(i just finished daria and have major Trent brain rot… but there’s like no content for him so i guess i have to write it myself :p)

In Jane’s room.

Jane: Trent got a new amp. Sounds like he’s still working out the kinks.

Jane: Let’s go say hi.

Jane: C’mon, Jane said, tugging on Daria’s jacket sleeve

Jane: Yo, Trent! You wanna turn it down a bit?

Jesse: You guys outta come to the Mystik Spiral gig tonight. We’ll put you on the list.

Trent: Yeah. I’ve got someone I’d like to introduce you to—-

Jane interrupted: Noooo that’s okay. Not tonight. Daria and I already have BIG plans.

Daria: Ummm…we do…?

Jane: Yes. BIG plans. Don’t you remember, Daria? Actually, we’ve got to go now. Later.

Jane said tersely as she dragged Daria up the basement stairs.

Trent: Oh ok. Next time 

When they were safely back in Jane’s room, Daria asked: What was that about?

Jane: Oh nothing. I uhhhh just wanted to uhhhh get your thoughts on my newest piece., she said, pointing to an almost blank canvas

Daria: Uh-huh. What’s really going on?

Jane: Damn. Sure can’t get anything past you, can I? 

Daria: What can I say? I’m just too good at reading people.

Jane: Trent has a new girlfriend, and I didn’t want you to know.

Daria: You mean he’s back with Monique?

Jane: No, they really broke up for good that time…

Jane: But you know Trent. It’s probably just some random girl he picked up at a club. I’m sure they’ll be broken up by the end of the week.

Daria, shifting her gaze away from Jane: And uhhhh…what’s she like…?

Jane: Dunno. I haven’t met her yet.

Daria: Uh ok. Maybe I should just go home…

Jane: C’mon Daria. Don’t go. We still have the Sick Sad World marathon tonight.

Daria: I guess I could stay…

Jane: It’ll be fun., Jane said, turning the TV on

The next morning, Daria woke to the unexpected smell of food cooking…? At the Lane’s…?!

Daria: Hey Jane…Jane…

Jane: ….hurgh…?, Jane groaned

Daria: Do you smell that?

All of a sudden, there was a faint tap on the door. Then a familiar voice called out “Janey” as Trent entered the room.

Trent: Janey, there’s breakfast., he said, pausing briefly, “Oh. Hey Daria.”

Daria, after an uncomfortably long pause, mumbled “…Hey” as she reached for her glasses. Her face flushed as Trent’s outline came into focus. 

Jane, pulling her head out of her pillow: …What are you talking about Trent? …And put some damn pants on, we have company.

Trent: Hmmmm? Daria doesn’t mind, do you Daria?, Trent chuckled as he walked out of the room, scratching his stomach. The sound of his coughing faded as he made his way down the stairs.

Jane: Wait. Did he just say breakfast?

Daria was silent.

Jane: Daria…? Hey Daria…? Hmmm…Hey girl with the red face who’s forgotten how to speak.

Daria: Huh?

Jane: Oh nevermind.

Daria: Oh, I—-

Jane: Let’s go investigate this alleged “breakfast.”

As they turned the corner into the kitchen, there she stood. An unfamiliar woman. 

She was tall, curvaceous, and…bursty. In fact, she was almost too bursty for the tight black crop tee she was wearing. She had long auburn hair, green eyes, and a dangly bellybutton ring that stopped just above the top of her denim miniskirt.

Jane: Uhhhh hello there.

Trent: Hey. Janey. Daria. This is my girlfriend Esmeralda. She made breakfast.

Daria frowned. “Girlfriend?” she thought. The word stung like a splash of ice cold water to the face. “Is Trent really dating someone like her?” She didn’t look anything like Monique. Was she really Trent’s type? Just what exactly IS Trent’s type? Her inner dialog was interrupted by the new woman.

