Trans headcanon (though I guess it could apply to non-trans headcanons too): the reason Amy's quills changed from the normal hedgehog style we see her with in the classic games to her "bob" style in the modern games is because when she started living alone in Station Square and experimenting with gender, she tried finding inspiration on how to present more femininely and tried changing her appearance based off that.

But why the bob? Why something so strange for a hedgehog? Well, Amy lived alone in a human city, with no known hedgehogs around aside from Sonic visiting on occasion, and we never saw her with peers her age or family. She probably styled herself after the most consistent beauty standard she could find in Station Square: human woman. Her bob-quills could be her trying to mimic a human hairstyle that she sees as particularly feminine, because she didn't really know anybody else to base her appearance off of.

Makes you wonder if she'd go for a more traditional hedgehog style if she grew up around non-humans.
