a soap opera plot line, typical of the drama series she watches, especially since when she and Hijikata first talk in the Yagyuu arc, she imagined Kondou and Hijikata vying for her affections in true theatrical style. She could have had that baby with somebody else, but once again, Hijikata is in the mix, and probably made for a more dramatic soap opera story line of a woman caught between the police chief and his deputy.

As for Hijikata’s ambition, well, it’s a little hard to say since he and Shinpachi were the stand-in for the audience, trying to unravel this mystery of a wart-infused world only to find that they had become warts themselves. At least we see that Hijikata, once confronted with the possibility of fatherhood, was willing to take responsibility. He’s not explicitly interested in Tae as a romantic prospect, and I don’t expect it since Sorachi would and should have written obvious interest (something that people can’t deny) between them right from the start, so that it would make sense later.

But, it doesn’t change the fact that Togoro is Hijikata and Tae’s hypothetical son and theirs alone, warts and all.

(2) Farewell Shinsengumi Arc

“If you really do want to drink, I don’t mind spending a while with you.”

“If you poured it for me with that face, I wouldn’t be able to drink it.”

There are few moments that have triggered Hijikata into fierce emotional reaction. He has shed tears for Mitsuba, the Shinsengumi’s disbandment and Kondou’s arrest, and Kondou’s revival. He’s gotten angry on behalf of not only Kondou, but also Tetsunosuke for what Isaburou was doing and saying to him. Hijikata is short-tempered, most of the time for comedic purposes, and he’s endured many ordeals in his young life, so it takes a lot to push him over the edge into true sorrow and true rage.

Nobu Nobu cuts the neck (actually does cut it in the manga) of a teary-eyed Tae, who defended Kondou and his reputation. She knows she could easily lose her life for going against the Shogun. That was the reason Hijikata had held back on doing or saying anything. Perhaps he feared anything he might do would advance Kondou’s execution, threaten the remaining Shinsengumi, and further endanger civilians’ lives. Feeling he could do nothing, he stood there, taking the shame and the mockery from both Isaburou and Nobu Nobu – that is, until Tae’s life is threatened. And, finally, Hijikata reacts with a terrifying gleam of rage in his eyes.

This is the kind of trope that comes standard with any kind of ship, romantic or platonic, when someone shows great concern and fury for another being threatened. If this were another series, people would be proclaiming “canon” all over the place, but in this fandom, very few acknowledge this scene, and they skip over to other parts instead. But that doesn’t make Hijikata or Tae’s acts insignificant.

As for Tae, we’ve seen her shed tears of sorrow for Kyuubei, for Hajime, and now for Kondou. While it has taken many chapters to reach this point, it’s clear she respects and believes him to be a good man. Standing up to a tyrannical shogun at this point in the story could mean immediate execution. Tae risked her life to defend Kondou, to stand up for what she believed in, and it did not go unnoticed. We know how devoted Hijikata is to Kondou, how his arrest left Hijikata in such a broken state of mind, but Tae’s defense and life-threatening moment sparked something once more; the catalyst needed for when the rest of the Shinsengumi reignited that fire within.

Of course, it could have been anyone else, and Hijikata would have done his best to ensure no civilians are harmed. But he wasn’t able to move or act during that time of mockery by his enemies. He said and felt he couldn’t do anything at all with Kondou gone. But I think hearing Tae’s impassioned speech, sharing in her belief that Kondou would never conduct himself so shamefully, inspired him to act. He knows Tae is important to Kondou, and I like to think Tae is important enough to Hijikata as a comrade, as a friend—and the potential for more is what fans love about this scene.

Kozenigata did call the Shinsengumi, “her police,” and that includes Hijikata. It’s why she played a role in the Farewell Shinsengumi arc, and in the Silver Soul arc, she welcomed them back home to Edo. The Shinsengumi admire, fear, and respect Tae, and so her police they remain.  

(1) Yagyuu Arc

“I…am the worst, aren’t I? In the end…going off on my own…I got other people hurt because of it. Causing trouble for Kyuu-chan…and for everyone else. Even though I couldn’t see it through until the very end, I did it with such half-hearted conviction… What I did in the end wasn’t for anyone’s sake.”

“You’re not a Buddha. Did you think you could save everyone in front of you? No matter how many bones you break trying, there are things you can save and things you can’t. So what? Is your way of life so fragile that it would break with this? Now, if there was someone who could be saved by your so-called half-hearted kindness…what would you do?”

