i like to think that because a lot of expletives are based on anatomy/bodily functions (at least in english) that glatorian and agori would have such language and that MU inhabitants would be confused by it since they don't have those same bodily functions

Did you like my fic "It's Just Paint"? Do you like explorations of gender and love in the Matoran Universe? Do you like some of the best writing in the fandom? Then read KDNX's fic, "A Different Kind of Unity"!
Seriously, this is one of the fics that makes me glad I am in the Bionicle fandom in 2023; an earnest exploration of what it means to be a Matoran and what it means to love in a world that de-emphasizes that passion, whether it's for yourself, your work, or other people, so much.
Laying on his bed, he found he could hardly sleep. He tossed and turned on the stone slab, staring at the ceiling of his domed hut, casting his eyes to the overstuffed trophy rack on the other side of the room, then to the fabric doll of a blue Matoran at the foot of his bed. He sat up and held the doll gingerly - light blue chest, blue hands and feet, and a mask with a long trunk: the Kanohi Huna, Macku’s mask of choice.

After arriving in Metru Nui, the Turaga began to occasionally call each of the Toa ‘brother’ or ‘sister’, partially an acknowledgment of their past lives, partially to acknowledge the success that the Toa Nuva have earned, and largely as camaraderie in the bond that they share as Toa or former Toa.
Tahu outwardly acts like it’s only right that he’d be addressed as such, trying to make others believe that he accepts it in stride, but inwardly, he is humbled by the acknowledgment. The Turaga see through his bluster and appreciate his humility.
Onua is outwardly quite humble and appreciative when it happens, but inwardly, he doesn’t quite see himself as being worthy of being addressed by such wise beings as the Turaga, who he holds in high esteem, so he usually comes off as a little bashful when he responds in kind.
The Turaga started being reluctant to call Gali ‘sister,’ largely because she reacts to the title, by pushing herself a little too hard to prove that she is worthy of the acknowledgment. She once to stayed up all night for two days while repairing an aqueduct in Ga-Metru, and when she could barely keep awake during a meeting with the Turaga, everyone immediately decided that Nokama should not call Gali sister anymore.
Kopaka typically glances at whoever called him this and slightly nods, sort of a polite acknowledgment, but those who know him best, especially Nuju, know that he is actually quite touched by the endearment, and he has to be stoic to keep up appearances. Whenua, having the best hearing, has multiple times heard Kopaka whisper ‘thank you, brother’ in response to Nuju or Vakama.
Takanuva started out being quite flustered when he was called brother by any of the elders, still being unused to being called brother even by the other Toa, but as he grew used to his powers and his responsibilities, he began to accept it in stride. He still won’t return the title, since he still uncomfortable with the idea of calling any of the Turaga by that term, but he is still moved by the respect they show him.
Lewa was delighted when they started calling him brother, But he’s also somewhat amused, often laughing when they call him that. To Lewa, it’s still difficult to imagine these wise old beings as Toa heroes, so he can’t always keep himself from laughing. Even so, he never fails to respectfully return the honorific.
The Toa Mahri have varying degrees of acceptance of the honorific. Jaller is proud to carry the title, and Hahli is eager to prove herself worthy of the honorific (though not as much as Gali). Kongo is a bit smug about it, Nuparu takes it in stride, and Hewkii tends to get sort of ‘aw, shucks’ about it. All of them are somewhat muted in their response, mostly because Nuju was the first to call them brother and sister. They all understand that Nuju calls them that as much as he does in memory of Matoro, and his regret that he never got to see his friend as a Toa and call him ‘brother’ in person. The Mahri learned the bird speak for Brother and Sister, and they always call Nuju brother right back.
And the Turaga universally agreed never to call Pohatu ‘brother’ again shortly after the first few times. After then, he began exclusively referring to the Turaga as brother or sister, always with extreme enthusiasm that the elders often find exasperating and often demanding fist bumps from any Turaga he encounters for days after. Most of them just quietly stopped calling him that, except for Onewa, who continued occasionally calling him brother when he felt he had earned it, but after Pohatu found out that Turaga Dume had been a Toa, the seven had an official meeting where they unanimously voted not to call Pohatu brother anymore. Matau still occasionally calls him that, though, because he personally thinks it’s fucking hilarious when Pohatu tries to fist bump Nuju.

