Oropher & Noodle (Esgaleth)

Last year's TRSB I promised this drawing to @scary-grace . And I DID do it a couple of months ago, I just never uploaded it 😬

But here it is! A very done Oropher (he ain't even wearing all of them layers of his clothes), and Esgaleth just liquifying in his hold XD

Also, the fuck? Why does Oropher get skinnier and skinnier every time i draw him?? He used to have like, some VERY nice toned shoulders.

There were so many good stories in this year's trsb! I had a lot of fun doing this late treat art for @polutrope 's story, Hearken Still Unsated.

Here's the summary:

“For how many years," he asks, "have we two listened for the echoes of the Music of Creation in the oceans and lakes and rivers? And yet we will never be sated. Like the water in which they say it lives, the Song does not rest but ever moves and changes. It may pool in a great lake for an age and then pour down into the Sea in another. It fills whatever spaces it can and flows by whatever paths most easily open before it.”

When the Noldor return to Middle-earth to make war on Morgoth, only rumours reach Menegroth of their reasons for coming, but Doriath's minstrel experiences their loss and longing through his connection to Music and the gift of his Queen. Years later, he is sent to the Feast of Reuniting and meets the Elf whose grief he felt. A story about the Eldar returning home, their connection to the land and to each other, and their relationship to Music and fate, love and free will. 

It's a gorgeous Daeron/Maglor fic. I'll leave close ups of my art as well as the symbolism and a few non-spoilery thoughts on the fic under the cut. :)

So I decided to do a locket type layout... the way @polytrope writes is so beautiful. It reminded me somehow of stained glass, so I wanted to incorporate that as well. Daeron, grey elf that he is, has a much simpler and modest design than Mr. Feanorian noldo over there. 🤭 The stained glass sections are mirrored, and there are seven sections in reference to his brothers and fathers. That is the feanorian star at the bottom as well. Of course he has his harp at the top, and then the star on either side is the same one, mirrored. I wanted it between him and Daeron on purpose; it is Earendil's light, the star of hope that symbolizes their new start together.

I just really wanted to convey something of the fairy-tale beauty this story has. :)

Hearken Still Unsated 

The crack of burning timber. The echo of vengeful laughter. 

Daeron gathers up all the sounds. There is nothing more than disconnected notes at first, but he sings them all the same. He finds shapes; he fits them into Song. He tilts his neck towards the sky and sings until his lungs are near to bursting with the swell of sound. He sings until his throat burns from shaping such ragged discord into harmony. He sings until a single star appears above him. 

“Ambar,” he sings. “Umbar.” His last mournful notes float up towards the firmament like tendrils of mist. 

The storm drifts off.

A beautiful fic - written for the TRSB22 - that follows the destinies of two talented souls. Musical, lyrical, and entirely enchanting, this piece deserves more readers by far!

Hence, why there's more art for it now. Shoutout also for the original artist @melestasflight

Bitter (2308 words, G, Maedhros & Fingon)

Three meals and three conversations between Maedhros and Fingon (mostly about food but not only). This was an easy fic to write. Everything just came together and I still like it very much. It also has art made by lorica-art!

Chronicles of Grief (2392 words, T, hints of Russingon)

This fic is just Fingon coping with Fingolfin’s death by writing letters to Maedhros, which can also qualify as diary entries. I’ll be honest, I haven’t reread it since I posted it, but I still think it’s pretty good.

A King, Uncrowned (A King, Enthroned) (5026 words, T, Maedhros & Fingolfin)

A TRSB 2021 treat for navyinks, this fic chronicles the day of Fingolfin’s coronation from Maedhros’s perspective. I tagged it as 5000 words of anxiety and I stand by it. I wrote most of the fic pretty easily and then was stuck when it came to the ending. But eventually, I wrote it and I’m proud of it. Navyinks also made another wonderful artwork for the fic!

Dearest Cousin (5614 words, T, Russingon)

My entry for Tolkien Secret Santa 2021. This was so fun to write! Probably the most fun I’ve had writing a fic. A series of misunderstandings, pining and a resolution thanks to a failed prank. I think it’s one of the funniest fics I’ve ever written (not that there are a lot of them).

Play Like It Is the Last Time (9808 words, M, Russingon)

This fic is special in several ways. It’s the latest fic I’ve posted, the longest fic I’ve written for this fandom, the first (and probably the last) modern AU I’ve written for this fandom. I jokingly call it my magnum opus. It’s not perfect, I know, maybe I’ve even written better fics, but I had wanted to write a football AU for such a long time, and then the perfect opportunity presented itself during TRSB22. I think one of the reasons I was distant from the fandom for the last months was because after writing this fic I thought well, my job here is done, I combined my last and current fandoms, there is nothing more left to do :D

It's up to Bilbo to show Thorin that the world is worth exploring and that not everything is as it seems.

My friends, this is Mister Baggins from the Shire Inquiry, he will be observing and reporting on today’s meeting.” Thorin’s eyes narrowed even more as the curly-haired fellow, Mister Baggins, was taking his seat and sorting out the mess in his arms. “Do you have a watch, Mister Baggins?” The mountain king asked with an arched brow, earning the newcomer’s perplexed stare. “I–yes, why?” “One might think such a meeting of great importance would spur punctuality instead of finding that retrieving an iced latte from Valarbucks as being a greater use of your time.” There was barely a beat of silence as the words had left Thorin’s lips before the newcomer opened his mouth with that tone of false niceties escaping it. “Looks like I’m not the only one who’s yet to have his coffee this morning,” Bilbo grouched before promptly taking a sip of that oh-so-important latte of his and earning a few stifled chuckles from the table. Except from the head of it.

TRSB 2022 Art #33 : Harmony

My entry for @tolkienrsb 2022! @thehobbits has cooked up an accompanying fic that is so very soft and sweet it is bound to give you cavities once it’s released on the 9th of September!! 

This was my first time doing a collab like this and I couldn’t have asked for a nicer person to work with! We both have a love for the found-family, heartfelt moments in the Hobbit. The whole event felt like a love letter to that sentiment I jus love these guys so
