Gotta love when a character a lot of people like takes a turn in their arc—rather than understanding that maybe the writer had a plan for them all along (or maybe they just got new inspo it’s really neither here nor there) those people start complaining about bad writing because they felt entitled to continue liking that character just because they did in the beginning and apparently have never heard of the concept of an opinion changing upon learning new information

One of my favorite Miyazaki Soulsborne tropes is that being born disabled also disables your destiny.

Lothric and Lorian were supposed to be a legendary prince who would save the world, but something went wrong with the pregnancy and they were born a pair of sickly fucked up disabled twins, who grew to resent the cycle of the flame and the violence it represented.

Bayle the Dread was supposed to be an archdragon but he was born with only one pair of wings, and thus denied a place among the imperial authority of the ancient dragons. This developed into a chip on his shoulder so deep it warped his entire being into an unquenchable desire to kill and eat Ancient dragons. A desire so powerful it can be spread to non-dragons and turn them into dragons.

In the same way that Miyazaki associates gender nonconformity with overwhelming divine power, he associated disability with a challenge to tyrannical social orders. Dope.

Ok, so absolute blue skying(pun intended), I'm gonna guess something Castle in the Sky like we know Brennan has a love for Hayao Miyazaki and the voice over at the end is someone named Comfrey McCloud saying that somewhere(?) called Zood is real so Zood some kind of cool sky place and we're gonna get some fun exploration play at the table which isn't a vibe we've gotten a lot of in d20.

In total, my insane guess with no basis is that Siobhan and maybe Zac's characters used to travel with Comfrey looking for Zood in some capacity. Now, with a new lead, they are going again, this time bringing along their old adventuring partners' grandkid with a mech suit and son whose parents put their name in the sky, along with an absolutely dope mercenary and some other guy.

it's been way too long since i last did wildly self-indulgent fanart, so of course i did it for an SVSSS AU that doesn't even have any actual fanfiction written of it yet. but what can i say! it's a compelling scenario! Just check the original post for details!

here's a workplace doodle for his mess of an outfit, too:

Xin Mo is floating behind his back, wrapped in talismans. the collars are meant to be vaguely inspired on a flower bud.

Some notes i came up with for this version, copied straight from a month-old discord convo:

he may have protagonist halo now, but he's for sure not a stallion protagonist. he literally exchanged fates with his favorite person in the world in order to spare them a hellish trial-- that's romantic as fuck!! damn!! this is old CLAMP shoujo and no mistake!!

binghe may no longer be the protag, but he's still a half-heavenly demon. power-wise, heavenly demons can't be topped, and all the remaining heavenly demons are accounted for. so, SQQ can't be a heavenly demon, even in part.

HOWEVER, as a protagonist, there's a factor more important than power! it's the CHUUNI FACTOR. what's more CHUUNI™️ than being part demon?

one option is being part demon and part angel.

how would that even fucking work??????? IDK man, you can either pull from chinese folklore for fairies or heavenly beings or spirits, or you can blame Airplane and go "he accidentally implied the existence of christian elements by means of importing unexamined anime tropes"

Shen Jiu conveniently has a big fat blank on his parentage. We as fans can and have put whatever the hell we wanted there.

SQQ would jump into the abyss still under the impression SJ was a shallow villain. If his trip through the abyss involves recovering SJ's memories somehow, that sure would be fun times, huh?

so he awakens a mysterious ancestry and survives the abyss and takes Xin Mo, but he probably takes longer than Binghe did due to being squishier.

but Xin Mo isn't ACTUALLY his! so he papers it over with sealing talismans, and to battle the temptation to wield it he takes to wearing these longass sleeves. they're probably covered in talismans as well.

guessing Xiu Ya stayed behind to be mooned over by the clown trio in Cang Qiong. let's go full sparkle-sue here and say he's now fighting almost entirely via musical cultivation. i like swan-necked konghou harps so let's go with that, it'll look dope.

why is he barefoot? why WOULDN'T he be, is the question. fragile!! suffering!! dainty!! he's a shrinking flower, tormented by the weight of the One Sword To Rule Them All!!

also for extra pathos, his constant mental struggle against Xin Mo means he can't spare energy to front. it takes constant focus! he's still a bit in his delusional shit, but even when he's going "oh no, binghe is only latched throat-deep onto my dick because he's a good boy who's concerned about me and the danger i could pose by losing control" he'd probably… well, he'd probably say that out loud to anyone who asked. he's in a half-trance, mentally battling the crazy-making sword. lying is too much work.