This is the official first HijiTae moment within Sorachi’s manga canon: the Yagyuu arc launched two new Tae ships. You’d think the previous moment would be the culmination of everything, but it is the beginning that I find the most important because it shows that Hijikata and Tae are capable of civil conversation and speaking to one another as equals.

We first start out with a comedic exchange in which Tae thinks Hijikata has come to battle for her heart against Kondou, followed by a brief banter of which drama series best suits Kondou and Tae’s imaginary tales. But the point of his visit is to convince Tae to marry Kondou just to help him avoid marrying a gorilla. He earns bonus points for saying that “No means no” when a woman declines.

Later, after the main events of the arc, Tae invites everyone back to Snack Smile to apologize to them, but they’re present at Kondou’s wedding. Only Hijikata goes, and I think he went back because he knows Tae has a good heart. He doesn’t ask her specifically to marry Kondou again, but he listens to her outpouring of feelings over the situation. He then gives practical advice, and in a roundabout way, asks if she will consider just saving Kondou from his wedding at least. And Tae does.

What I love about this arc is their conversations – from casual and fun to serious and thought-provoking – and it didn’t take them hundreds of chapters to reach that point. They arrived there easily and naturally. This quiet moment of introspection they share was more than enough for me to solidify my love for them, and that fondness for the HijiTae ship has continued on for almost twelve years.

BONUS: Soul Switch Arc

A bonus only because it doesn’t strictly involve the two of them alone.

People often forget that Tae only blushed after Hijikata-in-Gintoki’s-body flirted with her. She was charmed by Hijikata’s way of flirting, which was very genteel and sincere and a bit impassioned, much like the way he wrote Shinpachi’s letter for Kirara. When Gintoki-in-Hijikata’s body attempted his usual way of flirting, Tae was unimpressed, aside from being skeptical that Hijikata would truly proposition her. However, once she took it as truth, she was more than willing to consider him a prospect.

In my opinion, Gintoki on his own really doesn’t do anything for Tae since the only moments she was romantically attracted to him was when he lost his memories and original personality, and when he was actually Hijikata. She has also mentioned desiring a partner with a stable income, and I can see someone more traditional, not to mention stricter in handling one’s responsibilities, fitting in better with her lifestyle (hence why Kondou and Kyuubei are the other commonly teased ships), whereas Gintoki is more unconventional about life, going at his own pace. Tae always bases her life around goals and working toward them; she’s not the type to sit around, doing nothing, waiting only to welcome people home when she has a life and dream of her own, too.

There are some other minor interactions (not to mention that Otose and Tatsugoro parallel), but these five are the most important and relevant. 

And there you have it. This is a summary of why I enjoy the Hijikata x Tae ship so much. They are both people who hold fast to their convictions, and who do their best to be strong for others’ sake, both leading, respectively, a district and a military police force. They are capable of comedic and civil conversations with one another; prone to bickering but also fighting for one another’s cause based on what they feel is right. At the very least, they remain friends and comrades in the end.

Nothing changes what Sorachi wrote about and for them. It was all his decision, not mine, and if others can celebrate moments for their ship, then there’s no reason I can’t, either. All the negative arguments people throw at me, I have addressed before, so I will not waste time doing so again. I’m not obligated to respond or justify a fictional ship to strangers on the Internet at their demand. Fandom is not a monolith required to bend to a single person’s will, and liking one ship doesn’t cause the erasure of others (that line of reasoning is beyond ridiculous). If you don’t like the ship, the simplest thing is to move on with your life and forget the ship exists.

1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?

There were some k-pop ships I used to ship but as time went by I just stopped. Maybe because I’m not as much into k-pop as I used to be.

I also don’t ship any of Hetalia’s characters anymore.

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

Stella and Brandon from Winx Club or Kevin and Gewn from Ben 10: Alien Force. That was even before I was aware of what shipping was.

While I was aware, I think it was Shizaya? Durarara was one of the first animes I watched. And Heiwajima Shizuo and Orihara Izaya's love-hate relationship was so good for a 12-year-old me.

Or it could be SasuNaru…

3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

Written it was Merciless. 

But read? That was so long time ago...

I remember I found some Ben 10 stories on the Internet and I read a lot of them as a kid.

But when I read and I was aware I was reading fanfics it was most likely SasuNaru or Darry. It was most likely still on Wattpad or fanfiction.net. On or those self-publishing blogs. Those were popular back then.

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

Probably SasuNaru. Or another ship that was popular at the beginning of the 2010s.

