[In 2010], CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting paid $771 million to the NCAA for television rights to the 2011 men’s basketball tournament alone. That’s three-quarters of a billion dollars built on the backs of amateurs—on unpaid labor. The whole edifice depends on the players’ willingness to perform what is effectively volunteer work.

1983: XY – UNRAVELLED – Interview TV Tednik (TV Weekly), RTV Ljubljana
“It was a plan, a political strategy, ‘how to get rid of Laibach, how to do it in a fiery way – by publicly announcing them on the main TV program’. Once they appeared, they ceased to exist, because the angry reaction of the entire nation would force them. And yes, we came to the interview in our military uniforms, which on the mostly black and white TV monitors of that time looked – black and white.
We said: ‘Okay, let’s make a show, let’s not move in front of the refrigerator at all. We’re just giving our answers in a kind of political, manifesto manner’. It was quite shocking to watch it on TV, although nothing we said was really problematic, everything was basically in the manifesto, and we even quoted Yugoslav politicians in a fiery and positive manner. The interviewer edited the interview further and literally led to a public lynching at the end, which of course was soon considered excessive abuse of the media. Nevertheless, Laibach was officially banned for the next five years.
After the broadcast of this interview, a huge public debate broke out, which continued for months, even years later. Slavoj Žižek himself also wrote several articles on the subject. He designed the whole thing as an over-identification – Laibach is actually more communist and more “grand” than the state system itself."

First half here: https://www.tumblr.com/empyrean11/755477272309415936/my-list-of-first-first-half-jays
Commence the second half ... er, highlights?
Joey Votto and Bo are both hurt immediately out of all star break? CURSED
All Star Break! Vladdy is our only all-star. He doesn't participate in HR Derby, but does wear a Teo Jays jersey. Teo wins! 🥹
Stewy finally is allowed to play, makes 2 great catches in the bottom of the 9th
KK's on waivers, plays spectacularly anyway
Ernie 3-run homers on back-to-back days, but everyone gets injured (Bo, Varsh, half the pitchers in the whole minor league system, 3rd base coach)
KK announces he will retire after this season
Ernie pitches an inning against the Rays when the Jays are down by 13 runs. He's the only Jays pitcher of the day who doesn't give up a run. Spencer walks in the 9th inning when they're down by 13. Come on, you can't do that.
ERNIE WALK OFF!!!
Gausman complete game!!
Stewy's first hit, it's a double!!
Yariel has a really, really bad game. Optioned to AAA. Immediately recalled because so many guys have just been traded
Addison's first HR!! 🚀
Ricky Tiedeman needs TJ surgery 😥
TRADE DEADLINE WEEK WAS SO AWFUL. Jano and KK and Kikuchi and Yimi Garcia and Trevor Richards and Justin Turner and IKF and giant Nate
Loperfido joins the Jays, wears Jano's #9 and we weep again.
The roomies have adopted Loperfido
Let's just intentionally walk Aaron Judge all the time.
Spencer and Davis got haircuts, I am inconsolable
Joey Votto is actually actually playing with the Bisons!
Varsho makes incredible catches every damn day
Springer hockey jersey giveaway, everyone is so cute
traded Cam Eden 😭 to the yankees 😭
Vladdy's hit streak ends at 22 games. He has been INCREDIBLE!! PAY! THE! MAN!
De Los Santos first MLB hit & RBI! he's immediately sent back to AAA.
Here comes Will Wagner! BLAZING HOT start!!
Joey Votto retires, announces via a 9-second Instagram video filmed in the Bisons parking lot (because, of course he would)
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th. Loperfido HR to tie it, Barger to WALK IT OFF
There is a new celebration. Bird cage? Hand on head like a unicorn? Stomping? "The Georgie"?? The boys are weird but are having SO much fun
Bowden with 8 no-hit innings!! Bitter Angel guy says he was "hittable and not special" - Chris Bassitt makes it known that he does not agree with a handmade sign on the broadcast next day.
The Danny Jansen 😭😭 / time travel weirdness game. Jays win both ends of this double header-ish thing. George Springer can't stop hitting home runs.