Esmeralda: Good morning!, she said cheerfully

Jane: Oh hey

Daria: ummm hello, she muttered quietly

As the girls sat down, Esmeralda said “Sooo Jane, Daria. Trent’s told me a lot about you.” Turning to Jane, she continued “He said you’re quite the talented artist. And you Daria. He said you’re a writer. That’s so cool.”

Jane: I’ve been known to dabble in the occasional oil paint or two.

Daria muttered: “Uhhh yeah”

Trent: Daria, Esmeralda’s like…a writer too. She’s a journalist.

Esmeralda: I just do a bit of freelance work for some magazines.

Trent: In New York City. She’s the real deal.

After another uncomfortably long silence.

Esmeralda: Ummmm I made blueberry pancakes, bacon, and eggs. There’s coffee and orange juice too. What would you like?

Jane: Oh uhhhh. I’ll have the works.

Esmeralda: How do you take your coffee?

Jane: black

Esmeralda: And you Daria?

Daria: Oh uhhhh…I’m not really hungry.

Trent: Have a pancake Daria. They’re good.

Daria: …oh. Ok. I guess I’ll have a pancake. Thanks.

Esmeralda: Coming right up!

Jane: So where did all this food come from?

Trent: Esmé went shopping this morning before she came over

Daria: Esmé?

Esmeralda: Oh, that’s just what Trenty calls me.

Jane: Trenty…?, Jane chuckled 

Jane: So “Trenty,” how did you kids meet?

Trent: We just, ya know, hooked up after the Mystik Spiral gig a few weeks ago.

Esmeralda: I’m doing a piece on metal bands in middle America, so I’ve been going to gigs all summer. And one night I met Trent.

Trent: We started talking after the show and it was just like…meant to be, ya know? She gets me.

Jane noticed the growing look of anguish on Daria’s normally expressionless face as she pushed a sole blueberry around her plate.

Jane: Well, it was nice to meet you. But Daria needs to get home now. She’s got to ummm…

Daria: Help my mom…take Quinn…to the uhh…

Jane: …doctor. They’re putting her down.

Daria: Don’t wanna miss that.

Jane: Bye bye!

Daria: Uhhh bye

Trent: Later

A look of concern washed over Trent’s face as he watched the two exit  the room. “Hmmm” he sighed.

On the walk to Daria’s…

Jane: Don’t look so down. You heard Trent, he said they just hooked up after a show.

Daria: Yeah. I did hear Trent. That’s the problem.  Or did you completely miss the part where he said they’re meant to be?

Jane: Trent barely knows this chick. 

Daria: He knows her well enough to invite her into your house to make breakfast.

Jane: We’re not too particular about who comes into Casa Lane.  Plus it’s early. He’s not really a morning person. He probably didn’t even know what he was saying.

Daria: whatever

Jane: Trent’s a bit ummm idealistic when it comes to dating. He used to say the same stuff about Monique, and we know how that ended.

Daria: I guess you’re right…but she’s so…you know…

Jane: What?

Daria: Just forget it

Jane: Out with it, young lady.

Daria, flustered: She’s all…bouncy. Like Quinn. Is someone like that really Trent’s type? I can’t compete with that.

Jane: Oh. Yeah. She sure wasn’t Trent’s usual type, I’ll give you that. But…It’s not a competition. And besides, girls like that don’t have the brain capacity to be interesting.

Daria: Uh huh

Jane: C’mon Daria. She’s pretty. Men are dumb when it comes to pretty girls. I’m sure they’ll break—-

Daria: If she’s pretty then what does that make me?

Jane: I didn’t mean it like that—-

Daria: …sorry, I know you didn’t. Anyways, thanks for walking me home.

A few days later. On the phone…

Jane: Mystic Spiral has a show tonight, and Trent asked me to see if you’re coming.

Daria: I don’t know…I just don’t really feel like going out…

Jane: Trent thinks you’re avoiding him.

Daria: I AM avoiding him…

Jane: I could sure use the company.

As Trent exited the stage, Esmeralda ran up and kissed him.

Daria: How about a glass of bleach?

Jane: I’ll see what I can rustle up at the bar.

