She Was His Hope

My Tropetember 2022 contribution for the prompt : Time Travel.

I’m sorry for the mistakes, English is not my native language. I hope you like it.

Summary : Sarada represented hope. Hope that one day Sasuke would avenge his clan and return to Konoha. That Sakura, Sarada and him would be a family. He had to cling to that hope.

The village of Oto was on the alert. A prisoner had escaped and Sasuke was among the shinobis who had gone in search of him. He knew that this prisoner was special and that Orochimaru was experimenting on him, but he did not want to tell him more. Only Kabuto knew. All Orochimaru said to him before he left was :

“Don't let him touch you.”

Sasuke frowned. Easier said than done. If only he knew what kind of experiences Orochimaru was doing.

He arrived in the forest and jumped from tree to tree. After a few minutes, he caught up with the prisoner. He threw a kunai, but the man dodged it. Sasuke watched him. He was tall and very thin. He had shoulder-length brown hair and piercing blue eyes. The man attacked him and Sasuke understood that he was much stronger than he looked. He had to hurry, if the fight lasted, he would be at a disadvantage. Sasuke realized he was not strong enough against him. The prisoner quickly performed a jutsu. The Uchiha was not quick enough and the man punched him in the chest. Sasuke gasped. He could not breathe anymore. It was strange because the punch had not been that strong. His vision blurred, he fell and everything went black.

Sasuke slowly opened his eyes. The sun dazzled him. How long had he been unconscious ? He remembered that it was still dark when he went in search of the prisoner. He stood up and looked around. He was still in a forest, but it was not Oto's. Oto's was gloomy but this one made him think of the forest that was on the outskirts of Konoha. The two villages were separated by several miles.

What had happened since he lost consciousness ? Had they managed to find the prisoner ? And most importantly, how did he get to this forest ?

He climbed to the top of a tree and looked away. There were only trees as far as the eye could see. He jumped from tree to tree, telling himself that he would eventually find a village. After a while, he felt several chakras. He hid his chakra and approached them. They were five, four genins who was a bit younger than him and their sensei. Sasuke suddenly noticed the Konoha symbol on their headband. He frowned. The blond genin looked a lot like Naruto. The blond approached their team's kunoichi, who was leaning against a tree and rubbing her eyes. Sauke knew that from where he was none of them could see him, but he could see what they were doing and he could heard what they were talking about.

“Sarada, are you sure you're okay ?” The Naruto doppelganger asked.

The so-called Sarada put her glasses back on her nose and smiled slightly.

“I’m fine. My eyes just hurt a little.”

“You has overdone with the Sharingan,” the boy scolded her. “You should be more careful.”

The girl answered, but Sasuke was not listening anymore. The Sharingan, he thought. She has the Sharingan. It was impossible. Itachi had slaughtered their entire clan, leaving him as the only survivor. So how could this girl have the Sharingan ? Maybe she got it like Kakashi. Another possibility occurred to him. Did a member of the clan have an illegitimate child ? That would explain why Itachi did not kill her.

The genin team resumed their journey and Sasuke followed them from afar. He watched Sarada. She intrigued him. There was something familiar about her. Perhaps because he had just learned that he was no longer the only Uchiha. None of the shinobi noticed him. He wondered if the level of Konoha's ninjas had weakened since his absence.

After half an hour, he recognized Konoha's gates. He stopped as the team entered the village. He hesitated to follow them. It had been so long since he had left the village, he did not know what to expect. Orochimaru had spies all over the Land of Fire and he had learned that Naruto had left the village with Jiraiya to follow his training, Kakashi was often outside Konoha because of different missions. As for Sakura, she had become Tsunade's apprentice. He wondered if he was going to see her. He shook his head to dismiss this thought from his mind. It was not the time to think about that.

He quietly entered the village and jumped on a roof. He opened his eyes wide. Nothing looked like the Konoha he had known. How could the village have changed so much in less than two years ? Giant screens, modern buildings, the agitation of the village. Sasuke had never seen anything like it. Was it really Konoha ?