"Players weekend" Ernie has a pencil bat!
Stewy sent back to Buffalo 😥 Lukes (so much beard) comes up.
Addison wrestles alligators and bears?!
The boys trounce the twins 15-0, it was SO MUCH FUN. Bonus: Ernie bats left-handed to protect his sore ankle
Leo dives thru the netting and into the stands to make a ridiculous catch!!
Bowden with 8 no-hit innings again! What is this guy?!
KIRKY WALK-OFF
Davis is back babyyy (he's using Jano's old bats?!?!)
Leo gets HBP every day
BO IS BACK!!! REUNITED WITH VLADDY 💕
Bo breaks his finger in fielding practice literally the next day. WTF
Will Wagner and Varsho also need surgery. Stewy & Clase called up.
Swept at the Trop. Of course.
Everything is bad but tiny bits of light: Clase first MLB HR! Lukes first MLB HR!
Jano returns to the dome. SOBBING. Danny & Kirky, Danny & Davis WAILING SOBS, BRING HIM HOME
Bo's broken finger needs surgery too. EVERYBODY GETS A FREE SURGERY!
Vladdy ends the year with 199 hits, because we can't have nice things.
Sure sure, let's limp to the end of the season getting swept by the ... Marlins?!?

What happened to Korean animation???
I can not stress this enough, but what is it with the Korean animation on most Burbank-made cartoons produced after 2015 looking so… slow and stiff???
There're LOTS more on 2s animation timing... and less inbetweening, while characters, props and effects are not as loosely drawn as they used to be before 2016.
Look at this example below of what a modern cartoon looks like when animated in Korea:
Bernard Williams ain't selling the acting well now; is he?
That episode of Craig of the Creek, "Creature Feature", was made in 2020; it was animated by Rough Draft Korea Co., Ltd. — an animation studio founded by Gregg Vanzo as a cheaper means for quality animation on none other than The Ren & Stimpy Show (Don't believe me? Thad Komorowski will tell you).
He's moving too slow. This shot is all on 2s. His arms move stiffly, and his head bobs up and down just a little bit. It doesn't sell the specific emotions he's expressing as richly as they could... compared to something like classic Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon shows of the past. The overseas animators should listen to the audio track, the recorded dialogue. That's what they did on on Ren & Stimpy!
Now let us to go back 10 years before Rough Draft animated that episode of Craig of the Creek... to another Cartoon Network Studios original that Rough Draft animated, the Sym-Bionic Titan episode "The Phantom Ninja":
LOOK HOW LOOSE AND SMOOTH THIS LITTLE BIT OF ANIMATION IS! ☝
This level of Korean animation quality was normal for TV cartoons back in the 2010s.
This one shot has a healthy balance of on 2s animation and on 1s animation.
It's just Ilana Lunis and Octus doing a bit of a... I don't know... a shrug... giving Lance a certain look. Not even talking in this shot, nor is it an action sequence, and this little bit of acting looks far better than Craig of the Creek ever animated in general.
Rough Draft also animates on Spongebob and they're struggling but usually excelling on the animation quality overseas.
This applies to cartoons made and aired before 2016 where post-2105 episode/content are the same quality as most post-2015 cartoons shows these days that're animated in Korea; examples are Uncle Grandpa, Samurai Jack Season 5, The Venture Bros. Season 6 onward, We Bare Bears Season 2 onward, and even later Disney TVA shows as Amphibia Season 3, The Owl House (even Luke Weber noticed the degrade in animation quality) and Hailey's On It! (excluding 2/3 of the first episode)... though mostly it involves Warner Bros. Discovery-owned properties - Turner Broadcasting System-based ones namely.
Now what are the reasons for Korean animation quality since 2016?
