#i think having the chorus pantomime the sacrifice of iphigenia has become pretty common for modern productions of agamemnon #(i don't think the ancient chorus would have done this btw)#but drawing the iphigenia-figure from the audience.......#WAY to implicate the audience in the performance!#i think i'm interested rn in ways of making the audience complicit rather than under (potential) threat #but this tracks with what i've been reading about blurred/absent boundaries between stage and audience #and the way the performance can reach out and entangle or endanger the audience #i'm also curious about the ways the audience can (or can but does not) reach in to the performance #its also super interesting to have this moment of implicating the audience be so early in the play #i've seen several moments at [redacted theater] that break the illusion of audience detachment but they're usually later in the play #like just when the audience is comfortable being safe and removed-- boom house lights up. or actor enters from behind the seating.#mine #bodycostume #<-the tags i guess #oresteiablogging

Thinking about how when Angela introduces herself to Mike in 4x02, not only are Mike and El sitting on the same side but they're also then able to have some close shots with shared looks when she's talking.

This stops as soon as they fight. Hm. So it was romantic...

Tracking back Mike and Will's shared looks, actually, Mike and Will have lots in season 2, but then in 3x01 Mike and El look at each other instead when all three find out about Dustin's girlfriend. But as soon as they break up and she expressed disinterest in getting back together, it's back to Mike and Will by the end of that same episode 3x04 and continues on like that in looks and blocking for the rest of the season. In season 4, Mike is framed with El and has that single scene of shared looks with her, but once she even just physically leaves, Mike and Will have theirs again. From their fight on, Mike and Will have them, including when she's present before they've officially made up.

It seems small but they're communicating something, and it may be a stretch, but I think we can extrapolate some of his self awareness and intention from this symbolically. Every time he thought they were not going to get back/stay together that closeness and intimacy of silent consultation switched back to Will. But it stayed on Will in the epilogue. Just like their screentime, his feelings existed independently and contradictory to him, but he's aware of them now and he keeps them. So in the hospital, he shares a look with El in a wider shot because they are close again - together - but he has a close up shared look with Will because they are more so, and this time those feelings and inclinations towards even little things like that persist through his relationship with El continuing.