Jane: Here’s a soda.

Jane: Where’d your girl go?

Daria, thinking to herself, “It would have been better if the floor had opened up under the ‘Devil Woman’ and dragged her straight to hell.”

Daria: It was ok

Trent: Hmmm, Trent sighed

Trent: Well, thanks for coming. You haven’t been around much.

Daria: Yeah. I’ve been busy.

Trent: Can’t be helped, I guess then. Well, I’ve gotta help them load the equipment into the Tank.

As he walked past Daria, Trent put his hand on her shoulder and whispered “Give her a chance, Daria.”

Daria: Huh?

Daria turned around, watching Trent disappear backstage.

Jane: What’d he say?

Daria: Oh, nothing.

Jane: Oh no…no secrets, missy.

Daria: He told me to give her a chance.

Jane: Who? Esmeralda?

Daria: I guess so. He didn’t say.

They suddenly felt a hand on each of their shoulders. It was Esmeralda.

Esmeralda: Hey. The band is gonna be here for a while, so I was wondering if you wanted to get some pizza. My treat.

Before Jane could get an excuse out, Daria said “Sure.”

A little while later, at Pizza King.

Esmeralda: Are you sure one pie is gonna be enough?

Jane: Maybe. At least until the band gets here.

Daria: Yeah

Jane: So how does our humble pizza compare to the stuff in New York City?

Esmeralda: It’s cheesy. It’s greasy. It’s good.

Daria: So what are you doing in Lawndale if you live in New York?

Esmeralda: Oh! I’m back visiting my parent’s for the summer.

Daria: Oh

Esmeralda: I say visiting my parents…but they actually just needed me to house sit while they’re on a cruise.

Jane: That makes more sense.

Esmeralda: Gotta stay on their good side. They’re paying my tuition., she chuckled

Daria: What do you study?

Esmeralda: I’m studying mathematics…and philosophy.

Daria: Really?

Jane: Didn’t Trent say you were a writer…?

Esmeralda: He makes a bigger deal about that than he should. I just do a bit of freelancing to help pay the bills.

She paused long enough to take a bite of pizza.

Esmeralda: It wasn’t until I met Trent that I decided to pursue writing more seriously. Like as a career. There’s not many people out there who just do exactly what they want to and chase their dreams. Your brother is really special.

Jane: He’s certainly something else…

Daria shifted anxiously in her seat. She’d agreed to go out with Esmeralda reflexively, because of what Trent said. But the more Esmeralda talked, the worse Daria felt. She’d secretly hoped that this would be an insight into just how vacant and uninteresting Esmeralda was. Confirmation that she still had something unique to offer.

Daria: I don’t feel so good. Bathroom., Daria blurted as she rushed away from the table with her hands covering her mouth.

Just then, Trent walked in with the rest of Mystik Spiral.

Trent: Hey Janey. Hey Esmé. Where’s Daria?

Jane: Bathroom. She wasn’t feeling too well. Bad pizza. I’m gonna go check on her.

Trent: Let me.

Trent walked over to the bathroom door and knocked softly.

Trent: Daria? You in there?

There was no response.

Trent: Hey Daria. It’s me. Trent. Can you come out? I wanna talk.

Daria splashed some water on her face and rinsed her mouth out before slinking out of the bathroom.

Trent: Not here. Let’s get some fresh air.

They exited through the back door to avoid walking past everyone else.

Daria: You wanted to talk to me?

Trent: Yeah. You ok?

Daria: Uhhh…I guess

Trent: Why don’t I give you a ride home? We can talk in the tank.

Daria: Shouldn’t we say something?

Trent: Nahhhh. Jesse is probably going to eat at least two pizzas by himself. We’ve got plenty of time. They won’t even notice.

Daria: Ok. Thanks

Driving back to Daria’s house, in the tank.

Trent: Hmmm. Daria, I…

Daria: Yea, Trent?

Trent: I’m sorry.

Daria: For what?

Trent: You know…everything.

Daria: Huh?