In the case of some post-2015 episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, the issue might be TIME, since it's a popular franchise which, among other new Nicktoons these days, Nickelodeon is trying to dump out on TV as fast as humanly possible. The Patrick Star Show seems to rarely suffer from this, however; only few episodes like "The Commadore Episode" were animated mostly on 2s and more stiff than loose - there just might not've been time for retakes, although TV and certainly streaming platforms tend to dump a bunch of episodes out all at once. Those that're animated in Korea would probably suffer from this business practice. Why can't we just put new episodes on every Thursday, Friday, or Saturday... with breaks in-between instead of not stopping until the season is over? That reminds me that most [adult swim] shows tend to have 6 or 10 episodes per season.
On the other hand... may be that Korean animators just need a break. Perhaps the Korean overseas facilities need more money... more direction... more communication... more retakes (as if we could actually afford all or any of that with today's gas prices?). Most American cartoons, which are typically animated in California (namely Burbank), are animated overseas in Korea — more so than any other country, Asian or not. Could America be overworking the Koreans? It's a possibility. Additionally, in 2024, there were some leaks that suggested that other studios had people in North Korea contracted for overseas animation work, and work between the US and the weapon-protected North side of Korea is forbidden.
Instead of overworking Korean animators, why not animate domestically here in America? In Burbank? When America had domestic animation for TV shows crippled, Japan became one of the most popular of overseas production facilities... until they became too premium for America, and America had to resort to other Asian countries like Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and in some cases even China. In my opinion, the Philippines can deliver better animation (a bit roughly but still better than Korea for the most part) for the US! Taiwan isn't as involved with Burbank animation anymore, and China rarely does anything except to animate for some shows like Secret Mountain Fort Awesome and Mike Young-era Clifford the Big Red Dog. Speaking of Rough Draft Korea, however: Hanna-Barbera sent John Kricfalusi overseas to Cuckoo's Nest Studio/Wang Film in Taiwan to train the assistant animators there in acting, animation, and layout on the 1980s' episodes (or is it a reboot?) of The Jetsons. All that John K wanted to do was character design, but he ended up doing a lot more on the show — and for an overseas Asian animation production facility prior to the founding of Rough Draft Studios!
What about rigging (puppetry in 2 dimensions), though? The future of quality TV/non-theatrical 2D animation may be in the hands of Canada's and Ireland's finest riggers. Mercury Filmworks, Boulder Media, Lighthouse Studios, Snipple Animation, and Jam Filled Entertainment can deliver better animation through rigging than Korea can do for most hand-drawn shows!
That is unless it's the Spongebob Squarepants franchise of course... that and Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? and... pretty much anything animated by Yearim or Yeson (most of which are adult cartoon sitcoms with rather restricted animation so as not to distract from their comedic wordplay, since those shows are more script-driven anyway).
I asked some people about the current condition of Korean animation to see what they think about that. Maxwell Atoms had a good bit to say...
The What's in My Head? podcast interview with Randy Myers largely benefited from a question I suggested on Twitter/X about the animation quality differences between the first 6 seasons of The Powerpuff Girls and the 2016-2019 PPG "reboot" episodes.
Ariel Vracin-Harrell tweeted that overseas animators often follow the storyboards "religiously", and tiny little micro-poses in storyboards can result in the animation looking "laggy and odd". (Perhaps those Korean animators view the storyboard animatics as key animation?)
Lauren Faust says that you shouldn't animate you storyboards. One example to illustrate effective storyboarding that isn't an animated storyboard animatic is the intro to Batman: The Animated Series.
Another possible reason for stiff Korean animation since 2016 might be that the Korean animators are trying to animate as clean (and thus on-model) as humanly possible.
I'll expand more on this post later.
Tweet thread version here.

