Janus’s 100% Foolproof Five-Step Plan To Win Patton’s Heart

Remus skipped up to the door of the Morales household, completely aware, but impudently ignoring the two pairs of eyes burning a hole in the back of his head. Since Patton was the most familiar with Remus, it was decided that Remus would invite him to go to the mall with the three of them, so J-anus and Virgin were waiting in the car. Remus of course had rolled the windows down for them (it was summer in Florida; Remus wasn’t a monster!). 

He rang the doorbell for only a second or two longer than necessary, suppressing the urge to keep pressing it until he got a response, he needed to make a good impression after all (ignoring the fact that he’s been to Patton’s house before and was obnoxious each and every time he came to pick up Roman). It wasn’t long before Patton’s mom was answering the door.  

“Oh! Hello, Remus. I’m surprised to see you.” 

“Hi Mrs. Morales! Is Patton here?” Remus asked, giving her his best, most innocent smile.  

“I’m sorry dear, but he just left. He said he was heading to your house; I’m surprised he didn’t text you first.” 

Well… Remus hadn’t thought of that. He pulled his phone out to find that he did indeed have a text from Patton. Whoopsie doodles.  

“Oops,” Remus grinned sheepishly. “Guess I’ll go meet him at my house. Thanks Mrs. Morales!” 

“Goodbye, Remus!” 

Remus skipped all the way back to the car, ignoring the suspicious looks Janny-Jan and Virgie-poo were shooting at him through the open windows.  

“Well?” Janus asked impatiently as soon as Remus opened the car door.  

“Pat-a-doodle-doo went to my house,” Remus replied, starting the car. “He texted me earlier.” 

“Remus!” Virgil hissed.  

“Proving we listen to him is on the list!” 

“Yeah, but it’s step three,” Remus waved him off. “How was I supposed to know you meant listen to him now?” 

“Because that’s how a relationship works!” Janus fired back. “Any relationship!” 

“We’re so screwed!” Virgil whined, throwing his hood over his head and sinking down as far in his seat as he dared while simultaneously being afraid of the car getting into an accident.  

“Chill, guys, we’ll just go meet him at my house!” 

Patton was not at Remus’s house when they got there, instead, Remus found another text waiting for him on his phone.

Dad switch au

Most fics have the light sides and dark sides living in different mindscapes/parts of the mindscape (?) and I was thinking. Let's imagine they get along (ish) but still live in different places. One day Dee is complaining how hard it is to take care of his dark sons (he includes Virgil because he sometimes visits) and Patton is like 'It can't be THAT bad. Dee raises an eyebrow and tells Patton that if he is SO sure, they can switch for a few days. Patton agrees.

Deceit arrives at the light mindscape and announces that Patton is gonna be absent for a little while. Do not bother him. Or me, for that matter. And proceeds to throw himself on the couch and take a well deserved nap.

Virgil shrugs, but Roman and Logan look at each other warily before nodding.

Later on, Roman pokes him and Deceit grumbles. What did I say about bothering me?? Roman pouts. Do you want to watch a movie?? Deceit sighs but agrees. Roman proceeds to show his choices and Dee makes a face at Moana, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and The little mermaid. Roman thinks he will change his mind until he says: I'm more of a Princess and the Frog or Lion King fan? Roman lights up like a Christmas tree and summons said movies plus Pinoccio.

They have a movie marathon with Roman acting out parts of the movies. Deceit enjoys a night without watching Remus reenacting the Saw movies or screeching like the ghost/demon on the tv. Instead he cuddles with Roman (who completely forgets his worries about Deceit).

The next morning Dee has breakfast ready, the others are a bit put off by not being asked what they wanted beforehand but it's whatever because Dee made pancakes.

In the evening Deceit and Logan get into a debate of sorts and are standing on opposite sides of the living room. Virgil and Roman are watching them as if it was a tennis match. Eating popcorn.

Virgil goes to visit Patton at the dark mindscape because he misses him, he accepts Roman's request of delivering a card to him to let Patton know he misses him too and Logan sends his regards.

Virgil steps into the dark sides living room and all he can see is chaos.

Depression is lying on the table, in a puddle of his own tears.

Anger is weirdly calmed, attention enraptured by a lava lantern.

But it's Patton running around trying to catch Remus that makes him falter. He watches as Patton gets a hold of his feet and drags him to a door he knows leads to the bathroom. Remus screeching like he's being killed at the time.

He hears Patton yell STAY before he comes out of the bathroom, panting. His clothes are a complete mess and hair dirty with god knows what. He looks up at Virgil.

'... Did you know Remy comes here sometimes?'

'uh, yes?'

'That makes five people to take care of. Five. I haven't figured out how to get Depression off the table. He's been there since I arrived. Just yesterday I could finally entertain Anger so he stopped climbing stuff and knocking glasses. And now I'm finally getting Remus to take a bath... Dee gave me a list of instructions and it was like five pages long. I thought he was kidding and I can't remember where I put it!'

'Do you... Want me to get Dee?'

'NO! I WANT THIS KIDDOS TO LIKE ME BACK' whimpers Patton.

'Alright... I'll get Depression to his room... Anger is good so...'

Janus as an absolute disaster dad

Janus just isn’t quite sure what he’s doing, but surely fake-it-til-you-make-it will work here.

He’s like bird dad trying to feed his chicks whole mice; he’s trying his best and learning eventually.

Virgil and Remus probably had to look after themselves more than they should have, but they’re well aware that Janus is trying and will always make time to help or learn how to do better.

Janus would definitely be more lax than Patton, considering Remus likely gave him a thorough crash course on Side durability (object permanence) and whether something can kill them (nope) at one point or another. It’s probably fine they’re very responsible at least half the time.

Personally I enjoy the dark side angst of them making it work. They’re all equally a disaster in canon, with the added emphasis of their traits, so it’s easy to picture any of them as a little lost on how to be responsible for three whole lives. (Except maybe dadmus because I like making him run on cartoon logic, and competent adult remus is funny) It definitely becomes funnier if you picture them all the same age, as well as closer to what Patton’s doing in canon. I’m always a sucker for the kid sides though.
