Cornwall 2024 - Tag 18

Ladies and Gentlemen!

Heute kümmern wir uns einmal um die Zucht von englischen Vollblutpferden und dafür fahren wir zum Godolphin House, das glücklicherweise heute ebenfalls vom National Trust verwaltet wird und von daher auch mit unserem Touring Pass kostenlos besichtigt werden kann.

Vor vielen, vielen Jahren, als ich ein junges Mädchen war, fiel mir in unserer örtlichen Bücherei-Zweigstelle ein Buch in die Hände.

Da ich schon von frühester Kindheit an total Pferdebegeistert war, lieh ich dieses Buch natürlich sofort aus: König des Windes (King of the Wind), der amerikanischen Schriftstellerin Marguerite Henry, das 1948 erschienen ist.

Das Buch beschreibt die Lebensgeschichte des Hengstes Goldophin Barb (* ca. 1724/1725; † Weihnachten 1753). Ein Berberhengst, der lange Zeit auch als Godolphin Arabian bekannt war, da er ursprünglich für ein Arabisches Vollblut gehalten wurde, gilt neben Byerley Turk und Darley Arabian als einer der 3 Stammväter des Englischen Vollbluts

Der Hengst trug ursprünglich den Namen Sham (Stern, weil er eben besagten Stern hatte) und gehörte zu einer Gruppe von Pferden, die der Bey von Tunis an König Ludwig XV. schenkte. Pferde als staatstragende Geschenke zu überreichen erfreute sich damals großer Beliebtheit - die Isländer machen das teilweise noch heute

Natürlich konnten die Herrscher all die geschenkten Pferde nicht selbst behalten oder sie gefielen teilweise auch gar nicht, weswegen es absolut üblich war, sie weiter zu geben. Ein ebenso berühmtes Beispiel wären da die Orlow Traber, die ebenfalls von arabischen Staatsgeschenken - in diesem Fall an Katharina II (die Große) - abstammen und die an Graf Orlow (ihren Liebhaber) weiter verschenkt wurden.

So fand auch Sham vor den Augen des französischen Königs keine Gnade und gelangte über mehrere Umwege in den Besitz des Engländers Edward Cox, der ihn als Deckhengst für sein Gestüt in Derbyshire übernahm.

Nach Cox' Tod 1733 kam der Hengst in die Hände von Roger Williams, der ihn an Francis Godolphin, 2. Earl of Godolphin vermittelte, dem er auch den Namen Godolphin verdankte, unter dem er bis heute weltweit bekannt ist. Rennställe, Zuchtverbände, ja selbst eine Parfummarke sind immer noch nach Godolphin Barb benannt.

Die Familie Godolphin war eine der einflussreichsten Familien in der Grafschaft Cornwall und konnte ihre Stammlinie bis in die Zeit der normannischen Eroberung Englands 1066 durch William I. zurückführen.

Der Name Godolphin leitet sich von Godolghan ab, kornisch für  weißer Adler, der auch das Wappen der Familie ziert.

Das Godolphin Estate ist ein altes Anwesen aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Es wurde ursprünglich von der Familie Godolghan als Wasserburg erbaut, die auf einem 4,5 Hektar großen Gelände angelegt wurde.

Im späten 15. Jahrhundert änderte sich der Familienname in Godolphin und es wurden Zinn- und Kupfervorkommen unter dem Land abgebaut und ausgebeutet.

Einige der frühesten Zinn- und Kupferbergbaustandorte in Cornwall liegen innerhalb der Grenzen des Godolphin-Anwesens. Der spätere Reichtum der Familie rührte von diesem lokalen Zinnbergbau her.

Das heutige Godolphin House stammt aus dem 15. Jahrhundert und war bis zum 18. Jahrhundert das Zuhause der Familie Godolphin.

Von seinen Anfängen als bescheidenes Herrenhaus an wurde es von Generationen späterer Godolphins vergrößert, bis es im Jahr 1689 über 100 Zimmer und 40 Schornsteine verfügte.

Als der Earl Godolphin 1766 starb, ging das Anwesen an die Herzöge von Leeds über. Ein Großteil des Hauses wurde 1805 abgerissen, und was übrig blieb, wurde zu einem einfachen Bauernhaus umgestaltet.

Es wurde 1929 aus der Vergessenheit gerettet und schließlich an den National Trust übergeben.

