....I need you to break down which Game of Rassilon characters would survive Dracula now please.

ah fuck okay, here we go. going by @canyourfavesurvivecastledracula's set of critera at the top of the blog...

Riley!Doctor - Wouldn't take the crucifix because she's already got several spare ones in her pockets, somewhere, maybe, she'll go looking for them later. Of course she's sneaking around and getting nosy. It's what she does. Holds Dracula's attention well enough until he says something really blatantly evil, and then she promptly snaps and ruins everything and turns the whole deal into a survival horror game. Finds a rusting sword somewhere and beats the three vampire gfs back with it. Uses her scarf to rappel her way down the side of the castle, and uses a combination of Venusian Akido and clever sonic screwdriver technobabble to disrupt the vampiric influence on the wolves. She's the Doctor. She'll be fine.

Millie - the real-life Amelia Earhart was somewhat religious, so I can easily see her taking the crucifix if offered. Talking and climbing aren't what's going to save her here. Her greatest strength is piloting and repurposing things. In the absense of a plane or spaceship, she might very well hijack the carriage Dracula drove in on. 50/50 chance of her managing to pull this off.

Travis Killian - Travis's greatest strength lies in his ability to fuck with technology, and unfortunately castle Dracula is not wi-fi enabled. He's genre-savvy enough and probably knows enough vampire lore to get a good grasp on what's going on, but that's not going to save him. I don't doubt his ability to survive a few terrifying conversations with the Count, but I do doubt his ability to climb down a ladder, let alone a massive castle wall. Probably going to die without assistance, let's hope he asks for help.

Roman - Roman would try to shoot Dracula several times and miss, every time; but that only happens at the climax of this little disaster. Vampires and Time Lords are natural enemies, so he'd have a pretty good idea what's going on from the start. Being left in a creepy old building owned by a malicious entity that wants him to suffer and lose his mind is kind of already Roman's thing, so he gets bonus points for that. Roman can absolutely talk his way around Dracula and in fact I'd pay actual money to see those conversations. When things inevitably go to shit and he has to run like hell, the aforementioned bad Marksman score kicks in. He fails to even so much as wound Dracula, and probably isn't remotely equipped to climb down the castle walls. The wolves probably get him. Sorry, Roman. He dies, but don't worry, it's all part of the plan.

Carrie Vu - after ascertaining that someone really weird is going on in the town, would turn up at Castle Dracula's front doors and offer him girl scout cookies that she doesn't own in order to sneak in and snoop around. Dracula would not be fooled but would let her in anyway. Every conversation between Carrie and Dracula is the equivalent of getting beat around the head with a rubber chicken. There's no way to predict how any of this will go. Dracula is too bemused and off-balance to contemplate killing her at first. Gets very very offended when he calls her iPhone a foul bauble of man's vanity. Would manage to get at least one good whack in with her baseball bat. The vampire GFs do eventually get her and things look hopeless, but the Corsair swings in at the last moment to rescue her, and the resulting scene is like something off the front cover of a horny romance novel.

Dan!Doctor - Would take the crucifix, insist on paying or giving something back, comedic 5-minute sequence of him pulling random currency and bizarre items out of his pockets. Solemnly promises to do something about the babies getting stolen and eaten, and this is his entire life goal for the next few weeks. Probably manages Dracula marginally better than Riley!Doctor, can keep up and hold a conversation while carefully plotting his exit route. Locates every coffin and regretfully destroys them. Very thoroughly makes sure that no part of Dracula's cunning real estate plan will ever come to pass. Escapes Castle Dracula by jumping out a window because climbing is too slow. He's good at falling off things, he'll be fine probably.