Trent: The timing just wasn’t right…for me to introduce you to Esmé.

Daria: Oh

Trent: Hmm. She’s good for me, Daria. And I always kind of felt you understood the way I think, so I thought you’d like her too…

Daria said nothing. She shrank in her seat, wondering if the drive home from Pizza King always took this long. Trent looked over at her. A frown swept across his face as he furrowed his brows.

Trent: I haven’t seen you around the house much. Janey misses having you around.

Daria: I told you, I’ve just been busy…

Trent: I know. But it’s kind of lonely in the house…without you.

Daria: What?

Trent: Come around the house again, ok? Even if it’s just for Janey.

Daria: Ok…

Trent: Looks like we’re here., he said as they pulled in front of the Morgendorffer house.

Daria: Yeah. Thanks for the ride.

He leaned over and gave her a peck on the cheek before she could get out of the car.

Trent: All right then, Daria. See you around.

He leaned against the steering wheel, watching her walk inside before heading back to the band, Jane, and Esmeralda.

The next day, Daria called Jane.

Daria: Hey

Jane: Feeling better?

Daria: Yeah. Sorry for just leaving like that.

Jane: No sweat. Trent explained that he drove you home.

Daria: Is that all he said?

Jane: He’s worried about you.

Daria: I tried, Jane. I tried to give her a chance. But she’s not just some shallow, air headed groupie…

Jane: I know…She’s actually pretty cool…and she’s good for the kid. Trent hasn’t been this happy in a while…I’m sorry.

Daria: Yeah…hey, can I come over?

Jane: Really?! Sure. Of course.

Daria: See you soon

Mystery Incorporated in Lawndale

The brightly colored panel van approached the large town. Fred Jones looked over at his friends, but found that they were all sleeping. He sighed. It had been a long trip. He saw the Welcome sign. “Welcome to Lawndale.”

 He wasn’t sure why they had come halfway across the country on an anonymous tip, but Velma had insisted. He grabbed the map of the town from the glove box. ‘Where is this Dutchman Inn?’

  Two Days Earlier

Velma Dinkley exited the van. “We have a tip,” she said.

 “Where?” Daphne Blake asked.

 “In a suburban town in Maryland, named Lawndale. Strange lights and sounds have been observed in several old houses.”

 “Maryland?” Fred asked. “That’s quite far.”

 “It may be far, but we need to find out what is happening.” Velma said.

 “Of course,” Fred said. “It would just take days to get there.”

 “Only two, if we’re strategic with the route,” Velma pointed out.

  Present

‘Of course, Velma was right,’ Fred reflected as the Mystery Machine pulled into the Dutchman inn. Daphne stirred as the van came to a stop. “We’re there?” she asked.

 “Yes.”

After the quintet (including their canine member), had checked into their rooms, they looked over the tip Velma had received.  There had been reports of strange noises from a house on the western outskirts. “Tomorrow, we will contact this Jane Lane, and then investigate that house,” Velma concluded.

  Early the next day, Daria Morgendorffer arrived at her friend’s house early. She wasn’t sure why Jane had called in Mystery Incorporated. There may have been mysterious noises at the house next door to the Lanes, but it wasn’t something to concerned about. “Hey, Daria,” Jane’s brother, Trent, said as he opened the door. “Janie is waiting out back, in the gazebo.”

 “The Gazebo?” Daria asked.

 “She says it’s helping her inspiration today.”

 “Sure.”

  Jane saw Daria come out of the house. “Finally!” she said.

 “Finally?”

 “The Gang are going to be here any minute.”

 “Of course.”

  “There it is,” Velma said, pointing at the white house with an unkempt yard.

 “Like, the one with the strange lawn ornament?” Shaggy Rogers asked.

 “Yes,” Velma said.

 The Mystery Machine pulled up in front of the house.

  Daphne knocked on the door. It was opened by a young man wearing worn clothes. “Hi, I’m Daphne Blake, with Mystery Incorporated.”