ذكرى سنوية 28 لمختبر دكستىر | Happy 28th Anniversary to Dexter's Laboratory

English:
28 Years ago, Dexter’s Laboratory made its debut on Cartoon Network in April 27th in 1996 it's one of my favorite 90's Cartoon Network shows On the occasion of the show’s 28th anniversary, It's one of Cartoon Network's first show They have excellent animation, interesting plot, friendly, charismatic characters like The PowerPuff Girls Original. Dexter is a bespectacled boy-genius who, behind a bookcase in his bedroom, conceals a secret laboratory, which can be accessed by spoken passwords or hidden switches on his bookshelf. Though highly intelligent, Dexter often fails to achieve his goals when he becomes overexcited and careless. His Happy-Go-Lucky sister Dee Dee delights in playing haphazardly in the lab, wreaking havoc with Dexter's inventions. Though seemingly dim-witted, Dee Dee, who is also a talented ballet dancer, can outsmart her brother and even give him helpful advice. I watched it every episode of seasons 1 and 2 on Cartoon Network Arabic, Stardima and Arabic Toons as well like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Codename: Kids Next Door, I’ve drawn seasons 3-4 episodes of Dexter’s Laboratory in seasons 1-2 style And yes, In the Arab countries it was aired for the first time on Spacetoon in 2005-2007 with Syrian Dubbing a.k.a. Venus Centre dub But in 2008, a new dub (which was Lebanese) began to be airing on MBC3, which continued to broadcast with Ajyal TV and It was been launched on Cartoon Network Arabic in October 10, 2010. So I prefer the Lebanese dubbing of the show and Happy 28th Anniversary of Dexter's Laboratory!! This 1994 article in Broadcasting+Cable, a trade magazine, is the only one I can think of that covers the entire sweep of my media career. That is, up through the first phase of producing cartoons. But, the writer (unidentified, sorry) touches on my independent record production era, the promotion and branding work at MTV, the branding company Alan Goodman and I started to work with Nickelodeon and MTV, and then, Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. It’s before the internet age, of course, so no MTV Networks Online, Next New Networks or Frederator Networks.
Thanks go to Hanna-Barbera’s head of public relations, Richard Lewis, who thought Fifth Estate could be suckered into profiling a polymath.
Broadcasting + Cable Magazine June 27, 1994
Fifth Estater: Fred Seibert
Fred Seibert's rise from cutting jazz albums on the cheap to the presidency of children's television powerhouse Hanna-Barbera Inc. is evidence that guts and a willingness to challenge assumptions can pay off.
But Seibert faces a challenge large enough for even his high standards: returning once-dominant cartoon factory Hanna-Barbera to its former glory under new owner Turner Broadcasting Systems.
A musical background (piano, flute and accordion) and the lure of free records led Seibert, a student at Columbia University to join the campus radio station, WKCR-FM, in 1969. Seibert spent the next four years as disk jockey, writer, producer and working "nearly every other job" at the station. Then Seibert set up his own jazz and blues label, Oblivion Records, out of the station's back office.
Finding the label more interesting than his history and chemistry studies, he left Columbia before graduating and devoted his energies to producing records.
However, Seibert acts such as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Cecil Taylor and Hank Jones (who was nominated for a Grammy for one Seibert-produced album) never hit a chord with the masses. Seibert served as a tour and sound manager with a jazz orchestra to support himself.
Fortunately for an impoverished Seibert, a guardian angel intervened. Dale Pon, vice president of creative services, Storer Radio group, was pleased with Seibert's work as a freelance radio engineer and persuaded him to join the company in 1978 as a promotion assistant, first in Los Angeles and then back in New York.
Two years later, in 1980, Pon recommended Seibert for the position of promotion manager with the nascent Movie Channel premium cable service, then owned by American Express and Warner Communications.
A year later, when The Movie Channel launched a novel music cable channel called MTV, Seibert found himself in the catbird seat as the only Movie Channel executive with a music background.
Once appointed to head MTV's on-air promotion effort, Seibert quickly realized the revolutionary potential of the channel and led a group that rewrote the rules of television promotion. Rather than promoting individual shows, Seibert and his team worked to establish the identity of the channel with such devices as the no-famous rotating “M” logo.
"Fred had taste,'' says his former boss, Bob Pittman, who was vice president of programming at The Movie Channel and now chairman of Time Warner’s Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park division. “He was on the cut-ting edge of where things were before we got there. He went against conventional wisdom… That was important because we had no money: originality was all we had.”