Lita Fane - Lita's wary enough that I have serious doubts she'd even go up to the castle in the first place unless coerced or forced into it. She feels much more like the person to stay down in the town and try to help the people living there. Assuming she has to go to the castle anyway - I don't know if the crucifix would be even recognizable to her as an important item, so she'd probably just be really confused about it, might take it just to be polite. Engineering skills aren't really helpful to her here. I don't think she'd be great at talking to the Count, either. Dracula sets off every red flag possible for her - Lita's having a bad time. It doesn't feel like she'd be an especially great climber, either. Lita's a survivor, but probably not in this case. Vampires were never really the thing she learned how to survive.

Stanley Campbell - Oh, god. Sorry, but there's just no way Stanley would notice that Dracula is even remotely a vampire until it's way WAY too late. 50/50 on him taking the crucifix but I'm thinking maaaybe not. He'd probably end up wandering. Dracula would lose interest in his tangents very very fast. He ain't climbing his way out, with OR without crocs. One way or another, he's not moseying his way out of this one.

bonus: Joseph!Doctor - a stick is just a stake that hasn't been sharpened yet. Dracula's going down.

Pre-production revealed!

Since the project is finally finished, I thought people might like to see the reference materials given to all of the participants!

Because TAZ is a podcast with no visuals and no canonical look for anything, people were allowed to do whatever they wanted with the characters with a few specific exceptions, otherwise we were worried it might become impossible for people to follow the finished video.

Participants were given both a rough animatic to dictate screen direction, and a PDF that had written descriptions of what details absolutely had to be visible in the characters (Taako is an elf and he has a tall wizard hat mentioned in episode, the boys don't have bracers but Brian and Killian do, etc.), descriptions of the settings as given in-episode, the video specs required to be able to put the whole thing together in the end, a heavily edited version of @tazscripts transcript of the episode, and a few other details deemed important at the time. Participants were also given the email addresses of the people whos claimed parts came before and after their own in hopes that people would collaborate to make sure their shots connected well.

The written descriptions in the PDF were decorated with lovely illustrations like these to hopefully simplify the information people had to take in

Originally, the episode was only going to cover the second half post-commercial until the call for animators was reshared by Clint on Twitter at the last minute and enough people signed up that it felt appropriate to do the first part as well, and we are forever grateful because the episode is so much better for it! The Disney Channel-parody for the commercial was also completely Andobiki's idea, it was so exciting that I went digging through later episodes for clean "Davenport" clips specially for that.

Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

My Rating: 5/5

This was so stinking cute! I have never read a coffee shop AU before, and I am happy that this was my first experience with one. This story is so wholesome and, as everyone has said before, downright cozy. Viv's passion for coffee and her desire to share that love with others made me wish that I liked coffee. Every character, except Fennus, was so likeable. Even the ominous Madrigal was such an excellent character to me. I loved wacky Laney and how she shows up to say some weird shit and then peace out. I adored Mr Thimble and would die for his genius pastry inventions. When he hugged Viv's arm, I just about withered away. I loved Durias and his cryptic messages. I guess he's a time bender of sorts, and I honestly would love to know more about him. Cal was one of my favorite characters, and I will forever refer to lattes as milky bean water because of him. 

I loved the subtle romance between Tandri and Viv so so much. Because Tandri is a succubus, there was room for her character to be handled in a not-so-great way, but it was done wonderfully here. I love that it was focused on the 'sensuality of taste', if you will, rather than a sexual thing, and despite Killian trying to make it, it never crossed that line. Tandri was a treat, and she and Viv are just so sweet. I cannot tell you the last time a book made me tear up from how lovely I found the romance. That ending? *chef's kiss* 

A prequel will be written for this, and I cannot wait to read about Viv, possibly Tandri or another character in this universe. I loved the world-building and the explanations of how everything in the coffee shop came together. Every time they got a new addition to their menu, it was so exciting and fun--all the fantasy names for breakfast pastries we see every day were so cute too. Midnight crescents. *cries* 

All in all, I recommend this book if you want a quick, easy read. Something cozy and sweet that might make you cry from just how sweet. 5/5

I Feel It In My Weary Bones (Laura/Max)

Max and Laura reunite the morning after.