 “My sister is waiting for you,” the man said. “She’s out back with her friend.”

 “We’ll come through then,” Daphne said.

 “Sure,” the guy said.

  Scooby Doo looked around as he followed Shaggy through the door. The house looked dilapidated, like many houses the gang had seen during their cases. Maybe there was a mystery here?

  Daria saw the group come out of the house. She noticed Velma Dinkley straight away. ‘Of course I would notice her first,’ she thought. She had recognised Velma as someone she could get along with once she began hearing about the group of mystery solvers.

 “Jane Lane?” the other girl, Daphne Blake, asked.

 “I’m Jane Lane,” Jane said, stepping forwards. “This is my friend, Daria Morgendorffer.”

 “Hi,” Daria said.

 “So, what is this mystery?” Fred Jones asked.

  Velma listened as Jane explained what was going on. “You have recordings of course?” she asked when she had finished.

 “Of course. I hope my brother’s band haven’t recorded over them.”

   “Band?” Shaggy asked.

 “They try to play grunge,” Jane said.

 “Emphasis on the word try,” Daria added.

 “Right,” Shaggy said.

 “Let’s listen to those recordings,” Velma said.

  Daphne followed the others into the Lanes basement. It looked much like many other basements she and her friends had investigated over the years. However, it was rare that a band had their practice space in a basement. Most often they practiced in a garage or a spare room. There had even been a couple who practiced in an attic. “Mystik Spiral?” she asked.

 “But we might change our name,” Jane’s brother, Trent said in response.

 “It sounded interesting,” Daphne said.

 “Well, it was something Daria said,” Trent said.

 “Really?” Velma asked.

 “I said that the name sounded like one for a Doors cover band,” Daria answered.

 “We’re entirely original,” Trent explained. “We’re not about selling out.”

 “OK,” Velma said.

 “Where are these recordings?” Fred asked.

 “Over here,” Jane said.

  Trent loaded a cassette and pressed play. An earie sound then came from the speakers. Velma wasn’t sure what to make of it. She would have to analyse the sound. “So, this did come from next door?” she asked Jane.

 “Yes,” Jane answered. “Several nights ago, as I stated in my tip.”

 “I’ll have to examine this sound with my equipment in the van,” Velma said.

 “You can take the tapes,” Trent said. “We have plenty more.”

 “Thanks,” Velma said.

 “But what else can you tell us?” Fred asked.

 “Not much,” Jane said. She looked to Trent.

“We haven’t seen the neighbours there in years,” Trent added.

 “Not much to go on,” Fred said.

 “I guess we could see if someone’s home,” Daphne suggested.

  Fred looked over the yard of the neighbouring house. He wanted to be sure that there weren’t any traps. “It’s clear,” he said.

 “Clear of what?” Jane asked.

 “Traps,” he answered.

 “You thought there would be traps?” Jane asked.

 “Anything can be a trap,” Fred said. “There are many ingenious ways to hide them.”

 “You sound like you’re speaking from experience,” Jane commented.

 Daria cleared her throat.

 “Daria?” Daphne asked.

 “We should go to the door, rather than continue to talk here.”

 “Good point,” Jane said.

 “Like, anyone could be watching,” Shaggy said in a fearful tone.

 Fred continued looking for traps as he walked up to the door.

  Fred rang the doorbell. Then they nervously waited for a response. ‘Maybe no one’s home,’ Daria thought.

 “I guess no one’s home,” Jane said after a minute.

 Fred then rang the doorbell again, stepping back from the doormat as he did so.

 Nothing happened. They waited again.

 “No one’s home,” Daria said.

 “We could wait,” Daphne said.

 “Or we could go back to the Lane’s,” Velma suggested.

 “Like, let’s do that,” Shaggy added.

 “It’s almost certainly a good idea,” Daria said.

  They re-entered the Lane’s kitchen.

 “We could try again later,” Trent suggested.

 “Of course, we are,” Velma said.

 “The question is; when?” Daria asked.

 “At nightfall?” Jane asked.