President, Hanna-Barbera, Inc., Los Angeles; born September 15, 1951, New York; attended Columbia University, New York; producer/disc jockey/writer, WKCR-FM, New York 1969-73; self-employed record producer and tour manager, 1973-78; advertising and promotion assistant, later manager, Storer Radio, Los Angeles, New York, 1978-80; promotion manager, The Movie Channel, New York, 1980; vice president, promotion and production, Movie Channel and MTV, 1981-83; co-owner, Fred/Alan, Inc., New York, 1983-92; current position since February 1992.
Then, in 1983, as vice president of creative services for Warner-Amex, now MTV Networks– Seibert abruptly quit after finding his job increasingly support oriented and less entrepreneurial. He also was disappointed that he had not been rewarded for his role in launching the rapidly expanding music channel.
Seibert and MTV creative director Alan Goodman –now Seibert’s brother-in-law– formed Fred/Alan, a programming and marketing consulting firm for radio, television and cable.
After MTV's wrath at the pair's departure subsided, Seibert and Goodman designed a promotional campaign that helped fledgling children's network Nickelodeon, owned by MTV, move from dead last among cable networks to first place in six months, again by stressing network identity over individual programs. The pair also helped create and promote the Nick at Nite sitcom block.
Finding that the success of the agency was forcing them into more mundane activities, the partners decided to dissolve the business in February 1992. A day after leaving, Turner Entertainment President Scott Sassa called and offered Seibert the presidency of Turner's recently acquired Hanna-Barbera studio.
Now, Seibert is stoking the creative engines at the company. The studio is implementing a six-year plan to promote a different group of its classic characters each year, beginning with The Flintstones this year.
Next year it will be '60s series The Adventures of Jonny Quest. Efforts include producing a live-action feature film based on the series, a two-hour animated movie for Turner Network Television and a new animated Jonny Quest show for syndication in fall 1996. The division also will begin regular production of animated feature films.
The company also has stepped up production of syndicated projects by launching weekly this season, 2 Stupid Dogs and SWAT Kats, both distributed by Turner Program Services.
The company in October began producing 48 shorts for Turner's Cartoon Network, designed to entice top cartoon producers to experiment with radical new cartoon concepts in flexible seven-minute segments. "If you attract the top talent, you will get the hits and the money will follow," Seibert says. -DT

Space Ghost Coast to Coast - Season 1 Episode 6 "Banjo" (Air Date Sep 10, 1994) - Dir. C. Martin Croker
When it comes to TV, sometimes one man's trash is another man's treasure. Such was the case with Space Ghost Coast to Coast, a show loosely cobbled together out of detritus of the airwaves to appeal to the cynical Generation X that became iconic, by all accounts, entirely by accident.

DVD Cover for SGC2C.
Before we can discuss the bizarre place Space Ghost found himself in the 90's, we have to go back 30 years. Originally created by Alex Toth (1928-2005) as an action-oriented break from the "funny animal" comedies that were frequent fare of Hanna-Barbera Productions, Space Ghost was nonetheless fairly typical of HB cartoons, utilizing an extremely limited animation style that made frequent re-use of cels and animation cycles in order to produce a Saturday morning superhero cartoon as quickly and cheaply as was possible. The plot involved the titular Space Ghost, along with his two teenage sidekicks Jan and Jace and their pet monkey Blip, as they travelled through space and battled against a number of nefarious villains, such as Zorak, Brak, Moltar, and a number of other now far less memorable characters such as "The Spider Woman" and Metallus.

Although it was considerably popular at the time of its release, spurring a wave of superhero themed cartoons and merchandise following its airing, production on the original Space Ghost cartoon lasted only a single year with a grand total of 20 episodes. This was just one example of Hanna-Barbera's prolific production schedule, as the studio aimed for a maximalist style aiming to flood the market with a "quantity over quality" mindset. Ultimately, however, this lack of craftsmanship would be their downfall. By the 1980's, Saturday morning cartoons had lost their profitability and the studio was in economic freefall. The studio's monetary woes eventually led to the acquisition of Hanna-Barbera properties by media mogul Ted Turner and his Turner Broadcasting System, the studio's assets being folded into Warner Brothers entertainment.

