So apparently in my senior year of college, my dad bribed a friend of mine to help tutor me in my physics class with an $80 bottle of scotch. When asked why, he said "$80 scotch is cheaper than the $3000 needed to retake the course".

So you know how sometimes you do something as a kid or a teenager and you think it's totally normal and then the memory pops into your head as an adult and it suddenly recontextualizes the whole thing? Anyway shout out to my super nice high school math teacher, who also had the misfortune of being A. the first teacher to give me a syllabus that (crucially) included point totals and how grades were calculated B. scored tests as like 75% of the grade and C. allowed us to take tests as a group All those factors combined into two incidents that, in retrospect, he was in no way expecting to deal with but teenage me thought were totally normal (behind a read more because it got long)

The first was when I stopped doing math homework not long into the school year and he stopped me after class to (very kindly, very gently) ask me if I was okay and if everything was okay at home, because I'd stopped doing my homework but he knew I knew the material. I said "I stopped doing the homework because I crossed the threshold on the point totals on the rubric where I no longer need to turn in any homework to get an A." He paused, kinda blinked at me, and said "That only works if you get 100% on every test" I kind of stared back at him in blank incomprehension, and was like "Yes????" "What happens if you don't get 100% on a test?" "Well. I do get 100% on every test, but if I ever miss a question, you offer extra credit questions on every test" He didn't know what to say to that lol The other time was when he announced future tests would be allowed to be worked on in groups of three or four, and I walked up to him after class and said "Any group I am in will be getting 100% on the tests. That is unfair to the other groups, and unfair to the people in my group, who will not get a chance to test their skills because I am not risking my grade on their math abilities. Can I take the tests solo?" Again, teenage me thought this was a perfectly normal, logical thing to do, but looking back as an adult like oh my gosh there is no way my poor math teacher was expecting to have to deal with that. He did let me take math tests solo I tried the "calculate points then stop doing the homework" thing in my English class the next year and it did not work because that teacher had an "extra credit doesn't count if you haven't done all your assignments" policy :(

there are days in the dorms where shouta will come back after patrol bloodied and beaten without that little extra energy to take him to his and hizashi's room, so he crashes onto the sofa as soon as he walks through the doors because this smell, these sounds, they are safe.

morning will come with quiet conversations and muted tv. he gets such a bad adrenaline crash that hizashi has managed to bandage him and the kids have managed to wipe the blood and debris from his face and hair without him waking. when he wakes up he'll shower and go back to the dorms, he sees the look on the kids faces; no child should have to see the person they view as an unmovable pillar so bloodied and broken.

I debated posting this on here because this sounds SO MUCH like a Tumblr fake story from 2012 that I don't think anyone will believe me but I promise you, before we get into this, that it did happen and not a single person clapped.

One of my origin stories as the person I currently am is going to appeal my results for a English language competition in like 10th grade (of Ukrainian school, so ~15 yo) because most of the marks I was deducted was because of my handwriting (hi undiagnosed dysgraphia) and them being unable to decipher what I wrote. So I come, the examiner and I sit at a desk and go through all my "mistakes", and she goes:

"See? You said "we don't know of it". It should be "about"."

And I swear to you, I went:

"Actually, Shakespeare used "of" in "Hamlet". "And makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of"."

And then I pulled up the poetry foundation with To Be or Not To Be, showed it to her and she gave me the fucking point, too stunned to speak.

I had learned TBONTB by heart by reading it out loud to myself in the dark in my room at night multiple times in a row because I have always been sane and was never autistic actually.

It's such a loss that I wasn't on Tumblr as a teenager. I was grown in a lab to have a Tumblr blog that I will regret when I'm older.

hiii Tumblr im still here and making art except I teach it now!!!!! I'm a ceramics TA at a university :) so that's taking up a lot of my time and brain but I'm hoping once I'm settled I will be able to build a routine for art and Etsy again. I have lots of gay little pins and access to a kiln again it's exciting. do you want to see the ceramics I'm doing??? Even if they're not explicitly trans (they are implicitly because of the transformative properties of the ceramic process but like. that's the subtext)???? should I make a separate blog for the ceramics??????

Math people of Tumblr: what books should I read/YouTube should I watch to “get into” math beyond what they teach in school? I’m in Algebra 2/Precalc, if that helps :)