 “So, we can see if there are any lights on?” Daphne asked.

 “Yes,” Jane answered.

 “I’m not sure I want to wait that long,” Fred said.

 “I can use the time to analyse the sound,” Velma pointed out.

 “Of course,” Fred said.

i kind of have a self-project-ry headcanon that jimmy is half mexican just extremely white washed. self projection, sure but it's also LA so . the rare times he does speak spanish, let alone speak tbh, it always sounds weird but he tries!

i also hc dutch to have a thing for fashion, let's be honest, he put way too effort into his hair. also the fits he has *mwah* he absolutely talked shit about daniel when he pulled up in the cameo-flannel fit, the rest of the cobras just like 😊 so true bestie while he's rambling about how two different prints don't go well together. he just knew he wanted to look like a reject character of the lost boys

johnny! man. he's well known in school for either being hilarious as shit with tommy but also for having beef with quite literally half the school. this guy would talk your ear off about classic rock, and absolutely has god tier taste in music. he would tell you the mayans invented cell phones with full confidence that he's right and tommy would enable it. if he were an older brother, he'd be practically trent lane from daria with anger issues and a red bull addiction. johnny and his mom have a really good relationship however doesn't call sid by his name let alone dad, but some obscure or weird insult like "oh hi dickass' 

BOBBBBBYYYYYYYYY MY love he attends sunday school which the cobras help him skip sometimes, not necessarily cuz he wants to, but because the cobras insist. bobby and jimmy are probably the most normal of the group and they are closest to each other because of that. he only listens to music and watches tvs/movies his parents approve of so hanging out with the cobras really give him a chance to go apeshit. he did in fact have a "granola childhood" with some fucky wucky turns

Daria arrived at Jane’s house, finding a note on the door. It read “Went for run. Be back soon. Door is unlocked.”

Daria: How safe

As Daria made her way up the stairs, she heard the sound of music and voices coming from Trent’s room “I guess Jane’s already back from her run.” Daria thought.

She walked down the hall to Trent’s room, knocking softly on the already ajar door. Figuring the music was too loud for them to hear her, she entered.

Trent: Woah, shut the door!

Esmeralda: Eek!

Esmeralda quickly pulled the sheets over herself. Trent lay underneath her.

Daria: AHHHH!

Daria yelped as she ran from the room. She crashed into Jane in the hallway.

Jane: Ouch. Slow down there, Speedy Gonzales.

Daria said nothing. Her face was pale and contorted. Jane realized something was wrong.

Jane: What’s wrong? What happened?

Trent stumbled into the hallway with his sheets around his waist. Esmeralda peeked out from behind him.

Trent: Daria—-

Daria darted into Jane’s room. Jane hadn’t fully comprehended what happened, but she guessed it had something to do with the mostly naked couple down the hall. She closed the door to her room behind herself, as she turned her attention to Daria

Jane: I guess you had to learn about sex sometime.

Daria: I didn’t see anything! Or ummm I didn’t want to see anything. God, I’ll never be able to live this down.

Jane: That bad, huh?

Daria: It was like watching the sun explode. Unfortunately, it wasn’t followed by the sweet release of death.

Jane: That is bad…

Daria: You don’t seem that grossed out though. He’s YOUR brother.

Jane: My brain chooses not to process the idea that anyone in my family has sex.

Daria: That’s fair.

Jane: Wanna get out of here and get some fresh airs Maybe go grab a slice? My treat.

Daria: I want to get out of here, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to eat again.

Jane: Daria, you’re blushing.

Daria: Shut up

Jane: I guess it wasn’t actually THAT bad, huh?

They heard a knock on the door.

Trent: Daria…Janey…

Daria: Don’t come in!

Trent: I have pants on this time…

Jane: Go away, Trent. You’ve done enough for one day.

Trent: Sorry

They heard the front door close. The banging sound of the Trentmobile starting soon followed.

Helen opened the door. “Hello, Elisabeth. Stacy will be down shortly.”