He jumped from roof to roof without being noticed and saw the statues of the Hokages in the distance. Seven faces were carved in stone. There were the first four Hokages, as Sasuke had always known them, as well as Tsunade who had been added since his departure. What surprised him were the other two faces. Kakashi and a man who looked like :

“Naruto,” he whispered.

It was impossible. Naruto was not Hokage and the face on the rock was not a teenager. And Kakashi. He had never been Hokage. A thought crossed his mind. It was stupid, but it was the only explanation he had. He had time traveled in the future. His heart was racing in his chest. This girl, Sarada, had the Sharingan and if he was in the future, it would mean that she was his daughter, that he had killed Itachi and avenged his clan. In this case, he had returned to Konoha and started a family. Or maybe she was Itachi's daughter. So everything he had done from the beginning would have been for nothing. He had to know. He went in search of Sarada and even if Konoha was different from what he had known, he managed to find his bearings quickly. He ended up finding her with a man that Sasuke watched carefully. It was not Itachi. He heard Sarada say :

“See you tonight papa.”

She left and the man looked at him.

“I know you're there,” he said. “There's no need to hide.”

Sasuke stood in front of the man.

“How did you know I was there ?”

“You were spotted as soon as you entered the village. I was immediately notified of your presence.”

“You are me, aren't you ?”

There was no point in waiting. He had to be sure.

“That’s right. I am you in twenty years.”

“And this girl ?”

“Sarada. She is my daughter.”

He had succeeded, Sasuke thought. The man in front of him was the proof of it. Sasuke put his hand to his face and burst out laughing.

“I did it. I killed Itachi.”

He pulled his hand back and his future-self nodded.

“How ? What had happened ? Is that how you lost your arm ?”

“This is something you will have to learn by yourself by going back to your time.”

Sasuke saw something that surprised him. It only lasted a second, yet he was sure he saw sadness in the eyes in his future-self. Why would he be so sad ? Killing Itachi had been his goal for years.

“Do you remember how you got here ?”

Sasuke thought about it. It could only be because of this man, the prisoner. He had used a jutsu on him. That was why he lost consciousness and why he was in the future.

“I need to find Orochimaru. Only him know how to return to my time.”

“Fine. We will see him tomorrow. I am going to go back to home. You are welcome, if you want.”

“I can manage by myself.”

He did not need his help, he thought. If he did not want to tell him what happened with Itachi, he did not see the point of staying with him.

“Meet me tomorrow morning at the village gate and we'll go to Orochimaru,”  his future-self said.

He was about to leave, but Sasuke stopped him by asking him a question that had intrigued him since he had seen Sarada.

“Who is Sarada's mother ?”

The older Sasuke looked him and a loving smile lit up his face. Sasuke never thought he would ever be able to smile like that.

“Sakura. It was what we always wanted, wasn't it ?”

Sasuke did not answer and the man left. He was right. It was what he had always wanted. To go back to Konoha, to be reunited with Sakura, to marry her and to have children with her. Not because he needed someone to rebuild his clan, but because he loved her. He loved her since their first mission to the Land of Waves. Since she had cried for him. But the more time passed, the more this hope disappeared. He was sinking deeper and deeper into darkness and Sakuke had come to believe that he would have no future. Yet the man who had stood in front of him was proof that there was still a light beyond that darkness. As small as it was, there was still hope.

He left the training ground. He had to see, even for a few seconds, what his life was going to be like. Maybe he should not, maybe he would risk changing everything, but this urge was stronger than anything he had ever felt. It was at nightfall when he finally found the Uchiha's home. It was a downtown apartment.

He climbed up the top of the tallest tree and saw the dining room window. The room was lit. He saw older Sasuke seated with Sarada and a future version of Sakura. They were having dinner. Sarada was telling them something, Sakura was smiling, the same smile his mother had when he enthusiastically told her about his day at the academy. It was the smile of a mother who loved her child more than anything. He looked at his future-self. He was smiling too. A proud and gentle smile. He was happy. Suddenly, Sakura looked at the window. She did not seem surprised to see him. Of course she was aware of his presence. She and Sasuke were married and he had told her about his time travel. She knew he would want to know what his future would be like. Once again, she knew what he was thinking, like when she knew he was leaving Konoha. She smiled at him as if to tell him that everything was going to be alright. Then, she turned her attention to Sarada.