You know its true that out of the four stone toa we know Onewa is the exception due to being An Asshat but i think we could focus more on Pouks being the white sheep of a flock of goats. Hes the only one of them who was like, formally employed and working an actual job as a toa. His siblings are just his coworkers. I dont think he knows a sport. He was so glad Pohatu and Hewkii were nothing like Onewa for all of twelve seconds before dreadfully discovering that they are exactly like Onewa, just in previously unimaginable ways, such as the batshit circumstances of their toahood and accidentally kicking a ball into each others face at mach speeds for fun

The Turaga Movie Designs, Ranked
#6 Matau
Tumblr media
Weirdly the most human looking mask but rendered without any kind of expression. They didn't even give him eyebrows. Looks like he overdid the botox and sends him straight into uncanny valley territory. I get that he doesn't get any speaking lines and has barely any screentime, but contrasted with the amount of care put into his Matoran form it's a bit of a sad effort. The gold highlights are a nice idea in theory that link to his Toa form, but the blend of gold and grey gives him a weirdly discoloured look. 2/10
#5 Whenua
Tumblr media
Eh. Not a lot of personality coming through here. His mask is basically identical to the Ruru wearing Matoran. Just Some Guy really. 3/10
#4 Nokama
Tumblr media
She at least has facial expressions. Her mask was one of the simpler designs in set form but they've stripped it of all detail- maybe the designers thought the curved lines on the cheeks made her look too old or unfeminine? Eh. Some personality, but still a little bland. Don't look too closely at the body armour. 5/10
#3 Onewa
Tumblr media
Now we're getting somewhere. Most of the details of his mask have been kept, and I like how the ridges above the eyes became Big Craggy Eyebrows. Manages to avoid the uncanny valley that Matau fell into. Has personality but not too ostentatious. Fits the character pretty well 7/10
#2 Vakama
Tumblr media
Yeah, he's the Main Guy out of the Turaga so naturally he got more attention to detail. We make fun of his big monobrow but it really helps sell the character, as does his long pharoah beard. He has the vent covering his mouth but they still managed to make it expressive. The stylized fire staff is nice too. Forehead's a little tall but that's really my only gripe. 9/10
#1 Nuju
Tumblr media
Looks like a horrid little owl man. Strong gargoyle energy. Has one expression and it's Thinking About Murder All Day. Character designers understood the assignment exactly. Mata Nui's perfect creature 1000/10

One thing I feel we absolutely got cheated on with bionicle, is that we never actually saw anyone get to enjoy that sweet post reformation peace.
Of course there's the inevitable confusion and mild chaos from two fundamentally different types of organisms trying to build a society from the ground up-
But I want too see everybody just... take up a hobby or passion project now that for the firts time in millenia, they can.
I want to see Hewkii organize the first Spherus Magnan Kohlii League.
I want to see Takanuva discover the joys of community theater.
I want Onewa to open a sculpture studio.
I want to see Whenua and Kiina go full indiana jones together because you know they'd do it.
I want to see Nokama pick up teaching again, not to keep any remaining knowledge from being lost to time, but to actually inspire students to learn and grow.
I want to see Jaller take his first Vacation in 1,000 years. Ackar too.
And for the Nuva, give them the time to explore and actually make hobbies to enjoy!
I want Nuparu to open up a workshop and become the Nikola Tesla of bionicle that he deserved to be.
Let Kongu start a darn gukko ranch.
Just, let them rest. please.
Oh, and Nuju should be followed by curious Agori kids who want to learn to speak bird.

Couple of Turaga - 1
I don't think I've drawn the Turaga in a long while, but I've def been thinking more of how I want to try and handle their designs.
As well as you might've noticed a big change to Onewa I've made - I've made Onewa female. It's prob something not everyone will agree with, but that's fine with me. Might also mention too that I want to make Nuju female. I just think a bit of gender equilibrium could be nice :') But still, I do hope you enjoy these designs, I think I did a nice job~