Wouldn’t resisting Xin Mo’s influence be the mental and spiritual equivalent to training under 400x gravity or something? his wife-beam is going to be off the charts when he puts it down.

also also: who the hell dressed him like that? fucking shang qinghua, of course, after SQQ showed up in the northern palace to punish MBJ for hurting binghe in the conference. did the system explain shit to SQH? on the one hand, extremely funny if it updates him on the role change out of nowhere mid-alliance. on the other hand, extremely funny if he only finds out because Binghe is crying safely in Qing Jing while the scum villain apparently jumped into the abyss.

Finally can join in on the weekly watching and discussing now that we’re on post-movie content and wow this episode was worth the wait. Went through a range of emotions in this culminating in having my jaw on the floor there at the end. I feel so bad for the “witch” she had a kid and family waiting on her.. she deserved better.

Production values in general are still amazing, wow was wondering if they’d just be that good for the movie or if it would translate to the tv anime.. certainly looks like it. The scene of Machu with the dog in the alley had no business being that well animated lol. Loving the casual machu loungewear shots too she’s so pretty.

The mystery continues to build around Shuji. There’s a ton of Eva references throughout this episode from character positions to tropes and I can’t help but see the similarities between he and Kaworu. In line with that, Char’s soul is likely merged with the Red Gundam. But that still doesn’t explain what Shuji is and what Char saw the day he disappeared. I feel like he may have gained access to 4D space and thus was able to perceive time like in interstellar.🤔

The space battle today was so good man. I like how they have the mobile suits move in such inhuman ways reminding you these are giant killing machines not just big humans. The witch’s stigma attack was so cool and against anyone else she’d have had a dub. Unfortunately ran up against a demon, RIP. At least she’ll be with her Mav now 😔 The callbacks to the original newtype fight scene from 0079 was dope too.

Alright, it’s time I discuss Star Sapphire Bernard and why I think he would legitimately be a good fit for becoming a ring wearer (aka Blurri read a theory book on love and has a lot of feelings about Bernard Dowd and now the Star Sapphires could be written moving forward)

First let’s establish what makes a Star Sapphire chosen by the Star Sapphire Ring (bear in mind I am not a full expert and I understand that the Star Sapphire Corps have changed over time so I’ll try to be as up to date on their lore as possible). Star Sapphires are empowered by Love the way Green Lanterns are empowered by Willpower. They are typically portrayed as women scorned or someone who lost someone they love, and this event is what lead them to obtain their abilities, aka when the ring chose them and They chose to become a Star Sapphire, aka fight fear and hatred and give love.

However, It’s not exclusive to these events taking place the same way wearing a Star Sapphire ring isn’t exclusive to women, it’s just usually the case we see in most stories. This emphasis on choice is where I’m reminded of Bernard.

Bernard Dowd is someone who’s been hurt, both in a very literal, physical sense, as well as an emotional and spiritual one. Starting with the obvious Bernard was in a pain cult, where literal beatings were used to achieve “enlightenment” and so on, though for Bernard it was clearly something he felt he deserved, much like eventually becoming the cults sacrifice, which Tim fortunately intervened in. However, despite being rejected by his parents after coming to terms with not being straight and not having seen Tim in years, not to mention being deep in the cult that convinces him that beating will make the pain in his heart stop, he chooses to reconnect with Tim. And when freed from the cult’s sacrificial alter, he fights by Tim’s side to free not only himself from the cult but the others they indoctrinated.

Later we see this theme continue with Bernard talking about how he wouldn’t reject his parents if they decided to change their tune and treat him like their son again, even if it would be more than understandable for him not to. He chooses to see them as people who can change, and to love them despite the pain they’ve caused him, while still keeping his distance and not caving to their manipulation or demands. Bernard is someone who has been shown, in multiple ways, to already align with the Star Sapphire’s foundations of choosing to give love and fight against hatred - even when it would be the arguably easier option.

There’s also the fact that at this point there are currently no male Star Sapphires in their ranks, only male Lanterns who’ve briefly worn the ring. This would leave Bernard in a unique position as the only known male Star Sapphire, leaving for a new and interesting story to be told for DC. Bernard is also a character criticized at times for “only being a love interest” and being created as a supporting character to Tim, as was the case when he first debuted Pre-Rebirth. Turning that trope on its head by making Bernard a being literally giving super powers from the love he has, for Tim or otherwise, would be dope as hell imo, but that might just be me.

Love is sometimes defined as the choice to extend oneself to nurture another or your own spiritual growth (go read all about love by bell hooks for more on that). It is an action and a decision made the same as activating one’s willpower to achieve their goals. I think with this specification in mind we see how Bernard embodies this choice and how it could lead to him becoming a powerful member of the Star Sapphire Corps.

TLDR; Bernard is a character who is shown to already align with the core of what a Star Sapphire is (choosing love and gaining power from it) and it’d be cool if DC gave him a ring.