Shortly after this acquisition, TBS launched its burgeoning Cartoon Network channel as an outlet for its now expanded animation library. Vice President of the network, Mike Lazzo, was tasked with creating a cartoon aimed at appealing to adults, with only a single requirement - the show would have to be dirt cheap. With this in mind, Lazzo turned to the recently acquired HB properties and eventually settled upon Space Ghost. Cobbled together by Andy Merrill (the voice of Brak) and Jay Edwards out of archival footage of the original cartoon and footage of press junket interviews with Denzel Washington for Malcom X, a proof-of-concept pilot was created. Here is where things truly begin going off the rails - the first Adult Swim cartoon was coming into existence.

Space Ghost at his desk.
SGC2C first aired on April 15th, 1994 as the first original Cartoon Network production. The concept started relatively simply; the eponymous character had grown tired of the superhero game and had instead retired to host a late-night talk show, utilizing his imprisoned foes from the original show as crew. The character of Space Ghost (voiced by Gary Owens in the HB cartoon, now recast as George Lowe), once a noble and honourable bog-standard hero type, was reshaped into a "clueless, fabulously self-important" media personality who would interrogate guests with baffling non-sequiturs. Villains Zorak (a giant mantis) and Moltar (some kind of magma-man), both voiced by director C. Martin Croker, served as bandleader and director/producer respectively, both participating as part of the show against their will, under duress of being exploded by the unhinged Space Ghost's wrist lasers.
Zorak tickling the ivories.
The show's production had to be innovative considering its shoestring budget. The "set' was created out of plastic and plexiglass with the characters' reused animation projected on top. In the rare instances the producers required new animation, they utilized rotoscoping, a style where animators trace over live action footage frame by frame, to fill the gaps in the old assets, adding grain and imperfect lines to match the original cartoon's style. For the interview segments, they used a tiny motor to descend a miniature TV monitor from the ceiling to display the live action footage of the pre-recorded interviews with celebrity guests.

"Weird Al" Yankovic, the first celebrity guest to actually request to be interviewed by Space Ghost, from the episode "Banjo".
As previously mentioned, I have selected the episode "Banjo" ("KING OF THE SEA MONKEYS!") but all the episodes are more or less interchangeable, featuring animated insanity mixed with live-action interview footage. When it came to the interviews (after asking if the interviewee had enough oxygen or what superpowers they possessed), the footage would be cut and edited to create a number of awkward pauses, and seemingly reasonable responses to questions asked during the live interview would be repurposed by having Space Ghost asking a completely different question during the cartoon, resulting in the interviewee appearing almost as insane as Space Ghost himself. Space Ghost would often become angry or distracted during the interviews, sometimes becoming lost in an entirely imagined storyline in his head. Although the show was scripted, George Lowe was allowed leeway with ad-libbing dialogue and would occasionally interject with nonsense to surprise the interviewee. Most guests enjoyed the humorous incongruity of the show's format, although occasionally a guest, such as Paul Westerberg of the band The Replacements, would have enough of the insanity and would walk out.
youtube
Despite its absurdist tone and incredibly cheap production, the show was a relative success and quickly became Cartoon Network's first hit show, even garnering fans at NASA, who named rocks found on Mars after Space Ghost, Zorak, Moltar, and Brak during 1997’s Pathfinder mission. Although there were rumours that Space Ghost creator Alex Toth was displeased with the bastardization of his work, he disproved this with written letters stating he appreciated any adaptation of his characters. The show would go on to spawn a number of successors, including Cartoon Planet, a somewhat direct continuation of the series in a variety show format, The Brak Show, a series based around the childlike Brak in a pastiche of 50's family sitcoms, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, an equally absurdist and crass series based on characters debuting in the SGC2C episode "Baffler Meal", and Harvey Birdman, Attourney at Law, another Adult Swim property that reused Hanna-Barbera characters in modern context, although this program utilized far more original animation as Space Ghost had proven the formula successful and thus allowed for a higher budget. Additionally, absurdist comedian Eric Andre would claim SGC2C as a major inspiration for his bizarre, nightmarish talk show The Eric Andre Show, stating he rewatched the entirety of the series to gain insight into how to properly unsettle guests.