Die Innenräume sind mit mehr oder weniger antiken Möbeln und Wandbehängen eingerichtet. Einige der Möbel stammen aber tatsächlich noch ursprünglich aus dem Godolphin Estate.

Der Prunkstück des Hauses ist der Speisesaal mit Leinenvertäfelung und einem Holzdach aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. An der Wand hängt ein Gemälde von John Wooton aus dem Jahr 1731, das den Hengst Godolphin Barb zeigt.

Das Königszimmer im Westflügel verfügt über eine fein geschnitzte Tür, die 1604 für die Hochzeit von Sir William Godolphin geschaffen wurde. Im Königszimmer befinden sich außerdem ein prächtig geschnitzter jakobinischer Kaminsims.

Die elisabethanischen Ställe stehen noch immer und Teile der formalen Gärten aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, die dazu gedacht waren Könige und Würdenträger zu beeindrucken, wurden in ihrer ursprünglichen Gestaltung wieder hergestellt.

Interessanterweise gab es scheinbar damals schon automatische Tränken für die Tiere - was für ein Komfort!

Man kann sich leicht vorstellen, dass sich die Bassetts, Warleggans, Poldarks und die anderen Poldark-Charaktere hier treffen. Ein triftiger Grund, warum die Vorderseite des Hauses tatsächlich in einigen Poldark-Episoden Verwendung fand. 

Das weitere Anwesen ist aufgrund seiner Fülle an historischen Minenschächten und anderen Überresten des industriellen Erbes ebenfalls eine Erkundung wert. Heute sind die wichtigsten Minenschächte durch kreisförmige kornische Hecken, sogenannte Collars, geschützt.

Der Garten ist das ganze Jahr über geöffnet und im alten, umgebauten Schweinestall gibt es eine Teestube, die Sandwiches, Kuchen, Kekse und heiße Getränke serviert. 

Das Haus selbst kann jedoch immer nur Anfang jeden Monats für einige, wenige Tage besichtigt werden.

Die übrige Zeit vermietet der National Trust die Räume als Ferien Unterkunft, was die stellenweise moderne Einrichtung erklärt.

Allerdings fürchte ich, dass man beim dauerhaften Anblick dieses "geschmackvollen" Kronleuchters möglicherweise Augenkrebs bekommt.

Wir denken noch etwas darüber nach, ob die Anmietung dieses Anwesens für den nächsten Cornwall Urlaub eventuell eine Option sein könnte.

Vielleicht finden sich ja noch Freunde und Bekannte, die sich dafür erwärmen können ...

Tuni was born into the Kingdom of Osirian, a city floating above the clouds. Years ago, the Osirians had eliminated the wild and savage beasts that once terrorized the land, being blessed by the gods and given wings. It is said that one day, the gods would descend from the heavens and give the gift of immortality next.

Tuni knows this to be a lie.

The gods have spoken, ordering Tuni to execute every paladin that claims to speak for them, unwilling to let their names be taken in vain any longer. Tuni will not fail them. But while carrying out the duty given, Tuni comes to find the land below is not a savage place, meeting the fae people. They were the “beasts” in the stories, and Tuni realizes they need help.

Bonding together with the fae prince, Tuni vows to keep her promise to the gods, and restore the fae to their rightful place.

I’ve had this idea in my mind for most of 2023, although it’s been changed a lot as to what it would focus on. I started drafting this in January of 2024, when it reached its final idea. It hasn’t really taken any inspiration from any books, although the underground city the fae live in is inspired by Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. The design of the Osirians themself are similar to Eliatrope from Wakfu and Dofus.

Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl (1999 dir. Katsuhiro Ishii) This is my movie. Movie of all time. Rotten Tomatoes can eat my ass with their 25% rating. A yakuza on the run for stealing from the boss from a wacko cast of assassins with a clever girl in tow. It's what Tarantino wishes he could make.

Heat (1995 dir. Michael Mann) I mean, come on. AlPacino, Robert DeNiro, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashely Judd, Mykelti Williamson? This movie could not fail even if that was the goal.

The Accountant (2001 dir. Ray McKinnon) It's a short film, and Ray is actually from the town I've lived in the last twenty years, so I have a soft spot for him. Ray is so captivating as an actor, and this film was something else. It's somber but still moving.