Sasuke had seen enough and left. He found a secluded corner to rest until the next morning.

The next morning, Sasuke found his future-self at the gates of Konoha and they set off for Orochimaru's lair. They traveled without talking. After all, what did they have to talk about ? Sasuke wanted to know what happened with Itachi and the other Sasuke refused to answer him. So he did not see the point of talking to him.

After two hours, they arrived at the lair. Sasuke immediately recognized the place. Orochimaru had taken him there once. The difference was that the place was now guarded by Konoha shinobi. They entered the lair and found Orochimaru in his lab. Sasuke opened his eyes wide. Twenty years had passed and yet Orochimaru was younger. There was nothing human about this man. Orochimaru gave them a saccharine smile and looked him straight in the eye.

“Sasuke, nice to see you again. I missed that contemptuous look. Family life will weaken you.”

“Orochimaru”, older Sasuke snapped. “You know why we're here, so get to the point.”

“Indeed, the Hokage informed me. Follow me.”

He led them to one of the computers and Sasuke recognized the picture of the prisoner on the screen.

“This is Prisoner 457,” Orochimaru said. “I'm sure you recognize him.”

“He doesn't have a name ?”

“Let’s say that at the time his name did not interest me. Only his abilities mattered. I had been studying him for years. Something special in his chakra had allowed him to create a jutsu that allowed him to time travel. Time travel, an extraordinary ability that I wanted to discover.”

Sasuke shivered. If Orochimaru had managed to time travel, he could not imagine what he could have done.

“He managed to escape,” Orochimaru continued. “This is where you went in search of him.”

“I found him, but he touched me. Then I was here.”

His future-self nodded.

“I remember. However, I can't remember what happened after he touched me. All I know is that when I woke up, I was in my bedroom.”

“This jutsu has a limited effect,” Orochimaru said. “Two days more or less. You'll be back in your time in a few hours. I do not know more. He was never found.”

Both Sasukes had returned to Konoha after their meeting with Orochimaru. In the end, Sasuke had learned nothing, except that he would soon return to his time.

“I have to report to the Hokage.”

“You mean Naruto.”

Future Sasuke smiled, amused.

“You'll get used to it.”

I won’t, Sasuke thought. He will never be able to get used of being under this idiot command. The man left and Sasuke decided to go to the training ground. It was a good way to see the level of the new generation. And he would never admit it, but part of him hoped to find Sarada there.

She was training with her blond teammate. Definitely Naruto's son, Sasuke thought. He smiled when he saw Sarada having the upper hand over the boy. Their training stopped when Sarada hit the ground with her fist and formed a crater. With a little more training, she might become as strong as Tsunade. Sarada smiled and helped the boy to stand up.

“Well done Sarada, looks like you've got your chakra under control even better.”

“I asked my mother to help me.”

Sasuke was surprised. If Sakura had succeeded in making Sarada progress to this point, it meant that in the future she would become extremely powerful.

“I have to leave nothing to chance if I want to become Hokage.”

Sasuke nearly fell to the ground. Hokage ! His future daughter wanted to become Hokage ! The training ended and the boy left. Sarada suddenly disappeared. Sasuke looked up and saw her,  fist raised, charging at him. He barely had time to dodge her. She hit the ground and formed a crater. She stood up and looked at him suspiciously.

“Why were you spying on us ?”

Sasuke smiled slightly. She had managed to spot him. For the first time since he had traveled back in time, he could see her closely. He looked at her, trying to etch her image into his memory. He must not activate his Sharingan. Physically, she looked a lot like him. But her attitude, the way she talked, she had inherited everything from Sakura. It was really strange to think that he was in front of his daughter, when they were the same age. Sarada represented hope. Hope that one day he would avenge his clan and return to Konoha. That Sakura, Sarada and him would be a family. He had to cling to that hope.