5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?

I try not to. I mostly believe that fiction is fiction and when I don't like something I just don't read it.

I like to read people's points of view though.

Not sure... There were some ships that I wasn't aware of age. I don't mind ships with big age differences but I like for both parties to be over 18.

So maybe as an example Levi x Eren? Eren was 15 and now looking back I'm not sure if I would ship it.

Tried to think of something but my head is empty. I don't believe I don't have any crack ships!

It's nearly midnight. Lights out had already been called for the Shinsengumi, but the Commander and Vice Commander are still toiling away in their private quarters. Hijikata inspects one of the papers in his hands, scanning over its contents.

"Kondo-san," he starts, glancing over his shoulder to his Commander. "Can you give me more details on what happened in this report?"

Kondo gulps, not expecting to have to actually think . He didn't think he needed to, given the task Hijikata gave him in exchange for his help in completing a huge backlog of paperwork.

Kondo was made to sit at the desk and act as Hijikata's personal seat. The fabric of Hijikata's yukata was bunched up around his thighs and draped over Kondo's lap. Hijikata's bare ass pressed against Kondo, and he was instructed to keep his hands on Hijikata's slim waist at all times. "By the way, you made an error in the date for this one. You wrote April 13th wrong. There is no thirteenth month." A minor detail Hijikata absolutely did not need to bring up. "You should be more careful next time, Commander ." He said, his hips circling on Kondo's lap.

Kondo groaned against Hijikata's shoulder. It's tormenting to have Hijikata be just shy of riding him, and be forced to have to use his brain at the same time. The words on the page almost looked like they're scattered away from each other as Hijikata continued to press against him for answers.

" Kondo-san? " Hijikata prompted him again, his voice low and just the slightest bit gravelly. As if he could graze the skin on Kondo's face with his words alone.

" Toshi..! " Kondo grunted, bucking his hips into Hijikata. He couldn't take the agony anymore, giving into his own desires. His nails sank into Hijikata's skin and he pulled him close, desperate to get as deep inside him as possible.

The papers fell from Hijikata's hands when he's shocked by Kondo's length, boring deep inside him. He reached over and grabbed his hair again, but the pulling only riled Kondo up even further. Kondo's pace didn't falter, thrusting into Hijikata over and over again, getting drunk off his angry protests and squirming body.

" Kondo-san! " Hijikata cried, trying to writhe himself out of Kondo's grasp. Hijikata's slight panic in his voice sent Kondo's mind into overdrive. Times like this made it difficult for Kondo to remember the way he ruled the Shinsengumi with an iron fist, being so tame on his lap.

As if a switch had flipped, Hijikata jolted up and slapped Kondo across the chest. “Why did you do that?” he demanded. And just like that, the Demon Vice Commander had returned.

Kondo looked down guiltily at being interrogated for his loss of self restraint. “W-well.. You see…” He started, unsure of how to continue without getting slapped again.

“ Well? ” Hijikata prompted.

“Uh… It was an accident?” Kondo grinned sheepishly, hoping that Hijikata’s soft spot would be easier to hit after he’d been thoroughly loosened up.

Hijikata glared down at him, scrunching up his nose in contempt. He looked over his shoulder at the neglected paperwork. “You put us behind schedule!” he griped, completely ignoring how he was the one who chose to drag it out until he was satisfied. “We said we were going to finish at least half of these by tonight. We need to do at least fifteen more!”

“Wait, we’re going to do more!?” Kondo asked, shocked that Hijikata even had enough energy to continue.

“Of course we are.” Hijikata replied, filled with resolve as he got off him, properly dressing himself. “I’m getting cleaned up. You should wash up too, but don’t follow me. I don’t want you to have any more accidents in the bathroom. We share that with other people.” he finished curtly, as if he wasn’t wailing loud enough to wake the whole of Edo moments prior.

Kondo relented, not even trying to argue. “Should I move the papers down then?” he offered, assuming that they would move their work to the floor to prevent any more accidents .

“No need.” Hijikata dismissed him, already making his way to the door.

“So I have to sit on the floor?” Kondo asked, already anticipating the shame he’d be subjected to.

“No.” Hijikata paused to glance back at him from the doorway. “We agreed for you to stay that way the entire time didn’t we?” he finished, walking away to the bathroom, leaving an already drained Kondo in the room alone to process what he just heard.

Kondo had a feeling he’d have to bum a cigarette from Hijikata soon.