There’s no way Laura’s going to let some cops get in between her and Max after everything she’d done to bring him back to her.

Travis drove them back to camp under a jarringly sunny sky. There was a crackle on the radio, other cops requesting back up at Hackett's Quarry. Travis reached forward and switched off his police radio with a click. 

Ryan was sitting in the backseat with his earbuds in, quiet. Laura would have assumed he was asleep, if not for his leg shaking anxiously, and the tension in his jaw. 

“We’re so fucked,” Laura said. “All of us.” 

Tracks looked startled. “We stopped the curse.” 

“I was going to be a vet,” Laura continued. She rested her head against the car window, leaving a smudge of blood from her hair. “Full academic scholarship at Landis.” 

“You’ll go,” Travis said, although he didn’t sound like he quite believed it. 

The rest of the journey was in silence.

“He’s my boyfriend!” Laura insisted. 

The cop, a police sheriff who must be from the next town over, just sighed. He’d clearly been dealing with teenagers all morning and was sick of it. Too bad for him, Laura was determined. 

“Last time I saw him, he was over at the island. I can show you the way. Hell, I’ll even row the boat myself if that’s what it takes.” 

“Listen kid, there’s a lot going on here. I don’t have time to send an officer off on a wild goose chase to find another one of you. How would he even get on the damn island?” 

There’s no way Laura’s going to let some cops get in between her and Max after everything she’d done to bring him back to her. “No, you listen-“ 

“Sir,” Travis’ voice interrupted. He’d gone without suspicion, despite being as blood splattered as Laura and Ryan had been, and had been put to work rounding them all up. “There’s several kids unaccounted for. I suggest we find them before it turns into even more of a bloodbath.” 

The officer looked irritated but gave in. “Fine.” 

“I’m coming with them,” Laura said, as he motioned for two of the younger cops to come over. “Please, he’s my boyfriend and I haven’t seen him all night.” 

“If it’ll shut you up,” he agreed. “Mackenzie, Killian, there’s another kid over at the island. This one will show you the way.” 

Mackenzie and Killian didn’t look thrilled about their new assignment but they still followed Laura over to the edge of the lake, where her boat was waiting. 

“What happened to you?” Asked one of them. “You’re covered in blood.” 

“Killian,” the other cop - presumably Mackenzie - hissed. “No questions until they’re at the station.” 

“You’re not curious?” Killian asked. “She’s covered in blood.  They all are. The fuck happened here?" 

Laura tuned it out. She had been trying to forget the blood on her, a mix of her own and the Hacketts, and probably a little of Ryan’s too. She’d lost count at some point in the night. (It wouldn’t look good, all the evidence smeared on her, connecting her to all kinds of crimes.) 

“This port!” She called, recognising the imposing sight of the treehouse in the distance. 

Laura strained her eyes trying to make out any figures in the distance. There was a blur of something pink, which she realised with a laugh was Max. 

Ridiculous, yet alive. 

Laura hopped out the boat as Mackenzie and Killian argued over how best to land it. She waded through the lake, the hem of her borrowed dress wet, waving. 

“Max!” She yelled. 

Max smiled, bracing himself a moment before Laura threw herself at him. He felt solid, comforting, and she was reluctant to let go from the hug. 

“Your eye looks a whole lot better,” he said, running his thumb where the scars had been. “I guess there’s a story there?” 

“Yeah. I’ve had one hell of a night.” 

“Thank you honey,” Max said. “For whatever you did. I knew it couldn’t have been easy.” 

“Hey kid!” It was Mackenzie, finally caught up. “Don’t run off.” 

“I didn’t go far,” Laura argued.

Max reached for her hand. “Friends of yours?” 

“Just our ride back.”

Killian caught up with his partner. He looked at Max in bewilderment. “More fucking blood.” 