Straight Talk (1992 dir. Barnet Kellman) It's a cornball romcom, but it's DOLLY PARTON'S romcom. I love this movie to pieces. I even have one of the original movie posters. Unfortunately I have to also look at James Woods' face lol.

Tombstone (1993 dir. George P. Cosmatos) Another that's like, be serious. I love westerns and the outlaw/lawman yeehaw bullshit. You know how it is with yeehaw bullshit.

Deadland Inferno/Zアイランド (2015 Hiroshi Shinagawa) An action zombie comedy. This one is for the yakuza gworls (gn). Basic we have a plan to get to safety from zombies and hijinks ensuse. Sho Aikawa, SHINGO TSURUMI MY BABY BOY BABY, Hideo Nakano, Hitoshi Ozawa, Sawa Suzuki. So like...dead souls but you're playing as Takasugi, Sagawa, Shibusawa, and Kuze LOL

The Bridges of Madison County (1995 dir. Clint Eastwood) Romance between an older couple, bittersweet partings, it's everything. I'm a closet die hard romantic.

My Dead Dad (2021 dir. Fabio Frey) I watched this for Raymond Cruz and wasn't expecting much but it really hit me. For reasons of my own dead dad that I was estranged from, but there were so many pieces that were like snapshots of my own teens years. The skate parks and ugly fucking skate shoes, weed, sour beer. It's also beautifully shot. It was my movie of 2022.

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997 dir. George Armitage) The soundtrack fucking rips. Probably one of my favorites ever. Joe Strummer put his whole pussy in it. A black comedy, John Cusack & Minnie Driver? Hot stuff

The Devil's Advocate (1997 dir. Taylor Hackford) MY GAY AWAKENING, A MOVIE I HAD NO BUSINESS WATCHING UNDER THE AGE OF TEN. I was obsessed with this movie. Tamara Tunie only had a small part man....she changed my life forever. If you love the tropes of good and evil, the devil, lawyers, Keanu Reeves with a terrible southern drawl, watch this :)

Sources & Significance 1_1.9 - Applying Knowledge critically

As promised all the way in Blog 1 of this series I will now explore one of my favourite games through the lense of all the concepts we’ve explored so far.

Spec-Ops : The Line Spec-Ops: The Line is 2012 Third person military Shooter. You are part of a 3-man military squad invading an isolated and occupied Dubai to find a former comrade and his squadron who have gone radio silent and find themselves trapped inside Dubai.

Narrative Spec-Ops follows a ‘Vector with Side Branches’ Narrative Structure with an intentionally generic premise. You will make choices that affect largely only the following section and have no bearing on the overarching storyline. However these choices will help the player feel engaged and near the end of the game will help your broader understanding of the situation you find yourself in. You will also make a choice at the end that will determine 1 of 3 possible endings. It often puts interactivity at the forefront. Forcing you into extremely stressful and morally questionable situations and asking you to respond quickly. This does an extremely effective job at putting you in the shoes of the main character as he “falls from grace” inch by inch. Your Melee Takedowns become more and more brutal, your character becomes more and more dirtied and haggard as the story goes on, your colleagues lose respect for you and eventually madness takes you and you end up dooming the very people you came to save. In this sense interactivity is integral in making you feel responsible as the narrative throws you around until you become lost in the chaos and find yourself little by little pulled away from the person you were and coming face to face with the monster you’ve become.

Semiotics Symbolism is strong in Spec-Ops: The Line in fact even the menu screen highlights your descent from ‘American hero’ to War Criminal.

Transmedia It is a loose adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel ‘Heart of Darkness’ and in a more direct sense it’s Frances Ford Coppola adaptation ‘Apocalypse Now’. Following the same descent into darkness, but adding to the feeling of horror through direct interactivity. You are responsible, not just a passive observer. Additionally the game breaks he fourth wall continuously, asking you if you feel like a hero in the loading screens or how many US Soldiers you have killed already.

Identity & Culture Spec-Ops: The Line explores and deconstructs the ‘White Saviour’ myth. You arrive at the beginning of the game as a heroic and upstanding military man who believes in his ability to do good for his country and save your comrades as well as the people of Dubai. But more and more you descend into the true darkness of this conflict, every choice you make, no matter how seemingly good natured and noble, ends up making things worse for yourself, the conflict and the people of Dubai until the lines become so blurred that you can not see a way back to the person you were.