The show would be cancelled and revived several times, and its legacy lives on today through Adult Swim's current roster of dadaist humour based cartoons. Although it is not my favourite of the Adult Swim roster, I carry a place in my heart for SGC2C for its trailblazing absurdity and long lasting influence. Tragically, director and voice actor on the show C. Martin Croker died abruptly in 2016, and an outpouring of support from fans of his work followed.

Research of visual artist: Grayson Perry
My chosen visual artist for this project is the artist Grayson Perry. Grayson Perry was born in 1960 and is an artist, broadcaster and writer. His most characterisable art works are produced by the use of ceramics and tapestries using quite bold and bright colours to illustrate how he expresses himself. However, some of his work has also included fashion elements with embroidery and print. A well renowned website that presents the work of established and known artists Victoria Miro can back this claim up, stating that as an artist he tackles issues to do with "identity, gender, social status, sexuality as well as religion." Perry has also commented that an "emotional charge is what draws me to a subject". The ( Royal Academy of Arts, 2018, pg 71) says that Perry has also won several prizes such as the Turner Prize in 2003 as well as a CBE for the Queen's Birthday Honors List in 2013. He has also had a variety of exhibitions in the British Museum such as the "Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman" as well as exhibitions in the Andy Warhol museums. His works are displayed all around the world such as in Amsterdam and New York with his tapestries being featured in a channel 4 television series.
One of his most notable works would be his distinct and detailed pots such as The Rosetta Vase. Using (Figure 1), a large but tall vase structure is one of his famous works which is displayed in the British Museum. It is interesting to note that the vase consists of a yellow background with detailed blue figures dotted around the exterior of the vase painted with a "transparent craquele glaze". Grayson stated that this piece of work has a big connection to the notions of 'identity' because " it depicts the museum as a modern - day secular place of pilgrimage where cultures and ideas meet". A notable aspect of Perry's vase would be that there is male figure in a dominant blue colour as well as a number of different items that are meant to represent the British Museum. A source from (the British Museum) states that a variety of the images included in the vase come from a medieval Islamic treatise known as " The anatomy of the Human Body" by Mansur Ibn Ilyas. Perry definitely took some inspiration from Mansur because one of the main meanings in the treatise implies that "our body could be divided into different systems ( bones, veins, muscles, etc)". The vase itself is a 'symbol' of how Perry wanted to portray himself to viewers so therefore identity is prevalent here as we get a general idea of how he wants to 'perceive' himself as.
For further evidence, a book titled "Making Meaning- Grayson Perry( Royal Academy of Arts, 2018, pg 13) says that Perry "fuses visual and verbal, dramatising love and lust and violence, the human emotions and behaviours we all share". This has a big link towards 'identity' once again because identity is something that creates a formation between how we as individuals view ourselves and the outside world. Perhaps by having a look at the Rosetta Vase, viewers may be able to relate to some of images in the vase in relation to their own identity. For example, there are various word references scattered all over the vase such as 'beliefs', 'colonial' as well as 'post modernisms'. Not only does this link to 'identity' but has strong political and historical contexts. Using the book (Royal Academy of Arts, 2018: pg 34-35) ,another work that looks appealing to me would be the ' Comfort Blanket, 2014 which is produced in the form of a tapestry around the measurements of 290 by 800cm. In (Figure 2), the tapestry is a giant banknote of Britain which represents what we love and hate in our country. The colours consist of muted blues, greens, pinks, purples, reds with words added such as "a cuppa tea" or "rain", all identities that form our country Britain. Perry himself commented that he had a friend who left the country of Hungary and fled the soviets in 1956, with Britain being referred to as a "security blanket". This can be interpreted as something that has stability, safety with a sense of identity so the piece could even be beneficial to newcomers coming into Britain as they can familiarise themselves with Britain's identity by allowing foreigners to 'fit' in.