“Just get back to the boat,” Mackenzie instructed wearily. “Both of you.” 

They let the two of them sit together. Laura rested her head against Max’s chest as he wrapped a protective arm around her. 

“Why are you wearing my clothes?” 

“This old thing?” Max joked. “Payback, for all the jackets you stole from me.” 

Laura smiled. Despite how uncertain the future looked, at least some things never changed.

Back at the camp, it seemed like the cops had finally rounded up the rest of the counselors. Apart from Ryan, Laura had only met most of them briefly, although there were a few she hadn’t seen at all. 

She nodded at Ryan, who was leaning against the shoulder of one of the guys from earlier. It seemed like he had made up his mind after all. 

“That girl is wearing my clothes,” Max whispered, nodding at a blonde girl who had her arm around Abigail. She was wearing an oversized shirt and had his overalls tied at the waist. “Guess pink wasn’t her colour.” 

Laura laughed, although it was more her nerves than anything. They’d been cuffed when they got off the boat, then taken to the lodge. The adrenaline was wearing off, and reality looked bleak. 

“You okay Hun?” Max asked, but this time his tone was more serious. 

“How do we even explain this?” 

“We’ll figure something out,” Max assured her. 

“Listen up,” the sheriff said, his gruff voice putting an end to all the whispering. “Clearly something happened here tonight. And we are not letting you go until we have a clear story. Now I’ve been told some of you have been mentioning monsters, or bears, or hunters-“ 

“Can we just blame bears?” The guy next to Laura asked quietly. 

“But I want the truth. And I will get it. We’ll be taking you to the next station over at Westkill, and then we will be asking you questions. It’s a long journey, so I expect you to have answers when we arrive.”  

With that, they were led out. A cop was suddenly behind them, a hand on each of their shoulders, as Laura and Max were marched towards the line of cop cars at the edge of the woods. The lights were still on, bright flashes of red and blue.

At least they were together, as they were pushed into the back of one of the cars. Laura scooted into the middle seat, so she could rest her head onto Max’s shoulder. 

“I’d give anything for a shower,” Laura said. 

“You won’t have to wait long.” 

The couple looked up. In the front seat wasn’t just any asshole cop - it was Travis. It was hard to decide if that was a relief or not. 

“Relax, I’m not taking you to Westkill station.” 

“You’re not taking us to your station though?” Max asked. “We don’t want a repeat of your hospitality.” 

“I’ll take you to the Harbriger motel. Got you two a room, left your bags there. Shower, get changed, get out of here.” He continued with his instructions. “There’s a bus station half a mile south from the motel. Pay cash.” 

“Why are you helping us now?” Laura asked, feeling uneasy.

“Because you helped me,” Travis replied.

“And if we tell the cops you had us locked up all summer, it won’t look good for you?” Max said. 

“Both,” Travis admitted. “But you kids don’t want to be locked up again. Officially speaking, there’s no record of you being at Hackett’s Quarry this summer. There were a lot of kids covered in blood to keep track of this morning. If they even notice you’re missing, it’ll be too late.” 

Travis pulled up outside a shabby looking building. The neon sign flickered. He turned to pass two keys to them - the first for a room, the second set smaller, for their handcuffs. Max undid Laura’s first, then his own. 

“Thank you,” Laura said. “But, God, I hope we never see you again.” 

“Likewise ma’am.” They stepped out of the car. Travis drove off, leaving them in the car park. 

“One last ma’am for old times sake,” Max said, mostly to break the silence. 

Laura rolled her eyes. “Like this day couldn’t get worse.” 

“Hey, we get to go home.” 

Laura smiled. “Yeah. Let’s go home.”

re: the 'would [x character] survive castle dracula' thing that i'm endlessly delighted by - i don't know if travis killian would survive the first few chapters of the novel dracula, but count dracula would toss his gameboy out of the window and call it a foul bauble of man's vanity. so he has one less thing going for him there.