Elisabeth Rowe entered. “How are you holding up?” she asked.

“I’m fine. Keeping busy, mostly. My sisters are helping, funnily enough.”

“You’re lonely, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” Helen admitted.

“You aren’t alone,” Elisabeth said taking one of Helen’s hands.

“Thanks, but I don’t know you much,” Helen said.

Stacy and Tiffany then came down the stairs. “Mom, Tiffany would like a lift home,” the former said.

“Sure,” Elisabeth said to her daughter. She turned to Helen. “Would you like to come to a café tomorrow evening?”

“I’ll see if I can swing it with work,” Helen answered. ‘It would be a good idea,’ she thought.

“I’ll hold you to it.”

“How’s Quinn?” Elisabeth asked her daughter as she pulled away from the Morgendorffers.

“She’s still grieving, but she’s coping in her own way,” Stacy answered.

“That’s good.”

“You’re concerned for Mrs. Morgendorffer, aren’t you?”

“Yes.”

Anthony DeMartino, a History teacher at Lawndale High was mysteriously arrested on school grounds yesterday by Federal agents.

When Daria and Jane arrived at school, Mr. O’Neill’s rally was already underway.

“So that's why I say commies aren't team players, so keep them out of team sports. All right!” Kevin said.

“Yay, no commie team!” Brittany added.

“Um, thank you, Kevin. But actually, the communist is your ultimate team player. The team is all; the individual, nothing,” O’Neill said.

“Oh. Well then, never mind. All right!” Kevin then said.

Brittany was about to say something in addition but apparently thought better of it.

“Good morning. As you know, we're here to clear up some misunderstandings and suspicions so we can all feel better about each other and ourselves. So without further ado, I present to you a work in progress, a solo performance I call ‘Nothing to Lose But His Chains: The Life of Karl Marx.’ The year is 1848.” O’Neill pressed play on a tape recorder and an exercise tape began playing. “Oh, dear, that's my exercise tape!”

Mr. DeMartino then appeared.

“Anthony! You weren't kidnapped!” O’Neill said in surprise.

“All right! I finally convinced those glorified dogcatchers from Immigration that I am not an illegal alien. But now I have a question. Who told them I was?”

Daria saw Ms. Barch murmur something under her breath.

“Maybe it was the mind control babes from space, Mr. D., trying to create a distraction,” Charles said.

“Who?” DeMartino asked.

“Them!” Charles said pointing at Daria and Jane.

“Um, I hate to wreck a perfectly good lynching, but you're the ones acting weird,” Daria responded.

“Us?” Kevin asked. “Mr. O'Neill said you're out to destroy football.”

“No! I was telling them about how communists and Martians are the same.”

“That'll clear things up.”

“So there's no communist unfiltration?” Kevin asked.

“And there's no alien takeover?” Charles asked.

“Oh, I don't know. How do you explain that?” Jane asked, as she pointed to where Quinn was joined by Stacy and Tiffany in dressing in all black.”

“We're dressed this way for solidarity,” Tiffany said.

“To help support Quinn in her grief,” Stacy added.

“That makes sense,” Daria murmured as the crowded added a murmur of support.

“Does it?” Jane asked.

“Yes,” Daria said.

“I liked it better when they were under alien control,” Jane groused.

“It was more believable,” Daria said with her usual sarcasm.

“So you see, everyone? Mr. DeMartino's disappearance, all these communist and alien worries... simple misunderstandings, all of them. What do you say we cement our newfound unity by joining hands and singing ‘Man in the Mirror’?”

The teens booed and hissed and left.

Later, Ms. Li called Mr. O’Neill into her office.

“It has come to my attention that you organised a rally this morning.”

“Yes.”

“It was unauthorised! You should have come to me if you wanted to clear up the various misunderstandings surrounding Mr. DeMartino’s arrest.”

“I’m sorry. It was off the cuff.”

“It won’t happen again. Do I make myself clear.”

“No it won’t. I’ll call you first.”

“Good. Dismissed.”