Shenanigans related to my post “the turaga / Toa Metru share a house”:
Whenua, at home because he injured his leg and should rest, is bored. He tries to “escape” because he wants to get back to work. His colleagues found a fascinating fossil that he wants to take a closer look at. Having miscrocopes again is the dream.
So he sneaks out of his room, trying not to put any weight on his injured leg. And is foiled when a familar name shouts his name.
Onewa stomps over to him, demanding that he goes back to his bed. Whenua snips back that he’s not the boss of him and can’t order him around. Onewa can pick him up, however. Which he does, making Whenua cuss in surprise. He carries him into their shared living space and puts him on a blanket and pillow pile. Since it’s on the ground, Whenua can’t stand up with his messed up leg.
Whenua brings up that his problem persists. He’s bored, he can’t sleep, he can’t enjoy reading at the moment, everybody else is busy, so what he’s supposed to do?
Onewa gains a gleam in his eyes that makes him consider if he should’ve said anything. His brother parts with “I’ll be right back”, which says nothing to Whenua. So he has to lie there - okay, the pillows are comfortable but still - and wait.
To his surprise, Onewa comes back carrying another of their siblings. Nuju is fuming as he puts him down next to him on the pillows. Onewa points at him.
“He’s still dizzy after cracking his head on the floor yesterday. Keep him here so that he rests, he was all night up trying to stargaze. If you can get him to sleep, all the better. I don’t care how you do it.”
His finger wanders to Whenua.
“Nuju, sleep on Whenua. Cling to him. I don’t care either, just keep him in one place and that leg immobile. He tried to walk a few minutes ago and could’ve injured it even more.”
Whenua and Nuju stare at him, then at each other.
“That’s cheating,” Whenua says because it is. Oh, it is clever. And devious. The two of them will keep each other on the bed as much from pettiness (I can’t leave so you won’t either!) as from worry about each other. They won’t leave because it means nobody would watch out for the other. And when - not if, but when - they start bickering, it’ll keep them occupied for hours.
“This isn’t a kohlii game. You can’t cheat at recovery.” Onewa dares to roll his eyes.
“You two should definitely know better after caring for many matoran who should’ve been resting and instead made it worse by working too early. You used to complain a lot about that. Notice the irony?”
Whenua definitely does. Nuju glares harder.
“Oh, go chew on a rock.”
“Glad that you agree, brothers! I’ll come back later to check on you.”

I'll be real, I totally get how 196 works on Reddit, but can't quite grok how it would work on Tumblr. Do I post whenever I enjoy a 196? Whenever I filter by 196 and browse? I'm sure I'm thinking too hard, and none of this is enforceable, but it's the thought that counts.

I really enjoyed last year's Bionicle Advent Calendar, when I wrote at least a snippet of fanfic every day, but I just don't have the time this year. Most of last year's was written in the slow times at work, and this year there just aren't any slow times. But I wanted to do something again, so you're going to get pictures and probably some descriptive/explanatory text. (Talking endlessly isn't "work" like writing fiction can be. Though, if we're lucky, maybe we'll get SOME ficlets later on.)
Tumblr media
Today we're going back to the beginning! Onewa was my first Bionicle, the one who started it all. He wasn't even mine--not fully. My brother and I split him.
We were LEGO fans, solidly entrenched in it ag that point, but we had minimal Technic or interest in it and had passed on Throwbots and Roboriders completely and though we would do the same with Bionicles. The comics were kind of cool, but we were System fans, minifig fans. It just wasn't for us.
But our Mom knew we loved all kinds of LEGO and that we weren't very discriminating about it, so when she was Christmas shopping (this was October 2001), she found a marked-down Onewa in the clearance section and figured two or three dollars was worth a flier.
Onewa had been marked down because he'd been opened and one of his 5-module axles was missing. We stole a 4-module axle somewhere in our System sets and he was good to go. Our entire perspective on Bionicle flipped with him in our hands. What had looked (in our narrow, childhood judgement) as "weird" in the magazines and catalogues now looked really cool and fun in person.
A couple weeks later, we were sold on Bionicle enough that I "bought out" my brother's half and he put the money into buying a Turaga Matau. We also split a mask pack: a brown Pakari (mine) and a medium blue Ruru (my brother's). We were hooked, and we'd remain that way until about 2004: the colour change and the shift to Metru Nui matched a belated growing up, but it would still be a long, slow slide to my true Dark Ages, starting around 2009ish.
Because Onewa was the first and because we didn't really absorb all the media pre-movies, and because the Turaga had less real development as characters before 2004, I never pictured Onewa as the abrasive a-hole we got in LoMN. He was more of a Gandalf mentor type, and he's still kind of there for me. Reconciling him to LoMN has been a fertile ground for fiction for me.
Another big thing that LoMN contrasted with in our games was that Onewa had been the leader of our Turaga! If it was supposed to be clear, before 2004, that Vakama was the team leader, it was lost on us. I don't think we thought the Turaga HAD a leader, and Onewa, wise and strong (and the first one we had), got to be the team leader.