“Who are you ?” Sarada asked. “I had never seen you in the village before.”

“Distribute your chakra in your legs. You will gain in speed.”

Sarada frowned and Sasuke disappeared. Even if he wanted to, he could not stay with. She would might find out who he was.

Sasuke gazed at the village from the top of Kakashi's statue. He glanced at Naruto statue. This idiot was stubborn enough to become Hokage. He thought that maybe one day Sarada would have her face carved in stone too. A Uchiha, Hokage. He suddenly felt a chakra coming towards him. This chakra was so familiar to him that he immediately knew who it belonged to.

“Sakura.”

“I knew I would find you here.”

Sasuke looked at her. Even if she was twenty years older, he would recognize her green eyes and her smile anywhere. There was a strength and a confidence in her that she did not have when she was a genin. Sasuke could not help thinking that as she got older, she had become even more beautiful.

“I came to see how you were,” she said. “I imagine this situation must not be easy for you.”

Sasuke looked in the distance. Once again, she guessed how he felt.

“Can I ask you a question ?”

Sakura nodded.

“Did I make you happy ?”

A loving smile lit up her face.

“Yes, very happy.”

Sasuke felt a weight taken off his mind. He suddenly had a strange feeling. As if his whole body was getting heavy. His vision blurred. It could only mean one thing.

“It's time,” he said.

He was going back to his time. Sakura slipped her hand into his and squeezed it to give him strength. Sasuke looked at her.

“All will end well,” she said. “I promise.”

He nodded. Yes, everything will end well. Sakura and Sarada were his future and he would do anything to make it happen. He fell into space and everything went black.

Sasuke slowly opened his eyes and looked around. He was in his bedroom, in one of Orochimaru's lair. He sat down and saw Kabuto leaning against the door with his arms crossed.

“You are finally awake,” he said.

Sasuke looked at him suspiciously. He did not trust this man. He was far too close to Orochimaru.

“What happened ?” Sasuke asked.

“We found you unconscious in the forest. Orochimaru' asked me to watch over you until you wake up. Yet he told you you had to be careful that the fugitive did not touch you.”

He smirked. That smirk sent shivers down Sasuke's spine.

“Now that I'm awake, you can go.”

Kabuto put his hand on the handle, but before he opened the door, he looked at Sasuke.

“Now you know that he uses a jutsu to time travel. But there is a limited effect. According to Orochimaru's research, you will forget what you saw in a few moments.”

Sasuke immediately understood what he wanted to know.

“I didn't see anything”, he said. “I have no future.”

There was no way he was putting Sakura’s life at risk. Orochimaru would use her against him. Kabuto showed no feelings and left the room. Sasuke got up and looked out the window. All he saw was dark and gloomy. It was nothing like the Konoha of the future. He would forget everything he had seen. It was obvious, the other Sasuke did not remember anything. Maybe it was better that way, otherwise he would risk changing his future with Sakura and Sarada.

Sasuke tried to remember their faces one last time, but it was getting more and more difficult. His memories were hazy. After a few seconds, he blinked and frowned. It was impossible to remember what he was thinking at the moment. He sighed and left his bedroom. It was surely nothing important.

Voici ma participation pour le Tropetember 2022. J’espère que ça vous plaira.

Résumé : Lena entra dans son laboratoire. Elle n'avait pas beaucoup dormi durant la nuit et elle était exténuée. Cela faisait deux semaines que ça durait. Elle passait ses nuits à faire des rêves étranges. Mais plus le temps passait, plus elle avait fini par comprendre que se n'était pas de simples rêves, mais des souvenirs.

Lena entra dans son laboratoire. Elle n'avait pas beaucoup dormi durant la nuit et elle était exténuée. Cela faisait deux semaines que ça durait. Elle passait ses nuits à faire des rêves étranges. Mais plus le temps passait, plus elle avait fini par comprendre que se n'était pas de simples rêves, mais des souvenirs.