She watched the Language Arts teacher leave. She then went back to the reports that SpiderGirl had been sighted on campus.

That night, SpiderGirl thought about the past two days as she patrolled Lawndale’s downtown, swinging from rooftop to rooftop. Conspiracy theories spreading through the school wasn’t a good thing. But at least none of them involved her. She looked over towards a café where she saw Helen and Mrs. Rowe enter. She smiled under her new, more comfortable, mask. At least her mother was reaching out to those other than her colleagues. She then heard police sirens in the direction of the Creek. With a sigh she then swung in that direction.

Elisabeth looked back at the strange sound.

“Elisabeth?” Helen asked.

“I think SpiderGirl was just watching us.”

“Now who’s being paranoid,” Helen said.

“Anastacia has told me all about the rumors at school,” Elisabeth said, referring to her daughter by her full first name.

“Daria said it was she and Jane who started it,” Helen said as she lead the way into the café.

“But how?” Elisabetha asked.

“Things they said were misinterpreted,” Helen answered.

“That makes sense.”

They then went to order their coffees.

While her mother was talking to Elisabeth, Daria was watching Sick Sad World with Jane when they heard Trent’s cheerful music in a commercial break!

“Hey, it’s Trent’s hell music,” Jane said.

“If you don't have a car or your present car sucks, go to Happy Herb with a few thousand bucks. Then you can drive here, you can drive there, drive where you want, Happy Herb don't care. It won't make you better or smarter, that true, but you can drive around when there's nothing else to do. So go buy a car, buy a damn car, hit the road to nowhere in your Happy Herb car.”

“I'm Happy Herb, and I sell cars, so come on down.”

“So now you know,” Trent said, with shame in his voice, from the door.

“Oh, um, nice jingle,” Daria said.

“You don't have to tell me. I'm a complete sell-out. But I really needed the gig,” Trent explained.

“What's the going rate for an artist's soul these days?” Jane asked.

“20 bucks, an hour of free studio time and a set of tires,” Trent answered.

“That’s it?” Jane asked.

“They’re new tires,” Trent explained.

Sick Sad World returned.

“Hey, look, it’s that guy,” Trent said.

“And what unspeakable acts did the space beings perform on you?” the usual reporter asked.

“They took my flesh and replaced it with an alien synthetic skin. A skin capable of sensations you can't even imagine. But that's not the worst of it,” the former Pizza guy said before breaking down and crying.

“Uh-oh, he's gonna get his skin wet and shrink it,” Jane commented.

“They used me, and then they made me lose my job.”

“You saw it first on Sick, Sad World. Alien love goddesses are depriving Americans of their skins and their jobs.”

Then a shot of Daria and Jane in ‘space vixen’ outfits was shown.

“Hey, cool,” Trent said.

“We should be upset, right?” Daria said.

“I don’t know, those outfits look pretty good,” Jane said.

“You’re kidding, right?” Daria asked.

“Nope!”

“Then again. I doubt anyone is taping this.”

“Only very few,” Jane said in reassurance.

More Assistance From SpiderGirl

LDPD report another incidence of assistance from the ‘vigilante known as SpiderGirl’ last night when a car being driven by a thief was stopped by one of her webs.

Agent Krista Bell entered the large building on the edge of New York. Once inside she selected the top floor in the elevator.

A few minutes later, the blonde agent was shown into a large office. She approached the intimidating bald African American man with a goatee and an eye patch over his left eye.

Nick Fury, the Director of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. “Report, Agent Bell,” he said.

“It’s confirmed. SpiderGirl exists,” she said.

“But is there any indication of her identity?” Fury asked.

“Absolutely no clue. It is too early to tell. I recommend sending more Plainclothes agents to Lawndale, sir.”

“I have already done so,” Fury said. “You live there, don’t you?”

“Yes, sir,” Bell answered.

“Then you are to keep an eye out for her. Gather all the information you can.”

Bell nodded.

“Another thing. There are other things happening in Lawndale. We need to know what is behind those too.”