In terms of my own art-work, I've come to understand that Grayson's artwork is quite similar to my own styles implemented into my work. This is because he uses self- expressionism and vibrant colours and has an interesting way in drawing figures. Perry's work uses quite a bit of typography which I think communicates to us of his work as words can have a 'deeper meaning' and could reach out to people more rather than just imagery. In the future, I will definitely add this concept into my own work to make it more 'different' compared to my typical approaches such as : etching/ photoshop/ collage mediums.

Still Such A Thing Merry Go Round: American Requiem, Scoop, Augusta Savage
LAST FRIDAY, I listened to COWBOY CARTER during a gallery stroll. Developed a hardcore crush on ‘II Most Wanted’. ‘Ya Ya’ made me dance and think of Tina Turner. Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton made me laugh. I listened to ‘American Requiem’ but I didn’t hear it. I wasn’t emotionally ready for it. Until this morning:
(Oh, no) Goodbye to what has been A pretty house that we never settled in A funeral for fair-weather friends I am the one to cleanse me of my Father's sins American Requiem Them big ideas (Yeah) are buried here (Yeah) Amen
The entire song is a gut punch of knowing how much the past impacts the future. America’s grandeur and fuckery captured in 5:26 minutes. Amen.
Much of the discussion around COWBOY CARTER is centered around people questioning if Beyoncé has permission to do a country music. Or how she doesn’t have the voice for country (?!). My heartfelt perspective is let Beyoncé explore and play with music and culture. Let her find joyous collaborations. Let her be an artist. Because ‘American Requiem’ is worth her expanding the boundaries of what many gatekeepers say she must be.
SPEAKING of gatekeepers, the British monarchy and British Broadcasting Corporation are at the top of that list. Two institutions that demand people accept hierarchy and inequity as a norm and not cancerous rot. This was the mindset that I brought to the film Scoop on Netflix. The source material for the film is Sam McAlister, now former BBC booker who detailed her work life in Scoops. Scoop details the backstory of how BBC, Prince Andrew and their various staffers prepped and approached that fateful interview.
Two thoughts swirled in my head at this paean to serious journalism:
1. How telling is it that a disruptive streamer is platforming a tribute to BBC journalism and culture.
2. British monarchy and the BBC are still trying to catch up to a world where Netflix dominates.
Watching Scoop’s depiction of Andrew’s private secretary Amanda Thirsk push for the interview to reclaim his good name from his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is a reminder of how insularity fails people. The only voice of reason who can see that Andrew talking to anyone outside of his rarefied bubble would be an unmitigated disaster is an outside PR consultant. And the consultant quit when he couldn’t break through the insularity.
Anyone who has watched The Crown knows that this is nothing new. Anyone who has witnessed the ongoing tantrums, delusions, denials around Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex step away from cloistered repression of royal life knows this as well. British monarchy is convinced that survival is based on denial.
Recently, I finished the Spare audiobook and was struck by Charles failing his first meaningful test as King of the United Kingdom. Harry recounts the negotiations around him changing his role within the royal institution and his father (along with palace staff) were adamant that the options were leave or maintain the status quo. A status quo that meant accepting media racism and harassment and his family’s complicit denial of racism and harassment.
That first test for Charles’ kingship and his response was to force Harry to sacrifice himself for media predators. Where I see predators, Charles and all the palace staff see collaborators and friends. It makes sense that Amanda Thirsk would believe same. Is it possible that Thirsk was convinced that BBC journalists would prioritise class solidarity over exposing Andrew’s insensitivity and obliviousness? Did working in an environment ruled by repressive hierarchy stop Thirsk from considering the emotional fallout experienced by anyone surviving dysfunctional people and/or systems? Mmmmmmm.
FINALLY, there are too many women whose stories are overlooked and forgotten. Their contributions, their lives, their humanity overlooked because we live in a warped world. Sculptor Augusta Savage is in that category. From ArtNet:
The sculptor created the most buzzed-about work at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Then it was destroyed.
Why isn’t Augusta Savage known to the world for her work and activism of promoting Black artists? Watching Searching For Augusta Savage to know more.
Until the next merry go round.