Des souvenirs d'une vie passée dans un monde moyenâgeux, rempli de magie. Des noms et des visages revenaient tout le temps dans ses rêves. Arthur, Merlin, Guenièvre, Morgause, Uther et celui qu'elle portait, Morgane. Ils étaient des personnages de légendes qui pourtant ont fait partis d'une de ses anciennes vies. Elle se voyait enfant, jouant dans les jardins du château de Camelot avec Arthur. Elle se voyait se lier d'amitié avec Guenièvre qui était sa servante. Elle se voyait cacher sa magie à Uther, elle ressentait encore la peur qu'elle avait d'être découverte entrain de pratiquer la magie et subir les châtiments qui étaient réservés aux sorciers. Elle voyait sa rencontre avec Morgause et l'influence qu'elle avait eu sur elle et sur sa magie. La magie avait été une partie d'elle, comme elle l'était encore aujourd'hui.

Il y a encore quelques semaine, Lena aurait ri de tout ça. La magie, les vies antérieurs, tout ceci n'était pas réelle. La science était réelle et concrète. Elle avait toujours cru en la science. Pourtant, elle était bien obligé de croire que l'impossible était désormais possible.

Elle repensa à sa vie passée. Elle aurait très bien pu refaire les mêmes erreurs que Morgane. Comme elle, elle avait perdu sa mère très jeune. Uther et Lillian n'étaient pas les parents idéaux et Morgause avait eu une forte influence sur Morgane, comme Lex en avait eu sur elle. Lena aurait pu devenir Morgane. Elle avait touché les ténèbres et aurait pu y plonger comme elle. Mais Lena avait quelque chose que Morgane n'avait pas. Elle avait…

« Lena ? »

Lena sortit de ses pensées. Kara lui souriait. Elle portait son costume de Supergirl. Elle venait de sauver les passagers de deux trains qui étaient entrés en collision.

« Est-ce que tout va bien ? »

Lena acquiesça et sourit.

« J'étais juste perdue dans mes pensées. Tu as besoin de quelque chose ?

-J'onn m'a demandé de réunir l'équipe.

-Très bien. Je range ces dossiers et j'arrive. »

Kara sourit. Oui, Lena avait eu de la chance parce qu'elle avait Kara. Elle était sa lumière et son espoir. Sans elle, elle aurait pris le même chemin que Morgane. 

Morgane avait eu droit à une seconde chance en devenant Lena. C'était grâce à cette seconde chance que Kara était dans sa vie.

Yennefer has always put her career first, but all of that might change when her friends introduce her to a new online dating app and she matches with White Wolf. Too bad he stands her up on their first date, but luckily for her, there's a familiar face working at the bar who saves the day/date. (AO3)

Dancing between darkness and dawn (Completed): Professor Geralt has a one night stand before the start of the semester and while he wishes he could see her again, he should've learnt by now that you always have to be careful what you wish for. (AO3)

the longing never bared, aches to be revealed (WIP): “Geralt, right?” she asks as they cross each other. He’s on his way back in while she seems to be heading out to the festival grounds. His stage name is different from his real one, so he assumes she must’ve either been briefed about the other artists by her agent or googled him herself to figure out his actual name. Either way, she still remembers it and it flatters him, but he tries to play it cool.

Or Geralt and Yennefer are musicians, cross paths and eventually match in an unlikely way. (AO3)

I'll take you to the moon and bring you back (Completed): He tries to apologise more than once, but she brushes him off. Going on about something like muscle memory and natural responses to erotic situations etc. and he doesn’t dare to tell her this wouldn’t have happened with just any co-star or actress. All of it happened because of her and the effect she has on him.(AO3)

Penne for your thoughts? (One-shot): When chef Yennefer of Vengerberg agrees to do an interview with a magazine because her restaurant was recently rewarded with its first Michelin Star, she didn't really know what to expect, but if she'd known the interviewer would've been such a sexist prick, she would've never gone through with this. Luckily for her the photographer makes it a bearable afternoon. (AO3)

(to) the manufacturer of my dreams (One-shot): Yennefer has had an awful day at work and she's in desperate need of some me-time. Having an intruder in her apartment isn't making it any better for her, or is it? (AO3)
